Abstract:Recent computer vision technology has made great progress in 3DTV industry. The advent of 3DTV to the home raises a number of challenges beyond the basic display of an available stereo pair. One of them is the production of 3D augmented contents. To present virtual objects over the real world, the existing method is offline processing in postproduction. It is a difficult and expensive work since flexible equipments are required and the cost of postproduction is high. In this paper, low cost approaches to product 3D augmented contents in real time are proposed. In order to make such application running in real time, we use OpenGL to render the stereo pair of 3D augmented contents. Specific rendering order is needed to avoid the flicker of compositing image. As camera moves, the image of virtual objects must be generated and combined perspectively correct with the real image. We use marker tracking technology for real time camera tracking. The experimental results show that our method is suitable for rendering the stereo pair of 3D augmented contents in real time. Running on an NVIDIA Quadro FX4800 graphic card, for each 640×360 stereo pair of 3D augmented contents, the proposed method reaches the speed of 16 ms for rendering two views.

Abstract:It is a fundamental measurement task to accurately estimate the 6-D object pose for robotic manipulations. Utilizing multiview RGB observations to estimate poses is a reasonable approach to handle scene occlusions and monocular scaling problems. Current multiview RGB object pose estimation methods mostly follow back-end process pipelines, which are sensitive to outliers and cannot run in real-time. In this article, we propose a recurrent multiview RGB object pose estimation framework that leverages 3-D volume-based feature fusion mechanism. By employing recurrent architectures, we achieve high-quality multiframe pose estimation while still running on-the-fly. Adopting volumes to fuse features in 3-D space, we implement a dense and geometrically regularized real-time fusion module for multiview RGB features. To deal with the insufficiency of current filter-based methods when fusing non-unimodal distribution observations, we utilize the nonlinear gated recurrent units (GRUs) to fuse multimodal distributions. Also, we design a detection-style self-assessment module that allows accurate estimates within local key regions instead of global perception. Experiments on LineMOD, Occlusion LineMOD, and YCB Video datasets demonstrate that our proposed method effectively and efficiently improves performance for multiview object pose estimation.

Abstract:The stereo to multi-view conversion technology plays an important role in the development and promotion of three-dimensional television, which can provide adequate supply of high-quality 3D content for autostereoscopic displays. This paper focuses on a real-time implementation of the stereo to multi-view conversion system, the major parts of which are adaptive meshing, sparse stereo correspondence, energy equation construction and virtual-view rendering. To achieve the real-time performance, we make three main contributions. First, we introduce adaptive meshing to reduce the computational complexity at the expense of slight decrease in quality. Second, we use a simple and effective method based on block matching algorithm to generate the sparse disparity map. Third, for the module of block-saliency calculation, sparse stereo correspondence and view synthesis, novel parallelization strategies and fine-grained optimization techniques based on graphic processing units are used to accelerate the executing speed. Experimental results show that the system can achieve real-time and semi-real-time performance when rendering 8 views with the image resolution of 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 on Tesla K20. The images and videos presented finally are both visually realistic and comfortable.
Scalable Multi-View Stereo Camera Array for Real-Time Image Capture and 3D Display in Real-World Applications

Abstract:3D display technology has advanced, finding applications in entertainment, healthcare, and education. However, existing multi-view content capture devices are limited by their reliance on single-camera setups or synthetic animations, constraining their flexibility and application range. This study proposes a scalable multi-view stereo camera array for real-time image capture and 3D display. The system uses 16 CMOS cameras, each with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, to synchronously capture multi-view images at 30 frames per second. Innovations include improved image calibration and geometric correction algorithms, completing each set of image calibration within 0.5 seconds with geometric correction accuracy of 0.1 pixels. The system also incorporates AI-based object tracking, capable of tracking targets moving at speeds up to 5 meters per second with 90% accuracy, and high-speed data transmission to ensure real-time image transfer with latency below 1 second. AI algorithms enhance performance in image calibration and object tracking. Machine learning techniques improve geometric correction accuracy and efficiency, while deep learning models ensure robust tracking in dynamic scenes. This system overcomes limitations of traditional single-camera setups and synthetic animations, offering improved capture efficiency and higher quality 3D images. It shows potential in multi-view facial recognition, stereo surgical training, and drone stereo monitoring. Future research will optimize image calibration and geometric correction algorithms, enhance object tracking stability, and explore additional application scenarios to improve system practicality and reliability.

