Abstract:One of the many attempts to stop the danger of tobacco smoking is the development of an anti-smoking vaccine using nicotine butyric acid (NBA) linked to a carrier protein to produce anti-nicotine antibodies. NBA is a chiral molecule and there is a need to obtain a high degree of enantiomeric purity. The aim of this work is to develop a novel method for the enantioseparation of NBA and the determination of trace amounts of enantiomeric impurity required by regulatory authorities. This was achieved successfully using high-performance capillary electrophoresis combined with label-free intrinsic imaging as new imaging technology. A 50 μm id fused-silica capillary was used with UV detection at λ(214 ) nm and label-free intrinsic imaging. The background electrolyte consisted of highly sulphated β-cyclodextrin 10% m/V as a chiral selector in 75 mM phosphoric acid-triethylamine at pH 7.0. Baseline separation and detection of 0.1% and possibly less of the unwanted impurity (R-enantiomer) were achieved. Also, the detection limits were calculated for both enantiomers. The use of label-free intrinsic imaging has improved the sensitivity, enabling us to detect trace amounts of enantiomeric impurities.
Electron delocalization refining via single atom substitution in conjugated organic polymers for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 conversion: Get the big picture from small details

Abstract:The atom refining strategy is used for the design of COP-X (X = S, N, O) as the efficient photocatalysts for CO2 conversion. Both photoelectrochemical experiments and computational explorations demonstrate that the electron delocalization and reaction barrier can be well regulated by single atom substitution of S, N and O in the 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene linked COPs. Based on the prominent electron donating capacity of S, the fast electron transfer and prolonged lifetime of photoinduced charge carriers endow COP-S with superior photocatalytic CO2 conversion efficiency and selectivity. The CO production rate reaches 196.4 μmol g-1h−1 without the presence of cocatalysts and sacrificial agents, which is 2.1-folds and 2.5-folds of COP-N and COP-O. In particular, the oxidization of H2O to O2 is also realized on bulk COP-S. Our explorations expand the COPs skeleton engineering toolbox and provide new guidance for the design of efficient catalysts for solar energy utilizations.

Abstract:Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from solar energy, oxygen and water is an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach. However, the efficiency is highly restricted by the limited light absorption, charge separation and oxygen capture to the active centers. In this study, a novel hydrophilic o-phenanthroline-based covalent organic polymer (COP) with reversible iminol-to-ketoenamine tautomeric structure was successfully prepared through Schiff base reaction. The highly conjugated structure significantly enhances its visible light absorption and accelerates the eaain and migration of photogenerated charges. Furthermore, the o-phenanthroline linker facilitates the adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules, and the hydrophilicity is highly advantageous for the rapid photocatalytic reactions. Therefore, the as-prepared COP exhibits excellent photocatalytic H2O2 production performance (814 μmol·g-1 h-1) without the addition of any cocatalysts or sacrificial agents. This work provides a new example for the design of photocatalysts based on covalent organic polymers towards H2O2 production.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) featuring with extended π‐structures, large specific surface area and tailor‐made functionalities are a class of promising organic photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water. However, the photocatalytic activities of most CMPs are severely hindered by slow charge transfer rate and fast charge recombination process. Herein, we develop a strategy for the synthesis of donor‐acceptor CMPs through nickel(0)‐catalyzed Yamamoto cross‐coupling of 3,6‐dibromo‐9‐(4‐bromophenyl)carbazole (CZ) with 5,5'‐dibromo‐2,2'‐bipyridine (DBPy) for efficient HER from water. The PCZN‐4 prepared with a 2:3 stoichiometric ratio of CZ to DBPy exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen rate of 7160 μmol g‐1 h‐1, which was nearly equal to 179 times and 143 times that of PCZN‐1 (40 μmol g‐1 h‐1) and PCZN‐6 (50 μmol g‐1 h‐1) obtained by Yamamoto homocoupling of CZ and DBPy, respectively. Compared to the homocoupling counterparts, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the PCZN‐4 results from improved separation efficiency of charge carriers. Interestingly, the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of PCZN‐4 could be further improved up to 17080 μmol g‐1 h‐1 by adjusting pH of the aqueous solution. This work offers a novel approach for improving photocatalytic efficiency by tuning the chemical structures and surrounding microenvironment of the polymer backbone. Abstract:The reduction of CO2 with visible light is a highly sustainable method for producing valuable chemicals. The function-led design of organic conjugated semiconductors with more chemical variety than that of inorganic semiconductors has emerged as a method for achieving carbon photofixation chemistry. Here, we report the molecular engineering of triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers to capture, activate and reduce CO2 to CO with visible light. The optical band gap of the CMPs is engineered by varying the organic electron-withdrawing (benzothiadiazole) and electron-donating units (thiophene) on the skeleton of the triazine rings while creating organic donor-acceptor junctions to promote the charge separation. This engineering also provides control of the texture, surface functionality and redox potentials of CMPs for achieving the light-induced conversion of CO2 to CO ambient conditions.

