Abstract:Abstract Introduction Poor sleep is a modifiable risk factor for multiple chronic disorders. Mindfulness-based therapies potentially improve sleep by enhancing awareness and acceptance of internal and external experiences, thus reducing pre-sleep hyper-arousal. In this pre-registered, randomized controlled trial, we tested the effect of mindfulness-based treatment for insomnia (MBTI) on subjective sleep quality measures (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire, PSQI) in the elderly. Methods Participants above 50 years old with sleep difficulties (PSQI ≥ 5) (mean (sd) age = 62.0 (6.35), 44 female) attended either an 8-week MBTI (N = 34) or sleep hygiene education and exercise program (SHEEP; N = 35). Before and after the interventions, we collected PSQI, insomnia symptoms and features measures (Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale, PSAS; Insomnia Severity Index, ISI; Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep, DBAS-30), mindfulness (Five-Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire, FFMQ), and mood and anxiety (Back Depression Inventory, BDI; State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, STAI). PSQI and PSAS (N = 26 to date) were collected at 6-month follow-up. Data were analysed with repeated-measures ANCOVA with group as a between-subject variable for the first 69 participants who completed the study. Results We observed significant improvement across both groups for sleep measures (PSQI: F1,67=36.442, p<.01; PSAS-Cognitive: F1,67=12.664, p<.01; ISI: F1,67=36.442, p<.0; DBAS: F1,67=28.749, p<.01) and mood (BDI: F1,67=26.393, p<.01; STAI-State: F1,67=4.608, p=.04; STAI-Trait: F1,67=7.687, p<.01), but not for Mindfulness (F1,67=2.256, p=.14) nor PSAS-somatic. No significant group by time interactions were found. We observed a correlation between PSQI decreases and FFMQ increases in MBTI (r=-.53, p<.01), but not in SHEEP (r=-.07, p=.70) participants. ANCOVA of 6-month PSQI data revealed a significant group by time interaction (F1,24=19.525, p=.03), with reduction from baseline in MBTI (t12=4.769, p<.01), but not in SHEEP group (t12=3.813, p=.08). Conclusion Preliminary results support MBTI as an accessible but effective behavioural intervention with potential long-term benefits for improving sleep and mood, and reducing cognitive-emotional arousal in the elderly. Abstract:Summary Older adults with poor sleep tend to show a discrepancy between objective and self‐reported sleep parameters, which can trigger a vicious cycle that worsens their sleep complaints. Cognitive‐behavioural therapy can reduce this discrepancy, but alternative behavioural therapies remain untested. The present exploratory study aimed to investigate the effects of mindfulness‐based therapy for insomnia (MBTI) on reducing sleep discrepancies in comparison with a sleep hygiene, education, and exercise programme (SHEEP). Older adults were randomly allocated into the mindfulness‐based therapy for insomnia group (n = 55) or the sleep hygiene, education, and exercise programme group (n = 58). Subjective and objective sleep parameters were measured using sleep diaries, polysomnography (PSG), and actigraphy. Sleep discrepancies were calculated using the Bland–Altman method for sleep onset latency (SOL) and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Additionally, correlations between the change in sleep discrepancies and the change in subjective sleep quality and trait mindfulness were measured within each group. Sleep onset latency discrepancy measured by polysomnography and actigraphy decreased significantly after the MBTI and SHEEP interventions. In contrast, there was no significant change in wake after sleep onset discrepancy in either group. The change in sleep onset latency discrepancy was correlated with the change in insomnia symptoms and objectively measured trait mindfulness. Mindfulness‐based therapy for insomnia was effective in reducing sleep onset latency discrepancies and improving sleep perception in older adults with sleep disturbances, which in turn drove an improvement in sleep quality and insomnia symptoms. Increases in trait mindfulness may have been an important mechanism in improving sleep perception in the mindfulness‐based therapy for insomnia group.

