Abstract:Objectives:In this study, we used liquid chromatograph-organic carbon detector-organic nitrogen detector (LC-OCD-OND) to evaluate adsorption and breakthrough characteristics of NOM fractions (biopolymers (BP), humic substances (HS), building blocks (BB) and low molecular weight organic substances (LMW-O)) according to the various characteristics of the different materials of granular activated carbons (GACs).Methods:Breakthrough characteristics, adsorption capacity and partition coefficients were evaluated by NOM fractions (BP, HS, BB, and LMW-O) using a lab-scale GAC adsorption column filled with coal-, coconut- and wood-based GAC. The GAC column test was operated with 10 minutes empty bed contact time (EBCT). The pore characteristics of each GAC were evaluated using an automated gas sorption analyzer (Autosorb iQ3, Quantachrome, USA) and the concentrations of NOM fractions in the influent and effluent were analyzed using chromatography LC-OCD-OND (Model 8, DOC-Labor, Germany).Results and Discussion:NOM adsorption capacity was evaluated for different materials of laboratory scale GAC adsorption column test. To study the adsorption behavior of individual NOM fractions according to the operation time, NOM was fractionated into BP, HS, BB and LMW-O by LC-OCD-OND, and the individual NOM fractions were quantified. Higher MW like BP was not adsorbed to GAC, in contrast, HS, BB, and LMW-O were well removed during the initial operation period, the concentrations in the effluent gradually increased as increase the operation period until reaching to the pseudo steady-state. Poor removal of BP in GAC adsorption may be a result of blocking the pores with large MW BP and hinder the access to the pores. However, in the case of HS, BB, and LMW-O, as the molecular size decreased, these organic matters easily access to the pores inside of GAC. It was confirmed through the partition coefficient that the adsorption capacity of these NOM fractions increased in proportion to the MW. In addition, in order to achieve a high NOM removal efficiency in the GAC adsorption process, not only the specific surface area, pore volume, and pore width of the GAC must be large, but also the pH zpc must be higher than the neutral pH level.Conclusions:In order to achieve a high NOM removal efficiency in the GAC adsorption process, not only the specific surface area, pore volume, and pore width of the GAC must be large, but also the pH zpc must be higher than the neutral pH level. In addition, in the NOM fractions, BP were not adsorbed to GAC, while the adsorption capacity of the remaining NOM fractions increased as the MW of the NOM fractions decreased. LMW-O was the most adsorbed, followed by BB, HS and BP. BP and HS play an important role in the membrane fouling that are introduced a lot into domestic and foreign water treatment plants. This study showed that the BP was not removed by the adsorption mechanism of the GAC process. In addition, HS was adsorbed and removed at the beginning of the operation, but the adsorption capacity of HS decreased rapidly as the operation period increased compared to other NOM fractions. Therefore, the GAC adsorption process is not expected to be an effective pre-treatment technology for reducing membrane foulants. Previous studies showed that the yields of DBPs (μmol・DBP/μmol・C) in the high MW humic and low MW non-humic fractions are similar. Therefore, it is suggested that the GAC adsorption process is more effective for DBP precursor control in water containing a larger percentage of LMW NOM.
Influence of granular activated carbon media properties on natural organic matter and disinfection by-product precursor removal from drinking water

Abstract:Operational and financial constraints challenge effective removal of natural organic matter (NOM), and specifically disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, at remote and/or small sites. Granular activated carbon (GAC) is a widely used treatment option for such locations, due to its relatively low maintenance and process operational simplicity. However, its efficacy is highly dependent on the media capacity for the organic matter, which in turn depends on the media characteristics. The influence of GAC media properties on NOM/DBP precursor removal has been studied using a range of established and emerging media using both batch adsorption tests and rapid small-scale column tests. DBP formation propensity (DBPFP) was measured with reference to trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). All GAC media showed no selectivity for specific removal of precursors of regulated DBPs; DBP formation was a simple function of residual dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels. UV254 was found to be a good surrogate measurement of DBPFP for an untreated water source having a high DOC. Due to the much-reduced concentration of DBP precursors, the correlation was significantly poorer for the coagulation/flocculation-pretreateed water source. Breakthrough curves generated from the microcolumn trials revealed DOC removal and consequent DBP reduction to correlate reasonably well with the prevalence pores in the 5-10 nm range. A 3-6 fold increase in capacity was recorded for a 0.005-0.045 cm3/g change in 5-10 nm-sized pore volume density. No corresponding correlation was evident with other media pore size ranges.
Relationships Between Adsorption Mechanisms and Pore Structure for Adsorption of Natural Organic Matter by Virgin and Reactivated Granular Activated Carbons During Water Treatment

