Abstract:Novel cyanine dyes (Sqb and Cyb3) with carboxylbenzyl group and different methine chains as solar cell sensitizers were synthesized and the photoelectrochemical behaviors of the TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode sensitized by them were investigated. The results show that Isc (2.76mA/cm2), monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) (46%) and η (1.7%) of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Sqb were higher than that of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Cyb3 when TiO2 nanostructured porous film was 6.5μm thick and was sensitized for 6h and 4h, respectively. The excited state level of these dyes matches the conductive band edge of TiO2 nanoparticles. Therefore, the sensitization of the dyes can increase the photocurrent density of TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode.
Enhance the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells by co-sensitization of 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridine and N719

Abstract:Three organic dyes 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines [2,6-(2,6-R2C6H2N=CMe)(2)]C5H3N (R = methyl, ethyl, isopropyl) (named DM, DE and DP, respectively) were synthesized and assembled onto nanocrystalline TiO2 film to prepare 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridine/N719 co-sensitized photoelectrodes for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs) applications, and their photoelectrochemical performances were studied. In each of the three composite electrodes, the aggregation of N719 was alleviated and its spectra response was enhanced by the 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridines in region of 400 to 750 nm, and the total resistance of DSSCs was decreased after co-sensitizing with 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridine, all of which facilitate to improve efficiency of DSSCs. The optimized cell which was co-sensitized with DM gave a short circuit current density of 16.57 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.72 V and a fill factor of 0.59 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.00% under standard global AM1.5 solar irradiation conditions, which is 28.91% higher than that for DSSCs only sensitized by N719 (5.43%). The incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, surface photovoltage spectroscopy and UV-visible adsorption spectra were used to analyze their photoelectrochemical performances, and X-ray single-crystal structural analysis was used to analyze the structures of 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines.
Enhancing dye-sensitized solar cells efficiency through organic dyes-sensitized holmium-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites blended with P3HT

Abstract:The pursuit of sustainable energy solutions has spurred innovation in photovoltaic technology, with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) emerging as promising contenders. This study presents a novel approach leveraging holmium-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites sensitized with organic dyes, Arsenazo-III, carminic acid, and dithizone, blended with poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Through meticulous characterization and analysis, key parameters including short-circuit current density (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor (FF), and overall percent efficiency (%) were scrutinized to evaluate photovoltaic performance comprehensively. Absorption spectra analysis facilitated the calculation of band gaps, revealing a significant reduction from 3.10 eV in pure Titania (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles to 2.72 eV upon doping with Holmium and coupling with SnO 2 . Notably, Arsenazo-III dye-sensitized holmium-doped TiO 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites exhibited highest power conversion efficiency, achieving a promising efficiency of 2.10 %, which marked a significant improvement over the reference device (0.82 %). This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of holmium dopant incorporation and SnO 2 interaction, enhancing light responsiveness. The findings not only validate the efficacy of nanohybrid assemblies but also contribute valuable insights to solar cell technology advancement.

Enhanced Efficiency of Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Using Eu Doped TiO2-ZrO2 Nanocomposite

Abstract:Background: Hydrothermal method was used to prepare TiO2-ZrO2 and Eu doped TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposites for dye sensitized solar cell app lication. Methods: X-ray diffraction was used to study the structural properties of prepared samples. Anatase and Rutile phases of TiO2 and Monoclinic and tetragonal phases of ZrO2 have been detected from XRD in prepared samples. The crystallite size of prepared samples lies between 6 to 18 nm. Absorption edge has been shifted to the longer wavelength region. The optical bandgap of TiO2-ZrO2 (2.15 eV) and Eu doped TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposites (2.03 eV) have been calculated using Tauc's plot. A decrease in bandgap compared to pure TiO2 has been observed. The increased refractive index has been determined from UV -Visible spectra. Results: Because of the high refractive index photons can stay for longer period of time inside the material and then they can be used to generate electrons in dye sensitized solar cell. An attempt was made to prepare an inexpensive dye sensitized solar cell by replacing synthetic organic dye with natural dye (pomegranate juice) and platinum coated counter electrode by carbon coated electrode. The improvement in efficiency has been recorded for prepared samples and it has been found to be 0.71%, 1.97% and 6.25% for TiO2, TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposite and Eu doped TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposite respectively. Conclusion: A simple and cost-effective DSSC prepared by materials is capable of producing a good amount photocurrent.

