Abstract:There is an elevated presence of mercury (Hg) in the biosphere because of anthropogenic activities. The resulting damage to ecosystems and human health increases dramatically when microorganisms produce highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). Total Hg (THg), MeHg and ancillary water chemistry were measured in two connected lakes, separated by a short stream stretch, before (1996, 1998 and 2003) and after (2007, 2009 and 2010) the removal of Hg-polluted pulp fiber sediment. Over the study period, there was a decrease in sulfate in the surface water of both lakes, presumably because of declining atmospheric sulfate deposition. Together, the reductions in OM, sulfate, and Hg, resulted in decreased MeHg concentrations as well as decreased MeHg:THg ratios in the bottom water overlying the sediment. There was also a reduction in zooplankton MeHg and fish total Hg in both lakes. Multiple regressions, using the bottom water data before and after remediation from both lakes, indicated that both the yearly maximum MeHg concentration [MeHg max ] and MeHg max :THg correlated positively with the simultaneously measured sulfate deficit (a proxy for microbial sulfate reduction) and inorganic Hg concentration (IHg = THg – MeHg). This may suggest that the removal of Hg and the decreased sulfate reduction not only led to a decrease in available Hg substrate for methylation but also disfavored the Hg methylation process. As opposed to sulfate deficit, other measurements reflecting heterotrophic microbial activity such as inorganic carbon (IC), ammonium (NH 4 + ), and iron (Fe) did not show significant correlations with MeHg or MeHg:THg when the data from both lakes were combined.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) contamination in the environment is a persistent issue as emissions from industry are ongoing and legacy cycling is prolonged. To quantify total mercury (total Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in lake sediments across a wide suite of temperate to subarctic lakes, measurements and modeling were conducted for 320 sites across Canada. Total Hg varied from 7 to 567 ng g−1 dry sediment with a mean (median) value of 148 (128) ng g−1 dry sediment, with lowest concentrations observed in eutrophic lakes of the Prairies and Boreal Plains. Average total Hg concentrations have increased twofold in contemporary sediments relative to their preindustrial pair. MeHg concentrations were generally low, with a mean of 0.8 ng g−1 dry sediment and this form representing on average 0.6% of the total contemporary mercury concentrations. Water column variables related to eutrophication were among the strongest predictors of contemporary total Hg, MeHg, and total Hg enrichment in the sediments. In lakes where sediment radiometric data were collected, contemporary total Hg accumulation rates were strongly related to longitude(+) and Hg atmospheric deposition(+). Latitude(−) and Hg atmospheric deposition(+) were the best predictors of MeHg accumulation rates. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter optical properties were key predictors of both total Hg concentrations and accumulation rates. Our work highlights the paramount importance of lake trophic state and the nature of organic matter as key predictors of lake sediment mercury metrics.

Abstract:Multifunctional lakes are highly susceptible to anthropogenic influences, potentially introducing exogenous pollutants or nutrients into aquatic sediments. This, in turn, affects the mercury (Hg) methylation in the sediments. This study was conducted in the Changshou Lake, a representative multifunctional lake in southwestern China, with a specific focus on investigating the Hg variations, the potential of Hg methylation, and the influential factors affecting the methylation process within sediments across different functional areas. The results revealed significant variations in total Hg concentrations between the ecological culture area (area I), the ecological tourism area (area II), and the wetland protection area (area III), suggesting the possibility of exogenous Hg introduction associated with human activities. Furthermore, sediments from areas I and II displayed a greater potential for Hg methylation. This was ascribed to the enhanced diversity and relative abundance of Hg-methylating microorganisms, especially Geobacteraceae , induced by elevated levels of dissolved organic carbon in these two areas from human activities like historical cage culture. This study provides evidence that anthropogenic activities enhance the process of Hg methylation in the sediments of multifunctional lakes, highlighting the necessity of implementing comprehensive scientific water quality management practices to mitigate the negative impacts of human influences on these unique ecosystems.

