Abstract:In this contribution, we present a simple and sensitive method for detecting Cu2+ based on the Cu(2+)-induced aggregation of silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) capped with chitosan. Chitosan could be adsorbed on the surface of AgNPs, and keep AgNPs against aggregation. However, in the presence of Cu2+, AgNPs aggregate again, the absorption decreases, and the color changes from yellow to colorless, which is due to the coordination of Cu2+ and chitosan. The depressed intensity (deltaA) is in proportion to the concentration of Cu2+ over the range of 3.33-40.0 microM with the limit of detection (3sigma) of 10.25 nM, the recovery of 92.60-104.20% and R.S.D. of 0.94-4.62%. The advantages of this method are simple, sensitive and low cost.

Abstract:Abstract Recent advances in surface-patterning techniques of liquid crystals have enabled the precise creation of topological defects, which promise a variety of emergent applications. However, the manipulation and application of these defects remain limited. Here, we harness the moiré effect to engineer topological defects in patterned nematic liquid crystal cells. Specifically, we combine simulation and experiment to examine a nematic cell confined between two substrates of periodic surface anchoring patterns; by rotating one surface against the other, we observe a rich variety of highly tunable, novel topological defects. These defects are shown to guide the three-dimensional self-assembly of colloids, which can conversely impact defects by preventing the self-annihilation of loop-defects through jamming. Finally, we demonstrate that certain nematic moiré cells can engender arbitrary shapes represented by defect regions. As such, the proposed simple twist method enables the design and tuning of mesoscopic structures in liquid crystals, facilitating applications including defect-directed self-assembly, material transport, micro-reactors, photonic devices, and anti-counterfeiting materials.

Abstract:Orientation of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) around a topological defect is expressed by the equation, ψ = s ϕ + ϕ 0 , where ψ , s , ϕ and ϕ 0 are the director spatial phase, topological charge, azimuthal angle and a spatial phase shift, respectively. Conventionally, defect array is modelled by simply adding the ψ fields of all the defects. The resultant array is a combination of the defects imposed by design ( ψ s ) and the defects due to the lattice geometry ( ψ g ). However, defect arrays generated in homeotropic confinement show hyperbolic hedgehogs ( ψ h ) between the ψ s s, which are out of the scope of the conventional model. In this research, two-dimensional defect 'crystals' with various lattice structures (square and hexagonal), various defect shapes (radial or circular) and various lattice constants (pixel size) are generated by pixelated patterned electrodes in homeotropic NLC cells. The results verify the two selection rules, 1) The total s must be zero, 2) ϕ 0 must be a constant throughout the array, and a new model composed of ψ s , ψ g and ψ h is established. Calculation proves that the selected modelled array has minimum free energy. The ψ s - ψ g - ψ h model is versatile and easy to apply, which benefits the design of new topological defect arrays.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Topological defects (TDs) manifest in many condensed matter systems. In liquid crystals (LCs), they occur as point or line singularities in the otherwise smooth director profile. Engineered and controllable TDs are of great interest for functional optoelectronic devices; however, the formation mechanism in patterned devices is not fully understood. In this work, electrically addressable TDs in doped mixtures of prototypical n‐alkyl‐cyanobiphenyl LCs 4‐cyano‐4′‐pentylbiphenyl (5CB) and 4‐cyano‐4′‐octylbiphenyl (8CB) are focused on. Doping concentrations of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) are varied and the effect of varying the host LC properties (through binary 5CB:8CB mixtures) on defect formation is studied. In the results, a strong correlation between LC “fluidity” and the ease of defect array formation is presented, with 0.5 wt% CTAB‐doped 5CB giving the best controllability/uniformity of TDs at low‐threshold voltages. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the devices can be utilized as electrically switchable optical diffractive elements. In these findings, directions are mapped out that future studies can take in designing deterministic, electrically or magnetically tunable TD‐based photonic devices using LC systems.

