Abstract:An omnidirectional structural color based on the metal-SiOx-metal stack structure is proposed, which can present the same perceived color for a broad range of incidence angles. The tunable structural color can be obtained with adjustable intermediate dielectric layer by simply adjusting the deposition condition, especially the oxygen flow rate during the deposition processes. The resonance condition can be satisfied across the whole visible light region with this special dielectric. The strong absorption caused by the resonance within the metal-SiOx-metal structure accounts for the efficient spectral filtering feature, and the constant phase shift within the dielectric layer leads to angle insensitivity of this color filter. This simple color tuning method for omnidirectional structural colors can have a great potential in various applications such as displaying, imaging, colorful decoration, anti-counterfeiting and so forth.
Flexible Dynamic Structural Color Based on an Ultrathin Asymmetric Fabry-Perot Cavity with Phase-Change Material for Temperature Perception

Abstract:Dynamic structural color has attracted considerable attentions due to its good tunable characteristics. Here, an ultrathin asymmetric Fabry-Perot (FP)-type structural color with phase-change material VO2 cavity is proposed. The color-switching performance can be realized by temperature regulation due to the reversible monoclinic-rutile phase transition of VO2. The various, vivid structural color can be generated by simply changing the thickness of VO2 and Ag layers. Moreover, the simple structural configuration enables a large-scale, low-cost preparation on both rigid and flexible substrates. Accordingly, a flexible dynamic structural color membrane is adhered on a cup with a curved surface to be used for temperature perception. The proposed dynamic structural color has potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, temperature perception, camouflage coatings among other flexible optoelectronic devices.
Non-iridescent, Crack-Free, Conductive Structural Colors Enhanced by Flexible Nanosheets of Reduced Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Non-iridescent structural colors with wide viewing angles are produced by amorphous photonic structure (APS) and have received increasing attention. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate of non-iridescent, crack-free and functional structural colors, simultaneously. Here, the flexible lamellar nanostructures of graphene oxide (GO) are introduced as a black additive to fabricate amorphous, crack-free structural colors. The color hue and spectral purity of APS film can be easily tuned by adjusting the diameter of spheres and concentration of GO. Furthermore, after reduction treatment, the APS film possesses excellent visibility, flexibility and conductivity, paving the way toward their practical applications in flexible sensors, solar cells and full-color paper-like displays.

Abstract:Structural colors are colors generated by the interaction between incident light and nanostructures. Structural colors have been studied for decades due to their promising advantages of long-term stability and environmentally friendly properties compared with conventional pigments and dyes. Previous studies have demonstrated many artificial structural colors inspired by naturally generated colors from plants and animals. Moreover, many strategies consisting of different principles have been reported to achieve dynamically tunable structural colors. Furthermore, the artificial structural colors can have multiple functions besides decoration, such as absorbing solar energy, anti-counterfeiting, and information encryption. In the present work, we reviewed the typical artificial structural colors generated by multilayer films, photonic crystals, and metasurfaces according to the type of structures, and discussed the approaches to achieve dynamically tunable structural colors.

Abstract:In addition to colorant-based pigmentation, structure is a major contributor to a material's color. In nature, structural color is often caused by the interaction of light with dielectric structures whose dimensions are on the order of visible-light wavelengths. Different optical interactions including multilayer interference, light scattering, the photonic crystal effect, and combinations thereof give rise to selective transmission or reflection of particular light wavelengths, which leads to the generation of structural color. Recent developments in nanofabrication of plasmonic and carbon nanostructures have opened another efficient way to control light properties at the subwavelength scale, including visible-light wavelength selection, which can produce structural color. In this Concept, the most relevant and representative achievements demonstrated over the last several years are presented and analyzed. These plasmonic and carbon nanostructures are believed to offer great potential for high-resolution color displays and spectral filtering applications.

Abstract:Dynamic control of structural colors across the visible spectrum with high brightness has proven to be a difficult challenge. Here, this is addressed with a tuneable reflective nano-optical cavity that uses an electroactive conducting polymer (poly(thieno[3,4-b]thiophene)) as spacer layer. Electrochemical doping and dedoping of the polymer spacer layer provides reversible tuning of the cavity's structural color throughout the entire visible range and beyond. Furthermore, the cavity provides high peak reflectance that varies only slightly between the reduced and oxidized states of the polymer. The results indicate that the polymer undergoes large reversible thickness changes upon redox tuning, aided by changes in optical properties and low visible absorption. The electroactive cavity concept may find particular use in reflective displays, by opening for tuneable monopixels that eliminate limitations in brightness of traditional subpixel-based systems.

