Abstract:Taking over vehicle control from a Level 3 conditionally automated vehicle can be a demanding task for a driver. The take-over determines the controllability of automated vehicle functions and thereby also traffic safety. This paper presents models predicting the main take-over performance variables take-over time, minimum time-to-collision, brake application and crash probability. These variables are considered in relation to the situational and driver-related factors time-budget, traffic density, non-driving-related task, repetition, the current lane and driver's age. Regression models were developed using 753 take-over situations recorded in a series of driving simulator experiments. The models were validated with data from five other driving simulator experiments of mostly unrelated authors with another 729 take-over situations. The models accurately captured take-over time, time-to-collision and crash probability, and moderately predicted the brake application. Especially the time-budget, traffic density and the repetition strongly influenced the take-over performance, while the non-driving-related tasks, the lane and drivers' age explained a minor portion of the variance in the take-over performances.

A Study on the Entire Take-Over Process-Based Emergency Obstacle Avoidance Behavior

Abstract:Nowadays, conditional automated driving vehicles still need drivers to take-over in the scenarios such as emergency hazard events or driving environments beyond the system's control. This study aimed to explore the changing trend of the drivers' takeover behavior under the influence of traffic density and take-over budget time for the entire take-over process in emergency obstacle avoidance scenarios. In the driving simulator, a 2 × 2 factorial design was adopted, including two traffic densities (high density and low density) and two kinds of take-over budget time (3 s and 5 s). A total of 40 drivers were recruited, and each driver was required to complete four simulation experiments. The driver's take-over process was divided into three phases, including the reaction phase, control phase, and recovery phase. Time parameters, dynamics parameters, and operation parameters were collected for each take-over phase in different obstacle avoidance scenarios. This study analyzed the variability of traffic density and take-over budget time with take-over time, lateral behavior, and longitudinal behavior. The results showed that in the reaction phase, the driver's reaction time became shorter as the scenario urgency increased. In the control phase, the steering wheel reversal rate, lateral deviation rate, braking rate, average speed, and takeover time were significantly different at different urgency levels. In the recovery phase, the average speed, accelerating rate, and take-over time differed significantly at different urgency levels. For the entire take-over process, the entire take-over time increased with the increase in urgency. The lateral take-over behavior tended to be aggressive first and then became defensive, and the longitudinal take-over behavior was defensive with the increase in urgency. The findings will provide theoretical and methodological support for the improvement of take-over behavior assistance in emergency take-over scenarios. It will also be helpful to optimize the human-machine interaction system.
Take-Over Performance and Safety Analysis Under Different Scenarios and Secondary Tasks in Conditionally Automated Driving

Abstract:In conditionally automated driving, the driver is required to take-over control of a vehicle if a take-over request is issued due to possible system limitations. This study investigates the effect of roadway environments and secondary tasks on take-over performance and safety. The experiment was conducted in a real vehicle-based driving simulator. Participants experienced three different traffic scenarios, including a non-critical scenario and two critical scenarios. Manual driving, a 1-back cognitive secondary task and a letter game task were each tested in each scenario. Results indicate that different driving scenarios and secondary tasks impact take-over characteristics; in particular, they have a strong effect on take-over time and driver workload, which impacts take-over safety. Specifically, the steering reaction was generally slower than the braking reaction, indicating that lateral operation requires more cognitive and decision-making time. In extreme cases, braking operation alone was insufficient to ensure safety, and steering operation was required. When obstacles were difficult to detect, or when the driver was engaged in a visual secondary task, the steering reaction time increased significantly. This study provides data for take-over safety evaluations and best practices of conditionally automated driving.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction In a context of increasing automation of road transport, many researchers have been dedicated to analyse the risks and safety implications of resuming the manual control of a vehicle after a period of automated driving. This paper performs a systematic review about drivers’ performance during takeover manoeuvres in driving simulator, a tool that is widely used in the evaluation of automated systems to reproduce risky situations that would not be possible to test in real roads. Objectives The main objectives are to provide a framework for the main strategies, experimental conditions and results obtained by takeover research using driving simulation, as well as to find whether different approaches may lead to different outcomes. Methodology First, a literature search following the PRISMA statement guidelines and checklist resulted in 36 relevant papers, which were described in detail according to the type of scenarios and takeover events, drivers’ engagement in secondary tasks and the assessed takeover performance measures. Then, those papers were included in a meta-analysis combining PAM clustering and ANOVA techniques to find patterns among the experimental conditions and to determine if those patterns have influence on the observed takeover performance. Conclusions Less complex experiments without secondary task engagement and conducted in low-fidelity simulators are associated with lower takeover times and crash rates. The takeover time increases with the time budget of the first alert, which reduces the pressure for a driver’s quick intervention.

