Abstract:Solar eruptions such as flares and coronal mass ejections could cause disastrous space weather. To understand and predict these eruptive activities, we have to combine multi-wavelength observations and numerical simulations. Recently, data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations have provided a series of new findings in studying the accumulation of electric current and magnetic energy in active regions, in explaining magnetic flux rope eruptions and coronal mass ejections. We briefly review the progress in this field and introduce one way to realize data-driven MHD simulation, including processing magnetic field observational data, inversion of velocity field and electric field, models as initial conditions and subsequent dynamic simulations. Finally, we will look into the future of the data-driven simulations and point out several methods to improve the simulation results.

Abstract:The solar coronal magnetic field is a pivotal element in the study of eruptive phenomena, and understanding its dynamic evolution has long been a focal point in solar physics. Numerical models, driven directly by observation data, serve as indispensable tools in investigating the dynamics of the coronal magnetic field. This paper presents a new approach to electric field inversion, which involves modifying the electric field derived from the DAVE4VM velocity field using ideal Ohm's law. The time series of the modified electric field is used as a boundary condition to drive a MHD model, which is applied to simulate the magnetic field evolution of active region 12673. The simulation results demonstrate that our method enhances the magnetic energy injection through the bottom boundary, as compared with energy injection calculated directly from the DAVE4VM code, and reproduce of the evolution of the photospheric magnetic flux. The coronal magnetic field structure is also in morphological similarity to the coronal loops. This new approach will be applied to the high-accuracy simulation of eruption phenomena and provide more details on the dynamical evolution of the coronal magnetic field.

Abstract:For a better understanding of the magnetic field in the solar corona and dynamic activities such as flares and coronal mass ejections, it is crucial to measure the time-evolving coronal field and accurately estimate the magnetic energy. Recently, a new modeling technique called the data-driven coronal field model, in which the time evolution of magnetic field is driven by a sequence of photospheric magnetic and velocity field maps, has been developed and revealed the dynamics of flare-productive active regions. Here we report on the first qualitative and quantitative assessment of different data-driven models using a magnetic flux emergence simulation as a ground-truth (GT) data set. We compare the GT field with those reconstructed from the GT photospheric field by four data-driven algorithms. It is found that, at minimum, the flux rope structure is reproduced in all coronal field models. Quantitatively, however, the results show a certain degree of model dependence. In most cases, the magnetic energies and relative magnetic helicity are comparable to or at most twice of the GT values. The reproduced flux ropes have a sigmoidal shape (consistent with GT) of various sizes, a vertically standing magnetic torus, or a packed structure. The observed discrepancies can be attributed to the highly non-force-free input photospheric field, from which the coronal field is reconstructed, and to the modeling constraints such as the treatment of background atmosphere, the bottom boundary setting, and the spatial resolution.

Abstract:Solar eruptions are the leading driver of space weather, and it is vital for space weather forecast to understand in what conditions the solar eruptions can be produced and how they are initiated. The rotation of sunspots around their umbral center has long been considered as an important condition in causing solar eruptions. To unveil the underlying mechanisms, here we carried out a data-driven magnetohydrodynamics simulation for the event of a large sunspot with rotation for days in solar active region NOAA 12158 leading to a major eruption. The photospheric velocity as recovered from the time sequence of vector magnetograms are inputted directly at the bottom boundary of the numerical model as the driving flow. Our simulation successfully follows the long-term quasi-static evolution of the active region until the fast eruption, with magnetic field structure consistent with the observed coronal emission and onset time of simulated eruption matches rather well with the observations. Analysis of the process suggests that through the successive rotation of the sunspot the coronal magnetic field is sheared with a vertical current sheet created progressively, and once fast reconnection sets in at the current sheet, the eruption is instantly triggered, with a highly twisted flux rope originating from the eruption. This data-driven simulation stresses magnetic reconnection as the key mechanism in sunspot rotation leading to eruption.

