Abstract:INTRODUCTION Shortage of intensive care beds has led to more frequent use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) outside respiratory units, and data on NIV efficacy and safety on general wards is lacking. OBJECTIVE The aim was to identify potential predictors for NIV failure. METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of patients treated with NIV at the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases of Vojvodina from 2009 to 2013. Demographics, blood gases, chest radiographs, setting, and outcomes were analyzed to identify predictors of NIV failure. RESULTS A total of 138 patients (65% men, mean age 66 ± 11 years) were treated with NIV. Indications for NIV were acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (85%) and cardiogenic pulmonary edema (7%), as well as respiratory insufficiency related to obesity and central hypoventilation (5%) and neuromuscular disease (3%). Rate of NIV failure was 34.8%. In 86 patients NIV was applied in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), while 52 received NIV on the general ward. Baseline characteristics in terms of gender, arterial blood gases, and the extent of consolidation on chest radiographs were similar. Patients treated in HDU were younger (64.4 ± 1.2 vs. 69.4 ± 1.5 years, p < 0.001). NIV on the general ward compared to HDU had higher rates of NIV failure (28/52 vs. 20/86, p < 0.001). Presence of consolidation involving two or more quadrants on chest radiograph (55% vs. 29%, p < 0.001) was associated with NIV failure. When adjusted for age and the extent of consolidation on chest radiograph, NIV failure was still less likely in patients treated in HDU (OR 0.23, 95% Cl 0.10-0.50). CONCLUSION Patients with consolidation on chest X-ray and patients treated with NIV outside of dedicated respiratory units are at a higher risk for NIV failure.
Design and students' perceptions of a virtually facilitated outpatient pharmacy practice laboratory course

Abstract:Background and purpose: Web conferencing, interactive video conferencing, and classroom and lecture capture are widely used in pharmacy education. This study aimed to determine student pharmacists' receptiveness to a virtually facilitated outpatient pharmacy practice laboratory course. Educational activity and setting: A new course design was implemented for a first-year (P1) laboratory course utilizing Zoom, an internet-based "cloud" video and chat conference room, for communication across two campuses. Physical campus attendance and Zoom connection were required for each laboratory session. Students voluntarily and anonymously completed a survey at course start and conclusion to evaluate course design and impact on student learning. Findings: The pre-survey was completed by 77 students (82%) and 82 students completed the post-survey (87%). Students agreed or strongly agreed that virtual facilitation did not hinder learning and disagreed or strongly disagreed that a facilitator needs to be physically present to simplify learning. Students concluded there is no difference in virtual or in person facilitator communication. While students agreed the experience enabled development of problem-solving skills and fostered self-awareness and responsibility for self-learning, this was not statistically significant. Summary: These results provide insight into students' perceptions of a virtually facilitated laboratory course design. This may be an alternative to live facilitation without impacting student development in the areas of problem solving, self-awareness, and responsibility for self-learning. Schools and colleges of pharmacy might consider virtual laboratory facilitation as an innovative course design.
Online teaching and learning of a pharmacy curriculum designed for active learning and professional skills development - A report of students' perceptions and learning experience in two international campuses

Abstract:Background and purpose: Pharmacy students' perception of the effectiveness of remote online learning experienced during the pandemic, and their learning expectations post-pandemic were unknown. The main purpose of this study was to examine students' perceived effectiveness of online teaching and learning activities developed for active learning and pharmacy professional skills development, and the feasibility of online assessments. Educational activity and setting: A cross-sectional online survey involving second-year pharmacy students of Monash Malaysia (MA) and Monash Australia (PA) campuses was conducted. The survey consisted of 15 Likert-scale multiple-choice questions and an open-ended question. Data were analysed statistically. Findings: Students at both MA and PA campuses were satisfied with the remote online learning experienced during the pandemic but indicated a preference for a blended learning approach. Students at the MA campus felt that on-campus face-to-face classes were more engaging and advantageous for their learning and skills development (P < .05), and on-campus assessments allowed them to engage and perform better (P < .05) compared with students at the PA campus who felt neutral or disagreed. Both student cohorts were happy with some of the lectures being conducted online synchronously or asynchronously. Summary: Differences in cultures, and learning behaviour and preference may influence learners' perceptions and expectations of online learning. This study suggests that blended learning involving both online and face-to-face interactive activities may promote engagement, satisfaction, and outcomes of culturally diverse learner populations post-pandemic.