Abstract:Methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations in boreal headwater streams are influenced by complex natural processes and disturbances such as forestry management. Understanding drivers of MeHg within boreal streams in Ontario, Canada, is of particular interest as there are legacy MeHg concerns. However, models accounting for the complexity of underlying processes have not yet been developed. We assessed how catchment characteristics and stream water chemistry influence MeHg concentrations within 19 watersheds of the Dryden - Wabigoon Forest in Ontario, Canada, using a structural equation modelling (SEM) approach. Despite the study area encompassing a large variation of boreal forest watersheds in the Canadian Shield, our SEM had substantial explanatory power across the region (χ251 = 45.37, p-value = 0.70, R2 = 0.75). Nitrate concentrations (p-value <0.001), water temperature (p-value = 0.002), and the latent watershed characteristic (p-value <0.001) had a positive influence on MeHg concentrations once variable interactions were accounted. Due to the inherent strengths of applying an SEM approach, we describe two plausible pathways driving MeHg concentrations: 1) indirect effect of forest-derived nutrients increases in-situ MeHg production in Dryden - Wabigoon Forest streams, and 2) direct supply of MeHg from inundated soils following consistent precipitation and inundation events (i.e., fill, sit, and spill).

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems serve as an important carbon sink but also could be a hotspot that produces neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Although many studies have focused on mercury (Hg) contamination in this carbon-rich ecosystem, our understanding of the effects and mechanisms of the organic matter (OM) regulation of MeHg production in mangrove sediments is still limited. Here, we examined the effects of Hg contamination and OM enrichment on MeHg production in anoxic mangrove sediments and identified the major microbial guilds attending this process. The mangrove sediments possessed a high potential for producing MeHg, but this was counterbalanced by its rapid degradation. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) such as Desulfobacterales, Desulfovi-brionales, and Syntrophobacterales were the major methylators. OM diagenesis significantly changed the biogeochemical conditions, accelerating MeHg degradation in the sediments. The enhanced MeHg degradation could be attributed to the abundant sulfide produced during OM decomposition, which could potentially inhibit the Hg methylation by immobilization of inorganic Hg, abiotically degrade MeHg, and favor the non-mer- mediated degradation of MeHg by SRB. Our study provides both geochemical and microbial clues that can partly explain the low MeHg levels widely observed in mangrove sediments.
Mercury Methylation Genes Identified across Diverse Anaerobic Microbial Guilds in a Eutrophic Sulfate-Enriched Lake

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) methylation is a microbially mediated process that converts inorganic Hg into bioaccumulative, neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). The metabolic activity of methylating organisms is highly dependent on biogeochemical conditions, which subsequently influences MeHg production. However, our understanding of the ecophysiology of methylators in natural ecosystems is still limited. Here, we identified potential locations of MeHg production in the anoxic, sulfidic hypolimnion of a freshwater lake. At these sites, we used shotgun metagenomics to characterize microorganisms with the Hg-methylation gene hgcA. Putative methylators were dominated by hgcA sequences divergent from those in well-studied, confirmed methylators. Using genome-resolved metagenomics, we identified organisms with hgcA (hgcA+) within the Bacteroidetes and the recently described Kiritimatiellaeota phyla. We identified hgcA+ genomes derived from sulfate-reducing bacteria, but these accounted for only 22% of hgcA+ genome coverage. The most abundant hgcA+ genomes were from fermenters, accounting for over half of the hgcA gene coverage. Many of these organisms also mediate hydrolysis of polysaccharides, likely from cyanobacterial blooms. This work highlights the distribution of the Hg-methylation genes across microbial metabolic guilds and indicate that primary degradation of polysaccharides and fermentation may play an important but unrecognized role in MeHg production in the anoxic hypolimnion of freshwater lakes.
Influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics on dissolved mercury (Hg) species composition in sediment porewater of lakes from southwest China

