Abstract:Citrus fruits, members of the Rutaceae family, have seen a surge in the popularity of their essential oils (EO) due to their versatile industrial applications. These EOs are primarily derived from citrus fruit peels, a practice that not only reduces waste generation but also minimizes environmental contamination. Citrus EO serves as a natural and cost-effective substitute for synthetic preservatives and flavoring agents, contributing to the pursuit of safe and wholesome food, a paramount goal in the food industry. The antimicrobial properties of key compounds such as D-limonene, linalool, α & β-pinene, sabinene, β-myrcene, α-terpineol, and other bioactive chemicals are well-documented. Moreover, these components exhibit antioxidative and potential anticancer attributes. Additionally, citrus EO-based films and coatings offer diverse applications in the realm of food packaging materials. This comprehensive review delves into a variety of extraction methods, component characterization, and recent applications of citrus essential oils across different food categories. As the demand for safe and natural food continues to grow, citrus essential oils employed as food preservatives hold a promising future. Nonetheless, further research is imperative to explore broader applications and ascertain potential allergenic and toxicological consequences, ensuring the continued advancement of this promising field.

Abstract:The fruits of Citrus limon are often purchased for their vitamin C-rich juice, while the fruit peel and the tree leaves are discarded as wastes. This study obtained the chemical profiles of the essential oils (EOs) of C. limon wastes (the peel and leaves), evaluated their medicinal value as antioxidants, their potential for sustainable use in agriculture as an insecticide for post-harvest preservation of grains, and their potential as a bioresource in livestock feed formulations. The EOs were isolated from C. limon leaves and peel using a hydro-distillation method on a Clevenger apparatus. The oil constituents were identified using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) hyphenated technique. The oils were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power methods. An insecticidal study was conducted using contact toxicity, fumigation, and repellence bioassay methods against Sitophilus zeamais (maize weevils). Finally, the predicted income from using lemon peel as an alternative or substitute ingredient for maize in livestock feed formulations was obtained through a conventional simulation method. Chemically, limonene was found to be present in all the EOs analyzed (12–52%), while α-pinene was only found in the fresh leaf and peel oils (13.3% and 10.6%). Caryophyllene oxide was identified as the major component of the dried leaf oil (17.7%). At 20 μg m, the dry peel oil exhibited the highest inhibitory activity (52.41 ± 0.26%) against the DPPH radical, which was comparable to L-ascorbic acid (a standard antioxidant) at 54.25 ± 3.55%. The insecticidal study revealed that the dry peel oil is a better insect repellent (73.33 ± 6.95% at 10 μL) and fumigant (LC50 = 0.17 μL g−1 after 48 h) natural agent compared to the peel oil. Conversely, the dry peel oil showed a better contact activity (LC50 = 1.69 μL g−1) against the maize weevils compared to the dry leaf oil. The simulation study showed the cost of using dry lemon peel as an alternative to maize in livestock feed formulation to be ZAR 2.8 billion, compared against the higher cost of feed formulation with maize, which currently stands at ZAR 24.9 billion. This study has shown that C. limon wastes (the peel and leaves) contain EOs with unique chemical profiles, valuable medicinal properties as free radical scavengers, and considerable insecticidal properties for agricultural use in post-harvest grain preservation, presenting a cost-effective and promising bioresource for livestock feed production.

Abstract:Citrus grandis Osbeck, commonly known as "pomelo" or "shaddock," is the largest citrus fruit, the peel of which is a well-known agricultural residual waste. Pomelo peel offers a wide range of components such as essential oils, polysaccharides, and phytochemicals with potential food applications. Utilization of pomelo peel to recover these components is an important step toward agricultural sustainability. This review covers pomelo peel utilization opportunities beyond conventional composting and animal feed production, and critically examines value-added uses via the recovery of potentially bioactive components. The peel of pomelo accounts for approximately 30% of the total fruit weight and contains phytochemicals, including aroma-active volatiles, pectin, flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, coumarins, and polysaccharides. Recovery of these phytochemicals offers an opportunity for value-added utilization such as the development of enriched or functional foods and nutraceuticals. The health-promoting and therapeutic potential of pomelo peel extracts and isolated pure compounds have been evaluated through numerous in vitro and in vivo studies that revealed a wide range of bioactivities, including hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Preclinical evidence highlights multifaceted molecular and signaling events that possibly underlie the said bioactive potential. Overall, the pomelo processing industry offers a great opportunity to recover or produce valuable products from the large amounts of residual wastes it generates. It is envisaged that a thorough understanding of the bioactive components of pomelo peel, their functional and nutraceutical applications, and mode of actions will benefit the food industry.

