Abstract:In this study, original and two KMnO4-modified rice straw biochars (pre- and postmodification) were prepared, which were all pyrolysed at 400 °C. Premodified biochar had the largest Cd adsorption capacity, strongest acid and solute buffering capacity, which benefited from the increase of carbonate content, specific surface area, and the emergence of Mn(II) and MnOx through modification. Original and premodified biochars were then conducted four types of aging process by an improved three-layer mesh method, namely, aging without soil and co-aging with acid (pH = 5.00), neutral (pH = 7.00), and alkaline (pH = 8.30) soils. The adsorption capacities of modified biochar were always larger than those of original biochar after aging processes. After four aging processes, Cd(II) adsorption capacities were basically in the order of aged biochar without soil > biochar co-aged with alkaline soil > biochar co-aged with neutral soil > biochar co-aged with acid soil, and KMnO4-modified biochar was always better than original biochar after co-aging with soils. The dominant adsorption mechanism of original and premodified biochars (fresh and aged) for Cd(II) was all the precipitation and adsorption with minerals (accounted for 58.55 ~ 85.55%). In this study, we highlighted that biochar remediation for Cd should be evaluated by co-aging with soil instead of aging without soil participation.

Abstract:To reveal the respective evolution of soil and biochar on competitive heavy metal adsorption mechanisms after natural ageing, three soils and two biochars were tested in this study. The soil-biochar interlayer samples were buried in the field for 0.5, 1, and 2 years, for which competitive adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of soils and biochars in four systems (Cd, Cd+Ni, Cd+Cu, and Cd+Ni+Cu) were investigated. Results showed that physicochemical properties, adsorption capacity and mechanisms of soils and biochars all changed the most in the first 0.5 years. The properties and adsorption capacity of biochars gradually weakened with the ageing time, meanwhile, those of soils gradually enhanced. After co-ageing with acidic soil for 0.5 years, the Cd(II) adsorption capacity of modified biochar decreased by 86.59% in the ternary system; meanwhile, that of acidic soil increased by 65.52%. The contributions of mineral mechanisms decreased significantly, while non-mineral mechanisms were slightly affected by ageing. This study highlighted that when using biochar to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils, biochar should be applied at least half a year in advance before planting crops so that biochar can fully contact and react with the soil.

Abstract:Purpose Fresh biochar was shown to effectively reduce concentrations of heavy metal in soil, but the influences of the aging processes of biochar and competitions from other elements are warranted to precisely evaluate the long-term effect of biochar. This work investigated the effects of water washing, oxidation, and coexistence of aluminum (Al) on cadmium (Cd) adsorption by biochars and oxidized biochars. Materials and methods The Cd adsorption and the competitive adsorption of Cd and Al to rice straw-derived biochars, before and after oxidation by HNO 3 /H 2 SO 4 , were investigated. Meanwhile, the structural characteristics and surface charges of primary and oxidized biochars, with and without Cd loading, were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential. Results and discussion The adsorption of Cd onto fresh biochars was dominated by surface complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups via esterification reactions, which was regulated by solution pH. Oxidization (aging) introduced carboxylic functional groups to biochar surfaces, which served as additional binding sites for Cd. The Cd binding to biochars was significantly affected by the coexistence of Al via acidification and competition for adsorption sites. Conclusions The biochars exhibited high sorption capacities of Cd in soil, but soil acidification led to a counteractive of biochar’s liming effect and a reduction of Cd-binding sites; thus, the long-term effect of biochar for heavy metal immobilization should be paid more attention in acidic soil.
Effect of combined aging treatment on biochar adsorption and speciation distribution for Cd(II)

