Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To compare visual and instrumental shade matching performances using two shade guides and three color difference formulas.METHODS: One hundred dental students (DS) volunteers (35 males and 65 females) with normal color vision participated in the study. The spectral reflectance of 4 extracted human upper central incisors (UCI) and shade tabs from Vita Classical (VC) and Vita Toothguide 3D-Master (3D) shade guides were measured using a spectroradiometer (SP) under D65 illuminant (diffuse/0° geometry) inside a viewing booth with a gray background. Color coordinates (CIE L*, a*, b*, C* and h°) were calculated according to CIE D65 illuminant and CIE 2° Standard Observer. Color coordinates of UCI were also evaluated using a dental spectrophotometer (EA - Easyshade Advance). DS used VC and 3D to visually select the best shade match for each UCI, under same experimental conditions used for the SP evaluation. Three color difference metrics (CIELAB, CIEDE2000(1:1:1) and CIEDE2000(2:1:1)) were used to calculate the best instrumental shade matching based on minimum color difference.RESULTS: The agreement between visual and instrumental shade matching was greater using SP (25-75%) than EA (0-25%). The percentage of best match for the visual assessment was more consistent using VC (23-55%) than 3D (19-34%). Considering the best performance (using SP and VC), the CIEDE2000(2:1:1) color difference formula showed the best estimate to the visual perception from DS.SIGNIFICANCE: Within the limitations of this study, combining the use of SP, CIEDE2000(2:1:1) and Vita Classical shade guide most closely represented the visual perception of DS. Instrumental shade determination should be accompanied by experienced human visual assessment.

Effects of angle deviations on X-Rite's shadeVision system CIELAB measurements

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of angle deviations on X-Rite's ShadeVision measurements of Vitapan Classical shade tabs. Methods A new set of Vitapan Classical shade guide(Bad Sckingen,Germany) tabs were embedded in pink denture resin.Angle guide devices were fabricated so that the measuring tip of X-Rite's ShadeVision(Michigan,USA) would be placed at thirteen defined angles,including parallel to horizontal plane as the desired measurement,and 5°,10° or 15° incisal,gingival,left or right(5°,10° or 15° incisal,gingival,left or right inclination from the facial horizontal plane).Three CIELAB measurements were made for each set-up.The delta L~*,delta a~*,delta b~* and delta Eab values were calculated.The data were analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA and Student-Newman-keuls multiple comparison methods.Results The L~* values were reduced at 0.22,0.97 and 0.93 for left inclination of 5°,10° or 15°,respectively,while they increased when the right side of the tip formed an angle.Angle deviations in either the incisal or gingival sites also increased the L~* values.As expected,the greatest delta L~* values were detected at 15° incisal(2.84) and gingival(2.37) deviations,which also resulted in the greatest delta E~*ab values(3.22±0.37 and 2.50±0.63 for the 15o incisal and gingival,respectively). The delta Eab values of 15° right and left angle deviations were 1.87±0.59 and 1.20±0.25,respectively.Data analyses showed that,compared with other deviations,the delta E~*ab values of 15° incisal and gingival were significant higher(P<0.05) and they were also significantly different from each other(P<0.05).Conclusion Proper positioning of X-Rite's ShadeVision measuring tip is critical to obtain correct tooth color measurement,and angle deviations,particularly on the incisal and gingival sides,with need to be adequately controlled during the measurement.
[Coverage errors of five shade guide systems to vital natural teeth]

Abstract:Objective: To compare the coverage errors (CE) of five different shade guides in anterio vital natural teeth of selected people. Methods: Anterior vital natural teeth were measured with Crystaleye spectrophotometer, color coordinates of the teeth and five shade guides A (VITA Classical), B (VITA 3D-Master), C (Chromascop), D (Shofu Vintage Halo NCC) and E (Noritake)were analyzed with the supporting software. The CE of the five shade guide systems to natural teeth were evaluated in cervical, body and incisal regions, and difference in CE among shade guides was determined. Results: In the cervical region, shade guide A had the maximal CE value (3.09 ± 0.97) and shade guide D had the minimal CE value (1.62 ± 0.75).In the body region, CE of shade guide B (1.65 ± 0.64) and shade guide D (1.52 ± 0.74) were lower than those of shade guides A (2.04 ± 0.80), C (2.04 ± 0.90) and E (2.02 ± 0.84) (P < 0.05).In the incisal part, all CE were below 2.00, and again shade guide A had the maximal CE value (1.81 ± 0.86) and shade guide D had the minimal CE value (1.28 ± 0.55). Conclusions: Within the limitation of the study, shade guide D had better color coverage of natural teeth in cervical, body and incisal regions.

