Abstract:Snakebite envenoming is a major global public health concern for which improved therapies are urgently needed. The antigenic diversity present in snake venom toxins from various species presents a considerable challenge to the development of a universal antivenom. Here, we used a synthetic human antibody library to find and develop an antibody that neutralizes long-chain three-finger α-neurotoxins produced by numerous medically relevant snakes. Our antibody bound diverse toxin variants with high affinity, blocked toxin binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in vitro, and protected mice from lethal venom challenge. Structural analysis of the antibody-toxin complex revealed a binding mode that mimics the receptor-toxin interaction. The overall workflow presented is generalizable for the development of antibodies that target conserved epitopes among antigenically diverse targets, and it offers a promising framework for the creation of a monoclonal antibody–based universal antivenom to treat snakebite envenoming.

Abstract:Snakebite accidents, neglected tropical diseases per the WHO, pose a significant public health threat due to their severity and frequency. Envenomation by Bothrops genus snakes leads to severe manifestations due to proteolytic enzymes. While the antibothropic serum produced by the Butantan Institute saves lives, its efficacy is limited as it fails to neutralize certain serine proteases. Hence, developing new-generation antivenoms, like monoclonal antibodies, is crucial. This study aimed to explore the inhibitory potential of synthetic peptides homologous to the CDR3 regions of a monoclonal antibody targeting a snake venom thrombin-like enzyme (SVTLE) from B. atrox venom. Five synthetic peptides were studied, all stable against hydrolysis by venoms and serine proteases. Impressively, four peptides demonstrated uncompetitive SVTLE inhibition, with Ki values ranging from 10−6 to 10−7 M. These findings underscore the potential of short peptides homologous to CDR3 regions in blocking snake venom toxins, suggesting their promise as the basis for new-generation antivenoms. Thus, this study offers potential advancements in combatting snakebites, addressing a critical public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions.

Abstract:The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is one of the most feared snake species of the African savanna. It has a potent, fast-acting neurotoxic venom comprised of dendrotoxins and α-neurotoxins associated with high fatality in untreated victims. Current antivenoms are both scarce on the African continent and present a number of drawbacks as they are derived from the plasma of hyper-immunized large mammals. Here, we describe the development of an experimental recombinant antivenom by a combined toxicovenomics and phage display approach. The recombinant antivenom is based on a cocktail of fully human immunoglobulin G (IgG) monoclonal antibodies capable of neutralizing dendrotoxin-mediated neurotoxicity of black mamba whole venom in a rodent model. Our results show the potential use of fully human monoclonal IgGs against animal toxins and the first use of oligoclonal human IgG mixtures against experimental snakebite envenoming.

Abstract:The Japan-specific sequence type (ST) clones, as well as several major epidemic-prone clones such as ST-32, have been identified previously among Neisseria meningitidis isolates in Japan. In this study, the infectious properties of various ST clones, including the two common Japan-specific ones, were examined and compared by in vitro infection assays using human endothelial and epithelial cell lines. The known invasive clones, as well as the Japan-specific ST-2032 strains that were frequently isolated from patients, exhibited high infectious abilities in adherence and invasion. In contrast, the Japan-specific ST-2046 and ST-198 strains, both of which were frequently isolated from carriers in Japan, were less efficient in adherence and invasion. The expression of the bacterial surface molecules such as pilin, Opc, Opa and PilC, and the lipooligosaccharide structure, did not differ between disease-associated and carrier-associated isolates. These results suggest that in vitro infection assays may discriminate between disease-associated (patient-dominant) and carrier-associated (carrier-dominant) meningococcal ST clones. The ST-2032 clone showed the highest infectious activity in vitro, suggesting that it may possess some unidentified factors necessary for the infectious ability that were not present in the ST-2046 clone with the lowest infectious ability.

Abstract:Abstract Improved therapies are needed against snakebite envenoming, which kills and permanently disables thousands of people each year. Recently developed neutralizing monoclonal antibodies against several snake toxins have shown promise in preclinical rodent models. Here, we use phage display technology to discover a human monoclonal antibody and show that this antibody causes antibody-dependent enhancement of toxicity (ADET) of myotoxin II from the venomous pit viper, Bothrops asper , in a mouse model of envenoming that mimics a snakebite. While clinical ADET related to snake venom has not yet been reported in humans, this report of ADET of a toxin from the animal kingdom highlights the necessity of assessing even well-known antibody formats in representative preclinical models to evaluate their therapeutic utility against toxins or venoms. This is essential to avoid potential deleterious effects as exemplified in the present study.