Abstract:Guiding and dynamically modulating topological defects are critical challenges in defect engineering of liquid crystals. Here, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the transition dynamics and relative kinetic stability of defect patterns in two-dimensional nematic Gay–Berne liquid crystals confined within rectangular geometries. We observe the formation of various defect patterns including long-axis, diagonal, X-shaped, composite, and bend configurations under different confinement conditions. The competition between boundary effects and the uniformity of nematic orientation induces the continuous realignment of liquid crystal molecules, facilitating the spatially continuous transformation of defect patterns over time. This transition involves changes in both defect types and their locations, typically initiating from defect regions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the relative stability of these defect patterns can be effectively controlled by adjusting confinement parameters and external field conditions. Our findings provide fundamental insights into the transition kinetics of defect patterns in confined nematic liquid crystals, thereby enhancing our ability to manipulate topological defects for advanced applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A Klebsiella pneumoniae strain resistant to oxyimino cephalosporins was cultured from respiratory secretions of a patient suffering from nosocomial pneumonia in Kiel, Germany, in 1997. The isolate harbors a bla resistance gene located on a transmissible plasmid. An Escherichia coli transconjugant produces a β-lactamase with an isoelectric point of 7.7 and a resistance phenotype characteristic of an AmpC (class 1) β-lactamase except for low MICs of cephamycins. Thebla gene was cloned and sequenced. It encodes a protein of 386 amino acids with the active site serine of the S-X-X-K motif at position 64, as is characteristic for class C β-lactamases. Multiple alignment of the deduced amino acid sequence with 21 other AmpC β-lactamases demonstrates only very distant homology, reaching at maximum 52.3% identity for the chromosomal AmpC β-lactamase ofSerratia marcescens SR50. The β-lactamase ofK. pneumoniae KUS represents a new type of AmpC-class enzyme, for which we propose the designation ACC-1 (Ambler class C-1).

Abstract:Topological defects are a key concern in numerous branches of physics. It is meaningful to exploit the topological defect evolutions during the phase transitions of condensed matter. Here, via varying the initial azimuthal orientation of the square alignment lattice in a hybrid cell, the topological defect evolution of liquid crystal during the nematic (N)–smectic A (SmA) phase transition is investigated. The director fields surrounding ±1 point defects are manipulated by predesigning the initial azimuthal orientation. When further cooled to the SmA phase, spiral toric focal conic domain (TFCD) arrays are formed as a result of twisted deformation suppression and unique symmetry breaking after the phase transition. The variation in the azimuthal orientation causes the TFCDs to degenerate from infinite rotational symmetry to quadruple rotational symmetry, thus releasing new textures for the SmA phase. Landau–de Gennes numerical modeling is adopted to reproduce the director distributions in the N phase and reveal the evolution of the topological defects. This work enriches the knowledge on the self-organization of soft matter, enhances the capability for the manipulations of topological defects, and may inspire new intriguing applications.

Abstract:Smectic liquid crystals exhibit a remarkable ability to self-organize into a variety of textures, patterns, and arrays extending over large surface areas with microscale periodicity. These structures provide a useful platform for the bottom-up fabrication of microdevices and functional materials, such as microlens arrays and nanoparticle templates. Periodic structures appear in response to a conflict of director alignment created within the smectic film by external fields such as hybrid (planar-homeotropic) anchoring conditions at the film interfaces or an electric field applied normal to the surface anchoring direction. In this article, we review the formation, structure, and applications of one-dimensional (1d) patterns obtained in response to a director bend, typically induced by unidirectional hybrid anchoring conditions in thin films or under applied electric fields. Compared to lattices of focal conics, 1d patterns harbor an unusual array of topological defects, including disclination and dislocation lines, grain boundaries, and curvature walls, running along periodically spaced and bend-free cylindrical stacks of smectic layers. These defects, most of which have been described by Maurice Kleman, appear to drive the structural evolution of 1d patterns as a function of the film thickness. Under unidirectional hybrid anchoring, the defects are oriented perpendicular to the planar anchoring direction and provide highly anisotropic templates for building ordered networks of close-packed nanoparticles. Moreover, the array formation at the transition from the nematic to the smectic phase is intimately connected to the smectic phase frustration by bend distortions, producing an 'intermediate' smectic phase with partial penetration of the bend distortion through undercooled nematic domains.