Abstract:Monochlorogallane, synthesized by the metathesis of gallium(III) chloride with an excess of trimethylsilane at ca. 250 K, has been characterized by chemical analysis, by its IR, Raman, and 1H NMR spectra, and by the products of its reaction with trimethylamine. The vibrational spectra of the vapor species isolated in solid Ar, N2, or CH4 matrixes at ca. 12 K imply the presence of only one species, viz. the dimer with an equilibrium structure conforming to D2h symmetry. The structure of this molecule has been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) measurements augmented by the results of ab initio molecular orbital calculations. An equilibrium structure with D2h symmetry has been assumed in the analysis of the electron diffraction pattern. However, as the molecule has a very low frequency Ga(mu-Cl)2Ga ring-puckering mode, a dynamic model was used to describe it with the aid of a set of pseudoconformers spaced at even intervals (deltadelta = 5 degrees, deltamax, = 20 delta) around the ring-puckering angle delta and Boltzmann-weighted according to a quartic potential V(delta) = V4delta4 + V2delta2. The differences in bond distances and angles between the different pseudoconformers were constrained to the values derived from the ab initio calculations employing second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) methods (with all the electrons included in the correlation calculations) and a 6-311G(d) basis set. The results for the weighted average of the principal distances (ralpha) and angles (<alpha) (with estimated 1sigma uncertainties) from the combined GED/ab initio study are r(Ga-Cl) 2.350(2) A, r(Ga-H) 1.523(20) A, <Cl-Ga-Cl 89.7(5)degrees, <H-Ga-H 135.1 degrees, V4 3.0 x 10(-6) kcal mol(-1) deg(-4), and V2 6.0 x 10(-4) kcal mol(-1) deg(-2).
Comparison of the Accuracy and Reliability of Instrumental Shade Selection Devices and Visual Shade Selection: An in Vitro Study

Abstract:Objective: New shade-matching devices are available for clinical use, but their accuracy and reliability have not been investigated. This in vitro study compared the accuracy and reliability of a shade-matching colorimeter (Optishade), a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V), and visual shade matching in simulated clinical conditions. Material and methods: Shade matching was conducted with two digital devices; (Optishade and Vita Easyshade) and the visual shade selection method, with a new 16-tab Vita Classical shade guide. Shade tabs were placed within a gingival matrix and measurements were taken from the central area of each shade tab enclosed in a black box to simulate the oral cavity. Visual assessments were conducted independently by two examiners. For the reliability assessment, each shade tab was measured 20 times by each examiner. Accuracy was calculated as a percentage of the matching readings with the actual shade per each tab. Data were analyzed with the one-way ANOVA test (α = 0.05) and Pairwise Comparison (Bonferroni Post hoc Test) to assess accuracy. The reliability evaluation was conducted by comparison between both examiners using mean and standard deviation; by a two-tailed t-test for the independent samples for all the three groups included in the study. Result: The shade matching accuracy of Optishade was 97.50%, Vita Easyshade 89.38%, and visual method 62.19%. Statistically, high significant difference in accuracy (p < 0.001) was found when comparing both Optishade and VITA Easyshade with the visual method. Additionally, there was statistically significant difference in accuracy (p < 0.05) when Optishade was compared to Vita Easyshade. The reliability of the Optishade was 99.6% and Vita Easy shade was 99.38%. Statistically, showed no statistically significant difference in the reliability of shade match obtained within the same group when comparing the readings of Examiner 1 and Examiner 2 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The colorimeter demonstrated the highest accuracy, followed by the spectrophotometer, and the visual shade selection method. Both digital methods investigated in this study showed comparable reliability. Clinical implication: The results of this study emphasize the clinical advantage of digital shade-matching devices over visual shade-matching. The colorimeter offers high accuracy for shade matching and should be considered to use for shade matching especially with restorations in the esthetic zone.

