Abstract:Filter cake is a type of engineering waste soil composed of fine-grained particles, typically characterized by its high initial saturation and poor engineering performance. In this study, autoclaved aerated concrete powder (AACP) was used as an admixture to improve the mechanical properties of filter cake. The effects of AACP content and curing time on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and volume change behavior of compacted specimens were investigated. The test results showed that the UCS of compacted AACP/filter cake mixtures initially increased with increasing AACP content, reaching a peak value at 40 % AACP content, and subsequently decreased. The sample containing 40 % AACP (cured for 28 days) exhibited a constrained modulus comparable to that of conventional embankment filling materials, but with the added advantage of a lower dry density. Expansion of the parent soil, when exposed to water, occurred through interparticle expansion. The addition of AACP resulted in a reduction in the thickness of the diffuse double layer (DDL) of clay particles, as well as a decrease in the interparticle repulsive force. This allowed soil particles to approach each other more closely and facilitated the formation of aggregated soil particles. AACP incorporation further altered the particle size distribution and soil structure, thereby contributing to the improvement in mechanical properties of the filter cake. The physicochemical and microstructural observations, such as SEM, XRD, and MIP analyses, and zeta potential tests, were in good agreement with the changes in the geotechnical properties of the samples. These experimental results provide technical references for the utilization of AACP and filter cake in embankment engineering.
Effects of two types of activated carbon on the properties of vegetation concrete and Cynodon dactylon growth

Abstract:Abstract Vegetation concrete is one of the most widely used substrates for slope ecological protection in China. However, there are still some imperfections that are disadvantageous for plant growth, such as high density, low porosity, insufficient nutrient retention ability and so on. In this paper, the effect of wood activated carbon and mineral activated carbon on the physicochemical properties of vegetation concrete is studied. The experimental results show that the activated carbon proportion in vegetation concrete is positively related to the porosity, permeability coefficient, water holding capacity, and nutrient content and retention ability, while it is negatively related to the dry density, water retention ability, cohesive force and internal friction angle. However, it should be noticed that when the proportion exceeds 2%, the average height, aboveground biomass and underground biomass of Cynodon dactylon decrease with increasing proportion of activated carbon. The effect of wood activated carbon is generally more remarkable than that of mineral activated carbon. In addition, according to the research results, the effect of activated carbon on vegetation concrete can last for at least half a year, although it does slowly deteriorate with increasing time. By comprehensive consideration of the current industry standard, previous research results and economical reasoning, the recommended type of activated carbon is wood, with a corresponding suitable proportion ranging between 1 and 2%.

Effects of freeze-thaw cycling on the engineering properties of vegetation concrete

Abstract:Vegetation concrete has been widely applied for the ecological restoration of bare steep slopes in short-term frozen and non-frozen soil regions in China. However, field experiments conducted in seasonally frozen soil regions have revealed decreases in the bulk density, nutrient content and vegetation coverage. This study aimed to clarify the evolution process and mechanism of the engineering properties of vegetation concrete under atmospheric freeze-thaw (F-T) test conditions. The physical, mechanical, and nutrient properties of vegetation concrete were investigated using six F-T cycles (0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20) and two initial soil water contents (18 and 22%). The results revealed decreases in the acoustic wave velocity and cohesive forces and an increase in the permeability coefficient of the vegetation concrete owing to F-T action. X-ray diffraction tests indicated that the decreased cohesive force was closely related to the overall decrease in the content of gelling hydration products in the vegetation concrete. Additionally, the contents of NH4+-N, PO43-P and K+ in the vegetation concrete increased, whereas that of NO3--N decreased. The loss rates of these soluble nutrients increased, indicating that the nutrient retention capacity of the vegetation concrete had decreased. Specifically, the decreased nutrient retention capacity was mainly related to the disintegration and fragmentation of larger aggregates due to F-T action. This study provides theoretical support for future research on improving the anti-freezing capability of ecological slope protection substrates in seasonally frozen soil regions.
Improvement in the freeze-thaw resistance performance of concretes by a composite phase change material