Abstract:Temporal changes in the pore structure of granular activated carbons (GACs) were investigated for two reactivated and one virgin GAC during water treatment. One reactivated GAC had experienced five cycles of treatment and reactivation (5xReac), whereas the other had experienced twelve cycles (12xReac). For the virgin GAC that became loaded with natural organic matter (NOM), nearly all pore volume loss occurred in pores <40 angstrom, with little change in pores >40 angstrom. For the 5xReac, the greatest loss of pore volume occurred in the 100-500 angstrom pores. The 12xReac GAC experienced some loss of pore volume in the 100-500 angstrom pores. For each GAC, NOM adsorption initially caused pore volume loss in pores that were only slightly wider than the NOM itself. Subsequent to this initial stage, NOM was mostly retained in the 20-40 angstrom pores for the virgin GAC and in the 100-500 angstrom pores for the 5xReac GAC. This was followed by gradual migration of the NOM into smaller pores. A lull in NOM loading revealed distinctions in how NOM migrated in the virgin and reactivated GACs. This was characterized by more gradual changes in pore volume distribution for the reactivated GAC than for the virgin GAC. This work is original in that it offers evidence that organic sorbate may desorb to an extent that can be discerned by pore volume distributions when the total organic carbon influent levels drop below previous levels. The work also offers impact on the GAC field in that it carefully appraises relative sorption performance of a virgin, 5xReac, and 12xReac GAC during a concurrent loading interval. The results show that micropores, mesopores, and positive surface charge are important for sorbing NOM.
Comparing PFAS removal across multiple groundwaters for eight GACs and alternative adsorbent

Abstract:Eight granular activated carbons (GACs) and one alternative adsorbent (AA) were evaluated using rapid small‐scale column tests (RSSCTs) to remove low level per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from several groundwaters. Results suggested variability among waters for adsorbents to reach breakthrough. Time to reach breakthrough appeared to be inversely proportional to the background dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Bituminous GACs (particularly F400 and UC1240LD) were more effective than non‐bituminous. The elution order for PFAS was PFHxA (C6) > PFBS (C4) > PFOA (C8) > PFHxS (C6) > PFOS (C8). Multivariate regression predicted bed volumes at which F400 reached significant exhaustion (defined here as 60%) for PFOA using only two parameters (humic acid, DOC). This merits further study as these parameters could potentially be incorporated into models for predicting PFAS breakthrough. VOCs presence negatively impacted PFAS adsorption on GAC. Relative to GACs, the AA was not nearly as impacted by DOC and showed superior performance.

Abstract:Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occur widely in drinking water, and consumption of contaminated drinking water is an important human exposure route. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption can effectively remove PFAS from water. To support the design of GAC treatment systems, a rapid bench‐scale testing procedure and scale‐up approach are needed to assess the effects of GAC type, background water matrix, and empty bed contact time (EBCT) on GAC use rates. The overarching goal of this study was to predict PFAS breakthrough curves obtained at the pilot‐scale from rapid small‐scale column test (RSSCT) data. The scale‐up protocol was developed for pilot data obtained with coagulated/settled surface water (TOC = 2.3 mg/L), three GACs, and two EBCTs. Between 7 and 11 PFAS breakthrough curves were available for each pilot column. RSSCT designs were investigated that assumed intraparticle diffusivity is independent of GAC particle size (i.e., constant diffusivity [CD]) or linearly dependent on GAC particle size (i.e., proportional diffusivity [PD]). CD‐RSSCTs effectively predicted the bed volumes of water that could be treated at the pilot‐scale to reach 50% breakthrough (BV50%) of individual PFAS. In contrast, PD‐RSSCTs overpredicted BV50% obtained at the pilot‐scale by a factor of ~2–3. The shape of PFAS breakthrough curves obtained with CD‐RSSCTs deviated from those obtained at the pilot‐scale, indicating that intraparticle diffusivity was dependent on GAC particle diameter (dp). Using the pore surface diffusion model (PSDM), intraparticle diffusivity was found to be proportional to (dp)0.25 when considering data up to about 70% PFAS breakthrough. This proportionality factor can be used to design RSSCTs or scale up existing CD‐RSSCT data using the PSDM. Using pilot‐scale data obtained with groundwater and wastewater‐impacted groundwater as well as with additional GACs, the developed RSSCT scale‐up approach was validated for PFAS breakthrough percentages up to 70%. The presented methodology permits the rapid prediction of GAC use rates for PFAS removal.
Biomass Development in GAC Columns Receiving Influents with Different Levels of Nutrients

