Abstract:The applications of edible coatings stemmed exclusively from alginate in food packaging are restricted due to their inherent deficient antimicrobial, barrier, and UV-barrier properties. In this work, we aimed to design smart alginate-based coatings for active food packaging through the addition of both aloe vera (AV) and garlic oil (GO). The interactions between the film components were verified by FTIR and XRD. Thermal and mechanical properties were improved by the presence of AV and GO. The presence of AV and GO did not significantly influence the transparency of alginate films. The films exhibited a significant UV-shielding to all UV regions. Water vapor permeability was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced either through the incorporation of AV or GO. The antimicrobial properties of the prepared films were considerably improved by the presence of AV and GO. The shelf-life of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was extended when coated with the alginate film incorporated with AV and GO. Owing to the outstanding UV-shielding, mechanical, thermal, and antimicrobial properties, the alginate/AV/GO active coatings could potentially be implemented in the food packaging industry.

Abstract:A degradable and antibacterial sodium alginate film containing functional Au-TiO2 nanocomposites for food packaging was successfully developed. The Au-TiO2 nanocomposites are synthesized hydrothermally and mixed with the alginate solution to form the film by a casting method. The Au-TiO2 nanocomposites enable the film with excellent visible light absorption and transfer ability with the light absorption rang covering UV-visible wavelength (300-800 nm) and induce the increase of the film water contact angle from 40 degrees to 74 degrees, which contributes to the film shape stability. Furthermore, compared to the TiO2 nanoparticle-incorporated film, the antibacterial ability of Au-TiO2/sodium alginate composite film is improved approximately by 60% and 50% against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), respectively, in light conditions. The antibacterial property of the film arises from the increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the surface plasmonic resonance of Au nanoparticles. The degradable and antibacterial properties render the composite film of great application potential in food packaging industry.

Abstract:Food packaging is an essential line to defend against the intrusion of undesirable external factors to protect food. The antibacterial edible films are considered as promising food packaging due to their biodegradability, environmental friendliness, and safety. In this paper, recent research progress on antimicrobial edible films based on polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids is reviewed. It is worth noting that polysaccharides and proteins are the main substrates of antimicrobial edible films, while lipids are mainly plasticizers and carriers of active substances in composite films. For example, second-generation liposomes have been investigated as promising carriers for antimicrobial substances or other bioactive substances due to their excellent stability. Moreover, recent advances and future trends of antimicrobial edible films are then analyzed. Linking antimicrobial edible film materials to delivery systems for stable loading of bioactive substances is a promising future direction, such as nanoemulsion and microencapsulation technologies. In addition, a smart and active packaging that allows consumers to directly determine the freshness of food products without unwrapping the package has come into the limelight. Currently, pH-sensitive films and smart fluorescent "on–off" sensors for humidity have been investigated as smart and active packaging materials for monitoring the freshness of food products, which can be vigorously explored in the future.

Abstract:The function of chitosan film was reinforced by ZnO nanoparticles and antioxidant of bamboo leaves (AOB) for food packaging application. The results of structural characterization indicated the good compatibility among chitosan, ZnO nanoparticles and AOB. The chitosan film had the best mechanical strength and the highest light transmittance. The addition of AOB remarkably reduced the UV light transmittance and significantly enhanced the antioxidant activity of the films. Meanwhile, AOB and ZnO nanoparticles synergistically enhanced the antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Our results suggested that the chitosan/ZnO/AOB films could be applied as potential active packaging materials in food industry to extend the shelf-life of packaged food.

Abstract:Food bioactive packaging has received increasing attention from consumers and the food industry for its potential to reduce food waste and environmental issues. Several materials can be used to produce edible films/coats; however, bio-based, cost-effective, and sustainable coatings have gained a high reputation these days. For instance, Aloe vera gel (AV) is a promising bio-based material for edible coatings and films; therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the film-forming abilities of AV and Chitosan (CH) combination as a potential active food packaging material. The physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of formed films of various combinations were prepared at different concentrations, i.e., CH (0.5% w/v), AV (100%), CH:AV (75:25), and CH:AV (60:40). The results showed significant differences among all the prepared edible films wherein these differences were mainly on account of incorporating AV gel. The rheological and antioxidant properties of the formulations improved with the inclusion of AV gel. The films composed of CH:AV (60:40) positively affected the water solubility, thermal properties, and water vapour permeability of the edible films. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the films composed of CH:AV, (60:40) were amorphous and had smooth morphology. Further, the edible film solutions were applied to fresh figs (Ficus carica) to investigate their role in preserving fruits during storage. A significant reduction in microbial growth was found in coated fruits after 28 days of cold storage. The films composed of CH and AV showed overall improved results compared to the CH (0.5%, w/v). Therefore, the used formulations (CH:AV, 60:40) can form a sustainable film that has the potential to be utilized for fresh product preservation to maintain its quality and shelf life.

