Abstract:The multi-UAV network is promising to extend conventional networks by providing broader coverage and better reliability. Nevertheless, the broadcast nature of wireless signals and the broader coverage expose multi-UAV communications to the threats of passive eavesdroppers. Recent studies mainly focus on securing a single legitimate link, or communications between a UAV and multiple ground users in one/two-UAV-aided networks, while the physical layer secrecy analysis for hierarchical multi-UAV networks is underexplored. In this paper, we investigate a general two-tier UAV network consisting of multiple UAV transmitters (UTs) and multiple UAV receivers (URs) in the presence of multiple UAV eavesdroppers (UEs). To protect all legitimate UT-UR links against UEs at the physical layer, we design a two-stage framework consisting of a UT-UR association stage and a cooperative transmission stage. Specifically, we formulate the secure transmission problem into a many-to-one matching game followed by an overlapping coalition formation (OCF) game, taking into account the limited capabilities and the throughput requirements of URs, as well as the transmission power constraints of UTs. A matching algorithm and an OCF algorithm are proposed to solve these two sequential games whose convergences and stabilities are guaranteed theoretically. Simulation results show the superiority of our algorithms and the effectiveness of our two-stage game framework in the terms of secrecy performance.

Abstract:Billions of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and sensors are expected to be supported by fifth-generation (5G) wireless cellular networks. This highly connected structure is predicted to attract different and unseen types of attacks on devices, sensors, and networks that require advanced mitigation strategies and the active monitoring of the system components. Therefore, a paradigm shift is needed, from traditional prevention and detection approaches toward resilience. This study proposes a trust-based defense framework to ensure resilient IoT services on 5G multi-access edge computing (MEC) systems. This defense framework is based on the trustability metric, which is an extension of the concept of reliability and measures how much a system can be trusted to keep a given level of performance under a specific successful attack vector. Furthermore, trustability is used as a trade-off with system cost to measure the net utility of the system. Systems using multiple sensors with different levels of redundancy were tested, and the framework was shown to measure the trustability of the entire system. Furthermore, different types of attacks were simulated on an edge cloud with multiple nodes, and the trustability was compared to the capabilities of dynamic node addition for the redundancy and removal of untrusted nodes. Finally, the defense framework measured the net utility of the service, comparing the two types of edge clouds with and without the node deactivation capability. Overall, the proposed defense framework based on trustability ensures a satisfactory level of resilience for IoT on 5G MEC systems, which serves as a trade-off with an accepted cost of redundant resources under various attacks.

Abstract:Abstract The ultra‐dense deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as mobile small cell base stations (SBS) is expected to support ultra‐high‐speed, ultra‐reliable, and ultra‐low‐latency wireless connections in sixth generation (6G) wireless cellular networks. Inevitably, the explosively increasing number of SBSs each with ever‐shrinking cell size will result in the spectrum scarcity and pose critical challenges to the spectrum management. Towards the centralized spectrum management system, a third‐party authority is employed to coordinate the spectrum sensing, sharing, and allocation among participants. However, a centralized authority is vulnerable to numerous security threats, such as single point of failure, denial of service attacks, and privacy disclosure, and cannot guarantee fair and efficient spectrum management without mutual trusts among participants. To address these problems, a novel framework of blockchain‐aided spectrum management is designed to securely record the spectrum auction data and spectrum allocation data in the decentralized spectrum sharing. Moreover, a trust management scheme is proposed to evaluate the trusts of all UAVs participating in the decentralized spectrum sharing, where the trust increase depends on legal use of spectrum allocation and honest report of spectrum sensing. In particular, it is shown that the proposed trust management can not only incentivize the UAVs to comply with the legal rule of spectrum sharing in blockchain, but also punish the malicious behaviour that either violates the spectrum sharing rule or provides misleading spectrum sensing results.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology is becoming more prevalent and more diverse in its application. 5G and beyond networks must enable UAV connectivity. This will require the network operator to consider this new type of user in the planning and operation of the network. This work presents the challenges an operator will encounter and should consider in the future as UAVs become users of the network. We analyse the 3GPP specifications, the existing research literature, and a publicly available UAV connectivity dataset, to describe the challenges. We classify these challenges into network planning and network optimisation categories. We discuss the challenge of planning network coverage when considering coverage for flying users and the PCI collision and confusion issues that can be aggravated by these users. In discussing network optimisation challenges, we introduce Automatic Neighbouring Relation (ANR) and handover challenges, specifically the number of neighbours in the Neighbour Relation Table (NRT), and their potential deletion and block-listing, the frequent number of handovers and the possibility that the UAV disconnects because of handover issues. We discuss possible approaches to address the presented challenges and use a real-world dataset to support our findings about these challenges and their importance.
Secure, Robust, and Energy-Efficient Authenticated Data Sharing in UAV-Assisted 6G Networks

