Abstract:Airborne SAR operating in the VHF/UHF band has shown promising results for wide-area surveillance of ground moving targets. Both targets in the open as well as concealed by foliage may be detected in a robust manner by changing detection with single channel. This manner has lower cost but only limited indication. To improve its performance, we discuss the characteristics of moving target in the azimuth sub-look image. These characteristics include phase and amplitude of moving target, which corresponds to the azimuth shift motion and energy variation in respectively. The simulation and real results show that the change detection of GMTI can be improved by utilizing these characteristics.
A multi-channel based passive detection strategy for high-speed moving target in the airspace under varying interference.

Abstract:Passive radar has shown lots of advantages as compared to active radar and has become a significant branch of bistatic radar. Detection difficulty of non-cooperative reflected signals at very low SNR is a well-known challenge in passive radar, and previous works have mainly studied multi-user co-operative detection based solutions. In this work, we study a passive radar system using the television satellite as illuminator of opportunity(IO), and focus on finding solution for detection challenges caused by time-varying interference and high-speed moving target through improving performance of each single detector. A multi-channel based passive detection strategy is proposed. The proposed method is characterized by sufficient information based fusion and weighted combining. Theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation are conducted to evaluate the performance of our strategy.

Abstract:This paper presents a new two-stage approach for suppressing strong clutter and detecting moving targets using scatterers' spatial structure and signal similarity. Compared with the traditional strong clutter suppression methods, the proposed method considers both the spatial similarity and the channel correlation of the scatterers, effectively alleviating the false alarm probability and avoiding the missed detection problem caused via identifying strong moving targets as strong stationary clutter. Additionally, a detector is presented based on the linear degree of the radial velocity interferometric phase (LDRVP) to eliminate false alarms from isolated strong scatter points and the edges of strong scatterers. The experimental results of the X-band radar indicate the presented approach's lower false alarm probability and superior robustness.

Abstract:The new mode of Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (CSAR) has several advantages including multi-aspect and long-time observation, which can generate high-frame-rate image sequences to detect moving targets with a single-channel system. Nonetheless, due to CSAR being sensitive to 3D structures, static high targets are observed in scene display rotational motion within CSAR subaperture image sequences. Such motion can cause false alarms rising when utilizing image sequence-based moving target detection methods like logarithm background subtraction (LBS). To address this issue, this paper first thoroughly analyzes the moving target and static high target's difference for the trajectory in an image sequence. Two new trajectory features of the rotation angle and moving distance are proposed to differentiate them. Based on the features, a new false alarm suppression method is proposed. The method first utilizes LBS to obtain coarse binary detection results comprising both moving and static high targets, then employs morphological filtering to eliminate noise. Next, DBSCAN and target tracking steps are employed to extract the trajectory features of the target and false alarm. Finally, false alarms are suppressed with trajectory-based feature discriminators to output detection results. The W-band CSAR open dataset is used to validate the proposed method's effectiveness.

A Novel CFAR Algorithm for Multi-target Detection with FMCW Radar

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection plays a vital role in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems. Most existing CFAR algorithms need to estimate background level before determining the detection threshold. In a multi-target scene, existence of interference targets could cause inaccurate estimation of background level, which will then lead to severely degraded performance of the CFAR algorithm. This is also called multi-target shadowing effect. To overcome the challenge, a compressed sensing CFAR (CS-CFAR) is proposed in this work, which detects the target of interest (TOI) relying on the correlation between the linear measurements of signal and the sensing matrix, instead of relying on an estimated background level as in conventional CFAR algorithms, and achieves a required false alarm rate by estimating the distributed parameters of reduced sample model. Through doing so the proposed CS-CFAR algorithm effectively mitigates impact of interference targets on the detection performance. Superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional ones in multi-target scenarios is verified by both simulation and test results.

Abstract:Target detection is an important part of an automatic target recognition (ATR) system. There would be many false alarms if using constant false alarm rate (CFAR) algorithm directly on complex synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images with tremendous speckle. Usually, the speckle should be reduced previously before CFAR. In this paper, a wavelet transform de-noise and an improved CFAR algorithm have been combined to detect military targets from SAR image. Different threshold methods were used in the wavelet domain when dealing with the detail information and non-detail information in the image to receive the edge information and reduce the speckle. Then a three-stage CFAR algorithm was used to detect the de-noised image. This algorithm contains global CFAR, local CFAR and count filters. Good results are obtained when the method is used to process high-resolution, HH polarization SAR images. Such algorithms could be arranged in the SAR image based automatic target recognition system.

