Abstract:Live streaming has offered new opportunities for retailers to increase their sales, hence its reception of continuous scholarly attention. However, understanding the antecedents of viewer watching and purchasing behaviors in live streaming remains largely insufficient. This study thus constructs a framework from a stream-streamer-viewer perspective to provide a deeper understanding of viewer watching and purchasing behaviors. Using flow theory, both stream dimension (social presence and interactivity) and streamer dimension (streamer attractiveness and streamer expertise) as proposed as antecedents of flow, which motivates viewer behavior. Moreover, the optimal stimulation level of viewers (i.e., viewer dimension) was found as a moderator which alters the way stream and streamer dimensions affect flow experience and downstream behaviors. Structural equation modeling was applied on 367 survey questionnaires to test our framework. Results indicate that both social presence and interactivity enhance flow. Furthermore, flow has a significant influence on continuous watching and purchase intention. Meanwhile, optimal stimulation level negatively moderates social presence on flow, but positively moderates interactivity on it.

Abstract:Live-streaming shopping has become increasingly popular in social commerce. Reviewing recent research on live-streaming shopping, we find that most papers about this topic have focused on user behavior and user experience. While these previous studies, including Sun et al. (2019), have provided useful insights into different aspects of live-streaming in social commerce, most of them have used cross-sectional surveys as the primary research method. Therefore, limitations such as the self-reporting bias or the common research method bias may hinder our understanding of the real effect of live-streaming on consumer purchase behavior. The actual causal relationship between live-streaming and consumer purchases should be further examined using more robust econometric models, natural experiments, or longitudinal studies.
Unravelling the Significance of Social Presence in Live E-commerce: An Empirical Exploration Employing Social Presence as an Intermediate Variable

Abstract:Live e-commerce is an important e-commerce industry that has emerged in recent years, and due to its diversified scenarios, strong interactivity, and fast growth in user scale, it has become an important way to pull the development of e-commerce. Based on the theoretical analysis, this paper constructs a relationship model of streamer live streaming, social presence, and consumers' purchase intention. Then, a questionnaire survey was carried out in an online way, and the hypothesis testing of the theoretical model was carried out. The results show that: attractiveness, professionalism, and interactivity have significant positive effects on consumers' purchase intention; the mediating effect of social presence is significant, i.e., streamer live streaming promotes consumers' purchase intention by improving the sense of presence. Accordingly, two suggestions are put forward: one is to enhance the consumer experience as the focus of creating a good atmosphere for live streaming, and the other is to emphasize streamer screening and training to create a professional network with strong competence. The second is to emphasize streamer screening and training to create a streamer team with strong professional ability.

Abstract:With the rise of live streaming, many internet companies began to carry out the live streaming business, and this system was applied in various fields. Due to the emergence of e-commerce live streaming in recent years, the studies on it are not comprehensive. And for the construction of live streaming of mobile e-commerce, it is rarely considered from the perspective of users' hedonic needs. This study combined with the social presence theory to build a conceptual model explored the impact of this system on users' intention to adopt from the perspective of enjoyment feeling. The results show visual scene positively affects users' perceived enjoyment, visual scene and communication function have positive effect on social presence, social presence has positive effect on perceived enjoyment, and perceived enjoyment positively affects users' adoption intention. Finally, the authors provide practical suggestions and strategies for platform operators and sellers.