Abstract:This paper confronts the pressing challenges of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication networks by harnessing the unique capabilities of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). With the ambitious promises of 6G, including ultra-reliable 1 Tbps data delivery and ultra-low latency, the demand for innovative solutions becomes imperative. Traditional terrestrial base stations, though effective, exhibit limitations in scenarios requiring ubiquitous connectivity, prompting the integration of UAVs. In response to these challenges, we introduce a comprehensive solution. This involves UAVs collaboratively downloading desired content from service providers, and subsequently establishing secure connections with users for efficient content exchange. Accordingly, we introduce two new protocols: a collaborative group data downloading scheme among UAVs called SeGDS, and SeDDS for secure direct data sharing through out-of-band autonomous Device-to-Device (D2D) communication. Leveraging certificateless signcryption and certificateless multi-receiver encryption, these protocols offer lightweight, certificate-free solutions with features such as user revocation, non-repudiation, and mutual authentication. Prioritizing high availability, the proposed protocols effectively detect Denial of Service (DoS) and free riding attacks. A thorough evaluation underscores the superiority of the proposed protocols in both security and efficiency over existing models; SeDDS reduces overall computation by 3x, imposing a lighter communication load on UAVs, while SeGDS meets swarm UAV security requirements, reducing communication costs by 4x with low computation cost.

Abstract:Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based unmanned aerial vehicle and mobile edge computing (UAV-MEC) networks become a prospective scheme to effectively handle the burst of data for multiple users. However, due to the sensitivity of data privacy and the line-of-sight (LoS) characteristics of UAV, the secure communication of the NOMA-based UAV-MEC network is worth studying. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to enhance the secure computing capacity performance of the NOMA-based UAV-MEC network. With the requirements of the minimum secure computing tasks of terminal users (TUs), we maximize the secure computing capacity of the network via jointly optimizing UAV trajectory and resources allocation, which include channel relationship coefficient, CPU computing frequency and local computation through applying block coordinate descent (BCD) and successive convex approximation (SCA). Numerical results show that the secure computing performance of our proposed secure scheme is significantly better than the benchmarks.