Effectiveness of flipped classroom with Poll Everywhere as a teaching-learning method for pharmacy students

Abstract:Objectives: Flipped classroom (FC) is a pedagogical model to engage students in learning process by replacing the didactic lectures. Using technology, lectures are moved out of the classroom and delivered online as means to provide interaction and collaboration. Poll Everywhere is an audience response system (ARS) which can be used in an FC to make the activities more interesting, engaging, and interactive. This study aims to study the perception of undergraduate pharmacy students on FC activity using Poll Everywhere ARS and to study the effectiveness of FC activity as a teaching-learning tool for delivering complementary medicine module in the undergraduate pharmacy program. Materials and methods: In this nonrandomized trial on interrupted time series study, flipped class was conducted on group of 112 students of bachelor of pharmacy semester V. The topic selected was popular herbal remedies of the complementary medicine module. Flipped class was conducted with audio and video presentation in the form of a quiz using ten one-best-answer type of multiple-choice questions covering the learning objectives. Audience response was captured using web-based interaction with Poll Everywhere. Feedback was obtained from participants at the end of FC activity and debriefing was done. Results: Randomly selected 112 complete responses were included in the final analysis. There were 47 (42%) male and 65 (58%) female respondents. The overall Cronbach's alpha of feedback questionnaire was 0.912. The central tendencies and dispersions of items in the questionnaire indicated the effectiveness of FC. The low or middle achievers of quiz session (pretest) during the FC activity were three times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.1-8.9) at the risk of providing neutral or negative feedback than high achievers (P = 0.040). Those who gave neutral or negative feedback on FC activity were 3.9 times (95% CI = 1.3-11.8) at the risk of becoming low or middle achievers during the end of semester examination (P = 0.013). The multivariate analysis of "Agree" or "Disagree" and "Agree" or "Strongly Agree" was statistically significant. Conclusion: This study provides insight on how the pharmacy students learn and develop their cognitive functions. The results revealed that the FC activity with Poll Everywhere is an effective teaching-learning method.
Introduction and Assessment of a Blended-Learning Model to Teach Patient Assessment in a Doctor of Pharmacy Program

Abstract:Objective. To integrate a blended-learning model into a two-course patient assessment sequence in a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program and to assess the academic performance and perceptions of enrolled students. Design. A blended-learning model consisting of a flipped classroom format was integrated into a patient assessment (PA) course sequence. Course grades of students in the blended-learning (intervention) and traditional-classroom (control) groups were compared. A survey was administered to assess student perceptions. Assessment. The mean numeric grades of students in the intervention group were higher than those of students in the traditional group (PA1 course: 92.2±3.1 vs 90.0±4.3; and PA2 course: 90.3±4.9 vs 85.8±4.2). Eighty-six percent of the students in the intervention group agreed that the instructional methodologies used in this course facilitated understanding of the material. Conclusion. The blended-learning model was associated with improved academic performance and was well-received by students.

Online vs classroom instruction: student satisfaction and learning outcomes in an undergraduate Allied Health pharmacology course.