Abstract:Purpose Live Streaming Marketing has emerged as a transformative medium, facilitating real-time product promotion and brand messaging and reshaping consumer engagement. However, knowledge of the impact of Store Atmospheric cues within live streaming contexts remains scarce. This research delves into the dynamic interplay between streamers and viewers across diverse live streaming platforms, with a focus on the impact of distinct atmospheric cues. It also seeks to explore prosocial behavior and integrate elements of social comparison theory. Design/methodology/approach We conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 streamers and 26 viewers. Participants who were active on streaming platforms and had experience of multiple live streaming sessions were purposively identified. The thematic coding approach and NVivo 12 software were employed to gain a nuanced understanding of live streaming dynamics. Findings Our findings highlight the significant role of emerging atmospheric cues in shaping immersive streaming experiences and fostering prosocial behavior. Additionally, we observed three formats of upward social comparisons between streamers and viewers, wherein viewers compared themselves with streamers and peers, and streamers engaged in comparisons with more experienced counterparts. This finding contributes to a sense of digital community and positive interactions because of live streaming adoptions. Originality/value By extending the application of social comparison theory, this study provides valuable insights for practitioners and scholars, enriching the understanding of both streamers' and viewers' psychological behavior and the dynamics of virtual retail settings.

Abstract:The virtual display of products in e-commerce brings new problems of information asymmetry, and the overload of digital information also increases the difficulty of consumers' purchasing decisions. The real-time interaction between the streamer and the consumer during live streaming e-commerce will promote consumers' understanding of the product, reduce information asymmetry, and increase consumers' purchase intention. However, why do people trust the untouchable and unfamiliar streamers from live streaming e-commerce to purchase online? To understand this phenomenon, based on the perspective of the information asymmetry theory and parasocial relationship theory, this research identified how social capital affected purchase intention in live streaming e-commerce. Through a questionnaire survey of live viewers, the purchase intention model constructed by empirical testing was used. The findings showed that the streamer's professionalism, the reciprocal expectation of live streaming, and the viewer's parasocial relationship could effectively increase the viewer's purchase intention. The occurrence of a streamer's negative public events could significantly reduce the viewer's purchase intention. The scale of live streaming and the streamer's commitment had no significant impact on the viewer's purchase intention. Trust played an intermediary role between the streamer's professionalism and parasocial relationship and the viewer's purchase intention.

Abstract:Live streaming commerce has grown rapidly in recent years. Although the way streamers communicate with viewers is the key to influencing users' purchase behaviors, little is known about the influence of streamers' communication style on purchase intention. Drawing on parasocial interaction theory and flow theory, this study examines the influence of streamers' interaction orientation on viewers' immersion and parasocial interactions, and its effect on viewers' purchase intentions. The moderating effect of streamers' expertise and attractiveness is also examined. The authors conducted an empirical study using a structural equation modeling approach based on 407 responses to a questionnaire completed by live streaming audiences. Results indicate that streamers' interaction orientation has a positive effect on viewers' immersion and parasocial interactions, in turn positively affecting viewers' willingness to purchase. Streamers' expertise positively moderates the effect of their interaction orientation on viewers' immersion and parasocial interactions. This research is among the first to explore the effect of streamers' communication style and provides a framework for how their communication style affects viewers' purchase intention by enhancing immersion and parasocial interaction in live streaming commerce.

Abstract:This paper aims to examine the relationship between social presence and consumer purchase intention in the context of livestreaming commerce and test the mediating role of immersive experience and the moderating role of positive emotions. The authors used a convenience sampling method to select 408 college students from a university in Ganzhou as the participants. They employed structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses, as well as Hayes' PROCESS to test the mediation and moderation effects. The authors found that immersion experiences partially mediate the relationship between social presence and consumers' purchase intentions and positive emotions moderate the "social presence–immersion experience–consumer purchase intentions" path. Therefore, social presence constitutes a moderating mediating effect on consumer purchase intentions. This study offers meaningful insights into how livestreamers and e-retailers can stimulate consumers' buying behavior in livestreaming environments. E-commerce platforms should strengthen consumer interactions and increase consumers' perceptions of social presence. In addition, companies should meet the social and psychological needs of consumers and generate positive emotional resonance. This research sheds light on the effect of social presence on consumer purchase intentions in livestreaming commerce and extends the social presence literature by investigating the mediation mechanism of immersive experience.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the Internet and the widespread adoption of mobile devices, live streaming has become a new social medium in the last few years. Hence, the continuous usage of live streaming platforms has become an important issue. Based on social exchange theory, this study investigates how different kinds of interactions affect viewers' sense of virtual community (SOVC) and in turn facilitate their continuous watching intention. Empirical results ( N = 423) reveal that both viewer-broadcaster interaction and viewer-viewer interaction positively affect viewers' SOVC, which further enhances their stickiness. Furthermore, viewer-platform interaction positively moderates the effects of interactions between viewers and broadcasters on their SOVC, whereas the moderating role of gift-giving behaviour is insignificant. Finally, the effects of viewer-broadcaster interaction and viewer-viewer interaction on stickiness are partially mediated by SOVC. This study contributes to in-depth research on the relationships between different specific interactions and viewers' continuous watching intention, which enriches the existing study on live streaming and deepens our understanding of viewers' stickiness. The empirical findings of this study suggest that social media developers and managers take actions to encourage interactions that increase viewers' stickiness.