Abstract:Photodegradation and oxidation are major causes of the deterioration of food, resulting in darkening, off-flavors, and nutrient deficiency. To reduce this problem, novel functional polymeric materials are being developed to retain food's light sensitivity. Nanofillers are also used in a polymeric film to produce effective UV blockings and oxygen barrier coatings so that the degradation of the food can be delayed, thereby increasing the shelf life. For this purpose, polyvinyl alcohol coatings were prepared by the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles. Polyvinyl alcohol is a naturally excellent barrier against oxygen, and the addition of ZnO particles at the nanoscale size has demonstrated effective UV blocking capabilities. In this work, the hydrothermal technique is used to produce ZnO nanoparticles, and these produced particles are then incorporated into the polyvinyl alcohol to produce thin films. These films are characterized in terms of the compositional, macroscopic, microscopic, and optical properties via X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), as well as UV–VIS spectroscopy. ZnO nanoparticles at different concentrations were incorporated into the PVA solution, and the films were processed via the blade coating method. With the addition of ZnO, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of pure PVA was not altered and remained stable, and the lowest OTR was recorded as 0.65 cm3/m2·day·bar. Furthermore, the addition of ZnO increased the water contact angle (WCA) of PVA, and the highest WCA was recorded to be around more than 70°. Due to this, water permeability decreased. Additionally, PVA/ZnO films were highly flexible and bendable and maintained the OTR even after going through bending cycles of 20K. Furthermore, the addition of ZnO showed a significant UV blocking effect and blocked the rays below a wavelength of 380 nm. Finally, the optimized films were used for packaging applications, and it was observed that the packaged apple remained fresh and unoxidized for a longer period as compared with the piece of apple without packaging. Thus, based on these results, the PVA/ZnO films are ideally suited for packaging purposes and can effectively enhance the shelf life of food.

Abstract:Sodium alginate (SA) is widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and excellent film-forming properties. This article introduces a simple method for preparing uniform alginate-based packaging materials with exceptional properties for fruit preservation. The alginate was uniformly crosslinked by gradually releasing calcium ions triggered by the sustained hydrolysis of gluconolactone (GDL). A cinnamaldehyde (CA) emulsion, stabilized by xanthan without the use of traditional surfactants, was tightly incorporated into the alginate film to enhance its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV shielding properties. The alginate-based film effectively blocked ultraviolet rays in the range of 400-200 nm, while allowing for a visible light transmittance of up to 70 %. Additionally, it showed an increased water contact angle and decreased water vapor permeability. The alginate-based film was also employed in the preparation of coated paper through the commonly used coating process in the papermaking industry. The alginate-based material displayed excellent antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea, successfully extending the shelf life of strawberries to 7 days at room temperature. This low-cost and facile method has the potential to drive advancements in the food and biomedical fields by tightly incorporating active oil onto a wide range of biomacromolecule substrates.
Bioactive Edible Sodium Alginate Films Incorporated with Tannic Acid as Antimicrobial and Antioxidative Food Packaging

Abstract:Currently, biodegradable and functional food packaging materials have attracted more and more attention due to their potential advantages. Biopolymers are one of the promising materials used to produce biodegradable food packaging films, and sodium alginate (SA) is one of the most used polysaccharides. In this work, we explored a novel edible sodium alginate (SA)/tannic acid (TA) film as biodegradable active food packaging material. The impact of TA concentration on the UV light blocking ability, transparency, water vapor barrier ability, mechanical strength, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of the SA-TA films was comprehensively investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed that strong hydrogen bonding was the main intermolecular interaction between SA and TA. As TA concentration in the films increased, the water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased from 1.24 × 10−6 to 0.54 × 10−6 g/m/h/Pa, the DPPH radical scavenging activity increased from 0.008% to 89.02%. Moreover, the incorporation of TA effectively blocked UV light and elevated antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Overall, the SA films with TA exhibited better water vapor barrier ability, remarkable UV-light barrier ability and antioxidant activity while showing a slight decrease in light transmittance. These results indicated the potential application of TA as a functional additive agent for developing multifunctional food packaging materials.

