Abstract:Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a crucial transcription factor that regulates the basal and inducible expression of many antioxidant-relevant genes, and the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant pathway has been regarded as a critical switch in the initiation of cellular defence systems against oxidative damages. In this study, Nrf2 was first identified and characterized in the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus). A. davidianus was exposed to a high ambient temperature of 30 °C for various periods of time (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h). We investigated the effects of heat stress on alterations of the hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, the activities of lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), the histology of the liver, and the mRNA expression patterns of 11 genes involved in the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant pathway in A. davidianus. The results showed that both the hepatic LDH activity and MDA content significantly increased after heat exposure, indicating that heat stress could induce cell injury and oxidative damage. Histological analysis of the liver showed that heat stress caused hepatocyte abnormalities, fat accumulation and ultrastructural alterations of the hepatocytes, endoplasmic reticulum and nuclei. The expression patterns of genes involved in the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant pathway in the liver were distinct when A. davidianus was exposed to heat stress. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first on the characterization of Nrf2 in A. davidianus and even in amphibians. The results indicated that heat stress could induce oxidative damage, and the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway might play a critical role in the resistance against heat stress in A. davidianus. These findings will deepen and enrich the current knowledge on the evolutionary conserved antioxidant roles and mechanisms of Nrf2 in A. davidianus, or even in amphibians, in the antioxidant defence against heat stress.

Abstract:Ambient temperature-associated stress can affect normal physiological functions in ectotherms. To assess the effects of cold or heat stress on amphibians, giant spiny frogs (Quasipaa spinosa) were acclimated at 22 degrees C followed by exposure to 5 degrees C or 30 degrees C for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively. Histological alterations, apoptotic index, generation of mitochondria! reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant activity indices and stress-response gene expression in frog livers were subsequently determined. Results showed that many fat droplets appeared after 12 h of heat stress and the percentage of melanomacrophage centres significantly changed after 48 h at both stress conditions. Furthermore, the mitochondrial ROS levels were elevated in a time-dependent manner up to 6 h and 12 h in the cold and heat stress groups, respectively. The activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase were successively increased with increasing periods of cold or heat exposure, and their gene expression levels showed similar changes in both stress conditions. Most tested heat shock protein (HSP) genes were sensitive to temperature exposure, and the expression profiles of most apoptosis-related genes was significantly upregulated at 3 and 48 h under cold and heat stress, respectively. Apoptotic index at 48 h under cold stress was significantly higher than that under heat stress. Notably, lipid droplets, HSP30, HSP70 and HSP110 might be suitable bioindicators of heat stress. The results of these alterations at physiological, biochemical and molecular levels might contribute to a better understanding of the stress response of Q. spinosa, and perhaps amphibians more generally, under thermal stress.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate whether different salinity stresses (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 ppt NaCl) affect the histoarchitecture, serum biochemical indices, antioxidant responses, and transcriptome analysis of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that the degree of damage to the nuclei and mitochondria in the hepatopancreas increased with increasing salinity. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the degree of gill wrinkles was enhanced under salinity stress. Serum biochemical indices demonstrated that the cholesterol significantly decreased while the triglyceride, aspartate transaminase, and alanine transaminase contents significantly increased with increasing salinity. The antioxidant parameters, including catalase, total antioxidant capacity, and glutathione peroxidase, significantly decreased, while the malondialdehyde content significantly increased under salinity stress. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the expression pattern of immune-related genes showed a downward trend. These findings enrich our knowledge about the salinity stress response of farmed organisms and provide a theoretical base for salinity domestication and saline soil cultivation of P. clarkii, which might contribute to income improvement, employment generation, food security, and environmental safety.
Latitude-Induced and Behaviorally Thermoregulated Variations in Upper Thermal Tolerance of Two Anuran Species

