Abstract:Here, a smartwatch for sweat monitoring was presented for perspiration analysis. The smartwatch played the part of analyzing, computing, and displaying the real-time data with the feature of comfortable wearing and lightweight ergonomic design. Moreover, the paper-based microfluidic patch with a three-dimensional structure was proposed to realize the sweat collection and solve the issue of sweat accumulation. To further realizing the sweat monitoring, the potassium and sodium ion-selective electrodes were developed by the screen-printing technique. The experiment of on-body monitoring the K+ and Na+ in sweat had been carried out to further demonstrate the feasibility of the smartwatch.

Abstract:Skin-interfaced electrochemical sensing devices are widely developed for biochemical sensing at molecular levels. However, the sensing electrodes fabricated with photolithography or printing technique are hard to achieve high stretchability without special designs like serpentine shape. Also, most of them require wired connections with external electrochemical workstations for data acquisition or on-board batteries to power the circuits, which largely restrain the flexibility, simplification, and miniaturization of the devices. Here, a battery-free, wireless, and epidermal electrochemical system is presented for in situ biochemical sensing. The sensing component of the system is a stretchable electrode array all-printed with soft polymer and conductive silver nanowires. The electrodes show stable electrical properties within strain range of 0-50%, without serpentine designs. The electronic component of the system is a fully integrated flexible circuit board with near field communication module, which enables wireless energy harvesting and data transmission with smartphones. The system demonstrates good performance in real-time on-body sweat analysis for simultaneous quantitative detections of glucose, hydrogen, sodium, and potassium. This battery-free and wireless epidermal electrochemical system provides a simplified, miniaturized, and flexible solution for a wide range of biochemical platforms, including wearable and implanted bioelectronics.

Abstract:Wearable electrochemical sensors have attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Here, a three-dimensional paper-based microfluidic electrochemical integrated device (3D-PMED) was demonstrated for real-time monitoring of sweat potassium. The 3D-PMED was fabricated by wax printing patterns on cellulose paper and then folding the pre-patterned paper four times to form five stacked layers: sweat collector, vertical channel, transverse channel, electrode layer and sweat evaporator. A sweat monitoring device was realized by integrating a screen-printed potassium ion selective sensor on PET substrate with the fabricated 3D-PMED. The sweat flow process in 3D-PMED was modelled with red ink to demonstrate the capability of collecting sweat. The detection range of potassium ion selective sensor is 1-32 mM, and the electrode response potential is 59.2 mV per decade of concentration. The electrodes have shown good selectivity for both anion and cation, and a stable performance within 2 weeks.

Abstract:Wearable electrochemical sensors have attracted tremendous attention in recent years. A sweat monitoring device was realized by integrating a screen-printed glucose sensor on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate with the fabricated 3D-PMED. The sweat flow process in 3D-PMED was modelled with red ink to demonstrate the capability of collecting, analyzing and evaporating sweat, due to the capillary action of filter paper and hydrophobicity of wax. The glucose sensor was designed with a high sensitivity (35.7 μA mM-1 cm-2) and low detection limit (5 μM), considering the low concentration of glucose in sweat. An on-body experiment was carried out to validate the practicability of the three-dimensional sweat monitoring device. Such a 3D-PMED can be readily expanded for the simultaneous monitoring of alternative sweat electrolytes and metabolites.

Abstract:Capabilities in health monitoring enabled by capture and quantitative chemical analysis of sweat could complement, or potentially obviate the need for, approaches based on sporadic assessment of blood samples. Established sweat monitoring technologies use simple fabric swatches and are limited to basic analysis in controlled laboratory or hospital settings. We present a collection of materials and device designs for soft, flexible, and stretchable microfluidic systems, including embodiments that integrate wireless communication electronics, which can intimately and robustly bond to the surface of the skin without chemical and mechanical irritation. This integration defines access points for a small set of sweat glands such that perspiration spontaneously initiates routing of sweat through a microfluidic network and set of reservoirs. Embedded chemical analyses respond in colorimetric fashion to markers such as chloride and hydronium ions, glucose, and lactate. Wireless interfaces to digital image capture hardware serve as a means for quantitation. Human studies demonstrated the functionality of this microfluidic device during fitness cycling in a controlled environment and during long-distance bicycle racing in arid, outdoor conditions. The results include quantitative values for sweat rate, total sweat loss, pH, and concentration of chloride and lactate.