Abstract:Introduction: In live streaming shopping, exploring the influencing mechanism of consumers' participation is an important prerequi site for understanding consumer behavior in social commerce activities. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship betw een technological and social factors (visibility, media richness, guidance shopping and real-time interactivity) in live streaming shop ping and consumers' purchase intention. The mediating roles of attraction and cognitive assimilation were also examined. Methods: This study collected 425 pieces of data through questionnaire survey. The structural equation model is established based on S-O-R frame. The hypothesis is tested by structural equation model. Results: Our study found that that real-time interactive and media richness positively affect attraction; visibility, guidance shopping and media richness positive affect cognitive assimilation; cognitive assimilation and attraction positive affect consumers' purchase intention; cognitive assimilation and attraction play a partial mediating role in the influence of technology and social factors on cons umers' purchase intention of live streaming shopping. Discussion: From the perspective of socio-technical, this study explores the influence mechanism of different influencing factors on consumers' purchase intention in live streaming shopping. This study expands the application of IT affordance theory in the context of live streaming shopping, and reveals the mediating role of attraction and cognitive assimilation between social, technological factors and consumers' purchase intention.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of two characteristics of streamers—expertise and entertainment—on viewers' purchase intention and follow intention in live-streaming e-commerce, with a specific focus on viewers' trust and flow experience as two mediators and viewers' optimal stimulation level as a moderator. We implemented a methodological approach where participants were randomly directed to enter a live broadcast room and watch a 10-min live session before engaging in a structured questionnaire. 399 valid questionnaires were collected from the participants. These 399 valid questionnaires were subsequently utilized to validate the research model using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results suggest that streamer expertise and entertainment enhance viewers' trust and flow experience, which then leads to an increase in their intention to make a purchase and continue following the streamer. Furthermore, the viewers' optimal stimulation level acts as a moderator in the connections between streamer characteristics and viewers' trust and flow experience, suggesting that individual differences among consumers affect how they respond to streamer characteristics. From the dual perspectives of the streamer and the viewer, this study provides a more comprehensive theoretical perspective on customer behavior in live streaming commerce by not only focusing on consumers' short-term, transactional behavior inclinations but also long-term, relational behavior intentions.

Abstract:As a new business model, live-streaming commerce has great commercial value. This study used the stimulus–organism–response framework to explore the psychological mechanisms of how live peculiarities impact consumer behavioral responses as well as the effects of gender and platform differences, and to make clear how to choose the two dependent variables of engagement and purchase intentions. Using 454 valid questionnaires from consumers who had made purchases during live streaming, the authors employed partial least squares structural equation modeling to analysis the research model. The results suggest that interactivity, visualization, entertainment, and professionalization play considerable roles in consumer behavioral responses and that their psychological mechanisms are different. Male respondents are more satisfied with interactivity than females. E-commerce platforms are more interactive, visible and professional than social media platforms, and the trust mechanism of social media platforms is immature. If we use engagement to describe consumer behavioral responses of interactivity and purchase intentions to describe consumer behavioral responses of visualization, entertainment, and professionalization, this provides a basis for selecting the two dependent variables in live-streaming commerce. This study extends existing theoretical research on live-streaming commerce and provides some managerial implications for platforms, stores, and streamers.

