Abstract:Responsive photonic crystal hydrogel sensors are renowned for their colorimetric sensing ability and can be utilized in many fields such as medical diagnosis, environmental detection, food safety, and industrial production. Previously, our group invented responsive photonic nanochains (RPNCs), which improve the response speed of photonic crystal hydrogel sensors by at least 2 to 3 orders of magnitude. However, RPNCs are dispersed in a liquid medium, which needs a magnetic field to orient them for the generation of structural colors. In addition, during repeated use, the process of cleaning and redispersing can cause entanglement, breakage, and a loss of RPNCs, resulting in poor stability. Moreover, when mixing with the samples in liquid, the RPNCs may lead to the contamination of the samples being tested. In this paper, we incorporate one-dimensional oriented RPNCs with agarose gel film to prepare heterogeneous hydrogel films. Thanks to the non-responsive and porous nature of the agarose gel, the protons diffuse freely in the gel, which facilitates the fast response of the RPNCs. Furthermore, the "frozen" RPNCs in agarose gel not only enable the display of structural colors without the need for a magnet but also improve the cycling stability and long-term durability of the sensor, and will not contaminate the samples. This work paves the way for the application of photonic crystal sensors.

Abstract:A facile and green approach has been demonstrated for the fabrication of highly uniform and monodisperse noble metal (Ag, Au, Pt) nanoparticles (NMNPs) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers by combining an in situ reduction and electrospinning technique, which are used as efficient biosensor for the detection of H2O2. The small and stable NMNPs can be easily obtained in aqueous solution using EGCG as both reductant and stabilizer. Through electrospinning technique, uniform and smooth nanofibers can be obtained and the NMNPs with narrow size distributions are well dispersed in PVA nanofibers. The investigation indicates that the viscosity of the PVA solution play an important role in controlling the size of NMNPs. The fabricated AgNPs/PVA nanofibers functionalized electrodes exhibits remarkable increased electrochemical catalysis toward H2O2 and excellent stability and reusability. The biosensor allows the highly sensitive detection of H2O2 with a broad linear range span of the concentration of H2O2 from 10μM to 560μM. The rapid electrode response to the change of the H2O2 concentration is attributed to the fast diffusion of the H2O2 onto the surface of small AgNPs through the porous nanofibers structures.
A portable hydrogel kit based on Au@GM88A/I combined with mobile phone for polychromatic semi-quantitative and quantitative sensing analysis

Abstract:The development of an affordable, portable, and instrument-free colorimetric biosensor holds significant importance for routine monitoring and clinical diagnosis. To overcome the limitations that traditional monochromatic colorimetric kits struggle to distinguish subtle color changes with the naked eye, we designed and constructed a portable hydrogel kit for polychromatic semi-quantitative and quantitative sensing analysis. When the actual samples and I- were introduced into a gelatin hydrogel encapsulated with MIL-88A(Fe), Au NRs and oxidase (Au@GM88A/I), a noticeable color change occurred. Additionally, a mathematic model between Hue and multicolor signal was set up for the first time by mobile phone photo technology, successfully applied to the glucose detection in serum. The visual detection had a wide concentration range of 0.02-0.80 mM with a limit of detection down to 0.02 mM. Above all, hydrogel kit prepared with gelatin as a carrier addressed the issues of uneven color and slow response rate commonly seen in gels like sodium alginate and agarose. This improvement would be beneficial for enhancing the accuracy of color captured by mobile phone assisted hydrogel kits, making it a valuable tool for biomarker analysis.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality show great potential in wearable smart devices. In this work, inspired by the nano-structured architecture strategy and natural mussel adhesive mechanism, a conductive hydrogel (AgPMP hydrogel) was fabricated through facile direct in-situ polymerization. Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and polydopamine (PDA) chains were integrated into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) gel matrix, with activated PNIPAM microgels (MGs) serving as nano-crosslinkers. The overall internal structure of the hydrogel presented a heterogeneous cross-linked mesh-like structure with numerous irregular wrinkles. The AgPMP hydrogel demonstrated significantly enhanced mechanical strength, achieving a remarkable stretchability of 1140% attributed to the nano-microstructured architecture built by AM-based network, nano-crosslinkers and Ag NWs. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of PDA and Ag NWs, the hydrogel exhibited impressive photothermal antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, in the presence of abundant active catechol groups, this hydrogel possessed adequate tissue-adhesive and self-healing abilities as well as good antioxidant property. Notably, the AgPMP hydrogel exhibited outstanding strain-sensitive conductivity. The resultant strain sensor owned high sensitivity with a guage factor (GF) up to 8.35 at strain of 250%. The stable response signals during continuous and gradual cycling proved its electrical durability and stability. Combined with the great merits of above performance, this sensor holds great promise for detecting huaman movements. The relative resistance change ranged from 16% to 64% as the finger bending angle changed from 30° to 90°. Thanks to its simple fabrication process, this multifunctional conductive hydrogel is expected to have widespread potential applications in tissue engineering, soft electronic skin and human-health monitoring.

