Abstract:Gender and language effects on the long-term average speech spectrum (LTASS) have been reported, but typically using recordings that were bandlimited and/or failed to accurately capture extended high frequencies (EHFs). Accurate characterization of the full-band LTASS is warranted given recent data on the contribution of EHFs to speech perception. The present study characterized the LTASS for high-fidelity, anechoic recordings of males and females producing Bamford-Kowal-Bench (BKB) sentences, digits, and unscripted narratives. Gender had an effect on spectral levels at both ends of the spectrum: males had higher levels than females below approximately 160 Hz, owing to lower fundamental frequencies; females had ~4 dB higher levels at EHFs, but this effect was dependent on speech material. Gender differences were also observed at ~300 Hz, and between 800-1000 Hz, as previously reported. Despite differences in phonetic content, there were only small, gender-dependent differences in EHF levels across speech materials. EHF levels were highly correlated across materials, indicating relative consistency within talkers. Our findings suggest that LTASS levels at EHFs are influenced primarily by talker and gender, highlighting the need for future research to assess whether EHF cues are more audible for female speech than for male speech.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of decreased estrogen levels due to menopause on auditory brainstem response measurements (ABR).STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.SETTING: Academic.PATIENTS: Pre- and post-menopausal females (pre-M, post-M) and age-matched males.METHODS: ABR measurements of wave I, III, and V latencies, and interpeak latencies; amplitudes of waves I, III, V, and V/I ratio.OUTCOME MEASURE: Differences in ABR measurements between pre-M and post-M.RESULTS: 164 subjects (101 female and 64 male) were included. Post-M had significantly greater latencies (msec) than pre-M of wave V. Post-M had a significantly smaller wave I amplitude (uV) than pre-M. Post-M had a significantly higher wave V/I amplitude ratio than pre-M. Pre-M had significantly shorter latencies than young males for wave III, and wave V. Post-M had significantly shorter latencies than older males at wave III, and wave V. A two-way ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between the effects of age category and gender on V/I amplitude.CONCLUSION: Post-M group showed a significant drop in wave I amplitude compared with pre-M group, even in the absence of hearing loss, suggesting that the gender differences in hearing are related to estrogen signaling along the auditory pathway. If wave I amplitude changes between older and younger groups resulted from decreased peripheral hearing sensitivity, we would expect larger drops in amplitude in males since rates of presbycusis are higher. We observed much larger drops in wave I amplitude in females, which cannot be attributed to peripheral hearing loss. These results may assist in understanding gender differences in presbycusis and a possible protective effect of estrogen on the auditory system. Knowledge of gender differences in wave I may be important when ABR is used to assess possible synaptopathy.

The Effects of Aging on the Brain Stem Speech Encoding in Spontaneous Post-menopause Women

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of aging on the brain stem speech encoding in spontaneous post-menopause women.Methods There were twenty post-menopause women with normal hearing for test and twenty ovariectomized women with normal hearing for contrast.Speech-evoked auditory brainstem response(speech-ABR)was used.The speech syllable/da/as stimulus sound was transmitted to right ear by the insert earphones in speech-ABR test.Results Response waves of speech-ABR in ovariectomized women were similar to those in post-menopause women,which contained the onset response(peak V and A),the transition(peak C),the frequency following responses(peak D,E and F)and the offset response(peak O).The characteristics of speech-ABR’s peak latency and magnitude were similar between the two groups.Except that the bilateral ovariectomized women had a shorter latency of waves O for the transient response(P<0.01),the larger amplitude of peak F for the periodic portion than post-menopause women(P<0.05).No significant differences were found in the amplitude the latency of the other waves,and V/A slope between bilateral ovariectomized women(0.21±0.10μV/ms)and post-menopause women(-0.20±0.09μV/ms)was similar and had no statistical significance(P>0.05).After the combination of ovariectomized women and post-menopause women,the age of these subjects was positively correlated with the latency of O wave(P<0.05).Others had no correlation with age in the amplitude and latency of the waves of speech-ABR.Conclusion Aging does not affect on brain stem speech encoding in spontaneous post-menopause women.
Fundamental frequency predominantly drives talker differences in auditory brainstem responses to continuous speech

Abstract:Deriving human neural responses to natural speech is now possible, but the responses to male- and female-uttered speech have been shown to differ. These talker differences may complicate interpretations or restrict experimental designs geared toward more realistic communication scenarios. This study found that when a male and female talker had the same fundamental frequency, auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were very similar. Those responses became smaller and later with increasing fundamental frequency, as did click ABRs with increasing stimulus rates. Modeled responses suggested that the speech and click ABR differences were reasonably predicted by peripheral and brainstem processing of stimulus acoustics.

