Abstract:This study examines the projected changes in mean and extreme precipitation over the Mediterranean (MED) and Sahara (SAH) regions based on the multi‐model ensemble mean of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate model (GCM) datasets. The study employs robust statistical analyses to investigate future changes during 2015 – 2100 relative to a baseline period (1995 – 2014), under two Shared Socio‐economic Pathways (SSP) scenarios: SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5. Selected indices from the Expert Team on Climate Change and Detection Indices (ETCCDI) are used in this study. They include those that represent maximum daily precipitation (RX1day), simple daily precipitation intensity (SDII), heavy precipitation days (R10mm), consecutive dry days (CDD), and consecutive wet days (CWD). Historical and projected daily precipitation is first bias‐adjusted using a quantile mapping approach before employing them to compute mean and extreme precipitation changes. The results demonstrate that the bias adjustment largely reduces the biases in the modeled mean and extreme precipitation over MED and SAH regions. Projections show a reduction in mean precipitation over most parts of the study region by the end of the 21st century. The areas encompassing Morocco and Algeria, and the Mediterranean area will experience the highest drying. The projected pattern agrees with the "wet gets wetter, dry gets drier" paradigm. The number of consecutive dry days and wet‐day intensity are also projected to increase and decrease, respectively. Under SSP5‐8.5, significant changes and the largest decrease in SDII attributed to global warming are projected in both regions. The reduction in mean precipitation, coupled with an increase in dry days, is likely to exacerbate the region's droughts and aridity situation and worsen the water scarcity status. Although there are uncertainties in the CMIP simulations, the findings support earlier studies based on varying datasets. Abstract:In a warming climate, drought events are projected to increase in many regions across the world, which would have detrimental impacts on water resources for agriculture activity and human life. Thus, projecting drought changes, especially the frequency of future drought events, is very important for the African continent. This study investigates the future changes in drought events based on the France Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM-CM6) model in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase six (CMIP6) datasets for four shared socio-economic pathways (SSP): SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5; and three time slices: near future (2020–2039), mid-century (2050–2069), and end-of-century (2080–2099), relative to a historical baseline period (1995–2014). The interannual variability and trends of the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI) based on the Penman–Monteith methods for measuring potential evapotranspiration (PET) are used to estimate future droughts. The temporal analysis shows that the drought frequency, intensity, and affected area will increase throughout the 21st century. Among the scenarios, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 project a larger upward trend in drought characteristics than SSP1-2.6 and SSP2-4.5. The spatial pattern shows drought frequency decreases in humid regions and increases in non-humid regions across Africa. For all SSP scenarios, the projected wetting trend per decade ranges from 0.05 to 0.25, while the drying trend per decade ranges from −0.05 to 0.25. A regional trend analysis revealed key differences in spatial pattern, with varied trend projections of wetter and drier conditions in humid and non-humid regions under all SSP scenarios. Drier conditions are expected to intensify in Southern Africa under all SSP scenarios but are projected to be more intense under either SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5. In general, the projected wetter trends in humid areas may favor agricultural production and ecological conservation, and drier trends in non-humid regions may call for the possible adoption of tailor-made drought adaptation strategies and development programmes to minimize impacts.