Abstract:The e-commerce landscape is evolving rapidly, and businesses seek novel ways to enhance their competitive edge. In this context, understanding consumers' purchase intentions becomes crucial. Drawing from the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theory, we propose a conceptual framework investigating the factors influencing purchase intention in e-commerce live-streaming marketing. The research adopts Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and hypothesis testing to evaluate the relationships. The findings revealed that the attributes of live streaming, including the live streamer, the product, and the field, as well as trust and impulsiveness, positively influence purchase intention. This study provides a novel perspective on live streaming e-commerce with evidence on how e-commerce live streaming drives purchase intentions, enriches the content of live streaming e-commerce literature, and explores the practical implications for marketing managers who are looking for marketing by live streaming.
The influence of streamers' physical attractiveness on consumer response behavior: based on eye-tracking experiments

Abstract:Live streaming marketing has become a popular topic of academic research. However, relatively few studies have been conducted in terms of the physical attractiveness of streamers, and even fewer studies have analyzed the changes in cognitive-emotional mechanisms that affect consumer response behavior. Based on SOR theory and cognitive-emotional system theory, this study proposes a theoretical research model and analyzes the internal mechanism of streamers' physical attractiveness affecting consumers' response using a combination of eye-tracking experiments and questionnaires. The results showed that: compared to streamers with lower physical attractiveness, consumers pay longer attention to streamers and products with higher physical attractiveness, and their response behaviors (continued watching intention, continued engagement intention, and purchase intention) are more active; compared to consumers with low involvement, consumers with high involvement pay longer attention to the product and perceive the process for a longer period of time; and quasi-social interaction and the flow experience play the role of a chain mediator between streamers' physical attractiveness and consumers' response behaviors. This study not only has certain theoretical significance for expanding the applicable boundaries of the physical appearance halo effect, but also has important practical significance for live broadcasting e-commerce companies to effectively adopt visual marketing and enhance customer retention.

Research on Determinants Affecting Users' Impulsive Purchase Intention in Live Streaming from the Perspective of Perceived Live Streamers' Ability

Abstract:As an innovative marketing pattern, live-streaming e-commerce supplies advantages over traditional e-commerce in stimulating impulsive purchases. This study developed a theoretical model that examines how perceived live streamers' abilities (perceived live interaction ability and perceived linguistic persuasion ability) affect impulsive purchase intention based on interaction theory, affective distance theory, trust theory, and Aristotle's rhetorical appeals. We conducted empirical research through a survey questionnaire to verify the effectiveness of the model. A total of 330 valid samples were gathered from live-streaming users, and partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed for data analysis. The results indicate that perceived live interaction ability, encompassing responsiveness, entertainment, and personalization, significantly impacts affective distance. Among the four dimensions of perceived linguistic persuasion ability, emotional contagion significantly influences affective distance, whereas expertise, logic, and morality significantly affect cognitive trust. Both affective distance and cognitive trust promote consumers' impulsive purchases through affective trust. Our research findings provide theoretical and practical recommendations for live-streaming platforms and merchants engaged in live marketing.
The Effects of Live Streamer's Facial Attractiveness and Product Type on Consumer Purchase Intention: An Exploratory Study with Eye Tracking Technology

