Abstract:Wearable devices for health monitoring like electrocardiography(ECG) use commercial Ag/AgCl electrodes to detect signals, but they can cause skin irrtation and lead unreliable data during prolonged usage. This work shows alternative ECG electrodes, we obtained these electrodes using Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogel and commercially flexible materials. 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) could increase the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and make the formation of hydrogel in commerically flexible materials at a short time. We validated the impedance and ECG signlas of these flexible electrodes, and found the optimized one(wound dressing) compared to commercial electrode and got the equivalent circuit model of it. Furthermore, we designed the ECG flexible printed circuit matching the optimized electrode to form a patch, and used the patch as wearable device to detect the ECG signals of volunteer in static condition and got the variation of heart rate value in dynamic condition. The interface impedance of our ECG electrode was small compared to commercial electrodes and the ECG signals were similar with them. The results of on-body testing shown our electrode with FPC could work as wearable devices for health monitoring in both static and dynamic conditions. These results suggest that our electrode could be alternated commercial electrode due to its high conductivity, biocompatibility, flexibility, recyclability and low price.

Abstract:We designed an inexpensive user computer interface for helping the disabled persons to communicate with their caretakers, which is based on EOG (electro-oculography) signals rather than the very expensive reflectance based methods. EOG signals of different eye movement patterns are analyzed with the LOS guiding setting constructed ourselves. An effective eye movement pattern is found to control the computer. Testing conducted on 12 subjects show that this system is remarkably accurate, easy to operate and reliable.

Abstract:The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a critical physiological indicator that contains abundant information about human heart activities. It is a challenge to measure ECG signals, which is susceptible to interference from various types of noise. Generally, the signals are often detected by wet electrodes needing moist conductive gel to reduce the skin-electrode interface impedance, which could cause discomfort of the user and even lead to distortion of the signals due to the drying of conductive gel. In this study, a non-contact electrode that does not need any conductive gel nor ohmic connection with the skin was presented to apply high-quality physiological signals. It was made up of flexible printed circuits materials and the surface signal can be obtained by the principle of capacitive coupling. The results showed that the proposed non-contact electrode could acquire high-quality ECG compared to wet Ag/AgCl electrode. The correlation coefficient of the ECG waveforms was as high as 98.10% in the quiet state and 90.80% in the motion state between standard electrode and our non-contact electrode. The electrode was capable of obtaining good ECG signals even when the subject was walking at a speed up to 6 km/h. This pilot study suggests that the proposed flexible non-contact electrode would be a potential tool for long-term healthcare monitoring for patients and physiological signal measurements for athletes.

Abstract:For recent years, the heavy and prolonged use of electronic devices has resulted in a growing population of dry eye syndrome especially for younger individuals. Due to a lack of public awareness, the rate of seeking medical consultations remains relatively low. The advancement in smart wearable technology has opened up numerous possibilities for early observation of the symptoms such as frequent eye blinking and implementation of subsequent healthcare. In this study, we present a personalized monitoring-feedback system based on a self-powered, wearable, stretchable triboelectric sensor and matching counting module, image display module, and human-computer interaction module. The system is capable of detecting subtle biomechanical signals in the human body with exceptional sensitivity, such as eye blinking. The electronically processed electrical signals can activate a coupled counter and transmit information to mobile devices through the Internet of Things (IoT). This enables automatic processing and interaction with users, providing reminders and correction information regarding eye-related behavior. Through animal and volunteer experiments, we validate the accurate identification of eye-related behavior and the provision of appropriate feedback. This work proposes a promising technological approach for monitoring, early warning and management of dry eye syndrome.

Abstract:Wearables have emerged as an increasingly promising interactive platform, imbuing the human body with always-available computational capabilities. This unlocks a wide range of applications, including discreet information access, health monitoring, fitness, and fashion. However, unlike previous platforms, wearable electronics require structural conformity, must be comfortable for the wearer, and should be soft, elastic, and aesthetically appealing. We envision a future where electronics can be temporarily attached to the body (like bandages or party masks), but in functional and aesthetically pleasing ways. Towards this vision, we introduce ElectroDermis, a fabrication approach that simplifies the creation of highly-functional and stretchable wearable electronics that are conformal and fully untethered by discretizing rigid circuit boards into individual components. These individual components are wired together using stretchable electrical wiring and assembled on a spandex blend fabric, to provide high functionality in a robust form-factor that is reusable. We describe our system in detail- including our fabrication parameters and its operational limits-which we hope researchers and practitioners can leverage. We describe a series of example applications that illustrate the feasibility and utility of our system. Overall, we believe ElectroDermis offers a complementary approach to wearable electronics-one that places value on the notion of impermanence (i.e., unlike tattoos and implants), better conforming to the dynamic nature of the human body.

