Abstract:One of the most prevalent cancers in humans is skin cancer. The deadliest form of skin cancer is malignant melanoma and the incidence rate has increased rapidly in recent years. In the treatment of melanoma, early diagnosis is very critical. It is difficult and time consuming to automatically detect melanoma from images taken from dermoscopy devices. Computer-aided systems are needed, therefore. In this paper, a deep learning-based method for melanoma segmentation and classification with color images taken from dermoscopy devices is proposed. This technique uses ISIC 2017 International Skin Imaging Collaboration. In this paper, for segmentation and classification measures, 1317 skin images taken from the ISIC archive were used. The approach is based on the architecture of Preprocessing, U-Net and VGGNet. Operations such as mean subtraction, image normalization, image cropping, and scaling are implemented in the preprocessing phase. It is intended to make pictures of the skin more convenient before segmentation. The training precision rate and jaccard similarity coefficient reached 93% as a result of segmentation with these results, and the dice coefficient reached 79%. The accuracy rate is 85.5% as a result of the classification in the two-class dataset in the pre-trained VGG16 network. The accuracy rate of dataset classification obtained with cross-validation is 95.86%.
Automated lesion segmentation and dermoscopic feature segmentation for skin cancer analysis

Abstract:Segmentation is the first and most important task in computer-based diagnosis of skin cancer since other tasks are relied mainly on accurately segmented lesions. Recently, deep learning as a mainstream method in machine learning has shown promising results on semantic image segmentation. In this paper, we demonstrate applying deep convolutional networks to two main segmentation tasks in melanoma diagnosis, a lesion segmentation task followed by a lesion dermoscopic feature segmentation task. The proposed method is evaluated on a database from ISBI challenge 2016. By using a hybrid model, computation load for the second task decreases and masks provided by lesion segmentation have been used to enhance the results for the feature segmentation task as well. The results are close to the best results of ISBI challenge 2016. The proposed model yields quite promising results although it is based on very initial hybrid model without an aggressive fine-tuning that is heavily required in Deep Learning implementations. Therefore, there is a room for further improvements.

Abstract:Skin cancer is a major public health problem that could benefit from computer-aided diagnosis to reduce the burden of this common disease. Skin lesion segmentation from images is an important step toward achieving this goal. However, the presence of natural and artificial artifacts (e.g., hair and air bubbles), intrinsic factors (e.g., lesion shape and contrast), and variations in image acquisition conditions make skin lesion segmentation a challenging task. Recently, various researchers have explored the applicability of deep learning models to skin lesion segmentation. In this survey, we cross-examine 177 research papers that deal with deep learning-based segmentation of skin lesions. We analyze these works along several dimensions, including input data (datasets, preprocessing, and synthetic data generation), model design (architecture, modules, and losses), and evaluation aspects (data annotation requirements and segmentation performance). We discuss these dimensions both from the viewpoint of select seminal works, and from a systematic viewpoint, examining how those choices have influenced current trends, and how their limitations should be addressed. To facilitate comparisons, we summarize all examined works in a comprehensive table as well as an interactive table available online<sup>3</sup>.

Abstract:Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that often leads to poor prognostic responses and survival rates. Melanoma usually develops in the limbs, including in fingers, palms, and the margins of the nails. When melanoma is detected early, surgical treatment may achieve a higher cure rate. The early diagnosis of melanoma depends on the manual segmentation of suspected lesions. However, manual segmentation can lead to problems, including misclassification and low efficiency. Therefore, it is essential to devise a method for automatic image segmentation that overcomes the aforementioned issues. In this study, an improved algorithm is proposed, termed EfficientUNet++, which is developed from the U-Net model. In EfficientUNet++, the pretrained EfficientNet model is added to the UNet++ model to accelerate segmentation process, leading to more reliable and precise results in skin cancer image segmentation. Two skin lesion datasets were used to compare the performance of the proposed EfficientUNet++ algorithm with other common models. In the PH2 dataset, EfficientUNet++ achieved a better Dice coefficient (93% vs. 76%–91%), Intersection over Union (IoU, 96% vs. 74%–95%), and loss value (30% vs. 44%–32%) compared with other models. In the International Skin Imaging Collaboration dataset, EfficientUNet++ obtained a similar Dice coefficient (96% vs. 94%–96%) but a better IoU (94% vs. 89%–93%) and loss value (11% vs. 13%–11%) than other models. In conclusion, the EfficientUNet++ model efficiently detects skin lesions by improving composite coefficients and structurally expanding the size of the convolution network. Moreover, the use of residual units deepens the network to further improve performance.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the most common diseases that can be initially detected by visual observation and further with the help of dermoscopic analysis and other tests. As at an initial stage, visual observation gives the opportunity of utilizing artificial intelligence to intercept the different skin images, so several skin lesion classification methods using deep learning based on convolution neural network (CNN) and annotated skin photos exhibit improved results. In this respect, the paper presents a reliable approach for diagnosing skin cancer utilizing dermoscopy images in order to improve health care professionals’ visual perception and diagnostic abilities to discriminate benign from malignant lesions. The swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms were used for skin lesion region of interest (RoI) segmentation from dermoscopy images, and the speeded-up robust features (SURF) was used for feature extraction of the RoI marked as the best segmentation result obtained using the Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA). The skin lesions are classified into two groups using CNN against three data sets, namely, ISIC-2017, ISIC-2018, and PH-2 data sets. The proposed segmentation and classification techniques’ results are assessed in terms of classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F-measure, precision, MCC, dice coefficient, and Jaccard index, with an average classification accuracy of 98.42 percent, precision of 97.73 percent, and MCC of 0.9704 percent. In every performance measure, our suggested strategy exceeds previous work.