Abstract:Herein, we present a novel blended solid polymer electrolyte system composed of polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-co-HFP) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with the addition of phenothiazine (PZ) as an additive and iodide/triiodide (I - /I 3 - ) as a redox couple in nanocrystalline TiO 2 dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The characterization of the blended solid polymer electrolyte was conducted using techniques such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, and current-voltage (I-V) measurements. Our analyses revealed a decrease in the degree of crystallinity in PVDF-co-HFP/PMMA-based blended solid polymer electrolytes due to the incorporation of PZ, as observed through XRD, FTIR, and SEM. The electrical conductivity of the optimized solid polymer electrolyte film was determined using complex impedance spectroscopy, showing a maximum ionic conductivity value of 3.2 × 10 -7 Scm -1 at ambient temperature (298 K). DSSCs based on nanocrystalline TiO 2 were fabricated, and the cell parameters, including short-circuit current density (J sc ), open-circuit voltage (V oc ), fill factor (ff), and photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency (η), were evaluated. The DSSC fabricated with the polymer electrolyte exhibited values of 9.3 mA/cm 2 , 800 mV, 0.56, and 5.2% for J sc , Voc, ff, and η, respectively, under 80 mW/cm 2 at AM 1.5 simulated solar irradiation.

Abstract:Poly(3, 4-ethylendioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) mixed with TiO2 nanoparticles (PEDOT:PSS/TiO2) was used as a catalyst for tri-iodide reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells based on natural photosensitizers. A PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 film was coated on a conductive glass substrate by the spin coating method. The solar cells were fabricated, having the PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 film as a counter electrode and Pomegranate juice dye-sensitized TiO2 as an anode. The morphology of PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 films was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was employed to characterize the catalytic activity of the PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 film. Based on the analysis of CV, the enhancements for the electrochemical and photochemical performance of the PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 electrode are attributed to the fact that the dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles in the PEDOT:PSS matrix provide an improved catalytic activity and a facilitated diffusion for tri-iodide ions. The energy conversion efficiency is significantly improved after TiO2 nanoparticle incorporation. This improvement might be attributed to an increase in the counter electrode catalytic activity. The highest efficiency of 0.73% was obtained by using 100 nm TiO2 nanoparticles in the counter electrode.

Abstract:TiO2-ZrO2 and Zn doped TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal method for dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application. The structural and optical properties were investigated by X –ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Visible spectroscopy respectively. XRD results revealed the formation of material in nano size. The average crystallite size is 22.32 nm, 17.41 nm and 6.31 nm for TiO2, TiO2-ZrO2 and Zn doped TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposites respectively. The optical bandgap varies from 2.04 eV to 3.75 eV. Dye sensitized solar cells were fabricated using the prepared material. Pomegranate juice was used as a sensitizer and graphite coated conducting glass plate was used as counter electrode. The I – V characteristics were recorded to measure photo response of DSSC. Photovoltaic parameter like open circuit voltage, power conversion efficiency, and fill factor were evaluated for fabricated solar cell. The power conversion efficiency of DSSC fabricated with TiO2, TiO2-ZrO2 and Zn doped TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposites were found 0.71%, 1.97% and 4.58% respectively.