Abstract:Although thermal tolerance along geographical gradients gives an insight into species' response to climate change, current studies on thermal tolerance are strongly skewed towards global-scale patterns. As a result, intraspecific variations are often assumed to be constant, despite a lack of evidence. To understand population-specific responses to thermal stress, we investigated the presence of intraspecific variations in the critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of tadpoles in two anuran species, Rana uenoi and Bufo sachalinensis. The study was conducted across a five-degree latitudinal gradient in the Republic of Korea. We exposed the tadpoles to increasing temperatures and recorded the CTmax for 270 R. uenoi individuals from 11 sites, collected in rice paddies, and for 240 B. sachalinensis individuals from ten sites, collected in reservoirs. We also recorded the swimming performance and behavior of the tadpoles when placed in an experimental apparatus during CTmax measurements. We then used linear regressions to determine the relationship between abiotic factors and CTmax. In R. uenoi, we found a positive relationship between latitude and CTmax, but the tadpoles did not display specific thermoregulatory behaviors. In B. sachalinensis, none of the abiotic factors such as climate and geographic coordinates were related to CTmax, but we detected a tendency to swim close to the water surface when water temperature was increasing. For R. uenoi, we tentatively relate the CTmax variability across the latitudinal gradient to a physiological adaptive response associated with habitat characteristics that are assumed to be fluctuating, as the species inhabits small water bodies prone to drying out. In the case of B. sachalinensis, the behavior observed may be linked to oxygen depletion and thermoregulation, as it may buffer temperature changes in the absence of physiological adjustment. These findings suggest that intra-specific variations in CTmax are greater than generally accounted for, and thermal conditions of natural environments are important for understanding thermal tolerance in ectothermic species. Our results highlight that species' specific responses to climate warmings need to be studied to better protect species against climate change.

Variable temperature regimes and wetland salinity reduce performance of juvenile wood frogs

Abstract:On a changing planet, amphibians must respond to weather events shifting in frequency and magnitude, and to how those temperature and precipitation changes interact with other anthropogenic disturbances that modify amphibian habitat. To understand how drastic changes in environmental conditions affect wood frog tadpoles, we tested five temperature manipulations, including Ambient (water temperatures tracking daily air temperatures), Elevated (+ 3 °C above ambient), Nightly (removal of nightly lows), Spike (+ 6 °C above ambient every third week), and Flux (alternating ambient and + 3 °C weekly) crossed with Low Salt (specific conductivity: 109–207 μS-cm) and High Salt (1900–2000 μS-cm). We replicated each of the ten resulting treatments four times. High-salinity conditions produced larger metamorphs than low-salinity conditions. Tadpole survival was reduced only by the Spike treatment ( P = 0.017). Elevated temperatures did not shorten larval periods; time to metamorphosis did not differ among temperature treatments ( P = 0.328). We retained 135 recently metamorphosed frogs in outdoor terrestrial enclosures for 10 months to investigate larval environment carryover effects. Juvenile frogs grew larger in low-density terrestrial enclosures than high density ( P = 0.015) and frogs from Ambient Low Salt larval conditions grew and survived better than frogs from manipulated larval conditions. Frogs from High Salt larval conditions had lower survival than frogs from Low Salt conditions. Our results suggest that anthropogenic disturbances to larval environmental conditions can affect both larval and post-metamorphic individuals, with detrimental carryover effects of high-salinity larval conditions not emerging until the juvenile life stage.

Abstract:Global warming may affect the early developmental stages of high-altitude amphibians, thereby influencing their later fitness. Yet, this has been largely unexplored. To investigate whether and how the temperatures experienced by embryonic and larval stages affect their fitness at later developmental stages, we designed two experiments in which the embryos and larvae were treated with three temperatures (24, 18 and 12 °C), respectively. Then, the life history traits of the tadpoles during the metamorphotic climax in all treatments were evaluated, including growth rate, survival rate, morphology, thermal physiology, swimming performance, standard metabolic rate (SMR), oxidative and antioxidative system, and metabolic enzyme activities. The results revealed that elevated temperature accelerated metamorphosis but decreased body size at metamorphosis. Additionally, warming during the embryonic and larval stages decreased the thermal tolerance range and induced increased oxidative stress. Furthermore, high embryonic temperature significantly decreased the hatching success, but had no significant effect on swimming performance and SMR. Warming during larval periods was harmful to the survival and swimming performance of tadpoles. The effect size analysis revealed that the negative impacts of embryonic temperature on certain physiological traits, such as growth and development, survival and swimming performance, were more pronounced than those of larval temperature. Our results highlight the necessity for particular attention to be paid to the early stages of amphibians, notably the embryonic stages when evaluating the impact of global warming on their survival.