Recent advances in solar data-driven MHD simulations of the formation and evolution of CME flux ropes

Abstract:Filament eruptions and coronal mass ejections are physical phenomena related to magnetic flux ropes carrying electric current. A magnetic flux rope is a key structure for solar eruptions, and when it carries a southward magnetic field component when propagating to the Earth. It is the primary driver of strong geomagnetic storms. As a result, developing a numerical model capable of capturing the entire progression of a flux rope, from its inception to its eruptive phase, is crucial for forecasting adverse space weather. The existence of such flux ropes is revealed by the presence of sigmoids in active regions or hot channels by observations from space and ground instruments. After proposing cartoons in 2D, potential, linear, non-linear-force-free-field (NLFFF) and non-force-free-field (NFFF) magnetic extrapolations, 3D numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation models were developed, first in a static configuration and later dynamic data-driven MHD models using high resolution observed vector magnetograms. This paper reviews a few recent developments in data-driven mode, such as the time-dependent magneto-frictional (TMF) and thermodynamic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models. Hereafter, to demonstrate the capacity of these models to reveal the physics of observations, we present the results for three events explored in our group: 1. the eruptive X1.0 flare on 28 October 2021; 2. the filament eruption on 18 August 2022; and 3. the confined X2.2 flare on 6 September 2017. These case studies validate the ability of data-driven models to retrieve observations, including the formation and eruption of flux ropes, 3D magnetic reconnection, CME three-part structures and the failed eruption. Based on these results, we provide some arguments for the formation mechanisms of flux ropes, the physical nature of the CME leading front, and the constraints of failed eruptions.

Abstract:Solar flares and plasma eruptions are sudden releases of magnetic energy stored in the plasma atmosphere. To understand the physical mechanisms governing their occurrences, three-dimensional magnetic fields from the photosphere up to the corona must be studied. The solar photospheric magnetic fields are observable, whereas the coronal magnetic fields cannot be measured. One method for inferring coronal magnetic fields is performing data-driven simulations, which involves time-series observational data of the photospheric magnetic fields with the bottom boundary of magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We developed a data-driven method in which temporal evolutions of the observational vector magnetic field can be reproduced at the bottom boundary in the simulation by introducing an inverted velocity field. This velocity field is obtained by inversely solving the induction equation and applying an appropriate gauge transformation. Using this method, we performed a data-driven simulation of successive small eruptions observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Solar Magnetic Activity Telescope in November 2017. The simulation well reproduced the converging motion between opposite-polarity magnetic patches, demonstrating successive formation and eruptions of helical flux ropes.

Abstract:The topology and dynamics of the three-dimensional magnetic field in the solar atmosphere govern various solar eruptive phenomena and activities, such as flares, coronal mass ejections, and filaments/prominences. We have to observe and model the vector magnetic field to understand the structures and physical mechanisms of these solar activities. Vector magnetic fields on the photosphere are routinely observed via the polarized light, and inferred with the inversion of Stokes profiles. To analyze these vector magnetic fields, we need first to remove the 180$^\circ$ ambiguity of the transverse components and correct the projection effect. Then, the vector magnetic field can be served as the boundary conditions for a force-free field modeling after a proper preprocessing. The photospheric velocity field can also be derived from a time sequence of vector magnetic fields. Three-dimensional magnetic field could be derived and studied with theoretical force-free field models, numerical nonlinear force-free field models, magnetohydrostatic models, and magnetohydrodynamic models. Magnetic energy can be computed with three-dimensional magnetic field models or a time series of vector magnetic field. The magnetic topology is analyzed by pinpointing the positions of magnetic null points, bald patches, and quasi-separatrix layers. As a well conserved physical quantity, magnetic helicity can be computed with various methods, such as the finite volume method, discrete flux tube method, and helicity flux integration method. This quantity serves as a promising parameter characterizing the activity level of solar active regions.