Abstract:2D imide‐based covalent organic polymer nanosheets (CoPcPDA‐CMP NSs) are fabricated as a Z‐scheme photocatalyst to achieve the overall CO2 reduction reaction with a CO production rate of 14.27 µmol g−1 h−1 and a CO selectivity of 92%.It is still a challenging target to achieve photocatalytic CO2 conversion to valuable chemicals with H2O as an electron donor. Herein, 2D imide‐based covalent organic polymer nanosheets (CoPcPDA‐CMP NSs), which integrate cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) moiety for reduction half‐reaction and 3,4,9,10‐perylenetetracarboxylic diimide moiety for oxidation half‐reaction, are constructed as a Z‐scheme artificial photosynthesis system to complete the overall CO2 reduction reaction. Owing to the outstanding light absorption capacity, charge separation efficiency, and electronic conductivity, CoPcPDA‐CMP NSs exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity to reduce CO2 to CO using H2O as a sacrificial agent with a CO production rate of 14.27 µmol g−1 h−1 and a CO selectivity of 92%, which is competitive to the state‐of‐the‐art visible‐light‐driven organic photocatalysts towards the overall CO2 reduction reaction. According to a series of spectroscopy experiments, the authors also verify the photoexcited electron transfer processes in the CoPcPDA‐CMP NSs photocatalytic system, confirming the Z‐scheme photocatalytic mechanism. The present results should be helpful for fabricating high‐performance organic photocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:The semiconductor-mediated solar-driven the conversion of CO2 into the value-added fuels is considered as an ideal strategy for sustainable development. However, conventional semiconductors usually suffer from unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance due to the low efficiency of photo-induced carrier separation and sluggish interface adsorption/desorption equilibrium of reactants/products. Herein, novel carbonized polymer dots (CPDs)/PbBiO2Br heterojunction photocatalysts have been prepared via self-sacrificing ionic liquid, which not only act as the template and reactant to induce the formation of PbBiO2Br material, but also act as the glue to in situ anchor CPDs on the surface of PbBiO2Br material to form composites through hydrogen bond. Without sacrificial reagent, the obtained CPDs/PbBiO2Br materials synthesized with ionic liquid exhibit a high selectivity, stability and enhanced CO evolution rate in water. The introduction of CPDs not only effectively promote the light absorbance and separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons, but also adjust the adsorption/desorption equilibria of reactants/products on the CPDs/PbBiO2Br catalyst surface, such as boosting CO2 adsorption capacity, proton affinity and CO liberation. The reaction mechanism has been proposed with in situ FT-IR spectrometry. The strategy for the preparation of high-performance CO2 photoreduction catalysts can be extended to design and tune other advanced photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Solar-driven highly efficient CO2 photoreduction by water oxidation to produce high-value-added chemical feedstocks of fuels remains extremely challenging. Over the past few decades, two types of reaction modes (solid–liquid or solid–gas) have been developed by researchers to achieve substrate-based photocatlytic CO2 reduction. In the absence of organic solvents, photosensitizers, and organic sacrificial agents, the solid–gas mode may be more suitable for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A facile hydrothermal method was used to fabricate a low-cost and photosensitive azobenzene tetracarboxylic acid-based metal–organic framework (MOF), PCN-250-Fe3, which offers the advantages of visible-light and CO2 adsorption and facilitates an electron-coupled proton transition. Notably, PCN-250-Fe3 exhibited a maximum photocatalytic activity of 16.32 μmol g–1 with ca. 77.57% selectivity in 4 h without the use of photosensitizers or organic sacrificial agents under visible-light irradiation. This photocatalytic performance is superior to that of most nonporphyrin-based MOF photocatalysts under solid–gas reaction conditions. This study provides unique insight into enhancing the efficiency of the photoreduction of CO2 to CH4 by pure water.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis have been deemed as a versatile and colorful platform for exploring efficient transformation systems. Henceforth, the design of photocatalysts underpins a wide range of research interests. By virtue of synthetic versatility, stability, non-toxicity, purely organic properties, tunable semiconductive structures, and remarkable visible-light absorbance, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have emerged as an attractive new class of semiconductor materials that show great potential for tackling important energy and environmental challenges. Over the past decade, immense efforts have been devoted toward the construction of CMPs-based photocatalysts for versatile photocatalytic transformations. This review aims to summarize the latest representative advances in the field of carbazolic CMPs, focusing on various design strategies for the construction of tailor-made skeletons that have direct impact on their charge dynamics and thus photocatalytic performances, especially on their specific photocatalytic efficiency for organic transformations. Scrutinizing the photocatalytic features and elucidating the related design principles, it is fully described how structure modification of polycarbazoles could have an effect on optical properties, and thus on photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the bottlenecks that need to be addressed, and the future research directions of CMPs are identified in the area of photocatalysis.
Electron transfer and energy barrier co-modulation: Unravelling the role of sequential fluorination in high-rate CO2 photoreduction on conjugated organic polymers

