Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) offers a route for trace detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) owing to its great enhancement near the surface of the substrate. However, most of the methods are inconvenient due to the long reaction time and the strict measurement conditions. Based on a reaction between silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and mercury ions, a simple but effective method is proposed in this paper. In the experimental research, a tapered optical fiber (TOF) modified with AgNPs is employed as a sensing probe and Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is taken as the Raman reporter. The SERS substrate is consumed by the Hg2+, causing a spectrum decrease. In the Hg2+ concentration range of 10-12 M to 10-4 M, the spectra evolution is detected using a mobile Raman spectrometer. By analyzing the decrease of the Raman peak after a 5-minutes interval, the concentration of Hg2+ can be quantified. A limit of detection of 5.15 x 10-13 M is achieved, which is much below the maximum Hg2+ content of drinkable water specified by USEPA (10-8 M). Verification tests were performed with the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the results showed that the proposed SERS method is effective for real samples detection. In addition, the reproductivity and the selectivity are experimentally confirmed. With this reliable, rapid, ultrasensitive and accurate method, trace Hg2+ could be detected in many applications.

Abstract:The wide application of an organophosphate pesticide triazophos raises concern on the environmental pollution and the potential risk to human health. Thus, it is crucial to regularly monitor triazophos residue in the environment and agro-products. Herein we described a non-competitive immunoassay for trace detection of triazophos using a direct surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor. Two anti-triazophos monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were immobilized on the sensor chip and characterized by SPR-based kinetic analysis. The mAb with relatively slow dissociation rate was used for direct immunosensing of triazophos. The biosensor assay showed a high specificity and a low detection limit of 0.096ngmL−1 to triazophos, with the linear detection range of 0.98–8.29ngmL−1. Under the optimal condition, the sensor chip could be regenerated for 160cycles at least. Moreover, the sensitive method was applied to determine triazophos in the spiked environmental water and agricultural products, as well as in unknown real-life samples (including Chinese cabbage, cucumber, and apple). Desirable results demonstrated that the newly-developed immunosensor could be used as a rapid, convenient, and reliable tool to regularly monitor triazophos and meet the detection requirement of its maximum residue limits.

Abstract:In recent years, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been widely used in various fields for the rapid detection of trace-level molecular targets. In this study, we have developed a simple and effective solution-based SERS protocol to improve the activity for the detection of cationic dye molecules in aquaculture. The polystyrene sulfonate functionalized gold nanobipyramids (PSS–Au BPs) were synthesized from the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) reaction system followed by the ligand exchange process. The halide ions-induced aggregation of PSS-Au BPs was carried out by using four type of different salts such as NaCl, NaBr, MgCl2 and MgSO4 to investigate their influence on the SERS activity. The results demonstrate that the ionic strength of the solution has an important impact on the colloidal stability and SERS activity. The PSS-Au BPs show an improved SERS sensitivity at lower concentrations of the aggregating agents in solution-based SERS by detecting the crystal violet (CV) molecules with a limit of detection (LOD) to 3.28 × 10−11 M. Furthermore, to demonstrate the generality of our proposed strategy, trace amounts of three more dyes such as malachite green (MG), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine 6G (R-6G), as well as other molecules such as thiram and bisphenol-S were also detected. This protocol not only provides a method for rapid on-site detection of trace-level molecules but can also be applied to other SERS-based analysis.

Abstract:Rapid and accurate detection of phosphate (Pi) in complex biological fluid is of critical importance for timely warning of Pi accumulation and monitoring Pi related pathological process. Up to date, various luminescent probes have been developed for Pi determination in aqueous media. However, the huge obstacles of the current probes suffer from the inherent issues such as time-consuming, tedious preparation and unavoidable background interference during Pi detection. To circumvent this limitation, we proposed a universal and facile strategy to fabricate a novel sensitizer-Ln3+@surfactant micelle probes with time-resolved luminescent (TRL) superiority through the self-assembly of sensitizer, Ln3+ and surfactant. Through this design, the sensitizer-Ln3+ chelate can be encapsulated into the surfactant constructed micelle and Ln3+ luminescence can be substantially lighted up through the effective energy transfer from the coordinated sensitizer and the assistance of Triton X-100. Such high TRL signal can be sensitively and specifically quenched by Pi, which was attributed to the specific coordination competition between sensitizer and Pi towards Ln3+. Benefitting from the background-free interference and highly sensitive TRL response of the sensitizer-Ln3+@surfactant probe, we achieved the rapid, selective and sensitive detection of Pi in the range of 0.5–120 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.19 μM. Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed method based on the Ln3+ involved micelle probes was further verified through the quantitation of Pi in real biological samples.