Abstract:Solar energetic events are caused by the release of magnetic energy accumulated in the solar atmosphere. To understand their initiating physical mechanisms, the dynamics of the coronal magnetic fields must be studied. Unfortunately, the dominant mechanisms are still unclear due to a lack of direct measurements. Numerical simulations based on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) can reproduce the dynamical evolution of solar coronal magnetic field, providing a useful tool to explore flare initiation. Data-driven MHD simulations, in which the time-series observational data of the photospheric magnetic field is used as the simulation boundary condition, can explore different mechanisms. To investigate the accumulation of free magnetic energy through a solar eruption, we simulated the first of several large flares in NOAA active region 11283. We used a data-driven model that was governed by zero-beta MHD, focusing on the free magnetic energy accumulation prior to the M5.3 flare (2011 September 6 at 01:59 UT). We reproduced the flare-associated eruption following the formation of twisted magnetic fields, or a magnetic flux rope (MFR), formed by photospheric motions at its footpoints. We found that the eruption was first triggered by the growth of the torus instability. The erupting MFR caused magnetic reconnections with neighboring magnetic field lines located along the direction of the eruption. Using the simulation results and an axial-radial decay index centered on the MFR, we find a natural explanation for the inclination of the eruption and a possible approach to predict the direction of solar eruptive events.

Abstract:Magnetic flux ropes are a bundle of twisted magnetic field lines produced by internal electric currents, which are responsible for solar eruptions and are the major drivers of geomagnetic storms. As such, it is crucial to develop a numerical model that can capture the entire evolution of a flux rope, from its birth to death, in order to predict whether adverse space weather events might occur or not. In this paper, we develop a data-driven modeling that combines a time-dependent magnetofrictional approach with a thermodynamic magnetohydrodynamic model. Our numerical modeling successfully reproduces the formation and confined eruption of an observed flux rope, and unveils the physical details behind the observations. Regarding the long-term evolution of the active region, our simulation results indicate that the flux cancellation due to collisional shearing plays a critical role in the formation of the flux rope, corresponding to a substantial increase in magnetic free energy and helicity. Regarding the eruption stage, the deformation of the flux rope during its eruption can cause an increase in the downward tension force, which suppresses it from further rising. This finding may shed light on why some torus-unstable flux ropes lead to failed eruptions after large-angle rotations. Moreover, we find that twisted fluxes can accumulate during confined eruptions, which would breed the subsequent eruptive flares.

Abstract:This paper reviews the studies of solar photospheric magnetic field evolution in active regions and its relationship to solar flares. It is divided into two topics, the magnetic structure and evolution leading to solar eruptions and the rapid changes of photospheric magnetic field associated with eruptions. For the first topic, we describe the magnetic complexity, new flux emergence, flux cancellation, shear motions, sunspot rotation, and magnetic helicity injection, which may all contribute to the storage and buildup of energy and triggering of solar eruptions. For the second topic, we concentrate on the observations of rapid and irreversible changes of photospheric magnetic field associated with flares, and the implication on the restructuring of three-dimensional magnetic field. In particular, we emphasize the recent advances in observations of photospheric magnetic field, as state-of-the-art observing facilities (such as Hinode and Solar Dynamic Observatory) become available. The linkage between observations and theories and future prospectives in this research area are also discussed.