Abstract:We report a class of polysaccharide-based hybrid nanogels that can integrate the functional building blocks for optical pH-sensing, cancer cell imaging, and controlled drug release into a single nanoparticle system, which can offer broad opportunities for combined diagnosis and therapy. The hybrid nanogels were prepared by in-situ immobilization of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) in the interior of the pH and temperature dual responsive hydroxypropylcellulose-poly(acrylic acid) (HPC-PAA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks. The-OH groups of the HPC chains are designed to sequester the precursor Cd(2+) ions into the nanogels as well as stabilize the in-situ formed CdSe QDs. The pH-sensitive PAA network chains are designed to induce a pH-responsive volume phase transition of the hybrid nanogels. The developed HPC-PAA-CdSe hybrid nanogels combine a strong trap emission at 741nm for sensing physicochemical environment in a pH dependent manner and a visible excitonic emission at 592nm for mouse melanoma B16F10 cell imaging. The hybrid nanogels also provide excellent stability as a drug carrier, which cannot only provide a high drug loading capacity for a model anticancer drug temozolomide, but also offer a pH-triggered sustained-release of the drug molecules in the gel network.

Abstract:A confirmatory factor analysis of items representing two dimensions of the locus of control construct was conducted with LISREL. In general, the analysis substantiated the hypothesized model by providing statistical tests of the loadings and the fit of the model to the data. Given the presence of several correlated error terms, a three-factor model was tested. While both the two-factor and three-factor models appeared to fit the data, the former provided a better fit. In addition, LISREL provided evidence of interfactor correlation; those with a stronger external expectation of control tend to be characterized by stronger powerful-others or fate orientations.

Abstract:This talk is based on my work in collaboration with B. Boisseau, D. Polarski, and A.A. Starobinsky. The most natural and best-motivated alternatives to general relativity are the so-called "scalar-tensor" theories, in which the gravitational interaction is mediated not only by a (spin-2) graviton, but also by a (spin-0) scalar field. We study quintessence in this general framework, and show that the microscopic Lagrangian of the theory can be unambiguously reconstructed from two observable cosmological functions of the redshift: the luminosity distance and the linear density perturbation of dustlike matter. We also analyze the constraints imposed on the theory by the knowledge of only the first of these functions, as it will probably be available sooner with a good accuracy. [The main interest of this very short paper is to give the equations in the "Brans-Dicke" parametrization.]

Abstract:The lack of solid-phase media limits the portability of colorimetric sensing platforms. In this study, a series of transparent polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels encapsulated antimony tin oxide nanoparticles (ATO NPs) and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) were developed as the solid-phase sensing media for glucose and uric acid. Under the conditions of H 2 O 2 and UV light, the hydrogel presented a multicatalytic ability (photo Fenton-like and peroxidase-like activities), which accelerated the oxidation of TMB, turning the hydrogel from colorless to blue and finally enhancing the detection signal. The plasticity of the hydrogel allowed it to be designed into various shapes (membrane, microsphere etc. ) to adapt multiple detection platforms (a liquid/solid-phase UV spectrophotometer, a NanoPhotometer, and smartphone spectroscopy). The hydrogel sensing media exhibited excellent tunability and enhanced the photocatalytic ability. The proposed material was successfully applied to detect glucose and uric acids in real samples by four detection platforms to evaluate its practicability.