Abstract:The applications of alginate derived from seaweed polysaccharide in food packaging are restricted due to their inherent deficient antibacterial, antioxidant and UV barrier properties. In this study, nitrogen-functionalized carbon dots (NCDs) with active functions (0.5–3 %) and layered clay (1 %) with barrier property were introduced to construct alginate based active films via solution casting method. The results showed that the synthesized spherical NCDs had a particle size of 2–3 nm, and the internal structure of NCDs was similar to graphene, with a large number of active groups (-NH 2 , -OH, etc.) on the surface. Infrared analysis revealed that NCDs could form strong hydrogen bonds with alginate matrix, which slowed down the deterioration of mechanical properties and reduced the surface wettability. With the addition of NCDs, active functions and surface hydrophobicity of the active films were enhanced significantly ( P < 0.05). When the amount of NCDs reached 3 %, UV barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the active films were increased by 50.0 %, 61.1 % and 70.1 %, respectively. The addition of NCDs could enhance the anti-browning ability of alginate based coatings and extend the shelf life of banana significantly. Therefore, a suitable amount of NCDs (1–2 %) and layered clay (1 %) can synergistically improve comprehensive performance of alginate based films and promote their food packaging application used as active films/inner coatings.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of pectin extracted from orange waste by acid hydrolysis and prepared Pectin/ hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)/ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) biofilm for food packaging applications. The pectin/HEC/ZnO biofilms were prepared in an aqueous solution at room temperature using solvent casting method and characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical properties, and water vapor permeability-WVP were evaluated. Moreover, its antimicrobial activity against Gram negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Salmonella enterica Typhimiurium) and two Gram positive bacteria ( Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus ), and also has antifungal activity against Candida albicans was assessed. The obtained results display that the water vapor permeability (WVP) indicated a reduction in permeability with increased ZnO concentration, with WVPs ranging from 2.55 × 10 −12 to 4.28 × 10 −12 gm/pas.m 2 , which indicates that our pectin/HEC/ZnO bionanocomposite biofilm could efficiently decrease moisture transfer, thereby potentially extending the shelf-life of packaged food products. Furthermore, the results showed enhanced tensile strength and flexibility in the biofilms with the addition of 1% ZnO nanoparticles from 1.2 to 2.6 MPa and 4.5 to 13 MPa respectively. The WVP indicated a reduction in permeability with increased ZnO concentration, with WVPs ranging from 2.55 × 10 −12 to 4.28 × 10 −12 gm/pas.m 2 . The antimicrobial activity against pathogens such as Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Salmonella enterica Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus , and Candida albicans was significant, with a 99.96% reduction in E. coli counts at a biofilm concentration of 200 mg/mL. Furthermore, the current study revealed that the synthesized bionanocomposite biofilms had excellent qualities such as transparency, flexibility, low cost, and being environmentally friendly. The pectin/HEC/ZnO bionanocomposite was found to be an ideal biofilm for food packaging due to its safety and affordability, which is able to prolong food shelf-life.

Abstract:In recent years, edible composite films have attracted more attention instead of plastic packaging in the field of food packaging. Combined with clove essential oil (CO), the edible composite film based on sodium alginate (SA) and Aloe vera gel (AG) was developed. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of SA, AG, and CO on the barrier and mechanical properties of the composite films and the impact of the edible composite film on the freshness of blueberry fruits. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on single factor experiments were used to get the optimum formula with the best property. The results showed that the optimal formula was SA 15.6 gL-1, AG 90 gL-1, and CO 10 gL-1, SA, AG, and CO had significant effect on the characteristics of the films, also, the crossed-linking action of SA and AG was further confirmed by characterization, while CO significantly influenced barrier and mechanical property and improved the antibacterial activity of the film. The composite film kept great hardness, less weight loss, more soluble solid, and more vitamin C of blueberries, proving the bacteriostatic activity of AG and CO. The results suggest that the edible composite film has an enormous potential in extending the shelf-life of blueberries with this formula.