Abstract:Background: The choice of the correct color is of paramount importance in esthetic dentistry; however, there is still no consensus on the best technique to determine it. The aim of the present study is to compare the accuracy of a recently introduced colorimeter in shade matching with human vision. In addition, possible variables affecting color-matching by human eye have been analysed. Methods: 18 disc-shaped composite samples with identical size and shape were produced from a composite flow system (Enamel plus HriHF, Micerium): Nine were considered control samples (UD 0-UD 6), and nine were test samples with identical flow composite shade to the control ones. Parallelly, 70 individuals (dental students and dental field professionals) were individually instructed to sit in a dark room illuminated with D55 light and to perform visual shade matching between control and test discs. An error matrix containing ΔE94 between control and test discs was generated, containing four match-clusters depending on perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. The frequency and severity of errors were examined. Results: The colorimeter achieved a 100% perfect matching, while individuals only achieved a 78%. A higher occurrence of mismatches was noted for intermediate composite shades without a statistically significant difference. No statistically significant differences were reported for age, sex, and experience. A statistically significant difference was present among the Optishade match and the visual determination. Conclusions: The instrumental shade-matching evaluation proved to be significantly more reliable than the human visual system. Further research is needed to determine whether the same outcomes are achieved in a clinical setting directly on patients.
Comparison of the Clinical Evaluation of Digital Tooth Shade Determination Using an Intraoral Scanner with Proven Subjective and Objective Methods

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Despite the increasing use of chromatic intraoral scanners, color determination is often performed visually, offering poor reliability and validity. In this study, we aimed to compare the reliability and validity of the tooth shade determination tool of an intraoral scanner (Trios3 Color) with that of two dental spectrophotometers (VITA Easyshade Advance 4.0 and SpectroShade Micro) and with visual determination using the VITA 3D-Master shade guide. Methods: In vivo tooth shade determination was performed on 33 participants using positioning splints for the right central incisor. Repeated measurements assessed the reliability in determining the percentage agreement with VITA 3D-Master shades. VITA Easyshade measurements were used as reference values for validity. The metric value Delta E (ΔE) in the International Commission on Illumination L*a*b* color space was compared to the reference, with ΔE greater than 1 indicating visible differences and a maximum value of ΔE 6.8 being clinically acceptable. Results: The reliabilities of VITA Easyshade, the intraoral scanner, and SpectroShade Micro were 75.8%, 87.9%, and 89.9%, respectively. The visual method had an agreement rate of 20.6%. Validity values, compared with the reference value, were ΔE 3.8 (clinically acceptable), 8.3, and 7.4 (the latter two both being clinically unacceptable) for the intraoral scanner, area-measuring device, and visual method, respectively. Conclusions: The intraoral scanner is a reliable and valid tool for tooth shade determination and is superior to the visual method in both aspects.

Abstract:Tooth color is a determining factor in the fabrication of dental prostheses. The aim of the present study is to compare two measurement methods used in the field of dentistry: dental guides and spectrophotometry. A total of 2768 natural teeth were measured using the Vita Classical and Vita 3D-Master dental guides (Vita-Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany), as well as a Vita Easyshade Compact spectrophotometer (Vita-Zahnfabrik). The measurements were carried out by one operator under suitable illumination conditions at 5500 degrees Kelvin. The obtained results show that the measurements obtained with the Vita Classical dental guide classifies teeth into the A-B categories, while the spectrophotometer preferentially classifies teeth into the B-C categories. The correlation coefficients obtained with the dental guides ranged from −0.32 to −0.39 (p < 0.01), while those for the spectrophotometer ranged from −0.35 to −0.55 (p < 0.01). Therefore, we can conclude that the spectrophotometer is more reliable and reproducible in its measurements than the dental guides.

