Abstract:To solve the problem of poor nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of low C/N ratio wastewater, a siphon constructed wetland - microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) reactor was constructed. And the influence of electrochemical process on autotrophic denitrification and nitrogen removal was studied. The effects of agricultural waste as cellulose carbon source on heterotrophic denitrification and electricity generation were also investigated. In addition, related electrochemical processes and microbial mechanisms were studied. The results indicated that MFC enhanced autotrophic denitrification. The addition of cellulose carbon source could significantly promote the heterotrophic denitrification process (P < 0.05). In 137 days, the reactor with carbon source added to both cathode and anode (CS CW-MFC) had the best removal effect on COD, NH4+-N and TN, with removal rates of 98.38%, 79.31% and 84.43%, respectively. The removal efficiency of TP reached 89.92%. Adding carbon sources facilitated biological electricity production. The maximum voltage was 450 mV, and the maximum power density was 113.95 mW m−3. However, methane emissions increased slightly with the addition of carbon sources. Compared with previous studies, tidal flow via siphon aeration could significantly improve TN removal efficiency. Bioelectrochemical processes had significant impact on the autotrophic denitrifying bacteria, the relative abundance of Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria was the highest. This study suggests that the addition of cellulose carbon source and the operation of tidal flow CW-MFC can enhance treatment of low C/N ratio wastewater. This technology not only enables agricultural waste to be recycled, but also improves the efficiency of sewage treatment and energy recovery.

Abstract:In view of the difficulty in denitrification of low C/N ratio wastewater, electrochemical technology with multiple electrodes and tidal flow method via siphon aeration were used to enhance the denitrification process. At the same time, because of the low phosphorus removal efficiency in traditional activated sludge process, the constructed wetland and microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) reactor with dewatered alum sludge (DAS) as substrate were constructed. In addition, the REDOX conditions of the reactor were changed by siphon, which significantly improved the removal efficiency of N and P and the energy recovery capacity of the reactor. In the 172 d, the Tidal Flow Constructed Wetland-Microbial Fuel Cell (TF CW-MFC) had the highest removal efficiency of COD and total nitrogen (TN), which were 97.4% and 83.4%, respectively. Although the removal rate of total phosphorus (TP) by TF CW-MFC was lower than artificial aeration, it can still reached 89.0%. The removal effect of aromatic protein substances in water was also significant. The amount of electrons generated by the artificial aeration anode and the amount of oxygen generated by the cathode were not enough to match. The voltage of TF CW-MFC was significantly higher than artificial aeration, around 350 mV, and the maximum power density was 98.16 mW m−3. In addition, MFC had an inhibitory effect on CW methane emissions. The analysis of the microbial community structure showed that most of the dominant bacteria of TF CW-MFC belonged to the Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi. These results showed that the TF CW-MFC technology as a zero-energy oxygen supply mode had high efficiency in the treatment of low C/N ratio wastewater and also had the environmental effect of reducing methane emissions. This study suggests that this green wastewater treatment technology has potential application value.

Abstract:The symbiotic and complementary relationship between constructed wetlands and microbial fuel cells (termed as CW-MFC) would induce tantalizing possibilities for enhancing wastewater treatment. In this review, the performance of CW-MFC performed in different scenarios was discussed, and clearly indicate strengths and weaknesses. And comprehensively summarized that the CW-MFC enhances wastewater treatment efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, primarily attributed to phytoremediation, substrate competition and dominance of electrogenic bacteria. Furthermore, the extracellular electron transfer involved in CW-MFC has been summarized, which is mainly classified into two types, named direct and mediated extracellular electron transfer, and the enhanced strategy has been analyzed. Notwithstanding, CW-MFC still needs more in-depth research to fill the gap with practical application and to explore further electron transfer mechanisms associated with the bacterium. Potential research areas that appear to be worth pursuing in the future for ameliorating full-scale applications are also explored to serve as a reference for further research.