Abstract:Nowadays, hydrogels have been attracted a lot of interest due to their immense potential in different fields such as biomedicine and biotechnology. Biodegradable and biocompatible pH-sensitive chitosan-grafted polyacrylic acid (CTS-g-PAA) hydrogel was synthesized by grafting an acrylic acid monomer onto chitosan at the presence of methylene bisacrylamide as a cross-linking agent and ammonium persulphate as an initiator. FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the properties of the obtained hydrogel. The synthesized hydrogel is suitable for the delivery of many hydrophilic drugs or species. Using a multi-walled carbon nanotube modified-glassy carbon electrode (CNT-GCE), the loading and release conditions of Nile Blue (NB) as an electroactive compound were evaluated utilizing the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The effect of various parameters on the electrochemical signal of NB was investigated, and the optimal conditions for the efficient performance of hydrogel to delivery of NB were obtained. The electrocatalytic current values show linear dependence to NB concentration in the range of 0.098 – 0.971 μM while the detection limit of this electrochemical platform was 12.3 nM. The unique proposed hydrogel with the electroactive NB has a broad range of possible applications in biosensors for signal enhancement and bioanalysis.

Ultrathin Photonic Polymer Gel Films Templated by Non-Close-Packed Monolayer Colloidal Crystals to Enhance Colorimetric Sensing

Abstract:Responsive polymer-based sensors have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to detect the presence of analytes and convert the detected signal into a physical and/or chemical change. High responsiveness, fast response speed, good linearity, strong stability, and small hysteresis are ideal, but to gain these properties at the same time remains challenging. This paper presents a facile and efficient method to improve the photonic sensing properties of polymeric gels by using non-close-packed monolayer colloidal crystals (ncp MCCs) as the template. Poly-(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP), a weak electrolyte, was selected to form the pH-responsive gel material, which was deposited onto ncp MCCs obtained by controlled O₂ plasma etching of close-packed (cp) MCCs. The resultant ultrathin photonic polymer gel film (UPPGF) exhibited significant improvement in responsiveness and linearity towards pH sensing compared to those prepared using cp MCCs template, achieving fast visualized monitoring of pH changes with excellent cyclic stability and small hysteresis loop. The responsiveness and linearity were found to depend on the volume and filling fraction of the polymer gel. Based on a simple geometric model, we established that the volume increased first and then decreased with the decrease of template size, but the filling fraction increased all the time, which was verified by microscopy observations. Therefore, the responsiveness and linearity of UPPGF to pH can be improved by simply adjusting the etching time of oxygen plasma. The well-designed UPPGF is reliable for visualized monitoring of analytes and their concentrations, and can easily be combined in sensor arrays for more accurate detection.

Abstract:The colorimetric sensor has made great achievements in glucose sensing and diabetes prediction due to its simplicity, visualization, and lack of need for sophisticated instruments. The noninvasive sampling method has received more attention. Herein, a colorimetric agarose gel sensor was constructed by combining Cu-doped carbon nanowires (CuCNWs) with excellent peroxidase-like activity and glucose oxidase (GOx). CuCNWs can effectively catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with a maximum catalytic rate of 12.5 × 10–8 M s–1, which is superior to most nanomaterials reported. The modification by PVP can significantly improve the stability of CuCNWs under physiological conditions without affecting their catalytic activity. By introducing GOx, the sensitive detections of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose in a wide range with the limit of detection as low as 30 nM and 0.2 μM can be achieved. Notably, the colorimetric agarose gel sensor exhibits a higher sensitivity than commercial test strips in detecting glucose in solution. Furthermore, it was applied to the detection of urine glucose. Diabetic urine can be easily distinguished from normal urine by judging color changes with the naked eye. This work is of great significance in guiding the construction of colorimetric agarose gel sensors and expands the applications of nanozymes in the biosensing fields.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are used in various fields, including fuel cells, energy conversion devices, and sensors, because of their large surface area and excellent catalytic properties. Although various methods of synthesizing nanoparticles are available, the most popular is the solution-phase reduction of metal ions. Electrodeposition is a method of reducing metal ions in solution and is widely used because of its various advantages. In this study, Ag nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution were evenly dispersed on the surface of an electrode by applying electrodeposition in an agarose hydrogel medium instead of in solution, confirming the feasibility of Ag deposition in agarose hydrogel, even at a lower reduction potential than that in solution. These results are attributed to the electrolyte effect owing to the hydrophilic backbone of the agarose hydrogel and the gel effect, which reduces unexpected convection. H2O2 was detected by using the Ag nanoparticles synthesized in agarose hydrogel, and the limit of detection for H2O2 was found to be 4.82 μM, with a dynamic range of 1–500 μM. The nanoparticle synthesis platform proposed in this study is expected to be actively used for the synthesis of other metal/nonmetal nanoparticles.