Abstract:When chronic exposure to ammonium and artificial heating were applied to tadpoles, tadpoles in heated water were larger, metamorphosed earlier, and as smaller metamorphs. Heated water produced faster larvae but metamorphs reared in nonheated water jumped farther. Ammonium caused increased mortality. Amphibian populations are undergoing a major recession worldwide, likely triggered by global change components such as the global warming and pollutants, among which agrochemicals, in general, and fertilizers, in particular, play a central role given their relevance in agriculture. Potential synergies among these stressors could maximize their individual effects. In this work, we investigated the consequences of a controlled chronic exposure to increased temperature and a sublethal dose of ammonium during the larval stage of Pelophylax perezi frogs on the growth, development, and locomotor performance of tadpoles and the metamorphs they gave rise to. To that end, tadpoles were reared either in heated or nonheated tanks, with or without ammonium added. The parents of these tadpoles came from either a pine grove or an agrosystem. Survival was reduced in agrosystem tadpoles reared with ammonium. Increased temperature potentiated tadpole growth while giving way to smaller metamorphs. Faster growth could be a consequence of increased metabolism, whereas the smaller size could follow an accelerated development and metamorphosis, which reduced the growth period. Also, swimming speed was greater in tadpoles reared in heated tanks, while jumping distance was greater in metamorphs reared in nonheated tanks. The effects of temperature were more marked in agrosystem than in pine grove individuals, which could mirror reduced adaptability. Thus, the ability to withstand the effects of these stressors was lower in agrosystem tadpoles.

Influence of salinity on the thermal tolerance of aquatic organisms

Abstract:Aquatic organisms are challenged by changes in the external environment, such as temperature and salinity fluctuations. The response of an organism to temperature changes can be modified by salinity, thus pointing at the potential interaction of both variables. In the present study, we tested this assumption for freshwater, brackish, and marine organisms, including algae, macrophytes, heterotrophic protists, parasites, invertebrates, and fish. We reviewed the existing body of literature on potential interactions between temperature and salinity and performed a meta-analysis that compared the thermal tolerance (characterized by the temperature optima, lower and upper temperature limits, and thermal breadths). The final database includes 90 relevant publications (algae: 15; heterotrophic protists: 1; invertebrates: 43; and fish: 31). Relevant publications for microphytes and parasites were not available. Overall, our results show that decreasing salinity significantly increased the lower temperature limits and decreased the upper temperature limits irrespective of the organism groups. These findings mainly reflect the response to salinity changes in brackish and marine systems that dominate our database. Although the number of studies on freshwater species was limited, they showed negative, although statistically nonsignificant, effects of an increased salinity on the thermal tolerance of these species (i.e. increased lower limits and decreased upper limits). In addition, our meta-analysis shows nonsignificant differences in the responsiveness of thermal tolerance to salinity changes among different groups of organisms, but the sensitivity of thermal tolerance to salinity changes generally followed the order: algae > invertebrates > fish. Facing the impact of climate change, our findings point at adverse effects of salinity changes on the temperature tolerance of aquatic organisms. Further studies that investigate the thermal performance of freshwater species at various salinity gradients are required to broaden the evidence for interactions between salinity and temperature tolerance. This also applies to the influence of parasitic infections, which have been found to modulate the temperature tolerance of aquatic invertebrates and fish.

Abstract:The proportion of wood frogs alive across nine populations when exposed to a lethal concentration of NaCl. The increasing salinization of freshwaters is a growing environmental issue as a result of mining, agriculture, climate change, and the application of de‐icing salts in regions that experience ice and snow. Due to narrow osmotic limits, many freshwater species are particularly susceptible to salinization, but it is possible that repeated exposures over time could favor the evolution of increased salt tolerance. Using collected nine populations of larval wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) as eggs from ponds and wetlands with close proximity to roads and spanning a wide gradient of salt concentrations. In the first experiment, we used a time‐to‐death experiment to examine the salt tolerance. In a second experiment, we examined whether population differences in salt tolerance were associated with trade‐offs in growth, development, or behavior in the presence of control water or a sublethal salt concentration. We found that populations collected from ponds with low and intermediate salt concentrations exhibited similar tolerance curves over a 96‐h exposure. However, the population from a pond with the highest salt concentration exhibited a much higher tolerance. We also found population differences in growth, development, and activity level among the populations, but these were not associated with population differences in tolerance. In addition, the sublethal concentration of salt had no impact on growth and development, but it did cause a reduction in tadpole activity across the populations. Collectively, these results provide further evidence that some species of freshwater organisms can evolve tolerance to increasing salinization, although it may only occur under relatively high concentrations and without trade‐offs in growth, development, or behavior.