Effect of wetland plant fermentation broth on nitrogen removal and bioenergy generation in constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used as a tertiary treatment technology, and the addition of carbon sources can significantly improve advanced nitrogen removal. However, excessive carbon sources would lead to an increase in the effluent chemical oxygen demand in CWs, and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can convert these into electricity. In this study, constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) were built to achieve simultaneous nitrogen removal and electricity generation, using wetland plant litter fermentation broths as carbon sources. The total nitrogen removal in the groups with fermentation broth addition (FGs) reached 83.33%, which was 19.64% higher than that in the CG (group without fermentation broth), and the mean voltages in the FGs were at least 2.6 times higher than that of the CG. Furthermore, two main components of the fermentation broths, acetic acid (Ac) and humic acid (HA), were identified using a three-dimensional excitation emission matrix and gas chromatograph and added to CW-MFCs to explore the influence mechanism on the treatment performance. Denitrification and electrogenesis presented the same tendency: Ac&HA > Ac > CG' (groups without Ac and HA). These results indicate that Ac and HA increased the abundance of functional genes associated with nitrogen metabolism and electron transfer. This study demonstrated that CW-MFC fermentation broth addition can be a potential strategy for the disposal of secondary effluent and bioelectricity generation.

Abstract:Integrating microbial fuel cells (MFC) into constructed wetland systems (CW) has been an efficient wastewater treatment to improve the pollutants removal and regenerate power energy. This study fabricated a sludge biochar material (SBM) to sequestrate the carbon of residual sludge. Thereafter used SBM and modified SBM as the substrate materials to construct three groups of CW-MFC for decreasing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. The water quality improvement in removal efficiency achieved (2.59 %, 3.10 %, 5.21 % for COD; 3.31 %, 3.60 %, 6.71 % for TN; 1.80 %, 7.38 %, 4.93 % for TP) by the application of MFC, SBM, and modified SBM in wastewater treatment, respectively. Additionally, the reduction in global warming potential (GWP) realized 17.2 %, 42.2 %, and 64.4 % resulting from these applications. The carbon flow and fate diagrams showed MFC shifted the gas phase‑carbon flow from CH4 to CO2, and SBM promoted this shift trends. Microbial diversity indicated enrichment of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB), denitrifying bacteria, and phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) by SBM. Metabolic pathways analysis showed that introduction of MFC and SBM exhibited significant increases of key functional genes in metabolic pathway of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). This study highlights the benefit of CW-MFC in and provides a new strategy for removing pollutants and abating GHG emissions in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CWL-MFCs) are eco-friendly and sustainable technology, simultaneously implementing contaminant removal and electricity production. According to intensive research over the last five years, this review on the operation mechanism was conducted for in-depth understanding and application guidance of CWL-MFCs. The electrochemical mechanism based on anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction is the core for improved treatment in CWL-MFCs compared to CWLs. As the dominant bacterial community, the abundance and gene-expression patterns of electro-active bacteria responds to electrode potentials and contaminant loadings, further affecting operational efficiency of CWL-MFCs. Plants benefit COD and N removal by supplying oxygen for aerobic degradation and rhizosphere secretions for microorganisms. Multi-electrode configuration, carbon-based electrodes and rich porous substrates affect transfer resistance and bacterial communities. The possibilities of CWL-MFCs targeting at recalcitrant contaminants like flame retardants and interchain interactions among effect components need systematic research.

