Abstract:Carbon dioxide emissions pose a severe threat to the global eco-system and human health, yet at the same time the exponential growth of Bitcoin trading, unsustainable mode of current economic development, and the low efficient energy usage have become burgeoning issues in emerging market economies. By applying advanced econometric techniques, this research empirically tests the dynamic impacts of Bitcoin trading, economic growth, and energy use on CO 2 emissions in the top 20 Bitcoin-trading emerging market economies from 2013 to 2020, highlighting results on the existence of cross-section dependence, slope heterogeneity, and unit roots in the panel data. Moreover, Bitcoin trading, economic growth, and energy use have a significantly positive effect on CO 2 emissions from a long-term perspective. Findings further show that CO 2 emissions have a bi-causal correlation with all three determinants. Relevant implications are offered as follows. For academic researchers, cross-section dependence and slope heterogeneity are important considerations, and ignoring them would lead to significantly biased inferences. Emerging market governments should introduce eco-friendly technology for Bitcoin trading, modify the present extensive mode of economic growth, and guard against unsustainable energy consumption.

Abstract:There is an urgent need to control global warming caused by humans to achieve a sustainable future. CO2 levels are rising steadily, and while countries worldwide are actively moving toward the sustainability goals proposed during the Paris Agreement in 2015, we are still a long way to go from achieving a sustainable mode of global operation. The increased popularity of cryptocurrencies since the introduction of Bitcoin in 2009 has been accompanied by an increasing trend in greenhouse gas emissions and high electrical energy consumption. Popular energy tracking studies (e.g., Digiconomist and the Cambridge Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index (CBECI)) have estimated energy consumption ranges from 29.96 TWh to 135.12 TWh and 26.41 TWh to 176.98 TWh, respectively for Bitcoin as of July 2021, which are equivalent to the energy consumption of countries such as Sweden and Thailand. The latest estimate by Digiconomist on carbon footprints shows a 64.18 MtCO2 emission by Bitcoin as of July 2021, close to the emissions by Greece and Oman. This review compiles estimates made by various studies from 2018 to 2021. We compare the energy consumption and carbon footprints of these cryptocurrencies with countries around the world and centralized transaction methods such as Visa. We identify the problems associated with cryptocurrencies and propose solutions that can help reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprints. Finally, we present case studies on cryptocurrency networks, namely, Ethereum 2.0 and Pi Network, with a discussion on how they can solve some of the challenges we have identified.

Do bitcoin electricity consumption and carbon footprint exhibit random walk and bubbles? Analysis with policy implications

Abstract:One of the main current focuses of global economies and decision-makers is the efficiency of energy utilization in cryptocurrency mining and trading, along with the reduction of associated carbon emissions. Understanding the pattern of Bitcoin's energy consumption and its bubble frequency can greatly enhance policy analysis and decision-making for energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction. This research aims to assess the validity of the random walk hypothesis for Bitcoin's electricity consumption and carbon footprint. We employed both traditional methods (ADF and KPSS) and recently proposed unit root techniques that account for structural breaks and non-linearity in the data series. Our analysis covers daily data from July 2010 to December 2021. The empirical results revealed that traditional unit root techniques did not confirm the stationarity of both bitcoin's electricity consumption and carbon footprint. However, novel structural break (SB) and linearity tests conducted enabled us to discover five SB episodes between 2012 and 2020 and non-linearity of the variables, which informed our application of the newly developed non-linear unit root tests with structural breaks. With the new methods, the results indicated stationarity after accommodating the SB and non-linearity. Furthermore, based on Phillips and Shi (2019)'s test, we identified certain bubble episodes in the bitcoin energy and carbon variables between 2013 and 2021. The major drivers of the bubbles in bitcoin energy consumption and carbon footprint are variables relating to the bitcoin and financial markets activities and risks, including the global economic and political risks. The study's conclusion based on the above findings informs several policy implications drawn for energy and environmental management including the encouragement of green investments in cryptocurrency mining and trading.

Abstract:Bitcoin mining places huge demands on energy systems and increases carbon emissions, which sequentially adds to the impact of climate change. This study investigates the impact of a series of factors on the Bitcoin carbon footprint (BCF). The overall effect of USD on reducing BCF is greater than that of stocks, bonds, and gold. The negative impacts of coal and natural gas on BCF are more pronounced at lower BCF quantiles, whereas renewable energy has almost entirely negative effects. Moreover, the uncertainty of economic and climate policies, energy and stock markets (EPU, CPU, EUI and VIX), as well as the climate physical risk index (CPR) have negative effects on BCF in most quantiles, especially in the lower and higher quantiles.