Abstract:Human impacts on wild populations are numerous and extensive, degrading habitats and causing population declines across taxa. Though these impacts are often studied individually, wild populations typically face suites of stressors acting concomitantly, compromising the fitness of individuals and populations in ways poorly understood and not easily predicted by the effects of any single stressor. Developing understanding of the effects of multiple stressors and their potential interactions remains a critical challenge in environmental biology. Here, we focus on assessing the impacts of two prominent stressors associated with anthropogenic activities that affect many organisms across the planet – elevated salinity (e.g., from road de-icing salt) and temperature (e.g. from climate change). We examined a suite of physiological traits and components of fitness across populations of wood frogs originating from ponds that differ in their proximity to roads and thus their legacy of exposure to pollution from road salt. When experimentally exposed to road salt, wood frogs showed reduced survival (especially those from ponds adjacent to roads), divergent developmental rates, and reduced longevity. Family-level effects mediated these outcomes, but high salinity generally eroded family-level variance. When combined, exposure to both temperature and salt resulted in very low survival, and this effect was strongest in roadside populations. Taken together, these results suggest that temperature is an important stressor capable of exacerbating impacts from a prominent contaminant confronting many freshwater organisms in salinized habitats. More broadly, it appears likely that toxicity might often be underestimated in the absence of multi-stressor approaches.

Abstract:Amphibians and freshwater fishes are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to the limited thermal buffer of freshwater systems and their constrained habitat dispersal capabilities. Therefore, understanding their physiological sensitivity across life stages is paramount for predicting climate change impacts in freshwater systems. Our systematic review and quantitative synthesis revealed consistent global patterns in upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) and acclimation capacity. Phylogeny, methodology, climatic origin, and life stage emerged as significant determinants. We address methodological concerns and propose research strategies to improve our ability to predict species' climate vulnerability, thereby promoting better‐informed conservation efforts. Amphibians and fishes play a central role in shaping the structure and function of freshwater environments. These organisms have a limited capacity to disperse across different habitats and the thermal buffer offered by freshwater systems is small. Understanding determinants and patterns of their physiological sensitivity across life history is, therefore, imperative to predicting the impacts of climate change in freshwater systems. Based on a systematic literature review including 345 experiments with 998 estimates on 96 amphibian (Anura/Caudata) and 93 freshwater fish species (Teleostei), we conducted a quantitative synthesis to explore phylogenetic, ontogenetic, and biogeographic (thermal adaptation) patterns in upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) and thermal acclimation capacity (acclimation response ratio, ARR) as well as the influence of the methodology used to assess these thermal traits using a conditional inference tree analysis. We found globally consistent patterns in CTmax and ARR, with phylogeny (taxa/order), experimental methodology, climatic origin, and life stage as significant determinants of thermal traits. The analysis demonstrated that CTmax does not primarily depend on the climatic origin but on experimental acclimation temperature and duration, and life stage. Higher acclimation temperatures and longer acclimation times led to higher CTmax values, whereby Anuran larvae revealed a higher CTmax than older life stages. The ARR of freshwater fishes was more than twice that of amphibians. Differences in ARR between life stages were not significant. In addition to phylogenetic differences, we found that ARR also depended on acclimation duration, ramping rate, and adaptation to local temperature variability. However, the amount of data on early life stages is too small, methodologically inconsistent, and phylogenetically unbalanced to identify potential life cycle bottlenecks in thermal traits. We, therefore, propose methods to improve the robustness and comparability of CTmax/ARR data across species and life stages, which is crucial for the conservation of freshwater biodiversity under climate change.

