Abstract:Perovskite crystallization and morphology are two essential factors to the photoelectric performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A 3D metal-organic assembly [In-2(phen)(3)Cl-6]CH(3)CN2H(2)O (In2) is introduced for the first time into lead iodide precursor to modify the quality of a perovskite thin film through a two-step sequential deposition method. As a result, both the lead iodide and perovskite exhibit improved crystallization and modified morphology. The optimized film presents less trap states and is thus in favor of the charge transfer as well as charge collection. Consequently, open circuit voltage (V-oc) and fill factor obviously show enhancements from 0.99 to 1.04V and from 0.66 to 0.71, respectively, yielding a significant increase in a power conversion efficiency from 15.41% to 17.15%. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic property of In2 can increase the moisture resistance of the perovskite, which offers a simple and effective method to improve the stability of PSCs.

Abstract:CONSPECTUS: To tackle the foreseen energy crisis and serious environmental problem caused by conventional energy resources, solar cells, or photovoltaics (PV), a technology that can directly convert sunlight to electricity has been considered to be one of the most important and cost-effective clean energy techniques that benefit the environment. So far, silicon-based PVs have dominated the market due to mature fabrication techniques and their relatively good power conversion efficiency (PCE) and excellent stability. In the past decades, metal halide perovskite PVs have been a major direction of current PV research owing to their intriguing optoelectronic performance. The record PCE of perovskite PV cells has unprecedently increased from an original 3.8 to 25.5%. The typical structure of a photovoltaic perovskite is ABX(3), where A refers to a monovalent cation such as methylammonium (MA(+)), cesium (Cs+), or formamidinium (FA(+)); B refers to a divalent cation such as Pb2+ or Sn2+; and X refers to a halide anion. In general, a perovskite PV device consists of an active layer of the perovskite absorber, which is connected by a hole-transporting layer (HTL) and an electron-transporting layer (ETL). In the beginning, the strategies to improve the PCEs mainly focused on developing an effective method to grow a smooth and continuous polycrystalline film. After the improvement of the baseline PCE of the perovskite PVs, various techniques were employed to reduce the defects of perovskite formed at grain boundaries and surfaces, further pushing the PCEs of perovskite PV devices to over 20%. In the meantime, the discovery of suitable and low-cost interfacial materials such as electron-transporting materials and hole-transporting materials has appealed to the attention of the perovskite research community to accelerate the commercialization of the perovskite PVs. In this Account, we start from our efforts to develop facile and effective fabrication strategies to obtain smooth and continuous polycrystalline perovskite thin films, including vapor-assisted and moisture-assisted perovskite crystal growth. The strategies and the in-depth mechanisms of preventing the formation of specific detrimental defects accumulated at grain boundaries or the surface are also portrayed by designing various passivation molecules with certain functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, amine groups, or sulfonic groups. Some systematically designed electron- or hole-transporting materials to improve the charge extraction and collection efficiency in perovskite PV devices are discussed as well. Finally, future perspectives for further enhancing the long-term stability and PCE are proposed to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite PV devices in the next decade.

Abstract:Advanced crystal growth techniques enable the production of high‐quality perovskite single crystals with exceptional properties. These crystals exhibit tailored stoichiometry, crystal phases, and morphologies, facilitated by variations in halide composition. The absence of grain boundaries in perovskite single crystals significantly enhances their stability and reduces carrier trap density. This, in turn, leads to longer carrier diffusion lengths, making them ideal candidates for a wide range of multifunctional electronic applications. The perovskite halide structure serves as a crucial link between crystallization methods and device performance. By understanding the relationship between crystal growth techniques and the resulting material properties, researchers can continue to push the boundaries of energy conversion, light emission, and electronic device capabilities. Over a decade, researchers have depicted remarkable optoelectronic properties of halide‐based organic–inorganic perovskites and demonstrated impressive power conversion efficiency in photovoltaic applications, starting from 3.9% to 26.1%. The optoelectronic properties of halide‐based perovskites are significantly influenced by the crystal form and crystallization process. There are two common forms of halide‐based perovskites: polycrystalline films and single‐crystal. In polycrystalline thin films, multiple grain boundaries lead to ion migration, surface flaws, and instability, making them unsuitable for device applications. In contrast, single‐crystal halide‐based perovskites are stable and exhibit exceptional features like long carrier diffusion lengths and low trap density. Although research on polycrystalline halide‐based perovskite thin films is currently intense, investigations on single crystals are still in their early stages. This review article discusses single‐crystal perovskite halide growth methods and their use in optoelectronic devices, as crystal growth affects solar cells, light‐emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and other devices.