Abstract:To find a sustainable way to reuse leftover Citrus peels, their essential oils were prepared by various methods (hydro‐distillation vs. headspace) and the compositional variations of their volatile components were analyzed by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry in conjunction with multivariate analysis. In vitro and in silico studies assessed their antiaging potential as tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase inhibitors. Aging and agro‐waste are major challenges. Natural ingredients are preferred in skincare. This study intended to isolate the essential oils (EO) from the leftover peels obtained from three commonly edible Citrus species fruit peels, namely Citrus paradisi (grapefruit), Citrus sinensis (sweet orange), and Citrus deliciosa (mandarin). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis identified volatile constituents in EO and headspace aroma. Multivariate analysis distinguished between the three species. The antiaging effects of Citrus EO were assessed in vitro and in silico, studying volatile interactions with target enzymes. C. sinensis peels had the highest oil yield, rich in monoterpenes. C. paradisi and C. deliciosa contained sesquiterpenes. Limonene dominated the hydrodistilled EO: 94.50% in C. paradisi, 96.80% in C. sinensis, and 80.66% in C. deliciosa. Unsupervised multivariate analysis of Citrus species revealed that d‐limonene, γ‐terpinene, and β‐pinene are the key phytochemical markers contributing to their diverse chemical composition. C. paradisi exhibited the highest enzyme inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 12.82, 27.58, and 18.16 μg/mL for tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase, respectively. In silico studies showed that the volatiles can inhibit the tested antiaging enzymes. According to these findings, the investigated agro‐waste might slow aging in skin care.

Microwave Assisted Extraction of Citrus limetta Peel and assessment of its Bio-Actives Using HRLC-MS/MS

Abstract:Citrus limetta, often known as sweet lime, is one of India's most important crops due to its high demand in the agro-processing industry. Peel of Citrus limetta has signi�cant levels of polyphenolic chemicals that have pharmacological effects. In current study, the peel is valued for the bioactive compounds it contains. The total phenolic content (TPC) was 16.66 mg GAE/g with an extraction yield of 12.91%. Radical scavenging activity (RSA) was 78.05%, total �avanoid content (TFC) was 9.59 mg QE/g, and total phenolic content (TPC) was 9.59 mg QE/g. Sweet lime peel (SLP) extract was obtained by microwave assisted extraction (MAE) in methanol.LC-MS/MS results showed 18 �avonoid compounds along with polyphenols like rutin, curcumin diglucoside, carotenoid, coumeroic acid, coumaric acids, avonoid-7-o-glycosides, and Gardenin B that embrace anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inammatory, and antitumor activity. This method uses Q-TOF LC/MS with Agilent MassHunter Pro�ler software to investigate bioactive components in sweet lime peel.

Abstract:Although the peels of lemon and orange fruits are considered as a waste the essential oil extracted from them is important for food flavoring, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and detergent production. In this work, essential oils were extracted from fresh fruit peels of lemon (1.5%) and orange (3.4%) by hydro-distillation and their physiochemical properties were recorded. The chemical composition of the essential oils was also analyzed by GC-MS. Lemon fruit peel oil was composed of 12 compounds of which limonene (49.74%) was the main component and similarly orange fruit peel oil contained four compounds with limonene (95.19%) as major ingredient. The major component of the orange fruit peel oil was isolated by silica gel column chromatography and its structure was elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. In the meanwhile, it is possible to use the lemon and orange peels as the source of limonene, an important known bioactive compound. Raw lemon peel is applicable as a flavoring agent for baking bread, whereas the fruit leftovers can be used for compost preparation, and in the course municipal dry waste management can be improved.

