Abstract:By comparing the performance of two low-achieving (LA) training groups, targeting working memory (WM) or inhibitory control (IC), respectively, with that of a matched LA group and a normal-achieving (NA) group, the present study aimed to test whether cognitive training might be helpful to narrow the gap between the LA children and their (NA) peers. We tested children's Chinese language skills, math and fluid intelligence (Gf) at baseline, posttest, as well as two months after training completion. We observed training-related improvement in Chinese language skills, and furthermore, a substantial reduction of the achievement gap in Chinese between the trained groups and the NA control group at follow-up. These findings provide further evidence for the malleability of executive function, and demonstrate that targeted interventions can facilitate the acquisition of Chinese language skills, suggesting that low-cost interventions can be used to supplement regular classroom activities to benefit children who struggle academically.

Abstract:The role of executive function (EF) in reading has been widely supported among English-speaking children. Expanding upon existing work on the linkage between EF and Chinese word reading, the current study examined whether early EF would predict the longitudinal trajectories of Chinese word reading from preschool through Grade 3 among a group of children in mainland China (N = 196). Children’s EF was measured during the second year of preschool using a combination of behavior task and parent report. Children’s Chinese word reading abilities were assessed repeatedly over three years between the final preschool year and Grade 3. After controlling for demographic characteristics and children’s initial vocabulary knowledge, children’s working memory predicted their levels of Chinese word reading in preschool. In addition, children’s overall EF assessed using the behavior task and parent-rated inhibition and cognitive flexibility positively predicted children’s rates of growth in Chinese word reading skills. The visual complexity of Chinese characters appears to place high demands on children’s EF. The findings highlight the critical role of EF in Chinese children’s word reading across the first few years of formal schooling.

Abstract:The current study examined the executive function (EF) deficits and their roles in reading in one hundred and four Cantonese-speaking children with typical development, reading disabilities (RD), ADHD, and comorbid ADHD and RD (ADHD + RD). Children's EF and reading skills were measured. Analysis of variance results showed that all children with disorders manifested deficits in verbal and visuospatial short-term and working memory and behavioral inhibition. Moreover, children with ADHD and ADHD + RD also exhibited deficits in inhibition (IC and BI) and cognitive flexibility. These findings demonstrated that the EF deficits in Chinese children with RD, ADHD, and ADHD + RD are similar to those in their counterparts using alphabetic languages. However, children with ADHD + RD displayed more severe deficits in visuospatial working memory compared to children with RD and ADHD, which was inconsistent with that observed in children using alphabetic languages. Regression analysis results showed that verbal short-term memory was a significant predictor for both word reading and reading fluency in children with RD and ADHD + RD. Moreover, behavioral inhibition significantly predicted reading fluency in children with ADHD. These findings also agreed with previous studies. Collectively, the results of the current study showed that the EF deficits and their roles in reading found in Chinese children with RD, ADHD, and ADHD + RD are mainly consistent with children using alphabetic languages. However, more studies are still needed to confirm these findings, especially comparing the severity of working memory among these three disorders.

Abstract:<p>This longitudinal study investigated the bidirectional relationships between executive functioning (EF), visual skills, Chinese and English word reading abilities in children transitioning to primary school. A total of 165 children in Hong Kong were followed from the third year of kindergarten (Time 1) (mean age: 62.80 months, SD: 3.74) to the first year of primary school (Time 2) (mean age: 77.25 months, SD: 4.60). Assessments for measuring EF, visual skills, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and Chinese and English word reading were administered to the children at the two time points. Results of cross-lagged panel analyses revealed that after age, phonological awareness, and morphological awareness were controlled, EF and visual skills exhibited a bidirectional relationship. Furthermore, EF and word reading in Chinese or English reciprocally predicted each other during the school transition period after other skills were controlled. However, visual skills and word reading in Chinese or English did not predict each other. These findings highlight the close associations between EF and visual skills as well as the importance of EF in learning to read Chinese and English in kindergarten and early primary school.</p>