Abstract:Indigenous bacteria are essential for the performance of bio-filters for drinking water treatment. Yet it is slow and difficult to develop biofilm in a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter with low nutritional levels in the influent, especially during winter. In this study, the biofilm development in three laboratory-scale GAC columns with different types of influent was investigated in southeast China during winter. The results indicated that nitrogen was the limiting factor for biofilm development in GAC columns for this source water. The biomass density in the column with ammonia nitrogen addition was much higher than those of the other two filters, while its microbial diversity and biological activity were lower. Moreover, the ammonia-feeding column also showed the highest removal of organic contaminants during the stable operating periods, i.e. chemical oxygen demand (CODMn), assimilable organic carbon as well as biodegradable dissolved organic carbon. Therefore, nitrogen amendment favors the formation of biofilm. It could shorten the start-up time of a GAC filter and enhance the bio-stability of its effluent. This might add some new insights towards the operation of GAC filters with low nutritional levels in the influent during winter.

Abstract:Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing the number of regeneration of granular activated carbon (GAC) on the adsorption capacity of natural organic matter (NOM), and to suggest the technical process options associated the limit number of regeneration and the efficient use of regenerated GAC.Methods : The physicochemical properties of virgin and thermally regenerated GAC were analyzed. To evaluate the NOM adsorption capacity of virgin- and regenerated-GAC, five laboratory-scale columns packed with virgin- and regenerated-GAC were used for treating effluent from pilot-scale drinking water treatment facility. The NOM concentration in the influent and the effluent treated by each column was analyzed by LC-OCD (liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector) to evaluate the adsorption capacity of each NOM fractions (humic substances (HS), building blocks (BB), low molecular weight organics (LMWs)).Results and Discussion : Due to the change in the pore structure of GAC by thermal regeneration, the volume of micropores ( 2 nm) increased. The volume ratio of micropore in virgin-GAC was about 60%, but it gradually decreased as the number of regenerations increased, resulting that the volume ratio of micropore in the 5th-regenerated (5th-Re) GAC decreased to 23%. On the other hand, the volume ratio of mesopore increased in proportion to the number of regenerations from 40% of the virgin GAC to 77% of the 5th-Re-GAC. The DOC adsorption capacities of the regenerated GACs were higher than that of virgin GAC, and the DOC adsorption capacity increased as the number of regenerations increased. As a result of comparing the adsorption capacity of virgin- and regenerated-GAC by NOM fractions, the adsorption capacity of high molecular weight NOM, such as HS, increased by 1.5 to 1.7 times as the number of regenerations increased. In contrast, the adsorption capacity of low molecular weight NOM, such as BB and LMWs, decreased by 78% and 48% as the number of regeneration increased. The limit number of regeneration was evaluated based on that the adsorption capacity (qe) of each NOM fractions keep over than 70% relative to its virgin GAC. As a result, the adsorption capacity for low molecular weight NOM was greatly reduced in GAC regenerated over than 3rd time, so that the 2nd-Re-GAC was valid to keep 70% removal of whole NOM fractions. Low adsorption of low molecular weight NOM (BB and LMWs) by 3rd-Re-GAC could be complemented by using together with virgin-GAC, and low adsorption of high molecular NOMs (HS) could be compensated as well.Conclusions : Due to the change in the pore structure of GAC by thermal regeneration, the DOC adsorption capacity was higher in regenerated GAC than its virgin-GAC, and the adsorption capacity of DOC and high molecular weight NOM (HS) was enhanced as the number of regenerations increased. On the other hand, the pore volume of micropore was reduced by regenerations, and in more than 3rd times regenerations, the adsorption capacity of low molecular weight NOMs (BB and LMWs) was reduced by less than 70% compared to its virgin GAC, so that 2nd-Re-GAC was suggested for suitable GAC. When using a mixture of virgin- and 3rd-Re-GAC, low adsorption of low molecular weight NOM (BB and LMWs) by 3rd-Re-GAC could be complemented by using together with virgin-GAC, and low adsorption of high molecular NOMs (HS) could be compensated as well.
Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) from Contaminated Groundwater using Granular Activated Carbon: A Pilot-Scale Study with Breakthrough Modeling