Abstract:Wireless networks ensure the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) communicate and cooperate with each other, which plays an indispensable role among UAVs. The two crucial challenges in UAV wireless networks are energy saving and security. The current lightweight communication approaches lead to insufficient robustness of the encrypted transmission that is insecure. To address this issue, we propose a secure transmission approach with energy efficiency toward UAVs networks. We design a lightweight symmetric encryption algorithm based on SM4 and the relevant key negotiation and update mechanism to protect the confidentiality of communication contents. Moreover, a modified aggregative BLS signature scheme, together with the Merkle Hash tree (MHT), is introduced to guarantee the integrity and authenticity of data packets in transmission. Furthermore, we propose an online/offline revocable identity-based group signature (OORIBGS) scheme and integrate it into our framework for UAV anonymity, traceability, as well as revocability with small key management cost and high efficiency. We give detailed security analysis and prove that our proposal has the properties of data confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity, as well as identity traceability and anonymity. Moreover, we apply our approach in the UAVs networks and evaluate the runtime and anti-attack performance. The experimental results show that the proposed method can be effectively used in UAVs secure communication.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are emerging as enablers for supporting many applications and services, such as precision agriculture, search and rescue, temporary network deployment or coverage extension, and security. UAVs are being considered for integration into emerging 5G networks as aerial users or network support nodes. We propose to leverage UAVs in 5G to assist in the prevention, detection, and recovery of attacks on 5G networks. Specifically, we consider jamming, spoofing, eavesdropping, and the corresponding mitigation mechanisms that are enabled by the versatility of UAVs. We introduce the hot zone, safe zone, and UAV-based secondary authorization entity, among others, to increase the resilience and confidentiality of 5G radio access networks and services. We present simulation results and discuss open issues and research directions, including the need for experimental evaluation and a research platform for prototyping and testing the proposed technologies.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have found compelling applications in intelligent logistics, search and rescue as well as in air-borne Base Station (BS). However, their communications are prone to both channel errors and eavesdropping. Hence, we investigate the max-min secrecy fairness of UAV-aided cellular networks, in which Cooperative Rate-Splitting (CRS) aided downlink transmissions are employed by each multi-antenna UAV Base Station (UAV-BS) to safeguard the downlink of a two-user Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) system against an external multi-antenna Eavesdropper ($Eve$ ). Realistically, only Imperfect Channel State Information (ICSI) is assumed to be available at the transmitter. Additionally, we consider a realistic total power constraint and guarantee the specific Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the legitimate users. To handle the worst-case channel uncertainty of the legitimate users and an external $Eve$ , we conceive a robust secure resource allocation algorithm, which maximizes the minimum worst-case secrecy rate of the legitimate users. Based on the CRS principle, the transmitter splits and encodes the messages of legitimate users into common as well as private streams and the user having stronger CSI is asked to help the cell-edge user by opportunistically forwarding its decoded common message. In contrast to the existing schemes adopted in the literature for ensuring secure transmission of the first cooperative phase only, in our proposed solution the common message has a twin-fold mission. Explicitly, apart from serving as the desired message, it also acts as Artificial Noise (AN) for drowning out $Eve$ without consuming extra power. This is in stark contrast to the conventional AN designs. In the second phase, the pure AN is directed towards the $Eve$ , deploying a robust Maximum Ratio Transmitter (MRT) beamformer at the UAV-BS. To solve the resultant non-convex optimization problem we resort to the Sequential Parametric Convex Approximation (SPCA) method together with a bespoke initialization algorithm to avoid any failure due to infeasibility. Our simulation results confirm that the proposed secure transmission scheme outperforms the existing cooperative benchmarkers.

Abstract:Short-packet communication (SPC) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are anticipated to play crucial roles in the development of 5G-and-beyond wireless networks and the Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we propose a secure SPC system, where a UAV serves as a mobile decode-and-forward (DF) relay, periodically receiving and relaying small data packets from a remote IoT device to its receiver in two hops with strict latency requirements, in the presence of an eavesdropper. This system requires careful optimization of important design parameters, such as the coding blocklengths of both hops, transmit powers, and the UAV's trajectory. While the overall optimization problem is nonconvex, we tackle it by applying a block successive convex approximation (BSCA) approach to divide the original problem into three subproblems and solve them separately. Then, an overall iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain the final design with guaranteed convergence. Our proposed low-complexity algorithm incorporates robust trajectory design and resource management to optimize the effective average secrecy throughput of the communication system over the course of the UAV-relay's mission. Simulation results demonstrate significant performance improvements compared to various benchmark schemes and provide useful design insights on the coding blocklengths and transmit powers along the trajectory of the UAV.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel framework to deliver critical spread out URLLC services deploying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in an out-of-coverage area is developed. To this end, the resource optimization problem, i.e., resource blocks (RBs) and power allocation, and optimal UAV deployment strategy are studied for UAV-assisted 5G networks to jointly maximize the average sum-rate and minimize the transmit power of UAV while satisfying the URLLC requirements. To cope with the sporadic URLLC traffic problem, an efficient online URLLC traffic prediction model based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) is proposed which derives optimal URLLC scheduling and transmit power strategy. The formulated problem is revealed as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), which is solved following the introduced successive minimization algorithm. Finally, simulation results are provided to show our proposed solution approach's efficiency.