Abstract:Halide perovskite semiconductors with extraordinary optoelectronic properties have been fascinatedly studied. Halide perovskite nanocrystals, single crystals and thin films have been prepared for various fields, such as light emission, light detection and light harvesting. High performance device relies on high crystal quality determined by nucleation and crystal growth process. In this review, we give the fundamental understanding of crystallization process driven by supersaturation of the solution and summarize those methods for halide perovskite crystals. Supersaturation determines the proportion and the average Gibbs free energy changes for surface and volume molecular units involved in the spontaneous aggregations, which could be stable in the solution and induce homogeneous nucleation only when the solution exceeds a required minimum critical concentration (Cmin). Crystal growth and heterogeneous nucleation are thermodynamically easier than homogeneous nucleation due to the existent surfaces. Nanocrystals are mainly prepared via the nucleation‐dominated process by rapidly increasing the concentration over Cmin, single crystals are mainly prepared via the growth‐dominated process by keeping the concentration between solubility and Cmin, while thin films are mainly prepared by compromising the nucleation and growth processes to ensure compactness and grain sizes. The Role of Surface in Photovoltaic Perovskites: from Quantum Dots to Bulk Thin Films

For metal halide perovskites, understanding the surface features and their impact on the materials and devices is becoming increasingly important. At length scales down to the nanoscale regime, surface features become dominant in regulating the properties of perovskite materials owing to the high surface-to-volume ratio. For perovskite bulk films in the micrometer range, defects and structural disorder readily form at the surface and affect device performance. Through concerted efforts to optimize processing techniques, high-quality perovskite thin films can now be fabricated with monolayer-like polycrystalline grains or even single crystals. Surface defects, therefore, remain the major obstacle to progress, pushing surface studies to the forefront of perovskite research. Hence, research towards fundamental understanding of perovskite surfaces and how they can affect the materials properties is crucial to further improving the perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.In Chapter 2, surface energies will be shown to play an important role in affecting the phase stability of perovskite materials. Thermodynamic and crystallographic analyses revealed that enhanced contribution of the surface energy and lattice contraction contribute to the superior stability of colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). This approach provides a new route for achieving stable formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite solar cells. Later on, in Chapter 3, a conjugated small molecule ITIC was introduced into the FAPbI3 CQDs perovskite solar cells to further enhance the power conversion efficiency of the devices.In Chapter 4, I will show that in lead halide perovskites, how their “soft” nature renders them highly responsive to the external field, allowing for extended depth scale affected by the surface. By taking advantage of this unique feature of perovskites, I demonstrate a methodology for property manipulation of perovskite thin films based on secondary grain growth, where tuning of the surface induces the internal property evolution of the entire perovskite film. While in conventional microelectronic techniques secondary grain growth generally involves harsh conditions such as high temperature and straining, it is easily triggered in a perovskite thin film by a simple surface post-treatment, producing enlarged grain sizes of up to 4 μm. The resulting photovoltaic devices exhibit significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency and operational stability over a course of 1000 h and an ambient shelf stability of over 4000 h while maintaining over 90% of its original efficiency.Surface trap-mediated non-radiative charge recombination is a major limit to achieving high-efficiency metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics. The ionic character of perovskite lattice has enabled molecular defect passivation approaches via interaction between functional groups and defects. However, a lack of in-depth understanding of how the molecular configuration influence the passivation effectiveness is a challenge to rational molecule design. In Chapter 5, the chemical environment of a functional group that is activated for defect passivation was systematically investigated with theophylline, caffeine and theobromine. When N-H and C=O were in an optimal configuration within the molecule, hydrogen-bond formation between N-H and I assisted the primary C=O binding with the antisite Pb defect to maximize surface-defect binding. A stabilized power conversion efficiency of 22.6% of photovoltaic device was demonstrated with theophylline treatment.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cell (PVSC) has emerged as a game-changing photovoltaic technique in recent years. Remarkable advances have been realized in its efficiency, stability and large-scale fabrication techniques. High quality halide perovskite films are the core component of PVSCs, which require suitable fabrication strategies. This review includes three key sections to provide a comprehensive overview of these strategies. First, we discuss the crystallization reaction-controlled growth of halide perovskite films from the aspects of intermediates and reaction conditions. Second, organic and inorganic additives are introduced to show their influence on film formation, as well as the underlying mechanism. Third, mass transfer-controlled growth of perovskite films is reviewed, including ion transfer and molecule transfer. Finally, the review is concluded by summing up the key points covered and discussions have been made about the potential routes for further development of high-quality films fabrication strategies.

