Abstract:The ongoing Toilet Revolution in China offers an opportunity to improve sanitation in rural areas by introducing new approaches, such as urine source separation, that can contribute to achieving SDG6. However, few studies have systematically assessed the social acceptability of managing human excreta collected in new sanitation systems. Therefore, in this study we performed face-to-face interviews with 414 local residents from 13 villages across three provinces in western China, to analyze the current situation and attitudes to possible changes in the rural sanitation service chain. We found that the sanitation chain was predominantly pit latrine-based, with 86.2% of households surveyed collecting their excreta in a simple pit, 82% manually emptying their pits, and 80.2% reusing excreta in agriculture without adequate pre-treatment. A majority (72%) of the households had a generally positive attitude to production of human excreta-derived fertilizer, but only 24% agreed that urine and feces should be collected separately. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that three factors (level of education, number of permanent household residents, perceived social acceptability) significantly influenced respondents' attitudes to reuse of excreta, although only perceived social acceptability had a high strength of association. Overall, our survey revealed that rural households often misuse toilet systems, fail to comply with government-specified sanitation guidelines, have low awareness of alternative solutions, and are over-reliant on the government to fix problems in the service chain. Thus while new sanitation technologies should be developed and implemented, information campaigns that encourage rural households to manage their excreta safely are also important.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the different types of domestic waste disposal in rural China and the major factors that affect rural household waste disposal behavior. Design/methodology/approach - Stratified and randomly sampled household data are used to describe the disposal of domestic waste in rural China, including domestic garbage and organic waste (human excreta, livestock waste, and kitchen waste); econometric models are estimated to quantify the major determinants of household domestic garbage and human excreta disposal. Findings - While about 30 percent of the domestic garbage in 2008 was discharged to appropriately designated places, more than 40 percent of the garbage was discharged casually. Organic waste at the time of data gathering was still largely used in agricultural production, although a falling trend has been evidenced in recent years. Based on econometric analysis, it becomes clear that income growth, rising population density, and transportation improvements have significantly improved domestic garbage disposal, but negatively affected the recycling of human excreta. The provision of an adequate garbage collection service has the most positive effects on garbage management. Originality/value - The analyses are based on primary survey data. The results will have significant policy implications on the management of rural domestic waste to maintain better rural environment.
What Factors Affect Farmers' Levels of Domestic Waste Sorting Behavior? A Case Study from Shaanxi Province, China

Abstract:Waste sorting is a key element for solving the current predicament of rural waste management. In the pilot areas of China, farmers' domestic waste sorting behavior (DWSB) varies significantly, whereas there are few studies exploring the mechanism of its formation. To fill this research gap, this study constructs a research model of the internal logic of farmers' waste sorting levels (i.e., no sorting; sorting recyclable waste; sorting recyclable and kitchen waste; and sorting recyclable, kitchen, harmful, and other waste) by considering circumstantial constraints (social norms in external factors) and psychological behavioral antecedents (personal norms and group identity in internal factors). Based on pilot survey data from farmers in Shaanxi Province, China, the results of the ordered logit model indicate that social norms and personal norms were the most significant predictors of the level of DWSB, while group identity was found to have no significant influence. Furthermore, the results of the grouping regression analysis showed that personal norms had a positive moderating effect on the relationship between social norms and farmers' DWSB. Therefore, a more positive social atmosphere, better education, and personal environmental moral responsibility for domestic waste sorting should be established to enhance their levels of waste sorting behavior.

Abstract:The growing interest of policy-makers, environmental stakeholders, and academics in rural domestic waste treatment has made it a recent focus of research in the field of rural human settlements. Many studies have been conducted to understand the related factors; however, their results are inconsistent. Therefore, different from previous studies, the study systematically analyzed and summarized empirical studies on rural domestic waste treatment and explored the key factors that fostered and impeded it. It also examined the reasons for differences in research level and trends in key factors over time. A random-effects meta-analysis of 24 studies revealed that education, political status, perceived value, behavioral attitude, subjective norm, garbage collection facilities and services, environmental knowledge and propaganda, and government policy and regulation had a significant positive correlation with rural domestic waste treatment; perceived value had the highest impact, followed by behavioral attitude. All of the variables had significant heterogeneity. Some of the heterogeneity can be explained by differences in research methods, sample size, and variable measurement methods. An increasing trend was observed in the effects of perceived value, behavioral attitude, and subjective norm. Finally, based on these results, the study provided suggestions on policy and academic aspects.