Abstract:UNLABELLED Online instruction is frequently utilized in allied health education yet only a small number of controlled comparative studies specifically in healthcare education have been published. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare student satisfaction and objective learning outcomes of an undergraduate allied health online pharmacology course using streaming media lectures to traditional classroom instruction. METHODS The online (n=47) and classroom (n=177) courses for fall 2005 and spring 2006 used the same instructor, notes, text, learning objectives, and exams. Student characteristics, learning style preferences, and aptitude for distance learning were measured. A statistically reliable, valid survey measured student satisfaction with elements of the course, instructor, and self-perceived knowledge gains. Learning outcomes were evaluated using withdrawal rates and exam scores. RESULTS Mean satisfaction scores for both courses were high, generally >4.0/5.0. Mean scores from the classroom students were significantly higher than online students regarding students' ability to share ideas, instructor's ability to establish rapport, self-perceived knowledge gains, fundamental principles and application of material, and overall excellence of course. There were no significant differences in objective exam scores or withdrawal rates. CONCLUSION The online and classroom pharmacology courses had similar withdrawal rates and exam scores, indicating similar learning gains. Overall, both courses had high student satisfaction ratings in all 43 criteria measured. However, students in the online course were less satisfied with 8 criteria related to student satisfaction with instructor rapport, course excellence, peer interaction, and self-perceived knowledge gains.

Abstract:Background: Participation in international experiences can promote personal and professional growth, but students in schools of pharmacy may face barriers in pursuing overseas experiences. Objectives: The objectives of this report are to describe the design, implementation, and student perceptions of an online course co-taught by two schools of pharmacy in different countries for students at both institutions. Methods: The course was established through an ongoing partnership between the universities and was focused on diabetes based on mutual interest and expertise. The course was offered in a three-hour period weekly using short lectures, small group discussions and projects. Results: Cross-cultural learning was emphasised by forming student groups with representation from both universities. In a post-course survey and reflection, students reported gaining new knowledge, perspectives, and transferable skills as a result of the international nature of the course. Conclusion: The online international course broadened students’ views of pharmacists’ roles and strengthened the partnership between the two universities.
The impact of interactive synchronous HyFlex model on student academic performance in a large active learning introductory college design course

Abstract:HyFlex learning environments have been meeting the unique needs of students and institutions for nearly 20 years. However, it was the pandemic that gave HyFlex its widespread acceptance and application. Literature suggests that HyFlex may now be considered part of the new norm in education and therefore, further study is needed on how it affects both teaching and learning. Our flipped design thinking course leverages active learning requiring the instructor and students to interact extensively. We piloted a specific version of HyFlex we named "Interactive Synchronous HyFlex" where students can participate on a daily basis in person or synchronously online. In this specific instance of HyFlex we explore: (1) Does student academic performance differ in the HyFlex environment compared to the Face to Face only environment? And (2) Does student academic performance differ based on how they chose to participate in the HyFlex course? Data were collected for this quasi-experimental study design on overall semester grades and three significant design projects during the semester. We compared the course offered as a Face to Face only experience to the course offered as a HyFlex course enabling remote participation. Second, we parse students in the HyFlex course into two categories: those who did not participate remotely vs. those who participated remotely once or more times. Students in the HyFlex course had a significantly different grade distribution earning more A's and more F's than their Face to Face only counterparts. Given the positive results of the Interactive Synchronous HyFlex approach, we plan to continue implementing it in our introductory design course though we will increase our attention on the remote students as they may need additional scaffolding to be successful.
Perspectives of educators and students on the efficacy of online teaching and learning strategies employed during COVID-19 in a health sciences institution

Abstract:Background: Healthcare education encountered unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the necessary responses have also provided learning opportunities for the future. Aims: We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on teaching and learning strategies and the perceptions of clinical educators and health sciences students on novel methods to improve online student engagement in Ireland's largest medical school. Methods: Two separate online surveys designed to gain insights into the perceived efficacy of online teaching strategies were distributed to clinical educators and health sciences students (medical and pharmacy) over 7 months via email. Results: A total of 86.4% of educators responded that rapport was more difficult to build online, and 90.5% reported less engagement from students online. The most popular methods that improved student engagement included using polls, a chat box function for questions, small group discussions and having student cameras turned on. Amongst educators surveyed, 81.8% felt a training course focused on teaching strategies at the start of every academic year would be beneficial. From the students' perspective, no difference was noted between the medicine and the pharmacy students. Seventy-five percent reported using quizzes/polls, and 63% reported using game-based platforms as techniques to improve online learning. Sixty-two percent of students described it as a positive outcome of learning during the pandemic. Conclusion: Any pandemic poses unique challenges to the delivery of healthcare education. These surveys report educators' and students' views on online teaching and learning strategies, highlighting novel mechanisms to improve student engagement and ultimately impact on graduate outcomes.
Getting in Synch: Understanding Student Perceptions of Synchronous Online Instruction

