Abstract:Irregular hemorrhagic traumas always threaten the health of patients due to uncontrollable bleeding and wound infections. The traditional hemostatic materials show dissatisfactory hemostatic efficiency and antibacterial activity in solving these potential bleeding dangers. Herein, we proposed a kind of composites based on flexible wood membrane (FWM) loaded with chitosan/alginate derivative for accelerating rapid hemostasis and preventing infection. FWM was removed part of hemicellulose and lignin by using NaOH/Na2SO3 mixture to obtain excellent flexibility while retaining the original porous structure, followed by loading silver nanoparticles on the FWM surface to prepare AgNPs-FWM as an antibacterial bio-carrier. Then, AgNPs-FWM was coated with polyoxyethylene stearate-modified chitosan and multi-aldehyde sodium alginate to fabricate the composites of chitosan/alginate/AgNPs-FWM (CSA/AgNPs-FWM) using in-situ Schiff base reaction. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the CSA/AgNPs-FWM composites exhibited lower BCI value (2.6 ± 1.3 %), more rapid hemostasis (26 s) and lower blood loss (67.8 mg) than that of the traditional materials. The possible mechanism for the hemostasis process was not only the high blood absorption capacity, but also the synergistic interaction between hydrophobic alkane chains, amino groups, aldehydes, hydroxyl groups and blood cells. Moreover, CSA/AgNPs-FWM showed exceptional superiorities in mechanical properties and antibacterial activity, which endowed composites high potential in hemostasis application for irregular external wound.
Using absorbable chitosan hemostatic sponges as a promising surgical dressing

Abstract:As absorbable hemostatic dressings, chitosan with a deacetylation degree of 40% (CS-40) and 73% (CS-73) have been fabricated into sponges via a modified method. The hemostatic, biocompatible and biodegradable properties were evaluated through in vivo assays. In a hepatic hemorrhage model, the chitosan sponges, with excellent blood compatibility, achieved less blood loss than the gelation sponge (GS). In addition, CS-40 showed better hemostatic capability and biodegradability than CS-73. After implantation, a histological analysis indicated that CS-40 exhibited the best biodegradability, tissue regeneration and least tissue adhesion. By contrasting CS-40 and CS-73, the deacetylation degree is confirmed to be a key factor for the hemostatic effect, biodegradability, biocompatibility and tissue regeneration. Our overall results demonstrated the potential application of CS-40 for use in absorbable hemostatic dressings.
Polymer Composite Sponges with Inherent Antibacterial, Hemostatic, Inflammation‐Modulating and Proregenerative Performances for Methicillin‐Resistant Staphylococcus aureus ‐Infected Wound Healing

Abstract:Clinical wound management remains a major challenge due to massive bleeding, bacterial infection, and difficult wound healing after tissue trauma. To simultaneously address these issues, composite polymer sponges for accelerating drug-resistant bacterial infected wound healing are fabricated by facilely mixing sodium polyacrylate (PAAS), double quaternary ammonium salts-conjugated chitosan (QAS-CS), and collagen (COL) in aqueous solution, followed by lyophilization. Composite sponges (PAAS/QAS-CS/COL, PQC) show highly porous microstructures (porosity ≈90%) with moderate compress modulus (≈0.3 MPa), tensile strength (0.004 MPa), and high swelling ratio (≈3500%). Importantly, PQC sponge demonstrates superior hemostasis ability over commercially available CS sponge by inducing rapid hemagglutination, and exhibits significantly better antibacterial activity against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli by destroying cell membrane and causing the leakage of bioactive components such as potassium ion and β-galactosidase from treated bacterial. Furthermore, PQC sponge can efficiently promote cell proliferation. Significantly, the sponge greatly expedites the regeneration of MRSA-infected full-thickness skin wound in rabbit by successfully eradicating bacterial infection, and reducing inflammation. PQC sponge also improves both early angiogenesis and blood vessel maturation at the wound site. Overall, this multifunctional sponge is a promising wound dressing for clinical use and holds great potential for rapid clinical translation.

