However, cycling of atmospheric iodine is still poorly understood because of uncertainties in iodine speciation in aerosols. Here we report iodine levels and speciation in marine aerosols collected along a cruise path from Shanghai to the Arctic Ocean. Abstract.Total iodine (TI) and water-soluble iodine species in the total suspended particle samples collected onboard a round-trip cruise from Shanghai, China to the Arctic Ocean were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and ion chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry respectively. Organic Coating on Sulfate and Soot Particles in Summer Arctic Atmosphere

Abstract:Abstract. Interaction of anthropogenic particles with radiation and clouds plays an important role on Arctic climate change. Mixing state of aerosols is a key parameter to influence aerosol-cloud and aerosol-radiation interaction. However, little is known on this parameter in the Arctic, preventing an accurate representation of this information in global models. Here we used transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (TEM/EDS), scanning TEM, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS), and atomic forces microscopy (AFM) to determine the size and mixing properties of individual particles at 100 nm–10 μm, with a particular focus on sulfate and carbonaceous particles. We found that non-sea salt sulfate particles with size range at 100–2000 nm were commonly coated with organic matter (OM) in summer. 20 % of sulfate particles also had soot inclusions which only appeared in the organic coating. The OM coating is estimated to contribute to 63 % of the particle volume on average. Theoretical optical calculations from the Mie code suggest that absorption cross section of individual OM-coated particles significantly increased when assuming the OM coating as light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC). The microscopic observations suggest that OM modulates the mixing structure of fine Arctic sulfate particles, which may determine their hygroscopicity and optical properties.
Summertime aerosol chemical components in the marine boundary layer of the Arctic Ocean

Abstract:Samples of aerosols from the marine boundary layer of the Arctic Ocean were collected aboard the R/V Xuelong during summer on the Second Chinese Arctic Research Expedition (July-September 2003). Synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) was used to determine chemical compositions of aerosol particles. Multivariate analysis of the SR-XRF data resolved a number of components (factors), which, on the basis of their chemical compositions and from their affiliation with specific meteorological flow patterns, were assigned physical meanings. Five factors explaining 94.7% of the total variance were identified. Ship emissions accounted for 35.3% of the variance (factor 1 (F1)) and are loaded significantly with S, Fe, V, and Ni. The total Fe emitted from ships globally was estimated at 8.60 x 10(6) kg yr(-1). Heavy-metal-rich factors included 34.0% of the variance (F2 and F3) and were interpreted to be pollution carried into the Arctic Ocean by long-range transport. Anthropogenic contributions from industrial regions to the Arctic Ocean during the summer vary and depend on the source locations. Air mass backward trajectories indicate that the metals including Hg, Pb, Cu, and Zn come mainly from northern Russia. The third source controlling the chemical compositions of aerosols was sea salt (F4, 12.8%). The role of sea salt decreased from the open sea to areas near pack ice. On the basis of the factor scores of aerosol samples, we infer that chlorine volatilization from sea salt may occur, enhanced by nitrogen and sulfur contamination emitted from ships. Because the global inventories of nitrogen and sulfur for ship exhausts are large, and halogens could have important consequences in possible tropospheric ozone destruction, the role of ships in influencing halogen depression in sea salt should be further investigated. Finally, we also identified a crustal factor (F5, 12.6%) and suggest that crustal elements (e.g., Ca) contaminating sea ice may become reinjected into the atmosphere as windblown aerosols.

Abstract:Total suspended particle (TSP) samples were collected onboard a round‐trip cruise from Shanghai, China to Prydz Bay, Antarctica from November 2005 to March 2006. Water soluble iodine species were measured using ion chromatography coupled to Inductively Coupled Plasma‐Mass Spectrometry (IC‐ICP‐MS). The results reveal that soluble organic iodine (SOI) is the most abundant fraction, accounting for approximately 70 % of total soluble iodine (TSI) on average. One unidentified organic iodine (UOI) signal was present in almost all of the samples and was responsible for up to 38.3% of TSI. The abundance of inorganic iodine species, iodate and iodide, was less than 30% of TSI. Iodide was significantly correlated with SOI suggesting a link between iodide formation and SOI decomposition. TSI levels varied considerably over the length of the voyage. In the coastal Antarctic enhanced level of TSI were found to be correlated with the air mass transport from the ice front sector.
Submicron Organic Aerosol Types in the Summertime Arctic: Mixing State, Geographic Distribution, and Drivers

