Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic continues spreading rapidly around the world and has caused devastating outcomes towards the health of the global population. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, as the only current gold standard for screening infected cases, yields a relatively high false positive rate and low sensitivity on asymptomatic subjects. The use of chest X-ray radiography (CXR) images coupled with deep-learning (DL) methods for image classification, represents an attractive adjunct to or replacement for RT-PCR testing. However, its usage has been widely debated over the past few months and its potential effectiveness remains unclear. A number of DL-based methods have been proposed to classify the COVID-19 cases from the normal ones, achieving satisfying high performance. However, these methods show limited performance on the multi-class classification task for COVID-19, pneumonia and normal cases, mainly due to two factors: 1) the textures in COVID-19 CXR images are extremely similar to that of pneumonia cases, and 2) there are much fewer COVID-19 cases compared to the other two classes in the public domain. To address these challenges, a novel framework is proposed to learn a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model for accurately classifying COVID-19 and pneumonia cases from other normal cases by the use of CXR images. In addition to training the model by use of conventional classification loss which measures classification accuracy, the proposed method innovatively employs a reconstruction loss measuring image fidelity and an adversarial loss measuring class distribution fidelity to assist in the training of the main DCNN model to extract more informative features to support multi-class classification. The experiment results on a COVID-19 dataset demonstrate the superior classification performance of the proposed method in terms of accuracy compared to other existing DL-based methods. The experiment on another cancer dataset further implies the potential of applying the proposed methods in other medical imaging applications.

Abstract:COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world, the number of COVID-19 cases continues to increase, and lots of countries are facing tremendous pressure on both public and medical resources. Although RT-PCR is the most widely used detection technology with COVID-19 detection, it still has some limitations, such as high cost, being time-consuming, and having low sensitivity. According to the characteristics of chest X-ray (CXR) images, we design the Parallel Channel Attention Feature Fusion Module (PCAF), as well as a new structure of convolutional neural network MCFF-Net proposed based on PCAF. In order to improve the recognition efficiency, the network adopts 3 classifiers: 1-FC, GAP-FC, and Conv1-GAP. The experimental results show that the overall accuracy of MCFF-Net66-Conv1-GAP model is 94.66% for 4-class classification. Simultaneously, the classification accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score of COVID-19 are 100%. MCFF-Net may not only assist clinicians in making appropriate decisions for COVID-19 diagnosis but also mitigate the lack of testing kits.

Covid-19 classification by FGCNet with deep feature fusion from graph convolutional network and convolutional neural network

Abstract:<p>(<strong>Aim</strong>) COVID-19 is an infectious disease spreading to the world this year. In this study, we plan to develop an artificial intelligence based tool to diagnose on chest CT images. (<strong>Method</strong>) On one hand, we extract features from a self-created convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn individual image-level representations. The proposed CNN employed several new techniques such as rank-based average pooling and multiple-way data augmentation. On the other hand, relation-aware representations were learnt from graph convolutional network (GCN). Deep feature fusion (DFF) was developed in this work to fuse individual image-level features and relation-aware features from both GCN and CNN, respectively. The best model was named as FGCNet. (<strong>Results</strong>) The experiment first chose the best model from eight proposed network models, and then compared it with 15 state-of-the-art approaches. (<strong>Conclusion</strong>) The proposed FGCNet model is effective and gives better performance than all 15 state-of-the-art methods. Deep Learning-Based System Combining Chest X-Ray and Computerized Tomography Images for COVID-19 Diagnosis

Abstract:Aims/Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the need for accurate and efficient diagnostic methods. This study aims to improve COVID-19 detection by integrating chest X-ray (CXR) and computerized tomography (CT) images using deep learning techniques, further improving diagnostic accuracy by using a combined imaging approach. Methods: The study used two publicly accessible databases, COVID-19 Questionnaires for Understanding the Exposure (COVID-QU-Ex) and Integrated Clinical and Translational Cancer Foundation (iCTCF), containing CXR and CT images, respectively. The proposed system employed convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for classification, specifically EfficientNet and ResNet architectures. The data underwent preprocessing steps, including image resizing, Gaussian noise addition, and data augmentation. The dataset was divided into training, validation, and test sets. Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) was used for model interpretability. Results: The EfficientNet-based models outperformed the ResNet-based models across all metrics. The highest accuracy achieved was 99.44% for CXR images and 99.81% for CT images with EfficientNetB5. The models also demonstrated high precision, recall, and F1 scores. For statistical significance, the p-values were less than 0.05, indicating that the results are significant. Conclusion: Integrating CXR and CT images using deep learning significantly improves the accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis. The EfficientNet-based models, with their superior feature extraction capabilities, show better performance than ResNet models. Grad-CAM Visualizations provide insights into the model's decision-making process, potentially reducing diagnostic errors and accelerating diagnosis processes. This approach can improve patient care and support healthcare systems in managing the pandemic more effectively.