Abstract:Solar eruptions are explosive release of coronal magnetic field energy as manifested in solar flares and coronal mass ejection. Observations have shown that the core of eruption-productive regions are often a sheared magnetic arcade, i.e., a single bipolar configuration, and, particularly, the corresponding magnetic polarities at the photosphere are elongated along a strong-gradient polarity inversion line (PIL). It remains unclear what mechanism triggers the eruption in a single bipolar field and why the one with a strong PIL is eruption-productive. Recently, using high accuracy simulations, we have established a fundamental mechanism of solar eruption initiation that a bipolar field as driven by quasi-static shearing motion at the photosphere can form an internal current sheet, and then fast magnetic reconnection triggers and drives the eruption. Here we investigate the behavior of the fundamental mechanism with different photospheric magnetic flux distributions, i.e., magnetograms, by combining theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Our study shows that the bipolar fields of different magnetograms, as sheared continually, all exhibit similar evolutions from the slow storage to fast release of magnetic energy in accordance with the fundamental mechanism, which demonstrates the robustness of the mechanism. We further found that the magnetograms with stronger PIL produce larger eruptions, and the key reason is that the sheared bipolar fields with stronger PIL can achieve more non-potentiality, and their internal current sheet can form at a lower height and with a larger current density, by which the reconnection can be more efficient. This also provides a viable trigger mechanism for the observed eruptions in active region with strong PIL.

Abstract:Different solar atmospheric layers are connected by the magnetic field of the Sun, which is the primary source for various types of solar activity. The magnetic activity of the Sun has a significant impact on the solar-terrestrial environment and human life. Understanding the phenomena occurring in the solar atmosphere relies on a thorough understanding of the solar magnetic field. However, up to now, only the magnetic field at the photospheric level can be measured with precision on a daily basis. No routine measurements have been carried out for the magnetic field in the upper layers of the solar atmosphere, particularly the solar corona. The lack of coronal magnetic field measurements has limited our investigation of many important topics in solar physics research including the driving mechanism of solar eruptions and the heating process of corona. In the past several decades, a number of techniques that may be useful for coronal magnetic field diagnostics have been developed, such as the techniques based on infrared spectro-polarimetry of coronal lines, the diagnosis utilizing coronal radio observations, magneto-seismology using observations of coronal magnetohydrodynamics waves and the measurements based on the magnetic-field-induced transition of coronal extreme ultraviolet spectral lines. Meanwhile, a few attempts have been made to measure the coronal magnetic field based on these techniques. This review summarizes the physical principles and important progress of coronal magnetic field measurements, and discuss future perspectives on related research.
First Insights into the Applicability and Importance of Different 3D Magnetic Field Extrapolation Approaches for Studying the Preeruptive Conditions of Solar Active Regions

Abstract:The three-dimensional (3D) coronal magnetic field has not yet been directly observed. However, for a better understanding and prediction of magnetically driven solar eruptions, 3D models of solar active regions are required. This work aims to provide insight into the significance of different extrapolation models for analyzing the preeruptive conditions of active regions with morphological parameters in 3D. Here, we employed potential field (PF), linear force-free field (LFFF), and nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) models and a neural network-based method integrating observational data and NLFFF physics (NF2). The 3D coronal magnetic field structure of a "flaring" (AR11166) and "flare-quiet" (AR12645) active region, in terms of their flare productivity, is constructed via the four extrapolation methods. To analyze the evolution of the field, six prediction parameters were employed throughout, from the photosphere up to the base of the lower corona. First, we find that the evolution of the adopted morphological parameters exhibits similarity across the investigated time period when considering the four types of extrapolations. Second, all the parameters exhibited preeruptive conditions not only at the photosphere but also at higher altitudes in the case of active region (AR) 11166, while three out of the six proxies also exhibited preeruptive conditions in the case of AR12645. We conclude that: (i) the combined application of several different precursor parameters is important in the lower solar atmosphere to improve eruption predictions, and (ii) to gain a quick yet reliable insight into the preflare evolution of active regions in 3D, the PF and LFFF are acceptable; however, the NF2 method is likely the more suitable option.