Abstract:Summary Objective To investigate how listeners use fundamental frequency, implied vocal tract length, and source spectral tilt to infer speaker gender. Methods Sound files each containing the vowels /i, æ, ɑ, u/ interspersed by brief silences were synthesized. Each of the 210 stimuli was a combination of 10 values for fundamental frequency and 7 values for implied vocal tract length (and the associated formant frequencies) ranging from male-typical to female-typical, and 3 values for source spectral tilt approximating the voice qualities of breathy, normal, and pressed. Twenty-three listeners judged each synthesized "speaker" as "female" or "male." Generalized linear mixed model analysis was used to determine the extent to which fundamental frequency, implied vocal track length, and spectral tilt influenced listener judgment. Results Increasing fundamental frequency and decreasing implied vocal tract length resulted in increased probability of female judgment. Two interactions were identified: An increase in fundamental frequency and also a decrease in source spectral tilt (more negative) resulted in a greater increase in the probability of female judgment when the vocal tract length was relatively short. Conclusions The relationships among fundamental frequency, implied vocal tract length, source spectral tilt, and probability of female judgment changed across the range of normal values, suggesting that the relative contributions of fundamental frequency and implied vocal tract length to gender perception varied over the ranges studied. There was no threshold of fundamental frequency or implied vocal tract length that dramatically shifted the perception between male and female.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The auditory structures of the brainstem are involved in binaural interaction, which contributes to sound location and auditory figure-background perception. Objective To investigate the performance of young adults in the masking level difference (MLD) test, brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) with click stimulus, and frequency-following response (FFR), as well as to verify the correlation between the findings, considering the topographic origin of the components of these procedures. Methods A total of 20 female subjects between 18 and 30 years of age, with normal hearing and no complaints concerning central auditory processing underwent a basic audiological evaluation, as well as the MLD test, BAEP and FFR. Results The mean result on the MLD test was of 10.70 dB. There was a statistically significant difference in the absolute latencies of waves I, III and V in the BAEPs of the ears. A change in the FFR characterized by the absence of the C, E and F waves was noticed. There was a statistically significant difference in the positive correlation of wave V in the BAEPs with the MLD. There was a statistically significant difference in the positive correlation of the mean MLD and the V, A and F components of the FFR. Conclusion The mean MLD was adequate. In the BAEPs, we observed that the click stimulus transmission occurred faster in the right ear. The FFR showed absence of some components. The mean MLD correlated positively with the BAEPs and FFR.
Gender differences in gating of the auditory evoked potential in normal subjects

Abstract:Central nervous system (CNS) inhibitory mechanisms hypothesized to "gate" repetitive sensory inputs have been implicated in the pathology of schizophrenia. The present study investigated gender differences in inhibitory gating of evoked brain responses to repeated stimuli in normal subjects (30 women and 30 men) using an auditory conditioning-testing paradigm. Pairs of click stimuli (S1 and S2) were presented with a 0.5 s intrapair and a 10 s interpair interval. The amplitudes and latencies of the P50, N100, P180 components of the auditory evoked response to the conditioning (S1) and test response (S2) were measured, and the gating ratios were computed (T/C ratio = S2/S1 * 100). The amplitudes to S1 were not significantly different between men and women at P50, N100, or P180. However, women had significantly higher amplitudes to S2 at P50 (p = 0.03) and N100 (p = 0.04). The T/C ratios for women were higher (i.e., less suppression of response to S2) for P50 (p = 0.08) and N100 (p = 0.04) compared to men. The results suggested that differences in auditory gating between men and women were not due to biological differences in the P50 and N100 generators but possibly to differential influence of inhibitory mechanisms acting on the generator substrates of these evoked responses.
Sex differences in preattentive perception of emotional voices and acoustic attributes