Abstract:As a passivation material for heavy metals in-situ remediation, biochar (BC) has often been expected to maintain long-term adsorption performance for target pollutants. There is still lack of consensus about the impact of aging processes on biochar properties, particularly with respect to its long-term sorption performance. In this study, the changes to immobilization mechanisms as well as the speciation distribution of Cd(II) triggered by combined aging simulation (dry-wet, freeze-thaw cycle and oxidation treatment) on BC prepared under three levels of pyrolysis temperatures (300, 500 and 700 °C) were investigated. The results showed significant inhibition of aging on adsorption performance with the adsorptive capacity of BC300, BC500 and BC700 for Cd(II) decreased by 31.12 %, 50.63 % and 14.94 %, respectively. However, sequential extraction results indicated little influence of the aging process on the relative fractionation of Cd(II) speciation. The distribution of readily bioavailable, potentially bioavailable and non-bioavailable fractions of Cd(II) on BC showed only minimal changes post-aging. Overall, there was less Cd(II) sorption following aging, but the fractional availability (in relative terms) remained the same. Compared with 300 and 700 °C, the biochar prepared under 500 °C accounted the highest fraction of non-bioavailable Cd(II) (67.23 % of BC500, 59.17 % of Aged-500), and thus showed most promising for Cd(II) immobilization. This study has important practical significance for the long-term application of biochar in real environment.

Abstract:Biochar is widely used for environmental remediation. However, the effects of aging on the bioavailability of trace metals in biochar-amended soil remain largely unknown, especially for the biochars with various concentrations of endogenous metals. In this study, three biochars marked as BB, MB, and HB were produced from the straws of Pennisetum sinese grown in background soil, moderately-, and highly-polluted soils by trace metals, respectively. We distinguished the effects of dry-wet (DW) and freeze-thaw (FT) aging on the bioavailability of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) from soil particles, the biochar interior, and the surface of biochar. The adsorption capacities of Cu2+ and Cd2+ followed the order of BB > MB > HB. DW and FT aging both increased the adsorption capacity of Cu2+, but decreased that of Cd2+ in the three biochars, resulting in a reduction in Cu bioavailability and increase in Cd bioavailability in the biochars after the saturated adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+. The incorporation of the three biochars decreased Cu bioavailability compared to the control after incubation for 30d, while the addition of MB increased Cd bioavailability. DW and FT aging decreased Cu bioavailability in biochar-amended soil by decreasing the bioavailability of Cu adsorbed on the biochar surface and immobilized by soil particles. Meanwhile, aging decreased Cd bioavailability by decreasing the bioavailability of Cd immobilized by soil particles. Overall, environmental risk would be increased by the application of biochars with high endogenous Cd. The major implications are that biochar dosage and environmental risk should be carefully assessed before large-scale, continuous application, especially for biochars containing high contents of endogenous trace metals.
Influence of Aged Biochar Modified by Cd2+ on Soil Properties and Microbial Community

Abstract:Biochar is a promising addition for cadmium-contaminated soil in-situ remediation, but its surface properties change after aging, cadmium adsorption is not well-documented, and subsequent environmental effects are still unknown. In this study, wood-derived (Eucalyptus saligna Sm.) biochar was pre-treated to simulate aging and the cadmium sorption process. We then analyzed the resulting physicochemical characteristics. We conducted comparative incubation studies on three age stages of biochar under cadmium adsorption or no cadmium adsorption and then measured soil properties and microbial communities after incubation. Biochar addition raised soil organic carbon (SOC), and aging significantly increased C/N ratios. Aged biochar promoted higher microbial abundance. Aged biochar treatments possessed different microflora with more gram-positive bacteria, significantly altering gram-positive/gram-negative bacteria ratios. Aging significantly increased the oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs) and surface area (SA) of biochar. Thus, aged biochar adsorbed more cadmium. Cadmium-binding biochar increased the proportion of gram-negative bacteria and decreased the proportions of gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Similar patterns in phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) across adsorption treatments indicated that changes in microbial communities due to the effects of cadmium were confined. The results reveal that biochar aging altered microbial community structure and function more than cadmium binding.

Contrasting impacts of pre- and post-application aging of biochar on the immobilization of Cd in contaminated soils