Abstract:As a booming branch of online retailing, live-streaming e-commerce can present abundant information dimensions and diverse forms of expression. Live-streaming e-commerce has enabled online retailers to interact with customers face-to-face, resulting in widespread instances of emotional and impulse buying behavior. Prior research in live-streaming e-commerce has suggested that live streamers' characteristics, especially the live streamer's face, can affect customers' purchase intentions. The present research used questionnaire surveys and an eye tracking experiment to investigate the impact of live streamer's facial attractiveness on consumer purchase intention for search-based and experience-based products. The questionnaire survey analyzed 309 valid questionnaires and revealed that attractive faces are the key influencing factor driving consumers' impulse purchase intentions. Moreover, consumers' emotional experience plays a partial mediating role in the process of live streamers' faces influencing purchase intention. The eye tracking experiment further explored the mechanism of a live streamer's facial attractiveness on consumers' purchase intentions of search-based products and experience-based products from the perspective of visual attention by analyzing 64 valid sets of data. The results showed that attractive faces attract more consumers' attention and, therefore, increase their purchase intention. Furthermore, there is a significant interaction between product type, the live streamer's facial attractiveness, and consumers' purchase intentions. In the case of unattractive live streamers, consumers are more likely to buy search-based products than experience-based products, while the purchase intention does not vary between search-based products and experience-based products in the case of attractive live streamers. The present study provides evidence for 'beauty premium' in live-streaming e-commerce and sheds light on the design of the match between live streamers and different types of products.

Abstract:Live streaming e-commerce, as a kind of new information technology-based business model, is currently the most popular marketing approach, especially in China. This research divides live streaming interactions into three dimensions, interactions for obtaining product information (IPI), interactions for grasping the purchase dynamics of others (IPD), and interactions for obtaining monetary incentives (IMI), and proposes a comprehensive framework to examine whether live streaming interactions with consumers promote both social presence and consumer conformity, and thereby enhance their purchase intentions. Covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) with AMOS was conducted to analyze data collected from 576 Chinese consumers. The main findings are that, first, both IPI and IPD can exert a direct impact on social presence and consumer conformity; second, IMI has a positive impact only on social presence; third, among the three dimensions of interactions, both IPI and IPD tend to increase purchase intention through social presence and consumer conformity, while IMI increases purchase intention only via social presence. Furthermore, given the differences between experience and search products, the results of the multigroup analysis indicate inconsistent path coefficients between the two product groups. This study provides a novel perspective on live streaming e-commerce with evidence on how interactions matter in driving purchase intentions, enriches the content of live streaming e-commerce literature and explores the practical implications for marketing managers are looking for marketing by live streaming.

Abstract:Utilizing the uses and gratifications theory (U&G), this study hypothesized the impact of various factors on the attitudes of individuals toward social media platforms and brands, as well as their impact on online consumption. Live streams and the associated brands were shown to be influenced by factors such as positive value, self-brand congruity, social price, interaction control, human message interaction, informativeness, entertainment, and credibility. Additionally, online consumption behavior was predicted to be significantly influenced by these attitudes. A total of 759 social media users were surveyed, and hypotheses were tested using SPSS. The study's results confirm all hypotheses, showing that each factor directly affects attitudes and behaviors related to consumption. The study also examines the mediating role of attitudes toward live streams and brand influence on online consumption behavior in the relationship between the aforementioned factors. Online consumption was hypothesized to be influenced by attitudes toward live streams, positive value, and self-brand congruity, among other factors. Attitudes towards the brand mediated a similar relationship between these elements and online content consumption. This study aimed to provide an understanding of how various factors influence attitudes towards brands and live streams on social media. Marketers, brand strategists, and social media platforms can benefit from this study as the findings provide insights into optimizing live stream strategies and enhancing consumer-brand relationships in an increasingly digital world.

Hence, the present study develops a model to determine the factors influencing consumers' live-stream shopping intention by employing the affordance lens and S-O-R model. The online data was collected through the Wenjuanxing website from the users of live-streaming platforms such as Taobao.com, Mogujie.com, and JD.com. Results showed that (N = 434): trust can be enhanced through visibility, metavoicing, trading affordance, guidance shopping and interactivity that consequently affects consumer purchase intention. In addition, this study highlights the theoretical and managerial implications for social commerce.