Abstract:To verify the anti-fungus properties of the crop-harmful pseudocercospora, the essential oil (EO) of pomelo peel (PP) was extracted by a single factor combined with response surface optimization. Meanwhile, the composition and activity of EO were studied. The PP was squeezed by a screw extruder and pretreatmented by pectinase, then extracted by microwave-assisted steam distillation. The optimal conditions were as follows: pectinase dosage was 69.17 μmol/g, microwave power was 651.42 W and extraction time was 43.84 min. The dry weight (DW) yield of PPEO reached 14.63 mL/kg DW after BBD optimization. There were 23 compounds in the PPEO identified by GC-MS. Limonene, α-phrenbutene, and laurene in PPEO accounted for 79.31%, 4.72%, and 3.46%, respectively. In addition, the antifungal was effective when the concentration of PPEO was 3.5 mg/mL. Therefore, this study has guiding significance for the development of natural resources.

Abstract:A huge amount of orange peel waste is annually discharged into the environment. Processing of this waste for the control of post-harvest fruit diseases can reduce environmental pollution. Essential oils (EOs) from fruit peels of Citrus reticulata × sinensis (Sanh cultivar) and Citrus sinensis (Xoan, Mat and Navel cultivar) were investigated for their ability to control anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum scovillei on mangoes. EOs were extracted by hydro-distillation and analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. The antifungal activity of the EOs was determined by in vitro and in vivo assays. The Mat cultivar had the highest extraction yield of 3% FW, followed by Xoan (2.9%), Sanh (2.2%), and Navel (1%). The chemical composition of the EOs was similar, with limonene as the main compound (around 96%). The antifungal activity of EOs was not different, with a minimum fungicidal concentration of 16% for both fungi. The disease inhibition of EOs increased with their concentration. The highest inhibition of anthracnose caused by both fungi on mangoes was achieved at 16% EO. EOs had no adverse effect on mango quality (pH, total soluble solids, total acidity, color and brightness of mangoes), except firmness and weight loss at high concentrations (16%). Orange EOs can be used as bio-fungicides to control mango anthracnose at high concentrations.

Abstract:The peel which is the primary waste of citrus fruit processing is usually discarded. But these peels are good source of pectin, phenols, flavonoids, and limonene. The peel can be used to extract essential oil that can be used in food system. The present study aimed to extraction and analyse the chemical composition of citrus peel essential oil by hydrodistillation and soxhlet methodThe optimum condition for essential oil extraction by hydrodistillation method was standardized and the oil extraction was efficient at 95 °C. The extraction time was 3 hours with solid solvent ratio of 1:10 (g sample/mL of water). d-Limonene is the major compound present in all three citrus peel essential oils extracted by both the methods followed by β myrcene, α pinene, β pinene, and γ terpinene. Essential oil from fresh citrus peel contains many other compounds such as neral, caryophyllene, β bisbolene, etc. These bioactive volatile compounds are responsible for the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the essential oil.

Abstract:Pomelo ( Citrus maxima) is one of the citrus species that is widely consumed. Consumption of pomelo oranges produces fruit peels that tend to be underutilized, so it may produce some waste. Most of the reported research has been extensively studied for its phytochemical and pharmacological properties. The objective of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the chemical compounds and pharmacological activity of the pomelo peel as an introduction to further research related to structure determination and activity testing. Several phytochemicals have been reported from Citrus maxima fruit peel including flavonoids, coumarins, phenylpropanoids, phenolics, steroids, and essential oils. These phytochemicals also exhibit some pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammation, insecticidal, antialzheimer, and antidiabetic. Further research is needed to explore the fruit peel extract's activities and compounds in more detail for drug design, herbal products, and or functional foods. Proposed development based on pharmacological activities such as external remedies, internal remedies, dietary supplements, and pesticides.

Abstract:The one-third of all food produced for human use is wasted each year which has made food waste a serious problem all around the world. Citrus juice manufacturing factories generate peel leftovers that can account for 50-60% of the weight of the fruit, contributing significantly to food waste. This study investigates the extraction of orange and lemon peel oils using the Soxhlet process and their analysis via gas chromatography. The aim is to identify and quantify key volatile compounds present in these oils, thereby putting the leftover peels to use. Fresh orange and lemon peels were transformed into zest and extracted using Hexane and Ethanol as solvent in a Soxhlet apparatus. Gas chromatography with a specialized column and detector unveiled major volatile compounds, including limonene, linalool, citral. These compounds contribute to the characteristic aroma and potential bioactivity of the oils. Orange peels displayed notably higher limonene content compared to lemon peels. This approach illuminated the chemical composition of the oils, offering opportunities in food, cosmetics, and fragrance industries. Orange peels contained 70-90% limonene, significantly more than lemon peels. The study concluded that peels harbor 28 volatile substances, with limonene responsible for their distinctive citrus scent. In sum, this research underscores the effectiveness of Soxhlet extraction, providing insights into orange and lemon peel oils' composition using Gas chromatography and applications.