Abstract:Noncompressible hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable death in battlefield/civilian trauma. The development of novel injectable and biodegradable hemostatic sponges, with rapid shape recovery and excellent antibacterial activity that can control hemorrhage in noncompressible bleeding sites and promote in situ tissue regeneration is still urgently needed. In this study, thermo/pH sensitive 2-hydroxypropyl-trimethylammonium chitins (QCHs) with low degree of quaternization substitution (DS: 0.07–0.23) and high degree of acetylation (DA: 0.91–0.94) were synthesized homogeneously for the first time. Their chemical compositions including DS and DA were characterized accurately by proton NMR for the first time. High strength QCH based sponges with good water/blood absorbency, rapid shape recovery and good antibacterial activity were prepared without using any crosslinkers but only due to their thermosensitive property, since they are soluble at low temperature but insoluble at high temperature. Compared with commercial products, the QCH sponges with cationic groups had the stronger pro-coagulant ability, better hemostatic effect in normal/heparinized liver perforation and femoral artery models in rats and porcine subclavian arteriovenous resection model. Moreover, the porous structure and biodegradability of the QCH sponges could promote in situ tissue regeneration. Overall, the QCH sponges show great clinical translational potential for noncompressible hemorrhage and tissue regeneration.

Abstract:One of the most important considerations when designing residue number systems (RNSs) is the choice of the moduli set; this is due to the fact that the dynamic range of the system, its speed, as well as its hardware complexity, depend on both the forms as well as the number of moduli chosen; In this paper, a new class of multimoduli RNSs based on sets of forms {2/sup n(1)/-1, 2/sup n(1)/+1, 2/sup n2/-1, 2/sup n(2)/+1, /spl middot//spl middot//spl middot/, 2/sup n(L)/-1, 2/sup n(L)/+1} is presented. The moduli 2/sup n(i)/-1 and 2/sup n(i)/+1 are called conjugates of each other. The new RNSs that rely on pairs of conjugate moduli result in hardware-efficient two-level implementations for the weighted-to-RNS and RNS-to-weighted conversions, achieve very large dynamic ranges, and imply fast and efficient RNS processing. When compared with conventional systems of the same number of moduli and the same dynamic range, the proposed new systems offer the following benefits: (1) hardware savings of 25 to 40% for the weighted-to-RNS conversion and (2) a reduction of over 80% in the complexity of the final Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) involved in the RNS-to-weighted conversion. Thus, significant compromises between large dynamic ranges, fast internal processing, and low complexity are achieved by the new systems.
Multifunctional hemostatic polysaccharide-based sponge enhanced by tunicate cellulose: A promising approach for photothermal antibacterial activity and accelerated wound healing

Abstract:Fast and effective hemostasis and protection against wound infection play a crucial role in trauma care. In this study, a sponge scaffold with a self-expanding interpenetrating macropore structure was designed via two-step cross-linking method for hemostasis and photothermal antimicrobial activity. Oxidized Konjac glucomannan (OKGM) and chitosan (CS) were crosslinked once to form a dynamic covalent bonding network, and a basic three-dimensional fiber porous network framework was constructed by uniformly dispersing Tunicate nanocellulose (TCNCs). Secondary crosslinking introduced Polydopamine (PDA NPs) into the sponge, while dynamic hydrogen bonds were interleaved to stabilize the frame. PDA NPs enhanced the sponge's antibacterial and antioxidant properties due to its good photothermal conversion efficiency and oxygen radical scavenging ability. Compared to cotton gauze and gelatin sponges, the composite sponges showed superior blood cell adhesion and platelet activation. In tests on rat liver trauma models, composite sponges showed shorter hemostasis time (12 ± 2.17 s) and less blood loss (0.1 ± 0.052 g). Sponges can protect wound tissue through their adhesion properties. In the full-thickness wound model infected with S. aureus , the composite sponge accelerated wound healing. Overall, this composite sponge has great potential for clinical use as a wound dressing.

