Abstract:Li metal has been considered an ideal anode in lithium batteries due to its high theoretical capacity of 3860 mAh·g−1 and lowest negative reduction potential of −3.040 V among the standard hydrogen electrodes. However, lithium dendrites can easily grow on the surface of the negative electrode during charging, which results in a short circuit of the battery and reduces its efficiency. This paper investigated dendrite growth and inhibition mechanisms in lithium metal batteries to improve battery life. The impacts of the initial nucleation spacing, surface energy anisotropy strength, and interfacial electrochemical driving force on lithium dendrite growth were analyzed with electrochemical experiments and mathematical models. The results showed that the smaller nucleation spacing inhibits the growth of dendrite side branches and reduces the roughness of lithium metal deposition on the negative electrode. A lower interfacial energy anisotropy strength can slow down the growth of dendrite tips and improve the dendrite growth structure. The growth of the dendrites is influenced by the interfacial electrochemical driving force. Reducing the nucleation overpotential can effectively inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites.

Abstract:Next generation batteries based on lithium (Li) metal anodes have been plagued by the dendritic electrodeposition of Li metal on the anode during cycling, resulting in short circuit and capacity loss. Suppression of dendritic growth through the use of solid electrolytes has emerged as one of the most promising strategies for enabling the use of Li metal anodes. We perform a computational screening of over 12 000 inorganic solids based on their ability to suppress dendrite initiation in contact with Li metal anode. Properties for mechanically isotropic and anisotropic interfaces that can be used in stability criteria for determining the propensity of dendrite initiation are usually obtained from computationally expensive first-principles methods. In order to obtain a large data set for screening, we use machine-learning models to predict the mechanical properties of several new solid electrolytes. The machine-learning models are trained on purely structural features of the material, which do not require any first-principles calculations. We train a graph convolutional neural network on the shear and bulk moduli because of the availability of a large training data set with low noise due to low uncertainty in their first-principles-calculated values. We use gradient boosting regressor and kernel ridge regression to train the elastic constants, where the choice of the model depends on the size of the training data and the noise that it can handle. The material stiffness is found to increase with an increase in mass density and ratio of Li and sublattice bond ionicity, and decrease with increase in volume per atom and sublattice electronegativity. Cross-validation/test performance suggests our models generalize well. We predict over 20 mechanically anisotropic interfaces between Li metal and four solid electrolytes which can be used to suppress dendrite growth. Our screened candidates are generally soft and highly anisotropic, and present opportunities for simultaneously obtaining dendrite suppression and high ionic conductivity in solid electrolytes.