Abstract:Concrete is a widely used material for buildings, and its production reached approximately 10 billion m 3 in 2022. Half of concrete-related buildings suffer seasonal freeze-thaw action, which causes frequent engineering damage, short service life and enormous economic loss. To improve the freeze-thaw resistance and durability of concretes, we used expanded graphite (EGC 14 ) to encapsulate n-tetradecane (C 14 ) and thus prepared a composite phase change material (EGC 14 ). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests indicate that the EGC 14 is chemically stable and has excellent phase change capability. Then, five mass ratios of the EGC 14 to concrete aggregates were designed to produce phase change concretes (PCCs), named as PCC-EGC 14 s (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%). The PCC-EGC 14 s′ freeze-thaw resistance performances were systematically tested at different freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). The test data demonstrate that the EGC 14 could effectively keep the transition and capillary pores in the PCC-EGC 14 s from expanding into easily FTC-damaged macropores. Moreover, the more EGC 14 the PCC-EGC 14 s contain, the less mass loss, and the larger dynamic moduli of elasticity (MOE d ) and compressive strengths the PCC-EGC 14 s have. According to the strength requirement of C20 concretes, the PCC-EGC 14 (3%) has the optimal freeze-thaw durability. Therefore, it is suggested for actual engineering applications. Of course, the mix design principle and experimental data of the new PCC-EGC 14 s in this work are helpful to comprehend the freeze-thaw process and mechanism of concretes and could also provide a critical reference for practical production.

Abstract:Vegetation-growing Concrete (VC), as a new type of cemented soil, is usually used for plants growing on the surface of high and steep rocky slopes. With the widespread application of VC substrate, a pressing problem arises to ensure its durability under wetting and drying conditions. To explore the greatest possible impact on the mechanical properties and microstructure features of VC substrate, an experimental program including triaxial test, SEM analysis, and ultrasonic testing was implemented. The results showed that wetting and drying cycles can significantly decrease more than 40-percent of peak strength, 60-percent of residual strength, and 50-percent of cohesion for VC substrate under ultimate conditions. The fundamental cause of reduction in mechanical performance was found to be the weakening of the bond between soil particles. And it was discovered that structural damage increased as the number of wetting and drying cycles increased but at a slower rate. Based on the tested results, linear functions between the loss extent parameters of mechanical performance and the structural damage variable were established for the VC substrate. Finally, the action mechanisms of wetting and drying cycles for VC substrate were discussed, and the main influential factors were proposed.

Abstract:The mechanical strength and fertility retention capacity of vegetation concrete (VC) are insufficient when prepared using sandy soil. Biochar (BC) has been used to improve the fertility retention capacity of VC; however, it negatively affects mechanical strength and is prone to aging. In this study, a novel method using the synergistic effects of zeolite (ZL) and BC was proposed. Four different ZL contents (0%, 1%, 2%, and 4% of the planting soil weight) were investigated to determine the influence of ZL on the physical, mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of sandy VC. The results reveal that the ZL not only alleviated the negative effect of the BC but also enhanced its positive effects. In particular, by adding ZL, the porosity, permeability, and nutrient (ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen) leaching loss rates of the sandy VC decreased, whereas the cohesion, internal friction angle, matric suction, dissolved organic carbon content, and microbial biomass increased. In addition, the secondary hydration reaction between the ZL and calcium hydroxide enhanced the mechanical properties of the VC, and the adsorption of aged broken small BC particles on the ZL prolonged the fertility retention of the BC. The secondary hydration reaction of ZL occurs first, and then the remaining ZL absorbs the small BC particles. Considering the effects and cost of ZL, the recommended amount of ZL to be mixed with sandy VC is 2–4 wt%.

Abstract:In cold regions, freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) can alter the properties of soil used as a foundation filler, leading to failures in foundation engineering. The increase in biomass power plants has resulted in a significant amount of waste biomass ash, causing negative environmental impacts. To address these issues, waste wheat straw biomass ash (WSBA) is harnessed to enhance the properties of silty clays. This study examines how WSBA affects the mechanical properties and microstructure of silty clay after FTCs through FTCs tests, Triaxial tests, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) tests. The findings reveal that incorporating WSBA significantly enhances the mechanical properties and microstructure of the soil by filling internal pores and strengthening its structure. The mechanical properties of all soil samples exhibit significant deterioration after 1 FTC, with gradual stabilization ensuing after 6 FTCs. Notably, WSBA-modified samples show better resistance to freeze-thaw weathering compared to unmodified samples, particularly at a WSBA content of 10%. Furthermore, the study establishes empirical formulas linking mechanical parameters, freeze-thaw cycles, and WSBA content using binary quadratic equations. The investigation results could serve as a valuable reference for projects involving roadway subgrade backfill materials in regions with seasonal frozen soil.