In Vitro Evaluation of Accuracy and Reliability of Tooth Shade Selection Using Different Digital Instruments

Abstract:Introduction Managing tooth shade is a significant challenge in aesthetic dentistry, especially for anterior restorations. Accurate shade assessment, combined with tailored treatment strategies and effective communication, is crucial. To improve the precision and reliability of aesthetic dental treatments, new shade-matching technologies have emerged. Current clinical methods for determining tooth shade utilize both visual assessments and instrumental techniques. The current study aimed to assess and compare the reliability and accuracy of four digital methods of tooth shade matching. Materials and methods This study utilized a 3D-printed resin upper arch model with tooth preparation done on tooth 11. An intraoral scanner was employed to scan and design the tooth, followed by the fabrication of 30 zirconia crowns using computer-aided design and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM). The assessment of shade matching involved four digital photometric methodologies (group 1: twin flash + digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera (DT), group 2: ring flash + DSLR camera (DR), group 3: smartphone camera (SMART), group 4: intraoral scanner (IOS)) with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIEL*a*b*) values determined through Adobe Photoshop transformation. Accuracy (ΔE) was calculated and a specific shade using Vitablocs Mark II 3D-Master served as the standard. CIEL*a*b* data (where L = lightness, a and b = chromaticity coordinates) from four cohorts were analyzed in SPSS 26.0 for reliability, with intraclass correlation. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's correlation assessed reliability, while a one-sample t-test assessed accuracy, comparing values to clinical thresholds (p<0.05). Results The intraclass correlation revealed noteworthy variations in the L*, a*, and b* values, spanning from 0.730 to 0.994, 0.885 to 0.992, and 0.881 to 0.997, respectively. Intraoral scanners demonstrated high accuracy (ΔE = 5.8), while the SMART method showed the lowest precision (ΔE = 12.09). Twin flash with DSLR (TF+DSLR) and ring flash with DSLR (RF+DSLR) displayed comparable precision, with ΔE values of 10.90 and 10.97 respectively. Conclusion The smartphone exhibited the least precision, displaying notable discrepancies in all CIEL*a*b* metrics when compared to the manufacturer-specified shades. Conversely, the intraoral scanner demonstrated higher accuracy and reliability compared to the other groups, with no discernible variation in any of the CIEL*a*b* values from the manufacturer's standard.
Visual evaluation of the color adjustment of single-shade and group shade resin composites in restorations with different cavity configurations

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the influence of the tooth shade, type of resin composite and cavity configuration on the color adjustment of single-shade and group shade resin composites. Methods: Class I and V cavities were prepared in artificial acrylic mandibular right molars with different shades - A1, A2, A3, A3.5 and A4. Three single-shade (OMN, UNI, CHA) and two group shade (FIL, HAR) resin composites were evaluated. Seventy-five observers, including dentists, dental students and laypersons (n = 25), participated in the study. A psychophysical experiment based on visual assessments of the color matching between each tooth and each restoration was ranked from 0 (excellent match) to 4 (huge mismatch), and mean frequencies (%) were calculated. Visual color differences among composite materials and tooth shades were statistically tested (P < 0.05). Results: The results showed highest percentages of unacceptable color mismatches for class V compared to class I restorations, especially for more chromatic tooth shades (A3.5 and A4). The percentage of ratings of acceptability was higher for laypersons group. For class V, OMN presented significant difference only from UNI in tooth shades A1, A2, A3 and A4. However, for class I, OMN presented significant differences with CHA for A1, A2 and A4, and with HAR and FIL for A1. Conclusions: Class I resin composite restorations exhibit superior color matching than Class V, with lighter and low chroma tooth shades demonstrating better color adjustment. The color matching of both cavity configurations is comparable for single and group shade resin composites. Clinical significance: Cavity configuration and tooth shade may impact color matching of single and group shade resin composites. This study demonstrates superior color matching in class I configurations over class V for both single and group shade resin composites. Additionally, restorations placed in teeth with lighter shades exhibit more favorable color adjustment.
Comparison of in vivo visual, spectrophotometric and colorimetric shade determination of teeth and implant-supported crowns