Nutrient Removal Process and Cathodic Microbial Community Composition in Integrated Vertical-Flow Constructed Wetland – Microbial Fuel Cells Filled With Different Substrates

Abstract:An integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell system (CW-MFC), consisting of an up-flow chamber and a down-flow chamber, was constructed to treat synthetic sewage wastewater. The performance of CW-MFCs filled with different substrates [i.e., ceramsite (CM-A), quartz (CM-B), and zeolite (CM-C) granules] under various hydraulic retention times (HRTs, 7.6, 4.0, and 2.8 d) was evaluated. Efficient and stable nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removals were observed in CM-A under different HRTs, while the voltage outputs of the CW-MFCs was greatly reduced as the HRTs decreased. With an HRT of 2.8 d, the ammonium (NH4+-N) and orthophosphate (PO43–-P) removal efficiencies in CM-A were as high as 93.8 and 99.6%, respectively. Bacterial community analysis indicates that the N removal in the cathode area of CM-A could potentially benefit from the appearance of nitrifying bacteria (e.g., Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira) and relatively high abundance of denitrifiers involved in simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (e.g., Hydrogenophaga, Zoogloea, and Dechloromonas) and denitrifying sulfide removal (e.g., Thauera). Additionally, the difference in N removal efficiency among the CW-MFCs could be partly explained by higher iron (Fe) content in milled ceramsite granules and higher abundance of denitrifiers with nitrate reduction and ferrous ions oxidation capabilities in CM-A compared with that in CM-B and CM-C. Efficient PO43–-P removal in CM-A was mainly ascribed to substrate adsorption and denitrifying phosphorus (P) removal. Concerning the substantial purification performance in CM-A, ceramsite granules could be used to improve the nutrient removal efficiency in integrated vertical-flow CW-MFC.

Potential of Novel Wastewater Treatment System Featuring Microbial Fuel Cell to Generate Electricity and Remove Pollutants

Abstract:A new design of a pilot-scale constructed wetland managed with a membraneless microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) was tested here to assess its potential to generate electricity and remove pollutants under different operating conditions. In the CW-MFC, the cathode was half vertically inserted into the matrixes of constructed wetland (CW) and half exposed to the air to benefit from both surrounding wetland plant growth and the atmosphere thereby ensured its demand for oxygen as well. A series of periodic and regular voltages were obtained after four cycles of wastewater treatment in the batch flow experiment with influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) 228 mg/L. The maximum voltage output (0.588 +/- 0.01 V) for these four cycles lasted for 34, 35, 37 and 42 h, respectively. A steady set of maximum voltage (0.529 V) outputted over a wetland operation period of 15 days in the continuous flow experiment with the hydraulic retention time of 10 h. The maximum power density was 9.6 mW/m(2) and the maximum current density was 55 mA/m(2) according to the cathode area. Under batch flow mode, the COD removal rate was 91.2% and the outstanding removal rates of total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen and total phosphorus appeared ranging between 95% and 99% while electricity generated from the CW-MFC. The influence of temperature on electricity generation was investigated and the result showed that the maximum voltage output values were inversely relative to the lasting duration of the voltage. Influent COD concentrations also affected the highest voltage output and continuous electricity generation of CW-MFC, and the higher initial COD concentration elevated the electricity generation. Thus, the new CW-MFC has high potentials not only of bioelectricity generation but also of the high pollutant removal rates. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Bio-clogging mitigation in constructed wetland using microbial fuel cells with novel hybrid air-photocathode