Abstract:Sweat is an important biofluid with rich physiological information that can evaluate human health condition. Wearable sweat sensors have received widespread attention in recent years due to the benefits of non-invasive, continuous, and real-time monitoring. Currently, an efficient device integrating sweat collection and detection is still needed. Here, a wearable sweat microfluidic system was fabricated for real-time collection and analysis of sweat. The fabricated microfluidic system consisted of four layers, including a skin adhesive layer, a microfluidic layer, an electrode layer, and a capping layer. The sweat collection rate was around 0.79 μL/min, which demonstrated efficient sweat sampling, storage, and refreshing capabilities. Simultaneous detection of multiple sweat biomarkers was achieved with a screen-printed sweat sensing array, which could realize high-precision detection of Na + , K + , and glucose. Moreover, the sensing array also showed good repeatability and stability, with a relative standard deviation of sensitivity of less than 5%. Additionally, human testing was conducted to demonstrate that this microfluidic system can continuously monitor Na + , K + , and glucose in subjects' sweat during exercise, which showed high potential for non-invasive human health monitoring.

Abstract:Skin-interfaced microfluidic patch has become a reliable device for sweat collection and analysis. However, the intractable problems of emptying the microchannel for reuse, and the channel's volumetric capacity limited by the size of the patch, directly hinder the practical application of sweat sensors. Herein, we report an adaptively resettable microfluidic sweat patch (Art-Sweat patch) capable of continuously monitoring both sweat rate (0.2-4.0 μL min-1) and total ionic charge concentration (10-200 mmol L-1). We develop a platform with a vertical and horizontal microchannel combined strategy, enabling repeatedly filling sweat and emptying the microchannel for autonomously resetting and detecting. The variation in the emptied volume is designed to be adaptively identified by the sensor, resulting in enhanced stability and an enlarged volumetric capacity of over 300 μL. By integrating with self-designed wireless transmission modules, the proposed Art-Sweat patch shows product-level wearability and high performance in monitoring variations in regional sweat rate and concentration for hydration status assessment.

Abstract:Wearable sweat biosensors have gained attention due to their potential for non-invasive health monitoring. However, practical applications still face challenges in integrating multiplex sensors primarily due to sweat accumulation, complex microfluidic preparation processes, and degradability of substrate materials. In this study, a multiplex sweat sensor based on leather fluidic transport is proposed. The pre-treated leather exhibits favorable hydrophilicity, air permeability, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, high sensitivity and stability multiplex sensor electrodes for pH, chloride, potassium, and sodium ions have been integrated into the leather-based fluid transport to fabricate an integrated wearable sweat device. By enabling sweat analysis compatible with routine and daily activities, the integrated wearable sweat device achieves continuous and long-term monitoring of body physiology.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensors hold immense potential for continuous monitoring of physiological parameters non-invasively. However, environmental and physiological changes may lead to reduced sweating, making iontophoresis-induced sweat analysis a more attractive and feasible option for easy-sampling in daily life. Nevertheless, this approach also faces challenges such as analyte concentration being affected by sweat rate variance and sweat dilution. To address these challenges, we have developed a multi-sensing patch for iontophoresis-stimulated sweat detection under sedentary conditions. The platform integrated electrochemical sensor arrays with microfluidic components for a rapid collection and in situ measurement including metabolites (glucose and ethanol) and electrolytes (Na+ and pH) in sweat. The designed microfluidic patch, capable of sequential sweat collection, significantly improved the signal stability at low sweat rate and its performance was verified by software simulation, in vitro analysis, and on-body signal monitoring. Overall, this microfluidic sensing patch opens an exciting avenue for analyzing the perspiring condition of sedentary individuals, making it an attractive option for point-of-care testing applications.

Abstract:There is considerable interest in wearable potentiometric ion sensors that can provide information about the quality of a person's health by monitoring ion concentration levels in biofluids. Significant progress has been achieved, particularly in device integration. However, the crucial interfacial water layer and the use of transducer materials remain challenging. Herein we report a paper-based, flexible, all-solid-state, ion-selective electrode (ISE) for the real-time analysis of sweat. The super-hydrophobic paper matrix was modified with a fluorinated alkyl silane to reduce the water-layer effect. We used a high-quality graphene suspension with high conductivity and capacitance as an ion-to-electron transducer, which further stabilized the potential. The integrated solid ISE has four channels that can detect K+, Na+, Cl− and pH simultaneously. This wearable potentiometric sensor has reliable accuracy, good potential stability and low detection limits, and could be used in healthcare and clinical analysis.