Abstract:Culture is thought to strongly influence the development of executive functions (EF), such that ethnic groups with similar cultural origins are generally assumed to exhibit comparable levels of EF performance. However, other characteristics, such as urbanization and Westernization, may also affect EF performance in societies comprising different ethnic groups, even if the ethnic groups share a similar cultural origin. The present study aimed to compare the perceptions of parents in three cities [China-Shenzhen (ZH group), China-Hong Kong (HK group), and Singapore (SG group)] regarding the EF performances of their children, all of whom share the same genetic and cultural (i.e., Chinese) origin. The study recruited 95 children aged 5-6 years (ZH group = 32; HK group = 32; SG group = 31). Their parents were invited to complete the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF). The ZH group had significantly lower BRIEF scores compared to both the HK and SG groups. However, the BRIEF scores of the HK and SG groups only differed significantly in terms of the Organization of Materials domain. The results suggest city-related differences in parents' perceptions of their children's EF performances, despite their similar genetic and cultural backgrounds. We additionally discuss further interpretations of our results and the limitations of this study.
Learning to read Chinese: Semantic, syntactic, phonological and working memory skills in normally achieving and poor Chinese readers

Abstract:Whereas many studies point to a positive relationship between phonological skills and reading in English, little is known about these relationships for children learning to read in a morphemic orthography such as Chinese. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among reading ability, phonological, semantic and syntactic skills in Chinese. The participants were 196 grade 1 to grade 4 Chinese children in Hong Kong. A word recognition task in Chinese was developed and children who scored in the lowest quartile were classified as poor readers. The children were administered phonological tasks (tone and rhyming discrimination), semantic tasks (choosing similar words and sentences meanings), a syntactic task (oral cloze), and a working memory task. The results showed that word recognition was highly correlated with phonological skills and semantic processing, and was only moderately related to syntactic knowledge and working memory. Poor readers showed a significant lag in the development of these skills with the most significant problems at the phonological and semantic levels. Phonological skills are important to the acquisition of reading skills in both Chinese and English.

Abstract:Ninety-four children in grades one to six (7 to 12 years old) in Hong Kong were individually administered a Chinese reading test consisting of 80 characters that varied in frequency (high or low) and orthographic structure (simple or complex). Phonological processing tasks, including short-term memory, pseudo-character recognition, and tone discrimination, were also administered. During reading, younger normal and poor readers made more semantic and visual errors, whereas older and normally achieving children made more phonologically related errors. Normally achieving readers also performed at a higher level than poor readers on short-term memory, pseudo-character recognition, and tone discrimination tasks. Phonological processing apparently plays a significant part in the development of reading skills in Chinese.

Abstract:Despite a growing body of literature in English-speaking contexts documenting associations among children's early reading, executive function (EF), and early writing development, relatively few studies investigate the development of these skills in young Chinese children. Utilizing a longitudinal research design, this study followed 84 Chinese children (M = 4.16 years, SD = 0.67) over the preschool year and investigated concurrent and longitudinal associations among young children's early reading (i.e. vocabulary, phonological awareness, and Pinyin knowledge), early writing (i.e. name writing and Chinese word writing), and EF skills (i.e. inhibitory control, behavioral regulation, and cognitive flexibility). Hierarchical regression and multinomial logistic regression analyses showed that Pinyin knowledge was concurrently and longitudinally associated with Chinese children's name writing and word writing skills. Reciprocal associations between Pinyin and Chinese name writing was also detected. Among EF skills, inhibitory control was concurrently associated with Chinese name writing skill, while cognitive flexibility was longitudinally associated with Chinese name writing. Findings suggest an important role of Pinyin knowledge in Chinese children's early writing development and point to the importance of examining the contribution of domain specific EF skills to Chinese early reading and writing development.

Abstract:Prior research on reading difficulties has mainly focused on word decoding problems. However, there exists another group of children – poor comprehenders (PCs) – who have normal word decoding abilities but difficulties in reading comprehension. Less is known about PCs especially in non-alphabetic languages such as Chinese. This study identified three groups – poor decoders, PCs, and average readers – among 103 Chinese children at the end of first grade. Children’s performances in reading and cognitive-linguistic measures, both concurrently at first grade and retrospectively at kindergarten levels two and three, were then compared among the three groups. This study is the first to demonstrate the distinct cognitive profiles of poor decoders and PCs in Chinese. The key cognitive-linguistic weaknesses of Chinese PCs were found to be in oral discourse skills and working memory. The retrospective data further revealed their oral discourse weakness as early as in preschool years at age 5. Practically, the necessity of developing assessment and intervention tools that focus on oral discourse skills for Chinese PCs is highlighted.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine which of the components of executive functions (EF)—inhibition, shifting, and working memory—predict reading and mathematics achievement and if the effects of these components are the same across two cultures (Western and East Asian). One hundred twenty English-speaking Canadian (65 females, 55 males; M age = 82.12 months) and 181 Mandarin-speaking Chinese (82 females, 99 males; M age = 85.85 months) children were assessed on nonverbal IQ, speed of processing, rapid naming, inhibition (Color-Word Stroop), shifting (Planned Connections), working memory (Digit Span Forward and Backward), reading (word identification and reading comprehension), and mathematics (numerical operations and math reasoning). The results of structural equation modeling indicated first that among the EF components only working memory predicted reading and mathematics in the Canadian sample, while inhibition and working memory predicted reading and mathematics in the Chinese sample. The results also showed that inhibition was a stronger predictor of reading and mathematics in the Chinese sample. Taken together, these findings suggest that not all EF components are equally important for reading/mathematics and that culture may influence the relations between specific EF components and academic achievement.