Abstract:Most detection methods of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) use classic image classification models, which have problems of low recognition accuracy and inaccurate capture of modal features when detecting chest X-rays of COVID-19. This study proposes a COVID-19 detection method based on image modal feature fusion. This method first performs small-sample enhancement processing on chest X-rays, such as rotation, translation, and random transformation. Five classic pretraining models are used when extracting modal features. A global average pooling layer reduces training parameters and prevents overfitting. The model is trained and fine-tuned, the machine learning evaluation standard is used to evaluate the model, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is drawn. Experiments show that compared with the classic model, the classification method in this study can more effectively detect COVID-19 image modal information, and it achieves the expected effect of accurately detecting cases.

Abstract:The COVID-19 virus's rapid global spread has caused millions of illnesses and deaths. As a result, it has disastrous consequences for people's lives, public health, and the global economy. Clinical studies have revealed a link between the severity of COVID-19 cases and the amount of virus present in infected people's lungs. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and chest x-rays can detect COVID-19 (CXR). Manual inspection of these images is a difficult process, so computerized techniques are widely used. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) are a type of machine learning that is frequently used in computer vision applications, particularly in medical imaging, to detect and classify infected regions. These techniques can assist medical personnel in the detection of patients with COVID-19. In this article, a Bayesian optimized DCNN and explainable AI-based framework is proposed for the classification of COVID-19 from the chest X-ray images. The proposed method starts with a multi-filter contrast enhancement technique that increases the visibility of the infected part. Two pre-trained deep models, namely, EfficientNet-B0 and MobileNet-V2, are fine-tuned according to the target classes and then trained by employing Bayesian optimization (BO). Through BO, hyperparameters have been selected instead of static initialization. Features are extracted from the trained model and fused using a slicing-based serial fusion approach. The fused features are classified using machine learning classifiers for the final classification. Moreover, visualization is performed using a Grad-CAM that highlights the infected part in the image. Three publically available COVID-19 datasets are used for the experimental process to obtain improved accuracies of 98.8, 97.9, and 99.4%, respectively.

A Deep Learning Network for Detecting COVID-19 from Chest X-Ray Images

Abstract:Rapid and accurate detection of COVID-19 plays a significant role in treating and preventing the spread of disease transmission. To this end, we fuse the convolutional neural network and residual learning operation to build a multi-class classification model, which has a few parameters and is more conducive to be deployed on a mobile device. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model gains competitive performance. Compared with the COVIDNet-small network, the sensitivity of COVID-19 pneumonia detection is improved from 88.2% (non-COVID-19) and 77.5% (COVID-19) to 95.3% (non-COVID-19) and 96.5% (COVID-19). Alternatively, the Positive predictive value is increased from 72.8% (non-COVID-19) and 89.0% (COVID-19) to 88.8% (non-COVID-19) and 95.1 % (COVID-19). The accuracy is also improved from 85.2 % to 93.0 %, which is very close to the value (93.3 %) of the COVIDNet-large network. But, the weight parameters (13M) of the proposed model are slightly higher than that (11.37M) of the COVIDNet-small network, but only about one-third of that (37.85M) of the COVIDNet-large network.