Abstract:Aim/Purpose: This study examines the impact of transitioning from in-person classrooms to remote online business education and provides analysis of key factors impacting course and instructor ratings as well as strategies for higher education institutions to provide engaging instruction. Background: “Zoom”ing into teaching and moving out of traditional classrooms during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a path full of twists and has impacted student perceptions of courses as well as instructors. One challenge has been to make the quality of synchronous online instruction perceived by students as positive as classroom-delivered ones. Methodology: We analyze primary data collected in the course evaluation process from Business & Accounting students over six semesters between Fall 2019 to Spring 2022, covering pre-pandemic instruction in the classroom and the conversion to virtual instruction via Zoom. A total of 1782 observations for 38 courses were examined using mean comparison, regression and correlation analyses, and pairwise comparisons. Contribution: We provide insights from the evaluation of those instructors who were able to make their Zoom-delivered courses perceived by students as equivalent or better than room-delivered ones. Specifically, clear presentation, stimulating delivery, providing feedback and encouraging discussion were positively correlated with successful online classes. Findings: We find that there is a clear downward shift in course and instructor ratings as the change to synchronous online delivery was made. However, in the Spring of 2022, even though instructors and students were still not completely back in the classroom, both instructor and course ratings moved back closer to the pre-pandemic levels. The parameters associated with instructor ratings, such as providing feedback, clear presentations, stimulating sessions, and encouraging discussion, showed similar downward fluctuations. Also, aspects related to course content were affected by the transition to online modality, including training on critical thinking quantitative analysis, research and writing abilities, and overall usefulness of the content. Moore’s model of Transactional Distance helps explain these changes. Recommendations for Practitioners: We recommend that practitioners allow sufficient time for students and faculty to learn through online instruction delivery and supply training for both populations in adapting to learning in this delivery mode. Recommendation for Researchers: The disruption in higher education caused by COVID-19 has provided a wealth of information on the pluses and minuses of online delivery. Careful inspection of trends can help provide guidance to higher education leaders. Impact on Society: One of the many changes the COVID-19 pandemic brought was the opportunity to try alternate ways of connecting and learning. This study shows how this experience can be used to guide the future of higher education. Future Research: Further research is needed to explore the in-depth reactions of students and faculty to the switch from classroom to online delivery, to explore whether these findings can be more broadly applied to other subjects and other types of universities.

Promoting Pedagogical Resilience: Unveiling the Efficacy of Synchronous Online Lectures Compared to Traditional Methods From the Students' Vantage Point Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted traditional educational methods, forcing medical institutes to adapt to online classes. Since online teaching was an untested approach in Indian medical education, student feedback was essential. This study compares synchronous online lectures with traditional classroom lectures from the students' perspective. Method The cross-sectional study was conducted on undergraduate medical students across India undergoing synchronous online MBBS classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. After obtaining institutional ethical clearance, five-section questionnaires via Google Forms were circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook. The generated quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequency analysis. Result Out of 341 responses, 64 students did not consent and were excluded, resulting in 277 responses for analysis. The total score for traditional face-to-face lectures was 11.61 out of 15, with a percentage mean score of 77%, highlighting the significant positive influence of instructor presence and a conducive learning environment. In contrast, synchronous online lectures had a total score of 16.01 out of 25, with a percentage mean score of 64.04%, reflecting mixed responses. The Student's t-test analysis underscored the significant advantages of face-to-face interactions and structured learning environments in traditional classroom settings despite the flexibility and independence offered by synchronous online lectures. Conclusion The findings of this study reveal that students have a moderate level of satisfaction with synchronous online lectures, as indicated by a mean score of 64.04%. While these lectures provide flexibility and promote independence, they require students to exhibit higher levels of self-motivation, discipline, and self-directed learning. However, the online format poses challenges for effective communication and technical issues. Addressing the challenges of technology use, teacher training, and student engagement can enhance the effectiveness of online teaching and ensure that it complements traditional teaching methods, ultimately promoting pedagogical resilience in medical education.