Abstract:Polymers from Renewable Resources, Ahead of Print. Active packaging represents an innovative alternative to improve the quality of food and extend the shelf life of the product. The main aim of this research is to develop antibacterial films based on chitosan (Cs), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONps) to find a solution of food deterioration due to the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. ZnONps were synthesized by green chemistry using the leaves extract of Petroselinum crispum. The films were fabricated with 0; 0.5; and 1% w/v of ZnONps using different proportions of Cs: PVA by the casting method. The mechanical, physicochemical, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties were assessed. Moreover, the influence of the Cs/PVA/ZnONps films in the conservation of the Isabella grape was analyzed (pH, titratable acidity, weight loss, total soluble solids, and decay rate) and it was compared to commercial coating and uncoated grapes. Results showed the increase in the content of PVA improved the mechanical properties and increased the water absorption. Besides, Young's Module, and tensile strength of the films improved with ZnO nanoparticles addition. The antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposite films against Escherichia Coli was demonstrated. Finally, it was corroborated the nanocomposite films preserve the quality and extend the shelf life of Isabella grapes 6 days more than the commercial coating affirming their use in food packaging. To the best of our knowledge, no previous work related with the development of films based on Cs/PVA reinforced with ZnONPs has tested its application as fruits packaging, determining its effect on the ripening process through physic-chemical assays.
Development, characterization and functional properties of sodium alginate-based films incorporated with Schisandra chinensis extract-natamycin complex

Abstract:Because of the impact of petroleum-based polymers on environmental deterioration and the need for safe, efficient, and functional packaging films, a sodium alginate (SA)-based film incorporating a Schisandra chinensis extract (SCE)-natamycin (NA) complex was developed for the desired physical and functional properties. The incorporation of SCE-NA into SA-based films decreased the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), moisture content (MC), and hydrophilicity of the films and improved their opacity, elongation at break (EAB), and thermal stability. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that SA, SCE, and NA had positive interactions and compatibility. In addition, the antimicrobial activity analysis indicated that the SA-SCE-NA film-forming solutions had satisfactory antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , Saccharomyces cerevisiae , and Aspergillus niger . SA-based composite films have been used to coat cucumbers and blueberries to extend their shelf life. Compared to the neat SA film, the shelf life of cucumbers treated with the SA-SCE-NA film increased by 6 days compared to that in the untreated group at 28 °C, and the shelf life of blueberries increased by 5 days at 4 °C, revealing its potential utilization in food packaging.

Abstract:Antibacterial food packaging with slow and sustained release of antibacterial agents exerts a crucial role in ensuring food quality and safety. Herein, metal-phenolic networks based on epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and iron (Fe), as well as thyme essential oil nano-emulsion (TEON) were successfully incorporated into sodium alginate (SA) matrix to prepare SA-based films through solution casting method. The effects of EGCG/Fe and different concentrations of TEON on the morphology, structure, physical properties, and functional characteristics of SA-based films were systematically analyzed. Results showed that the addition of EGCG/Fe and TEON significantly enhanced the mechanical intensity, flexibility, thermal stability, UV shielding, water vapor barrier performance, and oxygen barrier ability of the SA-based films. In addition, the introduction of TEON made the SA-based films slow-release of thyme essential oil, which obviously enhanced the antioxidant and dynamic antimicrobial properties of the films. Ultimately, the SA-based film revealed an outstanding preservation effect on pork by significantly reducing the increase rate of pH value and total plate count of pork. This developed SA-based films loaded with EGCG/Fe and TEON were expected to become a potential antibacterial material with slow-release properties for food packaging applications.

The coefficient determination (R2) result obtained for TS against alginate, glycerol and maltodextrin is 81.05%, while for EB and T are 32.07% and 64.70% respectively. It showed that the addition of sodium alginate, glycerol and maltodextrin at different concentrations had significantly affected the TS but no effect on EB and T was observed. The optimization study of the film produces two conditions which are conditions 1 and 2. The optimum conditions parameter for condition 1 is a film with 3.0% alginate concentration, 1.0g/g of glycerol content, and 1.50g/g of maltodextrin content while condition 2 was 1.0% of alginate concentration, 1.0g/g of glycerol content and 0.0g/g maltodextrin content. The values of the TS obtained at the optimized condition were 4.75 MPa and 22.99 MPa which is lower than the predicted value of condition 1 (7.0 MPa) or the maximized TS at condition 2 respectively. The thickness value of edible films in this study had an average of 0.54 mm which was higher than the maximum standard thickness of edible films according to the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) which is 0.25 mm. Water Vapour Permeability (WVTR) study indicated that all alginate films in this study had a value higher than the JIS 1975 standard of WVTR for edible films which is at a maximum of 10 g/m2/24 hours. The natural colour from Clitoria Ternatea was successfully immobilized into the alginate-based film and the film become dark purple. Based on the result obtained, prediction equations for responses studied are adequate to describe the experimental data on tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness. However, further modifications are necessary for improvements in mechanical characteristics in the future.
Preparation and characterization of edible coating and film composed of sodium alginate/ylang-ylang oil/cellulose nanocrystals Pickering emulsion and its application to post-harvest control of mandarin (Citrus reticulata)