Abstract:Cooperation can help unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) improve their plans to visit charging stations and avoid congestion, but can be hindered by privacy concerns. We propose a new, privacy preserving, joint routing, and charging scheduling framework which allows multiple cellular-connected UAVs to jointly optimize their routes and charging schedules in a decentralized fashion. The framework allows each UAV to minimize its energy usage and connectivity outage, maximize its recharged energy, ensure its timely arrival, and preserve its privacy concerning its trajectory and destination. The key idea is that we obfuscate probabilistically the destination of each UAV, and design a new noncooperative Bayesian game among the UAVs to find their best routes and charging schedules toward the obfuscated destinations. Another important aspect is that we prove the game is a potential Bayesian game with a pure-strategy Bayesian Nash equilibrium and the best response yielded with the Bellman-Ford algorithm. This new framework preserves the UAVs' privacy in the sense that an UAV only shares the probability of its visit to a charging station at different times, and its best response is based on an obfuscated destination. Simulations demonstrate that the framework ensures timely arrivals with near-optimal routes and substantially lower complexity than a centralized routing scheme based on brute force.

Abstract:The deployment of beyond fifth-generation (5G) infrastructure over disaster-affected regions, temporary hotspot situations (e.g., massive gatherings, etc.), complex terrains (e.g., sea, hills, marshes, etc.) poses numerous challenges for cellular service providers. Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as potential candidates to overcome the aforementioned technical issues based on their multi-role capabilities to serve as aerial base stations, mobile relays, and flying wireless access points. As such, the UAVs can act as portable platforms that can be deployed immediately on demand without requiring massive ground infrastructure to support wireless services. This article introduces the integration of UAVs to cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) for beyond 5G applications. The article mainly focuses on the underlying opportunities and challenges to realize the UAV-assisted C-RAN (UC-RAN) architecture in view of three generic application scenarios, i.e., disaster management, hotspots, and complex terrains. A preliminary performance analysis via simulation is further provided for the proposed UC-RAN under hotspot application scenario based on the relevant metrics.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon be omnipresent and billions of sensors and actuators will support our industries and well-being. IoT devices are embedded systems that are connected using wireless technology for most of the cases. The availability of the wireless network serving the IoT, the privacy, integrity, and trustworthiness of the data are of critical importance, since IoT will drive businesses and personal decisions. This paper proposes a new approach in the wireless security domain that leverages advanced wireless technology and the emergence of the unmanned aerial system or vehicle (UAS or UAV). We consider the problem of eavesdropping and analyze how UAVs can aid in reducing, or overcoming this threat in the mobile IoT context. The results show that huge improvements in terms of channel secrecy rate can be achieved when UAVs assist base stations for relaying the information to the desired IoT nodes. Our approach is technology agnostic and can be expanded to address other communications security aspects.

Abstract:Trust, security, and privacy are three of the major pillars to assemble the fifth generation network and beyond. Despite such pillars are principally interconnected, they arise a multitude of challenges to be addressed separately. 5G ought to offer flexible and pervasive computing capabilities across multiple domains according to user demands and assuring trustworthy network providers. Distributed marketplaces expect to boost the trading of heterogeneous resources so as to enable the establishment of pervasive service chains between cross-domains. Nevertheless, the need for reliable parties as ``marketplace operators'' plays a pivotal role to achieving a trustworthy ecosystem. One of the principal blockages in managing foreseeable networks is the need of adapting previous trust models to accomplish the new network and business requirements. In this regard, this article is centered on trust management of 5G multi-party networks. The design of a reputation-based trust framework is proposed as a Trust-as-a-Service (TaaS) solution for any distributed multi-stakeholder environment where zero trust and zero-touch principles should be met. Besides, a literature review is also conducted to recognize the network and business requirements currently envisaged. Finally, the validation of the proposed trust framework is performed in a real research environment, the 5GBarcelona testbed, leveraging 12% of a 2.1GHz CPU with 20 cores and 2% of the 30GiB memory. In this regard, these outcomes reveal the feasibility of the TaaS solution in the context of determining reliable network operators.

Abstract:An Internet of Things (IoT) system for managing and coordinating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has revolutionized the industrial sector. The largest issue with the design of the Internet of UAVs (IoUAV) is security. Conspicuously, the novel contribution of the proposed work is to develop a layered authentication approach to facilitate safe IoUAV communication. Specifically, four modules, including the pre-deployment module, user registration module, login module, and authentication module, form the basis of security analysis. In the proposed technique, UAVs are added to the IoUAV registry. The next step is the user registration module, where people are registered with the UAV so they may access the information in real time. In the login module, the user connects with the server for data transmission. Finally, in the authentication module, all entities, including users, servers, and UAVs, are authenticated to ensure secure data communication. The proposed method achieves peak performance as compared to the state-of-the-art techniques in terms of statistical parameters of latency (3.255s), throughput (90.15%), and packet loss (8.854%).