Abstract:Due to a long coherent processing interval, moving targets are severely smeared in the UHF-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. This further results in a low signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio, which might lead to an unacceptable false-alarm rate in multichannel ground moving target indication. A method of moving target screening is presented in this letter, which serves to determine whether the target detected by a constant false-alarm rate detector is a real moving target. An inverse omega-K algorithm is implemented, which can recover the Doppler phase history of any isolated target within a clutter-suppressed omega-K SAR image. The recovered data are again processed into a subimage by a simple range-Doppler algorithm. Then, the subimage is refocused by azimuth autofocus processing. The sharpness of the subimage will not change after refocusing if it only contains stationary targets; otherwise, the sharpness will significantly improve. We can eliminate a false moving target by detecting this change. The proposed method is demonstrated on simulated and real multichannel UHF-band SAR data.

Abstract:Ground moving target detection is one of the foremost tasks for multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. The traditional robust principal component analysis (RPCA) method is capable of separating low-rank and sparse components from mixed echo signals, and it has been widely applied in SAR ground moving target indication (GMTI). However, it suffers from sensitivity to channel mismatch, high computational complexity, and excessively high false alarm rates. To address these issues, a novel method that combines adaptive multichannel data reconstruction (DR) with improved pseudo-skeleton decomposition (IPSD) is proposed. First, the iterative weighted approach is presented to precisely reconstruct the multichannel data vector with the joint-pixel model. After that, IPSD is presented to achieve the moving target detection, in which the row and column index sets are selected using the generalized inner product (GIP) and the amplitude histogram distribution criterion. Compared to the existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm effectively addresses the challenge of improving local region coherence in multichannel image sequences. In addition, compared to previous RPCA methods, the proposed algorithm significantly reduces false alarm rates in strong clutter backgrounds while achieving higher efficiency. Simulation results and real SAR data experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Detection and imaging of multiple moving targets is a challenging task, particularly with real synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. In this paper, moving targets with different motion parameters are classified based on the relative locations of their spectra to that of the clutter. Based on the classification, a novel moving target processing strategy with real SAR data is proposed, including a two-step ground moving target indication (GMTI) algorithm and a practical ground moving target imaging (GMTIm) algorithm with motion error compensation. The two-step GMTI algorithm has the ability of indicating multiple moving targets, particularly those submerged by the clutter; the practical GMTIm algorithm shows a robust performance in real data moving target imaging since the motion errors are estimated and compensated. Both simulated and real data processing results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Abstract:For azimuth multichannel (AMC) high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, nonuniformly sampled signals will lead to false targets appearing in the image, which has a great impact on image quality and target detection. Many spectrum reconstruction methods for stationary scenes have been proposed to obtain images without false targets, but it is ineffective for moving targets due to the phase error caused by radial velocity. To present the radial velocity effect on the reconstructed image clearly, we establish a precise relation between the characteristics (imaging position, residual RCM, and amplitude) of false targets and radial velocity from the Doppler domain perspective. According to the effect analysis, we propose an image-domain false target suppression and radial velocity estimation method for moving targets. First, obtain multiple images through imaging preprocessing. Second, estimate and compensate the phase error of false targets based on the least -norm optimization model to suppress false targets. Third, estimate the radial velocity of real moving targets based on the cross correlation method. Compared to the existing methods, the proposed method is processed in the image domain which has a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the advantages of not requiring recognition and extraction of targets, lower computational complexity, and applicability for slow targets, fast targets, and multiple targets of the same range cell. The simulated SAR data and GaoFen-3 SAR data are processed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, the radial velocity estimation method is verified by automatic identification system (AIS) information.