Abstract:A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method for measuring nitrate nitrogen in aquaculture water was developed using a substrate of β-cyclodextrin-modified gold nanoparticles (SH-β-CD@AuNPs). Addressing the issues of low sensitivity, narrow linear range, and relatively poor selectivity of single metal nanoparticles in the SERS detection of nitrate nitrogen, we combined metal nanoparticles with cyclodextrin supramolecular compounds to prepare a AuNPs substrate enveloped by cyclodextrin, which exhibits ultra-high selectivity and Raman activity. Subsequently, vanadium(III) chloride was used to convert nitrate ions into nitrite ions. The adsorption mechanism between the reaction product benzotriazole (BTAH) of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and nitrite ions on the SH-β-CD@AuNPs substrate was studied through SERS, achieving the simultaneous detection of nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen. The experimental results show that BTAH exhibits distinct SERS characteristic peaks at 1168, 1240, 1375, and 1600 cm−1, with the lowest detection limits of 3.33 × 10−2, 5.84 × 10−2, 2.40 × 10−2, and 1.05 × 10−2 μmol/L, respectively, and a linear range of 0.1–30.0 μmol/L. The proposed method provides an effective tool for the selective and accurate online detection of nitrite and nitrate nitrogen in aquaculture water.

An Integrated, Full-Range Surge Control/Rotating Stall Avoidance Compressor Control System

Abstract:In this paper we present an integrated compressor control scheme capable of achieving simultaneous surge control and rotating stall avoidance over the full range of compressor operation. The approach adopted in this paper is based on a combination of closed-loop feedback control and open-loop feedforward control of throttle valve area. The feedback control is based on a compressor mass fiow measurment. The feedforward control is based on measuremets of inlet and outlet pressure and temperature. Both the feedback and feedforward controller parameters are continuously scheduled as a function of nominal operating conditions. This approach achieves simultaneous surge control and rotating stall avoidance, over the full range of compressor operation, in the face of i) inlet and outlet pressure and temperature disturbances, and ii) variations in the demanded values of both compressor speed and mass flow. Alternative approaches involving plenum pressure feedback, widely reported in literature, are shown to posess inherent performance limitations not possessed by the mass flow feedback scheme presented here.

Abstract:The solution-based SERS detection has been considered as one of the most mature commercial SERS detection protocols owing to its features of high sensitivity and timeliness. However, poor molecular generality is a challenge for weakly-adsorbed species, such as anionic molecules and complicated organic compositions, on the surfaces of the plasmonic nanostructures. Many molecules in solution especially the weakly-adsorbed organic pollutants cannot be effectively adsorbed onto the surface of metal nanoparticles quickly due to the low affinities towards the metal, hence showing the weak Raman activity. Herein, we report a solution-based SERS sensing protocol via the highly efficient molecule enrichment strategy to achieve highly sensitive detection in solution. With the help of pH adjustment in solution, the porous β-cyclodextrin polymer/magnetic nanoparticles (PCDP-MNs) can availably capture various types of molecules, including cationic dyes (e.g., methylene blue and crystal violet), anionic pigment (e.g., sunset yellow), and neutral organic pollutants (e.g., carbendazim and bisphenol A). Based on the molecule enrichment strategy, the enrichment factors of various molecules are up to 102–103, thus their Raman signals are enhanced by 2–3 orders of magnitude. The molecule enrichment strategy provides a new way for the practical SERS detection to improve the ultra-trace detection in solution.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a convenient and fast technique to detect toxic heavy metals such as lead ions (Pb 2+ ). In this study, a silver nanoparticle-decorated hydrogel substrate by a one-pot method is prepared, addressing the instability of traditional sol substrates and the non-tunability of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of solid substrates, which can achieve in-situ detection of Pb 2+ in real systems using a portable Raman spectrometer. Meanwhile, the characteristic SERS peaks attributed to the ternary complex of 4-MBA/H 2 PO 4 - /Pb 2+ formed by the dihydrogen phosphate, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, and Pb 2+ are used firstly for Pb 2+ detection to our knowledge, decreasing the cost of the classical strategy. The method is highly anti-interference, simple, and cost-effective, which exhibits a good linear correlation (y= 21.6x + 2711, R 2 =0.993) in the range of 3-500 μg/L with a detection limit of 1.6 μg/L that is one order of magnitude lower than that of the EPA regulations. This method is expected to realize the rapid and accurate on-site SERS detection of Pb 2+ by the new strategy.