Abstract:The COVID-19 disease was first discovered in Wuhan, China, and spread quickly worldwide. After the COVID-19 pandemic, many researchers have begun to identify a way to diagnose the COVID-19 using chest X-ray images. The early diagnosis of this disease can significantly impact the treatment process. In this article, we propose a new technique that is faster and more accurate than the other methods reported in the literature. The proposed method uses a combination of DenseNet169 and MobileNet Deep Neural Networks to extract the features of the patient's X-ray images. Using the univariate feature selection algorithm, we refined the features for the most important ones. Then we applied the selected features as input to the LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine) algorithm for classification. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, the ChestX-ray8 dataset, which includes 1125 X-ray images of the patient's chest, was used. The proposed method achieved 98.54% and 91.11% accuracies in the two-class (COVID-19, Healthy) and multi-class (COVID-19, Healthy, Pneumonia) classification problems, respectively. It is worth mentioning that we have used Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) for further analysis.
A novel hand-crafted with deep learning features based fusion model for COVID-19 diagnosis and classification using chest X-ray images

Abstract:Abstract COVID-19 pandemic is increasing in an exponential rate, with restricted accessibility of rapid test kits. So, the design and implementation of COVID-19 testing kits remain an open research problem. Several findings attained using radio-imaging approaches recommend that the images comprise important data related to coronaviruses. The application of recently developed artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, integrated with radiological imaging, is helpful in the precise diagnosis and classification of the disease. In this view, the current research paper presents a novel fusion model hand-crafted with deep learning features called FM-HCF-DLF model for diagnosis and classification of COVID-19. The proposed FM-HCF-DLF model comprises three major processes, namely Gaussian filtering-based preprocessing, FM for feature extraction and classification. FM model incorporates the fusion of handcrafted features with the help of local binary patterns (LBP) and deep learning (DL) features and it also utilizes convolutional neural network (CNN)-based Inception v3 technique. To further improve the performance of Inception v3 model, the learning rate scheduler using Adam optimizer is applied. At last, multilayer perceptron (MLP) is employed to carry out the classification process. The proposed FM-HCF-DLF model was experimentally validated using chest X-ray dataset. The experimental outcomes inferred that the proposed model yielded superior performance with maximum sensitivity of 93.61%, specificity of 94.56%, precision of 94.85%, accuracy of 94.08%, F score of 93.2% and kappa value of 93.5%.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim</h3><p><strong>:</strong> COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. Up to 18th October 2020, worldwide there have been 39.6 million confirmed cases resulting in more than 1.1 million deaths. To improve diagnosis, we aimed to design and develop a novel advanced AI system for COVID-19 classification based on chest CT (CCT) images.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>: Our dataset from local hospitals consisted of 284 COVID-19 images, 281 community-acquired pneumonia images, 293 secondary pulmonary tuberculosis images; and 306 healthy control images. We first used pretrained models (PTMs) to learn features, and proposed a novel (L, 2) transfer feature learning algorithm to extract features, with a hyperparameter of number of layers to be removed (NLR, symbolized as <em>L</em>). Second, we proposed a selection algorithm of pretrained network for fusion to determine the best two models characterized by PTM and NLR. Third, deep CCT fusion by discriminant correlation analysis was proposed to help fuse the two features from the two models. Micro-averaged (MA) F1 score was used as the measuring indicator. The final determined model was named CCSHNet.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>: On the test set, CCSHNet achieved sensitivities of four classes of 95.61%, 96.25%, 98.30%, and 97.86%, respectively. The precision values of four classes were 97.32%, 96.42%, 96.99%, and 97.38%, respectively. The F1 scores of four classes were 96.46%, 96.33%, 97.64%, and 97.62%, respectively. The MA F1 score was 97.04%. In addition, CCSHNet outperformed 12 state-of-the-art COVID-19 detection methods.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>: CCSHNet is effective in detecting COVID-19 and other lung infectious diseases using first-line clinical imaging and can therefore assist radiologists in making accurate diagnoses based on CCTs.</p>

Abstract:The global health crisis due to the fast spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has caused great danger to all aspects of healthcare, economy, and other aspects. The highly infectious and insidious nature of the new coronavirus greatly increases the difficulty of outbreak prevention and control. The early and rapid detection of Covid-19 is an effective way to reduce the spread of Covid-19. However, detecting Covid-19 accurately and quickly in large populations remains to be a major challenge worldwide. In this study, A CNN-transformer fusion framework is proposed for the automatic classification of pneumonia on chest X-ray. This framework includes two parts: data processing and image classification. The data processing stage is to eliminate the differences between data from different medical institutions so that they have the same storage format; in the image classification stage, we use a multi-branch network with a custom convolution module and a transformer module, including feature extraction, feature focus, and feature classification sub-networks. Feature extraction subnetworks extract the shallow features of the image and interact with the information through the convolution and transformer modules. Both the local and global features are extracted by the convolution module and transformer module of feature-focus subnetworks, and are classified by the feature classification subnetworks. The proposed network could decide whether or not a patient has pneumonia, and differentiate between Covid-19 and bacterial pneumonia. This network was implemented on the collected benchmark datasets and the result shows that accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score are 97.09%, 97.16%, 96.93%, and 97.04%, respectively. Our network was compared with other researchers’ proposed methods and achieved better results in terms of accuracy, precision, and F1 score, proving that it is superior for Covid-19 detection. With further improvements to this network, we hope that it will provide doctors with an effective tool for diagnosing Covid-19.