Abstract:Bitcoin, a global financial asset, surpassed one trillion USD in November 2021, but its environmental impact may cause a 2 °C temperature rise by 2050. Using causal and connectedness analysis, we uncover non-linear relationships between bitcoin's energy consumption, price, and the Crypto Volatility Index. This study uses 1458 daily observations from several databases from March 31, 2019, to March 30, 2023. The phenomenon was analyzed using the theory of production and value investing theory. While the relationship between bitcoin-based electricity consumption and crypto market volatility is bidirectional, Granger causality tests reveal that bitcoin prices Granger-cause electricity consumption, but the converse is not true. Regarding Diebold-Yilmaz connectedness, the price of bitcoin acts as a net contributor, while bitcoin-based electricity consumption and crypto market volatility act as net receivers of spillover from bitcoin price. Our findings contrast with the traditional theory of production, where cost is supposed to determine price, and we show that some bitcoin miners continue operating according to the value investing theory despite suffering financial losses. Limited discussions around bitcoin pricing and its significant expense-that is bitcoin's electricity consumption-indicate the need to explore this relationship. Policymakers, green investors, and others may find the results relevant to building an efficient, environmentally friendly framework and creating much-required innovative regulations.

Abstract:The carbon footprint of Bitcoin has drawn wide attention, but Bitcoin's long-term impact on the climate remains uncertain. Here we present a framework to overcome uncertainties in previous estimates and project Bitcoin's electricity consumption and carbon footprint in the long term. If we assume Bitcoin's market capitalization grows in line with the one of gold, we find that the annual electricity consumption of Bitcoin may increase from 60 to 400 TWh between 2020 and 2100. The future carbon footprint of Bitcoin strongly depends on the decarbonization pathway of the electricity sector. If the electricity sector achieves carbon neutrality by 2050, Bitcoin's carbon footprint has peaked already. However, in the business-as-usual scenario, emissions sum up to 2 gigatons until 2100, an amount comparable to 7% of global emissions in 2019. The Bitcoin price spike at the end of 2020 shows, however, that progressive development of market capitalization could yield an electricity consumption of more than 100 TWh already in 2021, and lead to cumulative emissions of over 5 gigatons by 2100. Therefore, we also discuss policy instruments to reduce Bitcoin's future carbon footprint.

Abstract:The annual electricity consumption of cryptocurrency transactions has grown substantially in recent years, partially driven by the increasing difficulty in mining, but also driven by the large number of new market participants that have been attracted by the elevated prices of this developing financial asset. Total carbon production from mining now likely exceeds that generated by individual developed nations. This is now a prevailing and accepted feature in cryptocurrency markets, however unsustainable it may be. This paper investigates as to how Bitcoin's price volatility and the underlying dynamics of cryptocurrency mining characteristics affect underlying energy markets and utilities companies. Further analysis of potential side-effects within the market for Exchange Traded Funds are considered. The results show a sustained and significant influence of cryptocurrency energy-usage on the performance of some companies in the energy sector as separated by jurisdiction, emphasising the importance of further assessment of environmental impacts of cryptocurrency growth. Robustness testing presents evidence that dynamic correlations peaked during the sharp Bitcoin price appreciation of late-2017 as investors re-evaluated how this increased energy usage would influence the profitability of utility companies.

Abstract:Cryptocurrencies are gaining more popularity due to their security, making counterfeits impossible. However, these digital currencies have been criticized for creating a large carbon footprint due to their algorithmic complexity and decentralized system design for proof of work and mining. We hypothesize that the carbon footprint of cryptocurrency transactions has a higher dependency on carbon-rich fuel sources than green or renewable fuel sources. We provide a machine learning framework to model such transactions and correlate them with the electricity generation patterns to estimate and analyze their carbon cost.