Abstract:The origin and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in porewater of lake sediments is intricate and decisive for fate of pollutants including mercury (Hg). While there are many reports on the relationship between dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in aquatic systems, there are few in which DOM compositional properties, that may better explain the fate of Hg, have been the focus. In this study, porewaters from sediments of three lakes, Caihai Lake (CH), Hongfeng Lake (HF) and Wujiangdu Lake (WJD), all located in southwest China, were selected to test the hypothesis that DOM optical properties control the fate of Hg in aquatic ecosystems. Porewater DOM was extracted and characterized by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. A two end-member (autochthonous and allochthonous DOM) mixing model was used to unveil the origin of DOM in porewaters of the three lakes. Our results show a higher input of terrestrial DOM in the pristine lake CH, as compared to lakes HF and WJD lakes, which were both influenced by urban environments and enriched in autochthonous DOM. While the relationships between the concentrations of DOC and the different chemical forms of Hg forms were quite inconsistent, we found important links between specific DOM components and the fate of Hg in the three lakes. In particular, our results suggest that allochthonous, terrestrial DOM inhibits Hg(II) availability for Hg methylating micro-organisms. In contrast, autochthonous DOM seems to have been stimulated MeHg formation, likely by enhancing the activity of microbial communities. Indeed, DOM biodegradation experiments revealed that differences in the microbial activity could explain the variation in the concentration of MeHg. While relationships between concentrations of DOC and Hg vary among different sites and provide little information about Hg cycling, we conclude that the transport and transformation of Hg (e.g. the methylation process) are more strongly linked to DOM chemical composition and reactivity.

Abstract:Methylmercury (MeHg) production in aquatic ecosystems is a global concern because of its neurotoxic effect. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycling of Hg. However, owing to its complex composition, the effects of DOM on net MeHg production have not been fully understood. Here, the Hg isotope tracer technique combined with different DOM treatments was employed to explore the influences of DOM with divergent compositions on Hg methylation/demethylation and its microbial mechanisms in eutrophic lake waters. Our results showed that algae-derived DOM treatments enhanced MeHg concentrations by 1.42−1.53 times compared with terrestrial-derived DOM. Algae-derived DOM had largely increased the methylation rate constants by approximately 1−2 orders of magnitude compared to terrestrial-derived DOM, but its effects on demethylation rate constants were less pronounced, resulting in the enhancement of net MeHg formation. The abundance of hgcA and merB genes suggested that Hg-methylating and MeHg-demethylating microbiomes responded differently to DOM treatments. Specific DOM components (e.g., aromatic proteins and soluble microbial byproducts) were positively correlated with both methylation rate constants and the abundance of Hg-methylating microbiomes. Our results highlight that the DOM composition influences the Hg methylation and MeHg demethylation differently and should be incorporated into future Hg risk assessments in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Estuaries are important sites for mercury (Hg) methylation, with sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) thought to be the main Hg methylators. Distributions of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in mangrove sediment and sediment core from Jiulong River Estuary Provincial Mangrove Reserve, China were determined and the possible mechanisms of Hg methylation and their controlling factors in mangrove sediments were investigated. Microbiological and geochemical parameters were also determined. Results showed that SRB constitute a small fraction of total bacteria (TB) in both surface sediments and the profile of sediments. The content of THg, MeHg, TB, and SRB were (350 +/- 150) ng/g, (0.47 +/- 0.11) ng/g, (1.4 x10(11) +/- 4.1 x 10(9)) cfu/g dry weight (dw), and (5.0 x 10(6) +/- 2.7 x 10(6)) cfu/g dw in surficial sediments, respectively, and (240 +/- 24) ng/g, (0.30 +/- 0.15) ng/g, (1.9 x 10(11) +/- 4.2 x 10(10)) cfu/g dw, and (1.3 x 10(6) +/- 2.0 x 10(6)) cfu/g dw in sediment core, respectively. Results showed that THg, MeHg, TB, MeHg/THg, salinity and total sulfur (TS) increased with depth, but total organic matter (TOM), SRB, and pH decreased with depth. Concentrations of MeHg in sediments showed significant positive correlation with THg, salinity, TS, and MeHg/THg, and significant negative correlation with SRB, TOM, and pH. It was concluded that other microbes, rather than SRB, may also act as main Hg methylators in mangrove sediments.
Methylmercury degradation by hot spring sulfur-linked microbial communities as a dominant pathway in regulating mercury speciation