Abstract:Accurate segmentation of skin lesions within dermoscopic images plays a crucial role in the timely identification of skin cancer for computer-aided diagnosis on mobile platforms. However, varying shapes of the lesions, lack of defined edges, and the presence of obstructions such as hair strands and marker colors make this challenge more complex. \textcolor{red}Additionally, skin lesions often exhibit subtle variations in texture and color that are difficult to differentiate from surrounding healthy skin, necessitating models that can capture both fine-grained details and broader contextual information. Currently, melanoma segmentation models are commonly based on fully connected networks and U-Nets. However, these models often struggle with capturing the complex and varied characteristics of skin lesions, such as the presence of indistinct boundaries and diverse lesion appearances, which can lead to suboptimal segmentation <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://performance.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> address these challenges, we propose a novel lightweight network specifically designed for skin lesion segmentation utilizing mobile devices, featuring a minimal number of learnable parameters (only 0.8 million). This network comprises an encoder-decoder architecture that incorporates conformer-based focal modulation attention, self-aware local and global spatial attention, and split channel-shuffle. The efficacy of our model has been evaluated on four well-established benchmark datasets for skin lesion segmentation: ISIC 2016, ISIC 2017, ISIC 2018, and PH2. Empirical findings substantiate its state-of-the-art performance, notably reflected in a high Jaccard index.

Abstract:PurposeSkin disease is a prevalent type of physical ailment that can manifest in multitude of forms. Many internal diseases can be directly reflected on the skin, and if left unattended, skin diseases can potentially develop into skin cancer. Accurate and effective segmentation of skin lesions, especially melanoma, is critical for early detection and diagnosis of skin cancer. However, the complex color variations, boundary ambiguity, and scale variations in skin lesion regions present significant challenges for precise segmentation.MethodsWe propose a novel approach for melanoma segmentation using a dual-branch interactive U-Net architecture. Two distinct sampling strategies are simultaneously integrated into the network, creating a vertical dual-branch structure. Meanwhile, we introduce a novel dual-channel symmetrical convolution block (DCS-Conv), which employs a symmetrical design, enabling the network to exhibit a horizontal dual-branch structure. The combination of the vertical and horizontal distribution of the dual-branch structure enhances both the depth and width of the network, providing greater diversity and rich multiscale cascade features. Additionally, this paper introduces a novel module called the residual fuse-and-select module (RFS module), which leverages self-attention mechanisms to focus on the specific skin cancer features and reduce irrelevant artifacts, further improving the segmentation accuracy.ResultsWe evaluated our approach on two publicly skin cancer datasets, ISIC2016 and PH2, and achieved state-of-the-art results, surpassing previous outcomes in terms of segmentation accuracy and overall performance.ConclusionOur proposed approach holds tremendous potential to aid dermatologists in clinical decision-making.

Abstract:Skin lesion is a severe disease in world-wide extent. Early detection of melanoma in dermoscopy images significantly increases the survival rate. However, the accurate recognition of melanoma is extremely challenging due to the following reasons, e.g. low contrast between lesions and skin, visual similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma lesions, etc. Hence, reliable automatic detection of skin tumors is very useful to increase the accuracy and efficiency of pathologists. International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) is a challenge focusing on the automatic analysis of skin lesion. In this paper, we proposed two deep learning methods to address all the three tasks announced in ISIC 2017, i.e. lesion segmentation (task 1), lesion dermoscopic feature extraction (task 2) and lesion classification (task 3). A deep learning framework consisting of two fully-convolutional residual networks (FCRN) is proposed to simultaneously produce the segmentation result and the coarse classification result. A lesion index calculation unit (LICU) is developed to refine the coarse classification results by calculating the distance heat-map. A straight-forward CNN is proposed for the dermoscopic feature extraction task. To our best knowledges, we are not aware of any previous work proposed for this task. The proposed deep learning frameworks were evaluated on the ISIC 2017 testing set. Experimental results show the promising accuracies of our frameworks, i.e. 0.718 for task 1, 0.833 for task 2 and 0.823 for task 3 were achieved.