Abstract:Sex stereotypes consider women to be superior in terms of voice sensitivity. However, whether such sex differences are driven by voice perception per se or by low-level acoustic attributes remains unclear. Using a passive auditory oddball paradigm, we studied the emotionally spoken meaningless syllables 'dada' (neutral, happy, fearful) along with corresponding nonvocal sounds in female and male adults. Mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a were identified in the waveforms obtained by subtraction of the responses to standard stimuli from the deviant stimuli. Results showed that MMN in response to fearful syllables was stronger in women, whereas MMN elicited by nonvocal sounds was comparable between sexes. This sex effect was specifically found in MMN, but not in P3a. These findings suggest that sex differences in voice sensitivity are selectively driven by voice perception. The sex effect in preattentive processing of emotional voices may further implicate possible etiological pathways for mental disorders characterized by disturbance in emotional processes as well as disparities in the prevalence between sexes.

Abstract:Some studies find delayed development of the auditory brainstem in preterm infants, but others do not.To compare auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in healthy preterm and term infants depending on sex and gestational age (GA).Participants were 111 preterm (27-36weeks GA) and 92 term (37-41weeks GA) infants. ABR tests were conducted at 6weeks (corrected age if preterm).There were no overall differences between term and preterm groups in ABRs. However, males showed longer latencies for waves III, V, and I-III, III-V, and I-V intervals and smaller amplitudes for wave III and V than females in both preterm and term groups (all p values≤.01). A 3-way interaction between group, sex, and GA (p<.05) showed that preterm males with later GA had longer wave I-V interval, whereas term females with later GA showed shorter wave I-V interval. Growth velocity predicted wave I-V interval in preterm infants, controlling for other factors (male: p=.07, female: p<.05).ABRs in preterm and term infants were similar at 6weeks (corrected age if preterm), but males had less advanced ABRs than females. More rapid growth predicted less mature ABR in later GA preterm infants in this setting where they were unlikely to receive extra iron. The roles of GA, growth, and iron balance in ABR development warrant further study.
Factors underlying masking release by voice-gender differences and spatial separation cues in multi-talker listening environments in listeners with and without hearing loss

Abstract:Voice-gender differences and spatial separation are important cues for auditory object segregation. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship of voice-gender difference benefit to the breadth of binaural pitch fusion, the perceptual integration of dichotic stimuli that evoke different pitches across ears, and the relationship of spatial separation benefit to localization acuity, the ability to identify the direction of a sound source. Twelve bilateral hearing aid (HA) users (age from 30 to 75 years) and eleven normal hearing (NH) listeners (age from 36 to 67 years) were tested in the following three experiments. First, speech-on-speech masking performance was measured as the threshold target-to-masker ratio (TMR) needed to understand a target talker in the presence of either same- or different-gender masker talkers. These target-masker gender combinations were tested with two spatial configurations (maskers co-located or 60° symmetrically spatially separated from the target) in both monaural and binaural listening conditions. Second, binaural pitch fusion range measurements were conducted using harmonic tone complexes around a 200-Hz fundamental frequency. Third, absolute localization acuity was measured using broadband (125-8000 Hz) noise and one-third octave noise bands centered at 500 and 3000 Hz. Voice-gender differences between target and maskers improved TMR thresholds for both listener groups in the binaural condition as well as both monaural (left ear and right ear) conditions, with greater benefit in co-located than spatially separated conditions. Voice-gender difference benefit was correlated with the breadth of binaural pitch fusion in the binaural condition, but not the monaural conditions, ruling out a role of monaural abilities in the relationship between binaural fusion and voice-gender difference benefits. Spatial separation benefit was not significantly correlated with absolute localization acuity. In addition, greater spatial separation benefit was observed in NH listeners than in bilateral HA users, indicating a decreased ability of HA users to benefit from spatial release from masking (SRM). These findings suggest that sharp binaural pitch fusion may be important for maximal speech perception in multi-talker environments for both NH listeners and bilateral HA users.