Abstract:Objective: Poor sleep is a modifiable risk factor for multiple disorders. Frontline treatments (e.g. cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia) have limitations, prompting a search for alternative approaches. Here, we compare manualized Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Insomnia (MBTI) with a Sleep Hygiene, Education, and Exercise Program (SHEEP) in improving subjective and objective sleep outcomes in older adults. Methods: We conducted a single-site, parallel-arm trial, with blinded assessments collected at baseline, post-intervention and 6-months follow-up. We randomized 127 participants aged 50-80, with a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score ⩾5, to either MBTI (n = 65) or SHEEP (n = 62), both 2 hr weekly group sessions lasting 8 weeks. Primary outcomes included PSQI and Insomnia Severity Index, and actigraphy- and polysomnography-measured sleep onset latency (SOL) and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Results: Intention-to-treat analysis showed reductions in insomnia severity in both groups [MBTI: Cohen's effect size d = -1.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.61 to -0.89; SHEEP: d = -0.69, 95% CI -0.96 to -0.43], with significantly greater improvement in MBTI. Sleep quality improved equivalently in both groups (MBTI: d = -1.19; SHEEP: d = -1.02). No significant interaction effects were observed in objective sleep measures. However, only MBTI had reduced WASOactigraphy (MBTI: d = -0.30; SHEEP: d = 0.02), SOLactigraphy (MBTI: d = -0.25; SHEEP: d = -0.09), and WASOPSG (MBTI: d = -0.26; SHEEP (d = -0.18). There was no change in SOLPSG. No participants withdrew because of adverse effects. Conclusions: MBTI is effective at improving subjective and objective sleep quality in older adults, and could be a valid alternative for persons who have failed or do not have access to standard frontline therapies.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Mindfulness-based treatment for insomnia (MBTI) is a viable intervention for improving poor sleep. We report preliminary data from an ongoing pre-registered, randomized controlled trial which investigates the effect of MBTI on elderly adults. Methods Participants above 50 years old with PSQI ≥ 5 were recruited and randomised into either MBTI or an active control group (Sleep hygiene education and exercise program, SHEEP) in sequential cohorts with about 20 participants per cohort (10 per group). Before and after the intervention, 1 night of portable polysomnography (PSG) and 1 week of actigraphy (ACT) and sleep diary (DIARY) data were collected. We report the ACT and DIARY results of the first 3 cohorts (n = 46, male = 23, mean age = 62.3, std = 6.3) and PSG data of the first 2 cohorts (n = 29, male = 12, mean age = 62.5, std = 5.7). Time in bed (TIB), total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep efficiency (SE) were analysed with mixed-model repeated-measures ANOVA. Results We observed increases in TIBDIARY (F1,44 = 5.151, p < .05) and SEDIARY (F1,44 = 22.633, p < .0001), and significant reductions in SOLDIARY (F1,44 = 7.031, p < .05) and WASODIARY (F1,39 = 7.411, p < .05). In the actigraphy data, we found a significant interaction in SOLACT (F1,39 = 4.273, p < .05) with an increase in SHEEP SOLACT (t18= 2.36, p < .05). Significant reductions were also observed in WASOACT (F1,44 = 16.459, p < .0001) Finally, we observed a reduction in SOLPSG (F1,26 = 5.037, p <. 05). All other tests were non-significant. Conclusion Preliminary results suggest that both interventions lead to improvements in sleep with more pronounced effects in subjective sleep reports. Objective sleep data suggest that improvements in sleep is a result of improved sleep quality and not simply extending sleep opportunity. These preliminary data shows that MBTI may be a promising intervention for elderly individuals with sleep difficulties. Abstract:INTRODUCTION:Insomnia is a prevalent and significant public health concern. Insomnia can lead to increased inflammatory markers associated with chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Studies suggest that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are more easily delivered within the community than cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) which was recommended as the preferred non-pharmacological treatment by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, are effective in insomnia treatment and can reduce inflammatory markers level in older individuals with insomnia. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of an MBI to CBT-I in young and middle-aged individuals with insomnia disorder and explore its effect on nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), a transcription factor that controls the expression of genes involved in inflammation.METHODS AND ANALYSIS:This report describes a protocol for a randomised controlled trial. Seventy eligible participants will be assigned to mindfulness-based joyful sleep or CBT-I for 2-hour sessions weekly for 8 weeks. The primary outcome is sleep quality assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, severity of insomnia symptoms assessed by the Insomnia Severity Index and sleep parameters recorded using sleep diary and polysomnography. Secondary outcomes include perceived stress, anxiety and depression. The exploratory outcome is serum level of NF-κB. Outcomes will be evaluated at baseline, the end of the ntervention period and at a 3 month follow-up. Data will be analysed using general linear models, specifically analysis of covariance and analysis of variance will be used.ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION:Full ethical approval for this study has been obtained from the Ethics Committee of the Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, China (2018-S236). Abstract:Abstract Introduction Insomnia is prevalent in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Current treatment options are limited due to the nature of cognitive impairment and a paucity of providers. We sought to determine the preliminary effects of a multicomponent behavioral sleep intervention (MBSI) compared to a sleep education control condition on sleep latency, wake after sleep onset, total sleep time and efficiency. Methods Participants were enrolled and randomized in a 1:1 ratio to intervention or control in this pilot randomized controlled trial. Inclusion criteria were: self-reported and diary based evidence of insomnia (latency ≥ 30 minutes or wake after sleep onset ≥ 60 minutes) and Modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status scores between 28-36. The intervention was delivered virtually via tablet and consisted of sleep hygiene education, meaningful activity in the daytime and relaxation therapy in the evening for 4 weeks. The active control received sleep hygiene education only. Data collection occurred at baseline and immediately post intervention. Sleep variables were averaged over one week at each time point from daily sleep diaries. We used non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis tests to compare intervention and control post-intervention. Results We screened 180 potential participants and enrolled 27 older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Our sample was balanced on all key variables, had a mean age of 65.63 ± 6.39, was primarily (81.5%) female, and mixed between white (51.9%), Black (44.4%). Retention rate was high at almost 90%. At baseline, average latency was 46.5 (27.3) minutes for control and 41.4 (33.10) for intervention group. Post intervention, average latency for control group was 47.0 (34.6) and 28.3 (31.8) for intervention (p=0.076) Standardized mean difference (SMD) was 0.56. Average efficiency for control group was 65% (11%) and 70% (12%) for intervention at baseline. Post intervention, efficiency was 68% (14%) for control group and 78% (12%) for intervention (p=0.044). SMD was 0.76. There were no significant differences between groups for wake after sleep onset or total sleep time. Conclusion Preliminary evidence supports testing MBSI on a larger scale to improve insomnia symptoms in older adults with mild cognitive impairment and to determine if these effects are sustained over time. A Randomized Controlled Trial of Mindfulness Meditation for Chronic Insomnia: Effects on Daytime Symptoms and Cognitive-Emotional Arousal

Abstract:Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been shown to improve sleep quality among people with insomnia. However, much less is known about the effects of MBIs on other aspects of insomnia such as daytime symptoms and cognitive-emotional arousal. The purpose of this study was to examine the treatment effects on these domains for adults with chronic insomnia disorder who were randomized to mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), mindfulness-based therapy for insomnia (MBTI), or a delayed-treatment control consisting of sleep diary self-monitoring (SM) followed by behavior therapy (BT). Analyses were conducted on baseline to post-treatment changes with superiority comparisons for each MBI to SM followed by non-inferiority comparisons for each MBI to BT. The results revealed significant reductions from baseline in the MBTI group with large effect sizes on sleep effort, maladaptive sleep-related cognitions, and hyperarousal which were superior to the SM control (p < 0.05) and non-inferior to BT (p < 0.025). MBSR demonstrated a significant increase in positive affect with a large effect size which was non-inferior to BT (p < 0.025) but not statistically significant compared to SM. These findings indicate that MBTI, a new MBI which combines mindfulness practices with behavioral sleep components, can be effective at reducing cognitive-emotional arousal related to insomnia while MBSR, a general MBI, can increase positive affect at a level similar to a standard behavioral treatment for insomnia.

