Abstract:The way metal interfaces evolve during frictional sliding, and how that evolution can be externally influenced under external drivers are important questions, hard to investigate experimentally because the contacts themselves are generally difficult to access. Here we focus on an elementary constituent of a general metal-metal interface, namely an ultra-thin individual nanocontact, where recent rheological studies of crystalline gold nanocontacts [Nature 569, 393 (2019)] showed a dramatic and unexpected mechanical softening as a result of external oscillatory tensile stress. The question which we address through realistic nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations is to what extent such mechanical softening might influence the shearing habit of gold nanocontacts at room temperature. It is found that the shearing evolution, which occurs through a series of discrete slips, is indeed rheologically softened, even though not completely, by the oscillations. Differences also emerge for different types of external oscillation, tensile or rotational. The relevance of these results for future experiments will be discussed.

Abstract:The reversible surface stretch often emerges from the Hellman-Feynman forces exerted on the charged surfaces, leading to the change of the surface stress. A generalized surface elasticity theory is formulated, which allows one to analyze the transverse surface mechanical behavior. The involved transverse surface elastic constants are determined by an efficient method based on analyzing the process of molecular-dynamics simulation for surface elasticity. Our approach provides a framework with which the direct relation between the in-plane surface stress and the transverse surface elastic deformation is addressed in the presence of the surface charges. We also find the significant modi. cation in the elastic modulus of nanostructures due to the existence of the transverse component of surface stress and strain arisen from the surface charges. Abstract:We introduce a technique, traction rheoscopy, to carry out mechanical testing of colloidal solids. A confocal microscope is used to directly measure stress and strain during externally applied deformation. The stress is measured, with single-mPa resolution, by determining the strain in a compliant polymer gel in mechanical contact with the colloidal solid. Simultaneously, the confocal microscope is used to measure structural change in the colloidal solid with single particle resolution during the deformation. To demonstrate the utility and sensitivity of this technique, we deform a hard-sphere colloidal glass in simple shear, and from the macroscopic shear strain and measured stress determine the stress-strain curve. Using the stress-strain curve and measured shear modulus, we decompose the macroscopic shear strain into an elastic and a plastic component. We also determine a local strain tensor for each particle using the changes in its nearest-neighbor distances. These local strains are spatially heterogeneous throughout the sample, but, when averaged, match the macroscopic strain. A microscopic yield criterion is used to split the local strains into subyield and yielded partitions; averages over these partitions complement the macroscopic elastic-plastic decomposition obtained from the stress-strain curve. Localized Elasticity Governs the Nonlinear Rheology of Colloidal Supercooled Liquids

Abstract:We propose a microscopic picture for understanding the nonlinear rheology of supercooled liquids with soft repulsive potentials. Based on Brownian dynamics simulations of supercooled charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions, our analysis shows that the shear thinning of viscosity ( η ) at large enough shear rates ( γ ̇ ), expressed as η∼γ ̇−λ , originates from the evolution of the localized elastic region (LER). An LER is a transient zone composed of the first several coordination shells of a reference particle. In response to the external shear, particles within the LER undergo nearly affine displacement before the yielding of the LER. The characteristic strain ( γ ) and size ( ξ ) of the LER, respectively, depend on the shear rate by γ∼γ ̇ε and ξ∼γ ̇−ν . Three exponents, λ , ε , and ν , are related by λ=1−ε=4ν . This simple relation connects the nonlinear rheology to the elastic properties and the microscopic configurational distortion of the system. The relaxation of the LER is promoted by the large-step nonaffine particle displacement along the extensional direction of the shear geometry with the step length of 0.4 particle diameter. The elastic deformation and relaxation of the LER are ubiquitous and successive in the flow, which compose the fundamental process governing the bulk nonlinear viscoelasticity. We apply this model to analyze the rheo-small-angle neutron scattering data of sheared charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. Abstract:We use nonequilibrium atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of unentangled melts of linear and star oligomer chains (C25H52) to study the steady-state viscoelastic response under confinement within nanoscale hematite (α−Fe2O3) channels. We report (i) the negative (positive) first (second) normal stress difference and (ii) the presence of viscoelastic tension at low Wi. With the aim of uncovering the molecular mechanism of viscoelasticity, we link these effects to bond alignment such that absorbed chains near the surface can carry the elastic force exerted on the walls, which decays as the chains become more aligned in the flow direction. This alignment is observed to be independent of the film thickness but enhanced as the shear rate increases or the surface attraction weakens.