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reliability and re-producibility of digital shade selection devices, and to correlate the results with conventional human visual shade assessment. Materials and methods: Tooth color gradation and agreement of two different digital shade selection instruments were determined by employing a spectro-photometer (ShadePilot, Degudent; Hanau, Germany, Software V. 2.41) and acolorimeter (ShadeVision, Ammann Girrbach; Pforzheim, Germany; Software V. 1.20). The devices were compared with three human examiners with a negative history of visual color deficiency, looking at 40 subjects under clinical conditions. In one half of the test persons, the visual and digital shade determination was performed on the right maxillary central incisor that was free of any restoration, whereas the other half was carried out in subjects with single implant-supported PFM crowns in the same region. The computer-based readings across the regions (incisal, middle, cervical) were recorded two consecutive times. Differences between the computer-based readings were evaluated with the chi2 test (Chi-square). Results: The same shade was obtained by all three human examiners in 22.5% (9 of 40 cases), by all colorimetric readings in 35% (14 of 40 cases), and by all spectrophotometric readings in 55% (22 of 40 cases). There was considerable agreement between the first and second reading of the investigated spectrophotometric and colorimetric shade instruments. The spectrophotometer demonstrated color matches of the first and second reading in 81.7% of the in vivo measurements (coefficient of contingency = 0.98; chi2 test p = 0.99), while the colorimeter exhibited matches in 70% (coefficient of contingency = 0.96; chi2 test p = 0.96) of the cases. Hence, the spectrophotometer exhibited the highest agreement between the two consecutive readings. While no significant influ-ence of the measuring point (incisal, middle, cervical) on the reproducibility of color results could be ascertained, both the colorimeter and spectrophotometer displayed a statistically significant difference for the frequency distribution of color categories for teeth vs PFM crowns (both chi2 test p < 0.0001). The measuring results of the colorimeter showed distinctly lighter shades than those of the spectrophotometer. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that spectrophotometric shade determination is more reproducible compared to conventional visual shade assessment. It can serve as a reliable addition in color matching and enhances the level of shade analysis, communication, interpretation, and fabrication of dental restorations.