Abstract:Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a critical physiological indicator that contains abundant information about human heart activities. However, it is a kind of weak low-frequency signal, which is easy to be interfered by various noises. Therefore, wearable biosensors (WBS) technique is introduced to overcome this challenge. A flexible non-contact electrode is proposed for wearable biosensors (WBS) system, which is made up of flexible printed circuits materials, and can monitor the ECG signals during exercise for a long time. It uses the principle of capacitive coupling to obtain high-quality signals, and reduces the impact of external noise through active shielding; The results showed that the proposed non-contact electrode was equivalent to a medical wet electrode. The correlation coefficient was as high as 99.70 ± 0.30% when the subject was resting, while it was as high as 97.53 ± 1.80% during exercise. High-quality ECG could still be collected at subjects walking at 7 km/h. This study suggested that the proposed flexible non-contact electrode would be a potential tool for wearable biosensors for medical application on long-term monitoring of patients' health and provide athletes with physiological signal measurements.

Abstract:Physiological signals such as electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG) could objectively reflect the functioning status of the human body and the monitoring of these signals is useful for various applications including brain computer interface, neurological rehabilitation, and long‐term healthcare monitoring. Currently, wet electrodes are commonly used for the monitoring of physiological signals and it usually requires conductive gels to achieve high quality recordings, which may cause discomfort to the patient and increase risk of skin allergy. In this study, a noncontact electrode made of a multilayer flexible printed circuit without any rigid electronic components on either side was proposed. The flexible noncontact electrode was capable of measuring physiological signals without any direct skin contact or conductive gels and could be bent freely according to the local shape to achieve optimal capacitive coupling with the skin surface. The results showed that the proposed flexible noncontact electrode could obtain different physiological signals with good quality compared with traditional wet electrodes. The ECG signals could be reliably measured with different insulation materials between the skin and the electrode, with up to five layers of insulation materials. It was also found that flexible electrode could achieve higher signal‐to‐noise ratio and therefore had better performance than traditional hard printed circuit board electrode, when measuring EMG signal through the cloth and EEG signals over the hair. The proposed method of this study might provide a novel and comfortable way to measure physiological signals for neurological rehabilitation, wearable devices, and other healthcare applications.

Abstract:Bio-signals including electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration rate, motion-related signals, plantar pressure distribution are important for monitoring and assessing a person’s health status. Via some of the bio-signals, some diseases or abnormalities such as cardiovascular diseases or a human fall can be detected. However, the traditional health monitoring systems have limitations as they are expensive, not-easy-to-use, stationary, inconvenient and uncomfortable to use. It is required an advanced solution for dealing with the limitations while maintaining a high quality of services such as high-quality signals and accuracy. Therefore, we present a novel wireless wearable health monitoring system in this paper. The system consists of an upper limb device and a lower limb device using flexible materials such as polydimethylsiloxane-graphene compound and textile materials for collecting different ECG, EMG, respiration rate, motion-related signals, plantar pressure distribution. The complete system is implemented, tested and verified in a clinical environment in a hospital. The results show that the system can obtain high-quality bio-signals and can be a potential application for both home-care and hospital-care.

Abstract:Measurements based on optics offer a wide range of unprecedented opportunities in the biological application due to the noninvasive or non-destructive detection. Wearable skin-like optoelectronic devices, capable of deforming with the human skin, play significant roles in future biomedical engineering such as clinical diagnostics or daily healthcare. However, the detected signals based on light intensity are very sensitive to the light path. The performance degradation of the wearable devices occurs due to device deformation or motion artifact. In this work, we propose the optical difference in the frequency domain of signals for suppressing the disturbance generated by wearable device deformation or motion artifact during the photoplethysmogram (PPG) monitoring. The signal processing is simulated with different input waveforms for analyzing the performance of this method. Then we design and fabricate a wearable optoelectronic device to monitor the PPG signal in the condition of motion artifact and use the optical difference in the frequency domain of signals to suppress irregular disturbance. The proposed method reduced the average error in heart rate estimation from 13.04 beats per minute (bpm) to 3.41 bpm in motion and deformation situations. These consequences open up a new prospect for improving the performance of the wearable optoelectronic devices and precise medical monitoring in the future.