Abstract:The intensive use of agrochemicals and the rapid increase of global temperatures have modified the thermal conditions of aquatic environments, thus increasing amphibians' vulnerability to global warming and positioning them at great risk. Commercial formulations of chlorpyrifos (COM) are the pesticides most widely used in agricultural activities, with a high toxic potential on amphibians. However, little is known about the separate effects of the active ingredient (CPF) and adjuvants (AD). We studied the thermal sensitivity at different concentrations and pesticide fractions in Rhinella arenarum tadpoles, on thermal tolerance limits (CT max = Critical thermal maximum and CT min = Critical thermal minimum), swimming speed (S s ), optimum temperature (T op ), and thermal breadth 50 (B 50 ). Our results demonstrate that the pesticide active ingredient, the adjuvants, and the commercial formulation of chlorpyrifos differentially impair the thermal sensitivity of R. arenarum tadpoles. The pesticide fractions affected the heat and the cold tolerance (CT max and CT min ), depending on the concentrations they were exposed to. The locomotor performance (S s , T op , and B 50 ) of tadpoles also varied among fractions, treatments, and environmental temperatures. In the context of climate change, the outcomes presented are particularly relevant, as mean temperatures are increasing at unprecedented rates, which suggests that tadpoles inhabiting warming and polluted ponds are currently experiencing deleterious conditions. Considering that larval stages of amphibians are the most susceptible to changing environmental conditions and the alarming predictions about environmental temperatures in the future, it is likely that the synergism between high temperatures and pesticide exposure raise the threat of population deletions in the coming years.

The probability of occurrence of such events is largely unknown but the associated risks could be large enough to influence global climate policy. Amphibians are indicators of ecosystems’ health and particularly sensitive to novel climate conditions. Using state-of-the-art climate model simulations, we present a global assessment of the effects of unabated global warming and a collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) on the distribution of 2509 amphibian species across six biogeographical realms and extinction risk categories. Global warming impacts are severe and strongly enhanced by additional and substantial AMOC weakening, showing tipping point behavior for many amphibian species. Further declines in climatically suitable areas are projected across multiple clades, and biogeographical regions. Species loss in regional assemblages is extensive across regions, with Neotropical, Nearctic and Palearctic regions being most affected. Results underline the need to expand existing knowledge about the consequences of climate catastrophes on human and natural systems to properly assess the risks of unabated warming and the benefits of active mitigation strategies.

Abstract:The chromonic liquid-crystalline properties of bis-(N,N-diethylaminoethyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide dihydrochloride in an aqueous solution were investigated by polarized light microscopy and 2H NMR spectroscopy. Both techniques indicate a narrow I + N biphasic region and a broad N phase region at concentrations ranging from approximately 6.9 to approximately 30 wt % at room temperature. Optical microscopy indicates that a hexagonal M phase exists at higher concentrations. The variation of the I --> N + I and N + I --> N transition temperatures with concentration was studied by 2H NMR spectroscopy. Finally, the effects of temperature and concentration on the order parameter of the N phase were investigated by 2H NMR using a tetra-deuterated derivative. A value of 0.97 was obtained for the N phase at its upper concentration limit.

Abstract:Salinization is a global phenomenon affecting ecosystems and forcing freshwater organisms to deal with increasing levels of ionic stress. However, our understanding of mechanisms that permit salt tolerance in amphibians is limited. This study investigates mechanisms of salt tolerance in locally adapted, coastal populations of a treefrog, Hyla cinerea. Using a common garden experiment, we (i) determine the extent that environment (i.e., embryonic and larval saltwater exposure) or genotype (i.e., coastal vs. inland) affects developmental benchmarks and transcriptome expression and (ii) identify genes that may underpin differences in saltwater tolerance. Differences in gene expression, survival, and plasma osmolality were most strongly associated with genotype. Population genetic analyses on expressed genes also delineated coastal and inland groups based on genetic similarity. Coastal populations differentially expressed osmoregulatory genes including ion transporters (atp1b1, atp6V1g2, slc26a), cellular adhesion components (cdh26, cldn1, gjb3, ocln), and cytoskeletal components (odc1‐a, tgm3). Several of these genes are the same genes expressed by euryhaline fish after exposure to freshwater, which is a novel finding for North American amphibians and suggests that these genes may be associated with local salinity adaptation. Coastal populations also highly expressed glycerol‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase 1 (gpd1), which indicates they use glycerol as a compatible osmolyte to reduce water loss—another mechanism of saltwater tolerance previously unknown in frogs These data signify that Hyla cinerea inhabiting coastal, brackish wetlands have evolved a salt‐tolerant ecotype, and highlights novel candidate pathways that can lead to salt tolerance in freshwater organisms facing habitat salinization.