Deep Transfer Learning for Automated Diagnosis of Skin Lesions from Photographs

Abstract:Melanoma is not the most common form of skin cancer, but it is the most deadly. Currently, the disease is diagnosed by expert dermatologists, which is costly and requires timely access to medical treatment. Recent advances in deep learning have the potential to improve diagnostic performance, expedite urgent referrals and reduce burden on clinicians. Through smart phones, the technology could reach people who would not normally have access to such healthcare services, e.g. in remote parts of the world, due to financial constraints or in 2020, COVID-19 cancellations. To this end, we have investigated various transfer learning approaches by leveraging model parameters pre-trained on ImageNet with finetuning on melanoma detection. We compare EfficientNet, MnasNet, MobileNet, DenseNet, SqueezeNet, ShuffleNet, GoogleNet, ResNet, ResNeXt, VGG and a simple CNN with and without transfer learning. We find the mobile network, EfficientNet (with transfer learning) achieves the best mean performance with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.931$\pm$0.005 and an area under the precision recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.840$\pm$0.010. This is significantly better than general practitioners (0.83$\pm$0.03 AUROC) and dermatologists (0.91$\pm$0.02 AUROC).

Abstract:We study a sequential auction for sharing a wireless resource (bandwidth or power) among competing transmitters. The resource is assumed to be managed by a spectrum broker (auctioneer), who collects bids and allocates discrete units of the resource via a sequential second-price auction. It is well known that a second price auction for a single indivisible good has an efficient dominant strategy equilibrium; this is no longer the case when multiple units of a homogeneous good are sold in repeated iterations. For two users with full information, we show that such an auction has a unique equilibrium allocation. The worst-case efficiency of this allocation is characterized under the following cases: (i) both bidders have a concave valuation for the spectrum resource, and (ii) one bidder has a concave valuation and the other bidder has a convex valuation (e.g., for the other useriquests power). Although the worst-case efficiency loss can be significant, numerical results are presented, which show that for randomly placed transmitter-receiver pairs with rate utility functions, the sequential second-price auction typically achieves the efficient allocation. For more than two users it is shown that this mechanism always has a pure strategy equilibrium, but in general there may be multiple equilibria. We give a constructive procedure for finding one equilibrium; numerical results show that when all users have concave valuations the efficiency loss decreases with an increase in the number of users.
LSCS-Net: A lightweight skin cancer segmentation network with densely connected multi-rate atrous convolution

Abstract:The rising occurrence and notable public health consequences of skin cancer, especially of the most challenging form known as melanoma, have created an urgent demand for more advanced approaches to disease management. The integration of modern computer vision methods into clinical procedures offers the potential for enhancing the detection of skin cancer . The UNet model has gained prominence as a valuable tool for this objective, continuously evolving to tackle the difficulties associated with the inherent diversity of dermatological images. These challenges stem from diverse medical origins and are further complicated by variations in lighting, patient characteristics, and hair density. In this work, we present an innovative end-to-end trainable network crafted for the segmentation of skin cancer . This network comprises an encoder–decoder architecture, a novel feature extraction block, and a densely connected multi-rate Atrous convolution block. We evaluated the performance of the proposed lightweight skin cancer segmentation network (LSCS-Net) on three widely used benchmark datasets for skin lesion segmentation: ISIC 2016, ISIC 2017, and ISIC 2018. The generalization capabilities of LSCS-Net are testified by the excellent performance on breast cancer and thyroid nodule segmentation datasets. The empirical findings confirm that LSCS-net attains state-of-the-art results, as demonstrated by a significantly elevated Jaccard index.