Abstract:The hemorrhage in daily life was a great challenge for the life health. Before hospitalization and infection, stopping traumatic bleeding timely is an important measure to decrease the death threat. The high crystallinity and low porous structure of chitin (CH) make texture of sole CH sponge not soft enough, which limit its hemostatic properties. In this work, loose corn stalk (CS) was used to modify the structures and properties of sole CH sponge. The novel hemostatic composite sponge of CH/CS4 was prepared by cross-linking and freeze-drying process of chitin and corn stalk suspension. The composite sponge obtained best physical and hemostatic properties at the 1:1 volume ratio of chitin and corn stalk. Thanks to the porous structures, CH/CS4 possessed high water/blood absorption ability (34 ± 2 g/g and 32.7 ± 2 g/g), rapid hemostatic time (31 s) and low blood loss (0.31 g), allowing it to be delivered into the wound bleeding sites to reduce the wound bleeding by robust physical barrier and pressure effect. Furthermore, CH/CS4 displayed excellent hemostatic performance than sole CH and commercial polyvinyl fluoride sponge (PVF). Moreover, CH/CS4 displayed superior wound healing ability and cytocompatibility. Therefore, the CH/CS4 has high potential application in medical hemostatic field.

Abstract:Cellulose/chitosan composite, as a mature commercial antibacterial dressing, is an important type of wound repair material. However, how to achieve the perfect compound of two components and improve antibacterial activity is a major, lingering issue. In this study, a bifunctional group modified bacterial cellulose (DCBC) was prepared by carboxymethylation and selective oxidation. Further, the chitosan (CS) was compounded in the network of DCBC by self-crosslinking to form dialdehyde carboxymethyl bacterial cellulose/chitosan composites (S-DCBC/CS). The aldehyde group can react with amino of CS by Schiff base reaction. The carboxyl group of DCBC and the amorphous distribution of CS molecular chains increase the antimicrobial properties of composites. The bacteriostatic rate of composites could be higher than 95%. Bacteria can be attracted onto the surface of composites, what we call it "directional adhesion antibacterial effects". In particular, a kind of large animal wound model, deep Ⅱ degree infected scald of Bama miniature pig, was used to research the antimicrobial and healing properties of materials. The S-DCBC/CS can effectively inhibit bacterial proliferation of wound and kill the bacteria. The wound healing rate of S-DCBC/CS was up to 80% after three weeks. The composites show better antibacterial and promoting concrescence effects than traditional chitosan dressings.

Abstract:Rapid hemostasis in incompressible wounds using cellulose sponge, coupled with environmentally friendly and low-cost preparation, remains a challenge. Herein, cellulose sponges loaded with chitosan with abundant rich pore structure and high water absorption capacity were prepared with cellulose carbamate by using gas foaming method. Animal experiments showed that the blood loss and hemostasis time can be significantly shortened from 225 s to 39 s by the plug the incompressible wound using adaptable composite sponges. Scanning electron microscope results showed that the chitosan formed a porous network structure on the surface and between the pores of the cellulose sponge. An obvious inhibitory effects of composite sponge on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus could effectively reduce wound infection. And the rapid shape recovery ability of the composite sponge was beneficial to sealing the bleeding wound quickly. The results of in vitro hemolytic activity, cytotoxicity and live-dead cell staining showed the composite hemostatic sponges have excellent biocompatibility. In particular, the preparation of cellulose sponge by microwave-assisted method can effectively improve the environmental pollution and cumbersome steps caused by current industrial production. It is expected to be used for rapid hemostasis of non-compressible hemorrhagic wounds.