Abstract:Stretchable sweat sensors have become a personalized wearable platform for continuous, noninvasive health monitoring through conformal integration with the human body. Typically, these devices are coupled with soft microfluidic systems to control sweat flow during advanced analysis processes. However, the implementation of these soft microfluidic devices is limited by their high fabrication costs and the need for skin adhesives to block natural perspiration. To overcome these limitations, a stretchable and smart wettable patch has been proposed for multiplexed in situ perspiration analysis. The patch includes a porous membrane in the form of a patterned microfoam and a nanofiber layer laminate, which extracts sweat selectively from the skin and directs its continuous flow across the device. The integrated electrochemical sensor array measures multiple biomarkers simultaneously such as pH, K+, and Na+. The soft sensing patch comprises compliant materials and structures that allow deformability of up to 50% strain, which enables a stable and seamless interface with the curvilinear human body. During continuous physical exercise, the device has demonstrated a special operating mode by actively accumulating sweat from the skin for multiplex electrochemical analysis of biomarker profiles. The smart wettable membrane provides an affordable solution to address the sampling challenges of in situ perspiration analysis.

Abstract:An integrated wearable sweat detection system is introduced, featuring a unique bionic microfluidic chip for efficient sweat collection and real‐time electrochemical analysis. This system offers high‐precision measurements of key physiological indicators in fresh sweat, ensuring wearer comfort and versatile applications. Fresh sweat contains a diverse range of physiological indicators that can effectively reflect changes in the body. However, existing wearable sweat detection systems face challenges in efficiently collecting and detecting fresh sweat in real‐time. Additionally, they often lack the necessary deformation capabilities, resulting in discomfort for the wearer. Here, a fully elastic wearable electrochemical sweat detection system is developed that integrates a sweat‐collecting microfluidic chip, a multi‐parameter electrochemical sensor, a micro‐heater, and a sweat detection elastic circuit board system. The unique tree‐bionic structure of the microfluidic chip significantly enhances the efficiency of fresh sweat collection and discharge, enabling real‐time detection by the electrochemical sensors. The sweat multi‐parameter electrochemical sensor offers high‐precision and high‐sensitivity measurements of sodium ions, potassium ions, lactate, and glucose. The electronic system is built on an elastic circuit board that matches perfectly to wrinkled skin, ensuring improved wearing comfort and enabling multi‐channel data sampling, processing, and wireless transmission. This state‐of‐the‐art system represents a significant advancement in the field of elastic wearable sweat detection and holds promising potential for extending its capabilities to the detection of other sweat markers or various wearable applications.

Abstract:A wearable droplet‐based human sweat monitoring platform achieved by combining an electrowetting on a dielectrics device and a triboelectric nanogenerator is demonstrated. The sweat droplets are actuated by dielectric wetting effect to realize the microreaction with indicator, and the pH level of sweat can be also detected. This work will promote the progress toward the practical application of wearable sweat sensors. Wearable sweat sensors can analyze the abundant composition of solutes and metabolites in sweat to reflect the health state of the wearers in real time. The realization of active motion control for sweat droplets is significant for a multifunctional sweat monitoring device with several analysis chambers. Here, a wearable droplet‐based human sweat monitoring platform (WSMP), by combining an electrowetting on dielectrics (EWOD) device and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), is demonstrated. It allows to collect and transport sweat droplets in different chambers by dielectric wetting effect and eventually merge and react with a pH indicator. The mechanical and electrical model of WSMP is introduced to describe the relationship between the open‐circuit voltage of the TENG and the voltage applied on the EWOD device. The high‐voltage electrical field generated by the TENG can change the wettability of solid–liquid interfaces and realize the controlling of droplet motion. The contact angle of electrolyte droplets changes over 30% with the triboelectric voltage of 5 kV. The driving, merging, and color reaction can be realized by actively controlling the motion of droplets. Finally, a wearable WSMP worn on the shank successfully demonstrates the preliminary detection of the pH level of human sweat.