Abstract:Both Chinese and English literacy-related measures and cognitive-linguistic behavioural tasks were tested in second and third graders who were L1 (N=29) and L2 Chinese speakers (N=34), in order to answer the following question: How do these two groups differ in language and cognitive correlates of particular Chinese literacy skills? While the L1 group's scores showed relatively substantial correlations of a range of variables with Chinese word-reading and writing skills, for the L2 group the only correlation was between phonological awareness and literacy skills in both Chinese and English. Phonological awareness skills can be important for learning English as a second language, especially for early decoding and spelling, but a wider range of skills, including morphological awareness skills, visual skills, and orthographic skills, may be necessary for learning Chinese.
How Do Metalinguistic Awareness, Working Memory, Reasoning, and Inhibition Contribute to Chinese Character Reading of Kindergarten Children?

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the contributions of general cognitive skills (working memory, inhibition, and reasoning) and metalinguistic awareness to young children's character reading. One hundred eighty-nine Chinese children, aged from 60 to 78 months, were administered with measures of character recognition, language, metalinguistic awareness (phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and orthographic knowledge), and general cognitive processing (working memory, inhibition, and reasoning) in two kindergartens. Results showed both metalinguistic awareness and general cognitive processing contributed to children's character reading ability. Particularly, after controlling for age, gender, and language, metalinguistic awareness and general cognitive processing, respectively, explained 20% and 16% of the variance in children's character reading, among which phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, and reasoning made unique contributions to Chinese reading. Of these skills, orthographic knowledge showed the strongest relation to Chinese character reading. Findings highlight that both general cognitive processing and metalinguistic awareness are important for young Chinese children in character reading acquisition.
Auditory and speech processing and reading development in Chinese school children: behavioural and ERP evidence

Abstract:By measuring behavioural performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) this study investigated the extent to which Chinese school children's reading development is influenced by their skills in auditory, speech, and temporal processing. In Experiment 1, 102 normal school children's performance in pure tone temporal order judgment, tone frequency discrimination, temporal interval discrimination and composite tone pattern discrimination was measured. Results showed that children's auditory processing skills correlated significantly with their reading fluency, phonological awareness, word naming latency, and the number of Chinese characters learned. Regression analyses found that tone temporal order judgment, temporal interval discrimination and composite tone pattern discrimination could account for 32% of variance in phonological awareness. Controlling for the effect of phonological awareness, auditory processing measures still contributed significantly to variance in reading fluency and character naming. In Experiment 2, mismatch negativities (MMN) in event-related brain potentials were recorded from dyslexic children and the matched normal children, while these children listened passively to Chinese syllables and auditory stimuli composed of pure tones. The two groups of children did not differ in MMN to stimuli deviated in pure tone frequency and Chinese lexical tones. But dyslexic children showed smaller MMN to stimuli deviated in initial consonants or vowels of Chinese syllables and to stimuli deviated in temporal information of composite tone patterns. These results suggested that Chinese dyslexic children have deficits in auditory temporal processing as well as in linguistic processing and that auditory and temporal processing is possibly as important to reading development of children in a logographic writing system as in an alphabetic system.

Abstract:We investigated the correlates of word reading and spelling as well as the relations of word reading and spelling in Hong Kong Chinese children. A set of literacy-related skills and delayed copying were administered in kindergarten, and Chinese word reading and dictation were tested at kindergarten as well as in first and second grade. The final preferred model in cross-lagged analysis showed that reading performance at kindergarten and first grade predicted spelling performance at first grade and second grade, respectively. However, the relations were not bidirectional. This study underscores the critical roles of morphological awareness, RAN, and delayed copying for early literacy performance in Chinese. In addition, it demonstrates that earlier reading performance predicts later spelling performance in Chinese, but early spelling does not predict subsequent reading in Chinese in the early grades.
Acute cellular allograft rejection in homozygous CCR5 Delta32 patients after renal transplantation.