Abstract:When a conditionally automated vehicle controlled by the machine faces situations beyond the capability of the machine, the human driver is requested to take over the vehicle. This study aims to assess the short-term effects of three factors on the takeover performance: (1) traffic conditions (complex and simple); (2) modality of takeover request (auditory and auditory + visual); (3) lead time of takeover request (TORlt, 5 s and 7 s). The scenario is the obstacle ahead. Indicators include: (1) Take Over Reaction Time (TOrt); (2) approximate entropy (ApEn), operating order of steering wheel Angle and pedal torque; (3) the choice of target lane and speed of lane-changing; (4) mean and standard deviation of acceleration and velocity; (5) quantifiable lateral cross-border risk and longitudinal collision risk. A driving simulation experiment is conducted to collect data for analysis. The effects of the three factors on takeover performance are analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and non-parametric tests. The results show that when the traffic conditions are complex, drivers have a larger ApEn of the steering wheel angle and brake pedal torque, and a smaller ApEn of acceleration pedal torque. In the 5 s TORlt case, drivers have a smaller ApEn of brake pedal torque the interaction between TORlt, traffic conditions, and modality of TOR affects ApEn of accelerator pedal torque. 5 s TORlt/complex traffic condition makes the scene more urgent, which is easy to cause driver to make sudden and simultaneous turning and sudden braking dangerous behavior meanwhile. Compared with other combinations of modality and TORlt, the combination of 7 s and auditory + visual significantly reduces the lateral cross-border risk and longitudinal collision risk.

Abstract:During human–machine codriving, drivers need to take over the vehicle when a take-over request (TOR) appears. If drivers have not received relevant training before driving, they may be unable to complete the take-over within the limited time, or the stability of subsequent vehicle control may be insufficient, which can lead to accidents. In this study, two types of take-over ability improvement methods are proposed. Participants were recruited and randomly divided into a control group (n = 15, no take-over training) and two experimental groups (n = 15, text-based training; n = 15, behavioral spectrum-based training). One-way ANOVA or the Kruskal–Wallis test and post hoc contrasts were used to analyze the differences in data indicators between the three groups of drivers after 20 take-over operations, and another method was proposed to validate the efficiency of the take-over operations on the stability of take-over ability. The results show that compared with the control group, both experimental groups demonstrated a significant improvement in take-over ability, with the behavioral spectrum-based training group exhibiting better take-over performance than the text-based training group. Moreover, after 14 take-over operations, drivers' take-over ability in the behavioral spectrum-based training group stabilized. The findings of this study can contribute to the safety of human–machine codriving vehicles and the design of future driver training systems.

Abstract:According to SAE J3016, autonomous driving can be divided into six levels, and partially automated driving is possible from level three up. A partially or highly automated vehicle can encounter situations involving total system failure. Here, we studied a strategy for safe takeover in such situations. A human-in-the-loop simulator, driver–vehicle interface, and driver monitoring system were developed, and takeover experiments were performed using various driving scenarios and realistic autonomous driving situations. The experiments allowed us to draw the following conclusions. The visual–auditory–haptic complex alarm effectively delivered warnings and had a clear correlation with the user’s subjective preferences. There were scenario types in which the system had to immediately enter minimum risk maneuvers or emergency maneuvers without requesting takeover. Lastly, the risk of accidents can be reduced by the driver monitoring system that prevents the driver from being completely immersed in non-driving-related tasks. We proposed a safe takeover strategy from these results, which provides meaningful guidance for the development of autonomous vehicles. Considering the subjective questionnaire evaluations of users, it is expected to improve the acceptance of autonomous vehicles and increase the adoption of autonomous vehicles.

Toward Computational Simulations of Behavior During Automated Driving Takeovers: A Review of the Empirical and Modeling Literatures