Abstract:Based on a field survey of 1,118 rural households conducted in 2010 in 6 provinces,this paper empirically analyzes rural solid waste disposal and its determinants.First,we statistically describe the current status of rural solid waste disposal and its components.Second,we identify the determinants of solid waste disposal with factor analysis method.Finally,we examine the determinants of domestic solid waste disposal using econometric models.Our results show that daily solid waste disposal in the sampled rural areas is 1.07 kg per capita,but it varies significantly across regions.Zhejiang,the most developed province in our sample,generates the highest level of solid wastes at 1.19 kg per capita,and Yunnan is at the lowest with 0.87 kg of disposal per capita per day.Kitchen waste,accounting for 27.6%,is the largest component in the total discharge.The identified determinants of waste disposal include income,relevant policy factors and a number of social and economic factors as well.
Characteristics and management modes of domestic waste in rural areas of developing countries: a case study of China

Abstract:A huge accumulation of domestic waste has caused serious environmental contamination in rural areas of developing countries (RADIC). The characteristics and management of domestic waste are carefully discussed, based on field surveys and a literature review. The results indicate that the generation in most of RADIC is less than the median of 0.521 kg day-1 per capita in China, and much smaller than in rural areas of developed countries (RADEC). Organic waste and inert waste with an accumulative mass percentage of 72.31% are dominant components of domestic waste in the rural areas of China. There are trends of increasing amounts of kitchen waste, paper/cardboard, and plastic/rubber and a decreasing trend of ash waste. The RADIC composition of domestic waste had a high content of organic waste and a low content of recyclable waste compared to the RADEC. Domestic waste has good compressibility and a light bulk density ranging from 40 to 650 kg m-3. The moisture, ash, combustible, and calorific values of domestic waste were 53.31%, 18.03%, 28.67%, and 5368 kJ kg-1, respectively. The domestic waste has an abundance of nutrients including organic matter (39.05%), nitrogen (1.02%), phosphorus (0.50%), and potassium (1.42%). In RADIC, domestic waste can be used as an agricultural manure only after it has been collected and sorted for the potential risk of heavy metal accumulation. Based on these characteristics of domestic waste and the different situations of rural areas, four waste management modes including centralized treatment, decentralized treatment, group treatment, and mobile treatment are designed and discussed.

Abstract:With the continuous development of rural social economy in China, the quality of life and agricultural production level of farmers have significantly improved. The lifestyle of farmers has changed significantly, and some traditional agricultural production links have been broken, resulting in a sharp increase in the quantity and variety of agricultural waste. The resource utilization of agricultural waste can not only improve the efficiency of rural resource utilization, but also reduce agricultural waste pollution and protect the rural environment. This article takes the agricultural waste resource utilization in Wuhe County, Anhui Province as an example for investigation and analysis. The main conclusions are as follows: the significance of agricultural waste resource utilization is significant, and resource utilization treatment is very necessary; Agricultural waste has a wide range of sources, and strengthening classification and integration is particularly important; Group cognition needs to be improved, and guiding education is imperative; The subjective willingness of villagers is good, and policy implementation is expected to be popularized; The four types of factors have a significant impact, and targeted measures are taken. Based on the results of the practical investigation, this article mainly proposes the following feasible path suggestions for agricultural waste resource utilization: publicity and education, improving the awareness of villagers; Government guidance and increased regulatory support; Facing market pain points and enhancing industrial vitality; Strengthen classification integration and promote technological innovation; Strengthen scientific layout and promote benefit sharing.
Influencing factors of farmers' participation in domestic waste classification: An empirical analysis based on the semi-nonparametric estimation extended model