Abstract:Engineering new photoanode materials to substantially improve the efficiency of natural dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC-Ns) is a significant challenge in the field of DSSC-Ns. This study utilizes the doctor blade technique to develop novel photoanode materials based on mixtures with different proportions of TiO2 Hombikat UV100 and TiO2 P25, two nanometric powders with different grain sizes. The fabricated films were studied by X-ray diffraction, which revealed a dominant anatase phase in the structure, as was corroborated by Raman spectroscopy. The crystallite size of the materials was determined using the Scherrer method. Using optical measurements, we estimated the bandgap energy (Eg) of the photoanodes that varied in the samples at around 3 eV. The assembled solar cells demonstrated a significant efficiency of 4.87% in the TiO2 Hombikat UV100/TiO2 P25 sample with the proportion of 50–50% (HP50) of blended photoanode. This sample device exhibited a fill factor of 50.41%, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.65 V, and a current density of 14.75 mA/cm2 for an active surface area of 0.19 cm2. The HP50 sample constituted highly efficient DSSC-Ns and photoanodes with lower open-circuit voltage in the series, while HP40 developed a Voc of 0.73 V, and HP30 developed a Voc of 0.70 V.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) remain a promising technology for clean energy conversion due to their low cost, simple manufacturing, and high scalability. However, to keep these devices competitive against other photovoltaics like organic (OSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs), it is necessary to enhance their efficiency. These improvements can be achieved by optimizing the charge transport and non-radiative carrier recombination within the operating device. Here, we show the design, fabrication, and subsequent characterization of Ti3C2T x MXene/TiO2 nanocomposite hybrid photoanodes, supported by computational modeling. Ti3C2T x MXene/TiO2 hybrid photoanodes containing 0.050, 0.075, and 0.100 wt % two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2T x flakes were prepared and investigated. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the device is found to be enhanced by 20% when only 0.075 wt % Ti3C2T x was added to TiO2 due to the increase of electron transport in the photoanode. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the MXene–TiO2 interface indicate that the anatase potential is lowered, thus increasing the energy difference between the conduction bands of the N719 dye and the nanocomposite and favoring the migration of electrons toward the output terminal. Moreover, DFT results suggest a better separation of the photocarriers at the nanocomposite–N719 interface, which is supported by the measurement of longer electron lifetimes in the photoanode. These features demonstrate that the introduction of Ti3C2T x into the photoanode is relevant to promote the energy-to-current conversion of DSCCs. Future approaches shall focus on the implementation of different 2D MXene structures to further improve the performance of these class of materials for direct applications in photovoltaic devices and photochemistry.

Bifunctional Single-Crystalline Rutile Nanorod Decorated Heterostructural Photoanodes For Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel heterostructural TiO(2) nanocomposite, which consists of single-crystalline rutile TiO(2) nanorod decorated Degussa P25 nanoparticles, has been fabricated through a facile acidic hydrothermal method and successfully applied as the photoanodes for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells. The morphology, crystal structure, specific surface area and pore size distribution of the obtained nanocomposite were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction patterns (SAED) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. Under standard illumination conditions (AM 1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)), devices with these hybrid anodes exhibited considerably enhanced photocurrent density and overall conversion efficiency in comparison with that of the commercial Degussa P25 electrodes, which can be partially attributed to the light scattering effect in the long-wavelength region as evidenced from the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) response and the diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. More importantly, devices employing these hybrid anodes have demonstrated extended electron lifetimes and larger electron diffusion coefficient as validated by the intensity-modulated photocurrent/photovoltage spectroscopy measurements, which can be mainly ascribed to the fast electron transport and collection superiority of the single-crystalline nanorods.
Direct Z-scheme heterojunction impregnated MoS2–NiO–CuO nanohybrid for efficient photocatalyst and dye-sensitized solar cell

Abstract:In this present work, the preparation of ternary MoS 2 –NiO–CuO nanohybrid by a facile hydrothermal process for photocatalytic and photovoltaic performance is presented. The prepared nanomaterials were confirmed by physio-chemical characterization. The nanosphere morphology was confirmed by electron microscopy techniques for the MoS 2 –NiO–CuO nanohybrid. The MoS 2 –NiO–CuO nanohybrid demonstrated enhanced crystal violet (CV) dye photodegradation which increased from 50 to 95% at 80 min; The degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye increased from 56 to 93% at 100 min under UV–visible light irradiation. The trapping experiment was carried out using different solvents for active species and the Z-Scheme photocatalytic mechanism was discussed in detail. Additionally, a batch series of stability experiments were carried out to determine the photostability of materials, and the results suggest that the MoS 2 –NiO–CuO nanohybrid is more stable even after four continuous cycles of photocatalytic activity. The MoS 2 –NiO–CuO nanohybrid delivers photoconversion efficiency (4.92%) explored efficacy is 3.8 times higher than the bare MoS 2 (1.27%). The overall results indicated that the MoS 2 –NiO–CuO nanohybrid nanostructure could be a potential candidate to be used to improve photocatalytic performance and DSSC solar cell applications as well.