Abstract:Background: Improper shade selection is one of the most common causes behind restorations’ remake and patient dissatisfaction. Multiple protocols and devices have been proposed to address the limitations of visual shade selection. Objective: To compare the accuracy of dental shade matching gathered visually with both VITA Classical (VC) and VITA 3D-Master (V3D) shade guides with those obtained instrumentally with both 3Shape Trios 3 and VITA Easyshade® Advance 4.0. Materials and Methods: For visual shade selection (VSS), one- hundred participants from King AbdulAziz University, Faculty of Dentistry participated in the study and asked to select the shade of six masked shade tabs from both VC [A1, A2, B1] and V3D [1M1, 2M3, 3R1.]. Later, Instrumental shade determination (ISD) was completed by one experienced participant for six cycles using: VEasy and Trios 3. Results: Significant difference was found between VSS and ISD. The results suggested that although participants significantly preferred VC over V3D in terms of VSS, this did not improve the shade selection performance. Besides, in ISD, no significant difference was reported between VEsay and Trios 3. There was no statistical significance difference between neither Trios 3 when combined with VC and V3D nor between VEasy when combined with VC and V3D. VEasy showed the best shade selection performance when combined with V3D, although the difference was non-significant. Conclusion: The result of the present study supports the promising use of the intra oral scanner 3Shape Trios 3 and dental spectrophotometer VITA Easyshade® Advance 4.0. Combination with a visual selection method may result in more accurate and reliable results.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The procedure for determining the color of teeth can be carried out visually using colors or special devices, or both methods at the same time. The visual definition of shades using popular instrumental techniques, although ubiquitous, is nevertheless very subjective. The hardware method for determining the color of teeth consists in an objective computer analysis of the image obtained under ideal optical conditions. Ambient light should not affect the color detection results obtained by spectrophotometers and colorimeters. The main advantage of the hardware method of determining the color of teeth is the elimination of subjectivity. The world scientific literature describes many studies comparing the quality of color determination by hardware and visual methods. However, these data differ, and the conclusions are not unambiguous in the choice of a particular method, therefore, the clinical effectiveness of digital technologies for determining the color of teeth, as well as the scientific justification of their use, is an urgent problem of modern dentistry. AIM: To evaluate the accuracy of determining the color of teeth with digital dental devices in comparison with the visual assessment of color by an expert group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In order to achieve this goal and form the design of the study, we analyzed the sources of scientific literature. The information search was carried out in the scientific electronic databases eLibrary, Scopus, PubMed in the period from 2002 to 2020, according to the keywords of the query: methods for determining the color of teeth, comparison of methods for determining the color of teeth, hardware methods for determining the color of teeth. The results of the study of special literature on this topic have identified the most accurate and frequently used methods for determining color in practical healthcare. Of the visual methods, preference is given to determining the color of teeth using the colors VITA Toothguide 3D-Master (VITA Zahnfabrik, Germany) and VITA Classical (VITA Zahnfabrik, Germany). Of the devices, among spectrophatometers, most authors prefer VITA Easyshade (VITA Zahnfabrik, Germany) and Spectro Shade (Micro High Technologies, Italy), among hybrid devices (intraoral scanners) 3Shape TRIOS (3Shape, Denmark). The evaluation of the accuracy of determining the color of teeth by digital dental devices was carried out on 20 natural right medial central incisors of 20 patients in a dental office. The effectiveness of these devices was determined in comparison with the teeth color indicators determined by the expert group. For each pair of the studied methods, Cohens kappa was determined a statistical coefficient for determining the mutual reliability of appraisers. When calculating Cohens mouthguard, the results of color determination for each third of the tooth surface were compared separately by compiling multi-field tables. Statistical processing was carried out in Excel 2016. RESULTS: According to the interpretation intervals of Cohens kappa values, mutual reliability of evaluators is defined as excellent at values from 0.75 to 1.0, good from 0.6 to 0.74, acceptable and bad from 0.4 to 0.59 and less than 0.4, respectively. The Spectra Shade device showed excellent consistency with experts in determining the color of the tooth in all three parts of the surface. Vita Easyshade V showed less consistency with the expert assessment, but its level is interpreted as good. The color detection data using the 3Shape Trios digital scanner did not agree well with the opinion of experts. The devices showed consistency between themselves in the range from acceptable to good, while mutual reliability in the Spectra Shade - Vita Easyshade V pair turned out to be better than others. CONCLUSION: Taking into account the fact that the accuracy of the devices does not depend on the factors to which a person is exposed, such as subjectivity, illumination, time of day, eye fatigue, the color of nearby teeth, etc., it is advisable to use the Spectra Shade and Vita Easyshade V devices in clinical practice to increase the objectivity of color determination and improve patient satisfaction with dental treatment.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to determine 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT) and 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT) of dental ceramic under simulated clinical settings.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spectral radiance of 63 monochromatic ceramic specimens was determined using a non-contact spectroradiometer. A total of 60 specimen pairs, divided into 3 sets of 20 specimen pairs (medium to light shades, medium to dark shades, and dark shades), were selected for psychophysical experiment. The coordinating center and seven research sites obtained the Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals prior the beginning of the experiment. Each research site had 25 observers, divided into five groups of five observers: dentists-D, dental students-S, dental auxiliaries-A, dental technicians-T, and lay persons-L. There were 35 observers per group (five observers per group at each site ×7 sites), for a total of 175 observers. Visual color comparisons were performed using a viewing booth. Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy approximation was used for fitting the data points. The 50:50% PT and 50:50% AT were determined in CIELAB and CIEDE2000. The t-test was used to evaluate the statistical significance in thresholds differences.RESULTS: The CIELAB 50:50% PT was ΔEab = 1.2, whereas 50:50% AT was ΔEab = 2.7. Corresponding CIEDE2000 (ΔE00 ) values were 0.8 and 1.8, respectively. 50:50% PT by the observer group revealed differences among groups D, A, T, and L as compared with 50:50% PT for all observers. The 50:50% AT for all observers was statistically different than 50:50% AT in groups T and L.CONCLUSION: A 50:50% perceptibility and ATs were significantly different. The same is true for differences between two color difference formulas ΔE00 /ΔEab . Observer groups and sites showed high level of statistical difference in all thresholds.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Visual color difference thresholds can serve as a quality control tool to guide the selection of esthetic dental materials, evaluate clinical performance, and interpret visual and instrumental findings in clinical dentistry, dental research, and subsequent standardization. The importance of quality control in dentistry is reinforced by increased esthetic demands of patients and dental professionals.