Abstract:Farmers are the main participants of domestic waste classification, and their willingness and behavior to participate are directly related to the success or failure of domestic waste classification and the construction of "beautiful countryside." Based on the analysis of the influence mechanism of exemplary behavior and social supervision on farmers' participation willingness and behavior, an empirical analysis of 988 survey data of farmers in Henan Province is carried out using a semi-non-parametric estimation extended model. The results show that: (1) 85.63% of farmers are willing to participate in the classification of domestic waste, but their willingness and behavior are not consistent. (2) The exemplary behavior of relatives can only increase the willingness of farmers. The exemplary behavior of neighbors and village cadres not only has a positive impact on the behavior, but also facilitates the transformation of willingness to behavior. (3) The supervision of village cadres can increase the willingness of farmers. Although the supervision of villagers and cleaners will reduce the willingness of farmers, it has a significant positive impact on the behavior of farmers. Based on the research conclusions, suggestions are made to play the leading role of village cadres, attach importance to the supervision of villagers and cleaners, broaden publicity channels and strengthen publicity to special groups, improve supporting policies and classification equipment, in order to promote the classification of rural domestic waste.
Rural Solid Waste Management in China: Status, Problems and Challenges

Abstract:This paper seeks to describe the overall state of Rural Solid Waste Management (RSWM) in China in three main areas: waste collection services, waste transportation services and waste disposal services. Given China’s urbanization, industrialization, and the subsequent improvement of household living standards, the amount of solid waste generated in rural China has increased rapidly. Based on primary data collected in 2016 from 100 villages across five provinces in China, we find that the proportion of villages with waste collection, waste transportation, and waste disposal services in 2015 is 80%, 55% and 22%, respectively. The differences in shares of villages with these services across provinces are statistically significant. Using descriptive and econometric analyses, the authors show that richer villages are more likely to provide rural solid waste (RSW) collection and transportation services. Villages with new (newly elected or appointed) village leaders are more likely to supply RSW disposal services. While the majority of villages report that they offer waste collection services (installing waste collection facilities and employing waste collection workers), the vast majority of villages do not transport their waste to treatment plants. Even fewer villages report using centralized disposal methods to dispose of waste, as required by law or regulation. This study represents the first effort to describe the state and determinants of waste management services in rural China in the wake of increased investment in and new policies regarding RSWM released in 2015. Additionally, we provide evidence-based suggestions that might be useful for policy makers interested in improving RSWM in China. These suggestions include increasing investments in waste collection facilities and worker services; encouraging local residents to classify and recycle waste; designing optimal waste transportation networks and routes; and improving on-site waste disposal technology.

Abstract:Agricultural chemical use has caused a public concern over environmental issue while decisions about applying chemicals are made by individual farmers. The critical decision-making role of farmers relative to agricultural chemical use creates a need for accurate information on their perceptions of various chemical-related hazards and the factors that may influence such judgments. Based on data collected from 177 land operators at Xinxiang County in Henan Province of China, an empirical analysis is conducted to examine the relationship between farmers' character and the behavior of fertilizer application. Study findings reveal that: the characteristics of household head and household, and the nature of farming management positively affect the amount of fertilizers applied; information on fertilizers and the knowledge about environmental impact of fertilizer application have negative impacts by contrast. To formulate effective pollution control policies at the farm level, it is imperative for policy-makers to convey information to producers by demonstration projects, technical assistance, and education programs. Under a changed political environment, some combination of education and economic incentives could be lower cost and more effective tools for achieving desired environmental conservative goals.

Abstract:Garbage classification and reduction is imperative in many developing countries, where the imbalance between the rapid growth of solid waste and insufficient disposal capacity can be challenging. In order to evaluate whether a novel '2 + T' source classification method (biodegradable waste, other waste, and toxic waste) and three types of source classification and resourcing treatment patterns implemented in the rural areas of Hangzhou can be widely applied, field investigations, questionnaire interviews, and factor analysis were carried out comprehensively. By means of '2 + T' source classification method, biodegradable waste, accounting for the largest proportion of rural domestic waste, can be effectively separated for the subsequent reduction and resource treatment. Classified deposition in the doorway and door-to-door collection of biodegradable and other wastes provided the best solution for the accuracy of source classification and public participation. Based on the analysis, appropriate classification methods and patterns, sustainable publicity and supervision of source classification behavior as well as sufficient financial support will be key factors for rural domestic waste classification and resourcing management. These methods have a great potential for promoting solid waste classification in the rural areas of China and in other developing countries.