Abstract:The present study deals with the characterization of essential oils extracted from both fresh and sun-dried lemon (citrus limon (L.) Burm.f) peels by hydrodistillation, followed by extraction with ether or ethyl acetate, yielding four essential oil samples. The extraction yield varied between 0.1 and 1.65%. The essential oils constituents were identified using GC/MS analysis; limonene was the major compound ranging between 3.75 and 76.78%. In addition, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were prepared from sun-dried lemon peels, and characterized by HPLC–PDA-ESI–MS. Four flavanoneO-diglycosides (neoreiocitrin, neohespiridin, melitidin and naringin), three flavone di-C-glycosides(diosmetin-6,8-di-C-glycoside, apigenin-6,8-di-C-glycoside, di-C-glycosideflavone), two flavone O-diglycosides (vicenin 2, neodiosmin), three polymethoxyflavones (tangeretin, nobiletin, 5,6,7,4′-tetramethoxyflavone), and two coumarins (scoparin, isomeranzin) were identified. Lemon peels ethyl acetate extract exhibits a powerful antioxidant activity (IC50 = 0.09 µg/ mL) compared to those of vitamin E (IC50 = 0.017 µg/ mL) and BHT (IC50 = 0.026 µg/ mL). On the other hand, essential oils from fresh and sun-dried lemon peels as well as organic extracts exhibited interesting antimicrobial activities against Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus (Gram+) and Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae (Gram−). Lemon peels would be used in the agro-food industry as alternative to the undesirable chemical additives.

Abstract:Two essential oils were isolated from discarded perfume lemon and leaves ( Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F.) by hydro-distillation with good yield (0.044% for perfume lemon and 0.338% for leaves). Their biological activities were evaluated against five selected bacterial strains and Aedes albopictus ( Ae. albopictus , Diptera: Culicidae). Chemical composition indicated that both essential oils were rich in essential phytochemicals including hydrocarbons, monoterpenes and sesquiterpene. These constituents revealed some variability among the oils displaying interesting chemotypes ( R )-(+)-limonene (12.29–49.63%), citronellal (5.37–78.70%) and citronellol (2.98–7.18%). The biological assessments proved that the two essential oils had similar effect against bacterial (inhibition zones diameter ranging from 7.27 ± 0.06 to 10.37 ± 0.15 mm; MICs and MBCs ranging from 1.6 to 6.4 mg/mL); against Ae. albopictus larvae (LC 50 ranging from 384.81 to 395.09 ppm) and adult mosquito (LD 50 ranging from 133.059 to 218.962 μg/cm 2 ); the activity of the two chemotypes (( R )-(+)-limonene and citronellal): larvae (LC 50 ranging from 267.08 to 295.28 ppm), which were all presented in dose-dependent manners. Through this work, we have showcased that recycling and reusing of agriculture by-products, such as discarded perfume lemon and leaves can produce eco-friendly alternatives in bacterial disinfectants and mosquito control product.

Monoclonal antibody‐gold silver staining dot assay for the detection of antigenaemia in candidosis

Abstract:Summary. A monoclonal antibody (Mab), designated 5B2, reacting with cell wall mannoproteins of Candida albicans has been purified and coupled to colloidal gold. The ability of the gold conjugated Mab to detect C. albicans antigens in serum during infection has been assessed in a dot immunobinding assay involving an immunogold silver enhancement procedure (GSS). A double blind study was made with sera from 140 guinea pigs, including 40 control animals and 100 infected intravenously with C. albicans. Sera from infected animals were collected either 2 days (4 animals), 15 days (9 animals), or 21 days (87 animals) after inoculation. The overall sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of the test were 89, 95 and 98%, respectively. However, differences were encountered in the ratio of positive tests in relation to duration of the infection. Mab‐GSS dot immunobinding has also been applied, together with Mab co‐counterimmunoelec‐trophoresis on successive sera from 2 patients who recovered from clinically and mycologically proven episodes of systemic candidosis. It was demonstrated that both patients synthesized antibodies against glycoproteins sharing the 5B2 epitope, which was initially present transiently in their sera.