Abstract:Excessive accumulation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in constructed wetland (CW) substrate can lead to bio-clogging and affect the long-term stable operation of CW. In this study, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was coupled with air-photocathode to mitigate CW bio-clogging by enhancing the micro-electric field environment. Because TiO2/biochar could catalyze and accelerate oxygen reduction reaction, further promoting the gain of electric energy, the electricity generation of the tandem CW-photocatalytic fuel cell (CW-PFC) reached 90.78 mW m-3. After bio-clogging was mitigated in situ in tandem CW-PFC, the porosity of CW could be restored to about 62.5 % of the initial porosity, and the zeta potential of EPS showed an obvious increase (-14.98 mV). The removal efficiencies of NH4+-N and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in tandem CW-PFC were respectively 31.8 ± 7.2 % and 86.1 ± 6.8 %, higher than those in control system (21.1 ± 11.0 % and 73.3 ± 5.6 %). Tandem CW-PFC could accelerate the degradation of EPS into small molecules (such as aromatic protein) by enhancing the electron transfer. Furthermore, microbiome structure analysis indicated that the enrichment of characteristic microorganisms (Anaerovorax) for degradation of protein-related pollutants, and electroactive bacteria (Geobacter and Trichococcus) promoted EPS degradation and electron transfer. The degradation of EPS might be attributed to the up-regulation of the abundances of carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. This study provided a promising new strategy for synergic mitigation and prevention of bio-clogging in CW by coupling with MFC and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands and microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) are a promising green and sustainable wastewater treatment technology. However, the power production performance of CW-MFCs has long been limited by low-performance cathodes. In this study, we designed two CW-MFC systems using cheap and readily available sewage sludge biochar (SSB) as the substrate for the experimental units. The integration of SSB significantly facilitated the removal of chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Moreover, SSB enhanced the electrochemical performance of the air cathode, resulting in higher power density (44.64 mW/m 2 ) and lower internal resistance (900.00 Ω) compared to gravel-integrated CW-MFC (0.88 mW/m 2 , 2057.14 Ω). In addition, a typical electroactive bacterium--- Geobacter was enriched in the SSB-integrated CW-MFC system. The iron oxides and graphic nitrogen of the SSB favor the growth of Geobacter , and the redox-active groups on the surface of SSB accelerate the extracellular electron transfer process, contributing to the enhancement of treatment performance. Meanwhile, the metal and nitrogen doping improves the oxygen reduction reaction activity and conductivity of SSB, enhancing the cathode area of CW-MFC and improving the energy recovery. Overall, these results demonstrated that SSB-integrated CW-MFC can be a competitive technology for effective wastewater treatment and energy recovery.

Abstract:The persistent challenge of water pollution, exacerbated by slow progress in ecofriendly technologies and accumulating pollutants, underscores the need for innovative solutions. Constructed Wetland Microbial Fuel Cell (CW-MFC) emerges as an intriguing environmental technology capable of adressing this issue by eliminating contaminants from wastewater while simultaneously producing green energy as an additional bonus. In recent years, CW-MFC technology has gained attention due to its sustainability and promising prospects for a circular waste-free industry. However, due to various technological and biological challenges, it has not yet achieved wide-scale application. This review examines the current state of CW-MFC technology and identifies both biotic and abiotic strategies for optimization through operational and structural improvements affecting biocomponents. Our review highlights several key findings: (1) Plants play an important role in reducing the system's inner resistance through mechanisms such as radial oxygen loss, evapotranspiration, and high photosynthetic flow, which facilitate electroactive bacteria and affect redox potential. (2) Plant characteristics such as root porosity, phloem and aerenchyma development, chlorophyll content, and plant biomass are key indicators of CW-MFC performance and significantly impact both pollutant removal and energy harvesting. (3) We expand the criteria for selecting suitable plants to include mesophytes and C3 pollutant-tolerant species, in addition to traditional aquatic and C4 plants. Additionally, the review presents several technical approaches that enhance CW-MFC efficiency: (1) design optimization, (2) use of novel materials, and (3) application of external electrical fields, aeration, light, and temperature adjustments. CW-MFCs are capable of nearly complete elimination of a wide range of contaminants, including organic matter (84 % ± 10), total nitrogen (80 % ± 7) and phosphorus (79 % ± 18) compounds, metals (86 % ± 10), pharmaceuticals (87 % ± 7), dyes (90 % ± 8), and other complex pollutants, while generating green energy. We hope our findings will be useful in optimizing CW-MFC design and providing insights for researchers aiming to advance the technology and facilitate its future scaling.
Energy Production in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) during the Biological Treatment of Wastewater from Soilless Plant Cultivation