Abstract:We report that three of four patients who were identified as carriers of the homozygous CCR5 32 mutation developed acute cellular allograft rejection after renal transplantation. Despite the lack of a functional CCR5, dense Tcell infiltration into the allograft was detectable. Interestingly, the vast majority of recruited T cells expressed CXCR3, indicating that alternative chemokine pathways can promote T-cell trafficking in acute renal allograft rejection. Approximately 10–20% of whites are heterozygous and about 1% are homozygous carriers of a 32-base pair deletion mutation in the chemokine receptor 5 gene (CCR5 32) leading to a nonfunctional receptor. CCR5 is highly expressed on the cell surface of Th1-polarized T cells and monocytes. CCR5 is activated by three chemokines: RANTES/CCL5, MIP-1 / CCL3, and MIP-1 /CCL4. Each of these ligands is induced under inflammatory conditions in the kidney. Acute allograft rejection after renal transplantation is characterized by recruitment of activated T cells into the allograft. Data from experimental and human studies support that the process of leukocyte recruitment in acute allograft rejection is controlled by chemokines and their cognate receptors (1). In particular, the receptors CCR5 and CXCR3, both predominantly expressed on Th1 cells, are supposed to be involved in the pathophysiology of cellmediated allograft rejection in renal transplantation (2). In a recent multicenter study, Fischereder et al. demonstrated that patients carrying the homozygous CCR5 32 genotype had a significantly longer renal transplant survival time than heterozygous CCR5 32 and CCR5 wild-type individuals (3). Despite the improved graft survival, biopsy-proven acute rejection occurred in 9 of the 21 CCR5 32 patients in this study. As it remains unclear to what extend the lack of CCR5 impairs the development of acute allograft rejection, we screened 187 patients who had undergone renal transplantation in our center for the CCR5 32 genotype by polymerase chain reaction screening. Of the 187 patients, 162 (86.6%) had a CCR5 wild-type genotype, 21 (11.2%) were heterozygous, and four patients had a homozygous CCR5 32 genotype (2.1%). Clinical basic data of the four CCR5 / patients are given in Table 1. Three of these homozygous CCR5 32 patients (75%) developed biopsy-proven acute renal allograft rejection with characteristic infiltration of T cells and monocytes into the allograft (Banff 1A), while the rejection rate in the wild-type population was 33% and 29% in the heterozygous patients. Overall rejection rate was 33%. Immunohistochemical staining of patients carrying the CCR5 32 genotype with acute allograft rejection (n 3) demonstrated dense infiltrates of CD3positive T cells which could be subclassified as CD4 or CD8 positive and CD 68-positive monocytes (Fig. 1 and Table 1). As expected, CCR5 immunostaining was almost completely negative in the allografts of the homozygous CCR5 32 individuals (Fig. 1). Only in one allograft from a CCR5 32 carrier few CCR5 positive cells could be detected. As fluorescenceactivated cell sorting analysis of leukocytes from the peripheral blood of this patient showed complete absence of the CCR5 (data not shown), these infiltrating cells are probably donor derived. CCR5 wild-type carriers with acute rejection, by contrast, showed strong CCR5 positivity confined to infiltrating T cells and monocytes (2). In a next step, we performed immunohistological staining for the Th1-characteristic receptor CXCR3. In homozygous CCR5 32 patients, the vast majority of infiltrating CD3-positive T cells were CXCR3 positive (Fig. 1). The number of infiltrating (CXCR3 ) CD3 positive T cells per tubulointerstitial high-power field in this group (Table 1) was comparable to that of 13 wild-type patients with early acute allograft rejection (2), thus suggesting that CXCR3-mediated T-cell recruitment is a mechanism to compensate for the lack of functional CCR5. These results indicate that the lack of CCR5 does not substantially attenuate the recruitment of activated T cells in acute allograft rejection, underscoring the functional redundancy of the chemokine system. The effects leading to the longer transplant survival in CCR5 32 therefore remain largely unknown. Indeed we believe that the benefit of CCR5 32 on the long-term transplant survival is probably explained by several complex mechanisms, some of which cannot be functionally replaced by CXCR3. As has been reported recently, CCR5 exerts an important role in the immunological synapse were it helps to establish an effective crosstalk between antigen-presenting cells and T cells (4). Moreover, it has been described that the CCR5 plays an important role in longterm CD8 memory T cell generation in secondary lymphatic organs, thus probably influencing the chronic rejection process (5). On the basis of these data and our own findings, it is questionable whether the blockade of CCR5 alone is a useful strategy for prevention of acute allograft rejection in the early period after renal transplantation, which is of central interest because CCR5 blockade is now therapeutically used in the clinical setting (6). Abstract:While phonological skills have been found to be correlated with reading across different writing systems, recent findings have shown that developmental dyslexia in Chinese individuals has multiple deficits, and no single factor has ever been identified as crucial for learning this writing system. To examine whether a deficit in the phonological or another cognitive domain is a necessary or sufficient condition for Chinese reading disability, this study examined the cognitive profiles of 521 good readers and 502 dyslexic readers in Chinese primary schools using a battery of behavioral measures covering phonological, visual, orthographic, visual-motor coordination and working memory skills. The results showed that among all cognitive measures, phonological skills correlated more strongly with character reading performance but that poor phonological skills did not necessarily or sufficiently lead to poor reading performance in Chinese.