Abstract:Pickering emulsion, a novel technique that uses solid particles as emulsion stabilizers has attracted attention because of its long-term storage stability and good coalescence stability. This can help to prolong the shelf life of fresh produce. The poor water vapor barrier, ultraviolet (UV), mechanical, and antifungal capacities of alginate film limit its application in fruit preservation. In this study, alginate (Alg) films with improved water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical properties, and ultraviolet (UV) barrier were prepared with ylang-ylang oil (YYO) Pickering emulsion (PE). YYO was added as an antimicrobial agent. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as natural stabilizers to prepare YYO PE. The final coating comprised 1% Alg (alginate), Alg/0.24% CNCs, and Alg/0.5% YYO PE. The impacts of YYO-PE on the properties of Alg films were investigated, and their effects on post-harvest control of mandarins were evaluated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) was used to identify the components of YYO. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed an increase in the roughness of the films containing the Alg/YYO PE. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed no new interactions in the Alg/YYO PE films. Moisture content (MC) and thermal properties were lower for Alg/YYO-PE films. The Alg/YYO-PE coating lowered the weight loss (7.84 ± 1.76%) and inhibited (p < 0.05) the growth of Penicillium italicum (P. italicum) and Penicillium digitatum (P. digitatum). The inhibition percentages were 56.02% and 47.98%, respectively, for the inoculated mandarins. In conclusion, the Alg/YYO PE coating and film have the potential to be an eco-friendly active packaging material in the food sector.

Abstract:Consumers wanting safe and eco-friendly food packaging have led to better active packaging materials. Alginate is a polysaccharide extracted from seaweed and has the potential to be considered a promising material for packaging applications; however, its application is limited due to poor mechanical properties and high water vapor (WVP). The mechanical and barrier properties can be altered by adding or blending with other materials, such as the incorporation of bioactive compounds from onion peel extract (Allium Cepa). This study was designed to extract onion peel and test its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities; alginate-based film incorporated different concentrations of onion peel extract (12.5%, 25%, and 50%) (w/v) and determined its antioxidant or antimicrobial activity and physicochemical properties. Results demonstrated that the onion peel extract and alginate-based films containing onion peel extract show antioxidant activity; however, no antimicrobial activity was detected. When the concentration of onion peel extract (Allium Cepa) in alginate-based film increased, it significantly improved the alginate-based film's mechanical properties, colour, solubility, and biodegradability. However, the water vapour permeability was reduced by increasing the onion peel extract. In conclusion, adding onion peel extract improved the antioxidant activity, colour, mechanical strength, solubility, and biodegradability characteristics of alginate-based films compared to control. Hence, this film has the potential to be used as active packaging.

Abstract:A degradable and antibacterial sodium alginate film containing functional Au-TiO2 nanocomposites for food packaging was successfully developed. The Au-TiO2 nanocomposites are synthesized hydrothermally and mixed with the alginate solution to form the film by a casting method. The Au-TiO2 nanocomposites enable the film with excellent visible light absorption and transfer ability with the light absorption rang covering UV–visible wavelength (300–800 nm) and induce the increase of the film water contact angle from 40° to 74°, which contributes to the film shape stability. Furthermore, compared to the TiO2 nanoparticle-incorporated film, the antibacterial ability of Au-TiO2/sodium alginate composite film is improved approximately by 60% and 50% against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), respectively, in light conditions. The antibacterial property of the film arises from the increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the surface plasmonic resonance of Au nanoparticles. The degradable and antibacterial properties render the composite film of great application potential in food packaging industry.