Abstract:Abstract During the 2017 summertime Arctic cruise observation campaigns, we measured over 290,000 individual submicron particles and clustered them into two inorganic classes (dominated by sea salt, accounting for 38.6% by number fraction) and five organic classes (dominated by natural and anthropogenic organics, 61.4%), presenting a distinct difference in geographic distribution. In the high Arctic and marginal ice zone (81.1–84.6°N) compared with the low Arctic (Chukchi Sea, Svalbard, and Iceland, <80°N), ocean‐derived organic aerosols were more prevalent (73.6% vs. 37.1%). Specifically, we found sharp contrasts in the geographic distributions of OC‐Ca (organics internally mixed with calcium, 29.0% vs. 9.4%) and OC‐S (organics internally mixed with sulfate, 3.2% vs. 21.4%). Utilizing an explainable machine learning technique, we inferred that OC‐Ca was driven by wind‐blown sea ice and/or sea ice floes and/or bubble bursting within sea ice leads under low wind speed conditions in the high Arctic, while OC‐S tended to associate with elemental carbon, sulfate, and higher temperatures, potentially originating from combustion emissions at low latitude regions.

Abstract:Methanesulphonic acid (MSA) may play an important role in the climate change occurring in response to the warming of the Arctic Ocean. However, the spatial and temporal distributions of MSA in this region are poorly understood. We report on the MSA content of aerosols over oceans measured during the 3rd Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition (CHINARE2008) from July to September, 2008. Results show that the aerosol MSA content can be influenced by multiple processes in different areas. In coastal regions, airborne pollutants, especially nitric oxide, may strongly influence the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and increase the concentration of aerosol MSA. In remote areas of the Pacific and Arctic oceans, changes in plankton will indirectly influence the airborne MSA concentration. Moreover, we found fairly similar trends in the variation of the concentrations of total iodine (TI) and MSA in the Arctic during CHINARE2008, suggesting that iodine and MSA may come from similar sources in the Arctic. Compared with the findings from other two cruises, CHINARE1999 and CHINARE2012, we found that sea ice is an extremely important factor that influences the aerosol MSA content in the Arctic. Characteristics of individual aerosol particles in Arctic summer

Abstract:Samples of individual particle were collected around Svalbard island during 8-12August, 2013. Physicochemical characteristics of 2530 aerosol particles were analysed through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). Arctic aerosol particles were classified as five types: sea-salt, S-rich, Fe-rich, carbonaceous and mineral dust particles. Air masses showed either atmospheric circulation in the arctic ocean or transport of air from Svalbard and Greenland. Samples collected under the air mass of the arctic ocean mainly contained sea-salt particles (54.7% of total in the samples). Mineral dust may be transported from the land, because samples of air mass from Svalbard and Greenland were dominated by mineral dust particles (95.4% of total particles in the samples). We estimated the PM2.5 mass concentration ranging from 0.55μg/m3 to 0.72μg/m3 in Arctic atmosphere.
Iodine Speciation and Size Distribution in Ambient Aerosols at a Coastal New Particle Formation Hotspot in China

Abstract:Intense new particle formation (NPF) events were observed in the coastal atmosphere during algae growth and farming season at Xiangshan gulf of the east China coast. High nucleation-mode iodine concentrations measured by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/Q-TOF-MS) confirmed that the NPF events were induced by iodine species. Our study provides important information on iodine speciation, size distributions, and its role in NPF in the context of heavy air pollution in China's coastal areas. For the first time, we identified 5 inorganic iodine species, 45 organic iodine compounds (35 molecular formulas), and a group of iodide–organic adducts in aerosols. The concentrations and size distributions of iodine species down to 10 nm were measured during the iodine-induced NPF, continental NPF, and non-NPF days at the coastal site and compared to those at an inland site. The iodine in the above four aerosol sample types were characterized by iodate, aromatic iodine compounds, iodoacetic acid or iodopropenoic acid, and iodide–organic adducts, respectively. Iodide and organic iodine compounds were found in the nucleation-mode particles; however, it is still not clear whether they contributed to nucleation or just new particle growth. Wild algae, as well as farmed algae, could be an important NPF source in China's coastal areas.
Chemical composition of summertime High Arctic aerosols using chemical ionization mass spectrometry