Abstract:This Paper focuses on the real-time implementation of 3DTV system, of which the core algorithms are stereo matching and multi-view rendering. The former algorithm is specially designed for the generation of high-quality disparity map on the graphics processing unit (GPU) through CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) API, it is structured in a way that exposes as much data parallelism as possible and the power of shared memory and data parallel programming in GPU is exploited. The latter algorithm is specially designed in a new hardware architecture consisting of dual parallel DIBR, merging, hole filling, and synthesis, for the generation of multi-view images on the FPGA. We make the communication between PC and FPGA across network. Experiment results show that, for each 450 × 375 video with 60 disparity levels, stereo matching achieve about 16 frames per second on an NVIDIA Tesla C2050 graphics card and speed can be up to 30 frames per second after doing downsapling. Multi-view rendering can achieve 30 frames per second for processing full HD (1920 × 1080) video on Xilinx Virtex IV XC4VSX25.
An End-to-End Real-Time 3D System for Integral Photography Display

Abstract:Integrated photography display is a commonly used technology to provide users 3D videos with horizontal and vertical parallaxes. However, 3D video contents under natural scenes are very scarce and many existing methods can only provide parallaxes in one direction using binocular cameras. In this work, we set up an end-to-end real-time virtual view synthesis system for integrated photography display, in which 64 views (4 real views and 60 virtual views) can be synthesized using only 4 cameras placed in a rectangle. This paper mainly makes two contributions. Firstly, we propose a new method of polar alignment for two-dimensional camera placement (\(2\times 2\)), which aligns horizontal and vertical polar lines at the same time and preserves the effective area of the final image as large as possible after clipping. Secondly, in the process of virtual view synthesis, we introduce an accelerated strategy by combining CPU thread-level parallelism and GPU data-level parallelism to make full use of the computing resources. Experimental results show that our system can capture 4-way 480P video sequences under natural scenes, synthesize 64-way views and render the resulting 4K video combined from 64-way views on a 3D monitor in real-time.

Abstract:3D experience and free-viewpoint navigation are expected to be two essential features of next generation television. In this paper, we present a flexible 3DTV system in which multiview video streams are captured, compressed, transmitted, and finally converted to high-quality 3D video in real time. Our system consists of an camera array, 16 producer PCs, a streaming server, multiple clients, and several autostereoscopic displays. The whole system is implemented over IP network to provide multiple users with interactive 2D/3D switching, viewpoint control, and synthesis for dynamic scenes. In our approach, multiple video streams are first captured by a synchronized camera array. Then, we adopt a lengthened-B-field and region of interest- (ROI-) based coding scheme to guarantee a seamless view switching for each user as well as saving per-user transmission bandwidth. Finally, a convenient rendering algorithm is used to synthesize a visually pleasing result by introducing a new metric called Clarity Degree (CD). Experiments on both synthetic and real-world data have verified the feasibility, flexibility, and good performance of our system.

Abstract:3D video representation with depth maps is one efficient framework of 3DTV/free viewpoint television (FTV). 3D effect can be reconstructed based on human visional principle of binocular disparity. Texture image plus depth map provides an efficient solution of 3DTV application and real-time depth estimation is one barrier due to huge processing time consumption on complexity algorithm in the processing. An efficient hardware implementation of depth estimation is proposed for real time execution in this paper. The estimation system includes dual-channel video capture, image preprocessing, density pixel matching, pixel correlation and post processing. Each step of the system takes advantage of the hardware resource and adopts pipeline architecture to reduce the latency of combinational logic module at every stage and increase the throughput of the disparity extraction module. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method reduces the processing time and improves the ability of high resolution processing. The system can reach 131fps and Full HD (1920×1080) resolution, is suitable for adaptive real-time depth estimation and can be used as a subsystem embedded in the capture system of stereo vision.