Abstract:The management of drainage water (DW), which is produced during the soilless cultivation of plants, requires a high energy input. At the same time, DW is characterized by a high electrolytic conductivity, a high redox potential, and is also stable and putrefaction-free. In the present study, the natural properties of drainage water and a biotreatment method employing an external organic substrate in the form of citric acid (C/N 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) were utilized for energy recovery by a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The cathode chamber served as a retention tank for DW with a carbon felt electrode fixed inside. In turn, a biological reactor with biomass attached to the filling in the form of carbon felt served as the anode chamber. The filling also played the role of an electrode. The chambers were combined by an ion exchange membrane, forming an H letter-shaped system. They were then connected in an external electrical circuit with a resistance of 1k Ω. The use of a flow-through system eliminated steps involving aeration and mixing of the chambers' contents. Citric acid was found to be an efficient organic substrate. The voltage of the electric current increased from 44.34 ± 60.92 mV to 566.06 ± 2.47 mV for the organic substrate dose expressed by the C/N ratio ranging from 1.0 to 2.0. At the same time, the denitrification efficiency ranged from 51.47 ± 9.84 to 95.60 ± 1.99% and that of dephosphatation from 88.97 ± 2.41 to 90.48 ± 1.99% at C/N from 1.0 to 2.0. The conducted studies confirmed the possibility of recovering energy during the biological purification of drainage water in a biofilm reactor. The adopted solution only required the connection of electrodes and tanks with an ion-selective membrane. Further research should aim to biologically treat DW followed by identification of the feasibility of energy recovery by means of MFC.

Abstract:This study investigated synthetic wastewater treatment under low inflow C/N ratio and characterized NO3−–N-transforming and electricity-producing bacteria in a multi-anode tidal constructed wetland–microbial fuel cell (TFCW–MFC). The optimal concurrent average removal rates of NH4+–N and NO3−–N were 73% and 78%, respectively, under a flood/rest/flood time of 4 h/2 h/4 h in "tide" mode accompanied by one recirculation. The lowest NO3−–N concentration among all anodes was observed when the electrode gap was 45 cm. Similarly, the 45 cm anode exhibited selective enrichment of Variovorax and Azoarcus. Correction analysis showed that the high relative abundance of Azoarcus was crucial in enhancing NO3−–N removal, and the internal resistance significantly decreased as the relative abundance of Acidovorax increased These results suggest that NO3−–N removal and bioelectricity generation can be promoted in a TFCW–MFC with limited carbon by improving the culture conditions for specific genera.

Abstract:The research on constructed wetland (CW) and microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been separate studies worldwide with crucial achievements being made in both fields. Due to environmentally friendly feature (of CW) and rich microbial population and excellent electrode catalytic activity (of MFC), CW and MFC have their own anticipated application prospect in wastewater purification and biological electricity generation. More significantly, the idea of embedding MFC into CW to form CW-MFC expands the scope for both of them and this has received much interest in recent years due to its striking features of sewage treatment efficiency, electricity generation, sustainability, and environmental friendliness. The increasing interest and the lack of soul of CW-MFC emerging to the new researchers reflect the need to recall the idea and summarize its development with regard to achieving its reality via some key issues This forms the basis of the paper. The paper also includes how to enhance the efficiency of electricity generation and supplement energy consumption, the degradation of emerging pollutants, and the degradation mechanism as well as the potential joint application of CW-MFC with other treatment technique. A mass of CW-MFC design parameters has been synthesized from the literature. Challenges and potential directions of CW-MFC in the future are prospected. It is expected that the paper can serve as a linkage for bridging knowledge gaps for further studies of CW-MFC.

Abstract:The constructed wetland coupled with a microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) is a wastewater treatment process that combines contaminant removal with electricity production, making it an environmentally friendly option. This hybrid system primarily relies on anaerobic bioprocesses for wastewater treatment, although other processes such as aerobic bioprocesses, plant uptake, and chemical oxidation also contribute to the removal of organic matter and nutrients. CW-MFCs have been successfully used to treat various types of wastewater, including urban, pharmaceutical, paper and pulp industry, metal-contaminated, and swine wastewater. In CW-MFC, macrophytes such as rice plants, Spartina angalica, Canna indica, and Phragmites australis are used. The treatment process can achieve a chemical oxygen demand removal rate of between 80 and 100%. Initially, research focused on enhancing power generation from CW-MFC, but recent studies have shifted towards resource recovery from wastewater. This review paper provides an overview of the development of constructed wetland microbial fuel cell technology, from its early stages to its current applications. The paper also highlights research gaps and potential directions for future research.