Abstract:Lithium metal-based batteries offer promising prospects as alternatives to today's lithium-ion batteries, due to their ultra-high energy density. Unfortunately, the application of lithium metal is full of challenges and has puzzled researchers for more than 40 years. In this feature article, we describe the history of the development of lithium metal batteries and their existing key challenges, which include non-uniform electrodeposition, volume expansion, high reactivity of the lithium metal/unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and the shuttling of active cathode materials. Then, we focus on the growth mechanisms of uneven lithium electrodeposition and extend the discussion to the approaches to inhibit lithium dendrites. Finally, we discuss future directions that are expected to drive progress in the development of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The lithium metal anode represents an excellent choice of material for rechargeable batteries, while lithium dendrites growth has adverse effects on the manufacturing and performance of batteries because the lithium ions deposit unevenly on the electrode surface during the electrochemical process, which can lead to short circuits and safety issues within the battery. This work studied the morphology of lithium dendrites under two initial conditions: initial nuclei and smooth planar interface. By introducing the noise to the order parameter and concentration ratio, the model is able to simulate mossy dendrites, which is highly influenced by the nonuniformity of deposition and the charging conditions. Through the investigation of the fluctuations in lithium-ion concentration near the metal/electrolyte interface, it is found that with increased applied voltage, branches of the second order appeared orthogonal to the direction of growth. The simulation results reported in this work can shed light on the foundational principles of lithium dendritic growth and offer a regulation strategy for inhibition of lithium dendrite growth.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries are one of the most promising next-generation high-energy–density storage devices. However, the continuous growth of lithium dendrites could cause internal short circuits, capacity attenuation, and even thermal runaway of the solid-state lithium metal batteries. Though there are some studies on lithium dendrites, the growth mechanism is not yet clear because of a nonlinear system involving many reactions. Here, we propose a chemical–mechanical coupling phase-field model of lithium dendrite growth within solid electrolyte, taking into account not only the electrochemical reaction for dendrite growth, but also the interaction between dendrite and solid electrolyte. This model exhibits the evolutions of the morphology and stress distribution for single and multiple lithium dendrites and the influences of mechanical strength, anisotropic strength, electrode conductivity, and interface mobility coefficient on the lithium dendrite growth. The results show that higher mechanical strength, anisotropic strength, interfacial mobility coefficient, and lower electrical conductivity can inhibit dendrite growth. The mechanical strength and anisotropic strength have a significant effect on the dendrite morphology and stress distribution. In addition, although the secondary growth of multiple dendrites is inhibited, the overall stress is higher than that of single dendrite, which could cause greater solid electrolyte damage. This research can provide theoretical guidance for revealing the fracture mechanism of solid electrolytes and improving the optimal design of solid electrolyte materials.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal, which has the advantages of high theoretical capacity, low redox potential, and low density, is considered an ideal anode material for next-generation battery systems. However, the dendritic morphology of Li-metal electrodeposition during the charging process remains challenging because it results in active Li depletion, poor cycling performance, and safety issues. Herein, the effect of surface topography on dendrite growth was quantitatively revealed by an electro-chemo-mechanical phase-field model. The surface topography of the Li-metal battery was measured and quantified using the arithmetic mean roughness (Ra), root mean square roughness (Rq), impulse factor (Rp), skewness, and kurtosis. The simulation results revealed that the arithmetic mean height of the bare electrode and the height of the highest tip compared to the average height were highly correlated with dendrite growth. It was also demonstrated that controlling the surface topography, applied voltage, and external pressure can effectively suppress dendritic growth. Furthermore, the exposed surface of the electrode generated by the size difference or misalignment of the electrodes induced considerable dendrite growth. We believe that our quantitative analysis provides guidance for processing the surface roughness of practical Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:Dendrite free electrodeposition of lithium metal is necessary for the adoption of high energy density rechargeable lithium metal batteries. Here, we demonstrate a new mechanism of using a liquid crystalline electrolyte to suppress dendrite growth with a lithium metal anode. A nematic liquid crystalline electrolyte modifies the kinetics of electrodeposition by introducing additional overpotential due to its bulk distortion and anchoring free energy. By extending the phase-field model, we simulate the morphological evolution of the metal anode and explore the role of bulk distortion and anchoring strengths on the electrodeposition process. We find that adsorption energy of liquid crystalline molecules on lithium surface can be a good descriptor for the anchoring energy and obtain it using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Unlike other extrinsic mechanisms, we find that liquid crystals with high anchoring strengths can ensure smooth electrodeposition of lithium metal, thus paving the way for practical applications in rechargeable batteries based on metal anodes.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is considered as the candidate for the next generation of Li metal battery (LMB) anodes due to its high capacity and the lowest potential, which is expected to meet the requirements of energy storage devices. Unfortunately, the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites during the charge/discharge process, as well as the resulting problems of poor cycling stability, low coulomb efficiency and safety risk, has restricted the commercialization of Li anode. Herein, an in-situ interfacial film containing three-dimensional (3D) rod-like micron-structure silver (Ag) is constructed on the surface of the Li metal. Due to the 3D rod-like micron-structure used to homogenize the distribution of current density, achieving uniform nucleation and growth of electrodeposited Li, the produced Li-Ag alloy was employed to restrain the formation of “dead” Li and the in-situ formed LiNO3 was utilized to facilitate the stability of solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) film, so the growth of dendritic Li is suppressed via the synergistic effect of structure and surface chemistry regulation. The obtained Li anode can achieve cycling stability at a high current density of 10 mA/cm2. This work considers multiaspect factors inducing uniform Li electrodeposition, and provides new insights for the commercialization of LMB.

Abstract:This paper examines the controversy surrounding anthropologist Carleton S. Coon’s 1962 book, The Origin of Races. Coon maintained that the human sspecies was divided into five races before it had evolved into Homo sapiens and that the races evolved into sapiens at different times. Coon’s thesis was used by segregationists in the United States as proof that African Americans were “junior” to white Americans and hence unfit for full participation in American society. The paper examines the interactions among Coon, segregationist Carleton Putnam, geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky, and anthropologist Sherwood Washburn. The paper concludes that Coon actively aided the segregationist cause in violation of his own standards for scientific objectivity.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is facing the challenge of poor cyclic performance and potential safety hazards caused by Li dendrites growth. Herein, the role of charge-transfer and mass-transfer process on dendrite growth and fast charging is illustrated. The effects of charge-transfer coefficient, applied current density, concave-convex structure, and properties of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on guiding the lithium dendrite growth are investigated via a mechano-electrochemical phase-field model. The charge-transfer coefficient is meaningful for regulating the redox rate of electrode surface. Large applied current density and high ion conductivity of artificial SEI influence the distribution of local deposition rate significantly. Different deposition behaviors are found on concave and convex Li metal surfaces. The convex surface is more sensitive than a concave surface and is easy to generate Li dendrites under the conditions of high applied current density and high ion conductivity. Moreover, the experimental results can well reflect the influence of dendrite growth and dead Li on the capacity. This study not only provides an essential perspective on designing the artificial SEI for resolving the harmful dendrite issues but also boosts the practical applicability of Li metal battery.