This work focused on studying the physicochemical characteristics and yield percentage of citrus essential oil (CEO) extracted from citrus peels at different extraction times, extraction temperatures, solid–liquid ratios, and solvent combinations, and the data of yield percentage was subjected to find the best kinetic model for better yield. C. sinensis peel powder was subjected to Soxhlet extraction of essential oil at varied solid:liquid ratios (1/2, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8, and 1/10), time intervals in minutes (120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, and 280), temperatures (50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100°C), and solvents (n‐hexane, petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol, and water) to characterize their impact on yield percentage. The essential oil extraction kinetics were assessed using the experimental data and two different kinetic models (zero‐order and first‐order kinetic model). The bioactive compounds were assessed using GC–MS, as well. Amongst the other solvents, maximum extraction yield was observed at 90°C for 270 min using n‐hexane. GC–MS results showed that d‐limonene was the predominant compound constituting 41.41%. A good agreement between applied kinetic models and experimental data was demonstrated by the first‐order model (R2 = .9830) and the zero‐order kinetic model (R2 = .9719). Thus, the effective conditions for maximum extraction yield of CEO peels were optimized and the extracted CEO can be used in food packaging applications for shelf‐life extension. Practical applications Effective food waste management is vital for promoting sustainable resource usage, reducing environmental impact, saving money and energy, addressing global hunger, and upholding ethical and social responsibilities. It is important to minimize food waste throughout the entire food supply chain. Citrus peels are the by‐products of the citrus fruit processing industry and households which contribute to organic waste and its management is an important consideration for environmental sustainability. Thus, this study aims to manage these wastes by extracting essential oil from them and optimizing their process. The role of Citrus sinensis essential oil in the food industry includes natural flavoring with a consistent flavor profile, versatility in culinary applications, provides a natural and clean label, and are cost‐effective. Also, the universally recognized and enjoyed flavor of C. sinensis makes its essential oil a popular choice for products with broad consumer appeal. However, it is essential to follow regulatory guidelines for food‐grade essential oils and adhere to recommended usage levels. The results of this study have practical implications for improving yield, quality, efficiency, and sustainability of the extracted essential oil in the food industry. The optimized data can positively impact various aspects of food production, by enhancing flavor profiles, reducing the processing time and costs, and thus facilitating scale‐up potential. In addition, proper storage conditions should be maintained to ensure the stability and quality of the extracted essential oil over time.

Abstract:Citron peel is a valuable by-product gained from the fruit processing industry, which can be utilized as a potential feedstock to extract important commercial compounds such as essential oils. This conversion process can play a main role in reducing pollution and saving the environment by reusing waste, in addition to producing added-value products. In the present study, to extract the essential oil from citron peel were applied various methods of hydrodistillation and supercritical CO 2 , and the different essential oils produced were evaluated and compared in terms of extraction yield, physical attributes, bioactive compounds, chemical compositions, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The results showed that higher amount of extraction yield (7.6%), total phenol (112.84 mg GAE/g), flavonoid compounds (33.38 mg QE/g) and limonene (the major volatile component of citron peel essential oil) (60.69%) belonged to the supercritical CO 2 sample. The DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power of all the essential oils increased in a concentration-dependent manner (50–2000 μg/mL). The treatments of hydrodistillation and supercritical CO 2 in the order recorded less and more IC 50 values in both DPPH and FRAP tests. The obtained data from assay of MIC, MBC and inhibition zone diameter represented that citron peel essential oils possessed the best antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus compared to Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , respectively. Therefore, citron peel essential oil considering the high levels of volatile and bioactive compounds viz limonene, phenol and flavonoid and desirable characteristics of antioxidant and antimicrobial can be used as a natural functional additive in the food industry.