Abstract:Low-level clouds and fogs play a key role in the radiative balance over the Arctic pack ice by regulating surface energy fluxes. The radiative features of clouds are dependent on the amount of airborne aerosol particles and their properties, since the particles can act as CCN (cloud condensation nuclei) and INP (ice nucleating particles). As the Arctic climate is currently warming, the local emissions and formation mechanisms of aerosols are expected to change, possibly leading to altered cloud properties.We measured aerosol chemical composition using FIGAERO-CIMS (Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer coupled to a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols) analysis of samples collected during the MOCCHA campaign (Microbiology-Ocean-Cloud-Coupling in the High Arctic) close to the North Pole in 2018. The goal of the campaign was to investigate natural aerosol emissions from the ocean to the atmosphere during summertime in terms of local sources and potential contribution to cloud formation. The sampling period was therefore around the seasonal sea ice minimum in September. With our CIMS setup, the sample molecules are ionised by iodide ions (I-). The negatively charged adducts are then separated by mass, allowing for characterisation on a molecular level. This is the first time aerosol chemical composition of High Arctic aerosols has been measured using this technique. As the current knowledge about the atmospheric composition in this region is low, our results suggest a potential for using this method for further aerosol chemical characterisation in the pristine Arctic environment.Our analysis shows that sulphur-containing compounds were most abundant in the aerosol samples, including sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide, methanesulphonic acid (MSA) and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). MSA and DMSO are oxidation products of dimethyl sulphide (DMS), which is released by marine phytoplankton to the atmosphere under ice-free conditions. Non-sea-salt sulphate (nss-SO42-) aerosols are known to be efficient CCN. The results will be compared to aerosol samples from the NASCENT campaign (Ny-&#197;lesund Aerosol and Cloud Experiment), analysed using the same CIMS technique. The campaign runs for a year during 2019-2020 at the Zeppelin station in Svalbard. Our findings are expected to contribute to better understanding of the connection between aerosols and cloud formation in the polar regions and the effects on the ocean and pack ice.
The characteristics of atmospheric aerosol particle number size distribution in Arctic Yellow River Station influenced by long-range transport of autumn air mass

Abstract:Measurement of particle number size distribution(PNSD)in the size range of 10~400 nm was car-ried out at Yellow River Station in Arctic in September 2013. During the measurement,it was found that the val-ue of hourly mean number concentration of 300~400 cm-3 presented most frequently,with a mean value of 350 cm-3. The number concentration was much higher than the values reported by the study at Zeppelin Station in Ny-?lesund and the cruises in the central Arctic between July and September. The number concentration of the three modes(nucleation mode,Aitken mode and accumulation mode)was 35,122 and 193 cm-3,respectively. There was no new particle formation event observed during the measurement. The PNSD was characterized by bimodal distribution,with one mode peaking at 30 nm and the other at 115 nm,respectively. The PNSD was dominated by the accumulation mode,with the geometric mean diameter of 100~110 nm. Based on the analysis of the indi-vidual particle samples,it was found that the chemical component during the measurement was mainly contribut-ed by the sea salt particles. However,when air mass from Norwegian Sea and Northern Europe became domi-nant,the soot particles,sulfur-rich and carbonaceous particles were also observed,revealing the influence by the anthropogenic emissions.
Low contributions of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) chemistry to atmospheric aerosols over the high Arctic Ocean

Abstract:The Arctic Ocean is continuously warming, resulting in sea ice retreat, which significantly impacts the marine biogenic sulfur cycle. The formation of aerosols from DMS oxidation and their climatic effects in polar regions are of great concern. However, the impact of DMS chemistry on atmospheric aerosols in the high Arctic Ocean (AO) is still unclear due to the limitation of field observations and datasets. Gaseous methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and aerosol chemical species (MSA, SO 4 2− and DMA, etc.) were determined simultaneously with a high time resolution (1 h) in the AO and Pacific Ocean (PO) to reveal the DMS chemistry in these regions. The particulate MSA concentration indicated significant spatial variation with a decreasing tendency from the low latitude oceans to high AO. Extremely low particulate MSA concentrations were observed in the high AO, with an average of only 7.42 ± 6.6 ng·m −3 . In contrast, highest particulate MSA concentrations, with an average of 168.6 ± 167.6 ng·m −3 were observed in the mid-latitude regions (45°–60°N) in July. Sea salt aerosols were the most dominant source in the high Arctic Ocean, accounting for 88.78% of the total suspended particle mass, which was much larger than the values in the other regions. Low DMS chemistry was determined based on the low DMS emissions in the high latitude (HL, 75°–85°N) region. These results highlight the contribution of DMS chemistry to atmospheric aerosols and extend the knowledge of how biogenic aerosols impact the regional atmosphere in the high AO.