Abstract:In the field of wearable sensing, small and precise sensors can greatly reduce the burden on the wearer and improve the sense of experience, which is the future direction of sensing development. Herein, we introduce an ultra-small wearable biosensor system that integrates an MS02 chip for real-time and highly accurate sweat detection. The whole system mainly includes flexible electrodes and a printed circle board (PCB). The size of the PCB is only 1.5 cm × 0.8 cm, which greatly minimizes the size of the sweat system and improves wearing comfort. Notably, this miniaturized system is comparable to a commercial electrochemical workstation, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of real-time analysis. The core processing MS02 chip, with a dimension of 1.2 mm × 1.1 mm, is used to perform electrochemical signal processing. By performing electrochemical characterization and measurements of the ultra-small wearable biosensor system, on-body monitoring of four biomarkers (glucose, lactate, Na+, and K+) in sweat of human volunteers has been successfully achieved. With the help of this electrochemical sensor system, mass of biochemical data from perspiration can be acquired to better understand the body's response to daily activities, which will facilitate the early prediction of abnormal physiological changes in the future.

Hybrid Janus Membrane with Dual-Asymmetry Integration of Wettability and Conductivity for Ultra-Low-Volume Sweat Sensing

Abstract:Highly sensitive and selective analysis of sweat at ultra-low sample volume remains a major challenge in the field of biosensing. Manipulation of small volumes of liquid for efficient sampling is essential to address this challenge. A hybrid Janus membrane with dual-asymmetry integration of wettability and conductivity is developed for regulated micro-volume liquid transport in wearable sweat biosensing. Unlike the uncontrollable liquid diffusion in a conventional porous membrane, the asymmetric wettability of porous Janus membrane leads to unique unidirectional liquid transport with high breakthrough pressure (1737.66 Pa) and fast self-pumping rate (35.94 μL/min) for micro-volume liquid sampling. The asymmetric conductive layer shows excellent flexible conductivity, anti-interference of friction, and efficient electrochemical interface due to the in situ generation of gold nanoparticles on one side of the membrane. The fabricated Pt-enzyme electrodes on the membrane promises effective testing range, great selectivity, and high sensitivity and accuracy (correlation efficiency, glucose: R2 = 0.999, lactate: R2 = 0.997), enabling ultra-low volume (∼0.15 μL) real time measurements on the skin surface. The innovative Janus membrane with unidirectional, self-pumping, and anti-interference performance provides a new strategy for miniaturized wearable microfluidic sweat electrochemical biosensor preparation in athletic performance evaluation, health monitoring, disease diagnosis, intelligent medicine, and so forth.

Abstract:A wearable sweat sensor, which could continuously monitor biomolecules related to the human physiological state, is emerging as a promising piece of health surveillance equipment. However, current sensors cannot simultaneously achieve a detection performance that equates to that of traditional sensors and satisfactory mechanical strength. Herein, a wearable sweat sensor with excellent detection performance and mechanical stability is designed and fabricated. Based on the integration of laser-induced graphene electrodes and a screen printing technique, this wearable sweat sensor could realize both the separate and simultaneous detection of uric acid (UA), tyrosine (Tyr), and ascorbic acid (AA) with high sensitivity. Good UA sensing performance in artificial sweat could be maintained even after 20 000 bends. In addition, the sensor can operate well in the wearing state or in a complex bovine whole blood sample. For the detection of human sweat, the changes in UA concentration after a purine-rich meal are continuously monitored and the results are in accordance with the corresponding serum UA detection results tested with a commercial serum UA meter. These results suggest its application potential in health monitoring for both gout patients and healthy humans.

In this work, we propose a skin-like hydrogel-elastomer based electrochemical device for comfortable wearable biofluid monitoring, which employs a thin thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film as an interlayer to bridge stretchable hydrogels and conductive ink to maintain good electrical conductivity without compromising the mechanical flexibility. The prepared electrochemical device has a Young's modulus (0.37 MPa) similar to that of the skin, thereby greatly improving the conformality with the curved surface of the skin and the wearing comfort during exercise. The device can achieve monitoring pH, Na+ and K+ in sweat with high sensitivity (58.14 mV/pH for pH, 58.89 mV/ decade for Na+, and 59.11 mV/decade for K+), high specificity and high reproducibility, which maintains such excellent electrochemical performance even under 30 % strain without complicated external structural design. Such a skin-like hydrogel-elastomer based electrochemical device with excellent wearing comfort and mechanical deformability provide considerable potential for wearable biofluid monitoring in personalized health applications.