Abstract:Carbonaceous mudstone aggregates are prone to disintegrate to produce alkaline hydrosols under dry and wet cycles, which affects the planting performance of vegetation concrete (VC). To improve the planting performance of carbonaceous mudstone aggregate vegetation concrete (CMAVC), while considering the soaking time and concentration are the main factors influencing the effect of pH-reducing, pH reduction and performance improvement tests, uniaxial compressive tests under different soaking time and concentration were carried out, and verified by the vegetation tests and microscopic tests. The results show that ferrous sulfate and oxalic acid reduced the pH of CMAVC effectively; 0.9 mol/L ferrous sulfate and 1.2 mol/L oxalic acid are the best ratio of pH-reducing materials to ensure that the compressive strength of CMAVC is more than 5 MPa (require by the specification), which the pH values reduced by 20.4% and 29%, respectively, and after soaking 28d, the uniaxial compressive strength reduced by 9.2% from 5.64 to 5.12 Mpa and 5.7% from 5.64 to 5.32 Mpa; Moreover, the reaction of oxalic acid with calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, and calcium alumina produces calcium oxalate stone, which fills the internal pores of CMAVC to ensure the excellent mechanical strength and planting effect.

Abstract:Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a sustainable technique to transform or improve physical and mechanical properties of soils. This paper aims to study the effect of activated carbon (AC) on the property of bio-treated China Standard sand. Six sample groups were prepared considering various dosages of cementation solutions and bacterial suspensions. In each group, samples were prepared at six different AC ratios (0%, 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% by weight of sand). Bacterial retention ability, calcium carbonate mass, unconfined compression strength (UCS), and microstructures of bio-treated samples were examined and evaluated in the presence of AC. It was found that the improved yield of calcium carbonate crystals and increased UCS were correlated to the enhanced bacterial retention ability attributed to AC. In addition, the test results showed that the amount of cementation solution played an important role in the MICP process, but volume variation of the bacterial suspension had a little effect on the bio-treated samples.

Abstract:The scope of present study is to assess the suitability of locally available waste products such as wood ash as a soil admixture to improve the engineering properties of frost-affected subgrade soil against the seasonal freezing–thawing effects. The proctor compaction analysis was carried out to evaluate the OMC and MDD of the frost-affected soil treated with wood ash and cement. Freezing–thawing effect on the hydraulic conductivity and strength was evaluated by falling head permeability method and UCS tests, respectively. The prepared samples were frozen at -18 °C for 24 h, and then, it was allowed to thaw at room temperature for 24 h to complete one cycle. Several freezing and thawing cycles were performed for each mixes. In this study, the frost-affected soil was treated with cement and wood ash with percentage varying from 2%, 4%, 6% for cement and 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% for wood ash, respectively. It was found that addition of wood ash increases the OMC and decreases the MDD, but when it was treated with cement, only OMC decreases, and MDD increases. After application of two cycles of freezing–thawing, the coefficient of permeability of soil was found to be zero or no voids with the mix proportions of S + 4% C + 20% WA. From the UCS tests, it was observed that parent soil, S + C and S + WA mixes show decrease in strength when subjected to freeze–thaw cycles compared to S + 4%C + 20%WA mix which shows higher UCS value after several freeze–thaw cycles.