Abstract:Fast, simple, and low-cost on-site visualized detection of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is in great demand since phosphate is the major reason of eutrophication. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent probe composed by green carbon dots (GCDs) and red carbon dots (RCDs) has been established for high-sensitivity and selective sensing of Pi. A trend of color change from red to green is observed for the detection of Pi under ultraviolet light and the detection limit is 0.09 μM in the range of 0 to 55 μM. Fluorescent test paper prepared from the probe solution was successfully applied to semi-quantitative visual detection of Pi in real-world water and soil samples, which shows great real-world application potentials.Graphical abstract
A Simple Aptamer SERS Sensor Based on Mesoporous Silica for the Detection of Chlorpyrifos

Abstract:Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphorus insecticide, which can be used to control a variety of chewing and piercing mouthparts pests in agricultural production. It can destroy the normal nerve impulse conduction by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase or cholinesterase in the nerves, causing a series of poisoning symptoms. In order to achieve the quantitative analysis of chlorpyrifos residues in agricultural products, an aptamer-controlled signal molecule release method was developed in this study. The signal molecule 4-ATP of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was loaded into aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs-NH2) prepared by the one pot method, and then coated with an aptamer of chlorpyrifos through electrostatic interaction. The specific binding of the aptamer and chlorpyrifos led to the release of 4-ATP, and the amount of 4-ATP released was positively correlated with the amount of chlorpyrifos. Finally, the standard curve of chlorpyrifos quantitative detection based on SERS was established. Meanwhile, Ag-carrying mesoporous silica (Ag@MSNs) was prepared as the reinforcement substrate for SERS detection. The results showed that there was a good linear correlation between the Raman intensity and the concentration of chlorpyrifos at 25–250 ng/mL, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 19.87 ng/mL. The recoveries of chlorpyrifos in the apple and tomato samples were 90.08–102.2%, with RSD < 3.32%. This method has high sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility and stability, and can be used for the quantitative detection of chlorpyrifos in the environment and agricultural products.

In-situ SERS detection of quinolone antibiotic residues in aquaculture water by multifunctional Fe3O4@mTiO2@Ag nanoparticles

Abstract:Antibiotic residues in aquaculture environments disrupt the ecosystem balance and pose a potential hazard to human health when entering the food chain. Therefore, ultra-sensitive detection of antibiotics is necessary. In this study, a multifunctional Fe3O4@mTiO2@Ag core-shell nanoparticle (NP), synthesized using a layer-by-layer method, was demonstrated to be useful as an enhanced substrate for in-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of various quinolone antibiotics in aqueous environments. The results showed that the minimum detectable concentrations of the six investigated antibiotics were 1 × 10-9 mol/L (ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enoxacin, enrofloxacin, and norfloxacin) and 1 × 10-8 mol/L (difloxacin hydrochloride) under the enrichment and enhancement of Fe3O4@mTiO2@Ag NPs. Additionally, there was a good quantitative relationship between the antibiotics concentrations and SERS peak intensities within a certain detection range. The results of the spiked assay of actual aquaculture water samples showed that the recoveries of the six antibiotics ranged from 82.9% to 113.5%, with relative standard deviations ranging from 1.71% to 7.24%. In addition, Fe3O4@mTiO2@Ag NPs achieved satisfactory results in assisting the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in aqueous environments. This provides a multifunctional solution for low concentration detection and efficient degradation of antibiotics in aquaculture water.

Abstract:This paper proposed a rapid, selective and sensitive molybdenum yellow derivatization coupled with Resonance Rayleigh scattering (MYD-RRS) method for detection of phosphate. Under the acidic condition, phosphate can be selectively transformed to Keggin type of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA, i.e., PMo 12 O 40 3− ) through molybdenum yellow derivatization reaction prior to RRS detection. The PMA can further react with cationic methyl violet (MV) to form larger PMA-MV ion association complexes, generating significant RRS signal. The concentration of phosphate was linearly related to the RRS signal in the range of 8–200 ng/mL, with the determining coefficient ( R 2 ) of 0.9973 and the detection limit of 4 ng/mL. The analytical procedure can be completed within 10 min and the RRS signal intensity can remain stable more than 4 h. The method showed good stability toward temperature and time, and good anti-interference capability. The method was applied to the determination of phosphate in real food samples with the recovery of 85–117% and RSD of 1–5.2%. With the advantages of rapidness, high sensitivity and good selectivity, the MYD-RRS method exhibits great potential to the determination of phosphate in food. It also provides an instructive strategy for detection of analytes with weak RRS signal.