Abstract:Precipitation plays a crucial role in Africa's agriculture, water resources, and economic stability, and assessing its potential changes under future warming is important. In this study, we demonstrate that the latest generation of coupled climate models (CMIP6) robustly project substantial wetting over western, central, and eastern Africa. In contrast, southern Africa and Madagascar tend toward future drying. Under shared socioeconomic pathways (defined by Shared Socioeconomic Pathways SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5), our results suggest that most parts of Africa, except for southern Africa and Madagascar, will experience very wet years five times more often in 2050–2100, according to the multi-model median. Conversely, southern Africa and Madagascar will experience very dry years twice as often by the end of the 21st century. Furthermore, we find that the increasing risk of extreme annual rainfall is accompanied by a shift toward days with heavier rainfall. Our findings provide important insights into inter-hemispheric changes in precipitation characteristics under future warming and underscore the need for serious mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Abstract:Climate change is affecting the agriculture, water, and energy sectors in East Africa and the impact is projected to increase in the future. To allow adaptation and mitigation of the impacts, we assessed the changes in climate and their impacts on hydrology and hydrological extremes in East Africa. We used outputs from seven CMIP‐6 Global Climate Models (GCMs) and 1981‐2010 is used as a reference period. The output from GCMs are statistically downscaled using the Bias Correction‐Constructed Analogues with Quantile Mapping Reordering (BCCAQ) method to drive a high‐resolution hydrological model. The Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) and vector‐based routing models are used to simulate runoff and streamflow across 68300 river reaches in East Africa. The results show an increase in annual precipitation (up to 35%) in Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya and a decrease (up to 4.5%) in Southern Tanzania in the 2050s (2041‐2070) and 2080s (2071‐2100). During the long rainy season (March‐May), precipitation is projected to be higher (up to 43%) than the reference period in Southern Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda but lower (up to ‐20%) in Tanzania. Large parts of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Southern Ethiopia show an increase in precipitation (up to 38%) during the short rainy season (October‐December). Temperature and evapotranspiration will continue to increase in the future. Further, annual and seasonal streamflow and hydrological extremes (droughts and floods) are projected to increase in large parts of the region throughout the 21st century calling for site‐specific adaptation. Estimating the Effects of Climate Fluctuations on Precipitation and Temperature in East Africa

Abstract:This study evaluated the effectiveness of the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled models from CMIP6 experiments (hereafter; NEX-GDDP-CMIP6) in reproducing observed precipitation and temperature across East Africa (EA) from 1981 to 2014. Additionally, climate changes were estimated under various emission scenarios, namely low (SSP1-2.6), medium (SSP2-4.5), and high (SSP5-8.5) scenarios. Multiple robust statistics metrics, the Taylor diagram, and interannual variability skill (IVS) were employed to identify the best-performing models. Significant trends in future precipitation and temperature are evaluated using the Mann-Kendall and Sen's slope estimator tests. The results highlighted IPSL-CM6A-LR, EC-Earth3, CanESM5, and INM-CM4-8 as the best-performing models for annual and March to May (MAM) precipitation and temperature respectively. By the end of this century, MAM precipitation and temperature are projected to increase by 40% and 4.5 °C, respectively, under SSP5-8.5. Conversely, a decrease in MAM precipitation and temperature of 5% and 0.8 °C was projected under SSP2-4.5 and SSP1-2.6, respectively. Long-term mean precipitation increased in all climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5), with near-term MAM precipitation showing a 5% decrease in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and some parts of Tanzania. Under the SSP5-8.5 scenario, temperature rise exceeded 2–6 °C in most regions across the area, with the fastest warming trend of over 6 °C observed in diverse areas. Thus, high greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios can be very harmful to EA and further GHG control is needed.

Abstract:Climate change led an increase in the frequency of severe droughts, the effects of which are exacerbated by a lack of water storage. Despite increasing research on global-scale total water storage (TWS) change and drought prediction, basin-scale long-term hydrological drought, TWS change, and El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence in East Africa (EA) remain unexplored. In this paper, we used multiple approaches, of ensemble machine learning (ML) and weighted averaging, to conduct a basin-scale exploratory analysis of future hydrological drought and TWS change for the period 2025–2099. Climate change will affect future hydrological conditions in the basins, with maximum severity values of −90.3, −726.6, and −2567.7 Gt in the Tana, Turkana, and Victoria basins, respectively, under RCP6.0. Similarly, we found maximum severities of −187.5 and −277.7 Gt in the Abaya-Chamo and Tanganyika basins, respectively, under RCP 2.6. The most severe El Nino drought and exceptional La Nina conditions in the basins were found under both RCP scenarios. To ensure future water security in EA, sustainable water resource management strategies that can mitigate the impacts of extreme climate events in the future are urgently needed.