Abstract:Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technique takes advantage of the metabolic process of bacteria bonding soil particles together with an environmentally-friendly and sustainable manner. In this study, powder of activated carbon-fiber felt (ACFF) scrap was utilized together with MICP to improve soil strength, and six different ACFF ratios (0%, 0.2%, 0.6%, 1%, 1.4%, and 2% by weight) were adopted. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and splitting tensile strength (TS) tests were carried out for evaluating the effect of ACFF on the dry and saturated strength of MICP-treated sand. It was found that the bacterial immobilization extent increases in the presence of ACFF, subsequently resulting in a greater yield of calcium carbonate. UCS and TS are remarkably enhanced with a small quantity of ACFF, and softening degree caused by water can also be improved by ACFF. However, only strength rather than ductility could be enhanced by ACFF. On the whole, wasted ACFF scrap could be effectively reused in the MICP technique because of the better behavior of ACFF reinforced MICP-treated sand.
Mechanical Performances and Frost Resistance of Alkali-Activated Coal Gangue Cementitious Materials

Abstract:The coal gangue after composite activation treatment is considered a potential low-carbon and green cementitious material, so the feasibility of employing composite-activated gangue to partially or entirely replace cement for building materials is systematically studied in this paper. The effects of alkali content, slag content, and water-to-binder ratio on the mechanical properties and frost resistance of alkali-activated coal gangue mortar (AACGM) were experimentally investigated. An ESEM was employed to observe the microstructure of the AACGM. Moreover, the microstructure damage to the AACGM was analyzed by a pixel-based image processing algorithm. The research was carried out in accordance with standards JGJ/T70-2009 and GB/T 50082-2009. Experimental results indicated that the mechanical properties and frost resistance of the AACGM were superior to those of ordinary Portland cement mortar (OPCM). Compared with the OPC group, the compressive and flexural strength of the W0.50 group increased by 16.01% and 14.19%. Moreover, the loss rate of mass, flexural strength, compressive strength, and microstructure damage of the AACGM were less than those of the OPCM. Between freeze–thaw cycles 25 and 100, the cracks and pores of specimens gradually grew, and the maximum crack width increased by 277.78%. In addition, the slag was beneficial in improving the flexural strength, compressive strength, and frost resistance of the AACGM. Finally, the freeze–thaw damage mechanism of the CGBG mortar was systematically analyzed.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) is widely utilized as a soil amendment; however, for widely distributed seasonally frozen soils, the effect of BC on soil and the optimal utilization of BC during the freeze‒thaw process are still unclear. In this study, the effects of freeze‒thaw aged biochar (FT-BC) and BC on soil properties and wheat cultivation were systematically investigated, and the underlying interaction mechanism between BC and soil was explored. The results show that FT-BC dramatically reduces the adverse effects of freeze‒thaw cycles on soil, enhances wheat growth, and increases dry matter yield by 17.5 %, which is mainly attributed to the ability of FT-BC to maintain soil structure, reduce water loss rates to below 0.20 g/h, and decrease nitrogen leaching by more than 20 % during freeze‒thaw cycles. Additionally, fresh BC had a greater effect on the fixation of cadmium than FT-BC in the soil, reducing its accumulation in wheat by 22.5 %. Multiple characterizations revealed that the freeze‒thaw process increased the porosity and specific surface area of FT-BC, providing more sites for water and nitrogen adsorption, whereas the dissolved organic matter released from fresh BC had a better ability to trap cadmium. These findings provide insights into the interactions between BC and soil components during the freeze‒thaw process and suggest the optimized utilization of fresh BC and FT-BC for different soil repair purposes.
Evaluating the Influence of Carbon Fiber on the Mechanical Characteristics and Electrical Conductivity of Roller-Compacted Concrete Containing Waste Ceramic Aggregates Exposed to Freeze-Thaw Cycling