Abstract:Precise manipulation of light-matter interaction has enabled a wide variety of approaches to create bright and vivid structural colours. Techniques utilizing photonic crystals, Fabry-P\'erot cavities, plasmonics, or high-refractive index dielectric metasurfaces have been studied for applications ranging from optical coatings to reflective displays. However, complicated fabrication procedures for sub-wavelength nanostructures, limited active areas, and inherent absence of tunability with these approaches significantly impede their further developments towards flexible, large-scale, and switchable devices compatible with facile and cost-effective production. Herein, we present a way to generate structural colours based on conducting polymer thin films prepared on metallic surfaces via vapour phase polymerization and ultraviolet (UV) light patterning. Varying the UV dose leads to synergistic variation of film absorption and thickness, which generates controllable colours from violet to red. Together with greyscale photomasks this enables fabrication of high-resolution colour images using single exposure steps. We further demonstrate spatiotemporal tuning of the structurally coloured surfaces and images via electrochemical modulation of the polymer redox state. The simple structure, facile fabrication, wide colour gamut, and dynamic colour tuning make this concept competitive for future multi-functional and smart displays.

Abstract:Structural coloration generates colors by the interaction between incident light and micro- or nano-scale structures. It has received tremendous interest for decades, due to advantages including robustness against bleaching and environmentally friendly properties (compared with conventional pigments and dyes). As a versatile coloration strategy, the tuning of structural colors based on micro- and nanoscale photonic structures has been extensively explored and can enable a broad range of applications including displays, anti-counterfeiting, and coating. However, scholarly research on structural colors has had limited impact on commercial products because of their disadvantages in cost, scalability, and fabrication. In this review, we analyze the key challenges and opportunities in the development of structural colors. We first summarize the fundamental mechanisms and design strategies for structural colors while reviewing the recent progress in realizing dynamic structural coloration. The promising potential applications including optical information processing and displays are also discussed while elucidating the most prominent challenges that prevent them from translating into technologies on the market. Finally, we address the new opportunities that are underexplored by the structural coloration community but can be achieved through multidisciplinary research within the emerging research areas.
Simulation Study of Dynamic Color Modulation Based on Tunable Micro/Nano-Structure Array

Abstract:With the development of nanotechnology, it has been accessible to display colors by artificial micro/nano-structure, and then the study of structure coloring has become a hot subject, opening a new space for inkless printing. In this paper, a dynamic color modulation method based on tunable micro/nano-structure array is proposed. To tune colors on the same device, a periodic micro/nano-structure array is designed with functional material inside, which could alter the height difference between up and bottom surface precisely by applying an external voltage. It is modeled, and simulated by the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method in this work. In simulations, perpendicular incident linearly polarized light source is applied, and parameters of surface height difference and period are swept. Series reflective spectra of the devices are obtained, and their corresponding colors are calculated and marked on the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram. Simulation results demonstrate that when the period is in the range of 100-300 nm, full-color modulation could be realized by varying the height of functional material film via applied voltage, and the peak intensities of reflective spectra are at about 60%, having high energy efficiency. This method is innovative and provides a theoretical basis for the dynamic color modulation micro/nano device, which is quite promising in fields like inkless printing and display technology.

Abstract:Nanostructures similar to those found in the vividly blue wings of Morpho butterflies and colorful photonic crystals enable structural color through constructive interference of light waves. Different from commonly studied structure-colored materials using periodic structures to manipulate optical properties, we report a previously unrecognized approach to precisely control the structural color and light transmission via a novel photonic colloidal gel without long-range order. Nanoparticles in this gel form micrometer-sized bicontinuous domains driven by the microphase separation of binary solvents. This approach enables dynamic coloration with a precise wavelength selectivity over a broad range of wavelengths extended well beyond the visible light that is not achievable with traditional methods. The dynamic wavelength selectivity is thermally tunable, reversible, and the material fabrication is easily scalable.

Abstract:A digitalized lithography technique is employed to create pixelated photoresist microarrays of different heights, allowing precise control over the thickness of the liquid crystal (LC) layer. Simultaneously, dynamic and reversible tunability of the structural color is achieved by stimuli‐responsive LCs. Applications of this technology in optical steganography, color‐based thermal sensors, and optical coding are also explored. Structural colors are widespread in nature and have become an important component of the lives. Considerable efforts have been made toward reversible color tuning, which underpins intriguing applications, including color displays, anti‐counterfeiting, and information encryption. However, the limited size, complicated fabrication processes, and low modulation speeds of structural colors are the main obstacles to their further development. Herein, a facile method to realize dynamically tunable structural colors is presented, which are enabled by the pixelated programming of soft materials on thickness. Pixelated photoresist microarrays with different heights are obtained using a digitalized lithography technique, enabling delicate control over the thickness of the liquid crystal (LC) layers. Stimuli‐responsive LCs endow structural colors with dynamic and reversible tunability and exhibit remarkable switching speeds with external stimuli. The proposed strategy sheds new light on dynamically tunable structural colors and promotes the development of optical anti‐counterfeiting, thermal sensors, and advanced information encryption.