Abstract:<p>Wound dressing composed of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs), based on chitosan/alginate/hyaluronic acid (CS/ALG/HYA) crosslinked by genipin, was prepared by freeze-dried molding. Genipin as excellent natural biological crosslinker was chose for high biocompatibility and improving mechanical properties of materials. The CS/ALG/HYA sponges (CAHSs) were characterized by FTIR, XRD, DSC and SEM. Porosity, swelling behavior and mechanical properties and in vitro degradation of CAHSs were investigated. The cytotoxicity assay was carried out on HUVEC cells in vitro and the result proves the good biocompatibility of CAHSs. Hemolysis tests indicated that the prepared CAHSs were non-hemolytic material (hemolysis ratio < 5%, no cytotoxicity). PT and aPPT coagulation tests demonstrated that CAHS2 and CAHS3 could both activate the extrinsic and intrinsic coagulation pathway and thus accelerated blood coagulation. Further, in a rat full-thickness wounds model, the CAHS2 sponge significantly facilitates wound closure compared to other groups. CAHSs exhibited adjustable physical, mechanical and biological properties. Thus, the chitosan-based polyelectrolyte composite sponges exhibit great potential as promising wound dressings.</p>

Abstract:Skin lesions and injuries can increase the risk of pathogen infections. Developing efficacious wound dressings could effectively prevent bacterial infection and accelerate wound healing. Herein, we developed chitosan composite hydrogels cross-linked by multifunctional diazo resin (DR) as antibacterial dressings for improved wound healing. The composite hydrogels were in situ formed by electrostatic interactions, chelation interactions, and covalent bonds between carboxylated chitosan and DR under ultraviolet assisted without small photosensitizer. The resultant hydrogels (noted as DR-CCH) showed good stability at different DR concentrations in physiological buffers. The antibacterial assays showed the DR-CCH could inhibit and kill Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. What is more, our hydrogels could accelerate wound healing in vivo. The present study demonstrates this composite DR-CCH with trace zinc has potential for accelerated wound healing.
A macroporous composite sponge with high water absorbency and active coagulation mechanism for traumatic hemostasis and anti-infection

Abstract:The development of a composite sponge with high water absorbency and active coagulation mechanism for traumatic hemostasis and anti-infection remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a composite sponge using gelation, swelling, and freeze-drying methods based on quaternized chitosan, succinimidyl-modified F127, and bioactive glass. The sponge exhibited macroporous structure, high porosity, and water absorbency. When exposed to blood, it strongly interacted with blood cells, promoting their adhesion, aggregation, and activation. Moreover, it activated the intrinsic coagulation pathway. The sponge/ powder demonstrated superior hemostatic capacity to commercial gauze, gelatin sponge, Yunnan Baiyao, and chitosan hemostatic powder in rat tail amputation, liver superficial injury, liver resection, and liver semi-perforation wound models. The sponge also presented robust anti-infection activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Additionally, the sponge showed low cytotoxicity, hemolysis activity, inflammation response, and systemic toxicity, demonstrating its favorable biocompatibility.
Local Macroeconomic Trends and Hospital Admissions for Child Abuse, 2000–2009

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between local macroeconomic indicators and physical abuse admission rates to pediatric hospitals over time. METHODS: Retrospective study of children admitted to 38 hospitals in the Pediatric Hospital Information System database. Hospital data were linked to unemployment, mortgage delinquency, and foreclosure data for the associated metropolitan statistical areas. Primary outcomes were admission rates for (1) physical abuse in children <6 years old, (2) non-birth, non-motor vehicle crash-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) in infants <1 year old (which carry high risk for abuse), and (3) all-cause injuries. Poisson fixed-effects regression estimated trends in admission rates and associations between those rates and trends in unemployment, mortgage delinquency, and foreclosure. RESULTS: Between 2000 and 2009, rates of physical abuse and high-risk TBI admissions increased by 0.79% and 3.1% per year, respectively (P ≤ .02), whereas all-cause injury rates declined by 0.80% per year (P < .001). Abuse and high-risk TBI admission rates were associated with the current mortgage delinquency rate and with the change in delinquency and foreclosure rates from the previous year (P ≤ .03). Neither abuse nor high-risk TBI rates were associated with the current unemployment rate. The all-cause injury rate was negatively associated with unemployment, delinquency, and foreclosure rates (P ≤ .007). CONCLUSIONS: Multicenter hospital data show an increase in pediatric admissions for physical abuse and high-risk TBI during a time of declining all-cause injury rate. Abuse and high-risk TBI admission rates increased in relationship to local mortgage delinquency and foreclosure trends.
Double crosslinking chitosan sponge with antibacterial and hemostatic properties for accelerating wound repair