Abstract:Objective: This article provides a review of empirical studies of automated vehicle takeovers and driver modeling to identify influential factors and their impacts on takeover performance and suggest driver models that can capture them. Background: Significant safety issues remain in automated-to-manual transitions of vehicle control. Developing models and computer simulations of automated vehicle control transitions may help designers mitigate these issues, but only if accurate models are used. Selecting accurate models requires estimating the impact of factors that influence takeovers. Method: Articles describing automated vehicle takeovers or driver modeling research were identified through a systematic approach. Inclusion criteria were used to identify relevant studies and models of braking, steering, and the complete takeover process for further review. Results: The reviewed studies on automated vehicle takeovers identified several factors that significantly influence takeover time and post-takeover control. Drivers were found to respond similarly between manual emergencies and automated takeovers, albeit with a delay. The findings suggest that existing braking and steering models for manual driving may be applicable to modeling automated vehicle takeovers. Conclusion: Time budget, repeated exposure to takeovers, silent failures, and handheld secondary tasks significantly influence takeover time. These factors in addition to takeover request modality, driving environment, non-handheld secondary tasks, level of automation, trust, fatigue, and alcohol significantly impact post-takeover control. Models that capture these effects through evidence accumulation were identified as promising directions for future work. Application: Stakeholders interested in driver behavior during automated vehicle takeovers may use this article to identify starting points for their work.
Examining the Effects of Visibility and Time Headway on the Takeover Risk during Conditionally Automated Driving

Abstract:The objective of this study is to examine the effects of visibility and time headway on the takeover performance in L3 automated driving. Both non-critical and critical driving scenarios were considered by changing the acceleration value of the leading vehicle. A driving simulator experiment with 18 driving scenarios was conducted and 30 participants complete the experiment. Based on the data obtained from the experiment, the takeover reaction time, takeover control time, and takeover responses were analyzed. The minimum Time-To-Collision (Min TTC) was used to measure the takeover risk level and a binary logit model for takeover risk levels was estimated. The results indicate that the visibility distance (VD) has no significant effects on the takeover control time, while the time headway (THW) and the acceleration of the leading vehicle (ALV) could affect the takeover control time significantly; most of the participants would push the gas pedal to accelerate the ego vehicle as the takeover response under non-critical scenarios, while braking was the dominant takeover response for participants in critical driving scenarios; decreasing the TCT and taking the appropriate takeover response would reduce the takeover risk significantly, so it is suggested that the automation system should provide the driver with the urgency of the situation ahead and the tips for takeover responses by audio prompts or the head-up display. This study is expected to facilitate the overall understanding of the effects of visibility and time headway on the takeover performance in conditionally automated driving.

Abstract:In conditional automated driving, the takeover response ability threshold is necessary for driver qualification assessment and liability division of automated vehicle accidents. The primary objective of this study is to establish a clear and quantifiable threshold for drivers' takeover response ability in conditional automated driving scenarios. This threshold aims to serve as a benchmark for evaluating drivers' readiness and developing safety regulations in automated driving. We designed 18 takeover events and invited 42 drivers to participate in the driving simulation experiment, and obtained their takeover time data. First, we analyze the differences of takeover time among drivers with different attributes (gender, age, driving year). Second, based on the Peaks Over Threshold and the generalized Pareto distribution model, we use the graphic method to calculate the range of takeover time threshold for drivers with different attributes. The result shows that the difference in the threshold range of takeover time between male and female drivers is relatively tiny. There are differences in the threshold range of takeover time for different age drivers, and the threshold is negatively correlated with age. Drivers with high driving experience within a safe range are allowed to have longer takeover times. Finally, the rationality of the takeover time threshold for drivers with different attributes has been verified. The return level curves are approximately linear ( R 2 > 0.77), indicating that the GPD model can capture the overall trend of the return level, which is changing with the probability level. This proves that the takeover time threshold is reasonable. This study uses TTC min to calibrate takeover safety, and the takeover time threshold has a good classification performance for takeover safety (accuracy > 85 %). The above content proves the rationality of the takeover time threshold. The contribution of this study is to calculate the takeover time threshold of drivers with different attributes, which can help regulatory authorities assess the driver's takeover response ability and support the liability division of automated vehicle accidents.

Abstract:Automated vehicles have received great attention, since they offer the possibility of significantly increasing traffic safety, mobility, and driver comfort. Current automation technology is still imperfect; therefore, there will still he situations in which the automation will not he able to handle and will request the driver to suspend nondriving tasks and take over control of the automated vehicle in a limited period of time. Accordingly, it is necessary to understand the effects of the lead time of takeover request as well as nondriving tasks on driver take-over. The present driving simulator experiment studied the effects of lead time and various realistic nondriving tasks on take-over behavior and driver acceptance to the automated vehicle. Results suggested optimal driver take-over performance when the lead time of the take-over request was 10-60 s for general nondriving tasks. Specifically, a take-over request with lead time at 10-60 s led to lower crash rate, greater minimum time-to-collision, and lower lateral acceleration. However, a longer lead time (e.g., 15-60 s) was necessary to achieve optimal driver acceptance even though drivers could successfully take over control with shorter lead time (e.g., 10 s). In addition, driver take over performance was significantly influenced by nondriving tasks. When more sensory modalities were occupied or when the cognitive load was very low, driver take-over performance was impaired, especially when the take-over request was too late (e.g., lead time was 3 s). Potential applications of the results in designing of take-over request in automated vehicles were further discussed.
Safety evaluation and prediction of takeover performance in automated driving considering drivers’ cognitive load: A driving simulator study