Abstract:Granular activated carbon (GAC) is a commonly used technology for removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, most studies characterizing PFAS absorption to GAC are performed in small bench-scale tests with synthetic groundwater, which poorly approximates conditions encountered in full-scale treatment systems. Pilot-scale studies, although somewhat rare, better predict full-scale performance due to realistic operating conditions. This study presents breakthrough results from a pilot-scale GAC system operated for seven months treating a continuous source of PFAS contaminated groundwater with four activated carbons, Calgon F400 and F600, and Norit GAC400 and GCN1240. Chain length dependent breakthrough was generally observed for perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs) and perfluorosulfonates (PFSAs) and shorter chain PFASs broke through faster than longer chain PFASs. All tested GACs performed similarly for weakly adsorbing shorter chain PFASs, suggesting that GAC properties may not affect breakthrough for these PFASs. However, F400 and GAC400 performed 40-50% better than F600 and GCN1240 for strongly adsorbing long chain PFASs, which may be due to a higher volume of transport pores within F400 and GAC400. Breakthrough curves were fit by equilibrium and intraparticle diffusion models using the solid liquid partition coefficient (Kd). The equilibrium model was found to be a better fit for the data and a more practical model. Model Kd outputs from the pilot study were compared against a separate batch study. Comparisons showed that batch study Kd values were larger for longer chain compounds and smaller for shorter chain compounds.
Comparison of NOM Removal and Microbial Properties in Up-Flow/down-flow BAC Filter.

Abstract:The removal of natural organic matter (NOM) in term of CODMn by up-flow biologically activated carbon filter (UBACF) and down-flow biologically activated carbon filter (DBACF) was investigated in a pilot-scale test. The impacts of the molecular weight distribution of NOM on its degradation by the UBACF and DBACF were evaluated. The relationship between biodegradation and the microbial properties in the UBACF and DBACF were approached as well. The feed water of the UBACF and DBACF were pumped from the effluent of the rapid sand filtration (RSF) of Chengnan Drinking Water Treatment Plant (CDWTP), Huaian, Jiangsu Province, China. When the adsorption was the dominant mechanism of NOM removal at the initial stage of operation, the CODMn removal efficiency by the UBACF was lower than the DBACF. However, with the microbes gradually accumulated and biofilm formed, the removal of CODMn by the UBACF increased correspondingly to 25.3%, at the steady-state operation and was approximately 10% higher than that by the DBACF. Heterotrophy plate count (HPC) in the finished water of the UBACF was observed 30% higher than that of the DBACF. The UBACF effluent had higher concentration of detached bacteria whereas the DBACF harbored more attached biomass. The highest attached biomass concentration of the UBACF was found in the middle of the GAC bed. On the contrary, the highest attached biomass concentration of the DBACF was found on the top of the GAC bed. Furthermore, a total of 9479 reads by pyrosequencing was obtained from samples of the UBACF and DBACF effluents. The UBACF effluent had a more diverse microbial community and more even distribution of species than the DBACF effluent did. Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria were the dominant groups in the finished water of the UBACF and DBACF. The higher organic matter removal by the UBACF was attributed to the presence of its higher biologically activity.
Performance of in-service granular activated carbon for perfluoroalkyl substances removal under changing water quality conditions

Abstract:Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption is one of the best available technologies for removing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from drinking water. However, GAC processes in full-scale drinking water treatment plants frequently encounter unstable, even negative removal efficiency on PFASs due to the lack of understanding between the GAC characteristics and the PFASs polluted water quality conditions. In this study, the scenarios of raw water pre-chlorination and emergency contamination by multiple PFASs were simulated to evaluate the PFASs control performance by in-service GAC with different properties and ages. The results showed that the adsorption of a relatively longer-chain PFAS by the in-service GAC can be achieved by replacing the pre-adsorbed natural organic matter (NOM). The increased lower molecular weight NOM after pre-chlorination could compete with PFASs for adsorption sites and exacerbate the pore blockage, thus significantly weakening the PFASs removal ability of in-service GAC. When multiple PFASs entered the water by emergency contamination, the PFASs with stronger hydrophobicity could replace the PFASs with less hydrophobicity that had previously been adsorbed on GAC. GAC with a higher proportion of micropores had a lower risk of PFASs leakage facing the water quality changes.
Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Tardive Dyskinesia