An Ensemble of Global and Local-Attention Based Convolutional Neural Networks for COVID-19 Diagnosis on Chest X-ray Images

Abstract:The recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put a tremendous burden on global health systems. Medical practitioners are under great pressure for reliable screening of suspected cases employing adjunct diagnostic tools to standard point-of-care testing methodology. Chest X-rays (CXRs) are appearing as a prospective diagnostic tool with easy-to-acquire, low-cost and less cross-contamination risk features. Artificial intelligence (AI)-attributed CXR evaluation has shown great potential for distinguishing COVID-19-induced pneumonia from other associated clinical instances. However, one of the associated challenges with diagnostic imaging-based modeling is incorrect feature attribution, which leads the model to learn misguiding disease patterns, causing wrong predictions. Here, we demonstrate an effective deep learning-based methodology to mitigate the problem, thereby allowing the classification algorithm to learn from relevant features. The proposed deep-learning framework consists of an ensemble of convolutional neural network (CNN) models focusing on both global and local pathological features from CXR lung images, while the latter is extracted using a multi-instance learning scheme and a local attention mechanism. An inspection of a series of backbone CNN models using global and local features, and an ensemble of both features, trained from high-quality CXR images of 1311 patients, further augmented for achieving the symmetry in class distribution, to localize lung pathological features followed by the classification of COVID-19 and other related pneumonia, shows that a DenseNet161 architecture outperforms all other models, as evaluated on an independent test set of 159 patients with confirmed cases. Specifically, an ensemble of DenseNet161 models with global and local attention-based features achieve an average balanced accuracy of 91.2%, average precision of 92.4%, and F1-score of 91.9% in a multi-label classification framework comprising COVID-19, pneumonia, and control classes. The DenseNet161 ensembles were also found to be statistically significant from all other models in a comprehensive statistical analysis. The current study demonstrated that the proposed deep learning-based algorithm can accurately identify the COVID-19-related pneumonia in CXR images, along with differentiating non-COVID-19-associated pneumonia with high specificity, by effectively alleviating the incorrect feature attribution problem, and exploiting an enhanced feature descriptor.

Abstract:<p>This study aims to automatically diagnose thoracic diseases depicted on the chest x-ray (CXR) images using deep convolutional neural networks. The existing methods generally used the entire CXR images for training purposes, but this strategy may suffer from two drawbacks. First, potential misalignment or the existence of irrelevant objects in the entire CXR images may cause unnecessary noise and thus limit the network performance. Second, the relatively low image resolution caused by the resizing operation, which is a common pre-processing procedure for training neural networks, may lead to the loss of image details, making it difficult to detect pathologies with small lesion regions. To address these issues, we present a novel method termed as segmentation-based deep fusion network (SDFN), which leverages the domain knowledge and the higher-resolution information of local lung regions. Specifically, the local lung regions were identified and cropped by the Lung Region Generator (LRG). Two CNN-based classification models were then used as feature extractors to obtain the discriminative features of the entire CXR images and the cropped lung region images. Lastly, the obtained features were fused by the feature fusion module for disease classification. Evaluated by the NIH benchmark split on the Chest X-ray 14 Dataset, our experimental result demonstrated that the developed method achieved more accurate disease classification compared with the available approaches via the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. It was also found that the SDFN could localize the lesion regions more precisely as compared to the traditional method.</p>