Abstract:A consequence of the improvement in China's agricultural production capacity has been increased production of pesticide packaging waste, which is a major obstacle to the sustainable development of rural areas. Although the Chinese government has made great efforts to control pollution by waste pesticide packaging, a unified recycling system has not yet been established. Therefore, determining whether farmers are willing to participate in recycling of pesticide packaging is of great relevance. This study conducted a random questionnaire survey in which 459 responses were obtained in rural areas in Liaoning, Henan, Guizhou, Anhui, Gansu, and Hunan provinces. The disorderly classification logistic model was used to analyze the individual characteristics of farmers, pesticide container sizes, perception of risk, conditions of local facilities, and awareness. The result showed that the individual characteristics of farmers and awareness had no influence of their willingness to participate in recycling, whereas container size, perception of risk, and condition of local facilities did have an influence. Container specifications have the strongest correlation with farmers' willingness to recycle, and attempts can be made to promote pesticide packaging of about 500 ml; raising farmers' awareness of environmental safety and possible health hazards, all of which can increase farmers' participation in the work. Using these results, this study proposed suggestions for pesticide container waste disposal. Attempts can be made to establish a suitable recycling model and management mechanism through the establishment of additional recycling points. Refine pesticide packaging waste recycling, collection and storage, disposal and other measures to purify the environment of origin, to achieve green agricultural development, and promote the construction of ecological civilization.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the discharge volume of domestic solid waste in rural China and to explore the potential impact of various factors that contribute to it. Design/methodology/approach – The data used in this study come from a large-scale field survey conducted in six Chinese provinces. Based on the collected survey data, econometric model on the determinants of domestic solid waste discharge was constructed and used for analysis. Findings – Results from the study show that the per capita daily discharge of rural domestic solid waste was close to 1 kg in 2010, slightly less than the urban level of 1.2 kg. Results from descriptive statistical analysis and econometric estimation indicate that by implementing selected policy measures, the discharge of solid waste can be significantly reduced. In addition, the discharge of domestic solid waste is also closely related with local socio-economic development. In particular, the results show an obvious inverted U-shaped curve between discharge volume and income. The increase of off-farm labor opportunities would also reduce solid waste discharge in rural China. Originality/value – This paper focuses on domestic solid waste discharge and its determinants in rural China, a research area very important but seldom reported.

Abstract:In the background of growing rural domestic waste pollution, encouraging the source classification of rural domestic waste is a critical way to address the inadequacies of rural environmental problems. Using the micro-survey data of rural residents in Shaanxi province, China, this paper explores the decision-making behavior (classification willingness and degree of classification) of rural residents' domestic waste through a double-hurdle model (DHM). The results show that among the 1374 rural residents, 1274 samples are willing to be sorted and put into place. Of these, 45.21% of the rural residents are eager to classify household waste into four categories, namely recycling or saleable, food waste or perishable, toxic and harmful, and others. Besides, household income has a significantly negative impact on the domestic waste classification willingness of rural residents while the number of education years positively impacts the degree of rural domestic waste classification. It is an indication that the sense of environmental responsibility significantly and positively influences the decision-making behaviors of rural residents, not only promoting their willingness to classification but also increasing their degree of classification; the psychological perception of rural residents about the pollution of domestic waste significantly increases their willingness and degree of classification. Policy implications are further discussed.

Abstract:Using the theory of motivation, and the theory of planned behavior, this study establishes the “motivation-cognition-behavior” model of green utilization of agricultural waste from the perspective of farmers. In the motivational dimension, eight motivational factors were determined in three sub-dimensions of extrinsic motivation. In the cognitive dimension, three sub-dimensions of subjective norms, behavioral attitude, and perceived behavioral control are also determined. In the behavioral dimension, two sub-dimensions of utilization intention and utilization behavior are specified. Methodologically, a questionnaire on the green utilization of agricultural waste of 704 peasant households in five provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Shaanxi, Gansu, and Sichuan was administered. With the help of the structural equation model, the influence path and the internal mechanism was then analyzed. It is shown that: (1) in relation to the “motivational dimension → cognitive dimension,” extrinsic motivation significantly promotes the cultivation of farmers’ subjective norms, in which positive broken windows theory has a positive effect. In contrast, negative broken windows theory has a negative one. In intrinsic motivation, the behavior attitude of farmers is negative. In the response analysis, farmers can realize that their ability, self-efficacy, response efficacy, and response cost all have a positive impact on farmers’ perceived behavioral control. (2) In relation of the “cognitive dimension → behavioral dimension,” behavioral attitude slightly hinders utilization intention, while subjective norms and perceived behavioral control all contribute to a stronger utilization intention; the utilization intention maintains a positive correlation with the utilization behavior.