Abstract:The single channel Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar (CSAR) has the advantage of continuous surveillance of a fixed scene of interest, which can provide high frame rate image sequences to detect ground moving targets. Recent image-sequence-based CSAR moving target detection methods utilize the fact that the target signal moves fast in the image sequence. Knowledge of the target's image trace(moving trace in the image sequence, which is equal to a target signature's morphology in a full aperture CSAR image) can help design better detection methods. However, previous signature morphology studies are based on linear track geometry assumptions, which cannot handle CSAR's nonlinear track. Hence, this paper proposes a new image trace method based on the range-Doppler principle. The proposed method can deduct the exact analytic function of an arbitrary moving target's image trace in CSAR. The method assumes radar operates in side-looking mode and that the target moves on the ground plane. It combines the range-Doppler equations(i.e., iso-range and iso-Doppler relation) and Cartesian transformation between the ground and radar coordinate system to obtain the parametric functions of the image trace. Based on the method, three types of target motion (including linear and nonlinear motion) are analyzed. The proposed method is validated with both simulated and real data.

Abstract:An efficient approach to achieve ground moving target indication (GMTI) for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is to use the Monopulse-SAR system. This paper examines the statistics of complex monopulse ratio (CMR) for SAR/GMTI model when complex Gaussian clutter-plus-noise is considered. The two dimensional probability density function (pdf) of CMR is analyzed in detail. An automatic constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) detector with the probability of false alarm given in a closed-form for moving targets is provided and extended to a multi-CMRD form to further improve the final detection performance. Experimental results are presented to examine the detection performance and validate the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Deep learning (DL) has succeeded in the field of target detection and has been introduced into the research works of ground-moving target indication (GMTI) for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) recently. Due to the lack of labeled data in SAR/GMTI, simulated data are usually employed to support the training of networks, which has proved to be a feasible way in practice. Although some simulated data are very close to the real radar data, the fact is that distribution differences between them are inevitable and always lead to a performance loss of the network. Motivated by recent advances in transfer learning, this letter proposes a new method for ground-moving target detection of multichannel SAR systems, namely, subdomain adaptive residual network (SARN). It is built on the basis of ResNet18, and subdomain adaptation is introduced. During the network training, multikernel local maximum mean discrepancy (MK-LMMD) is minimized as well as classification error. Experiments on three-channel SAR data show that the proposed method significantly improves the detection performance as compared with CA-CFAR and the DL method.

Abstract:For along-track multichannel synthetic aperture radar, this paper proposes a novel ground moving target signal model in the high-resolution complex image domain. Based on the range-Doppler imaging of static scene, the 2-D complex response of an isolated rectilinearly moving target is derived via the stationary phase principle (SPP) approximations. It is shown that moving targets in complex domain can be divided into three types according to the 2-D motion distribution and the SPP approximation conditions. Different from the known peaklike response of a static target, different amplitude and phase modulations will appear for different types of moving targets. Moreover, a single target can be split into two targets in the image when its Doppler spectrum spreads over two ambiguous Doppler zones. All types of targets will have the same Doppler interferometric effect along multichannel images, which is decided by the target's ambiguous Doppler frequency. Furthermore, with the proposed signal model, the complex image properties can be completely described and analyzed. Finally, some numerical experiments are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed signal model and analysis.

Abstract:Moving target brings out the different position shifts and defocusing across the image sequences acquired by circular synthetic aperture radar (CSAR) due to the Doppler shift and range smear effects. In this paper, a novel moving target detection approach for single-channel CSAR is proposed based on deep neural network (DNN). A dual-channel densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) in consideration of complex-valued information is exploited for distinguishing the ground clutter and moving target. In terms of limited CSAR measure data set available for training the DNN network, simulated moving target samples are generated and fused into the measured ones under the various motion parameters. Finally, experiments have demonstrated that the proposed DenseNet for single-channel CSAR system processes an accepted detection performance and effectively overcomes the insufficiency of the limited dataset applications.