Abstract:Biochar has been used for immobilizing heavy metals in soils due to its abundant surface functional groups and mineral components. However, as carbonaceous material, biochar in soils is susceptible to natural aging, which could alter its structural properties and ability to retain heavy metals. In this study, the impacts of pre- and post-application aging on the properties of dairy manure and sawdust biochars and the significance of different mechanisms of complexation with surface functional groups and mineral precipitation for Cd immobilization in soils were investigated. The simulated natural aging including 25 dry-wet cycles and 25 freeze-thaw cycles decreased the pH of biochar from 8.2 to 10.7 to 7.5-9.7 while increased the release of dissolved organic carbon from 4.1 to 10.9 to 5.9-21.3 mg L-1, O/C ratios from 0.09 to 0.30 to 0.17-0.33, and O-containing functional groups, especially -OH and -C=O groups. New minerals such as CaC2O4 and MgO·MgCO3 were formed during freeze-thaw cycles. The capacity of pre-aged biochars to immobilize Cd in soils decreased from 57-70% to 53-63%, compared to that of fresh biochar, which was mainly due to decrease of CdCO3 or Cd3(PO4)2 precipitation as evidenced by XRD and MINTEQ modeling. By contrast, post-aging of biochar application in soil with dry-wet and freeze-thaw cycling had little effect on the biochar's alkalinity while increased the O/C ratios from 0.10 to 0.24 to 0.15-0.27 and intensity of O-containing functional groups. The immobilization capacity of biochars for Cd in soil increased from 44-68% to 59-73% due to the enhanced surface complexation with O-containing groups. In short, biochar subjected to pre-aging had a reduced capacity to immobilize Cd, while biochars with post-aging in soil increased its Cd immobilization capacity as a soil amendment.

Abstract:In this study, the influence of the aging process of pig-(PB) and P. orientalis-(POB) derived biochars on the sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soils for cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) with and without the co-existence of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was investigated. Additionally, the surface and internal characteristics of biochars were determined before and after their aging in soils. The PB-treated soil had a higher sorption capacity for Cd2+ and Zn2+ than the POB-treated soil. The sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soils for Cd2+ and Zn2+ increased with biochar application rates. After aging, the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochar surface, and the pH and organic carbon content of the biochar-treated soils significantly increased, thereby improving the sorption capacity for Cd2+ and Zn2+. The sorption capacities of biochar-treated soils for Cd2+ and Zn2+ followed the order of 1-month aging > 6-month aging > fresh. The co-existence of DEP enhanced the sorption capacity of the fresh biochar-treated soils for Cd2+ and Zn2+, whereas this enhancing effect disappeared for the aged biochar treatments. Our findings provide insights into the interactions between mixed contaminants in biochar-amended soils and the long-term efficacy of biochar treatments on metal sorption to soils.

Abstract:Biochar has been widely used in soil remediation because of its porosity and impressive efficiency. Many studies have demonstrated the good affinity of biochar for heavy metals (HMs), but efficient modification methods to increase the stability of multiple HMs are lacking. Moreover, few studies focus on biochar's potential ability to ageing resistance and changes in its physicochemical properties during freeze–thaw (F/T) cycles. Here, KMnO 4 -modification biochar (MBC) was prepared and the immobilization and anti-freeze performance of MBC on Cd, Zn and Pb in soil were investigated. The addition of 10 % MBC decreased concentrations of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) by 66.80 %, 25.39 % and 99.68 % for Cd, Zn and Pb, respectively, after 28 days, accompanied by a significant decrease in the phytoavailability and bioaccessibility of HMs in soil. Soil fertility was also improved by MBC application. Furthermore, frequent F/T cycles obviously induced the fragmentation of soil particles and enhanced the activity of HMs. Conversely, MBC particles became finer, accompanied by further oxidation and higher alkalinity but degraded pore structures during F/T cycles. The oxidation of lignocellulose and changes in C-O stretching were greatest among all functional groups in biochar. Therefore, MBC could suppress the migration of HMs through precipitation, cohesion of soil particles, and stronger complexation by oxygen-containing functional groups. Moreover, fractions of HMs were also transferred from exchangeable to potentially labile or nonlabile species. Overall, MBC displayed advantages in the stabilization of HMs and showed higher resistance to F/T cycles and promise for long-term remediation of HM-contaminated soils in cold regions.