The Effects of Skin Lesion Segmentation on the Performance of Dermatoscopic Image Classification

Abstract:Malignant melanoma (MM) is one of the deadliest types of skin cancer. Analysing dermatoscopic images plays an important role in the early detection of MM and other pigmented skin lesions. Among different computer-based methods, deep learning-based approaches and in particular convolutional neural networks have shown excellent classification and segmentation performances for dermatoscopic skin lesion images. These models can be trained end-to-end without requiring any hand-crafted features. However, the effect of using lesion segmentation information on classification performance has remained an open question. In this study, we explicitly investigated the impact of using skin lesion segmentation masks on the performance of dermatoscopic image classification. To do this, first, we developed a baseline classifier as the reference model without using any segmentation masks. Then, we used either manually or automatically created segmentation masks in both training and test phases in different scenarios and investigated the classification performances. Evaluated on the ISIC 2017 challenge dataset which contained two binary classification tasks (i.e. MM vs. all and seborrheic keratosis (SK) vs. all) and based on the derived area under the receiver operating characteristic curve scores, we observed four main outcomes. Our results show that 1) using segmentation masks did not significantly improve the MM classification performance in any scenario, 2) in one of the scenarios (using segmentation masks for dilated cropping), SK classification performance was significantly improved, 3) removing all background information by the segmentation masks significantly degraded the overall classification performance, and 4) in case of using the appropriate scenario (using segmentation for dilated cropping), there is no significant difference of using manually or automatically created segmentation masks.

Deep Learning for Skin Lesion Classification

Abstract:Melanoma, a malignant form of skin cancer is very threatening to life. Diagnosis of melanoma at an earlier stage is highly needed as it has a very high cure rate. Benign and malignant forms of skin cancer can be detected by analyzing the lesions present on the surface of the skin using dermoscopic images. In this work, an automated skin lesion detection system has been developed which learns the representation of the image using Google's pretrained CNN model known as Inception-v3 \cite{cnn}. After obtaining the representation vector for our input dermoscopic images we have trained two layer feed forward neural network to classify the images as malignant or benign. The system also classifies the images based on the cause of the cancer either due to melanocytic or non-melanocytic cells using a different neural network. These classification tasks are part of the challenge organized by International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) 2017. Our system learns to classify the images based on the model built using the training images given in the challenge and the experimental results were evaluated using validation and test sets. Our system has achieved an overall accuracy of 65.8\% for the validation set.

Channel Attention Separable Convolution Network for Skin Lesion Segmentation

Abstract:Skin cancer is a frequently occurring cancer in the human population, and it is very important to be able to diagnose malignant tumors in the body early. Lesion segmentation is crucial for monitoring the morphological changes of skin lesions, extracting features to localize and identify diseases to assist doctors in early diagnosis. Manual de-segmentation of dermoscopic images is error-prone and time-consuming, thus there is a pressing demand for precise and automated segmentation algorithms. Inspired by advanced mechanisms such as U-Net, DenseNet, Separable Convolution, Channel Attention, and Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP), we propose a novel network called Channel Attention Separable Convolution Network (CASCN) for skin lesions segmentation. The proposed CASCN is evaluated on the PH2 dataset with limited images. Without excessive pre-/post-processing of images, CASCN achieves state-of-the-art performance on the PH2 dataset with Dice similarity coefficient of 0.9461 and accuracy of 0.9645.

Abstract:Nowadays, quality improvement and increased accessibility to patient data, at a reasonable cost, are highly challenging tasks in healthcare sector. Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud Computing (CC) architectures are utilized in the development of smart healthcare systems. These entities can support real-time applications by exploiting massive volumes of data, produced by wearable sensor devices. The advent of evolutionary computation algorithms and Deep Learning (DL) models has gained significant attention in healthcare diagnosis, especially in decision making process. Skin cancer is the deadliest disease which affects people across the globe. Automatic skin lesion classification model has a highly important application due to its fine-grained variability in the presence of skin lesions. The current research article presents a new skin lesion diagnosis model i.e., Deep Learning with Evolutionary Algorithm based Image Segmentation (DL-EAIS) for IoT and cloud-based smart healthcare environments. Primarily, the dermoscopic images are captured using IoT devices, which are then transmitted to cloud servers for further diagnosis. Besides, Backtracking Search optimization Algorithm (BSA) with Entropy-Based Thresholding (EBT) i.e., BSA-EBT technique is applied in image segmentation. Followed by, Shallow Convolutional Neural Network (SCNN) model is utilized as a feature extractor. In addition, Deep-Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (D-KELM) model is employed as a classification model to determine the class labels of dermoscopic images. An extensive set of simulations was conducted to validate the performance of the presented method using benchmark dataset. The experimental outcome infers that the proposed model demonstrated optimal performance over the compared techniques under diverse measures.