Abstract:Recently, organic-inorganic halide perovskites have sparked tremendous research interest because of their ground-breaking photovoltaic performance. The crystallization process and crystal shape of perovskites have striking impacts on their optoelectronic properties. Polycrystalline films and single crystals are two main forms of perovskites. Currently, perovskite thin films have been under intensive investigation while studies of perovskite single crystals are just in their infancy. This review article is concentrated upon the control of perovskite structures and growth, which are intimately correlated for improvements of not only solar cells but also light-emitting diodes, lasers, and photodetectors. We begin with the survey of the film formation process of perovskites including deposition methods and morphological optimization avenues. Strategies such as the use of additives, thermal annealing, solvent annealing, atmospheric control, and solvent engineering have been successfully employed to yield high-quality perovskite films. Next, we turn to summarize the shape evolution of perovskites single crystals from three-dimensional large sized single crystals, two-dimensional nanoplates, one-dimensional nanowires, to zero-dimensional quantum dots. Siginificant functions of perovskites single crystals are highlighted, which benefit fundamental studies of intrinsic photophysics. Then, the growth mechanisms of the previously mentioned perovskite crystals are unveiled. Lastly, perspectives for structure and growth control of perovskites are outlined towards high-performance (opto)electronic devices.

Abstract:The versatile strategies for post‐treating the surface of perovskite films toward morphology control, defect passivation, band alignment, and construction of heterostructures are discussed. The tailored surface properties are correlated with charge dynamics and performance of perovskite solar cells, which also provides a perspective elaborating future opportunities for further improving the efficiency and stability of this emerging photovoltaic technology. Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have witnessed a swift increase in power conversion efficiency in the past decade, emerging as one of the most promising next‐generation photovoltaic technologies for commercialization and low‐carbon energy generation. Through significant efforts in optimizing the processing techniques, high‐quality perovskite thin films can now be prepared with polycrystalline morphologies consisting of monolayer grains. Nevertheless, defects and microstructural disorders still form at the surface/heterointerface and in the bulk of the films. Post‐treatment of the as‐crystallized films has been intensively investigated for passivating these defects, being proved effective for improving the device performance. In this review, the versatile strategies for post‐treating the surface of perovskite thin films toward morphology control, defect passivation, and band alignment are discussed. The tailored surface properties are correlated to charge dynamics at interfaces and photovoltaic performance of PSCs. Since the perovskite heterostructures prepared by simple post‐treatments may suffer from degradation at high temperatures, the recent advances in preparing phase‐pure and stable perovskite heterostructures are also discussed. Finally, a perspective elaborating future opportunities for further enhancing the efficiency and stability of PSCs is provided.

Abstract:Manipulating crystallographic orientation of semiconductor crystals plays a vital role in fine-tuning their facet-dependent properties, such as surface properties, charge transfer properties, trap state density, and lattice strain. The success in crystal orientation engineering enables the preferential orientation growth of perovskite thin films with favorable crystal planes by precise nucleation manipulation and growth condition optimization, rendering the films with the unique optoelectronic properties to further boost the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the origin and impact of preferential crystallographic orientation of perovskite thin films on the corresponding photovoltaic performance of PSCs are still far behind being well understood. Herein, we explore the crystal orientation-dependent optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites and their influence on the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. We summarize the basic strategies for crystal facet engineering in the fabrication of preferentially oriented perovskite thin films, with a focus on the orientation growth mechanism during the thin film formation. Based on the knowledge above, a brief outlook on the remaining challenges and a perspective are provided based on the recent research progress in terms of crystal orientation engineering in PSCs.