Testing a Data-driven Active Region Evolution Model with Boundary Data at Different Heights from a Solar Magnetic Flux Emergence Simulation

Abstract:A data-driven active region evolution (DARE) model has been developed to study the complex structures and dynamics of solar coronal magnetic fields. The model is configured with typical coronal environment of tenuous gas governed by strong magnetic field, and thus its lower boundary is set at the base of the corona, but driven by magnetic fields observed in the photosphere. A previous assessment of the model using data from a flux emergence simulation (FES) showed that the DARE failed to reproduce the coronal magnetic field in the FES, which is attributed to the fact that the photospheric data in the FES has a very strong Lorentz force and therefore spurious flows are generated in the DARE model. Here we further test the DARE by using three sets of data from the FES sliced at incremental heights, which correspond to the photosphere, the chromosphere and the base of the corona. It is found that the key difference in the three sets of data is the extent of the Lorentz force, which makes the data-driven model perform very differently. At the two higher levels above the photosphere, the Lorentz force decreases substantially, and the DARE model attains results in much better agreement with the FES, confirming that the Lorentz force in the boundary data is a key issue affecting the results of the DARE model. However, unlike the FES data, the photospheric field from SDO/HMI observations has recently been found to be very close to force-free. Therefore, we suggest that it is still reasonable to use the photospheric magnetic field as approximation of the field at the coronal base to drive the DARE model.

Thermodynamic and Magnetic Topology Evolution of the X1.0 Flare on 2021 October 28 Simulated by a Data-driven Radiative Magnetohydrodynamic Model

Abstract:Solar filament eruptions, flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are manifestations of drastic release of energy in the magnetic field, which are related to many eruptive phenomena from the Earth magnetosphere to black hole accretion disks. With the availability of high-resolution magnetograms on the solar surface, observational data-based modelling is a promising way to quantitatively study the underlying physical mechanisms behind observations. By incorporating thermal conduction and radiation losses in the energy equation, we develop a new data-driven radiative magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, which has the capability to capture the thermodynamic evolution compared to our previous zero-\b{eta} model. Our numerical results reproduce major observational characteristics of the X1.0 flare on 2021 October 28 in NOAA active region (AR) 12887, including the morphology of the eruption, kinematic of flare ribbons, extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) radiations, and two components of the EUV waves predicted by the magnetic stretching model, i.e., a fast-mode shock wave and a slower apparent wave due to successive stretching of magnetic field lines. Moreover, some intriguing phenomena are revealed in the simulation. We find that flare ribbons separate initially and ultimately stop at the outer stationary quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs). Such outer QSLs correspond to the border of the filament channel and determine the final positions of flare ribbons, which can be used to predict the size and the lifetime of a flare before it occurs. In addition, the side view of the synthesized EUV and white-light images exhibit typical three-part structures of CMEs, where the bright leading front is roughly cospatial with the non-wave component of the EUV wave, reinforcing the magnetic stretching model for the slow component of EUV waves.

Modelling 3D magnetic networks in a realistic solar atmosphere

Abstract:The magnetic network extending from the photosphere (solar radius $\simeq R_\odot$) to lower corona ($R_\odot + 10$ Mm) plays an important role in the heating mechanisms of the solar atmosphere. Here we further develop the models with realistic open magnetic flux tubes of the authors in order to model more complicated configurations. Closed magnetic loops, and combinations of closed and open magnetic flux tubes are modelled. These are embedded within a stratified atmosphere, derived from observationally motivated semi-empirical and data-driven models subject to solar gravity and capable of spanning from the photosphere up into the chromosphere and lower corona. Constructing a magnetic field comprising self-similar magnetic flux tubes, an analytic solution for the kinetic pressure and plasma density is derived. Combining flux tubes of opposite polarity it is possible to create a steady background magnetic field configuration modelling a solar atmosphere exhibiting realistic stratification. The result can be applied to SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI and other magnetograms from the solar surface, upon which photospheric motions can be simulated to explore the mechanism of energy transport. We demonstrate this powerful and versatile method with an application to Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager data.