Abstract:Rechargeable metallic lithium batteries are the ultimate solution to electrochemical storage due to their high theoretical energy densities. One of the key technological challenges is to control the morphology of metallic lithium electrode during electrochemical dissolution and deposition. Here we have investigated the morphology change of metallic lithium electrode after charging and discharging in nonaqueous batteries by ex situ SEM techniques from a top view. Formation of the hole structure after lithium dissolution and the filling of dendrite-like lithium into the holes has been observed for the first time. In addition, an in situ SEM investigation using an all-solid Li/Li2O/super aligned carbon nanotube set-up indicates that lithium ions could diffuse across through the surface oxide layer and grow lithium dendrites after applying an external electric field. The growth of lithium dendrites can be guided by electron flow when the formed lithium dendrite touches the carbon nanotube.

Abstract:Lithium reactivity with electrolytes leads to their continuous consumption and dendrite growth, which constitute major obstacles to harnessing the tremendous energy of lithium-metal anode in a reversible manner. Considerable attention has been focused on inhibiting dendrite via interface and electrolyte engineering, while admitting electrolyte-lithium metal reactivity as a thermodynamic inevitability. Here, we report the effective suppression of such reactivity through a nano-porous separator. Calculation assisted by diversified characterizations reveals that the separator partially desolvates Li+ in confinement created by its uniform nanopores, and deactivates solvents for electrochemical reduction before Li-0-deposition occurs. The consequence of such deactivation is realizing dendrite-free lithium-metal electrode, which even retaining its metallic lustre after long-term cycling in both Li-symmetric cell and high-voltage Li-metal battery with LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 as cathode. The discovery that a nano-structured separator alters both bulk and interfacial behaviors of electrolytes points us toward a new direction to harness lithium-metal as the most promising anode.

Abstract:The transition of Li dendrites with increasing current densities is revealed.In/ex-situ microscopy and phase field simulations are employed.The locally concentrated electric field induces aggregated Li dendrites.Lithium (Li) metal anodes promise an ultrahigh theoretical energy density and low redox potential, thus being the critical energy material for next-generation batteries. Unfortunately, the formation of Li dendrites in Li metal anodes remarkably hinders the practical applications of Li metal anodes. Herein, the dynamic evolution of discrete Li dendrites and aggregated Li dendrites with increasing current densities is visualized by in-situ optical microscopy in conjunction with ex-situ scanning electron microscopy. As revealed by the phase field simulations, the formation of aggregated Li dendrites under high current density is attributed to the locally concentrated electric field rather than the depletion of Li ions. More specifically, the locally concentrated electric field stems from the spatial inhomogeneity on the Li metal surface and will be further enhanced with increasing the current densities. Adjusting the above two factors with the help of the constructed phase field model is able to regulate the electrodeposited morphology from aggregated Li dendrites to discrete Li dendrites, and ultimately columnar Li morphology. The methodology and mechanistic understanding established herein give a significant step toward the practical applications of Li metal anodes.

Abstract:The lithium dendrites have traditionally been thought as one of the main causes for the failure of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries. Although many strategies have been proposed to suppress the dendrite growth, there are few effective ones to modulate the lithium metal anode itself. In this study, the cycled lithium foils with free growing dendrites are used as the self-template to construct the unique microscale patterns through mechanical compression. The influences of the unique morphology as well as the generated residual stress during compression process are investigated. It is found that preferential deposition/stripping of lithium in the pores takes place due to the synergistic effects of surface morphology and residual stress field. In turn, the reused lithium electrodes in a symmetric cell exhibit extraordinary cycle stability at a high current density of 5 mA cm−2 with a large depth of discharge of 10 mAh cm−2. The half-cell paired with Li4Ti5O12 also delivers superior rate capability. The facile and efficient mechanical strategy demonstrates that the residual stress field need be considered as a new design factor. In addition, the modulation of cycled lithium metal anodes sheds light on the recycle of waste lithium.