Abstract:In the past two years, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells has significantly increased up to 20.1%. These state-of-the-art new devices surpass other third-generation solar cells to become the most promising rival to the silicon-based solar cells. Since the morphology of the perovskite film is one of the most crucial factors to affect the performance of the device, many approaches have been developed for its improvement. This review provides a systematical summary of the methods for morphology control. Introductions and discussions on the mechanisms and relevant hotspots are also given. Understanding the growth process of perovskite crystallites has great benefits for further efficiency improvement and enlightens us to exploit new technologies for large-scale, low-cost and high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Enhancing stability while maintaining high efficiency is among the primary challenges in the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a crystal growth technique assisted by in‐situ generated 2D perovskite phases has been developed to construct high quality 2D/3D perovskite films. The in‐situ generated 2D perovskite serve as templates for regulating the nucleation and oriented crystal growth in the α‐FAPbI3‐rich film. This led to a high film quality with much reduced trap density and an ultralong carrier lifetime. The obtained perovskite film shows excellent stability under extreme environment conditions (T = 200 °C, RH = 75 ± 5%). The corresponding PSC achieved an efficiency of 26.16% (certified 25.84%), along with excellent operational stability (T93 > 1300 hours, T = ∼50 °C) as well as outstanding high and low temperature cycle stability. New Low-Temperature Solution Processes to Control the Formation of Perovskite Films for Achieving High Performance Solar Cells

Abstract:New low-temperature processing schemes for controlling of perovskite film in the typical one-step and two-step approaches will be discussed in this work. For one-step method, we propose the scheme of vacuum assisted low-temperature annealing process to control the composition and morphology of triiodide (CH3NH3PbI3) film from 3CH(3)NH(3)I: PbCl2. Besides, the approach allows us to identify the critical role of the by-produced of CH3NH3Cl on the film formation and the device performance. As a result, perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) achieve good stability, reproducibility, PCE and no hysteresis. For two-step method, we propose the formation of PBI2 nanostructure together with strategically high ch(3)nh(3)i concentration to (1) form smooth CH3NH3PBI3 film on flat substrate without PbI2 residue at roomtemp, and (2) enhance photovoltaic performance and stability of planar-heterojunction PVSCS.

Abstract:Abstract In the last decade, laboratory-scale single-junction perovskite solar cells have achieved a remarkable power conversion efficiency exceeding 26.1%. However, the transition to industrial-scale production has unveiled a significant efficiency gap. The central challenge lies in the difficulty of achieving uniform, high-quality perovskite films on a large scale. To tackle this issue, various innovative strategies for manipulating crystallization have emerged in recent years. Based on an in-depth fundamental understanding of the nucleation and growth mechanisms in large-area perovskite films prepared through blade/slot-die coating methods, this review offers a critical examination of crystallization manipulation strategies for large-area perovskite solar modules. Lastly, we explore future avenues aimed at enhancing the efficiency and stability of large-area PSMs, thereby steering the field toward commercially viable applications.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite single crystals hold promise for photovoltaics with high efficiency and stability due to their superior optoelectronic properties and weak bulk ion migration. The past several years have witnessed rapid development of single‐crystal perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with efficiency rocketed from 6.5% to 24.3%, however, which still lags behind their polycrystalline counterparts. Moreover, the poor device stability under light illumination is contrary to the high ion migration barrier of perovskite single crystals. The key limiting factors should be the low crystalline quality and high surface defect density of solution‐grown thin single crystals. Under this circumstance, a review paper summarizing the recent progress and challenges will be instructive for future development of this emerging field. In this manuscript, the crystal engineering used to enhance carrier transport and suppress carrier recombination in vertical single‐crystal PSCs will be summarized initially, including crystal growth, component control, surface and interface modification. Subsequently, the application of perovskite single crystals in lateral single‐crystal PSCs will be discussed and compared with the conventionally vertical structure. Finally, the challenges and proposed strategies for the development of single‐crystal PSCs are provided.

Abstract:The past several years have witnessed the rapid emergence of a class of solar cells based on mixed organic–inorganic halide perovskites. Today’s state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) employ various methods to enhance nucleation and improve the smoothness of the perovskite films formed via solution processing. However, the lack of precise control over the crystallization process creates a risk of forming unwanted defects, for example, pinholes and grain boundaries. Here, we introduce an approach to prepare perovskite films of high electronic quality by using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as a template to control nucleation and crystal growth. We obtain shiny smooth perovskite films of excellent electronic quality, as manifested by a remarkably long photoluminescence lifetime. We realize stable PSCs with excellent reproducibility showing a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 21.6% and a certified PCE of 21.02% under standard AM 1.5G reporting conditions.