Comparison of visual shade matching and electronic color measurement device

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the performance of visual shade matching and spectrophotometric measurements. Materials and methods: A total of 100 observers matched pairs of corresponding shade tabs from two VITA classical A1-D4 shade guides. The tab identifiers on one shade guide were masked. Lack of visible color differences between the corresponding tabs was confirmed by means of an intraoral spectrophotometer. Means and standard deviations were calculated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α = 0.05) with a Bonferroni correction was performed to detect significance of differences between groups. Results: A total of 72.5% of tab pairs (or 11.6 tabs) were matched using the visual method, and 98.9% were matched using the spectrophotometer (P < 0.001). Female observers showed significantly better results than male observers (P = 0.027). Both genders showed the highest visual scores in group B, followed by groups C, A, and D. Conclusions: Instrumental shade-matching systems have the potential to improve color matching in dentistry. Results were influenced by gender. Clinical relevance: The dental spectrophotometer exhibited a significantly higher percentage of correct matches of corresponding shade tabs compared with conventional visual shade matching.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare visual and spectrophotometric shade matching using Vita Easyshade and to evaluate its accuracy.METHODS:One hundred and twenty participants with single anterior full ceramic restorations were included in this study. Subjects were randomly assigned to 2 groups, the visual shade matching group (Group V) and the spectrophotometric shade matching (Vita Easyshade) group (Group S). In each group, subjects were allocated into 2 subgroups, those matched with shade tabs (V1, S1) and those out of shade tabs (V2, S2). Following the treatment, the Commission International de I'Eclairage Lab parameters were tested using the spectrophotometric, and the DeltaEab* between the restoration and contrast teeth was calculated.RESULTS:There were significant differences between DeltaEab*V (3.92 +/- 1.59) and DeltaEab*S (2.23 +/- 0.96), and also between DeltaEab*V2 (4.42 +/- 1.42) and DeltaEab*S2 (2.27 +/- 1.01), DeltaEab*V1 (2.29 +/- 0.88) and DeltaEab*V2 (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference between DeltaEab*V1 and DeltaEab*S1 (2.12 +/- 0.84) (P = 0.698), nor between DeltaEab*S1 and DeltaEab*S2 (P = 0.014).CONCLUSIONS:Spectrophotometric (Vita Easyshade) shade matching method is more accurate than visual shade matching when used on tooth that has out-of-shade-tab colour expression. It provides better colour reappearance, than does visual colour matching.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the color reproduction which was matched by visual method.Methods: The clinician selected the best match to an incisor needed restoration for 100 patients by visual shade guide.The sample of the Vitapan shade tabs and the nature teeth were measured with Shofu shadeEye NCC to determine the CIE1976L*a*b* color parameters.The mean color difference values between shade tabs and nature teeth were calculated.Results: The color difference(△E) values between shade tabs and nature teeth were 0.26-6.70.There was significant difference in L* value between shade tabs and nature teeth.Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study,There are difference in color between natural teeth and the selected shade tabs.