Enhancement of power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells by co-sensitization of zinc-porphyrin and thiocyanate-free ruthenium(ii)-terpyridine dyes and graphene modified TiO2 photoanode

Abstract:A combination of a meso substituted zinc-porphyrin with two pyridyl groups and two benzoate groups at cis positions to each other (POR) with a mononuclear ruthenium(II) complex containing a 2,6-bis(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine ligand and a carboxylic acid functionalized terpyridine ligand (SPS-G3) has been used as co-sensitizing system for the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The POR/SPS-G3 co-sensitized solar cell with a TiO2 photoanode displays enhanced short circuit current, open circuit voltage, and fill factor values (Jsc = 16.18 mA cm−2, Voc = 0.64 V, FF = 0.71, respectively), resulting in an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.35%, which is superior to that for the DSSCs based on the individual dyes POR and SPS-G3. This is attributed to the improved light harvesting efficiency of the POR/SPS-G3 co-sensitizing system, which is evidenced by the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) spectrum of the co-sensitized solar cell. Further improvement of the PCE value of the co-sensitized solar cell (up to 8.15%) has been achieved by using a graphene modified TiO2 (G-TiO2) photoanode, instead of a pure TiO2 photoanode. Based on dark current measurements and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), the increased PCE value of the solar cell with the G-TiO2 photoanode can be attributed to suppression of charge recombination at the photoanode/dye/electrolyte interface and enhancement of electron transport in the photoanode. These results are in accordance with the longer electron lifetime exhibited by the G-TiO2 photoanode.

Abstract:The amino substituted 1,4-naphthoquinone photosensitizers, viz; BrA5; 2-bromo-3-(pentylamino)naphthalene-1,4-dione, BrA6; 2-bromo-3-(hexylamino)naphthalene-1,4-dione, BrA7; 2-bromo-3-(heptylamino)naphthalene-1,4-dione, BrA8; 2-bromo-3-(octylamino)naphthalene-1,4-dione, have been synthesized from 2,3-dibromonaphthalene-1,4-dione. These photosensitizers were employed for the first time in TiO 2 NG-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The TiO 2 nanograin (TiO 2 NG) compact layer was prepared using chemical bath deposition to reduce the electron recombination. The porous layer of TiO 2 NG was deposited using the doctor blade method, followed by calcination at 450 °C. After sensitization of BrA5, BrA6, BrA7, and BrA8 photosensitizers on the TiO 2 NG photoelectrodes, the optical properties of photoelectrodes show the broad band each in the visible region, which is assigned to n → π* charge-transfer transition. FT-IR analysis of photosensitizers showed the existence of N–H bands. The XRD pattern of TiO 2 NG photoanode confirmed the anatase and rutile phase. The E 0-0 and HOMO–LUMO energy levels were calculated using UV–visible, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The E 0-0 of BrA5 and BrA7 is 2.35 eV, while that of BrA6 and BrA8 is 2.33 eV. The DSSCs system is fabricated by loading the BrA5, BrA6, BrA7, and BrA8 photosensitizers on TiO 2 NGs. The photosensitizer's photovoltaic performances of TiO 2 NG-based electrodes were studied through electrochemical impedance analysis. The J–V curve analysis and characterization show that the efficient light absorption and reduction of charge recombination at the TiO 2 NG photoanodes are the main reasons for the efficiency of the TiO 2 NG/BrA5, TiO 2 NG/BrA6, TiO 2 NG/BrA7, and TiO 2 NG/BrA8 photoelectrodes. Compared to DSSCs employing other photosensitizers (BrA5, BrA6, and BrA7) on a TiO 2 NG photoelectrode (TiO 2 NG/BrA5 (0.33%), TiO 2 NG/BrA6 (0.35%), TiO 2 NG/BrA7 (0.36%), those using BrA8 demonstrate higher power conversion efficiencies. Specifically, TiO 2 NG/BrA8 shows the highest efficiency at 0.43%. The enhanced performance of the TiO 2 NG/BrA8-based DSSC can be attributed to its increased dye loading and rapid electron injection. The present study will open a new route to fabricate highly efficient DSSCs using amino-substituted 1,4-naphthoquinone photosensitizers.