Abstract:Phosphate (Pi) is crucial for various physiological processes and aquatic environments, which emphasizes the need for a simple, on-site sensor to promptly detect Pi for human health and environmental conservation. In this study, we propose a dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensor for highly sensitive and visual Pi detection. The sensor employs samarium ions (Sm3+) as a core component, with cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) and ofloxacin (OFL) serving as signal carriers. The CdTe-Sm(III)-OFL nanoprobe emits a purple fluorescence resulting from the red fluorescence of CdTe QDs and the blue-green fluorescence of OFL. The fluorescence of OFL is quenched by Sm3+ through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Upon Pi interaction, the FRET process is disrupted due to the competitive Pi-Sm3+ binding, which leads to the fluorescence recovery of OFL while the red fluorescence of CdTe remains steady. This enables the construction of a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for Pi detection, manifesting as a color change from purple to blue. The sensor demonstrated a linear response for Pi detection within the range of 0.1-75 μM, with a low detection limit of 17.0 nM. By utilizing the distinct fluorescence responses of various physiological phosphates and employing chemometrics, this innovative dual-emission sensor accurately distinguishes among different physiological phosphates. Furthermore, a portable lab-on-paper device based on CdTe-Sm(III)-OFL, coupled with a smartphone-integrated mini-device, is developed for swift Pi detection using an ordinary smartphone. Analytical performance validated on environmental and biological samples demonstrates the sensor's excellent robustness and adaptability. This study introduces a pioneering approach to fabricate ratiometric fluorescence sensors and customize portable, cost-effective mini-devices for precise target detection, thus opening avenues for advanced sensing strategies in various applications.

Abstract:Rapid identification and diagnosis of bacteria and other microorganisms is a great challenge for drinking water safety due to the increasing frequency of pathogenic infections. Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive tool to characterize the biochemical fingerprints of bacterial cells and its signal can be improved by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Thus, Raman scattering has a huge potential in fast diagnosis of pathogens in drinking water, with low cost and high reproducibility. In this work, we developed a novel fast diagnosis method to detect aquatic pathogens via magnetic SERS assay. With chemical co-precipitation synthesis and surface glucose reduction, the silver-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Ag@MNPs) had a well-developed core-shell structure and high efficiency to capture bacterial cells. Ag@MNPs achieved 103 enhancement factor for rhodamine 6G and the limit of detection was 10-9 M. The magnetic SERS assay also successfully detected various bacteria (A. baylyi and E. coli) with high sensitivity (105 CFU/mL). This platform provided a promising and easy-operation approach for pathogen detection for food and drinking water safety.

Abstract:Phosphate pollution leads to deterioration in water quality, posing a serious threat to human health. Therefore, it is important to develop a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probe for phosphate detection. Here, we report a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe, Fluorescein@NH2-UiO-66 (denoted as Flu@NH2-UiO-66), for the trace detection of phosphate in water. Specifically, during the in-situ solvothermal synthesis of Flu@NH2-UiO-66, fluorescein molecules were encapsulated into the cavities of the metal-organic framework. Furthermore, the encapsulation amount of fluorescein was controlled by adjusting the acidity of the system. The Flu@NH2-UiO-66 (60 H+) sample, prepared with a 60:1 molar ratio of acetic acid to the metal center exhibited distinct dual fluorescence signal peaks. The probe showed a highly selective fluorescence response to phosphate. Within a range of 0-20 μM phosphate concentration, the probe demonstrated excellent linear detection capability with a detection limit of 0.37 μM. Moreover, the mechanism of fluorescence enhancement can be attributed to the addition of phosphate, which greatly increases the UV absorbance of the probe. This study developed a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe capable of rapid, sensitive, and stable detection of trace phosphate, which is of great significance for environmental management.