Abstract:Autism, Ahead of Print. Autistic adults are often perceived as having an atypical speech. The acoustic characteristics of these impressions prove surprisingly difficult to delineate, but one feature that does robustly emerge across different studies is higher pitch (F0 values) in autistic versus neurotypical individuals. However, there is no clear explanation why autistic individuals should have higher-pitched voices. We propose that the solution lies in the gender imbalance still prevalent in autism, which entails an overrepresentation of male participants in research on speech in autism. We analyse speech samples from a gender-balanced group of 40 autistic and 40 neurotypical adults, controlling for potential stress levels through electrodermal activity recordings. We find that autistic males tend to have higher pitch than neurotypical males, but that autistic females tend to have lower pitch than neurotypical females. The interpretation we put forth for our finding – that the autistic versus neurotypical group difference in pitch goes in opposite directions between males and females – is that autistic individuals tend to be less influenced by neurotypical gender stereotypes.Lay abstractIt is has often been observed that autistic individuals have higher-pitched voices than non-autistic ones, but no clear explanation for this difference has been put forth. However, autistic males are still dramatically over-represented in published research, including the acoustic studies that report higher pitch in autistic participants. In this study, we collected speech samples from a group of autistic and neurotypical adults that, unlike in most studies, was perfectly balanced between groups and genders. In this gender-balanced sample, pitch was significantly higher in autistic versus neurotypical men, but lower in autistic versus neurotypical women. Overall, women tend to have higher-pitched voices than men, but the magnitude of this difference is culture dependent and may be significantly influenced by the internalisation of normative expectations towards one's gender. We propose that higher pitch in autistic males and lower pitch in autistic females could be due, at least in part, to a lesser integration of sociolinguistic markers of gender. Our report shows that speech atypicality should not be operationalised in terms of systematic and unidirectional deviation from the neurotypical baseline.

Abstract:Objective:To observe the characteristics of auditory evoked potential P50 in normal controls and effects of gender and age.Methods:Auditory evoked potentials P50 were recorded in 153 normal controls[(divided into age group I(younger than 50)and age group II(older than 50)]by conditioning(S1)-testing(S2)paradigm presented with auditory double clicks,using a 64 channels ERP instrument.Results:(1)Age group II demonstrated lager S2 amplitudes than age group I.But only in female subjects,the difference of S2 amplitudes between two age groups[(2.44±1.68)μV vs.(1.15±1.09)μV,P<0.01)]was statistically significant.(2)Age group II demonstrated smaller S1-S2 amplitude than age group I.But only in male subjects,there was a significant difference of S1-S2 amplitudes between two age groups[(1.80±0.94)μV vs.(2.73±1.93)μV,P<0.05)].(3)Age group II demonstrated higher S2/S1 ratio than age group I.In female subjects,the difference of S2/S1 ration between two age groups[(58.17±42.06)vs.(31.52±31.60),P<0.01)]was statistically significant.In male subjects,there was a similar difference of S2/S1 ratio between two age groups[(41.00±31.88)vs.(25.78±36.28),P=0.09)].(4)There were significant main effects and interactive effects of age and gender on S2 amplitudes(P<0.01).A significant main effect of age on S2/S1 ratio exhibited(P<0.01).(5)There was a significant positive correlation between age and S2/S1 ratio in female subjects(r=0.30,P<0.01).No similar correlation between age and S2/S1 ratio demonstrated in male subjects.Conclusion:Auditory can evoke potential P50 affected by gender and age in normal subjects.Auditory gating of people elder than 50 maybe become weaker,especially in females.

Abstract:While selective attention is known to modulate speech encoding in cortical responses, it is unclear whether such modulation also occurs in brainstem responses. The present study investigates the impact of selective attention on brainstem responses to consonant-vowel stimuli. The study examined auditory brainstem responses to dichotically delivered /ba/ and /da/ in 15 normal hearing subjects (8 males). Subjects were asked to selectively attend to a stimulus, and their responses were evaluated using the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and phase difference comparison. Our findings reveal significant changes in the mean phase values for brainstem responses during selective attention. The mean phase values in brainstem responses to da were consistently positive, whereas those in brainstem responses to ba were consistently negative compared to responses without attention. In the steady-state region, the mean difference of the brainstem responses varied in the high frequency (-0.022±0.008, 0.021±0.007) and middle frequency (-0.026±0.008, 0.024±0.007) ranges. Furthermore, the high frequency of the transitional part of the response changed (-0.024±0.01, 0.033±0.009) when attention was directed to /ba/ and /da/, respectively. Our findings suggest that selective attention can significantly alter brainstem responses during auditory processing, resulting in significant phase changes in both the middle and high-frequency ranges.