Abstract:Consumer-level RGB-D cameras have been widely used for dense 3D reconstruction of scenes. Especially for textureless or non-lambertian surfaces, consumer RGB-D cameras can ensure completeness of the reconstructed models at a low cost. However, the reconstruction quality relies heavily on the accuracy of the depth sensors. Digital cameras are also used popularly for capturing high-resolution pictures to achieve high-quality dense reconstruction of the scenes, but cannot handle textureless or non-lambertian regions well due to the visual ambiguity problem. To ensure both completeness and accuracy of the reconstructed 3D models, we propose a hybrid multi-view reconstruction pipeline named Hybrid-MVS, which combines the high-resolution images taken by a digital camera and the low-resolution RGB-D frames captured by a consumer RGB-D camera for robust reconstruction of complicated scenes with challenging textureless and non-lambertian surfaces. Unlike most existing multi-sensor systems which require explicit hardware calibration and synchronization of various sensors, the calibration and synchronization problems between the digital camera and RGB-D camera are implicitly solved for compositing reliable depth prior of the digital images in our pipeline. Especially, we propose a hybrid MVS framework for robust PatchMatch stereo and Delaunay meshing, which tightly couples both visual cues given by the digital images and depth cues from the RGB-D frames to maximize the complementary advantages. The experiments with quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Hybrid-MVS framework, which can successfully achieve high-quality 3D reconstruction of complicated natural scenes with robustness to weakly textured and non-lambertian areas.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3-D) video brings people strong visual perspective experience, but also introduces large data and complexity processing problems. The depth estimation algorithm is especially complex and it is an obstacle for real-time system implementation. Meanwhile, high-resolution depth maps are necessary to provide a good image quality on autostereoscopic displays which deliver stereo content without the need for 3-D glasses. This paper presents a hardware implementation of a full high-definition (HD) depth estimation system that is capable of processing full HD resolution images with a maximum processing speed of 125 fps and a disparity search range of 240 pixels. The proposed field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based architecture implements a fusion strategy matching algorithm for efficiency design. The system performs with high efficiency and stability by using a full pipeline design, multiresolution processing, synchronizers which avoid clock domain crossing problems, efficient memory management, etc. The implementation can be included in the video systems for live 3-D television applications and can be used as an independent hardware module in low-power integrated applications. Real-Time 3D Video Synthesis from Binocular Stereo Camera

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient method to synthesize 3D video in real-time from binocular stereo camera is presented. Our stereo camera consists of two pre-calibrated cameras with the optical axis perpendicular to the camera displacement. While much work has been done on stereo processing recently, most of them are focused on high-quality depth map generation, which are usually time-consuming and unsuitable for on-line processing. In our method, we apply a dynamic programming based stereo matching algorithm to compute the dense depth map on the fly. A fast depth image based rendering algorithm is subsequently developed to render several virtual views. Compared to other similar work, our method can synthesize 3D video of good performance in real-time on commodity PCs. Besides, benefiting from the well organized system architecture, our scheme is flexible for various 3D displays. Experimental results show that our method enables effective synthesis of 3D video in real-time.

Abstract:The 3D panoramic video provides an immersive stereo visual experience by presenting 3D omnidirectional videos of real-world scenes. The key challenge is to develop an efficient representation of 3D panoramic video in order to maximize coding efficiency. In this paper, we propose an asymmetric representation based on the binocular suppression theory that in a stereo sequence, where the sharpness of left-eye and right-eye view differ, the perceived binocular quality of a stereoscopic sequence is rated close to the sharper view. According to the theory, in our method, one view is down-sampled to half size of original sequence in horizontal and vertical direction, and the other keeps the original resolution. To improve the quality of the reconstructed 3D panoramic video, we propose an anti-aliasing method based on detail blurring. Experimental results show that our representation can get significant coding gains (26.13%) over side-by-side and top-and-bottom method with full resolution.

Abstract:In order to generate a true 3D image providing viewers true depth cues, such as binocular parallax, accommodation and convergence, motion parallax, etc, a volumetric three-dimension display system has been developed based on the time sequential display of a rotational two dimension LED array which is controlled by a high speed microchips sequentially. The 3D data source is obtained from 3DS files, and mapped to the 2D LED panel by space encoding. Due to the visual persistence, observers could see full three-dimensional images without the need for special viewing glasses. The system can provide above 200,000 voxels (volume pixels) in a cylinder display space with a diameter of 305.6 mm and a height of 76 mm. The principle of the system and the display performance have been investigated by relating the display panel pixel arrangement and the reconstructed three-dimensional image. The display results of real animate three-dimensional images are presented and proved that the volumetric display system has the wide-ranging application prospect.

Abstract:Real-time 3D reconstruction is one of the current popular research directions of computer vision, and it has become the core technology in the fields of virtual reality, industrialized automatic systems, and mobile robot path planning. Currently, there are three main problems in the real-time 3D reconstruction field. Firstly, it is expensive. It requires more varied sensors, so it is less convenient. Secondly, the reconstruction speed is slow, and the 3D model cannot be established accurately in real time. Thirdly, the reconstruction error is large, which cannot meet the requirements of scenes with accuracy. For this reason, we propose a real-time 3D reconstruction method based on monocular vision in this paper. Firstly, a single RGB-D camera is used to collect visual information in real time, and the YOLACT++ network is used to identify and segment the visual information to extract part of the important visual information. Secondly, we combine the three stages of depth recovery, depth optimization, and deep fusion to propose a three-dimensional position estimation method based on deep learning for joint coding of visual information. It can reduce the depth error caused by the depth measurement process, and the accurate 3D point values of the segmented image can be obtained directly. Finally, we propose a method based on the limited outlier adjustment of the cluster center distance to optimize the three-dimensional point values obtained above. It improves the real-time reconstruction accuracy and obtains the three-dimensional model of the object in real time. Experimental results show that this method only needs a single RGB-D camera, which is not only low cost and convenient to use, but also significantly improves the speed and accuracy of 3D reconstruction.