Abstract:Sulfidic hot springs harbor unique microbial communities and are important in mercury (Hg) species transformations, although the fine scale drivers of these processes remain poorly understood. Here we studied Hg speciation in water, biofilms, and sediment across three sampling seasons in a French sulfidic hot spring with low Hg concentrations. Microbial Hg species methylation and demethylation potentials were evaluated using incubation experiments with species-specific Hg isotope tracers. Temporal variation in inorganic Hg (iHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water, biofilm, and sediment was observed. The incubation of microbial communities in biofilms and sediment under dark conditions exhibited low iHg methylation potentials, whereas a significant extent of biotic MeHg demethylation to oxidized iHg was found in relation to MeHg concentrations. Results from microbial diversity (16S rDNA) and the metabolic inhibition experiments suggest an important role of sulfur-linked bacterial metabolism dynamics. Specifically, sulfate-reducers and anoxygenic phototrophs were important factors in the regulation of MeHg concentrations in our study site. Overall, the observed dominance of microbial MeHg demethylation demonstrates a strong Hg detoxification capacity in sulfidic aquatic environments.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) contaminated sediments can be significant sources of Hg in aquatic ecosystems and, through re-emission processes, to the atmosphere. Transformation and release of Hg may be enhanced by various sediment perturbation processes, and controlling biogeochemical factors largely remain unclear. We investigated how rates of Hg transformations in pulp-fiber enriched sediment contaminated by Hg from chlor-alkali industry were controlled by (i) transient redox-changes in sulfur and iron chemistry, (ii) the chemical speciation and solubility of Hg, and (iii) the sources and characteristics of organic matter (OM). Sediment-bottom water microcosm systems were exposed to four combinations of air and nitrogen gas for a total time of 24 h. The treatments were: 24 h N-2, 0.5 h air + 23.5 h N-2, 4 h air + 20 h N-2 and 24 h of air exposure. As a result of these treatments, microcosms spanned a wide range of redox potential, as reflected by the dissolved sulfide concentration range of <= 0.3-97 mu M. Four different chemical species of inorganic divalent Hg (Hg-II) and methyl mercury (MeHg), enriched in different Hg isotope tracers, were added to the microcosms: 201 Hg(NO3)(2)(aq), Hg-202(II) adsorbed to OM (Hg-202(II)-OM(ads)), Hg-198(II) as microcrystalline metacinnabar (beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s)) and (MeHgCl)-Hg-204(aq). Microcosm systems were composed of bottom water mixed with sediment taken at 0-2, 0-5 and 0-10 cm depth intervals. The composition of OM varied with sediment depth such that compared to deeper sediment, the 0-2 cm depth-interval had a 2-fold higher contribution of labile OM originating from algal and terrestrial inputs, serving as metabolic electron-donors for microorganisms. The potential methylation rate constant (k(meth)) of Hg tracers and net formation of ambient MeHg (MeHg/THg molar ratio) increased up to 50% and 400%, respectively at intermediate oxidative conditions, likely because of an observed 2-fold increase in sulfate concentration stimulating the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria with a capability of methylating Hg-II. Due to differences in Hg-II water-sediment partitioning, k(meth) varied by a factor of 11-70 for the different isotope-enriched Hg tracers. The chemical form of Hg-II was a major controlling factor for k(meth) and its response to the resuspension-oxidation of the system. The beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s) tracer had the lowest k(meth) and it was mainly constrained by redox-driven Hg-II solubility. The Hg-202(II)-OM(ads) tracer showed an intermediate value on k(meth). It was controlled by both Hg-II solubility and availability of electron donors and acceptors, regulating bacterial activity. The Hg-201(NO3)(2)(aq) tracer had the highest value on k(meth) which was limited mainly by bacterial activity. The k(meth) was up to a factor of 3 higher in the 0-2 cm sediment depth-interval than in 0-5 and 0-10 cm intervals due to a larger contribution of labile OM in the 0-2 cm sediment. Reduction of Hg-II to Hg-0 followed by volatilization exclusively occurred at high sulfidic conditions in the top 0-2 cm sediment. Aromatic moieties of terrestrial OM, present mainly in the top sediment, is suggested to control the reduction of Hg-II. The Hg-0 volatilization rate constant for the Hg-202(II)-OM (ads) tracer exceeded that for beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s) by one order of magnitude. Our results suggest that contaminated sediments posing a high risk for reactivation of legacy Hg following transient redox resuspension events are characterized by depletion of sulfate in the sediment porewater prior to resuspension, predominance of Hg-II species with solubility exceeding that of crystalline beta-HgS(s), and conditions promoting in situ formation and/ or import of labile OM from algal and terrestrial sources. Water-level fluctuations influence sediment porewater chemistry and methylmercury production in a flood-control reservoir