Abstract:The conventional target detection methods in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images usually utilize the clutter information via the clutter statistical modeling. However, it is difficult to select an appropriate clutter statistical distribution model for a real SAR image. To make full use of the clutter information while avoid the clutter statistical modeling, in this paper, we propose a novel target detection method based on the dual-domain sparse reconstruction saliency in SAR images. Considering the speckle noise in SAR images, we utilize not only the intensity information in image domain but also the structure information in feature domain. First, the image-domain saliency map is constructed via the sparse reconstruction on clutter templates extracted from pure clutter SAR images in the image domain with the pixel-level intensity information as the descriptor, and the potential target templates are obtained from this saliency map. Then, the feature-domain saliency map is constructed via the sparse reconstruction on both clutter and potential target templates in the feature domain with the superpixel-level locality-constrained linear coding (LLC) of pixel-level scale invariant feature transform features as the descriptor, where the LLC can describe the spatial and structural information in superpixel level. Finally, the aforementioned two saliency maps are integrated to make our method more robust to speckle noise, and then, the winner-take-all approach is applied to detect targets from the integrated saliency map. We evaluate the proposed method on the miniSAR data and the RADARSAT-2 data. On the miniSAR data, the proposed method is at least 5% higher in terms of AUC than the other saliency methods (i.e., the Itti's method, the SR method, the SVD method, and the JDSR method), and at least 20% higher in F1-score, 22% higher in figure of merit than the Gaussian constant false alarm rate (CFAR), the Gamma-CFAR, and the aforementioned saliency methods. On the RADARSAT-2 data, the proposed method also achieves better performance than the previously compared methods.

Abstract:To detect and estimate ground slowly moving targets in airborne single-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a road-aided ground moving target indication (GMTI) algorithm is proposed in this paper. First, the road area is extracted from a focused SAR image based on radar vision. Second, after stationary clutter suppression in the range-Doppler domain, a moving target is detected and located in the image domain via the watershed method. The target's position on the road as well as its radial velocity can be determined according to the target's offset distance and traffic rules. Furthermore, the target's azimuth velocity is estimated based on the road slope obtained via polynomial fitting. Compared with the traditional algorithms, the proposed method can effectively cope with slowly moving targets partly submerged in a stationary clutter spectrum. In addition, the proposed method can be easily extended to a multi-channel system to further improve the performance of clutter suppression and motion estimation. Finally, the results of numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Multichannel synthetic aperture radar ground moving target indication has been widely used and get great attention nowadays. Traditional adaptive methods like space-time adaptive processing (STAP) need to calculate and search the maximum of the test statistic pixel by pixel over a large range of radial velocity, which will cause great computational burden. Nonadaptive methods like displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) will cause signal loss of moving targets, thereby degrading the performance of moving targets detection and radial velocity estimation. To improve the problem mentioned above, this article proposes a novel two-step scheme based on greatest of (GO)-DPCA and Local STAP. In step I, GO-DPCA utilizes the complex images of the channels with different baselines for joint moving target detection. Then, in step II, only the local data of moving targets detected in step I needs to be extracted from the original image domain for clutter suppression and radial velocity estimation simultaneously by STAP. Since the processing gain of moving targets depends on the radial velocity and baseline length, the detection performance of moving targets with different radial velocity can be improved by proposed GO-DPCA compared to conventional DPCA. Considering the moving targets usually distribute sparsely in the scene, step II can avoid most computational burden caused by processing pixel by pixel. Finally, the experimental results of both simulated and acquired data are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:As an active microwave imaging sensor, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has become one of the main means of Earth observation owing to its unique technical advantages of all-day, all-weather operation and long working distance. As such, it plays a very important role in military and civilian fields. With the development of SAR remote-sensing technology, high-resolution, high-quality SAR images are produced continuously. However, manual detection and recognition of targets of interest is time-consuming and laborious, so the development of Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) technology is a matter of urgency. The typical SAR ATR system primarily comprises three stages: detection, discrimination, and classification/recognition. The detection and discrimination stages are the basis of the SAR ATR system, and research on SAR applications in the radar field has been conducted by researchers around the world. For single-channel SAR images, target detection and discrimination from simple scenes yield good results. However, in complex scenes, the clutter scattering intensity is relatively high, the clutter background is heterogenous, the target scattering intensity is relatively weak, and the target distribution is dense. These factors continue to make accurate SAR target detection and discrimination difficult. In this paper, we summarize the recent research progress on single-channel SAR target detection and discrimination methods for complex scenes, analyze the characteristics and problems associated with various methods, and consider the future development trend of single-channel SAR target detection and discrimination methods for complex scenes.
