Abstract:We consider a class of diffusion equations with the Caputo time-fractional derivative $\partial_t^\alpha u=L u$ subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here, we consider a fractional order $0<\alpha < 1$ and a second-order operator $L$ which is elliptic and non-symmetric. In this paper, we show that the logarithmic convexity extends to this non-symmetric case provided that the drift coefficient is given by a gradient vector field. Next, we perform some numerical experiments to validate the theoretical results in both symmetric and non-symmetric cases. Finally, some conclusions and open problems will be mentioned.

Abstract:We consider weak solutions of the nonlinear time-fractional biharmonic diffusion equation in subject to the initial conditions , and the Navier boundary conditions , where , , (resp. ) is the fractional derivative of order α (resp. β ) with respect to the time-variable in the Caputo sense, and h is a measurable positive weight function. Using nonlinear capacity estimates specifically adapted to the fourth-order differential operator , the domain, the initial conditions and the boundary condition, a general nonexistence result is established. Next, some special cases of weight functions h are discussed.

Abstract:This contribution considers the time‐fractional subdiffusion with a time‐dependent variable‐order fractional operator of order β(t) . It is assumed that β(t) is a piecewise constant function with a finite number of jumps. A proof technique based on the Fourier method and results from constant‐order fractional subdiffusion equations has been designed. This novel approach results in the well‐posedness of the problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability and logarithmic decay of the solutions to fractional differential equations (FDEs). Both linear and nonlinear cases are included. And the fractional derivative is in the sense of Hadamard or Caputo–Hadamard with order <span class="mathjax-tex">$\alpha \,(0<\alpha <1)$</span>. The solutions can be expressed by Mittag–Leffler functions through applying the modified Laplace transform. In view of the asymptotic expansions of Mittag–Leffler function, we discuss the stability and logarithmic decay of the solution to FDEs in great detail.

Abstract:We propose diffusion-like equations with time and space fractional derivatives of the distributed order for the kinetic description of anomalous diffusion and relaxation phenomena, whose diffusion exponent varies with time and which, correspondingly, can not be viewed as self-affine random processes possessing a unique Hurst exponent. We prove the positivity of the solutions of the proposed equations and establish the relation to the Continuous Time Random Walk theory. We show that the distributed order time fractional diffusion equation describes the sub-diffusion random process which is subordinated to the Wiener process and whose diffusion exponent diminishes in time (retarding sub-diffusion) leading to superslow diffusion, for which the square displacement grows logarithmically in time. We also demonstrate that the distributed order space fractional diffusion equation describes super-diffusion phenomena when the diffusion exponent grows in time (accelerating super-diffusion).

Abstract:We investigate quantitative properties of nonnegative solutions $u(t,x)\ge 0$ to the nonlinear fractional diffusion equation, $\partial_t u + \mathcal{L}F(u)=0$ posed in a bounded domain, $x\in\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, with appropriate homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. As $\mathcal{L}$ we can use a quite general class of linear operators that includes the two most common versions of the fractional Laplacian $(-\Delta)^s$, $0<s<1$, in a bounded domain with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, but it also includes many other examples since our theory only needs some basic properties that are typical of "linear heat semigroups." The nonlinearity $F$ is assumed to be increasing and is allowed to be degenerate, the prototype is the power case $F(u)=|u|^{m-1}u$, with $m>1$. In this paper we propose a suitable class of solutions of the equation, and cover the basic theory: we prove existence, uniqueness of such solutions, and we establish upper bounds of two forms (absolute bounds and smoothing effects), as well as weighted-$L^1$ estimates. The class of solutions is very well suited for that work. The standard Laplacian case $s=1$ is included and the linear case $m=1$ can be recovered in the limit. In a companion paper [12], we will complete the study with more advanced estimates, like the upper and lower boundary behaviour and Harnack inequalities, for which the results of this paper are needed.

Abstract:This paper investigates Cauchy problems of nonlinear parabolic equation with a Caputo fractional derivative. When the initial datum is sufficiently small in some appropriate spaces, we demonstrate the existence in global time and uniqueness of a mild solution in fractional Sobolev spaces using some novel techniques. Under some suitable assumptions on the initial datum, we show that the mild solution of the time fractional parabolic equation converges to the mild solution of the classical problem when α → 1 − . Under some appropriate assumptions on the initial datum, we show that the mild solution of the time fractional diffusion equation converges to the mild solution of the classical problem when α → 1 − . Our theoretical results can be widely applied to many different equations such as the Hamilton–Jacobi equation, the Navier–Stokes equation in two cases: the fractional derivative and the classical derivative. Our paper also provides a completely new answer to the related open problem of convergence of solutions to fractional diffusion equations as the order of fractional derivative approaches 1 − .

Abstract:A system of time‐fractional diffusion equations posed in an exterior domain of RN ( N≥3 ) under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions is investigated in this paper. The time‐fractional derivatives are considered in the Caputo sense. Using nonlinear capacity estimates specifically adapted to the nonlocal properties of the Caputo fractional derivative, the geometry of the domain, and the boundary conditions, we obtain sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of a weak solution to the considered system.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of the discrete fractional Gr{ö}nwall inequality is developed, which is applied to analyze the stability and convergence of a Galerkin spectral method for a linear time-fractional subdiffusion equation. Based on the temporal-spatial error splitting argument technique, the discrete fractional Gr{ö}nwall inequality is also applied to prove the unconditional convergence of a semi-implicit Galerkin spectral method for a nonlinear time-fractional subdiffusion equation.