Abstract:Snakebite envenoming remains a devastating and neglected tropical disease, claiming over 100,000 lives annually and causing severe complications and long-lasting disabilities for many more1,2. Three-finger toxins (3FTx) are highly toxic components of elapid snake venoms that can cause diverse pathologies, including severe tissue damage3 and inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) resulting in life-threatening neurotoxicity4. Currently, the only available treatments for snakebite consist of polyclonal antibodies derived from the plasma of immunized animals, which have high cost and limited efficacy against 3FTxs5,6,7. Here, we use deep learning methods to de novo design proteins to bind short- and long-chain α-neurotoxins and cytotoxins from the 3FTx family. With limited experimental screening, we obtain protein designs with remarkable thermal stability, high binding affinity, and near-atomic level agreement with the computational models. The designed proteins effectively neutralize all three 3FTx sub-families in vitro and protect mice from a lethal neurotoxin challenge. Such potent, stable, and readily manufacturable toxin-neutralizing proteins could provide the basis for safer, cost-effective, and widely accessible next-generation antivenom therapeutics. Beyond snakebite, our computational design methodology should help democratize therapeutic discovery, particularly in resource-limited settings, by substantially reducing costs and resource requirements for development of therapies to neglected tropical diseases.

Abstract:Abstract Snakebite envenoming continues to claim many lives across the globe, necessitating the development of improved therapies. To this end, broadly-neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies may possess advantages over current plasma-derived antivenoms by offering superior safety and high neutralization capacity. Here, we report the establishment of a pipeline based on phage display technology for the discovery and optimization of high affinity broadly-neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies. This approach yielded a recombinant human antibody with superior broadly-neutralizing capacities in vitro and in vivo against different long-chain α-neurotoxins from elapid snakes. This antibody prevents lethality induced by Naja kaouthia whole venom at an unprecedented low molar ratio of one antibody per toxin and prolongs the survival of mice injected with Dendroaspis polylepis or Ophiophagus hannah whole venoms.

Abstract:Snakebites profoundly impact the rural population of tropical nations, leading to significant socio-economic repercussions. Polyvalent antivenom (PAV) therapy faces several limitations, including intra-specific variations and poor efficacy against some major toxins and low molecular mass, poorly immunogenic toxins, which contribute to increased mortality and morbidity rates. Innovative strategies for developing novel antivenoms are continuously explored to address these challenges. The present study focuses on designing of 17 epitope-string toxin-specific peptide immunogens from pharmacologically active major and/or poorly immunogenic toxins (snake venom metalloprotease, Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor, phospholipase A2, three-finger toxin) from the venom of the 'Big Four' venomous snakes and Naja kaouthia (NK) in India. These custom peptide antibodies demonstrated robust immuno-reactivity against the venoms 'Big Four' and NK. When these antibodies were supplemented with commercial PAV at a defined ratio (formulated polyvalent antivenom or FPAV), it significantly enhanced the neutralization of snake venom enzymes and in vivo neutralization of lethality and pharmacological activities such as haemorrhage, necrosis, pro-coagulant, defibrinogenation, and myotoxicity of 'Big Four' and NK venoms compared to PAV in mice. The present study highlights a promising strategy for developing next-generation antivenoms using synthetic peptide-based immunogens, offering a targeted approach to address the limitations of current antivenom therapy.

Abstract:Snakebite is a major global health concern, for which antivenom remains the only approved treatment to neutralise the harmful effects of the toxins. However, some medically important toxins are poorly immunogenic, resulting in reduced efficacy of the final product. Boosting the immunogenicity of these toxins in the commercial antivenom immunising mixtures could be an effective strategy to improve the final dose efficacy, and displaying snake antigens on Virus-like particles (VLPs) is one method for this. However, despite some applications in the field of snakebite, VLPs have yet to be explored in methods that could be practical at an antivenom manufacturing scale. Here we describe the utilisation of a "plug and play" VLP system to display immunogenic linear peptide epitopes from three finger toxins (3FTxs) and generate anti-toxin antibodies. Rabbits were immunised with VLPs displaying individual consensus linear epitopes and their antibody responses were characterised by immunoassay. Of the three experimental consensus sequences, two produced antibodies capable of recognising the consensus peptides, whilst only one of these could also recognise native whole toxins. Further characterisation of antibodies raised against this peptide demonstrated a sub-class specific response, and that these were able to elicit partially neutralising antibody responses, resulting in increased survival times in a murine snakebite envenoming model.
Development and characterization of nanobody against envenomation by Naja naja oxiana