A real-time system for 3D recovery of dynamic scene with multiple RGBD imagers

Abstract:In this paper we present a real-time 3D recovery system using multiple FPGA-based RGBD imagers. The RGBD imager developed in our lab produces color images combined with corresponding dense disparity maps encoding 3D information. Multiple RGBD imagers are externally triggered to sense the 3D world synchronously. The acquired 3D information of a dynamic scene from multiple viewpoints is then streamed to a PC cluster for further processing. Multiple RGBD imagers are fully calibrated to normalize the 3D data into a uniform world coordinate system. Compared with most of the visual hull based real-time 3D reconstruction systems, our system relies on depth maps and is much more suited for large scale dynamic scenes with multiple moving objects (e.g. people). Examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our system.
Rendering-oriented Multiview Video Coding Based on Chrominance Information Reconstruction

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3-D) video systems are expected to be a next-generation visual application. Since multiview video for 3-D video systems is composed of color and associated depth information, its huge requirement for data storage and transmission is an important problem. We propose a rendering-oriented multiview video coding (MVC) method based on chrominance information reconstruction that incorporates the rendering technique into the MVC process. The proposed method discards certain chrominance information to reduce bitrates, and performs reasonable bitrate allocation between color and depth videos. At the decoder, a chrominance reconstruction algorithm is presented to achieve accurate reconstruction by warping the neighboring views and colorizing the luminance-only pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method can save nearly 20% on bitrates against the results without discarding the chrominance information. Real-time 3D video synthesis from binocular capture system based on commodity graphic hardware

Abstract:In this paper, a real-time 3D video synthesis method suitable for implementation on commodity graphic hardware is presented. The system consists of pre-calibrated binocular stereo cameras and an NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series graphic card. Recently, most research has focused on improving the quality of depth maps, which is usually time-consuming and unsuitable for real-time reconstruction. In our method, we combine a plane-sweeping algorithm with view synthesis, and thus the new views between the captured images can be real-time generated without generating the intermediate depth map. The Programmable Fragment Shader technology is used to accelerate the process of Sum-of-Square-Difference (SSD) dissimilarity measure of the correlation pixels and the final color calculation. Experimental results show that our method can efficiently implement the real-time 3D view synthesis.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">We demonstrate how 3D head tracking and pose estimation can be effectively and efficiently achieved from noisy RGB-D sequences. Our proposal leverages on a random forest framework, designed to regress the 3D head pose at every frame in a temporal tracking manner. One peculiarity of the algorithm is that it exploits together (1) a generic training dataset of 3D head models, which is learned once offline; and, (2) an online refinement with subject-specific 3D data, which aims for the tracker to withstand slight facial deformations and to adapt its forest to the specific characteristics of an individual subject. The combination of these works allows our algorithm to be robust even under extreme poses, where the user’s face is no longer visible on the image. Finally, we also propose another solution that utilizes a multi-camera system such that the data simultaneously acquired from multiple RGB-D sensors helps the tracker to handle challenging conditions that affect a subset of the cameras. Notably, the proposed multi-camera frameworks yields a real-time performance of approximately 8 ms per frame given six cameras and one CPU core, and scales up linearly to 30 fps with 25 cameras.</p>

Abstract:3D video [IEEE Multimedia (1997) 18] is the ultimate image media recording dynamic visual events in the real world as is; it records time varying 3D object shape with high fidelity surface properties (i.e., color and texture). Its applications cover wide varieties of personal and social human activities: entertainment (e.g., 3D game and 3D TV), education (e.g., 3D animal picture books), sports (e.g., sport performance analysis), medicine (e.g., 3D surgery monitoring), culture (e.g., 3D archive of traditional dances), and so on. In this paper, we propose: (1) a PC cluster system for real-time reconstruction of dynamic 3D object action from multi-view video images, (2) a deformable 3D mesh model for reconstructing the accurate dynamic 3D object shape, and (3) an algorithm of rendering natural-looking texture on the 3D object surface from the multi-view video images. Experimental results with quantitative performance evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods in generating high fidelity 3D video from multi-view video images.