Abstract:We suggest that tunable orientational nonlinearity of nematic liquid crystals can be employed for all-optical switching in periodic photonic structures with liquid-crystal defects. We consider a one-dimensional periodic structure of Si layers with a local defect created by infiltrating a liquid crystal into a pore, and demonstrate, by solving numerically a system of coupled nonlinear equations for the nematic director and the propagating electric field, that the light-induced Freedericksz transition can lead to a sharp switching and diode operation in the photonic devices.

Abstract:Stable array of point defects was generated in nematic liquid crystal. Point defects with topological charge of +1 and -1 (hedgehogs) were generated in vertically aligned liquid crystal cell. The hedgehogs were arranged in square or hexagonal arrays, and the shape of defect, such as radial or circular hedgehogs, were under the control of delicately patterned electrodes. Base on the two-dimensional defect array discovered in experiments, three-dimensional crystals of defects were postulated. The flux of the liquid crystal director field was summarized for each unit cell. The analysis showed that the crystal structure is periodic and stable if the total flux in a unit cell is zero. The surface and bulk topological charges of each unit cells were analyzed. The summation of topological charges of a unit cell obeys the topological rules of a homeotropic droplet. The hidden conservation laws of flux and topological charges in a soft crystal of defects were discovered, which can be implemented in templates for self-assembled micro-structure and tissue design. Most important of all, the conservation laws may answer why natural structures and tissues grow in to a particular shape and form.

The anti-leishmanial effect of Kalanchoe is mediated by nitric oxide intermediates

Abstract:We have previously shown that oral treatment with the leaf extract of the plant Kalanchoe pinnata (Kp) significantly decreases the lesion size and the parasite load in BALB/c mice infected with Leishmania amazonensis. Here we report on the mode of action of Kp, particularly on the induction of nitric oxide (NO) production by macrophages. We observed that Kp has no direct inhibitory activity on extracellular promastigotes, but effectively decreases the intracellular amastigote growth in a dose-related fashion. A 58% reduction in amastigote growth induced by 500 μg/ml Kp was associated with a 6-fold increase in the production of NO by the macrophages. IFN-γ synergistically enhanced the NO-stimulating effect of Kp in culture. Co-treatment with the inducible NO synthase enzyme inhibitor l-NG-monomethyl-arginine abolished the antileishmanial effect of Kp in vitro and in L. amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice. These results indicate that the protective effect of Kp in leishmaniasis may not be due to a direct effect on the parasite itself but rather to activation of the reactive nitrogen intermediates pathway of macrophages.

Abstract:Liquid crystals exhibit unique orientational and positional orders,granting them distinct physical properties that play a crucial role in the realm of condensed soft matter.The continuous symmetry breaking in ordered liquid crystal structures leads to the emergent of topological defects.The transformative mechanisms during phase transitions and ordered controlunder external fields have attracted intensive attentions.By manipulating the spatial scale,boundary conditions,and external field of the systems,liquid crystal molecules demonstrate diverse self-assembly behaviors during different thermodynamic processes,accompanied by the appearance of various topological defects,towards achieving the minimization of the system's free energy.However,further exploration on the ordered control and dynamic evolution of topological defects during liquid crystal phase transitions,the controlled transition behaviors and mechanisms under external field,as well as the applications of topological defects is highly required.This review presents the latestworks conducted by our group,who utilizes photoalignment technique to achieve high-precision programmable two-dimensional planar anchoring designs.Through guiding the three-dimensional arrangement of liquid crystal molecules via a two-dimensional photoalignment layer,the controlled and ordered large-area topological defects under different phases are achieved successfully.Leveraging the Landau-de Gennes theory,the research discloses the mechanisms of topological defects during phase transitions and explores the underlying principles,significantly enriching our understanding on self-assembly of ordered systems and paving the way for applications of topological defects.
Topological carnival: electrically-powered motions of toron crystallites in chiral liquid crystals