Abstract:A nation cannot sustain a highly productive and efficient population without smart cities. Due to their significant reliance on digital technologies, these cities require a high level of cybercrime protection. Cryptocurrencies have gained significant attention due to their secure and reliable infrastructure. The decentralised cryptocurrency operates in a trust-less environment known as the blockchain, where each network participant has a ledger copy of all transactions. Blockchain technology employs a proven consensus mechanism without requiring establishment of a central authority. But the consensus mechanism requires miner to solve a cryptographic problem by generating random hashes until one of them matches the desired one. This procedure is energy-intensive, and when thousands of miners repeat it to verify a single transaction, a substantial amount of electricity is consumed. Moreover, electricity produces a significant amount of carbon footprint. Patch methodology utilises the data of all hashes created per year and the efficiency of mining hardware over a 10-year period to calculate the Bitcoins energy consumption. Due to a large number of unknown and uncertain factors involved, it is difficult to precisely calculate a single value for electricity consumption and carbon footprint as reported by Patch methodology. The proposed method extends the Patch methodology by adding a maximum and minimum limit to the hardware efficiency as well as the sources of power generation, which can help refine estimates of electricity consumption and carbon emissions for a more accurate picture. Using the proposed methodology, it was estimated that Bitcoin consumed between 38.495 and 120.72 terawatt hours of electricity in 2021 and released between 2.12 and 45.37 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. To address the issue of excessive energy consumption and carbon emissions, a significant number of individual miners and mining pools are relocating to energy-intensive regions, such as aluminium mining sites that rely on hydroelectricity for energy generation.

Abstract:Executing a single Bitcoin transaction equates approximately to the greenhouse gas emissions of a moderate-sized electric or gasoline engine sedan vehicle traveling between 1600 and 2600 km. This research undertakes an examination of Bitcoin's real climate problem and presents a novel framework and an in-depth analysis of Bitcoin mining's carbon footprints based on country-specific, per transaction, and per total hashes required for mining a block. In addition, it maps the carbon footprints of global supply chains inherent in Bitcoin mining operations. We propose a life cycle assessment-based multination carbon footprint accounting method, allowing us to map both direct and indirect carbon footprints across various regional and global supply chain sectors. The findings show that approximately 50% of global emissions from Bitcoin mining are confined within the territorial boundaries of the USA. Meanwhile, China, despite its regulatory restrictions on mining, continues to play a significant role as both a major contributor to global mining emissions and a leading manufacturer and supplier of Bitcoin mining equipment. The globalized nature of Bitcoin's supply chain suggests that localized efforts to reduce carbon emissions may fall short of addressing the full scope of the problem. For instance, while Norway's domestic emissions from Bitcoin mining are low due to its use of renewable energy, a significant share of its emissions stems from its global supply chain, particularly from China. The findings underscore the necessity for carbon footprint reduction policies and management strategies that transcend national borders, emphasizing the importance of accounting for emissions embedded in global trade and supply chains. This research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable cryptocurrency practices by highlighting the imperative need of a globally coordinated approach to carbon footprint management in Bitcoin mining.

Abstract:The energy consumption and related carbon emissions of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are subject to extensive discussion in public, academia, and industry. As cryptocurrencies continue their journey into mainstream finance, incentives to participate in the networks and consume energy to do so remain significant. First guidance on how to allocate the carbon footprint of the Bitcoin network to single investors exist, however a holistic framework capturing a wider range of cryptocurrencies and tokens remains absent. This white paper explores different approaches of how to allocate emissions caused by cryptocurrencies and tokens. Based on our analysis of the strengths and limitations of potential approaches, we propose a framework that combines key drivers of emissions in Proof of Work and Proof of Stake networks.

Abstract:The energy consumption and carbon footprint of cryptocurrencies have always been a popular topic. However, most of the existing studies only focus on one cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, and there is a lack of long-term monitoring studies that summarize all cryptocurrencies. By constructing a time series hash rate/power model, this research obtained the 10-year time series data on energy consumption dataset of global top-25 cryptocurrencies for the first time. Both the temporal coverage and the spatiotemporal resolution of the data exceed previous studies. The results show that Bitcoin’s power consumption only accounts for 58% of the top-25 cryptocurrencies. After China bans cryptocurrencies, the conservative change in global CO2 emissions from 2020 will be between −0.4% and 4.4%, and Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan are likely to become areas of rapid growth in carbon emissions from cryptocurrencies.