Abstract:Automated vehicles alleviate the need for driver attention and control. However, a takeover request (TOR) to the driver remains essential for emergencies and safety–critical scenarios beyond automation's capability. Thus, accessing drivers’ safety performance in various TOR scenarios is crucial for conditionally automated driving (SAE L3). However, TOR safety performance is seldom examined concerning drivers' cognitive load, despite its presumed relevance to TOR scenarios and human–machine interaction. Moreover, the adequacy of the time window preceding a TOR, critical for TOR safety prediction, remains inadequately explored. This study aims to assess safety performance across diverse TOR scenarios in Level 3 conditional automation, incorporating drivers’ cognitive load, and predict TOR safety by considering the time window's impact. A driving simulator experiment gathered eye movement and driving behavior data from 37 recruited participants. Participants were instructed to take control of the vehicle from automated driving within a time budget (TB) of 3 s or 7 s in obstacle avoidance (OA) or lane keeping (LK) scenarios while engaging in non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs). Participants’ subjective cognitive load in the different TOR scenarios was scaled using NASA-TLX. Furthermore, safe TOR performance was predicted utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) across different time window sizes preceding a TOR. The results indicate that: 1) cognitive loads in takeover scenarios ranked from highest to lowest as TB = 3s_OA, TB = 3s_LK, TB = 7s_OA, TB = 7s_LK; and the cognitive loads of the NDRTs ranked from highest to lowest as mistake finding, texting, chatting, monitoring; 2) the takeover safety performance in the four scenarios from lowest to highest was TB = 3s_OA, TB = 3s_LK, TB = 7s_OA, TB = 7s_LK; likewise, the takeover safety performance during the four NDRTs ranked from lowest to highest as mistake finding, monitoring, texting, chatting; 3) the time window size before the TORs significantly affected the prediction performance of the model. A 30-second window was recommended as optimal for predicting takeover safety using the CNN model, achieving an average F1 score of 0.8120 and 81.98 % accuracy. This study's findings enhance our comprehension of driving behavior characteristics during TOR and offer valuable insights for detecting driver states in conditionally automated driving contexts.

Abstract:This study carried out a simulator test to determine and predict the duration of reduced driver performance during the automated driving takeover process. Vehicle trajectory and driver behavior data were collected in critical and non-critical takeover scenarios. The earth mover's distance was then adopted to identify the data with the optimal combination of indicators by comparing it to the reference data. The Gaussian mixture model was employed to classify the driving state as either stable or unstable, and the duration of reduced driver performance was derived for each participant based on these results. Subsequently, a generalized linear mixed model was developed to predict the duration of reduced driver performance and examine the impact of various factors on it. Results uncovered a recovery of the reduced driver performance state after drivers took over the automated vehicle. In the non-critical and critical takeover scenarios, the mean duration of reduced driver performance was 17.48 and 27.25 s, respectively. Additionally, the developed model demonstrated good overall prediction accuracy, with the duration of reduced driver performance showing a positive correlation with the lead vehicle's speed, duration of automated driving, and takeover request lead time. Furthermore, timid drivers exhibited a longer recovery duration than aggressive drivers. These research findings offer valuable insights into understanding the recovery of reduced driver performance during the takeover process, serving as a theoretical foundation for designing safer automated driving systems.

Driver takeover performance in conditionally automated driving: sudden system failure situation versus ODD exit situation

Abstract:Conditionally automated driving is expected to become available to the public in near future. However, the driver is expected to take over control from the system when a sudden system failure occurs or when the driving automation system is approaching its operational design domain (ODD) exit. The time budget for drivers to take over control is different: (1) in the sudden system failure situation, the system needs to be deactivated immediately with issuing a request to intervene (RTI); (2) in the ODD exit situation, the system could keep active for a while after the issue of RTI. In this paper, two hypotheses were put forward based on driver’s expected utility analysis: (1) the drivers respond faster to the RTI in the system failure situation; (2) the drivers perform smoother driving behaviour after takeover in the ODD exit situation. We recruited 32 participants to conduct a driving simulator experiment, in which the driver takeover performance in system failure situation was compared with that in the ODD exit condition. Results revealed that drivers responded significantly faster in the system failure situation. There was no significant difference of longitudinal takeover performance between the two types of limitations. However, the drivers generally performed smoother lateral takeover performance in the ODD exit situation, which supported our hypothesis.