Abstract:Physiological signals such as ECG and EMG are closely related with human health and a long term monitoring of the physiological signals would be beneficial to detect possible disorders at the early stage. The wet electrodes currently used in the clinics require adhesives gels to record high-quality signals, which might cause discomfort of the patients and introduce some risk of skin allergy. Non-contact capacitive electrodes that can be operated without skin contact have been developed in previous studies, but these electrodes were rigid with electronic components on the back, which might not be an optimal solution for long term healthcare monitoring. In this study, a flexible non-contact electrode without any electronic components on both sides was designed for the long term acquisition of bioelectrical signals to maximize subject comfort. The flexible electrode was made up of multi-layer flexible printed circuits (FPC) materials and could be bent according to the local shape to achieve better non-contact capacitive coupling with the skin. The performance of the proposed flexible electrode was compared with that of the conventional wet electrodes in different signal recording conditions. The results showed that the proposed non-contact flexible electrode can capture high quality ECG and EMG signals, and its performance was comparable to the commonly used wet electrodes. This study might provide a reliable solution with great patient comfort for the long-term monitoring of biological signals.

Abstract:Recent advancements in head-mounted wearable technology are revolutionizing the field of biopotential measurement, but the integration of these technologies into practical, user-friendly devices remains challenging due to issues with design intrusiveness, comfort, and data privacy. To address these challenges, this paper presents GAPSES, a novel smart glasses platform designed for unobtrusive, comfortable, and secure acquisition and processing of electroencephalography (EEG) and electrooculography (EOG) signals. We introduce a direct electrode-electronics interface with custom fully dry soft electrodes to enhance comfort for long wear. An integrated parallel ultra-low-power RISC-V processor (GAP9, Greenwaves Technologies) processes data at the edge, thereby eliminating the need for continuous data streaming through a wireless link, enhancing privacy, and increasing system reliability in adverse channel conditions. We demonstrate the broad applicability of the designed prototype through validation in a number of EEG-based interaction tasks, including alpha waves, steady-state visual evoked potential analysis, and motor movement classification. Furthermore, we demonstrate an EEG-based biometric subject recognition task, where we reach a sensitivity and specificity of 98.87% and 99.86% respectively, with only 8 EEG channels and an energy consumption per inference on the edge as low as 121 uJ. Moreover, in an EOG-based eye movement classification task, we reach an accuracy of 96.68% on 11 classes, resulting in an information transfer rate of 94.78 bit/min, which can be further increased to 161.43 bit/min by reducing the accuracy to 81.43%. The deployed implementation has an energy consumption of 24 uJ per inference and a total system power of only 16.28 mW, allowing for continuous operation of more than 12 h with a small 75 mAh battery.

Abstract:The study of wearable systems based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals has attracted widespread attention and plays an important role in human–computer interaction, physiological state monitoring, and other fields. Traditional sEMG signal acquisition systems are primarily targeted at body parts that are not in line with daily wearing habits, such as the arms, legs, and face. In addition, some systems rely on wired connections, which impacts their flexibility and user-friendliness. This paper presents a novel wrist-worn system with four sEMG acquisition channels and a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) greater than 120 dB. The circuit has an overall gain of 2492 V/V and a bandwidth of 15~500 Hz. It is fabricated using flexible circuit technologies and is encapsulated in a soft skin-friendly silicone gel. The system acquires sEMG signals at a sampling rate of over 2000 Hz with a 16-bit resolution and transmits data to a smart device via low-power Bluetooth. Muscle fatigue detection and four-class gesture recognition experiments (accuracy greater than 95%) were conducted to validate its practicality. The system has potential applications in natural and intuitive human–computer interaction and physiological state monitoring.

Abstract:This paper presents a portable and modular wireless multichannel sensor system for high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) signals acquisition. Featuring low-power and high-quality off-the-shelf components such as the Intan Technologies RHD2132 digital electrophysiology interface chip, the current iteration of the proposed sensor system allows the recording of 32 surface electromyography (sEMG) channels, each at a sampling rate of 1 kHz, and a sample resolution of 16 bits. It features the RHD2132’s typical input-referred noise of 2.4 µVrms, with <15% variation with amplifier bandwidth as specified by the manufacturer, and a total power consumption of 49.5 mW. Data is sent in real-time to a base station using a 2.4-GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) wireless link. Along with the recording platform, the integrated sensor system includes a dry surface electrodes array prototype directly built on a printed circuit board. Intended for complex muscles activity patterns detection on the forearm, the flexible 32 surface electrodes array is designed to be placed flat or to fit a curved area like the forearm in a hand gestures recognition prosthetic system. In such applications, this device will offer improved prosthesis control scheme intuitiveness and ease-of-use. Among other core features of the system are its compact, light-weight and easy to install physical design. The complete system fits on a 2 by 6.5 cm2 printed circuit board mounted on a 7.6 by 11.8 cm2 electrodes array. HD-sEMG user forearm output data collected with the system is presented with a proposed frequency-time-space cross-domain preprocessing method for visualization of HD-EMG data and building training datasets.