Abstract:Abstract Sleep disturbances are common during the aging process and can result in a reduced quality of life. Many older people who experience sleep disturbances would consider turning to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) due to the limitations of traditional pharmaceutical or psychological and behavioural treatments. Mindfulness Meditation (MM) and Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) are two common forms of mind-body based CAM. The former focuses more on mind-based practices whereas the latter emphasizes predominantly on body or movement-based practices. An etiological model of sleep disturbance (Shallcross et al., 2019) can lay the groundwork for a better understanding of the mechanisms of MM and TCC in relation to sleep disturbances. This study aims at comparing the effects of MM and TCC with Sleep Hygiene Education (SHE) control group. A three-armed randomized controlled pilot trial was conducted involving 45 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 to 82 with symptoms of sleep disturbance. Moderate effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.7 and 0.56) were found for the primary outcome of insomnia severity at post-intervention as comparing MM and TCC groups with SHE control group, respectively. More specific, participants in the MM group showed more amelioration on mental health status, introspective awareness, and objective measure of EEG-based brain arousal level; whereas participants in the TCC group showed better improvement on physical health status and subjective measure of hyperarousal. Findings demonstrate the unique therapeutic effects of MM and TCC on improving sleep problem in older people. The application in a Chinese context will be discussed.

Abstract:Objectives To evaluate the impact of a mentoring program to encourage staff-delivered sleep-promoting strategies on sleep, function, depression, and anxiety among skilled nursing facility (SNF) residents. Design Modified stepped-wedge unit-level intervention. Setting and Participants Seventy-two residents (mean age 75 ± 15 years; 55.9% female, 41% non-Hispanic White, 35% Black, 20% Hispanic, 3% Asian) of 2 New York City urban SNFs. Methods Expert mentors provided SNF staff webinars, in-person workshops, and weekly sleep pearls via text messaging. Resident data were collected at baseline, post-intervention (V 1 ), and 3-month follow-up (V 2 ), including wrist actigraphy, resident behavioral observations, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) depression scale, Brief Anxiety and Depression Scale (BADS), Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool (BCAT), and select Minimum Data Set 3.0 (MDS 3.0) measures. Linear mixed models were fit for continuous outcomes and mixed-effects logistic models for binary outcomes. Outcomes were modeled as a function of time. Planned contrasts compared baseline to V 1 and V 2 . Results There was significant improvement in PSQI scores from baseline to V 1 ( P = .010), and from baseline to V 2 ( P = .007). Other significant changes between baseline and V 1 included decreased depression (PHQ-9) ( P = .027), increased daytime observed out of bed ( P ≤ .001), and increased daytime observed being awake ( P < .001). At V 2 (vs baseline) being observed out of bed decreased ( P < .001). Daytime sleeping by actigraphy increased from baseline to V 1 ( P = .005), but not V 2 . MDS 3.0 activities of daily living and pain showed improvements by the second quarter following implementation of SLUMBER ( P 's ≤ .022). There were no significant changes in BADS or BCAT between baseline and V 1 or V 2 . Conclusions and Implications SNF residents had improvements in sleep quality and depression with intervention, but improvements were not sustained at 3-month follow-up. The COVID-19 pandemic led to premature study termination, so full impacts remain unknown.

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives Mindfulness describes the ability to focus on the presence, including one’s thoughts and feelings. Trait mindfulness – a person’s inherent tendency to be mindful – has been connected to increased subjective sleep quality, but evidence from objective EEG-based sleep measures is lacking. Here, we investigate whether objective EEG-based sleep parameters explain interindividual differences in trait mindfulness. Methods Whole-night polysomnographic data were gathered from 52 healthy adults (27 females; agemean = 21.5 (SE = 0.28)) in their home using a portable high-density EEG-device. Trait mindfulness was assessed using the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire short form (FFMQ-SF). Results Trait mindfulness was positively correlated at trend-level with the percentage of REM, but not N1, N2 or SWS. Additionally, those exhibiting less REM beta/gamma power and NREM beta power displayed higher trait mindfulness and vice versa. Lastly, we replicated findings connecting higher trait mindfulness to better subjective sleep quality. Conclusions REM sleep is pivotal for emotional processing. Decreased REM high-frequency activity was suggested to reflect adrenergic reduction that defuses affective experiences. Increased NREM high-frequency activity is a marker for cognitive hyperarousal in insomnia. We speculate that differences in trait mindfulness might be explained by differences in REM- and NREM-sleep functions that promote ideal emotional regulation and prevent hyperarousal.