Abstract:TiO2- and ZnO-based solar cells sensitized by a chlorophyll a derivative (methyl trans-32-carboxy-pyropheophorbide a) were fabricated and compared. The TiO2-based solar cell produces higher values for the short-circuit photocurrent (Jsc), open-circuit photovoltage (Voc), and energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency (η) than the ZnO-based solar cell. The observed ATR-FTIR data on the dye-sensitized semiconductor electrodes and the spectra estimated from the density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the dye sensitizer is bound to TiO2 with both the bidentate chelating and monodentate modes but is bound to ZnO with the monodentate mode exclusively. The frontier orbitals of the dye molecule bound to semiconductors suggest that the HOMO-2 and LUMO+2 orbitals of the dye sensitizer do not participate in electron transfer processes for the dye–ZnO system, resulting in a lower Jsc value and a relatively narrow response for the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency in the solar cell. Transition component analysis based upon the time-dependent DFT results explains well the experimental UV–vis spectra and difference in the η values between the dye-sensitized solar cells based upon TiO2 and ZnO nanocrystalline electrode materials.
Organic Sensitizers Based on Hexylthiophene-Functionalized Indolo[3,2-<i>b</i>]carbazole for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Two new organic sensitizers, MKZ-21 and MKZ-22, comprising 5,11-dioctylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole moiety as the electron donor, n-hexyl-substituted oligothiophene units as the pi-conjugated bridge, and cyanoacrylic acid group as the electron acceptor were designed and synthesized for application in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs). Theoretical calculation indicates that HOMO-LUMO excitation moves the electron distribution from the indolo[3,2,-b]carbazole moiety to the cyanoacrylic acid (cyanoacrylate) group. Compared with a sensitizer MK-1 based on a carbazole unit as the electron donor, both experimental results and theoretical calculations prove that, when connected into the similar donor-pi-acceptor structure, indolo[3,2-b]carbazole unit has stronger electron donating ability than the carbazole unit. For the functionalized organic sensitizers MKZ-21 and MKZ-22, upon anchoring onto TiO2 film, MKZ-21 exhibited a better photovoltaic performance: a monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 83%, a short-circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) of 15.4 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.71 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.67, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.3% under standard AM 1.5G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)), which suggests that the sensitizers based on indolo[3,2,-b]carbazole unit are promising candidates for DSSCs.

Abstract:Zn-doping in TiO2 gives an n-type doped material and can tailor the optical band gap and Fermi level of TiO2. In the present work, using metal Ti and Zn as raw materials, Zn-doped TiO2 nano-particles are synthesized via chemical co-precipitation and calcination process. The effects of Zn-doping on the morphology, crystal structure, optical behavior of TiO2 films, and the performance of CdS/CdSe sensitized cells are systemically investigated, we focus on improving the power conversion efficiency of the cells based on Zn-doped TiO2 photoanodes. The results show that the solar cell assembled with the Zn0.1Ti0.9O2 film exhibits a short circuit current density of 12.32 mAcm−2, open-circuit voltage of 0.604 V, and a power conversion efficiency of 3.03%. Its power conversion efficiency is 1.5-fold higher than that of the cell assembled with the pure TiO2 film, which is ascribed to reducing electron recombination and enhancing electron transport in the TiO2 film by the optimal Zn doping. Further increasing the amount of Zn doping in the TiO2 film, the performance of the cell decreases, which is attributed to introducing a large number of ZnO clusters and producing more surface defects in the TiO2 film that act as electron–hole recombination centers.