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of physiological signals from the human body is critical in health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and therapeutics. Despite the needs, the existing wearable medical devices rely on either bulky wired systems or battery-powered devices needing frequent recharging. Here, we introduce a wearable, self-powered, thermoelectric flexible system architecture for wireless portable monitoring of physiological signals without recharging batteries. This system harvests an exceptionally high open circuit voltage of 175-180 mV from the human body, powering the wireless wearable bioelectronics to detect electrophysiological signals on the skin continuously. The thermoelectric system shows long-term stability in performance for 7 days with stable power management. Integrating screen printing, laser micromachining, and soft packaging technologies enables a multilayered, soft, wearable device to be mounted on any body part. The demonstration of the self-sustainable wearable system for detecting electromyograms and electrocardiograms captures the potential of the platform technology to offer various opportunities for continuous monitoring of biosignals, remote health monitoring, and automated disease diagnosis.

Abstract:The study of eye movements and the measurement of the resulting biopotential, referred to as electrooculography (EOG), may find increasing use in applications within the domain of activity recognition, context awareness, mobile human–computer and human–machine interaction (HCI/HMI), and personal medical devices; provided that, seamless sensing of eye activity and processing thereof is achieved by a truly wearable, low-cost, and accessible technology. The present study demonstrates an alternative to the bulky and expensive camera-based eye tracking systems and reports the development of a graphene textile-based personal assistive device for the first time. This self-contained wearable prototype comprises a headband with soft graphene textile electrodes that overcome the limitations of conventional “wet” electrodes, along with miniaturized, portable readout electronics with real-time signal processing capability that can stream data to a remote device over Bluetooth. The potential of graphene textiles in wearable eye tracking and eye-operated remote object interaction is demonstrated by controlling a mouse cursor on screen for typing with a virtual keyboard and enabling navigation of a four-wheeled robot in a maze, all utilizing five different eye motions initiated with a single channel EOG acquisition. Typing speeds of up to six characters per minute without prediction algorithms and guidance of the robot in a maze with four 180° turns were successfully achieved with perfect pattern detection accuracies of 100% and 98%, respectively.

Abstract:Electronic textiles (E-textiles) offer great wearing comfort and unobtrusiveness, thus holding potential for next-generation health monitoring wearables. However, the practical implementation is hampered by challenges associated with poor signal quality, substantial motion artifacts, durability for long-term usage, and non-ideal user experience. Here, we report a cost-effective E-textile system that features 3D microfiber-based electrodes for greatly increasing the surface area. The soft and fluffy conductive microfibers disperse freely and securely adhere to the skin, achieving a low impedance at the electrode-skin interface even in the absence of gel. A superhydrophobic fluorinated self-assembled monolayer was deposited on the E-textile surface to render it waterproof while retaining the electrical conductivity. Equipped with a custom-designed motion-artifact canceling wireless data recording circuit, the E-textile system could be integrated into a variety of smart garments for exercise physiology and health monitoring applications. Real-time multimodal electrophysiological signal monitoring, including electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyography (EMG), was successfully carried out during strenuous cycling and even underwater swimming activities. Furthermore, a multi-channel E-textile was developed and implemented in clinical patient studies for simultaneous real-time monitoring of maternal ECG and uterine EMG signals, incorporating spatial-temporal potential mapping capabilities.

Performance of Flexible Non-contact Electrodes in Bioelectrical Signal Measurements.

Abstract:Electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalograph (EEG) are two physiological signals closely related with human health, and their measurements can help to detect various diseases in the clinic. Long-term physiological signal monitoring is usually needed to catch any possible diseases which may be missed in conventional short-term monitoring. Currently, wet electrodes are widely used in the clinic to obtain physiological signals. However, wet electrodes require adhesives or conductive gels to improve the quality of recorded signals, and may introduce skin irritation. Based on the Capacitive coupling principle, this study proposed a flexible non-contact electrode that can collect physiological electrical signals without direct contacts with the skin. Moreover, it can attach firmly than common conductive electrodes because of its flexibility. The results showed that the proposed non-contact electrode could reliably obtain high quality physiological signals, and the performance could be comparable to the conventional wet electrodes. Alpha waves could be clearly detected when the subjects closed their eyes, with the non-contact electrodes placed over the hair. This study might provide a reliable solution for long-term monitoring of physiological signals for those whose disorders could not be diagnosed over a short period of time.