Abstract:Water-assisted photoreduction of CO2 without using co-catalyst, photosensitizer or sacrificial reagent is similar to natural photosynthesis, thus offering a promising solution to CO2 emissions. In this work, conjugated organic polymers with un-, mono- and bi-fluorinated benzothiadiazole units are synthesized and studied for gas-solid mode CO2 photoreduction. Both the photoelectrical properties and photoreduction efficiency are markedly improved upon sequential fluorination. Theoretical calculations reveal that the sequential fluorination effectively reduces the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of *COOH formation, and promotes the desorption of CO. Benefiting from this, the CO2 photoreduction rates of the monofluorinated FBZTE and the bifluorinated DFBZTE are 1.93 and 3.34 times that of the unfluorinated BZTE, respectively. DFBZTE exhibits a record-high CO yield of 39.22 μmol∙g-1∙h-1 and nearly 100% selectivity, superior to similar materials reported in the same reaction system. This strategy provides a novel approach for design of more efficient polymer-based catalysts for photoreduction of CO2.

Abstract:The use of metal‐free catalysts to convert CO2 into valuable chemicals is very challenging. Here, we synthesized a conjugated organic polymer (TpTf‐1) featuring 2,4,6‐Triphenyl‐1,3,5‐Triazine as the acceptor unit, triphenylamine as the donor unit, and vinylidene bond as the linkage. The local structure of donor‐acceptor (D‐A) forms an intramolecular electric field that can promote the separation of photogenerated electrons and charges, meanwhile, the vinylidene bond can further change the charge distribution to promote exciton dissociation. Without the use of photosensitizers, the TpTf‐1 exhibits outstanding selectivity of CO of up to 91.96%, with a production rate of 45.2 μmol·g‐1·h‐1 at visible light, which is 3.4‐fold than TaTf‐1 with the same D‐A structure but linking in imine bond and is 2.8‐fold than TpTf‐2 linking in vinylidene bond but with a different donor unit. Moreover, TpTf‐1 has a CO production rate of up to 117.3 μmol·g‐1·h‐1 under full wavelength light irradiation.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly techniques of converting CO2 into high-value compounds and/or fuels. However, the performance of most current photocatalytic CO2 reduction catalysts is less than satisfactory for practical applications. Here, we synthesized a heterogeneous structure by integrating Cu2O and a porphyrin hydrogen-bonded organic framework (PFC-45), which was then fabricated into a thin-film catalyst on carbolic paper (CP) using a facile electrophoretic deposition technology. With improved electron-hole separation efficiency and visible-light-harvesting ability, this film (PFC-45/Cu2O@CP) significantly enhanced CO2-to-CO photoreduction, exceeding 2.4 and 3.2 times that of PFC-45@CP and PFC-45/Cu2O particles, respectively. Remarkably, PFC-45/Cu2O@CP also exhibited high selectivity (99%) and outstanding activity (11.81 μmol g-1 h-1) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction in pure water without any sacrificial agent. This work demonstrates a new strategy to design photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Covalent Organic Frameworks for Boosting H2O2 Photosynthesis via the Synergy of Multiple Charge Transfer Channels and Polarized Field