Abstract:The availability of clean water and the depletion of non-renewable resources provide challenges to modern society. The widespread use of conventional wastewater treatment necessitates significant financial and energy expenditure. Constructed Wetland Microbial Fuel Cells (CW-MFCs), a more recent alternative technology that incorporates a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) inside a Constructed Wetland (CW), can alleviate these problems. By utilizing a CW’s inherent redox gradient, MFC can produce electricity while also improving a CW’s capacity for wastewater treatment. Electroactive bacteria in the anaerobic zone oxidize the organic contaminants in the wastewater, releasing electrons and protons in the process. Through an external circuit, these electrons travel to the cathode and produce electricity. Researchers have demonstrated the potential of CW-MFC technology in harnessing bio-electricity from wastewater while achieving pollutant removal at the lab and pilot scales, using both domestic and industrial wastewater. However, several limitations, such as inadequate removal of nitrogen, phosphates, and toxic organic/inorganic pollutants, limits its applicability on a large scale. In addition, the whole system must be well optimized to achieve effective wastewater treatment along with energy, as the ecosystem of the CW-MFC is large, and has diverse biotic and abiotic components which interact with each other in a dynamic manner. Therefore, by modifying important components and optimizing various influencing factors, the performance of this hybrid system in terms of wastewater treatment and power generation can be improved, making CW-MFCs a cost-effective, cleaner, and more sustainable approach for wastewater treatment that can be used in real-world applications in the future.

A technique for the reconstruction of lower eyelid marginal defects

Abstract:Objectives: To report on a new one-step technique for the reconstruction of lower eyelid marginal defects. Method: Retrospective case series of 5 patients with lower eyelid basal cell carcinomas abutting the eyelid margin. In all patients, the tumour was radically excised with a 3-mm clear cutaneous margin and a 2-mm tarsoconjunctival margin under frozen section control. Defect size ranged from 12 to 22 mm horizontally and from 8 to 9 mm vertically. For eyelid reconstruction, the 2-mm residual lower lid tarsus was advanced superiorly on a conjunctival pedicle and sutured into the posterior lamella defect. The anterior lamella was reconstructed with orbicularis muscle advancement and a free skin graft from the ipsilateral upper eyelid. The outcome following surgery was assessed using a subjective scoring system with 4 subsequent grades (poor, adequate, good, excellent). Results: At 1 week postoperatively, adequate viability of the grafts was noted in all patients. One patient developed transient punctate epithelial keratopathy. After a mean follow-up of 10 months (range 1 to 21 months) the outcome was “poor” in 0 patients, “adequate” in 0 cases, “good” in 1 case and “excellent” in 4 cases. Conclusion: Reconstruction of small to large lower lid marginal defects with local tarsoconjunctival flap advancement combined with orbicularis muscle advancement and free skin graft is associated with a good functional and cosmetic outcome and limited donor-site morbidity.