Abstract:The development of wearable biosensors for continuous noninvasive monitoring of target biomarkers is limited to assays of a single sampled biofluid. An example of simultaneous noninvasive sampling and analysis of two different biofluids using a single wearable epidermal platform is demonstrated here. The concept is successfully realized through sweat stimulation (via transdermal pilocarpine delivery) at an anode, alongside extraction of interstitial fluid (ISF) at a cathode. The system thus allows on-demand, controlled sampling of the two epidermal biofluids at the same time, at two physically separate locations (on the same flexible platform) containing different electrochemical biosensors for monitoring the corresponding biomarkers. Such a dual biofluid sampling and analysis concept is implemented using a cost-effective screen-printing technique with body-compliant temporary tattoo materials and conformal wireless readout circuits to enable real-time measurement of biomarkers in the sampled epidermal biofluids. The performance of the developed wearable device is demonstrated by measuring sweat-alcohol and ISF-glucose in human subjects consuming food and alcoholic drinks. The different compositions of sweat and ISF with good correlations of their chemical constituents to their blood levels make the developed platform extremely attractive for enhancing the power and scope of next-generation noninvasive epidermal biosensing systems.

Abstract:Wearable sweat electrochemical sensors have attracted wide attention due to their advantages of non-invasive, portable, real-time monitoring, etc. However, existing sensors still have some problems with efficient sweat collection. Microfluidic channel technology and electrospinning technology are commonly used to collect sweat efficiently, but there are some limitations such as complex channel design and multiple spinning parameters. Besides, existing sensors are mostly based on flexible polymers, such as, PET, PDMS, PI and PI, which have limited wearability and permeability. Based on the above, all fabric and dual-function flexible wearable sweat electrochemical sensor is proposed in this paper. This sensor uses fabric as the raw material to implement the directional transport of sweat and the multi-component integrated detection dual functions. Meanwhile, the high-efficiency collection of sweat is obtained by a Janus fabric, wherein one side of the selected silk is superhydrophobic graft treated and the other side is hydrophilic plasma treated. Therefore, the resulting Janus fabric can effectively transfer sweat from the skin side to the electrode, and the minimum sweat droplet can reach 0.2 μL to achieve micro-volume collection. Besides, the patterned sensor, made of silk-based carbon cloth, is fabricated using a simple laser engraving, which could detect Na + , pH, and glucose instantaneously. As a result, these proposed sensors can achieve good sensing performance and high-efficiency sweat collection dual functionality; moreover, it has good flexibility and comfortable wearability.

Abstract:The directional movement of liquid without exogenous drive can show great potential in portable electro-chemical platforms. Herein, we developed a portable electrochemical platform that drove electrolyte flow by surface tension gradient, which can realize collection of electrolyte, flow preconcentration and electrochemical detection of Cu2+. The induced graphene electrodes (LIG) was fabricated using laser direct writing, and flower cluster shaped ZnO nanorods (FC-ZnONRs) were prepared and modified on LIG, which provided a large amount of space for electrolyte to shuttled between the holes of LIG and ZnO, and increased the electrochemical active sites and electrons transport ability. The effect of surface tension gradients driving fluid flow could accelerate preconcentration, shorten detection time (save 300 s of preconcentration time) and enhance electrochemical responses in synergy with the 3D FC-ZnONRs/LIG. The microfluidic system possessed excellent performance for detection of Cu2+ ranged from 1 & mu;g L-1 to 2100 & mu;g L-1 with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.0368 & mu;g L-1 and high sensitivity of 0.414 & mu;A (& mu;g L-1)-1 cm-2. Additionally, this portable microfluidic system was successfully worn on the skin for analysing Cu2+ in human sweat, and the results showed good consistency with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This novel sensing system provides a sample collection, rapid detection, low cost and easy-to-operate strategy for heavy metal ions analysis in real samples and shows huge application prospects in point-of-care testing.