Abstract:Lemon (Citrus limon burm f.) peel is a waste from processing lemons that has not been utilized optimally. One effort to utilize lemon peel waste is by extracting essential oils. In the process of extracting essential oils of lemon peel, a waste by-product will be produced in the form of solid waste (cohobation waste). In order to increase the economic value of lemon peel, it is necessary to evaluate the content of active components in the cohobation waste of the lemon peel extraction process. This study aims to examine the essential oil components in lemon peel and the active components contained in the cohobation waste resulted from the extraction process. The essential oil extraction method used was cohobation. The testing method used was the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). The results showed that the essential oil components extracted from lemon peel were: d-limonene (79.38%), citral (5.98%), neral (3.62%), 3-cyclohexene-1-methanol, α.,α.4-trimethyl-3-cyclohexene-1-methanol (2.94%), linalool (2%), β-myrcene (1.18%), and p-mentha-1,5-dien-8-ol (1.85%). While the results of the cohobation waste test contained various active components, such as: 9,12 octadecadienoic acid (20.66%), g-sitosterol (11.47%), hexadecanoic acid (9.85%), β-bisabolene (9.45%), β-fenchol (7.57%), α-bergamotene (5.47%), vitamin E (2.57%), and campesterol (2.24%).
Optimisation of supercritical fluid extraction of orange (Citrus sinenis L.) peel essential oil and its physicochemical properties

Abstract:In this study, the choice of supercritical fluid extraction as a renewable alternative for extracting orange peel essential oil (OPEO) was motivated by concerns about sustainability with conventional solvent extraction methods. The physical and chemical characteristics of OPEO were examined to assess its potential as a sustainable resource. The extraction process was optimised, and the ideal conditions determined were 317.51 min of extraction time at 74.85 °C with a solvent-to-sample ratio of 4. Analysis of the extracted OPEO revealed significant values for saponification (121.67 mg KOH/g), acid (4.13 mg KOH/g), ester (117.54 mg KOH/g), and free fatty acid (1.56 mg KOH/g) content, demonstrating its composition. Notably, key ingredients such as Limonene (43.96%), α-pinene (15.60%), β-myrcene (10.21%), γ -terpinene (5.00%), and α-terpineol (4.15%) were found in high proportions according to chemical composition analysis. Furthermore, OPEO exhibited excellent antioxidant properties with an IC50 value of 7.73 ± 2.00 mg/mL and displayed notable antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms, including P. aeruginosa (17.7 ± 0.6 mm), E. coli (11.0 ± 0.0 mm), K. pneumoniae (10.7 ± 0.6 mm), and S. aureus (10.3 ± 0.6 mm). These findings have significant implications for the flavor and fragrance sector, as well as for the food preservation industry.

Abstract:Pomelo fruit pulp mainly is consumed fresh and with very little processing, and its peels are discarded as biological waste, which can cause the environmental problems. The peels contain several bioactive chemical compounds, especially essential oils (EOs). The content of a specific EO is important for the extraction process in industry and in research units such as breeding research. The explanation of the biosynthesis pathway for EO generation and change was included. The chemical bond vibration affected the prediction of EO constituents was comprehensively explained by regression coefficient plots and x-loading plots. Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS/NIRS) is a prominent rapid technique used for fruit quality assessment. This research work was focused on evaluating the use of VIS/NIRS to predict the composition of EOs found in the peel of the pomelo fruit (Citrus maxima (J. Burm.) Merr. cv Kao Nam Pueng) following storage. The composition of the peel oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) at storage durations of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 days (at 10 °C and 70% relative humidity). The relationship between the NIR spectral data and the major EO components found in the peel, including nootkatone, geranial, β-phellandrene and limonene, were established using the raw spectral data in conjunction with partial least squares (PLS) regression. Preprocessing of the raw spectra was performed using multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) or second derivative preprocessing. The PLS model of nootkatone with full MSC had the highest correlation coefficient between the predicted and reference values (r = 0.82), with a standard error of prediction (SEP) of 0.11% and bias of 0.01%, while the models of geranial, β-phellandrene and limonene provided too low r values of 0.75, 0.75 and 0.67, respectively. The nootkatone model is only appropriate for use in screening and some other approximate calibrations, though this is the first report of the use of NIR spectroscopy on intact fruit measurement for its peel EO constituents during cold storage.