Abstract:Schizophrenic patients with (N = 17) and without (N = 14) tardive dyskinesia performed several neuropsychological tests. Most patients (88%) showed complete lack of concern or anosognosia with regard to their involuntary movement. A marginally significant difference was found in recall of pictures presented in the right hemispace. It is suggested that when patients with organic brain disorder and a low Mini-Mental State score are excluded, neuropsychological tests do not differentiate between tardive dyskinesia patients and nonhyperkinetic controls. The results are discussed in relation to hemispheric asymmetries in schizophrenia.
DOM removal from surface water by activated carbon vs. a nanocomposite: an experimental and modeling approach to optimize treatment

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is commonly removed from surface water by adsorption columns packed with sand (enhanced with coagulants), high-cost activated carbons, or specifically developed adsorbents. A main challenge in removing DOM is its chemical heterogeneity, both within and among water bodies, which makes adsorbent selection, DOM removal efficiency and removal prediction complex. Our approach to address these challenges consisted of three steps: 1. developing a facile UV-based methodology to represent DOM composition using three operationally defined fractions: humic acid, fulvic acid, and a non-UV-254 nm absorbing fraction, 2) parameterizing a hydraulic-adsorption model using commercially available humic and fulvic acids, and 3) applying the parameterized model to predict DOM removal from surface waters, which we mathematically partitioned using our UV methodology. We tested DOM removal from binary solutions of HA and FA and from three surface waters ranging in UV absorption properties by three adsorbents ranging in surface properties - new and regenerated granular activated carbon (GAC and rGAC, respectively) and a clay-polymer nanocomposite (PD-MMT). Despite the complexity of surface water DOM, we found that DOM removal can be predicted by its Specific Absorption of UV at 254 nm (SUVA 254 ), and that the SUVA 254 was positively correlated with DOM removal by PD-MMT and negatively correlated with DOM removal by rGAC and GAC. One implication is that a column can potentially be tailored with an optimal adsorbent composition, i.e., PD-MMT and GAC based on water source SUVA 254 . Facile DOM characterization using UV absorption enabled to predict DOM removal by three adsorbents from three surface waters. Finally, we estimated column capacity for UV 254 adsorbing compounds under large treatment scales and found that the capacity of PD-MMT was three times larger than that of a commercial GAC.

Mastering granular activated carbon filtration to remove organic micropollutants, antibiotic resistance and metals for municipal wastewater reuse

Abstract:GAC filtration of municipal wastewater was optimized and intensified, making its implementation and operation directly after secondary clarification possible and relevant. GAC was first selected based on laboratory tests. Performances on organic micropollutants were linked to the repartition of BET surface between micropores and meso/macropores. At pilot scale, in order to limit the impact of head loss, downflow declogging sequences (DCS) were implemented and upflow filtration tested. 6 to 12 DCS per day led to a 4.7-5.5-fold increase of particles retention capacity between backwashes (cycle duration of 20-120 h), and upflow operations improved head loss evolution profile with only a slight GAC (<15 %) expansion. DCS allows backwash frequency reduction, enabling significant water savings. Both adaptations maintained high organic micropollutants removals compared to a review of 16 GAC studies at pilot or full-scale, results being in the upper range. A specific dose of 2.0-2.5 g GAC/gC was necessary to obtain an average removal of pharmaceuticals and benzotriazole of 80 % at 20 min contact time, which is comparable to PAC and low granulometry GAC. Higher doses are needed for PFAS but >80 % removals are achievable. Particles, TKN, particulate phosphorus and organic matter are well removed by GAC filtration in both configurations. Biological activity is observed through nitrogen transformation in the GAC bed. Heavy metals are greatly removed in GAC filtration, in particular Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb, probably through biosorption onto the biofilm, developed within the GAC bed. For wastewater reuse applications, GAC filtration has an added value through physicochemical quality improvement and fecal contamination indicators removal of 1 log, facilitating the implementation and optimizing the design of a post-disinfection. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes are also partially retained in GAC filtration. Finally, biological wastewater treatments combined to GAC filtration is a good solution to effectively treat organic micropollutants together with heavy metals and preparing post-disinfection for reuse.
DOM removal from Lake Kinneret by adsorption columns and biodegradation: a pilot study and modeling