Abstract:Abstract In 2020, King’s College London introduced HyFlex teaching as a means to supplement online and face-to-face teaching and to respond to Covid-19 restrictions. This enabled teaching to a mixed cohort of students (both online and on campus). This article provides an outline of how such an approach was conceptualized and implemented in a higher-education institution during an intense three-month period over that summer and prior to the limited re-opening of the university campus. This was a new approach that offers a number of pointers for reflection and provides key insights in on this novel learning environment and the physical and pedagogical contexts in which learning can occur. Technical implementation factors are detailed, along with both reflections on challenges and solutions. Pedagogical issues such as cognitive load, social presence, and resolving the issues of a cohort spread across two locations are discussed. While we should be mindful of the limitations of this relatively-specific research, and shouldn’t therefore over-extrapolate our findings, one key finding is that delivering Hyflex is associated with a higher cognitive load. Further, the audio quality of our implementation enhanced the feeling of presence in the learning environment. We recommend providing appropriate technical and pedagogical training, as well as audio-visual and digital education support.
An innovative approach to teaching depression and anxiety medication management: Virtual choose your own adventure, psychiatry edition

Abstract:Introduction: Rates of depression and anxiety continue to increase in the United States. It's important for pharmacy students to graduate knowledgeable and confident in treating these disorders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a virtual active-learning exercise (choose your own adventure) is helpful in teaching students how to manage medications for depression and anxiety. Methods: Third-year pharmacy students responded to preactivity questions and then worked on a single patient case in which the presenting problem is worsening depression and anxiety. Students worked in virtual groups of 4 to 5 to select 1 treatment among 5 multiple-choice options and documented the rationale for their choice. Each multiple-choice option led to a different follow-up case. After writing their assessment and plan, the instructor debriefed on therapeutic concepts from each follow-up case. Students then answered postactivity questions and participated in a voluntary survey consisting of 10 retrospective questions. Results: Of 106 participants, 85 completed the survey (80.2% response rate). Most agreed that their understanding of treatment of depression and anxiety disorders increased following participation (92.9% strongly/somewhat agreed). This was supported by an increase in the percentage of correct responses on the knowledge questions (preactivity: 67.2%, n = 91; postactivity: 83.5%, n = 97; P = .01). Additionally, students reported their confidence in their understanding of depression and anxiety management increased following activity participation (93.0% strongly/somewhat agreed). Discussion: The virtual active-learning exercise improved student knowledge and confidence in managing depression and anxiety treatments. Educators teaching depression and anxiety pharmacotherapy may consider implementing such activity into their lecture(s).

Abstract:Premixed insulins (e.g., Actraphane) are best avoided because of the likely risk of hypoglycemia in the afternoon (6). Insulin-requiring type 2 diabetic patients should follow the same regimen as outlined for type 1 diabetic patients (5). Home blood glucose monitoring, which is now regarded as an important prerequisite in the management of insulintreated diabetic patients, should be mandatory in those insulin-treated patients who wish to fast. This way, a close watch could be kept on overall control, as well as on hypoglycemic episodes that may require adjustments to insulin dose or termination of the fast. Diabetic patients should be advised that neither the pinprick required to do home blood glucose monitoring nor injecting oneself with insulin will break the fast (5,6). During Ramadan, control should continue to be assessed on the basis of home blood glucose monitoring, as well as clinicbased tests. Investigation should be made of hypoglycemic episodes or very high blood glucose levels, and appropriate dose adjustments should be made or the patient may be advised to discontinue fasting. After Ramadan, the patients therapeutic regimen will need to be changed back to what it was previously. An overall evaluation will also be required.
Blended learning in nursing pharmacology: elevating cognitive skills, engagement and academic outcomes