Abstract:Reservoirs typically have elevated fish mercury (Hg) levels compared to natural lakes and rivers. A unique feature of reservoirs is water-level management which can result in sediment exposure to the air. The objective of this study is to identify how reservoir water-level fluctuations impact Hg cycling, particularly the formation of the more toxic and bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg). Total-Hg (THg), MeHg, stable isotope methylation rates and several ancillary parameters were measured in reservoir sediments (including some in porewater and overlying water) that are seasonally and permanently inundated. The results showed that sediment and porewater MeHg concentrations were over 3-times higher in areas experiencing water-level fluctuations compared to permanently inundated sediments. Analysis of the data suggest that the enhanced breakdown of organic matter in sediments experiencing water-level fluctuations has a two-fold effect on stimulating Hg methylation: 1) it increases the partitioning of inorganic Hg from the solid phase into the porewater phase (lower log Kd values) where it is more bioavailable for methylation; and 2) it increases dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the porewater which can stimulate the microbial community that can methylate Hg. Sulfate concentrations and cycling were enhanced in the seasonally inundated sediments and may have also contributed to increased MeHg production. Overall, our results suggest that reservoir management actions can have an impact on the sediment-porewater characteristics that affect MeHg production. Such findings are also relevant to natural water systems that experience wetting and drying cycles, such as floodplains and ombrotrophic wetlands.
Non-mercury methylating microbial taxa are integral to understanding links between mercury methylation and elemental cycles in marine and freshwater sediments

Abstract:The goal of this study was to explore the role of non-mercury (Hg) methylating taxa in mercury methylation and to identify potential links between elemental cycles and Hg methylation. Statistical approaches were utilized to investigate the microbial community and biochemical functions in relation to methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in marine and freshwater sediments. Sediments were collected from the methylation zone (top 15 cm) in four Hg-contaminated sites. Both abiotic (e.g., sulfate, sulfide, iron, salinity, total organic matter, etc.) and biotic factors (e.g., hgcA, abundances of methylating and non-methylating taxa) were quantified. Random forest and stepwise regression were performed to assess whether non-methylating taxa were significantly associated with MeHg concentration. Co-occurrence and functional network analyses were constructed to explore associations between taxa by examining microbial community structure, composition, and biochemical functions across sites. Regression analysis showed that approximately 80% of the variability in sediment MeHg concentration was predicted by total mercury concentration, the abundances of Hg methylating taxa, and the abundances of the non-Hg methylating taxa. The co-occurrence networks identified Paludibacteraceae and Syntrophorhabdaceae as keystone non Hg methylating taxa in multiple sites, indicating the potential for syntrophic interactions with Hg methylators. Strong associations were also observed between methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria, which were likely symbiotic associations. The functional network results suggested that non-Hg methylating taxa play important roles in sulfur respiration, nitrogen respiration, and the carbon metabolism-related functions methylotrophy, methanotrophy, and chemoheterotrophy. Interestingly, keystone functions varied by site and did not involve carbon- and sulfur-related functions only. Our findings highlight associations between methylating and non-methylating taxa and sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen cycles in sediment methylation zones, with implications for predicting and understanding the impact of climate and land/sea use changes on Hg methylation.