Abstract:The removal throughout a year of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from Lake Kinneret water, the main reservoir of surface drinking water in Israel, was studied by adsorption pilot plant columns with media which included new (virgin) granular activated carbon (GAC), and regenerated GAC (rGAC), a clay- polymer nanocomposite (PD-MMT), and a combined media (COMB) of PD- MMT composite followed by rGAC at same volumes. Lake Kinneret water is characterized by low specific absorption of UV at 254 nm (SUVA254), high ionic strength and high bromide content. We studied DOM removal mechanisms by each adsorbent and their combination, via monitoring their emerging concentrations through the columns. The effect of DOM removal on trihalomethanes formation (THMF) is elucidated. Simulated and predicted DOM adsorption in GAC columns by developing an extended model including adsorption and biodegradation is presented. The best yield of DOM removal results (expressed as UV254 and DOC) was by the COMB and GAC columns. The COMB presents a synergistic result by the combination of two removal mechanisms, electrostatic by PD-MMT and hydrophobic by rGAC. The analysis along the columns shows that whereas the removal by GAC and rGAC was carried out through all layers, the removal by PD- MMT was preferentially by the upper and middle layers. Emerging SUVA254 values decreased for all media throughout the pilot run. The humic matter compounds comprising hydrophobic characteristics were removed better than the non-absorbing fractions at 254 nm (NABS254) with more hydrophilic characteristics. THM precursors removal by COMB as well as GAC satisfied the regulation on THM. The removal of hydrophilic matter in presence of bromide should improve the reduction of THM formation in treated water. Modeling of DOM removal at laboratory and pilot plant, which focused on removal by GAC column, could fit the data only by taking into account biodegradation of DOM. When a steady state during pilot operation is reached, biodegradation yields the main contribution to DOM removal, improving the overall capacity of GAC removal beyond the adsorption process.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) represents a range of heterogeneous hydrophobic and hydrophilic components naturally occurring in the water source and, due to the fact that they can act as precursors for the disinfection, by-products may have a considerable impact on drinking water quality. Coagulation–flocculation (C/F) is among the most applied processes for NOM removal from water sources (especially rivers). In this study, C/F efficiency for a river water supply was investigated in cold and warm conditions, by varying the coagulant dose and mixing conditions. In this study, polyhydroxy aluminum chloride PAX XL 60, and polyacrylamide FloPam AN 910 SEP were used as coagulant and flocculant, respectively. Multiple water quality indicators were determined, such as turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and residual aluminum concentration. Some unconventional parameters relevant for NOM removal were also considered, like absorbance at 254 nm (A254), at 280 nm (A280), and at 365 nm (A365), as well as the ratios A254/DOC, A254/280, and A254/A365. After coagulation–flocculation, turbidity was completely removed in all the studied conditions. The DOC content was reduced by up to 22.65% at a low temperature and by up to 31.81% at a high temperature. After the addition of polyelectrolyte in cold conditions, the efficiency in terms of A254 increased by up to 37.4%, while the specific absorbance decreased. The high molecular weight NOM increased after C/F, based on the A254/A365 ratio. Chemometric analysis was employed in order to determine the effect of the coagulant dose on the process efficiency. The optimum coagulation–flocculation conditions were corroborated by means of the principal component analysis.

Abstract:The Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) program is the effort of the Hampton Roads Sanitation District to implement indirect potable reuse to recharge the depleted Potomac Aquifer. This initiative is being demonstrated at the 1‐MGD SWIFT Research Center with a treatment train including coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation (floc/sed), ozonation, biofiltration (BAF), granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, and UV disinfection, followed by managed aquifer recharge. Bulk total organic carbon (TOC) removal occurred via multiple treatment barriers including, floc/sed (26% removal), ozone/BAF (30% removal), and adsorption by GAC. BAF acclimation was observed during the first months of plant operation which coincided with the establishment of biological nitrification and dissolved metal removal. Bromate formation during ozonation was efficiently controlled below 10 µg/L using preformed monochloramine and preoxidation with free chlorine. N‐nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was formed at an average concentration of 53 ng/L post ozonation and was removed >70% by the BAFs after several months of operation. Contaminants of emerging concern were removed by multiple treatment barriers including oxidation, biological degradation, and adsorption. The breakthrough of these contaminants as well as bulk TOC will likely determine the replacement interval of GAC. The ozone/BAC/GAC treatment process was shown to meet all defined treatment goals for managed aquifer recharge.