Abstract:Chest X-ray and CT are the effective imaging techniques that provide a non-invasive tool to monitor the progression of the COVID-19 that has raged since 2019. Deep learning methods play their role of feature computation and screening, potentially helping to rapidly assess and classify medical images of COVID-19 with other pneumonia-related diseases or healthy subjects. Benefiting from the high availability of large-scale labeled images, neural networks based on convolutional operations, attention mechanisms and gating scheme have achieved great success in medical image recognition. However, due to the limited number of medical labeled images and the singleness of existing models and data, the training efficiency of various algorithms is reduced, resulting in the medical image feature recognition error and the focus location deviation of COVID-19, thus increasing the one-sided misdiagnosis. To address this problem, we proposed a multi-level feature attention network (MLF-AttNet) for COVID-19 detection, which consists of two components: a data preprocessor and a data analyzer. The 6-layer data preprocessor performs denoising and data augmentation on the input medical data; the four-layer integrated data analyzer extracts and classifies the multi-scale, multi-level and spatio-temporal features of the source data for feature extraction. MLF-AttNet not only enhances data augmentation, but also establishes a multi-level feature extraction mechanism to integrate multiple models and multi-source datasets, striving to avoid the problem of single diagnosis. The framework proposed in this paper is verified on X-ray and CT datasets, which is compared with several state-of-the-art studies. Our experimental results show that MLF-AttNet can achieve recognition accuracy of 93.66% and 87.08% on CT and X-ray datasets, respectively.

Abstract:The world is experiencing an unprecedented crisis due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak that has affected nearly 216 countries and territories across the globe. Since the pandemic outbreak, there is a growing interest in computational model-based diagnostic technologies to support the screening and diagnosis of COVID-19 cases using medical imaging such as chest X-ray (CXR) scans. It is discovered in initial studies that patients infected with COVID-19 show abnormalities in their CXR images that represent specific radiological patterns. Still, detection of these patterns is challenging and time-consuming even for skilled radiologists. In this study, we propose a novel convolutional neural network- (CNN-) based deep learning fusion framework using the transfer learning concept where parameters (weights) from different models are combined into a single model to extract features from images which are then fed to a custom classifier for prediction. We use gradient-weighted class activation mapping to visualize the infected areas of CXR images. Furthermore, we provide feature representation through visualization to gain a deeper understanding of the class separability of the studied models with respect to COVID-19 detection. Cross-validation studies are used to assess the performance of the proposed models using open-access datasets containing healthy and both COVID-19 and other pneumonia infected CXR images. Evaluation results show that the best performing fusion model can attain a classification accuracy of 95.49% with a high level of sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract:Chest computed tomography (CT) becomes an effective tool to assist the diagnosis of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide, using the computed-aided diagnosis technique for COVID-19 classification based on CT images could largely alleviate the burden of clinicians. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Feature Selection guided Deep Forest (AFS-DF) for COVID-19 classification based on chest CT images. Specifically, we first extract location-specific features from CT images. Then, in order to capture the high-level representation of these features with the relatively small-scale data, we leverage a deep forest model to learn high-level representation of the features. Moreover, we propose a feature selection method based on the trained deep forest model to reduce the redundancy of features, where the feature selection could be adaptively incorporated with the COVID-19 classification model. We evaluated our proposed AFS-DF on COVID-19 dataset with 1495 patients of COVID-19 and 1027 patients of community acquired pneumonia (CAP). The accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), AUC, precision and F1-score achieved by our method are 91.79%, 93.05%, 89.95%, 96.35%, 93.10% and 93.07%, respectively. Experimental results on the COVID-19 dataset suggest that the proposed AFS-DF achieves superior performance in COVID-19 vs. CAP classification, compared with 4 widely used machine learning methods.