Abstract:When compared to traditional fiat currencies, cryptocurrencies represent a small, but growing, fraction of financial transactions. The rapid growth of cryptocurrencies has raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of this energy-intensive type of currency. In this study, water and carbon footprints associated with cryptocurrencies are assessed. These environmental footprints are then compared to the water and carbon footprints associated with conventional currencies, which is a novelty of this study. A spatially refined, bottom-up analysis of the most energy-intensive aspects of each financial system is used in the comparison of these systems. Specifically, the energy use for printing money, bank branches, automated teller machines (ATM), and cashless transactions is evaluated at the country level and compared to the energy use of crypto mining around the world. Cryptocurrencies' electricity use of 236 × 10 6 MW h (MWh) in 2021 surpassed that of the conventional transaction system, despite cryptocurrencies representing only 0.5% of global cashless financial transactions. In terms of its water footprint, cryptocurrencies have an annual water consumption of 3670 × 10 6 cubic meters (m 3 ). Cryptocurrencies' water footprint is more than double that of conventional currencies because crypto mining takes place in countries with higher water intensities for electricity. Crypto mining activities are also estimated to result in almost 139 × 10 6 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 -eq) of global greenhouse gas emissions. While cryptocurrencies represent a small percentage of financial transactions, their environmental impact is much larger than the conventional financial transaction system. This study shows how regulatory changes, such as the 2021 crypto mining ban in China, and crypto mining location can have implications on the environmental footprint associated with cryptocurrency.

Abstract:With this report we communicate the results of a method for the fractionation of the isoenzymes of gamma-GT in human serum based on a modified technique of Hetland et al., using cellulosa acetate. With this method we observed the appearance of a complex of four band representing: gamma-GT1 = prealbumin-albumin, gamma-GT3 = alpha 1-globulin, gamma-GT3 = alpha 2-globulin, gamma-GT4 = beta-globulin. It has been noted that the gamma-GT2 is the only fraction which constantly appears. This isoenzyme also corresponds to the form, fisiologically present in serum and is presumably preduced in the cells of the bileduct. In the results we observed the appearance of gamma-GT1 only in the course of processes involving certainly cholestasis. This fraction was once reported by other AA., but it has an unknown origin. It was not possible to correlate the appearance of the fractions gamma-GT3 and gamma-GT4 with any specific pathology alterations even though Hetland et al. have affirmed that the gamma-GT3 band derives from hepatic parenchyma.
Green gold or carbon beast? Assessing the environmental implications of cryptocurrency trading on clean water management and carbon emission SDGs

Abstract:This study addresses the ongoing debate concerning the environmental implications of cryptocurrencies. Specifically, it investigates the impact of Bitcoin trading volume on water and sanitation (Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6) and climate action (SDG 13). The research employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) panel data analysis to examine these relationships using a sample of 32 countries with available Bitcoin trading volume data from 2013 to 2020. The findings indicate that Bitcoin trading significantly and positively impacts progress towards SDG 6, suggesting potential benefits for water and sanitation initiatives. However, the study reveals a significant negative impact of higher Bitcoin trading volume on increased carbon emissions, underscoring the environmental costs associated with cryptocurrency activities. Similar impacts are observed for gold reserves, as their mining necessitates substantial energy consumption. These results highlight the need to regulate cryptocurrency trading and promote voluntary sustainable practices, particularly given the disparities between developed and emerging markets based on their governance frameworks. Additionally, the study considers the disparities between countries based on technology exports and economic policy uncertainty as influential determinants. The study's results emphasize the importance of proactive measures to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of cryptocurrencies. While cryptocurrencies offer significant economic returns, their early adoption stage necessitates further investigation into environmentally friendly approaches. Potential strategies include directing financial returns from cryptocurrencies towards alternative energy projects and supporting other environmental SDGs, thereby fostering a positive impact on the overall ecosystem. The study's implications extend to policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders, advocating for comprehensive and collaborative efforts to integrate sustainability into the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency market. Abstract:Cryptocurrencies are in the center of attention of investors, public authorities and researchers, but the interest has shifted from purely financial aspects regarding the way of trading, lack of regulation and supervision of transactions, volatility, correlation with other assets to aspects related to sustainability taking in account the high energy consumption generated by the mining process and the impact on environmental pollution. Bitcoin was chosen for the research considering the dominance that this financial asset has on the cryptocurrency market and its position as alpha currency.The article focuses on the relationship between Bitcoin transactions and energy consumption, for period 1st January 2019—31st of May 2022, this interval having significant price movements. The authors made a prediction of the Bitcoin price using a complex meta-model and SQL analytical functions. The analysis is based on 15 fundamental variables in order to forecast the price: Bitcoin data (prices and volume), electricity price and traded quantity on day-ahead market (DAM), gas price and traded quantity on DAM, inflation in EU, EU-ETS emissions certificates and oil prices. The study reveals the importance of the relationship Bitcoin—energy—carbon emissions, elements that capture the impact of the mining process on the environment from the perspective of energy consumption. Investors on the Bitcoin market must be aware not only of the importance of financial aspects on the price of cryptocurrencies (inflation, demand, offer), but also of other elements related to the evolution of energy prices (electricity, oil, gas, renewable energy) and the evolution of emissions certificates prices. Considering the promotion of the principles of sustainable development on the capital market, portfolio investors have become increasingly attentive to the social and environmental performance of financial assets. This study aims to make financial market players aware of the non-financial implications of their transactions. In addition, the energy transition and the reconfiguration of the energy mix are elements of impact on the cryptocurrency market through the technical levers involved in the mining process.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in understanding the energy and environmental footprint of digital currencies, specifically in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. These cryptocurrencies are operated by a geographically distributed network of computing nodes, making it hard to accurately estimate their energy consumption. Existing studies, both in academia and industry, attempt to model the cryptocurrencies energy consumption often based on a number of assumptions for instance about the hardware in use or geographic distribution of the computing nodes. A number of these studies has already been widely criticized for their design choices and subsequent over or under-estimation of the energy use. In this study, we evaluate the reliability of prior models and estimates by leveraging existing scientific literature from fields cognizant of blockchain such as social energy sciences and information systems. We first design a quality assessment framework based on existing research, we then conduct a systematic literature review examining scientific and non-academic literature demonstrating common issues and potential avenues of addressing these issues. Our goal with this article is to to advance the field by promoting scientific rigor in studies focusing on Blockchain's energy footprint. To that end, we provide a novel set of codes of conduct for the five most widely used research methodologies: quantitative energy modeling, literature reviews, data analysis \& statistics, case studies, and experiments. We envision that these codes of conduct would assist in standardizing the design and assessment of studies focusing on blockchain-based systems' energy and environmental footprint.