Projection of meteorological droughts in Nigeria during growing seasons under climate change scenarios

Abstract:Like many other African countries, incidence of drought is increasing in Nigeria. In this work, spatiotemporal changes in droughts under different representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios were assessed; considering their greatest impacts on life and livelihoods in Nigeria, especially when droughts coincide with the growing seasons. Three entropy-based methods, namely symmetrical uncertainty, gain ratio, and entropy gain were used in a multi-criteria decision-making framework to select the best performing General Circulation Models (GCMs) for the projection of rainfall and temperature. Performance of four widely used bias correction methods was compared to identify a suitable method for correcting bias in GCM projections for the period 2010-2099. A machine learning technique was then used to generate a multi-model ensemble (MME) of the bias-corrected GCM projection for different RCP scenarios. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was subsequently computed to estimate droughts from the MME mean of GCM projected rainfall and temperature to predict possible spatiotemporal changes in meteorological droughts. Finally, trends in the SPEI, temperature and rainfall, and return period of droughts for different growing seasons were estimated using a 50-year moving window, with a 10-year interval, to understand driving factors accountable for future changes in droughts. The analysis revealed that MRI-CGCM3, HadGEM2-ES, CSIRO-Mk3-6-0, and CESM1-CAM5 are the most appropriate GCMs for projecting rainfall and temperature, and the linear scaling (SCL) is the best method for correcting bias. The MME mean of bias-corrected GCM projections revealed an increase in rainfall in the south-south, southwest, and parts of the northwest whilst a decrease in the southeast, northeast, and parts of central Nigeria. In contrast, rise in temperature for entire country during most of the cropping seasons was projected. The results further indicated that increase in temperature would decrease the SPEI across Nigeria, which will make droughts more frequent in most of the country under all the RCPs. However, increase in drought frequency would be less for higher RCPs due to increase in rainfall.
Drylands face potential threat of robust drought in the CMIP6 SSPs scenarios

Abstract:In an increasingly globalized and warming world, drought can have devastating impacts on regional agriculture, water resources, and the ecological environment. Reliable prediction of future drought changes is especially important within the context of rapid warming. However, the extent and future trends of drought changes are variable and incomplete in the CMIP6 forcing scenarios. Based on the CMIP6 data, we chose the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index to predict future global drought. The results show that when emissions increase under the three shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios (SSP126, SSP245 and SSP585), the global climate environment becomes drier and drought grow more severe and longer-lasting. Regions already classified as arid will suffer even more severe drought under high-emission SSPs. Specifically, 36.2% of global land will experience increased drought under SSP126, including 67.0% of regions designated as arid, with droughts intensifying significantly. Under SSP585, 68.3% of global land will suffer increased drought, with 93.2% of the arid regions experiencing significant drought intensification. Furthermore, the global duration of drought is estimated to be 4.4 months, 5.7 months, and 8.6 months for the time periods 1960–2000, 2021–2060, and 2061–2100, respectively. Notably, for the SSP585 scenario, regions that are already arid may become universally drought-stricken by the late 21st century. The most severe aridification trends may occur in the arid regions of Australia, Middle East, South Africa, Amazon basin, North Africa, Europe, and Central Asia. Additionally, Europe and the Amazon River Basin are also facing the threat of future drought. Increased aridification will put these regions and countries at risk of further land and ecological degradation, as well as increased poverty. The results of this study have far-ranging implications not only for how we deal with the impacts of climate warming-induced drought disaster, but also for how these impacts affect socio-economic and ecological security.

Abstract:Asia currently has the world’s largest arid and semi-arid zones, so a timely assessment of future droughts in the Asian drylands is prudent, particularly in the context of recent frequent sandstorms. This paper assesses the duration, frequency, and intensity of drought events in the Asian drylands based on nine climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The results show that a high percentage of land area is experiencing significant drought intensification of 65.1%, 89.9%, and 99.8% under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP)126, SSP245, and SSP585 scenarios, respectively. Furthermore, the data indicate that future droughts will become less frequent but longer in duration and more intense, with even more severe future droughts predicted for northwest China and western parts of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Drought durations of 10.8 months and 13.4 months are anticipated for the future periods of 2021–2060 and 2061–2100, respectively, compared to the duration of 6.6 months for the historical period (1960–2000). Meanwhile, drought intensity is expected to reach 1.37 and 1.66, respectively, for future events compared to 0.97 for the historical period. However, drought severity under SSP245 will be weaker than that under SSP126 due to the mitigating effect of precipitation. The results of this study can provide a basis for the development of adaptation measures in Asian dryland nations.