Molecular and Cellular Pathobiology Inhibiting Interactions of Lysine Demethylase LSD 1 with Snail / Slug Blocks Cancer Cell Invasion

Abstract:The process of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) which is required for cancer cell invasion is regulated by a family of E-box–binding transcription repressors, which include Snail (SNAIL1) and Slug (SNAI2). Snail appears to repress the expression of the EMT marker E-cadherin by epigenetic mechanisms dependent on the interaction of its N-terminal SNAG domain with chromatin-modifying proteins including lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1/KDM1A). We assessed whether blocking Snail/Slug-LSD1 interaction by treatment with Parnate, an enzymatic inhibitor of LSD1, or TAT-SNAG, a cell-permeable peptide corresponding to the SNAG domain of Slug, suppresses the motility and invasiveness of cancer cells of different origin and genetic background. We show here that either treatment blocked Slug-dependent repression of the E-cadherin promoter and inhibited the motility and invasion of tumor cell lines without any effect on their proliferation. These effects correlatedwith induction of epithelial and repression ofmesenchymalmarkers andwere phenocopied by LSD1 or Slug downregulation. Parnate treatment also inhibited bone marrow homing/engraftment of Slug-expressing K562 cells. Together, these studies support the concept that targeting Snail/Slug-dependent transcription repression complexes may lead to the development of novel drugs selectively inhibiting the invasive potential of cancer cells. Binaural responses to a speech syllable are altered in children with hearing loss: Evidence from the frequency-following response

Abstract:Background & rationale: In prior work using non-speech stimuli, children with hearing loss show impaired perception of binaural cues and no significant change in cortical responses to bilateral versus unilateral stimulation. Aims of the present study were to: 1) identify bilateral responses to envelope and spectral components of a speech syllable using the frequency-following response (FFR), 2) determine if abnormalities in the bilateral FFR occur in children with hearing loss, and 3) assess functional consequences of abnormal bilateral FFR responses on perception of binaural timing cues. Methods: A single-syllable speech stimulus (/dα/) was presented to each ear individually and bilaterally. Participants were 9 children with normal hearing (MAge = 12.1 ± 2.5 years) and 6 children with bilateral hearing loss who were experienced bilateral hearing aid users (MAge = 14.0 ± 2.6 years). FFR temporal and spectral peak amplitudes were compared between listening conditions and groups using linear mixed model regression analyses. Behavioral sensitivity to binaural cues were measured by lateralization responses as coming from the right or left side of the head. Results: Both temporal and spectral peaks in FFR responses increased in amplitude in the bilateral compared to unilateral listening conditions in children with normal hearing. These measures of "bilateral advantage" were reduced in the group of children with bilateral hearing loss and associated with decreased sensitivity to interaural timing differences. Conclusion: This study is the first to show that bilateral responses in both temporal and spectral domains can be measured in children using the FFR and is altered in children with hearing loss with consequences to binaural hearing.

Abstract:ObjectiveIn recent studies, cochlear synaptopathy has been suggested as a potential pathophysiology mechanism for tinnitus, which occurs in individuals with normal hearing thresholds. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is a noninvasive method frequently used in the literature to evaluate cochlear synaptopathy in tinnitus patients. However, possible factors such as high-frequency pure-tone hearing thresholds, age, gender, and head characteristics that may affect ABR were not considered sufficiently in previous studies. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate tinnitus ears and non-tinnitus ears with ABR in unilateral chronic tinnitus patients with symmetrical hearing.MethodsTwenty unilateral chronic tinnitus patients having normal pure-tone average with symmetrical hearing thresholds was included in the study. Subjects were evaluated with 0.25–16 kHz pure-tone audiometry, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and ABR were administered. All ears were evaluated monaurally using click stimuli at 80 dB nHL, alternating polarity (21.1 rate/s, 2000 sweeps).ResultsWave I amplitude of the ABR and the ratio of III/I, V/I, and V/III wave amplitudes from tinnitus ears was higher than non-tinnitus ears. At the same time, there was a positive correlation between THI and V–I and V–III interpeak latency range, and a negative correlation between V/III wave amplitude ratio.ConclusionABR can be used as an evaluation method to provide evidence that the neural organizations of individuals with chronic tinnitus differ in certain regions in their auditory pathways. The correlation between THI and ABR findings suggests that there may be a connection between tinnitus distress and the neural organization of the auditory system.