Sea Salt Aerosols As A Reactive Surface for Inorganic and Organic Acidic Gases in the Arctic Troposphere

Abstract:Sea salt aerosols (SSA) are dominant particles in the Arctic atmosphere and determine the polar radiative balance. SSA react with acidic pollutants that lead to changes in physical and chemical properties of their surface, which in turn alter their hygroscopic and optical properties. Transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry was used to analyze morphology, composition, size, and mixing state of individual SSA at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, in summertime. Individual fresh SSA contained cubic NaCl coated by certain amounts of MgCl2 and CaSO4. Individual partially aged SSA contained irregular NaCl coated by a mixture of NaNO3, Na2SO4, Mg(NO3)2, and MgSO4. The comparison suggests the hydrophilic MgCl2 coating in fresh SSA likely intrigued the heterogeneous reactions at the beginning of SSA and acidic gases. Individual fully aged SSA normally had Na2SO4 cores and an amorphous coating of NaNO3. Elemental mappings of individual SSA particles revealed that as the particles ageing Cl gradually decreased, the C, N, O, and S content increased. 12C- mapping from nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry indicates that organic matter increased in the aged SSA compared with the fresh SSA. 12C- line scan further shows that organic matter was mainly concentrated on the aged SSA surface. These new findings indicate that this mixture of organic matter and NaNO3 on particle surfaces likely determines their hygroscopic and optical properties. These abundant SSA as reactive surfaces adsorbing inorganic and organic acidic gases can shorten acidic gas lifetime and influence the possible gaseous reactions in the Arctic atmosphere, which need to be incorporated into atmospheric chemical models in the Arctic troposphere.
Physico-chemical Characteristics of Individual Aerosol Particles in Marine Atmosphere on South Hemisphere

Abstract:During the 29th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHIANRE), individual particle samples were collected from South China to Antarctic during November 2012 to April 2013. A transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (TEM-EDS) was employed to analyze the morphology, mixing state, composition, and relative abundances of individual aerosol particles. Atmospheric particles were classified into four types: sea salt, mineral, S-rich and C-rich. Sea salt aerosols (SSA) were dominant in the marine particles from South China to Antarctic, and they were further divided into three sub-types: fresh SSA, partially aged SSA, and fully aged SSA. Partially and fully aged SSA accounted for 86% of total SSA number. Interestingly, surface of partially aged SSA and fully aged SSA contained abundant rod-like Na2 SO4 . Mineral dust particles increased in the coastal areas which were influenced by continental air. In addition, we found that S-rich particles were abundant at two sampling sites (the middle eastern of Indian Ocean and Antarctic inland). The back trajectories of air masses indicated that these S-rich particles were mainly formed via the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emitted from the marine phytoplanktons. Our study suggests that the SSA aging process in the South Hemisphere atmosphere was controlled by the DMS which is different from the SSA aging under the influence of anthropogenic pollutants in the North Hemisphere.

Abstract:Studies about methyl iodide (CH3I), an important atmospheric iodine species over oceans, had been conducted in some maritime regions, but the understanding of the spatial distribution of CH3I on a global scale is still limited. In this study, we reports atmospheric CH3I over oceans during the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Research Expeditions. CH3I varied considerably with the range of 0.17 to 2.9 pptv with absent of ship emission. The concentration of CH3I generally decreased with increasing latitudes, except for higher levels in the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere than in the low latitudes. For sea areas, the Norwegian Sea had the highest CH3I concentrations with a median of 0.91 pptv, while the Central Arctic Ocean had the lowest concentrations with all values below 0.5 pptv. CH3I concentration over oceans was affected by many parameters, including sea surface temperature, salinity, dissolved organic carbon, biogenic emissions and input from continents, with distinctive dominant factor in different regions, indicating complex biogeochemical processes of CH3I on a global scale.

Abstract:Methyl iodide (CH3I) released from ocean is an important carrier of iodine, which plays an important role in ozone depletion in the atmosphere. Depletion of ozone has increased the amount of ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth's surface and recent global warming has caused oceanic acidification as well as dust events, but how these environmental changes will affect CH3I concentration in the ocean is unclear. In this study, the spatial distributions and sources of CH3I in the atmosphere, seawater, and sediment porewater were measured in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) between June and July 2018. Higher concentrations in the atmosphere, seawater, and sediment were found in the YS than in the ECS, and surface seawater emissions were discovered to be the major contributors of atmospheric CH3I concentrations. Anthropogenic pollutants could explain significant spatial variation in the distribution of CH3I. High concentrations of CH3I in sediment porewater increased diffusion into bottom waters, with diffusive fluxes of 0.2 - 6.5 nmol m-2 d-1. Preliminary results during the in situ seawater incubation experiments showed that the photochemical production rate of CH3I ranged from 0.008 to 0.214 pmol L-1 h-1 under ultraviolet light, and an enhancement emission of CH3I from phytoplankton occurred with the addition of dust, while a reduction of CH3I appeared under lower pH conditions.