Abstract:To facilitate broader implementation of potable reuse, it is important to fully account for pathogen log 10 reduction values (LRVs), including unit processes that are historically uncredited or under-credited. Despite its potential for pathogen removal, coagulation coupled with flocculation (C/F) has historically been omitted or overlooked when pursuing credits for potable reuse. However, with greater implementation of carbon-based advanced treatment (CBAT), which utilizes a combination of ozone, biofiltration, and granular activated carbon treatment as an alternative to membrane treatment ( i.e. , reverse osmosis), C/F may emerge as a valuable unit process for achieving improvements in water quality, operational performance, and public health protection in potable reuse systems. This study evaluated the ability of C/F with ferric chloride to improve both bulk and microbial water quality of secondary wastewater effluent and improve downstream ozone performance. This study also evaluated potential surrogates for microbial removal during C/F treatment. C/F removed 17–54% of DOC with ferric doses ranging from 10–50 mg Fe per L, with 30 mg Fe per L sufficient for meeting TOC removal requirements from the Stage 1 D/DBPR for all evaluated secondary effluents. Coagulant doses of 30 mg Fe per L obtained LRVs ranging from 2–3 for MS2 and B. subtilis spores. MS2 and B. subtilis spore removal exhibited strong ( r ≥ 0.8) and significant ( p < 0.05) Pearson's correlation with the removal of intact cell counts and total cell counts via flow cytometry (FCM), DOC, total adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and intracellular ATP. C/F immediately preceding ozone treatment improved inactivation of B. subtilis spores, lowered applied ozone doses, and increased ozone exposure (Ct) for similar specific ozone doses as compared to secondary effluent without C/F pre-treatment. Overall, C/F with ferric chloride was determined to be a valuable treatment step for removal of dissolved organic matter, MS2 bacteriophage, B. subtilis spores, and improvement of downstream ozone treatment. Furthermore, FCM, ATP, and DOC were determined to be strong potential candidates as surrogates for microorganism removal during C/F treatment, although further testing with pathogens is still necessary to justify LRV crediting.

Abstract:Algal blooms can seriously affect the operation of water treatment processes including low-pressure (micro- and ultrafiltration) and high-pressure (nanofiltration and reverse osmosis) membranes mainly due to the accumulation of algae-derived organic matter (AOM). This study investigated the effect of granular activated carbon pretreatment on PVDF microfiltration performance for the removal of AOM. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) solution of commercial humic acid, extra- and intracellular organic matter from two species of algae, and Cyanobacteria were used for the investigation of the fouling potential of the membrane. A comparison study of different DOM removal and fouling behavior of MF after GAC adsorption as pretreatment was evaluated under variable GAC dosage and solution pH. Almost 15-20% improvement in flux and decline in irreversible fouling occurred due to the pretreatment using 1.0 g/L of GAC for an hour. The intracellular material caused higher membrane fouling than the commercial humic acid due to the hydrophilic nature of the AOM. Membrane fouling and decline in flux increased with increasing pH in the range of 5.0-8.0. The comparison results might help to provide insights into the real challenge to deal with the treatment of algal-laden water.

Abstract:An immunologic mechanism has long been suspected as a key factor in the pathogenesis of certain types of agranulocytosis as well as in syndromes characterized by a paucity of either erythrocytes or platelets. It has been only in the last few years, however, that techniques for the demonstration of blood cell sensitivity phenomena have been developed. Abstract:Microbial growth is an issue of concern that may cause hygienic and aesthetic problems during the transportation and usage of reclaimed water. Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) is an important parameter which determines the heterotrophic bacterial growth potential of water. Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 and Spirillum sp. NOX are widely used to measure AOC in drinking water. The AOC values of various reclaimed water samples determined by P17 and NOX were compared with those determined by the new strains isolated from reclaimed water in this study. It showed that the conventional test strains were not suitable for AOC measurement of reclaimed water in certain cases. In addition to P17 and NOX, Stenotrophomonas sp. ZJ2, Pseudomonas saponiphila G3 and Enterobacter sp. G6, were selected as test strains for AOC measurement of reclaimed water. Key aspects of the bioassay including inoculum cell density, incubation temperature, incubation time and the pH of samples were evaluated for the newly selected test strains. Higher inoculum density (104 CFU·mL−1) and higher incubation temperature (25°C) could reduce the time required for the tests. The AOC results of various collected samples showed the advantages of the method proposed based on those five strains in evaluating the biologic stability of reclaimed water.