Abstract:Snakebites are considered a significant health issue. Current antivenoms contain polyclonal antibodies, which vary in their specificity against different venom components. Development and characterization of next generation antivenoms including nanobodies against Naja naja oxiana was the main aim of this study. Crude venom was injected into the Sephadex G50 filtration gel chromatography column and then toxic fractions were obtained. Then the corresponding fraction was injected into the HPLC column and the toxic peaks were identified. N. naja oxiana venom was injected into a camel and specific nanobodies screening was performed against the toxic peak using phage display technique. The obtained results showed that among the 12 clones obtained, N24 nanobody was capable of neutralizing P1, the most toxic peak obtained from HPLC chromatography. The molecular weight of P1 was measured with a mass spectrometer and was found to be about seven kDa. The results of the neutralization test of crude N. naja oxiana venom with N24 nanobody showed that 250 μg of recombinant nanobody could neutralize the toxic effects of 20 μg equivalent to LD50 × 10 of crude venom in mice. The findings indicate the potential of the developed nanobody to serve as a novel antivenom therapy.
A pan-specific antiserum produced by a novel immunization strategy shows a high spectrum of neutralization against neurotoxic snake venoms

Abstract:Abstract Snakebite envenomation is a neglected tropical disease of high mortality and morbidity largely due to insufficient supply of effective and affordable antivenoms. Snake antivenoms are mostly effective against the venoms used in their production. It is thus crucial that effective and affordable antivenom(s) with wide para-specificity, capable of neutralizing the venoms of a large number of snakes, be produced. Here we studied the pan-specific antiserum prepared previously by a novel immunization strategy involving the exposure of horses to a ‘diverse toxin repertoire’ consisting of 12 neurotoxic Asian snake toxin fractions/ venoms from six species. This antiserum was previously shown to exhibit wide para-specificity by neutralizing 11 homologous and 16 heterologous venoms from Asia and Africa. We now show that the antiserum can neutralize 9 out of 10 additional neurotoxic venoms. Altogether, 36 snake venoms belonging to 10 genera from 4 continents were neutralized by the antiserum. Toxin profiles previously generated using proteomic techniques of these 36 venoms identified α-neurotoxins, β-neurotoxins, and cytotoxins as predominant toxins presumably neutralized by the antiserum. The bases for the wide para-specificity of the antiserum are discussed. These findings indicate that it is feasible to generate antivenoms of wide para-specificity against elapid neurotoxic venoms from different regions in the world and raises the possibility of a universal neurotoxic antivenom. This should reduce the mortality resulting from neurotoxic snakebite envenomation.