Historical and Projected Changes in Extreme High Temperature Events over East Africa and Associated with Meteorological Conditions Using CMIP6 Models

Abstract:Extreme high temperature (EHT) events are the major indicator of global warming and their effect on natural ecosystems and agricultural production. The present study investigates the historical changes and projected trends of EHT events using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) Global Climate Models (GCMs) and observation data in East Africa. The distribution mapping (DM) approach effectively reduces the biases and improves the CMIP6 GCMs to match the observation data. This study considers the intensity of hot days (TXx) and hot nights (TNx) and two frequency indices estimated from the 90th percentile of the hot days (TX90p) and hot nights (TN90p) to evaluate the EHT events. The Mann-Kendall (MK) test and Sens's slope were used to estimate the trend of the EHT indices and significance level. Moreover, a regression approach was utilized to examine the relationship between EHT indices and meteorological conditions during the historical period (1990-2011). The results demonstrate that the recent period (2001-2010) experienced more frequent hot days (similar to 10-15%) and nights (similar to 12-20%) compared to the first decade (similar to 0-7%) (1990-2000) in most of the East Africa region. In addition, most stations across East Africa show a significant positive trend for the frequency of hot nights. The ensemble of the CMIP6 model simulation showed that the EHT events were projected to continue rising during the end of the 21st century (2071-2095). The intensity of hot days and nights is projected to escalate between 1.5 and 3 degrees C and 1-4 degrees C under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. Although, a high upsurge was detected in the frequency of hot nights (similar to 23-30%) during far future (2071-2095) compared to mid-future (2041-2070) under SSP5-8.5 and SSP2-4.5 scenarios. In addition, a strong correlation (R2 = +/- 0.8) was found between meteorological conditions and EHT indices, indicating the influence of atmospheric circulation on extreme temperature over East Africa. Our study provides valuable information regarding developing new policies and early warning systems for water resource managers and policymakers.
Characterizing the aridity indices and potential evapotranspiration using CMIP6-GCMs in two distinct regions of Ethiopia

Abstract:Using an ensemble of three global climate models, the current study aims to estimate climate change and quantify the changes in the aridity and evapotranspiration of two distinct areas in Ethiopia. To adjust for bias in the climate dataset, the Hydrological Modeling Tool (CMhyd) was used. These studies were initially run using station data and employed the shared socioeconomic pathways scenarios for the short-range (2011–2040) years and medium-range (2041–2070) years. Climate-related aridity is measured using the De Martone and United Nations Environment Programme aridity indices. The study's findings for the western and eastern catchments for the reference period (1981–2010) years reveal an average annual temperature rise of 1.5 and 0.06 °C and a drop in annual precipitation of 15.73 and 3.68 mm/year, respectively. These alter the climate in the geographical areas that have historically supported drought. Evapotranspiration in the western and eastern catchments may grow by up to 24.6 and 21.6%, respectively, by the 2070s. The observation implies that the western catchment may experience more pronounced climate change and volatility than the eastern one. The consequences of this observation influence agriculture, water resource management, and the social and economic well-being of those living in drought-prone areas.

Abstract:This work examines drought and flood events over Kenya from 1981 to 2016 using the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The spatiotemporal analysis of dry and wet events was conducted for 3 and 12 months. Extreme drought incidences were observed in the years 1987, 2000, 2006, and 2009 for SPEI-3, whilst the SPEI-12 demonstrated the manifestation of drought during the years 2000 and 2006. The SPEI showed that the wettest periods, 1997 and 1998, coincided with the El Nino event for both time steps. SPEI-3 showed a reduction in moderate drought events, while severe and extreme cases were on the increase tendencies towards the end of the twentieth century. Conversely, SPEI-12 depicted an overall increase in severe drought occurrence over the study location with ab observed intensity of −1.54 and a cumulative frequency of 64 months during the study period. Wet events showed an upward trend in the western and central highlands, while the rest of the regions showed an increase in dry events during the study period. Moreover, moderate dry/wet events predominated, whilst extreme events occurred least frequently across all grid cells. It is apparent that the study area experienced mild extreme dry events in both categories, although moderately severe dry events dominated most parts of the study area. A high intensity and frequency of drought was noted in SPEI-3, while the least occurrences of extreme events were recorded in SPEI-12. Though drought event prevailed across the study area, there was evidence of extreme flood conditions over the recent decades. These findings form a good basis for next step of research that will look at the projection of droughts over the study area based on regional climate models.