Abstract:Iodine intersects with the marine biogeochemical cycles of several major elements and can influence air quality through reactions with tropospheric ozone. Iodine is also an element of interest in paleoclimatology, whereby iodine-to-calcium ratios in marine carbonates are widely used as a proxy for past ocean redox state. While inorganic iodine in seawater is found predominantly in its reduced and oxidized anionic forms, iodide (I − ) and iodate (IO 3 − ), the rates, mechanisms and intermediate species by which iodine cycles between these inorganic pools are poorly understood. Here, we address these issues by characterizing the speciation, composition and cycling of iodine in the upper 1,000 m of the water column at Station ALOHA in the subtropical North Pacific Ocean. We first obtained high-precision profiles of iodine speciation using isotope dilution and anion exchange chromatography, with measurements performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). These profiles indicate an apparent iodine deficit in surface waters approaching 8% of the predicted total, which we ascribe partly to the existence of dissolved organic iodine that is not resolved during chromatography. To test this, we passed large volumes of seawater through solid phase extraction columns and analyzed the eluent using high-performance liquid chromatography ICP-MS. These analyses reveal a significant pool of dissolved organic iodine in open ocean seawater, the concentration and complexity of which diminish with increasing water depth. Finally, we analyzed the rates of IO 3 − formation using shipboard incubations of surface seawater amended with 129 I − . These experiments suggest that intermediate iodine species oxidize to IO 3 − much faster than I − does, and that rates of IO 3 − formation are dependent on the presence of particles, but not light levels. Our study documents the dynamics of iodine cycling in the subtropical ocean, highlighting the critical role of intermediates in mediating redox transformations between the major inorganic iodine species.

Abstract:Ozone is an important reactive gas in the troposphere; it has been frequently used to estimate atmospheric oxidation capacity. However, there are few data of surface ozone over the Arctic Ocean, especially the central Arctic Ocean. Here, surface ozone in the marine boundary layer along the cruise path during the 5th Chinese Arctic Research Expedition (June to September, 2012) was investigated. The latitudes and longitudes covered in the cruise were 31.1°N–87.7°N and 9.3°E–90°E–168.4°W. The 1-h-averaged ozone varied from 9.4 ppbv to 124.5 ppbv along the cruise. The highest mixing ratios appeared in the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan while the lowest in the Chukchi Sea. The relatively high ozone levels over the East China Sea, the Sea of Japan, and offshore Iceland were caused by transport of precursors and/or ozone from the nearby continent. Ozone mixing ratio decreasing by ~2 ppbv/° with increasing latitude was observed during 31–45°N covering the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan, and during 62–69°N covering offshore Iceland. Over the entire Arctic Ocean, ozone levels were relatively low, varying from 9.4 ppbv to 36.1 ppbv with an average of 23.8±4.6 (mean±standard deviation) ppbv, which was not statistically different with data observed at Barrow observatory during the same period. Unlike ozone over contaminated areas, a slight increasing trend of ozone in 69–87°N was observed. This phenomenon may be ascribed to the role of both vertical transport and chemical processes due to solar radiation.

Abstract:Ice nucleating particles (INPs) catalyze primary ice formation in Arctic low-level mixed-phase clouds, influencing their persistence and radiative properties. Knowledge of the abundance and sources of INP over the remote Arctic Ocean is scarce due to limited data coverage, particularly in the Eurasian Arctic. This study presents summertime measurements of INP concentrations in seawater, fog water and air from the ship-based Arctic Century Expedition, exploring the Barents, Kara, and Laptev Seas, and the adjacent high Arctic islands and archipelagos in August and September 2021. Heat sensitivity tests of ambient aerosols revealed that heat-liable, biogenic INPs make up the majority of Arctic INP populations at temperatures above -20 °C, and to a lesser extent down to -25°C. INP content in fog water is found to be similar to ambient aerosol, indicating that INP in marine air could also act as cloud condensation nuclei. Measurements of aerosolized INPs using an on-board sea-spray aerosol bubble tank generator exhibit a positive correlation with ambient INP concentrations, but not with INP abundance in seawater samples. INP concentrations in air derived from sea water samples (using a NaCl conversion factor representative for the Arctic) were significantly lower than those measured in ambient air or bubble tank experiments. INP concentrations in bubble tank experiments positively correlated with the phosphate and fluorescence signals in the water. This suggests an important role of the aerosolization mechanism for preferentially partitioning biogenic INPs to the atmosphere.