Abstract:Snakebite envenomation inflicts a high burden of mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Antivenoms are the mainstay in the therapy of envenomation, and there is an urgent need to develop antivenoms of broad neutralizing efficacy for this region. The venoms used as immunogens to manufacture snake antivenoms are normally selected considering their medical importance and availability. Additionally, their ability to induce antibody responses with high neutralizing capability should be considered, an issue that involves the immunization scheme and the animal species being immunized. Using the lethality neutralization assay in mice, we compared the intrageneric neutralization scope of antisera generated by immunization of horses with monospecific, bispecific/monogeneric, and polyspecific/monogeneric immunogens formulated with venoms of Bitis spp., Echis spp., Dendroaspis spp., spitting Naja spp. or non-spitting Naja spp. It was found that the antisera raised by all the immunogens were able to neutralize the homologous venoms and, with a single exception, the heterologous congeneric venoms (considering spitting and non-spitting Naja separately). In general, the polyspecific antisera of Bitis spp, Echis spp, and Dendroaspis spp gave the best neutralization profile against venoms of these genera. For spitting Naja venoms, there were no significant differences in the neutralizing ability between monospecific, bispecific and polyspecific antisera. A similar result was obtained in the case of non-spitting Naja venoms, except that polyspecific antiserum was more effective against the venoms of N . melanoleuca and N . nivea as compared to the monospecific antiserum. The use of polyspecific immunogens is the best alternative to produce monogeneric antivenoms with wide neutralizing coverage against venoms of sub-Saharan African snakes of the Bitis , Echis , Naja (non-spitting) and Dendroaspis genera. On the other hand, a monospecific immunogen composed of venom of Naja nigricollis is suitable to produce a monogeneric antivenom with wide neutralizing coverage against venoms of spitting Naja spp. These findings can be used in the design of antivenoms of wide neutralizing scope for sub-Saharan Africa. Parenteral administration of antivenoms is the core of the current treatment of snakebite envenomations, and there is an urgent need to produce antivenoms of wide neutralizing efficacy for sub-Saharan Africa. The active substance of antivenoms are antibodies (or antibody fragments) purified from plasma of horses or sheep immunized by the repeated injection of snake venoms. Generally, these antibodies can neutralize the venoms used as immunogens and other related venoms. Normally, the venoms used as immunogens are selected considering their medical importance and availability. To complement these criteria with information regarding the immunogenicity of venoms, we compared monospecific, bispecific/monogeneric, and polyspecific/monogeneric antisera towards venoms of Bitis spp., Echis spp., Dendroaspis spp., spitting Naja spp. or non-spitting Naja spp, regarding their intrageneric neutralization scope, evaluated by the lethality neutralization assay in mice. We found that the polyspecific antisera against venoms of Bitis spp, Echis spp, Dendroaspis spp, or non-spitting Naja gave the best neutralization profile. On the other hand, the monospecific, bispecific and polyspecific antisera towards venoms of spitting Naja venoms showed a similar performance. This information suggests that polyspecific immunogens could be the best alternative to produce antivenoms with the widest neutralizing coverage against sub-Saharan African snake venoms.

Abstract:Background and Objective: Snakebite envenoming is a serious public health issue causing more than 135,000 annual deaths worldwide. Naja naja oxiana is one of the most clinically important venomous snakes in Iran and Central Asia. Conventional animal-derived polyclonal antibodies are the major treatment of snakebite envenoming. Characterization of venom components helps to pinpoint the toxic protein responsible for clinical manifestations in victims, which aids us in developing efficient antivenoms with minimal side effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the major lethal protein of Naja naja oxiana by top-down proteomics. Methods: Venom proteomic profiling was performed using gel filtration (GF), reversed-phase (RP) chromatography, and intact mass spectrometry. The toxicity of GF-, and RP-eluted fractions was analyzed in BALB/c mice. The rabbit polyclonal antisera were produced against crude venom, GF fraction V (FV), and RP peak 1 (CTXP) and applied in neutralization assays. Results: Toxicity studies in BALB/c identified FV as the major toxic fraction of venom. Subsequently, RP separation of FV resulted in eight peaks, of which peak 1, referred to as "CTXP" (cobra toxin peptide), was identified as the major lethal protein. In vivo neutralization assays using rabbit antisera showed that polyclonal antibodies raised against FV and CTXP are capable of neutralizing at least 2-LD50s of crude venom, FV, and CTXP in all tested mice. Conclusion: Surprisingly, the Anti-CTXP antibody could neutralize 8-LD50 of the CTXP peptide. These results identified CTXP (a 7 kDa peptide) as a potential target for the development of novel efficient antivenom agents.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Naja atra , the Chinese cobra, is a major cause of snake envenomation in Asia, causing hundreds of thousands of clinical incidents annually. The current treatment, horse serum-derived antivenom, has unpredictable side effects and presents manufacturing challenges. This study focused on developing new-generation snake venom antidotes by using microbial phage display technology to derive nanobodies from an alpaca immunized with attenuated N. atra venom. Following confirmation of the immune response in the alpaca, we amplified V H H genes from isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells and constructed a phage display V H H library of 1.0 × 10 7 transformants. After four rounds of biopanning, the enriched phages exhibited increased binding activity to N. atra venom. Four nanobody clones with high binding affinities were selected: aNAH1, aNAH6, aNAH7, and aNAH9. Specificity testing against venom from various snake species, including two Southeast Asian cobra species, revealed nanobodies specific to the genus Naja . An in vivo mouse venom neutralization assay demonstrated that all nanobodies prolonged mouse survival and aNAH6 protected 66.6% of the mice from the lethal dosage. These findings highlight the potential of phage display-derived nanobodies as valuable antidotes for N. atra venom, laying the groundwork for future applications in snakebite treatment. IMPORTANCE Chinese cobra venom bites present a formidable medical challenge, and current serum treatments face unresolved issues. Our research applied microbial phage display technology to obtain a new, effective, and cost-efficient treatment approach. Despite interest among scientists in utilizing this technology to screen alpaca antibodies against toxins, the available literature is limited. This study makes a significant contribution by introducing neutralizing antibodies that are specifically tailored to Chinese cobra venom. We provide a comprehensive and unbiased account of the antibody construction process, accompanied by thorough testing of various nanobodies and an assessment of cross-reactivity with diverse snake venoms. These nanobodies represent a promising avenue for targeted antivenom development that bridges microbiology and biotechnology to address critical health needs.