XX:XXX–XXX.Profundal lake sediment is an important site of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) production by anaerobic bacteria. This study tracked sediment MeHg cycling in hypereutrophic Hodges Reservoir, in the United States. Sediment-associated MeHg was most elevated in the early spring during moderately reduced conditions. In the late spring, MeHg and iron were released into hypolimnetic water during the progression from iron-reducing to sulfate-reducing conditions at the sediment–water interface. A decrease in porewater sulfate in the early summer indicated enhanced sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) activity and was associated with sediment buildup of MeHg, likely due to enhanced sorption to iron sulfides. Depletion of sulfate in the sediment during the fall corresponded with a substantial decrease in both sediment and water-column MeHg, suggesting that methanogenic conditions led to enhanced MeHg degradation. Shortly afterward, MeHg increased in the hypolimnion, indicating an upward shift in the zone of SRB methylation. Our study suggests 2 "hot moments" of MeHg entry into the water column, where it is susceptible to uptake into the pelagic food web: a spring window of mildly reduced conditions that promote MeHg release from sediment, and a fall window where MeHg is produced in the upper hypolimnion. These hot moments may potentially be managed to lower mercury bioaccumulation via redox enhancement of the profundal zone with approaches such as bottom water oxygenation, which began operation in Hodges Reservoir in 2020. Key factors influencing Hg levels and trends in unperturbed oligotrophic temperate and boreal lakes

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that presents a major risk to ecosystems, biota, human health, and remains a priority concern. In temperate and boreal lakes Hg and methylmercury (MMHg) are expected to vary as a function of atmospheric Hg deposition, lake water chemistry, catchment characteristics and climate variables. The aim of this study was to quantify Hg and MMHg in unperturbed oligotrophic lakes and to identify the factors controlling their distribution. We first hypothesized that lake Hg (and MMHg to lesser extent) spatial variations are linked to atmospheric deposition, catchment characteristics, and terrestrial exportation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We secondly examined if lake Hg concentrations have followed the decrease in atmospheric Hg emission observed between the mid-1990s to the end-2010s. We found that overall, atmospheric Hg has little impact on lake Hg and MMHg concentrations, which are both primarily influenced by DOC input originating from the forest catchment. The relationship between DOC and Hg differed between the spring and the fall, with a Hg-to-DOC ratio twice as high in spring. This seems related to snowmelt input of Hg (with a relatively reduced input of DOC) or the internal lake build-up of Hg during the ice-covered period. Of the 10 lakes intensively visited over a 20-year period, only 3 showed significant lake Hg decreases despite significant negative trends in atmospheric Hg concentrations, suggesting a lag between atmospheric and surface water temporal trends. Overall, terrestrial catchments retain around 80% of atmospheric Hg implying that large Hg pools have been built up in soils in the last decades. As such, the reduction of atmospheric Hg alone will not necessarily result in Hg decreases in lakes, since the Hg concentrations may be modulated by DOC export trends and catchment characteristics. This stresses the need to improve our understanding of the processes governing Hg transfers from catchments into lakes.

Abstract:Puerperal ovarian vein thrombophlebitis (POVT) is a rare complication during the puerperal period. A late diagnosis can lead to a high rate of morbidity and even mortality. By CT the POVT can be diagnosed early. This enables initiation of an adequate therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics and i.v. anticoagulation well in time. In this way the disease can often be managed conservatively. CT controls can confirm the effectiveness of the therapy and are helpful in determining the duration of the i.v. anticoagulation.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a bioavailable and toxic element with concentrations that are persistently high or rising in some Arctic and subarctic lakes despite reduced atmospheric emissions in North America. This is due to rising Hg emissions to the atmosphere outside of North America, enhanced sequestration of Hg to sediments by climate-mediated increases in primary production, and ongoing release of Hg from terrestrial reservoirs. To evaluate the influence of organic matter and other parameters on Hg accumulation in northern lakes, near-surface sediments were sampled from 60 lakes across a boreal to shrub tundra gradient in the central Northwest Territories, Canada. The organic matter of the lake sediments, assessed using programmed pyrolysis and petrology, is composed of a mixture of terrestrial, aquatic, and inert organic matter. The proportion of algal-derived organic matter is higher in sediments of lakes below treeline relative to shrub tundra sites. Total sedimentary Hg concentration is correlated to all organic matter constituents but is unrelated to latitude or lake position below or above treeline. The concentrations of Ag, Ca, P, S, U, Ti, Y, Cd, and Zn are also strong predictors of total sedimentary Hg concentration, indicating input from a common geogenic source and/or common sequestration pathways associated with organic matter. Catchment area is a strong negative predictor of total sedimentary Hg concentration, particularly in lakes above treeline, possibly due to retention capacity of Hg and other elements in local sinks. This research highlights the complexity of controls on Hg sequestration in sediment and shows that while organic matter is a strong predictor of total sedimentary Hg concentration on a landscape scale and across extreme gradients in climate and associated vegetation and permafrost, other factors such as catchment area and sources from mineralized bedrock are also important.