Abstract:Impaired basic academic skills (e.g., word recognition) are common in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The underlying neuropsychological and neural correlates of impaired Chinese reading skills in children with ADHD have not been substantially explored. Three hundred and two children with ADHD (all medication-naïve) and 105 healthy controls underwent the Chinese language skill assessment, and 175 also underwent fMRI scans (84 ADHD and 91 controls). Between-group and mediation analyses were applied to explore the interrelationships of the diagnosis of ADHD, cognitive dysfunction, and impaired reading skills. Five ADHD-related brain functional networks, including the default mode network (DMN) and the dorsal attention network (DAN), were built using predefined regions of interest. Voxel-based group-wise comparisons were performed. The ADHD group performed worse than the control group in word-level reading ability tests, with lower scores in Chinese character recognition (CR) and word chains (WS) (all P < 0.05). With full-scale IQ and sustained attention in the mediation model, the direct effect of ADHD status on the CR score became insignificant ( P = 0.066). The underlying neural correlates for the orthographic knowledge (OT) and CR differed between the ADHD and the control group. The ADHD group tended to recruit more DMN regions to maintain their reading performance, while the control group seemed to utilize more DAN regions. Children with ADHD generally presented impaired word-level reading skills, which might be caused by impaired sustained attention and lower IQ. According to the brain functional results, we infer that ADHD children might utilize a different strategy to maintain their orthographic knowledge and character recognition performance.

Abstract:By testing 309 35～49month children on vocabulary,morphological awareness,grammar,non-word repetition and picture naming tests,the present study examined the screening of Chinese reading at risk children and their cognitive character.The results showed that reading at risk children were significant poorer than normal children on all tasks;grammar and phonological deficit had the largest perception;the more deficits had,the poorer of score of at risk children.The finding of present study have theory and practical meaning for Chinese reading at risk children's early intervention.

Abstract:The study aimed to explore spoken language and executive function (EF) characteristics in 3-5-year-old prelingually deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, and evaluate the impact of demographic variables and EF on spoken language skills. 48 DHH children and 48 typically developing children who use auditory-oral communication were recruited. All participants underwent EF tests, including auditory working memory (WM), inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and the EF performance reported by parents. Using Mandarin Clinical Evaluation of Language for Preschoolers (MCELP), vocabulary comprehension, sentence comprehension, vocabulary naming, sentence structure imitation, and story narration were evaluated only in the DHH group, and their results were compared with the typical developmental level provided by MCELP. Results showed that DHH children exhibit deficiencies in different spoken language domains and EF components. While the spoken language skills of DHH children tend to improve as they age, a growing proportion of individuals fail to reach the typical developmental level. The spoken language ability in DHH children was positively correlated with age and EFs, and negatively correlated with aided hearing threshold, while auditory WM could positively predict their spoken language performance.

Abstract:The role of information processing deficits in poor readers of nonalphabetic scripts such as Chinese is not well documented. Here, we examined perceptual processing in good and poor readers of Chinese. Specifically, two groups of third grade children comprising 20 “good readers” and 19 “poor readers,” drawn from a larger pool of 254 students, were tested using an auditory version of the Stop Reaction Time (Stop-RT) interval timing task, a phoneme perception task, and several measures of phonological awareness and orthographic processing. Mean Stop RTs for good readers were significantly faster than those for poor readers, and good readers were also faster in a test of rapid digit naming, but good and poor readers did not differ on measures of phoneme onset awareness or orthographic processing. Although good and poor readers did not differ in overall categorical perception of ∣pa5∣ and ∣pha5∣ stimuli, the good readers responded significantly faster than the poor readers. Taken together, the group differences obtained here are consistent with a slowing of information processing and behavioral output in poor readers of Chinese, rather than a loss of temporal resolution of perceptual processing.