Abstract:The major objective of this study is to understand the upper thermal limits and potential impact of temperature elevation on copepods caused by coastal power plants. Laboratory experiments were designed to evaluate the upper incipient lethal temperature (UILT) and critical thermal maximum (CTMax) of eight coastal copepod species collected from a subtropical bay in spring and summer. The 48h-UILT of copepods acclimatized at 16.0, 20.0. 28.0 degrees C were 26.4-29.1, 27.3-30.1, 32.9-36.9 degrees C, respectively. And the CTMax of copepods acclimatized at 28.0 degrees C was 35.80-41.03 degrees C. The UILT of copepods increased significantly with rising acclimatization temperatures. but the difference values between UILT and acclimatization temperatures decreased, which indicated that the seawater temperature elevation induced the growing mortalities of copepods with increasing natural seawater temperatures from the thermal addition of power plants. The results also showed that estuarine copepods had more tolerances to the thermal stress than those from other more stable marine environments. As to the calanoid copepod species, there was a significant negative correlation between the CTMax and body length (p<0.01). So it seemed that the copepod species with large body size were more sensitive to the thermal addition than the smaller ones. Thus, owing to the temperature increase, the copepod species diversity might reduce and the composition of copepod communities might tend to be small-sized in natural sea areas close to the coastal power plants. Living in a multi-stressor world: nitrate pollution and thermal stress interact to affect amphibian larvae

Abstract:The interaction of widespread stressors such as nitrate pollution and increasing temperatures associated with climate change are likely to affect aquatic ectotherms such as amphibians. The metamorphic and physiological traits of amphibian larvae during the critical onset of metamorphosis are particularly susceptible to these stressors. We conducted a common-garden experiment using larvae subjected to four constant acclimation temperatures (18, 22, 26, 28 °C) crossed with three environmentally relevant nitrate concentrations (0, 50, 100 mg × L ) to investigate the interactive and individual effects of these stressors on metamorphic (i.e., growth and development) and physiological traits (i.e., metabolism and heat tolerance) at the onset of metamorphosis. Larvae exposed to elevated nitrate concentrations and thermal stress displayed increased metabolic rates but decreased developmental rate, highlighting interactive effects of these stressors. However, nitrate pollution alone had no effect on either metamorphic or physiological traits, suggesting that detoxification processes were sufficient to maintain homeostasis but not in combination with increased acclimation temperatures. Furthermore, larvae exposed to nitrate displayed diminished abilities to exhibit temperature-induced plasticity in metamorphosis timing and heat tolerance, as well as reduced acclimation capacity in metabolic rate and heat tolerance to higher temperatures. These results highlight the importance of considering the exposure to multiple stressors when investigating how natural populations respond to global change.

Abstract:Climate change is believed to be causing declines of ectothermic vertebrates, but there is little evidence that climatic conditions associated with declines have exceeded critical (i.e., acutely lethal) maxima or minima, and most relevant studies are correlative, anecdotal, or short-term (hours). We conducted an 11-week factorial experiment to examine the effects of temperature (22 °C or 27 °C), moisture (wet or dry), and atrazine (an herbicide; 0, 4, 40, 400 μg/L exposure as embryos and larvae) on the survival, growth, behavior, and foraging rates of postmetamorphic streamside salamanders (Ambystoma barbouri), a species of conservation concern. The tested climatic conditions were between the critical maxima and minima of streamside salamanders; thus, this experiment quantified the long-term effects of climate change within the noncritical range of this species. Despite a suite of behavioral adaptations to warm and dry conditions (e.g., burrowing, refuge use, huddling with conspecifics, and a reduction in activity), streamside salamanders exhibited significant loss of mass and significant mortality in all but the cool and moist conditions, which were closest to the climatic conditions in which they are most active in nature. A temperature of 27 °C represented a greater mortality risk than dry conditions; death occurred rapidly at this temperature and more gradually under cool and dry conditions. Foraging decreased under dry conditions, which suggests there were opportunity costs to water conservation. Exposure to the herbicide atrazine additively decreased water-conserving behaviors, foraging efficiency, mass, and time to death. Hence, the hypothesis that moderate climate change can cause population declines is even more plausible under scenarios with multiple stressors. These results suggest that climate change within the noncritical range of species and pollution may reduce individual performance by altering metabolic demands, hydration, and foraging effort and may facilitate population declines of amphibians and perhaps other ectothermic vertebrates.