Abstract:This research aimed to investigate the relationship between climate policy uncertainty (CPU), clean energy (ENERGY), carbon emission allowance prices (CARBON), and Bitcoin returns (BTC) for the period from August 2012 to August 2022. The empirical analysis strategies utilized in this study included the Fourier Bootstrap ARDL long-term coefficient estimator, the Fourier Granger Causality, and the Fourier Toda–Yamamoto Causality methods. Following the confirmation of cointegration among the variables, we observed a positive relationship between BTC and CARBON, a positive relationship between BTC and CPU, and a negative relationship between BTC and ENERGY. In terms of causal associations, we identified one-way causality running from CARBON to BTC, BTC to CPU, and BTC to the ENERGY variable. The study underscores the potential benefits and revenue opportunities for investors seeking diversified investment strategies in light of climate change concerns. Furthermore, it suggests actionable strategies for policymakers, such as implementing carbon taxes and educational campaigns, to foster a transition towards clean energy sources within the cryptocurrency mining sector and thereby mitigate environmental impacts.

A Cradle-to-Gate Life Cycle Analysis of Bitcoin Mining Equipment Using Sphera LCA and ecoinvent Databases

Abstract:Bitcoin mining is regularly pointed out for its massive energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions, hence contributing significantly to climate change. However, most studies ignore the environmental impacts of producing mining equipment, which is problematic given the short lifespan of such highly specific hardware. In this study, we perform a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) of dedicated Bitcoin mining equipment, considering their specific architecture. Our results show that the application-specific integrated circuit designed for Bitcoin mining is the main contributor to production-related impacts. This observation applies to most impact categories, including the global warming potential. In addition, this finding stresses out the necessity to carefully consider the specificity of the hardware. By comparing these results with several usage scenarios, we also demonstrate that the impacts of producing this type of equipment can be significant (up to 80% of the total life cycle impacts), depending on the sources of electricity supply for the use phase. Therefore, we highlight the need to consider the production phase when assessing the environmental impacts of Bitcoin mining hardware. To test the validity of our results, we use the Sphera LCA and ecoinvent databases for the background modeling of our system. Surprisingly, it leads to results with variations of up to 4 orders of magnitude for toxicity-related indicators, despite using the same foreground modeling. This database mismatch phenomenon, already identified in previous studies, calls for better understanding, consideration and discussion of environmental impacts in the field of electronics, going well beyond climate change indicators.