Abstract:Traditional methods of removing snow and ice from pavements using chemicals are combined with mechanical removal that involves a lot of manpower, advanced machinery, chemicals that are harmful to the environment, and damage to pavements. Furthermore, annually, large quantities of ceramic materials become waste due to their fragile nature during processing, transport, and installation, and their accumulation in the nature has brought about environmental and health-related concerns. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the effect of using waste ceramic as a replacement for fine aggregate in roller compacted concrete (RCC) and the application of carbon fiber to improve the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of RCC. To achieve this goal, several tests such as compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, electrical resistance, chloride ion penetration, specific gravity, and skid resistance tests were carried out on the fabricated samples before and after freeze-thaw cycling exposure. The experimental results illustrated that replacing waste ceramics with fine-grained aggregate increased the compressive strength and tensile strength of RCC. Furthermore, carbon fiber increased tensile strength but had no noticeable influence on compressive strength. Freeze-thaw conditioning led to a reduction in the compressive and tensile strength regardless of the aggregate type and carbon fiber utilization. In the samples containing waste ceramic aggregate, the electrical conductivity was reduced, and by adding carbon fiber, its electrical conductivity was increased. Exposure to freeze-thaw cycling resulted in an increase in electrical resistance and the passing charge. Waste ceramic incorporation created a similar mixture in terms of skid resistance, while in contrast, the carbon fiber slightly reduced the skid resistance. In addition, freeze-thaw conditioning resulted in an increase in the skid resistance. Besides, in this study, kernelized support vector regression (KSVR) and radial bias function (RBF) neural network models were proposed to estimate the indirect tensile strength (ITS) and compressive strength (CS) values. The results showed that both models have high performance in estimating these values, but RBF was a more efficient model.

Abstract:Recycled aggregate concrete, as a construction material, can be applied to structural components (beams, slabs, columns, and foundations), auxiliary components, and temporary facilities with strength grades ranging from C30 to C50. Today, the world is facing an increasing pressure of greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing carbon dioxide for the curing of recycled aggregates contributes to achieving carbon reduction goals. Freeze damage can cause deterioration of mechanical properties and surface spalling of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). This study investigated the influence of three different CO 2 curing methods, standard CO 2 curing (CC group), CO 2 curing with pre-saturated Ca(OH) 2 immersion (HH group), and whole specimen CO 2 curing (CRR group), on the properties of RAC subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. The results revealed that all the three CO 2 curing methods improved the peak stress and elastic modulus of RAC by 12.3–13.7 % and 19.2–31.5 %, respectively. The HH group suffered the least mass loss rate and experienced the most improvement in the relative dynamic modulus. The improvement in the RAC impermeability was in the descending order of HH group > CC group > CRR group. It should be pointed out that RAC with a lower initial water-cement (w/c) ratio exhibited better permeability resistance. Compared with the reference group, the CC, HH, and CRR groups showed a respective 49.0–58.7 %, 55.8–72.6 %, and 45.5–46.8 % reduction in the capillary water absorption coefficients after being subjected to different CO 2 curing methods. Among the three groups, the HH group with a w/c ratio of 0.35 and 0.55 showed better resistance to chloride ion penetration (which was further reduced by 9.4–31.6 % and 19.2–41.1 %, respectively).

Strength and microscopic pore structure characterization of cement-fly ash stabilized organic soil under freeze-thaw cycles

Abstract:In seasonal frost areas, an organic soil stratum is often encountered during engineering construction due to the widespread existence of organic soils. The soil stratum will experience frost heave in winter and thaw settlement in summer, resulting in a significant variation in its engineering behaviour, especially for organic soil stratum. In this study, with the help of cement, fly ash, and fulvic acid, cement-fly ash stabilized organic soil (CFOS) specimens were prepared and the unconfined compressive (UC) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests were carried out on CFOS specimens. The effects of fly ash content, number of freeze-thaw cycles (FT-N), and curing period on the strength, resilient modulus, and porosity were investigated. Test results revealed that the fly ash content increased from 0% to the optimum content of 5%, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and resilient modulus of CFOS with FT-12 increased by 50.30% and 118.92%, respectively. The pore size distribution (PSD) curve and fractal dimension ( D n ) of specimens were obtained from the MIP test. The proportion of macropores was the main factor affecting the UCS of CFOS. With the increasing FT-N, the macropore proportion of CFOS with 5% fly ash content increased by 333.33%, and the UCS decreased by 28.25%. Based on a freeze-thaw damage model, the damage parameters of the CFOS specimens were extracted with the D n as an independent variable. The microscopic pore characteristics and the relationship between the strength, D n and damage parameter were analyzed. The microscopic pore structure of specimens with different fly ash contents experienced a change subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. The lower the strength, the lower the D n of CFOS. The damage parameters quantitatively reflected the damage degree of specimens after freeze-thaw cycles on the micro scale. The damage parameter of CFOS with 5% fly ash content increased by 341.57% with the increase of FT-N. The introduction of fly ash was able to reduce freeze-thaw damage to the specimens. The damage parameter and CFOS strength exhibited a significant correlation. The relationships of the strength and microscopic pore structure of CFOS subjected to freeze-thaw cycles were conducive to a better understanding of the freeze-thaw damage mechanism of CFOS on the micro scale. These findings are beneficial for engineering construction design in seasonal frost areas.