Abstract:Droughts are among the most common and widespread natural disasters, severely affecting several aspects of human society. It is of vital importance to assess the drought impacts under climate change. Herein, we investigated the evolution and characteristics of drought for both historical (1980–2019) and future (2020–2100) periods in China under three representative pathways (SSP1_26, SSP2_45, and SSP5_85) using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index and multiple Global Climate Models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6. Further, we evaluated the changes in population exposure to drought for the near (2020–2059) and distant (2060–2100) future by combining the drought frequency with the projected population from the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). The results showed that drought areas and intensities would generally decrease slightly in the near future but would increase substantially in the distant future. Moderate droughts would occur more frequently under all scenarios in the near future, whereas severe and extreme droughts would be more frequent in the distant future. In the near future, population exposure to moderate, severe, and extreme droughts would increase by 15.3%, 31.8%, and 68.0%, respectively, under SSP1_26, whereas it would decrease by 31.9%, 50.2%, and 62.3%, respectively, under SSP5_85. At the end of this century, a widespread increase in exposure to severe and extreme droughts is likely under SSP2_45 and an increase in exposure to all types of droughts is likely under SSP5_85; the greatest increase in exposure (83.8%) is found in the case of extreme drought under SSP5_85. In summary, population exposures varied among different study periods and climate scenarios in China. Therefore, this study calls for both short- and long-term drought mitigation and adaptation measures for potential climate change in China.

Abstract:Abstract We analyze data of 27 global climate models from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), and examine projected changes in temperature and precipitation over the African continent during the twenty-first century. The temperature and precipitation changes are computed for two future time slices, 2030–2059 (near term) and 2070–2099 (long term), relative to the present climate (1981–2010), for the entire African continent and its eight subregions. The CMIP6 multi-model ensemble projected a continuous and significant increase in the mean annual temperature over all of Africa and its eight subregions during the twenty-first century. The mean annual temperature over Africa for the near (long)-term period is projected to increase by 1.2 °C (1.4 °C), 1.5 °C (2.3 °C), and 1.8 °C (4.4 °C) under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) for weak, moderate, and strong forcing, referenced as SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5, respectively. The future warming is not uniform over Africa and varies regionally. By the end of the twenty-first century, the largest rise in mean annual temperature (5.6 °C) is projected over the Sahara, while the smallest rise (3.5 °C) is over Central East Africa, under the strong forcing SSP5-8.5 scenario. The projected boreal winter and summer temperature patterns for the twenty-first century show spatial distributions similar to the annual patterns. Uncertainty associated with projected temperature over Africa and its eight subregions increases with time and reaches a maximum by the end of the twenty-first century. On the other hand, the precipitation projections over Africa during the twenty-first century show large spatial variability and seasonal dependency. The northern and southern parts of Africa show a reduction in precipitation, while the central parts of Africa show an increase, in future climates under the three reference scenarios. For the near (long)-term periods, the area-averaged precipitation over Africa is projected to increase by 6.2 (4.8)%, 6.8 (8.5)%, and 9.5 (15.2)% under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5, respectively. The median warming simulated by the CMIP6 model ensemble remains higher than the CMIP5 ensemble over most of Africa, reaching as high as 2.5 °C over some regions, while precipitation shows a mixed spatial pattern.
Exploring future trends of precipitation and runoff in arid regions under different scenarios based on a bias-corrected CMIP6 model