Engineered biochars for simultaneous immobilization of as and Cd in soil: Field evidence

Abstract:Agricultural soil contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) poses a serious threat to food security. Immobilization serves as a widely used approach for the remediation of PTEs contaminated soils, nevertheless, the long-term effectiveness for the simultaneous immobilization of both cations and oxyanions remains a challenge. In order to effectively enhance the synergistic immobilization effect of soil As and Cd contaminated by multiple elements and improve the ecological environment of farmland. In this study, a typical polluted tailings area farmland was selected for situ immobilization experiments, and biochar was prepared from cow manure (CMB), rice straw (RSB), and pine wood (PWB) as raw materials. On this basis, the pristine biochar was modified with ferric chloride (F), potassium permanganate (K), magnesium chloride (M), and aluminum chloride (A), respectively. Furthermore, the immobilization effect of modified biochar on As-Cd and the stress effect on soil respiration were investigated. The results showed that CMB and RSB reduced the bioavailability of heavy metals, potassium permanganate has strong oxidizing properties, and the strong oxidability of potassium permanganate stimulated the generation of more oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of biochar, thereby enhancing the adsorption and complexation effect of modified materials on As and Cd. Among them, the extracted Cd concentration of Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) in KCMB and KRSB in 2020 decreased by 8.23-43.12% and 9.67-35.29% compared to other treatments, respectively. Meanwhile, the KCMB and KRSB treatments also reduced the enrichment of As and Cd in plant tissues. In addition, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in KCMB treatment was relatively high, and the carbon stability of the material was weakened. Simultaneously, the soil respiration emission of KCMB treatment was increased by 5.63% and 11.93% compared to KRSB and KPWB treatments, respectively. In addition, the structural equation also shows that DOC has a large positive effect on soil respiration. In summary, the KRSB treatment effectively achieve synergistic immobilization of As-Cd and provide important guiding significance for green and low-carbon remediation of polluted farmland.
Mechanisms for the Removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) from Aqueous Solution and Mine Water by Biochars Derived from Agricultural Wastes.

Abstract:The capacity of biochars derived from agricultural wastes to remove Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution and contaminated mine water was evaluated using laboratory-based batch sorption experiments. To examine immobilization of heavy metals, biochars produced in a commercial-scale mobile pyrolizer from feedstocks: poultry litter; lucerne shoot; vetch shoot; canola shoot; wheat straws; and sugar-gum wood, were tested in a liquid-based system. Biochars were characterized by FTIR, XPS and XRD before and after the mine water treatment. Lucerne biochar had the highest Langmuir sorption capacity of Cd(II) (6.28 mg g(-1)) and vetch-derived biochar had the highest Cu(II) sorption capacity (18.0 mg g(-1)) at pH 5.5. All the biochars exhibited higher sorption capacity for Cu(II) than for Cd(II). The smaller ionic radius and higher electronegativity of Cu(II), and the PO43-, CO32- and N-containing functional groups of biochars enhanced their binding affinity. The results demonstrated that poultry litter-derived biochar was effective at removal of the Cd(II) and Cu(II) from mine water up to the levels recommended by the World Health Organisation. The results revealed that precipitation with CO(3)(2- )and PO43-, complexation with -OH and -COOH groups and electrostatic interaction with O-containing surface functional groups were the main mechanisms involved in the removal of multi-metals by biochars, and that selection of feedstock materials for biochar production is important to maximise remediation of multi-metals in contaminated water. Biochar Aging Alters the Bioavailability of Cadmium and Microbial Activity in Acid Contaminated Soils