Dendrites in Lithium Metal Anodes: Suppression, Regulation, and Elimination

Abstract:With the increasing diversification of portable electronics and large-scale energy storage systems, conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with graphite anodes are now approaching their theoretical limits. Lithium metal, as the "Holy Grail" electrode for next-generation rechargeable batteries, is being revisited to meet the booming demand for high energy density electrodes due to its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and negative redox potential. Nevertheless, typical issues like notorious dendrite growth still hamper the bulk application of Li metal anodes. Dendrite growth renders increased surface area of the lithium metal, causing persistent depletion of the electrolyte and active materials, facilitating catastrophic failure of the battery, and even inducing fatal safety hazards. The consequences become more serious during operation at high current densities and over long cycling life. Therefore, it is urgent to suppress and even eliminate dendrite formation during the Li plating/stripping process. This Account highlights several innovative strategies for dendrite suppression, dendrite regulation, and dendrite elimination from the perspective of interface energy and bulk stresses. First, we review the fundamental mechanism of dendrite formation and growth in Li metal anodes. We show that the dendrite morphology could be substantially ameliorated, in theory, by homogenizing the electric field distribution, lowering the Li ion concentration gradient, and facilitating mechanical blocking. Next, we address the problem of dendrite suppression by applying two-dimensional (2D) materials to Li metal systems and preventing dendrite penetration through stress release and mechanical blocking. Graphene with a high specific area and vermiculite sheets (VSs) with a large physical rigidity were demonstrated to be efficacious in reinforcing Li anodes and polymer electrolytes separately. However, Li dendrite growth is a continuous process and remains inevitable with increasing current density and cycling life. Instead of suppressing dendrite growth, we focus on how to regulate homogeneous Li dendrite formation and growth. Dendrite regulation means to allow dendrite growth but take steps to transform it into Li with a smooth morphology. We introduce two main strategies to regulate Li growth: (i) guiding Li nucleation and (ii) controlling the Li growth pathways and directions. These processes greatly rely on the interface energy between the substrate and Li atoms. Elimination of the dendrites, which is the most formidable challenge for dendrite control, can also be achieved by dynamically engineering the force, such as deflecting the electric field by Lorentz force in a magnetic field, enhancing the integrated yield stress by the design of bulk nanostructured materials, and reducing the lateral Li diffusion barrier by a biomimetic co-deposition process. Solutions to the challenges of dendrite control in Li metal anodes can provide safe next-generation rechargeable lithium metal batteries that have a long cycling life. We also hope that our strategies presented in this Account can offer promise for other metal batteries.

Intercepting Dendrite Growth With a Heterogeneous Solid Electrolyte for Long-Life All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The application of lithium metal anode in all-solid-state batteries has the potential to achieve both high energy density and safety performance. However, the presence of serious dendrite issues hinders this potential. Here, the ion transport pathways and orientation of dendrite growth are regulated by utilizing the differences of ionic conductivity in heterogeneous electrolytes. The in situ formed Li-Ge alloy phases from the spontaneous reaction between Li10GeP2S12 and the attracted dendrites greatly enhance the ability to resist dendrite growth. As an outcome, the heterogeneous electrolyte achieves a high critical current density of 2.1 mA cm-2 and long-term stable symmetrical battery operation (0.3 mA cm-2 for 17 000 h and 1.0 mA cm-2 for 2000 h). Besides, due to the superior interfacial stability and low interface impedance between the heterogeneous electrolyte and lithium anode, the Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full battery exhibits great cycling stability (80.5% after 500 cycles at 1.0 mA cm-2) and rate performance (125.4 mAh g at 2.0 mA cm-2). This work provides a unique strategy of interface regulation via heterogeneous electrolytes design, offering insights into the development of state-of the-art all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:This study proposes a failure mechanism of the lithium metal anode under rather low current density/capacity. The anode and the electrolyte fail to maintain effective contact throughout the dynamic cycling process due to the accumulation and extrusion of lithium deposits. Curved lithium electrodes fabricated using the stamping method ensure effective electrode/electrolyte contact, resulting in dendrite‐free battery cycling. The generation of dendrites is a common issue of lithium metal battery, while the failure mechanism is still uncovered especially at low current densities/capacities. To better understand the mechanical factors caused by lithium morphologic evolution in the whole dynamic process of a cycle, this study proposes a failure mechanism of the lithium metal anode under a safe condition of rather low current density/capacity. The anode and the electrolyte fail to maintain effective contact throughout the dynamic cycling process due to the accumulation and extrusion of lithium deposits. To guarantee effective contact, a facile and low‐cost mechanical stamping method for lithium metal anode modification is accordingly presented. The curved lithium electrode can stably cycle for more than 300 cycles at 3 mA cm−2. This study is believed to provide a more in‐depth understanding toward the evolvement of lithium morphology to boost practical use of the lithium metal anodes.