Abstract:A facile strategy is developed for the fabrication of titanium dioxide/zinc indium sulfide (TiO2/ZnIn2S4) hetero-junction photoanode with an adjustable ZnIn2S4 doping content and application in the dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Comparing to the pure TiO2, TiO2/ZnIn2S4 hetero-junction materials demonstrate an enhanced light utilizing efficiency, a reduced recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and an accelerated migration process of photoinduced electrons. Due to above merits, DSSC based on TiO2/ZnIn2S4 hetero-junction photoanode achieves a greatly enhanced short-circuit current density, leading to an improved photoelectric conversion efficiency of 8.09% under full sunlight illumination (100 mW cm(-2), AM 1.5 G), which is almost 14.43% higher than that of the pure TiO2-based DSSC (7.07%). Abstract:A protein with decay-accelerating activity for the classical C3 convertase, C4b2a, has been isolated on the basis of this function from guinea pig erythrocyte stroma. The isolation procedure for decay-accelerating factor of stroma (DAF-S) utilizes butanol extraction and chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel, hydroxylapatite, and phenyl Sepharose. Purified DAF-S has a m.w. of 60,000 and 65,000 on reduced and unreduced SDS gels, respectively, and exhibits m.w. of 30,000 and 175,000 on alkaline gradient gels, suggesting multiples of a 60,000-65,000 subunit. Purified DAF-S elicited a monospecific antiserum whose IgG fraction neutralized the decay-accelerating activity for C4b,2a affixed to 10(7) sheep erythrocytes (EAC1,4,2) in a dose-response fashion. The monospecific antiserum diluted up to 1:5120 agglutinated 1 x 10(6) guinea pig erythrocytes, but not sheep or human erythrocytes, suggesting that DAF-S, an integral membrane protein, has species-specific antigens that are expressed on the surface of the guinea pig erythrocyte.
Hybrid TiO2–SnO2 Nanotube Arrays for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is a promising wide band gap semiconductor material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) because of its high bulk electron mobility. Employing vertically ordered 1-D nanostruchires of SnO2 as the photoanode may overcome the limit of current DSCs by using new redox mediators with faster kinetics than currently used ones. Synthesizing such nanostructures and integrating them into DSCs, however, has been proven challenging. Here, we demonstrate that, by using ZnO nanowires as a sacrificial template, vertically aligned SnO2 nanotube arrays may be feasibly synthesized through a liquid-phase conversion process, and the synthesized SnO2 nanotubes can be further coated with a thin layer of TiO2 to form hybrid TiO2 SnO2 nanotube arrays. Both the resulting SnO2 and hybrid TiO2-SnO2, nanotube arrays are used to fabricate DSCs, and the best performing cell delivers a promising efficiency of 3.53%. Transient photovoltage measurements indicate that the electron recombination lifetime in hybrid TiO2-SnO2 nanotubes is significantly larger than those in TiO2 nanotubes, ZnO nanowires, and films of sintered TiO2 nanoparticles, suggesting promise of the TiO2-coated SnO2 nanotubes for further improvement of DSCs.
Relationship of Bone Turnover to Bone Density and Fractures

Abstract:To assess the influence of bone turnover on bone density and fracture risk, we measured serum levels of osteocalcin (OC), bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and carboxy‐terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP), as well as 24‐h urine levels of cross‐linked N‐telopeptides of type I collagen (NTx) and the free pyridinium cross‐links, pyridinoline (Pyd) and deoxypyridinoline (Dpd), among 351 subjects recruited from an age‐stratified random sample of Rochester, Minnesota women. PICP, NTx, and Dpd were negatively associated with age among the 138 premenopausal women. All of the biochemical markers were positively associated with age among the 213 postmenopausal women, and the prevalence of elevated turnover (>1 standard deviation [SD] above the premenopausal mean) varied from 9% (PICP) to 42% (Pyd). After adjusting for age, most of the markers were negatively correlated with bone mineral density (BMD) of the hip, spine, or forearm as measured by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry, and women with osteoporosis were more likely to have high bone turnover. A history of osteoporotic fractures of the hip, spine, or distal forearm was associated with reduced hip BMD and with elevated Pyd. After adjusting for lower BMD and increased bone resorption, reduced bone formation as assessed by OC was also associated with prior osteoporotic fractures. These data indicate that a substantial subset of elderly women has elevated bone turnover, which appears to adversely influence BMD and fracture risk. Combined biochemical and BMD screening may provide better prediction of future fracture risk than BMD alone.