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) serve as one of the most promising candidates for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) photosynthesis, while attaining high-performance COFs remains a formidable challenge due to the insufficient separation of photogenerated charges. Here, through the rational design of bicarbazole-based COFs (Cz-COFs), we showcase the first achievement in piezo-photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2 using COFs. Noteworthily, the ethenyl group-modified Cz-COFs (COF-DH-Eth) demonstrates a record-high yield of H2O2 (9212 μmol g-1 h-1) from air and pure water through piezo-photocatalysis, which is ca. 2.5 times higher than that of pristine Cz-COFs without ethenyl groups (COF-DH-H) under identical condition and COF-DH-Eth without ultrasonic treatment. The H2O2 production rate originates from the synergistic effect between an ultrasonication-induced polarized electric field and the spatially separated multiple charge transfer channels, which significantly promote the utilization of photogenerated electrons by directional transfer from bicarbazole groups to the ethenyl group-modified benzene rings. Several Cz-COFs and bifluorenylidene-based COFs (COF-BFTB-H) with similar twisted monomers exhibit obvious piezoelectric performance for promoting H2O2 generation, signifying that organic ligands with a twistable structure play a crucial role in creating broken symmetry structures, thereby establishing piezoelectric properties in COFs.

Abstract:The photocatalytic generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from H2O and O2 under visible light irradiation is a hopeful approach to achieve solar-to-chemical energy transformation. While the lack of specific redox reaction centers is still the main reason for low photocatalytic H2O2 production efficiency, herein, we present a conjugated organic polymer (AQTEE-COP) containing anthraquinone redox centers by Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between 2,6-dibromoanthraquinone (AQ) and 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)ethene. The extended π-conjugated framework with an electron push–pull effect between electron-donating tetraphenylethene moieties and electron-withdrawing anthraquinone moieties not only broadened the visible light absorption range but also promoted the separation and migration of photo-induced charge carriers. Meanwhile, the anthraquinone moieties can serve as redox centers to accept photo-induced electrons and transfer them to adsorbed O2 molecules for subsequent H2O2 production. The well-defined structure of AQTEE-COP with task-specific anthracene redox centers provides molecular-level insights into the mechanistic understanding of the photocatalytic H2O2 generation from H2O and O2. The AQTEE-COP exhibits efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production with an initial rate of 3204 μmol g–1 h–1 under visible light (λ ≥ 400 nm) irradiation without any additional photosensitizers, organic scavengers, or co-catalysts. This article provides a protocol for the rational design of pre-functionalized conjugated organic polymer-based materials for solar-to-chemical energy transformation.

Abstract:Visible-light-driven photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, we report a donor-acceptor type conjugated porous polymer (ZnPor@Re) consisting of zinc porphyrin as the donor and rhenium complex as the acceptor as an ideal platform for visible-light-driven photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into CO. As expected, ZnPor@Re shows excellent photocatalytic activity for reduction of CO2 under white LED irradiation, achieving up to CO production of 66.2 mmol g(-1), selectivity of 99.8% and apparent quantum yield of 1.3% at 420 nm. Time-resolved photoluminescence decay experiment indicates that donor-acceptor structure within the skeleton of ZnPor@Re affords an oriented electron transfer channel of the excited electrons from zinc porphyrin donor to rhenium complex acceptor, thus facilitating separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carries. The current work highlights the great potential of amorphous conjugated porous polymer as photocatalyst for CO2 photoreduction.
Unblocked intramolecular charge transfer for enhanced CO2 photoreduction enabled by an imidazolium-based ionic conjugated microporous polymer