Abstract:A newly emerged coronavirus (COVID-19) seriously threatens human life and health worldwide. In coping and fighting against COVID-19, the most critical step is to effectively screen and diagnose infected patients. Among them, chest X-ray imaging technology is a valuable imaging diagnosis method. The use of computer-aided diagnosis to screen X-ray images of COVID-19 cases can provide experts with auxiliary diagnosis suggestions, which can reduce the burden of experts to a certain extent. In this study, we first used conventional transfer learning methods, using five pre-trained deep learning models, which the Xception model showed a relatively ideal effect, and the diagnostic accuracy reached 96.75%. In order to further improve the diagnostic accuracy, we propose an efficient diagnostic method that uses a combination of deep features and machine learning classification. It implements an end-to-end diagnostic model. The proposed method was tested on two datasets and performed exceptionally well on both of them. We first evaluated the model on 1102 chest X-ray images. The experimental results show that the diagnostic accuracy of Xception + SVM is as high as 99.33%. Compared with the baseline Xception model, the diagnostic accuracy is improved by 2.58%. The sensitivity, specificity and AUC of this model reached 99.27%, 99.38% and 99.32%, respectively. To further illustrate the robustness of our method, we also tested our proposed model on another dataset. Finally also achieved good results. Compared with related research, our proposed method has higher classification accuracy and efficient diagnostic performance. Overall, the proposed method substantially advances the current radiology based methodology, it can be very helpful tool for clinical practitioners and radiologists to aid them in diagnosis and follow-up of COVID-19 cases.

Abstract:During the past three years, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has swept the world. The rapid and accurate recognition of covid-19 pneumonia are ,therefore, of great importance. To handle this problem, we propose a new pipeline of deep learning framework for diagnosing COVID-19 pneumonia via chest X-ray images from normal, COVID-19, and other pneumonia patients. In detail, the self-trained YOLO-v4 network was first used to locate and segment the thoracic region, and the output images were scaled to the same size. Subsequently, the pre-trained convolutional neural network was adopted to extract the features of X-ray images from 13 convolutional layers, which were fused with the original image to form a 14-dimensional image matrix. It was then put into three parallel pyramid multi-layer perceptron (MLP)-Mixer modules for comprehensive feature extraction through spatial fusion and channel fusion based on different scales so as to grasp more extensive feature correlation. Finally, by combining all image features from the 14-channel output, the classification task was achieved using two fully connected layers as well as Softmax classifier for classification. Extensive simulations based on a total of 4099 chest X-ray images were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results indicated that our proposed method can achieve the best performance in almost all cases, which is good for auxiliary diagnosis of COVID-19 and has great clinical application potential.

Abstract:The new coronavirus (COVID-2019) epidemic outbreak has devastating impacts on people's daily lives and public healthcare systems. The chest X-ray image is an effective tool for diagnosing new coronavirus diseases. This paper proposes a new method to identify the new coronavirus from chest X-ray images to assist radiologists in fast and accurate image reading. We first enhance the contrast of X-ray images by using adaptive histogram equalization and eliminating image noise by using a median filter. Then, the X-ray image is fed to a sophisticated deep neural network (FAC-DPN-SENet) proposed by us to train a classifier, which is used to classify an X-ray image as usual or COVID-2019 or other pneumonia. Applying our method to a standard dataset, we achieve a classification accuracy of 93%, which is significantly better performance than several other state-of-the-art models, such as ResNet and DenseNet. This shows that the proposed method can be used as an effective tool to detect COVID-2019.

Abstract:Background : The increasing number of COVID-19 patients around the world and the limited number of detection kits pose a challenge in determining the presence of the disease. Imaging modalities such as X-rays are commonly used because they are readily available and cost-effective. Deep learning has proved to be an excellent tool because of the abundance of online medical images in various medical modalities, such as X-Ray, computerized tomography (CT) Scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A large number of medical research projects have been proposed and launched since early 2020 due to the overwhelming use of deep learning techniques in medical imaging. Methods: We have used fuzzy logic and deep learning to determine if chest X-ray images belong to people who have pneumonia related to COVID-19 and people who have interstitial pneumonias that aren't related to COVID-19. Results: In comparison to the current literature, the proposed transfer learning approach is more successful. It is possible to classify covid, viral, and bacterial pneumonia or a healthy patient using ResNet 18 Architecture's four-class classifiers. The proposed method achieved a 97% classification accuracy, 96% precision, and 98% recall in the case of COVID-19 detection using chest X-ray images, which demonstrates the importance of deep learning in medical image diagnosis. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the proposed technique has the maximum sensitivity rate, with 97.1% ratio. Finally, with a 97.47% F1-score rate, the proposed strategy yields the highest value when compared to the others. Conclusions: DeepLearning techniques and fuzzy features resulted in an improved classification ability, with an accuracy rate of up to 97.7% using ResNet 18, which is a better value when compared to the remaining techniques. Classification of COVID-19 scans and other pneumonia cases have been done successfully by demonstrating the potential for applying such deep learning techniques in the near future.