Abstract:Tunable structural color has many potential applications in artificial camouflage, mechanical sensors, etc. Despite the extensive efforts to develop efficient tunable structural color, there is still a wide gap between the existing "passive" tuning methods and the "active" strategy found on organisms such as chameleons that can change color according to the environment. Inspired by the active tunable color system of chameleons, we propose a smart skin comprising a nanoscale hole array of photonic crystals, carbon nanotube coatings, and liquid crystal elastomers, to integrate multiple functions, i.e., structural color tunability, sensing, and actuation, in one structure. The smart skin was further coupled with an image acquisition unit (which mimics eyes to obtain colors from the environment) and a controller (which mimics the brain to process the signals transmitted from the image acquisition unit to the smart skin), to construct an active tunable structural color system. The proposed system autonomously modulates the color according to the environmental color. To validate the color tuning, color scanning from red to green to blue or vice versa is demonstrated in this work, which could certainly open up new paths to create active tunable structural color systems, and thus, push the development of structural color-based devices and systems.

Abstract:Reflective structural colors have backlight-free supremacy and can provide energy-efficient and environmental-friendly color production for many applications. However, they are hindered by the complex process and incorrect colors after fabrication. Here, a pixelated electrothermal oxidation technique is proposed that can precisely tailor and produce reflective structural colors covering the entire visible range, providing the possibility for customized structural color filter arrays from a titanium canvas. Furthermore, as a demonstration, a photonic-firework-like color filter array is achieved in a single step via thermal engineering. Based on this one-step-forming color array, a computational spectrometer is also realized featuring a resolvability of 10 nm and operating bandwidth covering the whole visible range. Considering its compactness and mass production capability, this method has numerous potential applications in, e.g., imaging, anti-counterfeiting, printing, color display, and spectroscopy.

Abstract:Structural color caused by thin-film interference is widespread and simple in nature. Many researchers have already showed the reversible color change of structural color system, but it is difficult to regulate dynamically with tunable intensity and viewable angle. Herein, a dynamic structural color platform is reported by combining spontaneous thin film interference and wrinkling phenomenon in nature. This robust yet low cost strategy enables large-scale and spatially arbitrary preparation of a uniform structural color surface through the whole visible spectral range. Furthermore, the prepared isotropic and anisotropic structural colors on disordered and ordered wrinkled thin films (WTFs) exhibit different optical properties that can be precisely and reversibly regulated by ultraviolet (UV) light and near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. This exquisite and tunable structural color platform may find applications in information storage, smart display, anticounterfeiting and encryption.
Tunable Structural Color Patterns Based on the Visible‐Light‐Responsive Dynamic Diselenide Metathesis

Abstract:Structural color materials with reversible stimuli-responsiveness to external environment have been widely used in sensors, encryption, display, and other fields. Compared with other stimuli, visible light is highly controllable both temporally and spatially with less damage to materials, which is more suitable for structural color patterning. Herein, a new diselenide-containing shape memory material is prepared and used for creating patterns via visible light stimulus. In this system, the structural color originates from birefringence of stretched materials, whose shapes can be fixed while maintaining the mechanical stress. The fixed stress can be released by diselenide metathesis under visible light irradiation. By regulating the wavelength or irradiation time with a commercial projector, the pattern with tunable structural colors is realized and the structural color pattern can be erased and rewritten arbitrarily. During the patterning process, the optical signal is first stored as mechanical signal and then transformed back to optical signal. It is a new method for preparing visible-light-responsive structural color material and has great potential in display devices, anticounterfeiting labels, and data storage.