Abstract:Precipitation and runoff changes play a very important role in ecosystems and human well-being. Predicting its changes is critical for water resource management and coping with climate change. However, corresponding studies in arid regions are limited by lack of data and poor spatial distribution of meteorological stations. Therefore, this study identified the applicability of multi-source meteorological data in a typical arid region, the Shiyang River Basin, by comparing its variability with measured precipitation. Then, the best applicable precipitation product was selected to correct the data of CMIP6, and to predict the change of precipitation and runoff under the scenarios of SSP126/245/585 by 2100. The results showed that the CMADS dataset was more consistent with the measured data than TRMM and CFSR. Through Taylor diagram analysis and equidistant cumulative distribution functions matching (EDCDF) method bias correction, the GFDL-ESM4 model was more suitable for arid regions in terms of precipitation and temperature. During 2015-2100, the annual precipitation and average annual temperature under each scenario all showed an increasing trend. However, the monthly precipitation from May to October showed a decreasing trend, indicating an increase in precipitation during spring and winter, and a decrease during summer and autumn. The average temperature for all months from January to December showed an increasing trend. However, in arid regions, the temperature increase is more pronounced during colder months (1-3) compared to hotter months (6-9). The average annual runoff of SSP126 scenario showed an increasing trend from 2015 to 2100 (SSP126: 0.004/yr), while the runoff from the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios showed a decreasing trend (SSP245: -0.031/yr; SSPSSP585: -0.084/yr). This is primarily attributed to a small increment of precipitation and a larger increment of temperature, an early melting of glacial snow and an increasing of evapotranspiration, which in turn leads to a reduction in annual runoff. The research can help achieving sustainable development, effective management of water resources in arid regions, and provide a reference and example for related research in high-resolution.

Abstract:Global warming has altered the thermodynamic and dynamic environments of the climate system, thus affecting the energy budget and water cycle process of the land-atmosphere system. Under changes in key hydrological elements such as precipitation, runoff, and terrestrial water storage, future drought variation remains a complex question. Existing studies have utilized terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) in drought monitoring and assessment, but they usually focused on either drought duration or intensity, overlooking the multi-faced attributes of droughts as well as their socioeconomic impacts under a non-stationary condition. In this study, we first identify dry/wet conditions over China using GRACE/GRACE-FO satellite observations, and then evaluate the feedback effects of humidity and energy factors (e.g., sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, atmospheric relative humidity, and convective available potential energy) to drought events. Future changes in TWSA and dry/wet conditions are projected by eight Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models (GCMs) under three shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), with their biases corrected by a trend-preserving quantile mapping method. The time-varying Copula function of drought duration and intensity is constructed by a moving windows method, and future bivariate drought risks are quantified with the most likely realization method. The population and GDP affected by increasing drought risks are finally quantified based on the SSPs data. It is found that the land-atmosphere coupling effects closely interact with drought evolution, and the uneven distribution of water resources is projected to be further aggravated, with most areas of China will be threatened by continuous drying tendency. By the end of the century, the duration of moderate, severe and exceptional droughts in some regions of China will double, and the drought intensity will increase by over 80%. For the 50-year bivariate droughts during the historical period, their occurrence may increase by 5–10 times in several regions, and might affect about 35–55% of China's population and GDP at the end of 21st century.

Abstract:Model simulations show that drought may become more severe and widespread in the 21st century due to human-induced global warming. However, the contributions from the key factors to the model-projected drought changes in China have not yet been examined in detail. We used the self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index with Penman–Monteith potential evapotranspiration (scPDSIpm) based on 10 model simulations selected from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). We investigated the contributions from precipitation (P), near-surface air temperature and specific humidity [Δ( T + q )], net surface longwave radiation (LW), net surface shortwave radiation (SW), and wind speed (WS) to the future changes in scPDSIpm, including the long-term mean, drying area, probability distribution function (PDF), drought frequency, and drought duration based on the scPDSIpm over China. Our results show that model-projected drying mainly occurs over southern China, whereas the dry areas under drought conditions increase from 20% to about 23%/30% under the two scenarios of the shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP2-4.5/SSP5-8.5) from 1985 to 2100, despite large uncertainties in individual projections partly due to internal variability. Drought frequency is projected to increases by about 10%–54% (15%–88%) under the SSP2-4.5 (SSP5-8.5) scenario by the late 21st century, along with increases in drought duration. These changes are accompanied by a decrease in the mean scPDSIpm and flattening of the PDFs. The changes in drying over southern China are mainly attributed to surface warming and the increased surface vapor pressure deficit (VPD), with small contributions from changes in the surface net radiation. The changes in wetting over northern China mostly result from increased precipitation along with a small wetting effect from the changes in wind speed.