Abstract:Abstract Insomnia is a common major health concern, which causes significant distress and disruption in a person's life. The objective of this paper was to evaluate a 6-week version of Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Insomnia (MBTI) in a sample of people attending a sleep disorders clinic with insomnia, including those with comorbidities. Thirty participants who met the DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of insomnia participated in a 6-week group intervention. Outcome measures were a daily sleep diary and actigraphy during pre-treatment and follow-up, along with subjective sleep outcomes collected at baseline, end-of-treatment, and 3-month follow-up. Trend analyses showed that MBTI was associated with a large decrease in insomnia severity ( p < .001), with indications of maintenance of treatment effect. There were significant improvements in objective sleep parameters, including sleep onset latency ( p = .005), sleep efficiency ( p = .033), and wake after sleep onset ( p = .018). Significant improvements in subjective sleep parameters were also observed for sleep efficiency ( p = .005) and wake after sleep onset ( p < .001). Overall, this study indicated that MBTI can be successfully delivered in a sleep disorders clinic environment, with evidence of treatment effect for both objective and subjective measures of sleep.

Abstract:Background/Objective: Some older adults with insomnia experience sleep discrepancy, often characterized by greater subjective sleep difficulties and shorter subjective sleep duration than the estimates derived from objective measures. The present study examined whether a brief behavioral therapy for insomnia (BBTi) is efficacious for reducing sleep discrepancy in older adults.Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial of BBTi for community dwelling older adults with chronic insomnia (N = 62). Thirty-two participants received BBTi, delivered in four individual face-to-face sessions. Thirty received the self-monitoring control (SMC). They all completed daily sleep diaries and wore an actigraph from baseline to posttreatment, and for 2 weeks at 3-month follow-up. Sleep discrepancy was calculated by subtracting diary from actigraphy estimates of sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and total sleep time (TST). Mixed modeling was used to analyze data. SOL discrepancy decreased significantly in BBTi participants compared to SMC participants. The decreases in SOL discrepancy were explained by changes in diary-assessed SOL and subjective sleep quality but not changes in actigraphy-assessed SOL. Although WASO discrepancy and TST discrepancy decreased from baseline to posttreatment and follow-up, the Time by Group interaction effects were not significant indicating that BBTi participants did not experience greater reductions in WASO discrepancy and TST discrepancy than SMC participants. In conclusion, BBTi is efficacious for reducing SOL discrepancy in older adults with chronic insomnia.

Abstract:Context Health care providers (HCP) experience high stress and burnout rates. Mindfulness Based Interventions (MBI) with biofeedback may help improve resiliency but require further research. Design and Study Participants Aims were to evaluate changes in sleep patterns, nocturnal physiology, stress, mood disturbances, and perceived experience with biofeedback during the Mindfulness in Motion (MIM) intervention. Data from 66 HCP were included after removing those below 75% compliance with wearable sensors and wellness surveys. Participants were enrolled in MIM, including eight weekly one-hour virtually delivered synchronous group meetings and ∼10 minutes of mindfulness home practice at least 3 times per week using a mobile application. Participants wore wearable sensors to monitor sleep and nocturnal physiology and completed short daily stress and mood disturbances. Results According to mixed effect models, no sleep nor physiological metrics changed across MIM (p>0.05). More time was spent in bed after MIM sessions (8.33±1.03 hours) compared to night before (8.05±0.93 hours; p=0.040). Heart rate variability was lower nights after MIM (33.00±15.59 ms) compared to nights before (34.50±17.04 ms; p=0.004) but was not clinically meaningful (effect= 0.033). Significant reductions were noted in perceived stress at weeks 3 through 8 compared to Baseline and lower Total Mood Disturbance at weeks 3, 5, 6, and 8 compared to Baseline (p<0.001). Conclusions Participating in the MIM with mobile applications and wearable sensors reduced perceived stress and mood disturbances but did not induce physiological changes. Additional research is warranted to further evaluate objective physiological outcomes while controlling for confounding variables (e.g., alcohol, medications).