Abstract:The effects of biochar aging on heavy-metal bioavailability and microbial activity are not fully understood. This study determined the effect over 270 days of poultry-litter biochar (PBC) and sugar-gum-wood biochar (SBC) on the bioavailability of Cd and microbial activity in acidic soils differing in organic matter content. Soil basal and substrate-induced respirations, microbial properties, Cd bioavailability and plant Cd bioaccumulation were evaluated at 1, 30, 90 and 270 days. The addition of PBC decreased Cd bioaccumulation by 81% and 85% while SBC decreased bioaccumulation by 47% and 56% in high (Chromosol) and low (Sodosol) organic matter soils, respectively, at Day 1. By Day 270, Cd bioaccumulation significantly (P < 0.05) increased in SBC-amended soils but decreased in PBC-amended soils. The addition of PBC increased both basal and substrate-induced microbial respirations compared to the other treatments over 270-day aging. However, SBC increased microbial biomass C compared to the PBC after Day 30. Aging decreased microbial respiration and biomass C in biochar-amended soils. It is concluded that Cd bioaccumulation increased in SBC-amended soils during aging whereas the PBC decreased Cd bioaccumulation and that the selection of biochar is important to enhance remediation efficiency in the long term.
Effects of Physical Aging Processes on the Bioavailability of Heavy Metals in Contaminated Site Soil Amended with Chicken Manure and Wheat Straw Biochars.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of biochars undergo slow changes in soils due to the natural aging processes, which influences their interaction with heavy metals. The effects of aging on immobilization of co-existing heavy metals in contaminated soils amended with fecal and plant biochars possessing contrasting properties remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of wet-dry and freeze-thaw aging on the bioavailability (extractable by 0.01 M CaCl2) and chemical fractionation of Cd and Pb in a contaminated site soil amended with 2.5% (w/w) chicken manure (CM) biochar and wheat straw (WS) biochar. Compared to that in the unamended soil, the contents of bioavailable Cd and Pb in CM biochar-amended soil decreased by 18.0% and 30.8%, respectively, after 60 wet-dry cycles, and by 16.9% and 52.5%, respectively, after 60 freeze-thaw cycles. CM biochar, which contained significant levels of phosphates and carbonates, effectively reduced the bioavailability of Cd and Pb and transformed them from the labile chemical fractions to the more stable ones in the soil during the accelerated aging processes, mainly through precipitation and complexation. In contrast, WS biochar failed to immobilize Cd in the co-contaminated soil in both aging regimes, and was only effective at immobilizing Pb under freeze-thaw aging. The changes in the immobilization of co-existing Cd and Pb in the contaminated soil resulted from aginginduced increase in oxygenated functional groups on biochar surface, destruction of the biochar's porous structure, and release of dissolved organic carbon from the aged biochar and soil. These findings could help guide the selection of suitable biochars for simultaneous immobilization of multiple heavy metals in co-contaminated soil under changing environmental conditions (e.g., rainfall, and freezing and thawing of soils).
Effect of Aging on Stabilization of Cd and Ni by Biochars and Enzyme Activities in a Historically Contaminated Alkaline Agricultural Soil Simulated with Wet-Dry and Freeze-Thaw Cycling