Abstract:Fluorescent hydrogels are promising candidate materials for portable biosensors to be used in point-of-care diagnosis because (1) they have a greater capacity for binding organic molecules than immunochromatographic test systems, determined by the immobilization of affinity labels within the three-dimensional hydrogel structure; (2) fluorescent detection is more sensitive than the colorimetric detection of gold nanoparticles or stained latex microparticles; (3) the properties of the gel matrix can be finely tuned for better compatibility and detection of different analytes; and (4) hydrogel biosensors can be made to be reusable and suitable for studying dynamic processes in real time. Water-soluble fluorescent nanocrystals are widely used for in vitro and in vivo biological imaging due to their unique optical properties, and hydrogels based on these allow the preservation of these properties in bulk composite macrostructures. Here we review the techniques for obtaining analyte-sensitive fluorescent hydrogels based on nanocrystals, the main methods used for detecting the fluorescent signal changes, and the approaches to the formation of inorganic fluorescent hydrogels via sol–gel phase transition using surface ligands of the nanocrystals.

Reversible Cu-Nanoparticle Formation in Soft Hydrogel Composites: Towards Write-Erase Displays and Fluorescence Detection

Abstract:In this study, we introduce a hydrogel-polymer microsphere (HPM) composite material constituted of PVA, glycerin, and polymer microspheres obtained from Pickering emulsions that are capable of adsorbing Cu2+ ions. The obtained HPM composite is soft, flexible, can be fully saturated with Cu2+ ions, and exhibits a reversible color transition from blue to black upon electrode contact or interaction with a reducing agent, due to in situ generation of copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs). Because of the color contrast between the locally generated Cu-NPs and the background, the HPM can be used as substrate for stamping different shapes or writing text. Further, the surface can be erased by an acidic solution, which makes it interesting as flexible write-erase displays. A second feature of the HPM is that it can function as a fluorescence detector of cyanide ions. An HPM whose surface has been stamped with an electrode, upon contacting an aqueous solution containing cyanide ions, begins fluorescing a yellow-green light around the patterned area. The displayed luminescence is irreversible and is preserved even after HPM's drying or lyophilization. This work lays a foundational framework for future exploration of the HPM composites in various technological applications, for sensing, circuit printing, and flexible displays.
Integration of target responsive hydrogel with cascaded enzymatic reactions and microfluidic paper-based analytic devices (µPADs) for point-of-care testing (POCT)

Abstract:Paper based microfluidics (µPADs) with advantages of portability, low cost, and ease of use have attracted extensive attention. Here we describe a novel method that integrates glucoamylase-trapped aptamer-crosslinked hydrogel for molecular recognition with cascaded enzymatic reactions for signal amplification and a µPAD for portable readout. Upon target introduction, the hydrogel decomposes to release glucoamylase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of amylose to produce a large amount of glucose. With a simple folding of the µPAD, the sample solution containing glucose product wicks and diffuses in parallel to each test-zone to carry out homogeneous assays, where glucose is used to produce I2 for brown color visualization through multiple enzymatic and chemical cascade reactions. Through color gradient changes based on different concentrations of the target, a semiquantitative assay is achieved by the naked eye, and quantitation can be obtained by handheld devices. Detection of cocaine in buffer and urine was performed to demonstrate the utility of the hydrogel-µPAD system. More importantly, the hydrogel-µPAD system can be extended to the detection of various targets by incorporating the corresponding aptamer into the hydrogel. The hydrogel-µPAD system reported here provides a new platform for portable, disposable and visual detection of a wide range of targets.
Multi-deformable interpenetrating network thermosensitive hydrogel fluorescent device for real-time and visual detection of nitrite

Abstract:Functionalized thermosensitive hydrogel materials exhibit excellent properties for the fabrication of sensing devices that enable real-time visual detection of food safety duo to their good plasticity and powerful loading capacity. Here, a ratiometric fluorescent device based on an interpenetrating network (IPN) thermosensitive hydrogel was designed to embed functionalized Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) and Blue Carbon dots (BCDs) composites in a multi-network structure to build a sensitive hazardous material nitrite (NO2-) chemsensor. The hydrogel was utilized poloxamer 407 (P407), lignin and cellulose to form stable IPN structure, which resulted in complementation and synergy, thereby strengthening its porous network structure. The combination of fluorescent nanoprobes with the porous network structure has the potential to enhance stable fluorescence signals and improve sensing sensitivity. Moreover, the thermosensitive liquid-solid transition characteristics of the hydrogel facilitate its preparation into diverse sensing devices following curing at room temperature. The hydrogel device, when combined with a smartphone system, converted image information into data information, thereby enabling the accurate quantification of NO2- with a detection limit of 9.38 nM in 2 s. The designed multi-functional hydrogel device is capable of real-time differentiation of NO2- dosage with the naked eye, offering a high-contrast, rapid-response sensing methodology for visual assessment of food freshness. This research contributes to the expansion of hydrogel materials applications and the detection of hazardous materials in food safety.
Luciferin-based fluorescent hydrogel as a pH sensor