Abstract:We analyze the various strain measures by which nanoporous materials react to changes in their surface stress and surface stretch at the solid–pore interface. Results of continuum mechanics are given for model geometries, arrays of spheres and fibres as well as solids with spherical and cylindrical voids. The findings are supported by atomistic simulation. The results for the mean stress agree with predictions of the generalized capillary equation of Weissmüller and Cahn, and they are incompatible with the notion of Laplace pressure. By contrast, no general relation between the mean stress and the macroscopic dimensional change could be identified. Even though certain microstructures with quite different geometry exhibit strikingly similar behaviour, others differ significantly. The macroscopic dimensional change can be largely enhanced compared with the local strain of the nanoscale building blocks. This fact can be exploited to amplify the stroke of nanoporous metal actuators.
Local Elasticity in Nonlinear Rheology of Interacting Colloidal Glasses Revealed by Neutron Scattering and Rheometry

Abstract:The flow of colloidal suspensions is ubiquitous in nature and industry. Colloidal suspensions exhibit a wide range of rheological behavior, which should be closely related to the microscopic structure of the systems. With in situ small-angle neutron scattering complemented by rheological measurements, we investigated the deformation behavior of a charge-stabilized colloidal glass at particle level undergoing steady shear. A short-lived, localized elastic response at particle level, termed as the transient elasticity zone (TEZ), was identified from the neutron spectra. The existence of the TEZ, which could be promoted by the electrostatic interparticle potential, is a signature of deformation heterogeneity: the body of fluids under shear behaves like an elastic solid within the spatial range of the TEZ but like fluid outside the TEZ. The size of the TEZ shrinks as the shear rate increases in the shear thinning region, which shows that the shear thinning is accompanied by a diminishing deformation heterogeneity. More interestingly, the TEZ is found to be the structural unit that provides the resistance to the imposed shear, as evidenced by the quantitative agreement between the local elastic stress sustained by the TEZ and the macroscopic stress from rheological measurements at low and moderate shear rates. Our findings provide an understanding on the nonlinear rheology of interacting colloidal glasses from a micro-mechanical view.
Strain-dependent solid surface stress and the stiffness of soft contacts

Abstract:Surface stresses have recently emerged as a key player in the mechanics of highly compliant solids. The classic theories of contact mechanics describe adhesion with a compliant substrate as a competition between surface energies driving deformation to establish contact and bulk elasticity resisting this. However, it has recently been shown that surface stresses provide an additional restoring force that can compete with and even dominate over elasticity in highly compliant materials, especially when length scales are small compared to the ratio of the surface stress to the elastic modulus, $\Upsilon/E$. Here, we investigate experimentally the contribution of surface stresses to the force of adhesion. We find that the elastic and capillary contributions to the adhesive force are of similar magnitude, and that both are required to account for measured adhesive forces between rigid silica spheres and compliant, silicone gels. Notably, the strain-dependence of the solid surface stress contributes significantly to the stiffness of soft solid contacts.

Sliding or Rolling? Characterizing single-particle contacts

Abstract:Contacts between particles in dense, sheared suspensions are believed to underpin much of their rheology. Roughness and adhesion are known to constrain the relative motion of particles, and thus globally affect the shear response, but an experimental description of how they microscopically influence the transmission of forces and relative displacements within contacts is lacking. Here we show that an innovative colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy technique allows the simultaneous measurement of normal and tangential forces exchanged between tailored surfaces and microparticles while tracking their relative sliding and rolling, unlocking the direct measurement of coefficients of rolling friction, as well as of sliding friction. We demonstrate that, in the presence of sufficient traction, particles spontaneously roll, reducing dissipation and promoting longer-lasting contacts. Conversely, when rolling is prevented, friction is greatly enhanced for rough and adhesive surfaces, while smooth particles coated by polymer brushes maintain well-lubricated contacts. We find that surface roughness induces rolling due to load-dependent asperity interlocking, leading to large off-axis particle rotations. In contrast, smooth, adhesive surfaces promote rolling along the principal axis of motion. Our results offer direct values of friction coefficients for numerical studies and an interpretation of the onset of discontinuous shear thickening based on them, opening up new ways to tailor rheology via contact engineering.

Abstract:Recent microfluidic experiments have evidenced complex spatio-temporal fluctuations in low-Reynolds-number flows of polymer solutions through lattices of obstacles. However, understanding the nonlinear physics of such systems remains a challenge. Here, we use high performance simulations to study viscoelastic flows through a hexagonal lattice of cylindrical obstacles. We find that structures of localized polymer stress – in particular birefringent strands – control the stability and the dynamics. We first show that, at steady state, strands act as a web of sticky flow barriers that induce channelization, multistability and hysteresis. We then demonstrate that a spontaneous destabilization of the strands drives the transition to unsteady flow with regimes of self-sustained oscillations, travelling waves and strand pulsations. We further show that these pulsations, which result from the destabilization of envelope patterns of stress with strands wrapped around multiple obstacles, are integral to the transition towards elastic turbulence in our two-dimensional simulations. Our study provides a new perspective on the role of birefringent strands and a framework for understanding experimental observations. We anticipate that it is an important step towards unifying existing interpretations of the nonlinear physics of viscoelastic flows through complex structures.