Abstract:In this work, the solution regularity of a variable-order time-fractional diffusion equation with Mittag-Leffler kernel is analyzed and the uniqueness of determining the variable fractional order based on the observations of the solutions over a small time-space interval is proved. The main difficulty we overcome lies in the technical analysis of the variable-order Mittag-Leffler kernel and its derivatives via special functions, and the proved results provide theoretical supports for the applications of the proposed model in both the direct and inverse manner. Furthermore, the derived methods could be applied to analyze the analogous direct and inverse problems involving the variable-order Caputo–Fabrizio fractional operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Caputo–Hadamard time-space fractional diffusion equation, where the Caputo derivative is defined in the temporal direction and the Hadamard derivative is defined in the spatial direction separately. We first use the Laplace transform and the modified Fourier transform to study the analytical solution of the Cauchy problem. Then, using the Galerkin finite element method in space, we generate a semi-discrete scheme and study the convergence analysis. Furthermore, using the L1 scheme of the Caputo derivative in time, we construct a fully discrete scheme and then discuss the stability and error estimation in detail. Finally, the numerical experiments are displaced to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:This study investigates Caputo-Hadamard fractional differential equations on time scales. The Hadamard fractional sum and difference are defined for the first time. A general logarithm function on time scales is used as a kernel function. New fractional difference equations and their equivalent fractional sum equations are presented by the use of fundamental theorems. Gronwall inequality, asymptotical stability conditions, and two discrete-time Mittag-Leffler functions of Hadamard type are obtained. Numerical schemes are provided and chaos in fractional discrete-time logistic equation and neural network equations are reported.
Smoothing effects and extinction in finite time for fractional fast diffusions on Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:We study nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the Fractional Fast Diffusion Equation on a suitable class of connected, noncompact Riemannian manifolds. This parabolic equation is both singular and nonlocal: the diffusion is driven by the (spectral) fractional Laplacian on the manifold, while the nonlinearity is a concave power makes the diffusion singular, so that solutions lose mass and may extinguish in finite time. Existence of mild solutions follows by nowadays standard nonlinear semigroups techniques, and we use these solutions as the building blocks for a more general class of so-called weak dual solutions, which allow for data both in the usual $L^1$ space and in a larger weighted space, determined in terms of the fractional Green function. We focus in particular on a priori smoothing estimates (also in weighted $L^p$ spaces) for a quite large class of weak dual solutions. We also show pointwise lower bounds for solutions, showing in particular that solutions have infinite speed of propagation. Finally, we start the study of how solutions extinguish in finite time, providing suitable sharp extinction rates.

Abstract:This paper aims to demonstrate a numerical strategy via finite difference formulations for time fractional reaction–diffusion models which are ubiquitous in chemical and biological phenomena. The time-fractional derivative is considered in the Caputo sense for both linear and nonlinear problems. First, the Caputo derivative is replaced with a quadrature formula, then an implicit method is used for the remaining part. In the linear case, the proposed strategy reduces the time fractional models into linear simultaneous equations. In nonlinear cases, Quasilinearization is utilized to tackle the nonlinear parts. With this strategy, solutions of the fractional system transform into linear algebraic systems which are easy to solve. Next, the Von Neumann method is implemented to examine the stability of the scheme which discloses that the scheme is unconditionally stable. Further, the applicability of the presented scheme is tested with different linear and nonlinear models which include the one dimensional Schnakenberg and Gray–Scott models, and one and two dimensional Brusselator models. To analyze the accuracy of the present technique two norms namely, and , and relative error are addressed. Moreover, the obtained outcomes are shown tabulated and graphically which identifies that the scheme properly works for the time fractional reaction–diffusion systems.

Abstract:We present an analysis of existence, uniqueness, and smoothness of the solution to a class of fractional ordinary differential equations posed on the whole real line that models a steady state behavior of a certain anomalous diffusion, advection, and reaction. The anomalous diffusion is modeled by the fractional Riemann-Liouville differential operators. The strong solution of the equation is sought in a Sobolev space defined by means of Fourier Transform. The key component of the analysis hinges on a characterization of this Sobolev space with the Riemann-Liouville derivatives that are understood in a weak sense. The existence, uniqueness, and smoothness of the solution is demonstrated with the assistance of several tools from functional and harmonic analyses.

Abstract:The diffusion process plays a crucial role in various fields, such as fluid dynamics, microorganisms, heat conduction and food processing. Since molecular diffusion usually takes place in complex materials and disordered media, there still exist many challenges in describing the diffusion process in the real world. Fractional calculus is a powerful tool for modelling complex physical processes due to its non-local property. This research generalises a fractional diffusion model by using the distributed-order operator in time and the Riesz fractional derivative in space. Moreover, variable diffusion coefficients are introduced to better capture the diffusion complexity. The fractional diffusion model is discretised by the finite element method in space. The approximation of the distributed-order operator is implemented by Simpson’s rule and the L2-1σ formula. A numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed numerical methods.