Abstract:Pharmacological education is crucial for healthcare professionals to safely manage medications and reduce errors. Traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) often struggles to address this complexity, whereas newer methods, such as flipped classrooms and problem-based learning, yield mixed results, particularly in pre-clinical contexts, owing to students' limited experience. Our nursing pharmacology course under LBL recorded a high failure rate of 37.8% and marginal passing scores across five cohorts ( n = 849 students). An analysis using Bloom's taxonomy revealed significant gaps in higher-order cognitive skills. As a remedy, the course was transformed into a novel blended learning format that integrated question-based learning (QBL) to enhance critical thinking across all cognitive levels. This model blends asynchronous and synchronous learning, is tailored to individual needs in large classes, and fosters continuous, student-centric learning. The redesign markedly decreased the failure rate by approximately 2.8-fold and increased the average grade by 11.8 points among 426 students. It notably improved the pass rates in advanced cognitive categories, such as "Evaluate" and "Create" by 19.0% and 24.2%, respectively. Additionally, the blended course showed increased student engagement, reflecting a dynamic and effective learning environment that significantly elevated participation and academic outcomes at all cognitive levels. This study demonstrated the profound impact of blended learning in pharmacology. By integrating QBL with various teaching methods, it surpasses traditional lecture-based limitations, enhancing engagement and understanding of complex topics by nursing students. Notable improvements in foundational and advanced learning suggest its broader application in health professionals' education, effectively equipping students for clinical pharmacology challenges.

Abstract:Covid-19 has impacted many areas of New Zealand’s higher education system, with most universities forced to transfer activities away from the traditional campus-based learning toward online platforms. This has resulted in a transformation from face-to-face teacher centred (objectivist) methods to online digital hybrid programs that aim to enhance the constructivist, learner-centred pedagogy. Prior to Covid-19 a change of approach within higher education would usually take several years to develop but was now required within a limited number of days (Strielkowski, 2020). This had the potential to impact the educational experience and motivation by providing content without flexibility or an understanding of different learning styles. The absence of a thoughtful design and development process has therefore resulted in some recent online education being seen as ‘crisis education’ (Bozkurt & Sharma, 2020; Hodges et al., 2020; Vlachopoulos, 2020). Whilst it was impossible to anticipate the shift to online learning, the instructional achievement of online education is often questioned due to a lack of face-to-face student community (Joshi et al., 2020). An additional challenge is that online education is not suited to all aspects of clinical learning. The reason for this is that online learning is not compatible with the kinaesthetic (hands-on) activities that are required for clinical practice (Leszczynski et al., 2018). Effective higher education must have a comprehensive understanding of the limitations and benefits of both asynchronous and synchronous online learning (Omotayo & Haliru, 2020). To address the complexity of online learning and digital competency in this evolving environment it is important that students feel relevancy and motivation (Omotayo & Haliru, 2020). The current situation has led to investigation and implementation of content to support the online clinical student to promote engagement and offer a flexible learning experience. In addition, it was important that the system was designed to support different student learning styles and provide a community of learning. The content was developed using Spark Adobe software to provide a range of asynchronous visual content with a flipped classroom approach. The content also had a strong lean toward the auditory learner by offering the material in a podcast listening form. In conjunction with this, each weekly topic was later ‘flipped’ as a synchronous case study group discussion forum. Universities and their social role within the pandemic are recognised as important support mechanisms for the online student (Wang & Zha, 2018). The findings for our work were that students felt engaged with the content and the subsequent group forum provided a sense of inclusion and community. In addition, and similar to other authors, positive factors such as flexibility (Smedley, 2010), interactivity (Leszczynski et al., 2018), and self-pacing (Amer, 2007) were found. Whilst it is likely that online learning will be sustained and education will become more hybrid, it is also important to develop an understanding of the complexity of online learning within paramedic clinical education. The implementation of both synchronous and asynchronous online content offers a flexible, supportive learning environment despite the challenges faced within the Covid-19 era.
Online Learning in Medical Student Clerkship: A Survey of Student Perceptions and Future Directions