Abstract:Because of the importance of the hydroxamic acid functional group in zinc protease inhibitors, we have measured the stability constants of the ternary complex LMG, where L is series of tridentate and tetradentate ligands containing amino, carboxylate, pyridyl, and/or imidazolyl groups as enzyme models and G is the guest molecule, acetohydroxamate or N-methylacetohydroxamate. All measurements were determined by pH titration which gave reproducible and reasonable results. A general correlation between binding of LMG and that of LM showed ligands that strongly chelated zinc gave less LMG formation. Surprisingly, no correlation was observed between ligand charge and LMG formation even though the guest, acetohydroxamate, is anionic. The pH value of the maximum formation of the ternary complex is also correlated to the acidity of zinc-bound water; more acidic zinc-bound water results in a maximum ternary complex formation at lower pH value.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells implemented in constructed wetlands (CW-MFCs), albeit a relatively new technology still under study, have shown to improve treatment efficiency of urban wastewater. So far the vast majority of CW-MFC systems investigated were designed as lab-scale systems working under rather unrealistic hydraulic conditions using synthetic wastewater. The main objective of this work was to quantify CW-MFCs performance operated under different conditions in a more realistic setup using meso-scale systems with horizontal flow fed with real urban wastewater. Operational conditions tested were organic loading rate (4.9+-1.6, 6.7+-1.4 and 13.6+-3.2 g COD/m2.day) and hydraulic regime (continuous vs intermittent feeding) as well as different electrical connections: CW control (conventional CW without electrodes), open-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit between anode and cathode not connected) and closed-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit connected). Eight horizontal subsurface flow CWs were operated for about four months. Each wetland consisted of a PVC reservoir of 0.193 m2 filled with 4/8 mm granitic riverine gravel. All wetlands had intermediate sampling points for gravel and interstitial liquid sampling. The CW-MFCs were designed as three MFCs incorporated one after the other along the flow path of the CWs. Results showed no significant differences between tested organic loading rates, hydraulic regimes or electrical connections, however, on average, systems operated in closed-circuit CW-MFC mode under continuous flow outperformed the other experimental conditions. Closed-circuit CW-MFC compared to conventional CW control systems showed around 5% and 22% higher COD and ammonium removal, respectively. Correspondingly, overall bacteria activity, as measured by the fluorescein diacetate technique, was higher (4% to 34%) in closed-circuit systems when compared to CW control systems.
High-Efficient Nitrogen Removal And Its Microbiological Mechanism Of A Novel Carbon Self-Sufficient Constructed Wetland

Abstract:The low denitrification efficiency in constructed wetlands (CWs) was a crucial problem for treating the carbon-deficient wastewater. To further improve the N removal from the tailwater of wastewater treatment plant, the plant fermentation liquid (PFL, derived from wetland plant litter in our CWs) as a supplementary carbon source was used in horizontal subsurface-flow CW amended with Fe-modified biochar (FeB-HSCW) to increase the influent C/N ratio and drive the denitrification. The N removal performance of FeB-HSCW was investigated under various influent C/N ratios for achieving high-efficient N removal. The excellent removal rates of COD (89.35%), NO3--N (97.48%), TN (93.76%), NH4+-N (>16%) and NO2--N (>98%) were obtained in FeB-HSCW at the C/N of 9.0. When the large amount of PFL was added into the systems, the amount of 16S rRNA genes from bacteria and anammox bacteria, as well as of denitrification and anammox functional genes (narG, napA, nirS, nirK, qnorB, cnorB, nosZ-I, nosZ-II and hzsA) were statistically greater in FeB-HSCW than those in other two systems (C-HSCW, without biochar and FeB; B-HSCW, amended with biochar). However, the abundances of nitrification genes (amoA of AOA, amoA of AOB and nxrA) were the lowest in FeB-HSCW after adding the PFL. High-throughput analysis for 16S rRNA gene revealed that the PFL coupled with FeB remarkably optimized the structure of bacterial community. The FeB-HSCW added with sufficient PFL was enriched with the highest abundances of norank_p_Saccharibacteria, Bacillus, Geobacter, Pseudolabrys, Mizugakiibacter, Bradyrhizobium and norank_f_ Planctomycetaceae which were capable of autotrophic and/or heterotrophic denitrification as well as anammox, whereas the distribution of nitrifiers (Nitrospira) was the lowest. Overall, this work illustrated that the PFL coupled with FeB-HSCW was a feasible and effective carbon self-sufficient HSCW for the high-efficient N removal from wastewater with low C/N ratiomainly via the autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification and anammox.