Determinants of household waste separation in rural China

Abstract:It is crucial for rural residents to consciously separate their domestic waste to improve their living environment and build beautiful villages. Exploring the decisive factors of household waste separation in rural China can offer more precise guidance for waste segregation, thereby contributing to the establishment of a more efficient and sustainable waste management system. Using the 2022 China rural revitalization comprehensive survey data (CRRS), this paper combined the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm with the Logit model to identify the determinants of waste separation in rural China from multiple aspects. It was found that families with better internet conditions, more equipment, and online training are more willing to participate in waste separation. Families who are more satisfied with the various tasks of the village committee are more willing to separate waste. Additionally, greater concern about food safety, and active learning of health knowledge are more inclined to engage in waste separation. Thus, this paper proposes improving internet conditions, enhancing satisfaction with village cadre work and promoting health awareness education.

Abstract:Household waste classification and treatment are important for environmental protection and sustainable development. The Logit model is used to analyze differences in farmers' willingness and behavior regarding waste classification based on data from the China Land Economic Survey. Key findings include the following: (1) There is an evident discrepancy between waste classification willingness and action among rural residents. Despite nearly 90% of the sampled farmers expressing a willingness, nearly 40% do not practice waste classification. (2) Internet usage significantly reduces the discrepancy between farmers' willingness and actual waste classification practices. This observation is valid even after robustness checks and endogeneity discussions. (3) There is a partial mediating effect between ecological awareness and knowledge perception on farmers' willingness and behavior differences, which accounts for 12.9% and 52.6%, respectively, of the total impact. Notably, institutional limitations amplify the negative influence of Internet use on this discrepancy. (4) According to heterogeneity analysis, Internet use has a greater negative impact on farmers' willingness and behavior in waste classification in suburban villages and villages with environmental governance projects. This study proposes policy suggestions such as strengthening the construction of digital infrastructure in rural areas, enhancing the promotion and training of waste classification among farmers, and improving incentives and restraint mechanisms for rural household waste classification.

Abstract:The waste management as the interface between human daily life and environment is an important part in rural region. However, the micro-scale process analysis from the perspective of an integrated rural water-food-energy system has not been well investigated to reveal the effects brought by waste management on local environment. The lack of relevant evidence is a major barrier to realize the specific quantitative impacts of distinct waste management systems and the importance of sustainable waste management for local area. In this study, a material and energy flow analysis based on processes is presented in a micro-scale to make systematical comparison between end-pipe-treatment waste management and modern resource-oriented waste management. The results indicated that waste management notably affects the nitrogen and phosphorus flow in rural areas. Moreover, the resource-oriented system can obviously optimize the local water-food-energy nexus in terms of energy recovery and nutrient consumption. Based on the quantity analysis, chemical fertilizer is also found inevitable to guarantee the food supply because of the element system loss in various paths. Besides, the simultaneous optimum point of different nutrient elements is difficult to achieve due to their distinct transfer mechanisms. Our results can help policymakers and publics make better choice in waste management strategy.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, climate change has made the public more concerned about greenhouse gas emissions, and the burning of agricultural waste has been proven to be one of the non-negligible sources of CO 2 emissions leading to global warming. Taiwan is a relatively scarce region with limited land and insufficient landfills to dispose of waste. It provides an opportunity for Taiwan to develop circular agriculture. This study takes the elderly in the Xinxing Community in Dacun Township, Changhua County, Taiwan, as the research object. Using qualitative interviews and quantitative analysis methods, we can more fully and accurately grasp the awareness of the elderly in the Xinxing Community on agricultural waste. The study results show that there is no significant difference in the cognition of agricultural waste treatment among senior citizens in emerging communities whether they are engaged in the grape industry or not. However, there are significant differences in the cognition of agricultural waste resource treatment technology. The cognition of being engaged in the grape industry is higher than that of those who are not engaged in it, and they have a higher cognition of agricultural waste resource treatment technology. In addition, there is no significant difference in the perception of agricultural waste resource reuse operations. This research provides suggestions for the future development of sustainable environments and the management of emerging communities.