Effects of particle stiffness on the extensional rheology of model rod-like nanoparticle suspensions

Abstract:The linear and nonlinear rheological behavior of two rod-like particle suspensions as a function of concentration is studied using small amplitude oscillatory shear, steady shear and capillary breakup extensional rheometry. The rod-like suspensions are composed of fd virus and its mutant fdY21M, which are perfectly monodisperse, with a length on the order of 900 nm. The particles are semi flexible yet differ in their persistence length. The effect of stiffness on the rheological behavior in both, shear and extensional flow, is investigated experimentally. The linear viscoelastic shear data is compared in detail with theoretical predictions for worm-like chains. The extensional properties are compared to Batchelor's theory, generalized for the shear thinning nature of the suspensions. Theoretical predictions agree well with the measured complex moduli at low concentrations as well as the nonlinear shear and elongational viscosities at high flow rates. The results in this work provide guidelines for enhancing the elongational viscosity based on purely frictional effects in absence of strong normal forces which are characteristic for high molecular weight polymers.

Coarse-graining microscopic strains in a harmonic, two-dimensional solid and its implications for elasticity: non-local susceptibilities and non-affine noise

Abstract:In soft matter systems the local displacement field can be accessed directly by video microscopy enabling one to compute local strain fields and hence the elastic moduli using a coarse-graining procedure. We study this process for a simple triangular lattice of particles connected by harmonic springs in two-dimensions. Coarse-graining local strains obtained from particle configurations in a Monte Carlo simulation generates non-trivial, non-local strain correlations (susceptibilities), which may be understood within a generalized, Landau type elastic Hamiltonian containing up to quartic terms in strain gradients (K. Franzrahe et al., Phys. Rev. E 78, 026106 (2008)). In order to demonstrate the versatility of the analysis of these correlations and to make our calculations directly relevant for experiments on colloidal solids, we systematically study various parameters such as the choice of statistical ensemble, presence of external pressure and boundary conditions. We show that special care needs to be taken for an accurate application of our results to actual experiments, where the analyzed area is embedded within a larger system, to which it is mechanically coupled. Apart from the smooth, affine strain fields, the coarse-graining procedure also gives rise to a noise field made up of non-affine displacements. Several properties of this noise field may be rationalized for the harmonic solid using a simple "cell model" calculation. Furthermore the scaling behavior of the probability distribution of the noise field is studied and a master curve is obtained.

Abstract:Response of the cytoskeleton to mechanical stimulus, which involves coordinated assembly and disassembly of cytoskeletal polymers and their coupling to motor proteins, has been shown to be governed by a ubiquitous mechanical behavior called power-law rheology. Various experimental techniques in cell mechanics have yielded similar qualitative observations and quantitative behavior indicating that the power-law rheology is an intrinsic feature of the cell structure. In this study, a biomechanical model of the cell in microbead twisting experiments is developed which incorporates the material law associated with power-law rheology using the finite element method. Such a biomechanical model can help elucidating the mechanics of cytoskeletal responses and relate the microrheology of the cytoskeleton to its overall behavior under mechanical stimulus. This biomechanical model is employed to explore the role of material constants associated with power-law rheology on the overall response of a cell in magnetic twisting cytometry. Abstract:Nanoporous metals are a class of novel nanomaterials with potential applications in many fields such as sensing, catalysis, and fuel cells. The present paper is aimed to investigate atomic mechanisms associated with the uniaxial tensile deformation behavior of nanoporous gold. A phase field method is adopted to generate the bicontinuous open-cell porous microstructure of the material. Molecular dynamics simulations then reveal that the uniaxial tensile deformation in such porous materials is accompanied by an accumulation of stacking faults in ligaments along the loading direction and their junctions with neighboring ligaments, as well as the formation of Lomer–Cottrell locks at such junctions. The tensile strain leads to progressive necking and rupture of some ligaments, ultimately resulting in failure of the material. The simulation results also suggest scaling laws for the effective Young's modulus, yield stress, and ultimate strength as functions of the relative mass density and average ligament size in the material.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this work was to develop methods for defining, constructing, and evaluating a “minimal deformation target” (MDT) brain for multisubject studies based on analysis of the entire group. The goal is to provide a procedure that will create a standard, reproducible target brain image based on common features of a group of three-dimensional MR brain images. Method The average deformation and dispersion distance, derived from discrete three-dimensional deformation fields (DFs), are used to identify the best individual target (BIT) brain. This brain is assumed to be the one with the minimal deformation bias within a group of MR brain images. The BIT brain is determined as the one with the minimal target quality score, our cost function based on the deformation displacement and dispersion distance. The BIT brain is then transformed to the MDT brain using an average DF to create an optimized target brain. This analysis requires the calculation of a large number of DFs. To overcome this limitation, we developed an analysis method (the fast method) that reduces the task from order N2 complexity to one of order N, a tremendous advantage for large-N studies. Results Multiscale correlation analysis in a group of 20 subjects demonstrated the superiority of warping using the MDT target brain, made from the BIT brain, over several individual and MDT-transformed target brains also from the group. Conclusion Analysis of three-dimensional DF provides a means to quickly create a reproducible MDT target brain for any set of subjects. Warping to the MDT target was shown by an independent multiscale correlation method to produce superior results.
Shear-Induced Anisotropy in Rough Elastomer Contact