Abstract:Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a major impact on medical education with clerkship students abruptly removed from clinical activities in 2020 and hastily immersed in online learning to maintain medical education. In 2022, students returned to in-person clinical experiences, but synchronous learning sessions continued online with extensive use of asynchronous online resources. This change offers a unique opportunity to gather information about students' perspectives regarding the acceptability and effectiveness of online learning strategies. This study aims to explore the clerkship student experience with the integration of online learning and in-person learning into formalized educational sessions in clerkship. Methodology The authors administered an online survey to clerkship students at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Canada in spring 2022. The survey consisted of primarily Likert-style questions to explore the perceived effectiveness of various online learning strategies. Results are reported as the proportion selecting "quite effective" or "extremely effective." Results A total of 89 students responded to the survey (57.4% of graduating class). For synchronous online learning, case-based learning was perceived as the most effective teaching strategy (61.8%), and audience response systems were the most effective strategy for improving audience engagement (70.1%). For asynchronous online learning, interactive cases (84.9%) and student-developed online study guides (83.6%) were perceived as the most effective. Students held varying perceptions regarding how online learning impacted their well-being. When considering future clerkship curricula, the majority of clerkship students preferred a blend of in-person and online learning. Conclusions This study identified that most clerkship students prefer a hybrid of in-person and online learning and that ideal online learning curricula could include case-based learning, audience response systems, and a variety of asynchronous learning resources. These results can guide curriculum development and design at other medical institutions.

Abstract:Laboratory courses constituted a major challenge to remote learning, particularly with limited previous experience in virtual delivery. This case study aims to describe a model used for remote delivery of laboratory courses for students at Lebanese International University, School of Pharmacy, and to report student experiences, perceptions and attitudes through a structured questionnaire. Google Classroom was used as the learning platform, with synchronous and asynchronous teaching. Videos were used to simulate experiments; assignments, reports and quizzes were used for assessments. A total of 329 students responded to the questionnaire. The majority reported a good experience and satisfaction; 62% believed that simulation videos were of good quality, easy to access and were of reasonable length. Gaps detected were deficient practice (44%), lack of experience with instruments (46%), and poor motor skills (49%). Students expressed preference for experiments videotaped by their instructors. Overall, this model was well received, and provided an alternative to remotely deliver practical courses. This study assists in preparation of future remote laboratory learning activities.
Impact of Collaborative Testing on Academic Performance in Pharmacy Education

Abstract:Objective: To determine the impact of 2-stage collaborative testing (CT) on academic performance of pharmacy students and to characterize pharmacy student perceptions of CT. Methods: Two-stage CT was piloted in a 2-course patient assessment sequence within a Doctor of Pharmacy program. Students were randomly allocated into 2 groups and further divided into teams of 4 to 5 students. Student teams alternated taking section examinations in a traditional 1-stage (individual) and 2-stage CT (individual then team) format to establish an experimental design. Near the end of each semester, students individually took a post-test to facilitate assessment of CT on academic performance. A 12-item, anonymous survey instrument assessed student perceptions of 2-stage CT. The group differences in academic performance and survey responses were analyzed statistically. Results: There were 128 students enrolled in the course sequence, 123 of whom met the inclusion criteria for assessment of academic performance and 100 of whom completed the survey (response rate = 83%). Generally, students performed better on post-test items initially assessed through 2-stage CT (retention marker) and on post-test items that were answered incorrectly under 2-stage CT conditions (learning marker). Approximately 9 in 10 survey respondents preferred 2-stage CT over traditional 1-stage individual testing, with an equivalent proportion reporting it helped them learn from their mistakes and retain what they learned. There was high-level agreement among respondents that 2-stage CT improved their ability to work as a team and think critically. Conclusion: The implementation of 2-stage CT in a patient assessment course sequence was associated with improved learning and retention and was well-received by students.