Abstract:The plastics industry commonly uses dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as a plasticizer. DMP is highly permeable to nature at different pH levels and temperatures, resulting in the contamination of water, soil, and air. As a result of the high cost, low selectivity, and complicated pretreatment in the DMP detection process, this paper synthesized ferromagnetic nanomaterials with molecular imprinting, simplified the pretreatment process by ferromagnetic nanomaterials, selectively adsorbed DMP using the molecular imprinting method, and finally detected DMP with the material by SERS. Molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) have a higher affinity for DMP than NIPs, which are characterized by fast adsorption rates, strong binding ability, and improved selective adsorption ability. Furthermore, the MIPs are reusable, exhibiting only about a 7% loss in adsorption capacity after seven adsorption–desorption experiments. As a consequence of the adsorption of DMP onto Fe3O4@MIPs@Ag, DMP detection was achieved through SERS characterization, and it was found that the DMP concentration was linearly related to the intensity of the corresponding characteristic peak associated with the DMP, with a detection limit of 4.2 × 10–11 M. According to the tested water samples, the recovery rating ranged from 92.6 to 105%, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed method for the detection of DMP in real water samples.

Abstract:Phosphate ion (PO43-) serves as an important nutrient carrier to support the growth of aquatic animals and plants in aquatic systems. However, excess concentrations of PO43- are the key factor responsible for eutrophication, resulting in rapid deterioration of water quality. Therefore, accurate determination of PO43- is of great significance in water quality and security. In this study, flavin mononucleotide (FMN), an intracellular form of vitamin B2, was used as fluorophore. A novel "off-on" fluorescent sensing platform (FMN@Fe3O4) was fabricated for selective and sensitive detection of PO43-, and showed excellent fluorescence response and good selectivity for PO43- detection. With the addition of PO43-, the fluorescence intensity restored is proportional to PO43- concentration in the quantification range of 50 nM-0.75 μM with a limit of detection as low as 20 nM (0.62 μg.L-1, calculated by P element). An adsorption/desorption sensing mechanism via an in-depth analysis of the interfacial interaction between PO43- and FMN@Fe3O4 is proposed. FMN is first adsorbed by its terminal phosphate group on Fe3O4 particles to quench fluorescence. Free PO43- replaces the adsorbed FMN and restores the quenched fluorescence to achieve the aim of PO43- detection. In addition, this sensing system has been successfully validated in real water sample analysis and all reagents involved are nontoxic, environmentally benign, and easily-available. Therefore, this assay has great applicability in water quality monitoring.

Abstract:It is of great significance to develop a simple and effective method for constructing large-scale high-quality surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. Here Ag nanoparticle-assembled micro-bowl array was prepared by a close-packed polystyrene (PS) sphere monolayer templated electrodeposition approach. The fabricated Ag nanoparticle-assembled micro-bowl array shows high SERS sensitivity to rhodamine 6G (R6G) under an ultralow concentration of 1 fM, and exhibits excellent SERS spectral uniformity with a small relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7.6% and good reproducibility (a RSD ~8.2% for the average peak intensities from different batches of SERS substrates). The fabricated micro-bowl array SERS substrate was employed to detect pesticide residue (thiram and methyl parathion) on vegetables. The limit of detections (LODs) for the two pesticides are lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by European Union respectively, showing promising application in rapid inspection of food safety.

Abstract:To overcome the complicated pretreatment, low selectivity and low sensitivity detection associated with the detection of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), this study synthesized ferromagnetic nanomaterials that coupled with surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs). The pretreatment process can be simplified by ferromagnetic nanomaterials, then Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs selectively adsorbing DMP can be achieved, and SERS can be applied for DMP detection with high sensitivity. As a control, the non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Ag@NIPs were synthesized. Adsorption experiments results showed that the saturation adsorption amounts of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs is 36.74 mg/g with 40 mg/L DMP and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Ag@NIPs is 17.45 mg/g. For DMP, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs have a greater affinity. In addition, after seven adsorption-desorption cycles the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs are reusable with approximately a 9.8 % loss in adsorption capacity. With an 8.7 × 10 −9 M detection limit, DMP detection was performed by SERS, which revealed that the Raman intensities of the associated characteristic peak were linearly proportional to the DMP concentrations. As a result, the recovery rate of the testing artificial water varied from 87.9 % to 117 %. These outcomes show that the suggested technique for finding DMP in actual water samples is practical.