Abstract:Skin cancer is a highly lethal disease, and detecting it at an early stage is critical. Skin lesion segmentation is a complex process involving identifying the infected area in an image with low contrast, variable size, and position. This task is essential in medical analysis, as it helps clinicians focus on a specific area of the image before further analysis. Our paper introduces a new method for improving the segmentation of medical images by providing the efficient neural connections to design efficient U-Net architecture. We have utilized skip paths to the encoder and minimize the semantic gap between concatenated feature maps. This leads to more precise segmentation outcomes. We have used the PH2 and ISIC-2018 as benchmark dataset to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and surpass the available benhcmark performance. We have obtained approximately 96.18% accuracy with the PH2 dataset and 96.09% accuracy with the ISIC-2018 dataset. The outcomes of our architecture are quite impressive, and they exhibit superior performance over both the baseline model and other state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract:Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, has seen a steady increase in incidence rates worldwide, posing a significant challenge to dermatologists. Early detection is crucial for improving patient survival rates. However, performing total body screening (TBS), i.e., identifying suspicious lesions or ugly ducklings (UDs) by visual inspection, can be challenging and often requires sound expertise in pigmented lesions. To assist users of varying expertise levels, an artificial intelligence (AI) decision support tool was developed. Our solution identifies and characterizes UDs from real-world wide-field patient images. It employs a state-of-the-art object detection algorithm to locate and isolate all skin lesions present in a patient's total body images. These lesions are then sorted based on their level of suspiciousness using a self-supervised AI approach, tailored to the specific context of the patient under examination. A clinical validation study was conducted to evaluate the tool's performance. The results demonstrated an average sensitivity of 95% for the top-10 AI-identified UDs on skin lesions selected by the majority of experts in pigmented skin lesions. The study also found that the tool increased dermatologists' confidence when formulating a diagnosis, and the average majority agreement with the top-10 AI-identified UDs reached 100% when assisted by our tool. With the development of this AI-based decision support tool, we aim to address the shortage of specialists, enable faster consultation times for patients, and demonstrate the impact and usability of AI-assisted screening. Future developments will include expanding the dataset to include histologically confirmed melanoma and validating the tool for additional body regions.

Abstract:One of the most dangerous types of skin cancer, malignant melanoma, must be detected early on in order to receive successful therapy. If melanoma is not diagnosed in a timely manner, it might possibly result in death. According to clinical research, because of their varied hue, texture, and imperceptible borders, these early melanoma indications are very challenging for dermatologists to recognize. Therefore, it's crucial to suggest an automated method that can accurately identify and distinguish between benign and malignant melanoma. Numerous automated methods have been developed by scientists to segment abnormalities from dermoscopic images. On the other hand, conventional models could find it difficult to reliably capture the multi-scale properties, which could result in inconsistent segmentation performance for a variety of object shapes and sizes. Furthermore, models with complicated forms and bounds, such as U-Net and DeepLabV3+, have difficulty properly segmenting tiny, thin, or complex lesions. Thus, we introduce A Squeeze-Excitation Dilated Residual U-Net with Attention Mechanism (SEDARU-Net) in this paper, a novel and automated semantic segmentation network for efficient skin lesion segmentation. To keep spatial information across layers and capture both local and global context, the model is built on U-net combined with dilated convolution. To solve optimization problems, residual blocks are used instead of the basic U-net units. This enhances feature learning, encourages better feature reuse, and allows for the creation of deeper and more robust networks. In order to encourage feature recalibration, global context awareness, and spatial adaptation, each residual block is supplemented with squeeze and excitation units. In addition, The attention gate is also included in the skip connection part of the network to enhance the beneficial channel dimension characteristics and suppress the unreliable background features. According to the results of the experiments on the publicly accessible PH2 dataset, the dice coefficient and intersection over union were determined to be 97.48% and 95.10%, respectively, better than those of current standard methods.

Abstract:The deadliest form of skin lesion is known as melanoma. Detection of melanoma at earlier stages significantly raises the rate of survival. Nevertheless, the precise detection of melanoma is very challenging for reasons like lower contrast among skin and lesion, visual similarity among non-melanoma and melanoma lesions, etc. This work presents a new melanoma detection approach, which is comprised of 3 foremost stages like: segmentation, feature extraction and detection. Beginning with segmentation, a new algorithm called the Self Adaptive Sea Lion Algorithm (SA-SLnO) is used to improve the K-means clustering model's initial centroids in a way that maximizes performance. Here, the multi-objective considerations of intensity diverse centroid, geographical map, and frequency of occurrence, respectively, are used to carry out the best selection. Further, from the segmented images, the texture features were extracted, and they are subjected to "Deep Belief Network (DBN)" for melanoma detection. Eventually, the supremacy of the presented model is confirmed over existing models in terms of various measures.