Abstract:Structural color materials, which use nano- or microstructures to reflect specific wavelengths of ambient white light, have drawn much attention owing to their wide applications ranging from optoelectronics, coatings, to energy-efficient reflective displays. Although various structural color materials based on specular or diffuse reflection have been demonstrated, neither efficient retroreflective structural colors nor iridescent and non-iridescent colors to different observers simultaneously were reported by existing artificial or natural structural color materials. Here, we show that by partially embedding a monolayer of polymer microspheres on the sticky side of a transparent tape, the spontaneously formed interferometric structure on the surface of air-cushioned microspheres can lead to unique structural colors that remain non-iridescent under coaxial illumination and viewing conditions, but appear iridescent under noncoaxial illumination and viewing conditions. Our findings demonstrate a smart, energy-efficient, and tunable retroreflective structural color material that is especially suitable for nighttime traffic safety and advertisement display applications.
All-Dielectric Structural Coloration Empowered by Bound States in the Continuum

Abstract:The technological requirements of low-power and high-fidelity color displays have been instrumental in driving research into advanced coloration technologies. At the forefront of these developments is the implementation of dye-free coloration techniques, which overcome previous constraints related to insufficient resolution and color fading. In this context, resonant dielectric nanostructures have emerged as a promising paradigm, showing great potential for high efficiency, remarkably high color saturation, wide gamut palette, and realistic image reproduction. However, they still face limitations related to color accuracy, purity, and simultaneous brightness tunability. Here, we demonstrate an all-dielectric metasurface empowered by photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs), which supports sharp resonances throughout the visible spectral range, ideally suited for producing a wide range of structural colors. The metasurface design consists of titanium dioxide (TiO2) ellipses with carefully controlled sizes and geometrical asymmetry, allowing versatile and on-demand variation of the brightness and hue of the output colors, respectively.

Eye‐Friendly Reflective Structural Colors with Shortwave Infrared Shielding

Abstract:Abstract A large number of structural colors proposed concentrate on the optical spectral features in the visible region for improving their color gamut, purity, and brightness. However, there are few attentions on the shortwave infrared region of structural colors, detrimental to human eyes under the long‐term exposure. Here, an asymmetric Fabry–Pérot cavity‐based reflective structural color, composed of planar alternating multilayers of Ti and indium tin oxide (ITO), is proposed and demonstrated, which possesses distinguishing optical features in both visible and shortwave infrared regions. The resonant optical filter at the visible region exhibits a high‐contrast reflective peak due to the constructive interference, generating purer and brighter reflective colors. While displaying vivid colors, the designed structure can also achieve an average light absorption up to 89% across the whole shortwave infrared region to effectively prevent it entering human eyes, benefitting from destructive interference. By controlling the dielectric ITO spacer thickness, full‐color display covering the entire visible region can be realized, even including black color. Consequently, the color gamut exhibits around 135% of standard Red Green Blue (sRGB) and 100% of Adobe RGB. Meanwhile, the proposed structural colors also demonstrate an angle tolerance of 60°, a good thermal stability, and mechanical flexibility.

Abstract:Tunable structural color has gained significant attention due to its dynamic characteristics. However, conventional devices are usually regulated only in their color capabilities by structural parameters, restricting real-time dynamic applications. In this study, we propose an ultra-thin asymmetric Fabry–Perot cavity patterned with phase-change materials (MPMP). The reversible phase transition of VO2 induces changes in the MPMP's optical performance, enabling color mode switching through temperature control and resulting in rapid color conversion and low-temperature regulation. By adjusting relevant structural parameters of the VO2 layer and nanodiscs, the color performance range can be tailored. Through numerical investigations, we demonstrate that MPMP can produce stable transformation of dynamic structural colors by harnessing the phase-change effect. Our research unveils new possibilities for applications such as anti-counterfeiting, bio/chemical sensing, and temperature sensing.

Abstract:Structural colors, generated by the interaction of interference, diffraction, and scattering between incident light and periodic nanostructured surfaces with features of the same scale with incident visible light wavelengths, have recently attracted intense interest in a wide range of research fields, due to their advantages such as various brilliant colors, long-term stability and environmental friendliness, low energy consumption, and mysterious biological functions. Tremendous effort has been made to design structural colors and considerable progress has been achieved in the past few decades. However, there are still significant challenges and obstacles, such as durability, portability, compatibility, recyclability, mass production of structural-color materials, etc., that need to be solved by rational structural design and novel manufacturing strategies. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of bio-inspired structural colors and their applications. First, we introduce several typical natural structural colors displayed by living organisms from fundamental optical phenomena, including interference, diffraction grating, scattering, photonic crystals effects, the combination of different phenomena, etc. Subsequently, we review recent progress in bio-inspired artificial structural colors generated from advanced micro/nanoscale manufacturing strategies to relevant biomimetic approaches, including self-assembly, template methods, phase conversion, magnetron sputtering, atomic layer deposition, etc. Besides, we also present the current and potential applications of structural colors in various fields, such as displays, anti-counterfeiting, wearable electronics, stealth, printing, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future development directions of structural colors, aiming to push forward the research and applications of structural-color materials.