Abstract:The Black mamba, D. polylepis, is one of the many venomous snakes found in Kenya, and known to account for some snakebite incidents. The Kenyan Ministry of Health data reveals annual 15,000 snakebites occurrences. Also, 1 in 15 people in Kenya gets bitten by a snake, and tragically, 1 in 147 of these individuals die of snakebite yearly. Traditionally, antivenoms for treatment are produced from horse or sheep but have complicated and expensive production issues. Alternative production approaches, such as using IgY antibodies derived from chicken egg yolks, may overcome disadvantages with traditional antivenom manufacturing techniques. In this current study, D. polylepis specific IgY polyclonal antibodies were purified from the egg yolks of chickens immunized with D. polylepis venom. These antibodies were subsequently assessed for their in-vivo neutralizing capacity vis-à-vis commercial antivenoms, PANAF-Premium and VINS. The IgY antibodies were purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and affinity-chromatography, with quality and specificity determined by SDS-PAGE and ELISA. The LD50 of D. polylepis was found to be 0.54 mg/kg in chicks, and 0.34 mg/kg in mice, respectively. Pool of extracted IgY yielded 2.8 mg/mL concentration. Purified IgY under non-reducing and reducing conditions on SDS-PAGE exhibited a single-protein band of about 183 kDa and two bands (67 kDa and 25 kDa), respectively. The minimum-edematogenic dose was 0.05 μg. Anti-D. polylepis IgY antibodies and two antivenoms demonstrated the capacity to neutralize the toxic activities of D. polylepis venom. This study confirms a successful IgY generation against Black mamba venom for the first time, and observed toxic effects of the venom as well as neutralizing capacity of antivenoms.
A consensus recombinant elapid long-chain α-neurotoxin and how protein folding matters for antibody recognition and neutralization of elapid venoms

Abstract:Antivenoms are essential in the treatment of the neurotoxicity caused by elapid snakebites. However, there are elapid neurotoxins, e.g., long-chain α-neurotoxins (also known as long-chain three-finger toxins) that are barely neutralized by commercial elapid antivenoms; so, recombinant elapid neurotoxins could be an alternative or complements for improving antibody production against the lethal long-chain α-neurotoxins from elapid venoms. This work communicates the expression of a recombinant long-chain α-neurotoxin, named HisrLcNTx or rLcNTx, which based on the most lethal long-chain α-neurotoxins reported, was constructed de novo. The gene of rLcNTx was synthesized and introduced into the expression vector pQE30, which contains a proteolytic cleavage region for exscinding the mature protein, and His residues in tandem for affinity purification. The cloned pQE30/rLcNTx was transfected into Escherichia coli Origami cells to express rLcNTx. After expression, it was found in inclusion bodies, and folded in multiple Cys-Cys structural isoforms. To observe the capability of those isoforms to generate antibodies against native long-chain α-neurotoxins, groups of rabbits were immunized with different cocktails of Cys-Cys rLcNTx isoforms. In vitro, and in vivo analyses revealed that rabbit antibodies raised against different rLcNTx Cys-Cys isoforms were able to recognize pure native long-chain α-neurotoxins and their elapid venoms, but they were unable to neutralize bungarotoxin, a classical long-chain α-neurotoxin, and other elapid venoms. The rLcNTx Cys-Cys isoform 2 was the immunogen that produced the best neutralizing antibodies in rabbits. Yet to neutralize the elapid venoms from the black mamba Dendroaspis polylepis, and the coral shield cobra Aspidelaps lubricus, it was required to use two types of antibodies, the ones produced using rLcNTx Cys-Cys isoform 2 and antibodies produced using short-chain α-neurotoxins. Expression of recombinant elapid neurotoxins as immunogens could be an alternative to improve elapid antivenoms; nevertheless, recombinant elapid neurotoxins must be well-folded to be used as immunogens for obtaining neutralizing antibodies.