Abstract:Malleability of metals is an example of how dynamics of defects like dislocations induced by external stresses alters material properties and enables technological applications. However, these defects move merely to comply with the mechanical forces applied on macroscopic scales whereas the molecular and atomic building blocks behave like rigid particles. Here we demonstrate how motions of crystallites and defects between them can arise within the soft matter medium in an oscillating electric field applied to a chiral liquid crystal with polycrystalline quasi-hexagonal arrangements of self-assembled topological solitons called "torons". Periodic oscillations of electric field applied perpendicular to the plane of hexagonal lattices prompt repetitive shear-like deformations of the solitons, which synchronize the electrically-powered self-shearing directions. The temporal evolution of deformations upon turning voltage on and off is not invariant upon reversal of time, prompting lateral translations of the crystallites of torons within quasi-hexagonal periodically deformed lattices. We probe how these motions depend on voltage and frequency of oscillating field applied in an experimental geometry resembling that of liquid crystal displays. We study the inter-relations between synchronized deformations of the soft solitonic particles and their arrays and the ensuing dynamics and giant number fluctuations mediated by motions of crystallites, 5-7 defects pairs and grain boundaries in the orderly organizations of solitons. We discuss how our findings may lead to technological and fundamental science applications of dynamic self-assemblies of topologically protected but highly deformable particle-like solitons.

The defects may thus be expected to act as nucleation points for the phase transition upon heating beyond the bulk nematic stability range. Here we study this peculiar transition, theoretically and experimentally, for shells with two different configurations of four + 1/2 defects, finding that the defects act as the primary nucleation points if they are co-localized in each other's vicinity. If the defects are instead spread out across the shell, they again act as nucleation points, albeit not necessarily the primary ones. Abstract:Significance Many driven and active nematic fluids exhibit complex microstructures, but their characteristics and dynamics are poorly understood. We explore the structures emerging in a pressure-driven nematic lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal in a microfluidic channel. We show that twist-type topological defects spontaneously emerge under flow. Our single-shot quantitative polarization imaging method allows us to quantify the fluctuations of these defects, which we show to reflect the tumbling character of the liquid crystal. We report how the defect size is governed by the balance between nucleation and annihilation forces, a balance that can be tuned by the flow rate. Such control over the microstructure opens pathways for using these nematic materials in optical devices and to control assembly of biological systems.

Topological polymer dispersed liquid crystals with bulk nematic defect lines pinned to handlebody surfaces

Abstract:Polymer dispersed liquid crystals are a useful model system for studying the relationship between surface topology and defect structures. They are comprised of a polymer matrix with suspended spherical nematic drops and are topologically constrained to host defects of an elementary hedgehog charge per droplet, such as bulk or surface point defects or closed disclination loops. We control the genus of the closed surfaces confining such micrometer-sized nematic drops with tangential boundary conditions for molecular alignment imposed by the polymer matrix, allowing us to avoid defects or, on the contrary, to generate them in a controlled way. We show, both experimentally and through numerical modeling, that topological constraints in nematic microdrops can be satisfied by hosting topologically stable half-integer bulk defect lines anchored to opposite sides of handlebody surfaces. This enriches the interplay of topologies of closed surfaces and fields with nonpolar symmetry, yielding new unexpected configurations that cannot be realized in vector fields, having potential implications for topologically similar defects in cosmology and other fields.

Abstract:Of our interest are frustration-driven pattern generating mechanisms in systems which in bulk equilibrium display spatially homogeneous long-range orientational order in absence of perturbations. As testbed material, we select thermotropic nematic liquid crystals. In bulk, they exhibit weakly discontinuous order–disorder phase transformation on varying temperature where the ordered nematic phase features spatially uniform axial order along an arbitrary symmetry breaking direction. However, due to continuous symmetry breaking (CSB) the established order is extremely susceptible to various perturbations which are in real systems in general always present. We theoretically illustrate how diverse complex patterns could be excited. Particularly intriguing configurations could appear if topological defects are present that could be generated via CSB. Our analysis is based on a relatively simple Lebwohl–Lasher-type model in which we could get analytical insight into phenomena of our interest. Using it we illustrate history dependent early stage isotropic-nematic phase evolution and final patterns in presence of "impurities" (e.g., nanoparticles). We show how characteristic effective interaction characteristics predict qualitatively different emerging patterns. Our analysis is based on CSB which is ubiquitous in nature. Consequently, demonstrated mechanisms are expected to manifest also in other condensed matter systems whose ordered phase is formed via CSB. We illustrate how kinetics and impurities could impact key structural properties of the systems of our interest.