Abstract:We examined temporal differences in sedimentary production of monomethylmercury (MMHg) at three sites in Long Island Sound (LIS). Sediment-phase concentrations of Hg species decreased from west to east in LIS surface sediments, following the trend of organic matter. However, Hg methylation potentials, measured by incubation with an isotopic tracer (200Hg), increased from west to east. 200Hg methylation potentials were enhanced in August relative to March and June, attributable to differences in activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Organic matter and acid-volatile sulfide influenced the distribution coefficient (KD) of inorganic Hg (Hg(II) = total Hg - MMHg) and inhibited 200Hg methylation in surface sediments. 200Hg methylation varied inversely with the KD of Hg(II) and positively with the concentration of Hg(II), mostly as HgS0, in LIS pore waters. Accordingly, we posit that a principal control on MMHg production in low-sulfide, coastal marine sediments is partitioning of Hg(II) between particle and dissolved phases, which regulates availability of Hg substrate to methylating bacteria. Most of the partitioning in LIS sediments is due to Hg-organic associations. This suggests that reductions in the organic content of coastal sediment, a potential result of nutrient abatement programs intended to inhibit eutrophication of near-shore waters, could enhance MMHg production by increasing the bioavailability of the large reservoir of "legacy Hg" buried within the sediment.
Algal Organic Matter Drives Methanogen-Mediated Methylmercury Production in Water from Eutrophic Shallow Lakes

Abstract:Algal blooms bring massive amounts of algal organic matter (AOM) into eutrophic lakes, which influences microbial methylmercury (MeHg) production. However, because of the complexity of AOM and its dynamic changes during algal decomposition, the relationship between AOM and microbial Hg methylators remains poorly understood, which hinders predicting MeHg production and its bioaccumulation in eutrophic shallow lakes. To address that, we explored the impacts of AOM on microbial Hg methylators and MeHg production by characterizing dissolved organic matter with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and quantifying the microbial Hg methylation gene hgcA. We first reveal that the predominance of methanogens, facilitated by eutrophication-induced carbon input, could drive MeHg production in lake water. Specifically, bioavailable components of AOM (i.e., CHONs such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial byproduct-like materials) increased the abundances (Archaea-hgcA gene: 438–2240% higher) and activities (net CH4 production: 16.0–44.4% higher) of Archaea (e.g., methanogens). These in turn led to enhanced dissolved MeHg levels (24.3–15,918% higher) for three major eutrophic shallow lakes in China. Nevertheless, our model results indicate that AOM-facilitated MeHg production could be offset by AOM-induced MeHg biodilution under eutrophication. Abstract:The proportionate mortality experience and proportionate cancer mortality experience were examined for 1,114 white male members of the American Federation of Grain Millers' life insurance plan. Mortality was significantly elevated for accidents and cancers of the lymphatic and hematopoietic systems, particularly from lymphosarcoma and reticulum cell sarcoma, other neoplasms of lymphoid tissue (i.e., giant follicular lymphoma and other primary malignant neoplasms of lymphoid tissue), and multiple myeloma. No increased mortality was seen for cancer of the respiratory tract, and nonmalignant diseases of the digestive tract were significantly lower than expected. Employees of grain mills showed higher mortality ratios of lymphatic and hematopoietic cancers as compared to other grain industry categories. A preliminary survey of pesticide usage suggested that grain mills were generally associated with greater use of pesticides than other industrial categories with considerable variation among the many facilities encompassed in this study.