Abstract:Efficient solar energy-driven conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals is challenging. Here we design an imidazolium-based ionic conjugated microporous polymer (ImI-CMP), which unblocks readily intramolecular charge transfer and triggers CO2 photoreduction. Under visible light irradiation, ImI-CMP incorporated with Co (II) species exhibits a high CO production rate of 2953 μmol·g-1·h-1 and a turnover frequency of 30.8 h-1; these numbers are competitive to that of the best porous organic polymers. The mechanism studies reveal that two factors play key roles in the outstanding photocatalytic performance. First, the imidazolium motifs on the ImI-CMP enhance the activation of CO2. Second, π-conjugation structure and the built-in electric field allow ultrafast intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer in the ImI-CMP. This work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance organic photocatalysts for CO2 reduction by combining cationic imidazolium motifs and π-conjugation structures.

Unique Z-scheme carbonized polymer dots/Bi4O5Br2 hybrids for efficiently boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Constructing heterojunctions with matched band semiconductor is regarded as effective strategy to promote high-efficiency photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, 0D/2D direct Z-scheme heterojunction involving carbonized polymer dots and Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets (CPDs/Bi4O5Br2) is designed and fabricated, which effectively facilitate migration and separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and retain more negative electron reduction potential of CPDs and more positive hole oxidation potential of Bi4O5Br2. Moreover, CPDs promote adsorption of CO2 and intermediate COOH* as well as desorption of product CO. The direct Z-scheme mechanism of CPDs/Bi4O5Br2 is collaboratively confirmed by theory calculation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The 8 wt% CPDs/Bi4O5Br2 exhibits the maximal CO production of 132.42 μmol h−1g−1 under Xe lamp irradiation, 5.43 fold higher than that of Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets. The CPDs with up-conversion properties can broaden light utilization range, so that composite material also show better CO2 conversion performance when excitation wavelength is greater than 580 nm.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of organic photocatalysts remain a great challenge due to their strict structural constraints. However, this could be mitigated by achieving structural flexibility by constructing permanent porosity into the materials. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are an emerging class of porous materials with an amorphous, three-dimensional network structure, which makes it possible to integrate the elaborate functional groups to enhance photocatalytic performance. Here, we report the synthesis of a novel CMP, named TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP, constructed by 1,1′3,3′-tetra(4-aminophenyl)ferrocene (TAPFc) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) monomers. The integration of the p-type dopant 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) into the TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP improved the light adsorption performance, leading to a decrease in the optical bandgap from 2.00 to 1.43 eV. The doped CMP (TCNQ@TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP) exhibited promising catalytic activity in photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light, yielding 546.8 μmol g−1 h−1 of CO with a selectivity of 96% and 5.2 μmol g−1 h−1 of CH4. This represented an 80% increase in the CO yield compared to the maternal TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP. The steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime (FL) measurements reveal faster carrier separation and transport after the doping. This study provides guidance for the development of organic photocatalysts for the utilization of renewable energy.

Abstract:The visible-light-driven photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is currently an emerging approach for transforming solar energy into chemical energy. In general, the photocatalytic process for producing H2O2 includes two pathways: the water oxidation reaction (WOR) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the utilization efficiency of ORR surpasses that of WOR, leading to a discrepancy with the low oxygen levels in natural water and thereby impeding their practical application. Herein, we report a novel donor–bridge–acceptor (D-B-A) organic polymer conjugated by the Sonogashira–Hagihara coupling reaction with tetraphenylethene (TPE) units as the electron donors, acetylene (A) as the connectors and pyrene (P) moieties as the electron acceptors. Notably, the resulting TPE-A-P exhibits a remarkable solar-to-chemical conversion of 1.65% and a high BET-specific surface area (1132 m2·g−1). Furthermore, even under anaerobic conditions, it demonstrates an impressive H2O2 photosynthetic efficiency of 1770 μmol g−1 h−1, exceeding the vast majority of previously reported photosynthetic systems of H2O2. The outstanding performance is attributed to the effective separation of electrons and holes, along with the presence of sufficient reaction sites facilitated by the incorporation of alkynyl electronic bridges. This protocol presents a successful method for generating H2O2 via a water oxidation reaction, signifying a significant advancement towards practical applications in the natural environment.