Abstract:Skin trauma with uncontrolled bleeding and bacterial infection are major challenges in clinical wound management. Therefore, the design of elastic and biodegradability wound dressing with antibacterial and hemostatic properties are attracting increasing attention. In the study, chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) are covalently bound by EDC/NHS to form a complex and followed by the introduction of tannic acid (TA) as secondary cross-linking agent after removing the acidity of chitosan. CS/GO/TA sponges can exist stably in aqueous solution and has good compression recovery performance. In vitro experiments showed that CS/GO/TA sponges have antibacterial, antioxidant, non-hemolysis, blood cell adhesion and cytocompatibility. In vivo experiments in rats showed that CS/GO/TA sponges can quickly stop bleeding and promote wound healing, which has good clinical application potential.
Multi-functional carboxymethyl chitosan/sericin protein/halloysite composite sponge with efficient antibacterial and hemostatic properties for accelerating wound healing

Abstract:The development of wound dressings with hemostatic and antibacterial properties has attracted great attention. In this study, we prepared a multi-functional natural substance sponge (CMC/Ser-Ag/HNT) composed of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), sericin-silver nanoparticle (Ser-Ag), and halloysite (HNT). CMC/Ser-Ag/HNT sponge was demonstrated to bear desired hygroscopicity, porosity, compressive strength and compressive stability, cytocompatibility, and hemocompatibility. The mechanical properties (compressive strength of 100 kPa) and hemostatic capacity (hemostasis time of 15 ± 3 s in the liver injury model and 12 ± 3 s in the caudal injury model) were enhanced by introducing HNT into the CMC sponge. Ser-Ag was synthesized in situ via the redox nature of tyrosine residues in sericin in a "one-step, green" way to enhance the antibacterial activity of the hybrid sponge against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In addition, the rat full-thickness skin defect model experiments demonstrated that the CMC/Ser-Ag/HNT4 sponge significantly promoted epithelialization and collagen formation. Immunofluorescence staining assays revealed that the composite sponge reduced inflammation by downregulating the expression of IL-6 and enhanced angiogenesis by upregulating VEGF expression. All the findings demonstrated the great potential of CMC/Ser-Ag/HNT sponge as versatile clinical wound dressing, especially for hemorrhagic and infected wounds.
Antibacterial chitosan-based composite sponge with synergistic hemostatic effect for massive haemorrhage

Abstract:Uncontrollable acute bleeding and wound infection pose significant challenges in emergency treatment and surgical operations. Therefore, the research and development of highly efficient antibacterial hemostatic agents are of great importance in reducing the mortality rate among patients with massive hemorrhage. In this study, we utilized hydrophobically modified chitosan (HM-CS) and gallic acid chitosan (GA-CS) to create a composite sponge (HM/GA-CS) that exhibits complementary advantages. The composite sponge combines the alkyl chain and polyphenol structure, allowing it to adsorb blood cells and plasma proteins simultaneously. This synergistic effect was confirmed through various tests, including blood cell adhesion, plasma protein barrier behavior, and in vitro hemostatic testing. Furthermore, experiments conducted on a rat liver injury model demonstrated that the composite sponge achieved rapid coagulation within 52 s, resulting in significantly lower bleeding volume compared with traditional gauze. In addition, the incorporation of GA-CS into HM-CS enhanced the antibacterial properties of the composite sponge. The antibacterial rate of the composite sponge against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) reached 100 % and 98.2 %, respectively. To evaluate its biocompatibility, the composite sponge underwent blood compatibility and cell activity tests, confirming its suitability. The HM/GA-CS sponge holds promising applications in managing cases of massive hemorrhage.