Abstract:Purpose Many factors can affect the aesthetics of dental restorations, including the instrumental techniques used in shade matching, and can lead to clinical failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using the cross‐polarization digital photograph technique and intraoral scanners for shade matching, and also evaluate the effect of the level of clinical experience on shade matching success. Materials and Methods Color analysis was performed on the maxillary right central incisors of 10 subject models with Vita Easyshade. Intraoral scanning was performed 10 times on each model using TRIOS 3 and color analysis was performed from the same spot. Then cross‐polarized and non‐polarized photographs of the models were taken with standard settings using a gray reference card. Each shade tab of the Vita System 3D‐Master scale was also photographed with two different polarization techniques. Four groups (n = 12), including prosthodontics faculty staff, postgraduate students in prosthodontics, undergraduate students, and dental technicians matched the shade tabs and the model photographs obtained with both techniques on a standardized computer screen. Finally, the color differences between the shade tabs and maxillary central incisors matched by observers from four different groups were recorded using a colorimeter, Classic Color Meter, in accordance with the CIELAB system and CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) values were calculated. The data were compared with the acceptability threshold of 1.80 for ΔE00. The data obtained from the observers were analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 Release Notes program. Independent Samples t‐test was used to compare normally distributed data according to binary groups. The level of significance was 0.05. Results A statistically significant difference was found in the shade matching on photographs taken with different techniques in postgraduate students (p = 0.02). Also, there was a statistically significant difference in success between the groups that made shade matching based on photographs obtained with the non‐polarization technique (p = 0.00). The undergraduate students achieved statistically significantly lower results than all other groups (ΔE00 = 5.57 ± 1.07). The kappa value between the intraoral scanner and spectrophotometer results was 0.10, and this value was not statistically significant (p = 0.32). Conclusions The cross‐polarization technique used especially for shade matching is not superior to the non‐polarization technique. Academic and clinical experience might be correlated with shade‐matching success with the non‐polarization technique. The clinical acceptability threshold could not be achieved in the shade matchings made on digital photographs taken with both techniques. Shade matching performed with an intraoral scanner did not yield reliable results.

Abstract:Objectives The terms 'accuracy' and 'precision' are tightly defined in color science but are often used ambiguously in dental research. This study introduces the visual instrument agreement scale ( VIAS ), a new method for determining visual-instrumental agreement in dental colorimetry by comparing visually perceived and measured color differences. Materials and Methods In-vivo tooth color measurements were taken from 16 participants using four intraoral scanners (Primescan, Medit i700, Carestream CS3700, Trios 3) and one spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade V). Visual shade assessment was also performed by one expert observer using the 3D Master shade guide. Statistical significance testing was conducted using the STRESS index to calculate VIAS , and the F -statistic was used to evaluate device performance. Results Carestream CS3700 achieved the highest visual-instrumental agreement with a VIAS score of 82%, performing significantly better than the other devices. Primescan, Medit i700, and Trios 3 showed scores of 76%, 75%, and 72%, respectively, with no significant differences between them. Vita Easyshade V scored 57%, performing significantly worse than the other devices. Conclusions The overall performance of the intraoral scanners was strong, with Carestream CS3700 approaching excellent performance. The VIAS method offers a practical, color science-based framework for evaluating visual-instrumental agreement and can be easily replicated using the freely available toolbox. Clinical Significance Intraoral scanners performed surprisingly better than a spectrophotometer specifically designed for tooth color measurement and which is often regarded as the gold standard. Additionally, VIAS offers a new, scientifically grounded approach for testing visual-instrumental agreement in dental colorimetry.

Repeatability and reliability of human eye in visual shade selection

Abstract:Deficiencies in the human visual percep-tion system have challenged the efficiency of the visual shade-matching protocol. The aim of this study was to evaluate the repeatability and reliability of human eye in visual shade selection. Fifty-four volunteering dentists were asked to match the shade of an upper right central incisor tooth of a single subject. The Vita 3D-Master shade guide was used for the protocol. Before each shade-matching procedure, the definitive codes of the shade tabs were hidden by an opaque strip and the shade tabs were placed into the guide randomly. The procedure was repeated 1 month later to ensure that visual memory did not affect the results. The L*, a* and b* values of the shade tabs were measured with a dental spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade) to produce quantitative values to evaluate the protocol. The paired samples t-test and Pearson correlation test were used to compare the 1st and 2nd selections. The Yates-corrected chi-square test was use to compare qualitative values. Statistical significance was accepted at P < 0·05. Comparing baseline and 1st month records, statistical significance (P < 0·001) was found among qualitative data regarding repeatability on a yes/no (1/0) basis, revealing a very low percentage of repeatability (11·1%). Comparing baseline and 1st month records, statistical significance was not found (P = 0·000) among the L*, a*, b* and ΔE variables. These results indicate that dentists perform insufficiently regarding repeatability in visual shade matching, but they are able to select clinically acceptable shades.