Abstract:Objective: Behavioral treatments for insomnia improve sleep in older adults, but research documenting their effects on cognitive performance is mixed. We explored whether a brief behavioral treatment for insomnia (BBTi) impacts daily associations between sleep parameters and next day cognition.Methods: Sixty-two older adults (Mage = 69.45 years, SD = 7.71) with insomnia completed either 4 weeks of BBTi or self-monitoring control (SMC). At baseline, post-treatment, and 3 month follow-up, participants completed 14 days of diaries measuring sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), total sleep time (TST), and sleep efficiency (SE), as well as daily cognitive tests measuring processing speed (i.e., symbol digit modalities test, SDMT), and reasoning (i.e., letter series). At each time period, associations between sleep parameters and daily cognition, controlling for age, education, insomnia duration, use of sleep medications, and depression (i.e., Beck Depression Inventory–2nd Edition scores), were examined through multilevel modeling.Results: At post-treatment, we observed an interactive fixed effect of treatment condition (i.e., BBTi/SMC) and TST on daily SDMT and letter series performance. For BBTi, longer TST was associated with better letter series performance, and did not predict SDMT performance. For SMC, longer TST was associated with worse SDMT, and was not associated with letter series performance. Greater WASO (regardless of group) was associated with better SDMT performance at post-treatment. Associations were not maintained at follow-up.Conclusions: Sleep duration may play an important role in BBTi-related improvements in daily higher order cognition. Maintenance of these associations may be facilitated by booster sessions following post-treatment.Clinical Trial Identifier: NCT02967185

Abstract:Background Nearly 70% of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience sleep disturbances. Increasing physical activity in people with MS has been shown to produce a moderate improvement in sleep quality, and exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality in non-neurologically impaired adults. Objective The purpose of this pilot randomized controlled trial study was to examine the effect of two exercise interventions on sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in individuals with MS. Methods Twenty-eight individuals with relapsing–remitting or secondary progressive MS were randomized into one of two 12-week exercise interventions: a supervised, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (AE) program or an unsupervised, low-intensity walking and stretching (WS) program. Only individuals who were ≥ 70% compliant with the programs were included in analysis ( n = 12 AE; n = 10 WS). Results Both groups demonstrated a moderate improvement in sleep quality, although only the improvement by the WS group was statistically significant. Only the AE group demonstrated a significant improvement in daytime sleepiness. Change in sleep quality and daytime sleepiness was not correlated with disease severity or with change in cardiovascular fitness, depression, or fatigue. Conclusion The mechanisms for improvement in sleep quality and daytime sleepiness need further investigation, but may be due to introduction of zeitgebers to improve circadian rhythm.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Differences between objectively and subjectively measured sleep can vary widely between participants and these differences may depend on individual characteristics, including mental health. The severity of mental health symptoms may be beneficial in assessing the magnitude of discrepancies between participants’ objective and subjective data. This secondary data analysis examined the predictivity of validated measures of post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms on differences between sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) and actigraphy with sleep diary data. Methods Adults in the community (N=80; Mage=32.65 years, 63% female, 88.8% White) completed the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology, and seven days of sleep assessment via sleep diaries, actigraphy, and EEG. The mean absolute value of differences between the sleep diary, actigraphy, and EEG data was calculated for total sleep time, time in bed (TIB), sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency (SOL), wakefulness after sleep onset, terminal wakefulness, and number of awakenings. Stepwise linear regression was used to examine whether the anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and depressive symptom scores were significant predictors of the objective-subjective differences between these sleep parameters. Results Depressive symptoms significantly predicted differences between EEG and sleep diary data for SOL, F(1,72)=9.958, p=.002, R2=0.121. Anxiety symptoms significantly predicted differences between actigraphy and sleep diary data for SOL, F(1,69)=6.335, p=.014, R2=0.084. Anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms significantly predicted differences between actigraphy and sleep diary data for TIB, F(2,70)=10.355, p<.001, R2=.228, βQIDS=0.62, βPCL=-.42. Conclusion Anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and depressive symptoms significantly predicted EEG and actigraphy objective-subjective differences for SOL and TIB. To better assess whether these variations are due to measurement type or if there are individual characteristics responsible for the discrepancies (i.e., sleep state misperception, symptom of mental health), a larger sample with more longitudinal data is needed. Additionally, future studies may focus on clinical samples. For instance, SOL and TIB variations may be indicative of mental health concerns (i.e., hyperarousal, anxiety, depression).