Abstract:Air-entrained recycled concrete aggregate (AE-RCA), with strong frost resistance, cannot be effectively modified using the freeze-thaw modification that combines thermo-drying and freeze-thaw cycles. To address this issue, the modification technique was improved by introducing the pre-treatment of vacuum saturation. Subsequently, experimental investigations were conducted to validate the modified effect of the improved freeze-thaw modification. The results demonstrated that the improved method shows higher efficiency in treating AE-RCA, particularly for the aggregates with a low water-to-cement ratio. A theoretical analysis was conducted on various influential factors within the new modification method, utilizing the thick-walled spherical model and the theory of pore water freezing. The primary factors under consideration included the water-to-cement ratio, air content, natural aggregate radius, thickness of attached mortar, thermo-drying temperature, minimum temperature, and saturation method. The distribution of tangential strain in the attached mortar and the displacement at the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) were chosen as comparative indices. Finally, the integration of theoretical analysis and experimental results led to the development of a predictive model capable of estimating the required number of freeze-thaw modifications under various conditions quickly.

Effect of different activation techniques on the engineering properties of cement-free binder containing volcanic ash and calcium carbide residue

Abstract:This study developed a cement-free binder using volcanic ash (VA) and calcium carbide residue (CCR) as an alternative binder to cement. First, the optimal proportions of VA and CCR were determined to achieve superior flow, compressive strength, and bulk electrical resistivity. After that, various activation techniques, namely physical (sieving the CCR on sieve No. 325), chemical (adding 1 % NaOH by binder mass to the paste), and thermal (curing the paste in an oven at 65°C for 24 h), were used either exclusively or synergically to enhance the performance. The results show that the optimum VA:CCR was 95:5. The flow increased by chemical activation but decreased with physical activation. Using subsequent physical and chemical activation led to a slight increase in flow. Binders subjected to physical activation followed by thermal activation had the highest compressive strength of 31.2 MPa at 28 days of curing. In contrast, subsequent combined chemical and thermal activation produced superior bulk resistivity of 193 Ω.m at the same age compared to other activation techniques. Nevertheless, all activation techniques improved the strength and bulk resistivity. The calorimetric analysis confirmed that the emitted heat increased with different activation methods compared to the mix without activation, which agreed with compressive strength results. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the reaction products were calcium-silicate-hydrate and calcium-aluminate-silicate-hydrate gels. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images confirmed that different activation techniques resulted in a denser microstructure than the inactivated VA-CCR paste. This cement-free binder contributes to the ongoing efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of cement-based materials by finding sustainable alternative binders to cement.

Abstract:In the preparation of ready-mixed concrete, it is inevitable to produce waste fresh concrete (WFC). An efficient, low-cost and environmentally friendly recycling scheme is the key to WFC recycling. In this work, we directly added some unhardened WFC to fresh concrete to prepare recycled fresh concrete (RFC); on this basis, fly ash (FA) and nano-silica (NS) were added as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to obtain modified recycled fresh concrete (RFC-SF). Then, the mechanical properties, slump, freeze–thaw resistance, phase structure of the hydration products and hydration process in RFC were studied. The results show that the addition of FA and NS significantly improved the comprehensive performance of RFC. Compared with RFC, the compressive strength of RFC-SF with 15% FA and 3% NS increased by 15.2% and 50.3% at 7 d and 90 d, respectively, and the splitting tensile strength increased by 20.5% and 76.4%, respectively. The slump remained above 155 mm, and the mass loss rate decreased by 42.6% after freeze–thaw cycles. XRD and FTIR analysis showed that the addition of FA and NS accelerated the hydration reaction process of RFC-SF, reduced the content of calcium hydroxide (CH) and refined the grain size of CH. RFC-SF had a denser microstructure and a lower calcium-silicon ratio in SEM and EDS tests.