Abstract:As human-machine collaborative driving systems, highly automated driving vehicles require human drivers to take over when take-over requests are triggered. Extensive studies have shown that drivers' take-over performance is affected by their fatigue state, traffic conditions, and the take-over time budget (TB). However, there is still a paucity of a systematic understanding of how these factors affect take-over performance, which prevents the implementation of adaptive take-over systems. This study establishes a highly accurate take-over performance prediction model to systematically explore the effects of these factors on take-over performance and to propose an adaptive TB adjustment strategy for highly automated driving vehicles. First, we propose metrics to evaluate drivers' fatigue states and the relative positions of surrounding traffic. Second, a generalized additive model is established to predict take-over performance and accurately evaluate the influence of the aforementioned factors on take-over performance. Based on the model, we propose an adaptive adjustment strategy of the TB for take-over systems and demonstrate its effectiveness by a verification experiment. This study contributes to understanding the influence of drivers' passive fatigue states, the relative positions of surrounding traffic, and the TB on drivers' take-over performance as well as to the development of adaptive take-over systems for highly automated vehicles.
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Takeover Performance During Conditionally Automated Driving

Abstract:Objective The aim of this paper was to synthesize the experimental research on factors that affect takeover performance during conditionally automated driving. Background For conditionally automated driving, the automated driving system (ADS) can handle the entire dynamic driving task but only for limited domains. When the system reaches a limit, the driver is responsible for taking over vehicle control, which may be affected by how much time they are provided to take over, what they were doing prior to the takeover, or the type of information provided to them during the takeover. Method Out of 8446 articles identified by a systematic literature search, 48 articles containing 51 experiments were included in the meta-analysis. Coded independent variables were time budget, non-driving related task engagement and resource demands, and information support during the takeover. Coded dependent variables were takeover timing and quality measures. Results Engaging in non-driving related tasks results in degraded takeover performance, particularly if it has overlapping resource demands with the driving task. Weak evidence suggests takeover performance is impaired with shorter time budgets. Current implementations of information support did not affect takeover performance. Conclusion Future research and implementation should focus on providing the driver more time to take over while automation is active and should further explore information support. A Takeover Risk Assessment Approach Based on an Improved ANP-XGBoost Algorithm for Human-Machine Driven Vehicles

Abstract:This study evaluates the risk level of human-machine collaborative driving takeover in a highway environment under the interaction of non-driving related tasks and takeover request prompt scenarios. Using a driving simulator, a 5x5 factor analysis examined non-driving tasks and takeover prompts. Takeover impact and risk indicator features were extracted, with risk indicators weighted using an improved ANP method. On this basis, the XGBoost algorithm was employed to identify crucial variables that reflect the level of takeover risk and to construct a driver takeover risk assessment model. The evaluation results indicate that the risk indicator feature with the greatest influence on the takeover risk level was the minimum TTC, which had the highest correlation (r=-0.81); the scene factor in the takeover influence feature had the highest correlation with the takeover risk level (r=-0.78), which had the greatest influence on driver takeover safety; Although non-driving related tasks exhibited a weak correlation with takeover reaction time, steering reaction time, and minimum TTC, the effect was minor. The XGBoost algorithm-based risk assessment model demonstrated superior performance over LightGBM and SVM, with 87.1% accuracy. Overall, this study highlights the significant influence of takeover scenes and minimum TTC on collaborative driving risk, enabling accurate risk modeling.

Abstract:A variety of takeover scenarios will happen in conditionally automated driving. Previous studies presented mixed results regarding the effects of scenarios on takeover performance. According to drivers' strategies for takeover requests, this study selected eight representative takeover scenarios and categorized them into lane keeping and lane changing scenarios. To investigate the effects of scenario type and road environment (highway vs. urban) on drivers' takeover performance and physiological responses, a driving simulation study was conducted as a mixed design with 40 participants (average age = 22.8 years). The results showed that in lane changing scenarios, with the same sensing capability, drivers on highways had deteriorated takeover performance in the form of harsher takeover maneuvers and higher collision risk, as well as higher arousal and stress, compared to urban areas. However, such effects disappeared or even reversed in lane keeping scenarios on the curves, where drivers on highways had smoother takeover maneuvers and lower arousal and stress. These findings will help us understand the vital roles scenario type and road environment play during takeover transitions. Our findings have implications for the design of advanced driver-assistance systems and will improve driving safety in conditionally automated driving.