Abstract:Future changes in drought events are critical for risk assessment and associated policymaking. In this study, the future changes in meteorological droughts in Henan Province, China are explored. Random forests downscaling model is first constructed based on ERA5 reanalysis data and meteorological observations. The model is validated using evaluation indices such as R2 and RMSE, and is shown to be able to capture the relationship between large-scale predictors and monthly precipitation. The validated random forests downscaling model is driven by multiple global climate models (GCMs) from the Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) under three emission scenarios for projecting three future drought characteristics (duration, frequency, and intensity). Results show that drought frequency decreases in most areas of Henan while drought duration and intensity increase in various degrees. Some differences are also observed among different emission scenarios, especially under SSP2–4.5, where the magnitudes of changes in drought duration and intensity are lower relative to other scenarios. The decrease in drought frequency in most areas is found to be caused by increases in monthly mean precipitation in this study. Changes in drought duration and intensity are related to a combination of increases in precipitation mean and variability.

Abstract:The greenhouse effect continues to cause unparalleled changes in drought conditions in regions like Dukan basin. Even though droughts have been increasing in terms of occurrence and intensification in Iraq, limited studies have been conducted to predict future drought events with their characteristics under different climate forcing scenarios. This study was done in the Dukan basin to evaluate future drought characteristics, namely magnitude, duration, intensity, and frequency, using four climate models from CMIP6 under Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) for two distinct periods of 2020–2050 (near future) and 2050–2080 (far future). The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) data was dynamically downscaled and then bias corrected using a quantile mapping (QM) approach, with the Climatic Research Units (CRU TS4.04) rainfall data as locus. AgriMetSoft SD-GCM tool was used to downscale the station data. Drought characteristics were characterized at a 12-month scale using the runs theory in AgriMetSoft Drought Monitoring and Prediction (DMAP) software. Among the four CMIP6 models used, the BCC_ESM2_0 was accurate ( R 2 = 0.952, RMSE = 16.4) than the other models in projecting precipitation. The results indicated that drought regimes with magnitudes from − 0.08 to − 1.4 will intensify from 2024 to 2030. The lowest SPI values ( ) were observed under SSP2.6 D2 and the highest SPI values ( ) were observed under SSP8.5 D2. Except for SSP2.6 D1, all other scenarios projected frequent drought regimes in the region with high magnitudes and prolonged durations. The findings also showed significant ( p < 0.05) temporal variability in precipitation particularly for SSP585 scenarios. Remarkably, the findings of this study provide a basis for the formulation of drought preparedness, risk reduction, and management policies in Iraq.

Abstract:Droughts are increasingly frequent as the Earth warms, presenting adaptation challenges for ecosystems and human communities worldwide. A strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and the integration of adaptation strategies into policies, plans, and programs (PPP) are two important approaches for enhancing climate resilience and fostering sustainable development. This study developed an innovative approach to strengthen the SEA of droughts by quantifying the impacts of future temperature increases. A novel method for projecting drought events was integrated into the SEA process by leveraging multiple data sources, including atmospheric reanalysis, reconstructions, satellite-based observations, and model simulations. We identified drought conditions using terrestrial water storage (TWS) anomalies and applied a random forest (RF) model for disentangling the drivers behind drought events. We then set two global warming targets (2.0 °C and 2.5 °C) and analyzed drought changes under three shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP126, SSP370, SSP585). In a 2.0 °C warming world, over 50 % of the global surface will face increased drought risk. With an additional 0.5 °C increase, >60 % of the land will be prone to further drought escalation. We utilized copulas to build the joint distribution for drought duration and severity, estimating the joint return periods (JRP) for bivariate drought hazard. In tropical and subtropical regions, JRP reductions exceeding half are projected for >33 % of the regional land surface under 2.0 °C warming and for >50 % under 2.5 °C warming. Finally, we projected the impacts of drought events on population and gross domestic product (GDP). Among the three SSPs, under SSP370, population exposure is highest and GDP exposure is minimal under 2.0 °C warming. Global GDP and population risks from drought are projected to increase by 37 % and 24 %, respectively, as warming continues. This study enhances the accuracy of SEA in addressing drought risks and vulnerabilities, supporting climate-resilient planning and adaptive strategies.