Abstract:Natural aging alters the surface physicochemical properties of biochars, which can affect the retention of heavy metals. This work investigated the effect of biochar aging on stabilization of heavy metals (Cd and Ni) and soil enzyme activities simulated with laboratory wet-dry (WD) and freeze-thaw (FT) cycling. A wheat straw (WS) biochar and a corn straw (CS) biochar were subjected to 30 WD or FT cycles, and Cd- and Ni-contaminated alkaline soils amended with the two fresh biochars (at 5% w/w) were subjected to 30-day constant moisture incubation and 30 WD or FT cycles. WD and FT aging caused slight reduction in the pH of the biochars, significant increases in their O contents and surface areas, and formation of new carbonate minerals. WS biochar was more effective than CS biochar at reducing the phytoavailable Cd in the soil, with reduction of 12.1%, 14.6%, and 12.9% under constant moisture incubation, WD aging, and FT aging, respectively. Reduction in phytoavailability of Ni by the addition of biochars was observed only under WD aging, by 17.0% and 18.5% in the presence of WS and CS biochars, respectively. Biochar amendment also reduced the distribution of Cd in the acid soluble and reducible fractions in all aging regimes. The addition of biochars decreased catalase activity in almost all aging regimes and invertase activity under FT aging, but increased urease activity under FT aging. Comparison of the enzyme activities in the soils amended with biochars under constant moisture and accelerated aging conditions indicates WD aging significantly decreased the activities of catalase, invertase, and urease in all treatments, while FT aging significantly increased urease activity in all treatments. These findings suggest that biochars can stabilize Cd in alkaline soils under changing environmental conditions, although the activities of some soil enzymes could be negatively impacted. Abstract:Soil contamination with toxic metals and metalloids has become a major threat to global food security. Among various immobilization agents that can stabilize toxic metal(loid)s effectively, biochar is promising due to its ability to restore soil health. Yet the aging characteristics of biochar following its amendment in soil remain poorly explored. Therefore, this study used standard biochars to depict their aging effects on remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil. A total of 2304 observations were made, including 6 biochar feedstocks (rice husk, soft wood, oilseed rape straw, miscanthus straw, sewage sludge and wheat straw), 2 pyrolysis temperatures (550 degrees C, 700 degrees C), 8 metal(loid)s (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Pb), 4 aging methods (natural aging, freeze-thaw cycling, wet-dry cycling, chemical oxidation with H2O2), and 6 sampling intervals. Sewage sludge biochars exhibited the highest resistance to both artificial and natural aging, which may be related to the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups that favor metal complexation, and poorly-developed pore structures that limit the access of natural aging forces. A distinct relationship between ash and temperature was observed, where for high-ash biochars, an increase in pyrolysis temperature indicated lower resistance to aging, while for low-ash biochars, elevated pyrolysis temperature led to higher resistance. The aging behaviors of Cu and Sb were quite similar, which were both highly susceptible to chemical oxidation-induced dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release. Wet-dry cycling and freeze-thaw cycling revealed aging patterns that were similar to those of naturally aged soils as confirmed by cluster analysis. Lab aging data were then compared with existing biochar field aging results. Contrasting long-term immobilization performances were found in different studies, which were attributed to various causes associated with both biochar property and climate. The results of this study provide fresh insights into the long-term risks in the management of metal(loid)-contaminated agricultural soils.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the efficacy of biochar underwent different aging process including freeze-thaw cycling aging (FB), acidified aging (AB), and microbial aging (MB) on soil physicochemical properties and Cd passivation. The Cd-contaminated soil (3 mg·kg−1) amended with the three kinds of aging biochar (at 4% w:w) were subjected to 56-day incubation. The application of FB and MB in soil increased the soil pH (0.82–1.04, 0.27–9.36), CEC (1.06–2.53 cmol·kg−1, 1.66–2.59 cmol·kg−1), and organic matter content (2.28–4.67 g·kg−1, 3.70–5.48 g·kg−1). FB performed best in stabilizing Cd (17.06–23.65%). On the contrary, AB decreased the soil pH and CEC by 0.82–1.04 and 1.32–2.40 cmol·kg−1 and activated Cd by 11.6–19.24%. In conclusion, the efficacy of biochar on soil remediation and Cd passivation varied with aging method and cycle, and freeze-thaw treatment is an effective approach to improve the performance of biochar.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped biochar (NBC) is a green material for remediating heavy metal pollution, but it undergoes aging under natural conditions, affecting its interaction with heavy metals. The preparation conditions of NBC were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), and NBC was subjected to five different aging treatments to analyze the removal efficiency of Cd(II) and soil remediation capability before and after aging. The results indicated that NBC achieved optimal performance with a mass ratio of 5:2.43, an immersion time of 10.66 h, and a pyrolysis temperature of 900 °C. Aging diminished NBC's adsorption capacity for Cd(II) but did not change the main removal mechanism of monolayer chemical adsorption. Freeze-thaw cycles (FT), UV aging (L), and composite aging (U) treatments increased the proportion of bioavailable-Cd, and all aging treatments facilitated the conversion of potentially bioavailable-Cd to non-bioavailable-Cd. The application of NBC and five aged NBCs reduced the proportion of bioavailable-Cd in the soil through precipitation and complexation, increasing the proportion of non-bioavailable-Cd. Aging modifies the physicochemical properties of NBC, thus influencing soil characteristics and ultimately diminishing NBC's ability to passivate Cd in the soil. This study provides reference for the long-term application of biochar in heavy metal-contaminated environments.
Modified chicken manure biochar enhanced the adsorption for Cd2+ in aqueous and immobilization of Cd in contaminated agricultural soil