Abstract:Effective anti-infection prophylaxis for chronic wounds can reduce the risk of wound infection and improve healing rates. The use of good anti-infection wound dressings is particularly important. In this paper, an antimicrobial composite hydrocolloid sponge dressing with zinc oxide nanoparticles, hydroxypropyl chitosan, and polyvinyl alcohol as the main components was prepared using freeze-drying of the formulated suspensions. The characterizations by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were performed; the antibacterial activity was determined; the on-demand dissolving properties were evaluated; and the basic properties such as porosity, vapor permeability, and water absorption were measured. The results showed that, when the mass ratio of HPCs/PVA was 6:4, the porosity, the steam permeability, the water absorption ratio, and dynamic complete dissolving time in 1 % acetic acid aqueous solution, respectively, reached the optimum value of 63.2 %, 57.7 %, 54.4, and 35 min. Antibacterial activity experiments showed that the sponges significantly inhibited Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. In conclusion, the above results indicate that the prepared hydrocolloid composite sponge has good air permeability, water absorption, antibacterial activity, and on-demand dissolving property and has potential applications in anti-infection treatment of hypo-exudative chronic wounds and pressure sore prevention.

Abstract:Chitosan is a potentially suitable material for wound dressing, but is undesirably water-insoluble. Although chitosan can be modified to produce water-soluble derivatives, the best chitosan derivative for wound dressings remains unclear. The present study introduced three water-soluble chitosan derivatives, namely, carboxymethyl chitosan, quaternized chitosan (QCS), and carboxymethyl quaternized chitosan, and explored the physical properties, biochemical properties, and wound care effectiveness of films of these derivatives. The QCS-based film exhibited higher absorption ability, mechanical properties, water-vapor permeability, electroconductivity, and antioxidant capacity than the other films. Most importantly, the cationic quaternary ammonium groups facilitated the antibacterial activity (>95 %) and blood coagulant capacity of the QCS-based film. As this film also promoted wound healing, it presented as an ideal candidate for wound dressings.

Abstract:Effective bleeding control and wound protecting from infection play critical roles in the tissue healing process. However, local hemostats are not involved in the whole healing processes to promote the final healing efficiency. Here, a multi-functional mussel-inspired polysaccharide-based sponge with hemostatic, antibacterial and adhesive properties was fabricated via cryopolymerization of oxidized dextran (OD), carboxymethyl chitosan (CC) and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA-NPs), followed by lyophilization. Combining with the adsorbed thrombin, the sponges yielded a considerably lower amount of blood than the commercially available hemostatic dressings. Benefiting from the high photo-thermal transition efficiency of PDA-NPs, the sponges exhibited excellent antibacterial activity to both gram positive and negative bacteria. Owing to the rapid hemostatic activity and effective infection resistance, the sponges illustrated the significantly acceleratory wound healing efficiency compared with the control group. The thrombin-loaded OD/CC-PDA polysaccharide-based sponge has great potential for future clinical use as wound dressing.

Abstract:The paper describes the application of thin film bulk acoustic resonators (TFBAR) with an operating frequency around 2 GHz as gas sensors. The sensor consists of a solidly mounted thin film ZnO resonator fabricated on a silicon substrate covered with a gas sensitive polymer receptor. The sensitivity of the device for vapors and gases, like humidity or carbon dioxide, has been measured. The TFBAR sensitivity is up to two orders of magnitude higher compared to conventional quartz microbalance sensors. The sensitivity for a given target gas depends in a nonlinear way on the receptor thickness. Furthermore, the characteristics of the sensitivity versus receptor-thickness curve depends significantly on the target gas and allows a discrimination between gases. The TFBAR-gas sensor performance and the novel observation of a thickness dependent selectivity of receptor material are discussed.