Abstract:Perovskite-structured organic-inorganic materials such as CH3NH3PbI3 are attracting much interest in the scientific community because of their abilities to function as revolutionary light harvesters and charge transfer materials for solar cells. To achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE), it is critical to optimize the perovskite film layer. This paper reports the temperature and concentration controls on the two-step solution process. A diffusion-controlled growth mechanism is proposed for this process in tuning the morphology and purity of the perovskite film, which are proven to be important factors contributing to the photovoltaic performance. The highest PCE of 11.92% is achieved with an optimized perovskite crystal size of similar to 150 nm and an appropriate amount of residual PbI2. This study sheds light on the design and fabrication of highly efficient, low-cost, solution-processed perovskite solar cells. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An in‐depth investigation of quasi‐2D Rudlesden–Popper perovskite film formation process and a successful strategy for its control is presented. The confined crystallization and phase reorganization by co‐additives in the quasi‐2D formamidinium‐based perovskite film facilitate the transition from a low‐n phase to a (111) oriented high‐n phase. The electron trap density in the layer is significantly reduced and the solar cell performance is boosted. The incorporation of large organic ammonium ions renders the crystallization dynamics and layer formation process of halide perovskites complex, difficult to control, and leads to problems of suppressed charge transport with the formation of tiny‐sized grains. In this paper, the use of methylammonium chloride (MACl) and an excess of PbI2 is introduced as a co‐additives in the precursor solution for the control of phenylmethylammonium or benzylammonium (PMA+ spacer) and formamidinium (FA+)‐based quasi‐2D PMA2FAn−1PbnI3n+1 (n = 5) perovskite layers formation. By this method, the morphology of the layer, the inner phase distribution, and the charge transport properties are improved. By employing glow discharge‐optical emission spectroscopy (GD‐OES) and other techniques, it is revealed that the quasi‐2D perovskites prepared in the presence of co‐additives exhibit uniform removal dynamics of the solvent across the film. Furthermore, the grain growth mode, upon thermal annealing, is lateral. It results in large, monolithic grains with low‐trap state density and excellent substrate coverage. Particularly, co‐additives improve the cations dispersion upon the crystallization process, thus suppressing the low‐n phase formed through the aggregation of spacer cations and accelerating the formation of the high‐n phase.

Abstract:Tin halide perovskites are promising candidates for lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) not only due to their low-toxicity, but also due to their ideal energy bandgap, high charge carrier mobility, and long hot carrier lifetime. The certified efficiency of tin halide PSCs has now reached over 10%, but this is still far from the theoretical expectation. Much of the efficiency gap relates to the poor quality of tin halide perovskite films due to the lack of in-depth understanding about the crystal nucleation and growth mechanisms for such films. This recognition motivates the present review, which is focused on the crystallization kinetics of tin halide perovskites. In particular, starting from a germane discussion on crystal nucleation and growth theories, several methods that have been used for controlling the rapid crystallization of tin halide perovskites are dissected. Finally, the current challenges and prospects for tin halide PSCs are presented. This comprehensive review summarizes and illuminates the parameter space for the optimization of tin halide perovskite film quality, promoting the future development of ecofriendly PSCs with high efficiency and high stability.

Abstract:High-quality perovskite films are predominantly prepared by anti-solvent assisted spin-coating method. However, small device size and narrow operation window limit their applications in practical and scalable production. Here, a spontaneously supersaturated nucleation strategy is developed to fabricate high-quality perovskite films without any antisolvents. The rapid precipitation behavior of the precursor solutions could be triggered by the volatilization of methylamine ethanol at the initial film formation stage, forming uniform and compact intermediate phase films. Mirror-like large area (10 cm x 10 cm) methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite films with micrometer-sized grains can be achieved by phase transition via annealing. The average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.4% is achieved for 0.1 cm(2) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The 1 cm(2) device shows a PCE of 17.57% and retains 96.8% after aging for 39 days in the air with a relative humidity of 5-30%. The perovskite module based on the perovskite films prepared by our strategy exhibits a PCE of 13.13%. The perovskite film fabrication method developed in this work shows high reproducibility of the fabrication process due to the spontaneous nucleation process. Meanwhile, it also exhibits significant potential in the application of scalable solution processing deposition techniques toward the commercialization of PSCs.