Abstract:Biochar is thought to be good sorbent for heavy metal and exploring ways to increase the efficiency of heavy metal adsorption by biochar is of great importance. Chicken manure biochar was modified with sulfur, hydroxyapatite and MnFe2O4 respectively. The properties and composition of the pristine and modified biochar was characterized. The pH and ash content of biochar was significantly increased after modification. Energy dispersive spectroscopy results showed that biochar modified with sulfur, hydroxyapatite and MnFe2O4 was successfully loaded on S, Ca/P and Fe/Mn respectively. The adsorption kinetic of Cd2+ absorption by pristine and modified biochar was better fitted by the pseudo second-order kinetic model, suggesting that the adsorption of Cd2+ on biochar followed the process of chemisorption. The Cd2+ adsorption isotherms of sulfur modified chicken manure biochar (SCMB), hydroxyapatite modified chicken manure biochar (HCMB) and MnFe2O4 modified chicken manure biochar (FMCMB) was better fitted by Freundlich model, while the Cd2+ adsorption by pristine chicken manure biochar (CMB) was well fitted by Langmuir model. The maximum Cd2+ adsorption capacity of SCMB, HCMB, FMCMB and CMB was 188.20, 111.53, 109.94 and 19.65 mg·g−1 respectively. Quantitative analysis of Cd2+ adsorption mechanism by biochar showed that the contribution of ion exchange for Cd2+ adsorption of CMB accounted for 58 %, while SCMB, HCMB and FMCMB decreased to only 12 %, 8 % and 4 % respectively. Meanwhile, the contribution of precipitation, complexion and metal-Cπ coordination for Cd2+ adsorption increased after modification. Pot experiment showed that application of SCMB significantly increased soil pH value, decreased the bioavailable Cd in soil and Cd uptake by brassica chinensis shoots, suggesting that SCMB can be a potential material for the safety use of Cd contaminated agricultural soil.

Abstract:In this study, a combination method of freeze-thaw cycle, dry-wet cycle, and chemical agings was used to investigate the aging effect of MgO-modified palygorskite/biochar composite (MPBC) in soil, and its immobilization capacity on Cd under aging. The immobilization mechanisms of MPBC for Cd were explored through several characterizations and DFT calculations. The results showed that MPBC effectively reduced the activate state of Cd by 56.63% at 8 mg/kg Cd concentration. Additionally, MPBC treatment improved physicochemical properties of soil, notably increasing soil pH by 0.26-0.64 units, thereby facilitating Cd immobilization. The predominant mechanism underlying Cd immobilization by MPBC involved the Cd-π complexation, ions exchange, precipitation, and complexation of surface functional groups, including C-O and C=O, with Cd. The citric acid emerged as a milder oxidizing agent combined with freeze-thaw and dry-wet aging conducive to studying the aging effect of MPBC. The dynamic calculation showed that MgO played an important role in the Cd adsorption, with a maximum probability function of 18.35 for Cd. Moreover, within the temperature range of 20 °C-30 °C, the distance between MPBC and Cd was the closest. This study provides a new idea for artificial aging of biochar and a practical method for the remediation of Cd pollution in soil.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) in wastewater, including Cd, Pb and Ni, were toxic and needed urgent treatment. Using biochar as an adsorbent to purify HM-containing wastewater is effective. However, there are few studies on screening of high-efficiency modifier and comparing their adsorption capacity. Herein, three different modification methods, including heteroatomic doping (urea), alkali hydroxide (NaOH) and chemical oxidation (KMnO 4 ), were used to improve removal ability of HMs by biochar. The difference in impregnation solution resulted in completely differences in microscopic morphology, physicochemical properties and adsorption efficiency of modified biochar. Biochar modified by KMnO 4 (Mn-BC) had significantly better adsorption capacity for Cd, Pb and Ni, reaching 46.40 mg/g, 80.20 mg/g and 18.65 mg/g, respectively, compared with raw biochar and other modification biochar, which might be due to the highest surface area and pore volume, lower zeta potential and loaded MnO x onto Mn-BC surface. Chemical and monolayer adsorption was dominant during adsorption of HMs. After adsorption, HMs were detected on the Mn-BC surface in the form of carbonate, hydroxide or oxide. Mineral precipitation and cation exchange were the dominant mechanisms during adsorption, accounting for 17.4%-41.8% and 43.0%-77.2%, respectively. Moreover, according to the correlation analysis, the increase in biochar pH, pore volume and degrees of carbonization were beneficial for HM adsorption. Mn-BC could adapt to a wider pH range (pH=4–6), and its adsorption capacity would not be interfered by coexisting ions (50 mg/L). This research proved advantages of biochar with KMnO 4 modification and highlighted its application in treatment of wastewater contaminated with multiple HMs.