Abstract:Hydrogel have been a great material for biomedical applications. In this study, fluorescent hydrogels formulated from carrageenan biopolymer and firefly luciferin, exhibited high fluorescence quantum yield and stability, thermo-reversibility, and high transparency. Importantly, the hydrogels are pH-responsive allowing them to be used as sensing materials for a range of pH from 3 to 6.5. The hydrogels may find potential applications as cheap and tailored materials in important fields such as pH sensor for wound healing or bioluminescence hydrogels for cell study.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In this study, we report a pH-responsive hydrogel-modified silicon nanowire field-effect transistor for pH sensing, whose modification is operated by spin coating, and whose performance is characterized by the electrical curve of field-effect transistors. The results show that the hydrogel sensor can measure buffer pH in a repeatable and stable manner in the pH range of 3–13, with a high pH sensitivity of 100 mV/pH. It is considered that the swelling of hydrogel occurring in an aqueous solution varies the dielectric properties of acrylamide hydrogels, causing the abrupt increase in the source-drain current. It is believed that the design of the sensor can provide a promising direction for future biosensing applications utilizing the excellent biocompatibility of hydrogels.

Abstract:A facilely prepared supramolecular photonic hydrogel biosensor is developed for high‐sensitivity detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) via synergistic repulsive force between nanoparticles embedded in photonic crystal structure and osmotic swelling pressure. High‐accuracy colorimetric detection can be realized in complex biofluidic environment via a smartphone, promoting point‐of‐care sensing and timely diagnosis of related pathological conditions. Structurally‐colored photonic hydrogels which are fabricated by introducing hydrogels into thin films or photonic crystal structures are promising candidates for biosensing. Generally, the design of photonic hydrogel biosensors is based on the sensor‐analyte interactions induced charge variation within the hydrogel matrix, or chemically grafting binding sites onto the polymer chains, to achieve significant volume change and color variation of the photonic hydrogel. However, relatively low anti‐interference capability or complicated synthesis hinder the facile and low‐cost fabrication of high‐performance photonic hydrogel biosensors. Here, a facilely prepared supramolecular photonic hydrogel biosensor is developed for high‐sensitivity detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which is an extensively considered clinical biomarker for a variety of diseases. Responding to ALP results in the broken supramolecular crosslinking and thus increased lattice distancing of the photonic hydrogel driven by synergistic repulsive force between nanoparticles embedded in photonic crystal structure and osmotic swelling pressure. The biosensor shows sensitivity of 7.3 nm spectral shift per mU mL−1 ALP, with detection limit of 0.52 mU mL−1. High‐accuracy colorimetric detection can be realized via a smartphone, promoting point‐of‐care sensing and timely diagnosis of related pathological conditions.

Abstract:A highly stretchable and self-adhesive wearable biosensor is prepared from nanozyme-catalyzed conductive hydrogels. The hydrogels are first prepared from a nanozyme (Ta–Ag) based on polyphenol (tannic acid, Ta) chelate with metal ions (silver ion, Ag+), which possesses peroxidase (POD)-like activity. After that, a huge number of free radicals are formed by the interaction between the Ta–Ag NPs and ammonium persulfate (APS), which initiate the hydrogel polymerization via a facile “one-pot” compositing strategy without ultraviolet (UV) or thermal treatment. The homogeneous distribution of nanozymes in the interpenetrating network of sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAAm) realizes a dermis-mimicking structure in the flexible conductor, named Ta–Ag–SA/PAAm. It simultaneously improves the mechanical properties and conductivity. Similar to the adhesion of mussels, the nanozymes contain abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, favoring the adhesiveness of hydrogels. Due to the capability of changing conductivity with the strain, the obtained hydrogels are able to accurately monitor different amplitudes of human activities in real time. In addition, the Ta–Ag nanozyme exhibits a good bacterial adhesion capability and thereby enhances the bactericidal efficiency of Ag. Based on the high performance of sensing and antibacterial activity, the obtained Ta–Ag–SA/PAAm hydrogels can be a promising candidate for a broad range of applications, such as adhesive epidemic biosensors and wearable medical patches.