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly pivotal in operations such as flood rescue, wildfire surveillance, and covert military endeavors, with their integration into the Internet of Things (IoT) networks broadening the scope of services they provide. Amidst this expansion, security concerns for UAVs have come to the forefront, particularly in open communication environments where they face authentication challenges and risks of sensitive data, including location information, being exposed to unauthorized parties. To address these issues, we propose a secure and lightweight authentication scheme that combines the use of anonymity mechanisms and Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs). Specifically, we employ pseudo- and temporary identities to maintain the anonymity of UAVs, while also utilizing PUF technology to strengthen the security of Ground Station Servers (GSSs) against physical threats. Rigorous validation through ProVerif and the Random Oracle (ROR) Model indicates our scheme's superior performance over existing protocols in terms of both efficiency and security.

Abstract:Integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into cellular networks offers a way to boost connectivity and service quality in both cities and remote areas. In this paper, we present a new framework that combines advanced deep learning techniques with backhaul traffic optimisation to manage resources efficiently in UAV-supported communication networks. Using intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) and cell-free communication strategies, our approach improves backhaul traffic, ensuring smooth data transmission and better network performance. To deal with diverse resource challenges, we introduce an adaptive offloading framework that enhances mobile edge networks through dynamic, traffic-aware resource allocation and serverless load balancing. Our method uses multi-agent deep learning for prediction of network demands, allowing for dynamic power control. Our simulations show that the proposed framework performs well in different scenarios, leading to higher efficiency and total network throughput. This framework offers a promising approach for managing resources in future UAV-supported mobile edge networks.

Abstract:Due to its high mobility and flexible deployment, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is drawing unprecedented interest in both military and civil applications to enable agile wireless communications and provide ubiquitous connectivity. Mainly operating in an open environment, UAV communications can benefit from dominant line-of-sight links; however, it on the other hand renders the UAVs more vulnerable to malicious eavesdropping or jamming attacks. Recently, physical layer security (PLS), which exploits the inherent randomness of the wireless channels for secure communications, has been introduced to UAV systems as an important complement to the conventional cryptography-based approaches. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on the current achievements of the UAV-aided wireless communications is conducted from the PLS perspective. We first introduce the basic concepts of UAV communications including the typical static/mobile deployment scenarios, the unique characteristics of air-to-ground channels, as well as various roles that a UAV may act when PLS is concerned. Then, we introduce the widely used secrecy performance metrics and start by reviewing the secrecy performance analysis and enhancing techniques for statically deployed UAV systems, and extend the discussion to a more general scenario where the UAVs' mobility is further exploited. For both cases, respectively, we summarize the commonly adopted methodologies in the corresponding analysis and design, then describe important works in the literature in detail. Finally, potential research directions and challenges are discussed to provide an outlook for future works in the area of UAV-PLS in 5G and beyond networks.

Abstract:Due to the advancements in cellular technologies and the dense deployment of cellular infrastructure, integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond cellular networks is a promising solution to achieve safe UAV operation as well as enabling diversified applications with mission-specific payload data delivery. In particular, 5G networks need to support three typical usage scenarios, namely, enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). On the one hand, UAVs can be leveraged as cost-effective aerial platforms to provide ground users with enhanced communication services by exploiting their high cruising altitude and controllable maneuverability in three-dimensional (3D) space. On the other hand, providing such communication services simultaneously for both UAV and ground users poses new challenges due to the need for ubiquitous 3D signal coverage as well as the strong air-ground network interference. Besides the requirement of high-performance wireless communications, the ability to support effective and efficient sensing as well as network intelligence is also essential for 5G-and-beyond 3D heterogeneous wireless networks with coexisting aerial and ground users. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest research efforts on integrating UAVs into cellular networks, with an emphasis on how to exploit advanced techniques (e.g., intelligent reflecting surface, short packet transmission, energy harvesting, joint communication and radar sensing, and edge intelligence) to meet the diversified service requirements of next-generation wireless systems. Moreover, we highlight important directions for further investigation in future work.