Abstract:True contact between randomly rough solids consists of myriad individual micro-junctions. While their total area controls the adhesive friction force of the interface, other macroscopic features, including viscoelastic friction, wear, stiffness and electric resistance, also strongly depend on the size and shape of individual micro-junctions. Here we show that, in rough elastomer contacts, the shape of micro-junctions significantly varies as a function of the shear force applied to the interface. This process leads to a growth of anisotropy of the overall contact interface, which saturates in macroscopic sliding regime. We show that smooth sphere/plane contacts have the same shear-induced anisotropic behaviour as individual micro-junctions, with a common scaling law over four orders of magnitude in initial area. We discuss the physical origin of the observations in the light of a fracture-based adhesive contact mechanics model, described in the companion article, which captures the smooth sphere/plane measurements. Our results shed light on a generic, overlooked source of anisotropy in rough elastic contacts, not taken into account in current rough contact mechanics models.

Towards rational design of power-law rheology via DNA nanostar networks

Abstract:We measure the rheology of transient hydrogels comprised of a single type of DNA nanostar that makes both strong and weak bonds. These gels exhibit power-law frequency-dependence of their storage and loss moduli, with scaling exponents that depend on the proportions of the two bonds. A diffusive stress-relaxation model, in which the strong-bond sub-network relieves stress by diffusing through an effective viscosity imposed by the weak bonds, explains the scaling of their moduli. The model has implications for the fractal dimensions of the strong-bond sub-network that are in good agreement with measurements and makes testable predictions for the viscoelasticity of other transient hydrogels. Overall, this work demonstrates the power of DNA nanotechnology to decipher, and potentially rationally design, power-law rheology.

Abstract:The functionalized applications of nanoporous metals place clear requirements on their basic mechanical properties, yet there is a lack of research on the mechanical response under multiaxial loading conditions. In this work, the mechanical behaviors of nanoporous gold under multiaxial tension are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. The mechanical properties under different loading conditions are compared and the microstructure evolution is analyzed to clarify the deformation mechanisms of nanoporous gold in biaxial and triaxial tension. It is found that the modulus of nanoporous gold in multiaxial tension is strengthened and the strength is softened compared to uniaxial tension. The failure of nanoporous gold in multiaxial tension is dominated by the progressive yielding, necking, and rupture of ligaments along the multiple uniaxial loading directions. The dislocation activity under multiaxial loads is more intense and more prone to plastic deformation, ultimately resulting in lower strength and smaller failure strain. The findings provide more insight into the understanding of the deformation mechanisms of nanoporous metals under complex stress states.

Abstract:The elastic moduli of most materials in nature are commonly assumed to be identical (symmetric) under compressive and tensile loading. Here, we report an obviously asymmetric elastic property of alkylthiol-capped gold nanocrystal superlattices (NCSLs) in compression and tension computed from fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Elastic asymmetry exhibits a clear trend of increasing with the increasing strain, and we attribute the strain-dependent elastic asymmetry to the variations of interaction between flexible ligand molecules during elastic deformations. In compression, ligand molecules sterically interact more with each other to continuously stiffen the NCSL, while in tension, they interact less and cause less stiffness. Unlike hybrid molecular materials, we find that the terminal groups of ligand molecules in the superstructure play only a minor role in determining the elastic asymmetry of gold NCSLs. In addition, the elastic asymmetry is observed to be essentially independent of ligand length and core size. These findings are expected to deepen our understanding of underlying asymmetric elastic properties of NCSL materials and may find technological applications in device technologies.