Abstract:Objective: Naja ashei is a snake of medical importance in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Little is known about the enzymatic (snake venom phospholipases A2; svPLA2's) and toxic (lethal) activities of N. ashei venom and crucially, the safety and capacity of available antivenom to neutralize these effects. This study aimed to determine the enzymatic and toxic activities of N. ashei venom and the capacity of Indian and Mexican manufactured antivenoms to neutralize these effects. The protein content of the venom and the test antivenoms were also evaluated. A 12-point log concentration-response curve (0.5-22.5 µg/mL) was generated on an agarose-egg yolk model to predict the svPLA2 activity of the venom. The toxicity profiles of the venom and antivenoms were evaluated in the brine shrimp lethality assay. Lowry's method was used for protein estimation. Results: Low and intermediate concentrations of the venom exhibited similar svPLA2 activities. The same was true for concentrations > 15 µg/mL. Intermediate and high doses of the venom exhibited similar mortalities in brine shrimp and test antivenoms were generally non-toxic but poorly neutralized svPLA2 activity. Mexican manufactured antivenom had lower protein content but neutralized venom-induced brine shrimp lethality much more effectively than Indian manufactured antivenom.
Standard Quality Characteristics and Efficacy of a New Third-Generation Antivenom Developed in Colombia Covering Micrurus spp. Venoms

Abstract:In Colombia, Micrurus snakebites are classified as severe according to the national clinical care guidelines and must be treated with specific antivenoms. Unfortunately, these types of antivenoms are scarce in certain areas of the country and are currently reported as an unavailable vital medicine. To address this issue, La Universidad de Antioquia, through its spin-off Tech Life Saving, is leading a project to develop third-generation polyvalent freeze-dried antivenom. The goal is to ensure access to this therapy, especially in rural and dispersed areas. This project aims to evaluate the physicochemical and preclinical parameters (standard quality characteristics) of a lab-scale anti-elapid antivenom batch. The antivenom is challenged against the venoms of several Micrurus species, including M. mipartitus, M. dumerilii, M. ancoralis, M. dissoleucus, M. lemniscatus, M. medemi, M. spixii, M. surinamensis, and M. isozonus, following the standard quality characteristics set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The antivenom demonstrates an appearance consistent with standards, 100% solubility within 4 min and 25 s, an extractable volume of 10.39 mL, a pH of 6.04, an albumin concentration of 0.377 mg/mL (equivalent to 1.22% of total protein), and a protein concentration of 30.97 mg/mL. Importantly, it maintains full integrity of its F(ab′)2 fragments and exhibits purity over 98.5%. Furthermore, in mice toxicity evaluations, doses up to 15 mg/mouse show no toxic effects. The antivenom also demonstrates a significant recognition pattern against Micrurus venoms rich in phospholipase A2 (PLA2) content, as observed in M. dumerilii, M. dissoleucus, and M. isozonus. The effective dose 50 (ED50) indicates that a single vial (10 mL) can neutralize 2.33 mg of M. mipartitus venom and 3.99 mg of M. dumerilii venom. This new anti-elapid third-generation polyvalent and freeze-dried antivenom meets the physicochemical parameters set by the WHO and the regulators in Colombia. It demonstrates significant efficacy in neutralizing the venom of the most epidemiologically important Micrurus species in Colombia. Additionally, it recognizes seven other species of Micrurus venom with a higher affinity for venoms exhibiting PLA2 toxins. Fulfilling these parameters represents the first step toward proposing a new pharmacological alternative for treating snakebites in Colombia, particularly in dispersed rural areas, given that this antivenom is formulated as a freeze-dried product.