The Effects of Speaker Head Posture on Auditory Perception of Vocal Masculinity

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of head position on listeners' perception of vocal masculinity. Methods: Twelve cisgender women were recorded reciting two voiced sentences with varying head positions: baseline, flexed, and extended. Voice samples were cropped and fundamental frequency (fo) was resynthesized to control for any changes in fo across conditions. Twelve cisgender adults were recruited as listeners. Listeners were presented with 144 paired comparisons of speaker samples and were prompted to select the sample that sounded more masculine in each presented pairing. Ratings of masculinity were analyzed using Thurstone's law of comparative judgment. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) assessed the effects of head positioning, followed by Dunnett's posthoc tests. Results: The ANOVA showed a statistically significant effect of head position on listener perceptions of masculinity: speech in the flexed position was perceived as statistically more masculine than that in the baseline condition. Conclusions: The results of this study support the use of head posture manipulation to achieve increased vocal masculinity, which adds to the limited research related to voice masculinization strategies for those seeking gender-affirming voice care.
Speech-ABR Representations and Non-lateralization Effect for the Stimulation Intensity

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of stimulation intensity on subcortical auditory processing of speech and assess the subcortical asymmetry of speech elements at the brainstem level using speech evoked auditory brainstem response (s-ABR) ,so as to provide more clues for the mechanism of speech cognitive behaviors .Meth‐ods Speech syllables /da/with three intensities(40 dB HL ,60 dB HL and 80 dB HL) were presented monaurally to 29 normal hearing adults ,and corresponding s-ABRs were recorded .The stimulus and response parameters ,inclu‐ding latency and amplitude in time domain ,fundamental frequency and formants in frequency domain were analyzed statistically .Results With the increase of stimulation intensity ,significant shorter latency and larger amplitude were observed for the feature peaks of s-ABR (P<0 .05) .The latency changes corresponding to the same intensity increment were at variance with the periodic components and the transient components .The fundamental frequency and formants of the stimulus syllables that extracted preferably from s - ABRs were encoded less vigorously in ascending order which was the same as that for the intensity .The responses to the right and left monaural stimula‐tion resembled without significant lateralized difference .Conclusion The s -ABR is able to encode faithfully the speech sound in terms of timing and spectrum components with high correspondence with the stimulus intensity .The different latency characteristics of periodic components and transient responses may imply more underlying coding information of speech sound .However ,lateral asymmetry speech processing is not considerable at the brainstem level .

Abstract:Summary Objective Determine if acoustic measurements exist that are predictive of Auditory-Perceptual Assessment (APA) of gender expression in the voice of transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender Brazilian speakers by transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender judges, as well as speech-language pathologists in the area of voice studies. Methods Cross-sectional study. Clips of speech (automatic speech and expressive reading of poetry) and sustained vowel emission of people of different genders were recorded and underwent APA for gender expression in the voice using a visual analog scale across 100 points, ranging from very masculine to very feminine. Sixteen acoustic measurements were extracted (noise, perturbation, spectral, and cepstral measurements). A descriptive and inferential analysis was performed using interclass coefficients of correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression, considering P < 0.05 for statistical significance. Results Forty-seven people of different genders had their voices recorded. The perceived gender of these voices was judged by 236 people (65 speech-language pathologists, 101 cisgender people, and 70 transgender and nonbinary people). The perceptions and measurements that were predictive of gender perception in the voice differed according to the task (vowel or speech) and the group of judges. The predictive acoustic measurements that were common in all groups were: speech—median F0, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), F0 standard deviation (F0sd), average width between F0 peaks, and spectral emphasis (Emph); vowels—median F0, HNR, F0sd, and average width between F0 peaks. Divergent measurements between groups were: speech—coefficient of variation of intensity, speech rate (Sr), minimum and maximum F0, jitter, and shimmer; vowels—coefficient of variation of intensity, Emph, Sr, and minimum and maximum F0. Conclusion There are acoustic measures that may predict APA; however, each group of judges considers different measures to evaluate gender, revealing an important influence of context on the evaluator in gender assessment through the voice.