Abstract:We present a boundary data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of the 2011 February 15 coronal mass ejection (CME) event of Active Region NOAA 11158. The simulation is driven at the lower boundary with an electric field derived from the normal magnetic field and the vertical electric current measured from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) Helioseismic Magnetic Imager vector magnetograms. The simulation shows the buildup of a pre-eruption coronal magnetic field that is close to the nonlinear force-free field extrapolation, and it subsequently develops multiple eruptions. The sheared/twisted field lines of the pre-eruption magnetic field show qualitative agreement with the brightening loops in the SDO Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) hot passband images. We find that the eruption is initiated by the tether-cutting reconnection in a highly sheared field above the central polarity inversion line and a magnetic flux rope with dipped field lines forms during the eruption. The modeled erupting magnetic field evolves to develop a complex structure containing two distinct flux ropes and produces an outgoing double-shell feature consistent with the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory B/Extreme UltraViolet Imager observation of the CME. The foot points of the erupting field lines are found to correspond well with the dimming regions seen in the SDO/AIA observation of the event. These agreements suggest that the derived electric field is a promising way to drive MHD simulations to establish the realistic pre-eruption coronal field based on the observed vertical electric current and model its subsequent dynamic eruption.

Data-driven simulations of magnetic field evolution in Active Region 11429: Magneto-friction method using PENCIL code

Abstract:Coronal magnetic fields evolve quasi statically over long time scales and dynamically over short time scales. As of now there exists no regular measurements of coronal magnetic fields, and therefore generating the coronal magnetic field evolution using the observations of the magnetic field at the photosphere is of fundamental requirement to understand the origin of the transient phenomena from the solar active regions. Using the magnetofriction (MF) approach, we aim to simulate the coronal field evolution in the solar active region 11429. The MF method is implemented in open source \PC along with a driver module to drive the initial field with different boundary conditions prescribed from observed vector magnetic fields at the photosphere. In order to work with vector potential and the observations, we prescribe three types of bottom boundary drivers with varying free-magnetic energy. The MF simulation reproduces the magnetic structure, which better matches to the sigmoidal morphology exhibited by AIA images at the pre-eruptive time. We found that the already sheared field further driven by the sheared magnetic field, will maintain and further build the highly sheared coronal magnetic configuration, as seen in AR 11429. Data-driven MF simulation is a viable tool to generate the coronal magnetic field evolution, capturing the formation of the twisted flux rope and its eruption.

Abstract:Context. Data-driven, time-dependent magnetofrictional modeling has proved to be an efficient tool for studying the pre-eruptive build-up of energy for solar eruptions, and sometimes even the ejection of coronal flux ropes during eruptions. However, previous modeling works have illustrated the sensitivity of the results on the data-driven boundary condition, as well as the difficulty in modeling the ejections with proper time scales. Aims. We aim to study the pre- and post-eruptive evolution of a weak coronal mass ejection producing eruption at the periphery of isolated NOAA active region (AR) 11726 using a data-driven, time-dependent magnetofrictional simulation, and aim to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of our simulation approach. Methods. We used state-of-the-art data processing and electric field inversion methods to provide the data-driven boundary condition for the simulation. We analyzed the field-line evolution, magnetic connectivity, twist, as well as the energy and helicity budgets in the simulation to study the pre- and post-eruptive magnetic field evolution of the observed eruption from AR11726. Results. We find the simulation to produce a pre-eruptive flux rope system consistent with several features in the extreme ultraviolet and X-ray observations of the eruption, but the simulation largely fails to reproduce the ejection of the flux rope. We find the flux rope formation to be likely driven by the photospheric vorticity at one of the footpoints, although reconnection at a coronal null-point may also feed poloidal flux to the flux rope. The accurate determination of the non-inductive (curl-free) component of the photospheric electric field boundary condition is found to be essential for producing the flux rope in the simulation. Conclusions. Our results illustrate the applicability of the data-driven, time-dependent magnetofrictional simulations in modeling the pre-eruptive evolution and formation process of a flux rope system, but they indicate that the modeling output becomes problematic for the post-eruptive times. For the studied event, the flux rope also constituted only a small part of the related active region.
