Abstract:Phase change material (PCM) capsules have potential applications as a thermal management material in energy-efficient buildings. It is desirable for PCM capsules to have high core-loading and sub-micrometer particle size. Herein, it is reported that interfacial reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization can be a convenient method to synthesize high PCM loading polymeric capsule latex. It is found that increasing particle size should be helpful to obtain well-defined capsules of high PCM loading but post-addition of surfactant should be carried out to remain the colloidal stability during polymerization. In the case of high PCM loading, a limiting conversion is observed. Increasing crosslinker (DVB) level up to 20 wt% based on monomers can increase the limiting conversion up to 94%. The well-defined paraffin capsules of 365 nm in diameter is synthesized with 67 wt% PCM loading. The paraffin capsules have a crystallization/melting heat around 105 J g(-1). Replacing paraffin with pure n-octadecane, the crystallization/melting heat is increased up to 144 J g(-1).
Synergistic enhancement of phase change materials through three-dimensional porous layered covalent triazine framework/expanded graphite composites for solar energy storage and beyond

Abstract:The challenges of leakage and low thermal conductivity have emerged as obstacles that hinder the advancement of long-term thermal stability and versatility of phase change material (PCM). This study aims to address the challenges of high leakage rate and low thermal conductivity associated with paraffin wax (PW) in phase change energy storage. A composite PCM with a layered microstructure was successfully synthesized by physically blending expanded graphite (EG), covalent triazine framework (CTF), and adsorbed PW. For the first time, the encapsulation of (phase change materials) PCMs using covalent organic frameworks (COF) was realized. Subsequently, various aspects of the prepared materials were thoroughly characterized and analyzed, demonstrating excellent performance. The material exhibited a leakage rate of only 0.18 %, a thermal conductivity approximately 10 times higher than that of pure PW, and a high latent heat of phase change (111.26 J/g). After undergoing 500 thermal cycles of storage and release, the latent heat of phase change remained stable at around 72 %, indicating robust thermal cycle stability. Furthermore, photothermal tests revealed an impressive photothermal conversion efficiency of 86.9 % for the composite PCM, highlighting its remarkable photothermal conversion capability and efficiency. This study provides an innovative solution to the challenges of high leakage rate and low thermal conductivity in paraffin-based phase change energy storage. Additionally, it delivers valuable theoretical guidance and an experimental foundation for the development of more efficient and stablePCMs.

Abstract:Organic phase change materials (PCMs) have great potential for efficient thermal energy storage and passive thermal management applications due to their non-corrosiveness, high heat storage capacity and stable operating temperature. However, low thermal conductivity and easy leakage seriously restrict the actual application. Meanwhile, heat transfer enhancers typically have a serious negative effect on the heat storage capacity of the PCMs. In this paper, a novel strategy for preparing high performance shape-stable composite phase change materials (CPCMs) is reported, utilizing paraffin wax (PW) as the energy storage material and expanded graphite (EG) as heat transfer enhancers and supporting material, especially in which low melting-point alloy (LMA) micro particles having same phase change temperature as PW are employed with two purposes: one is to provide extra latent heat, and another is to construct a hybrid three-dimensional thermal conduction network in microscale to achieve synergistic thermal conduction with EG. The resulting CPCMs exhibit excellent characteristics in energy storage capacity, thermal conductivity, and thermal cycling stability. The thermal conductivity of ternary CPCM can reach 5.842 W m −1 K −1 when the LMA and EG loading are 4.55 wt% and 9 wt%, which is about 16.4 times higher than that of pure PW, with no obvious volumetric latent heat reduction. This work provides a novel and promising approach for the preparation of CPCMs with high and fast storage properties.

Abstract:3D porous structural materials are proved to be enticing candidates for the fabrication of high-performance organic phase change materials (PCMs), but the stringent fabrication process and poor processability greatly hampered their commercialization. Herein, flexible leakage-proof composite PCMs with pronounced comprehensive performance are fabricated by a scalable polymer swelling strategy without using any solvent, in which the paraffin wax (PW) segment is confined in a robust flexible 3D polymer network, giving rise to the composite PCMs with excellent form stability even at 160 °C, a high latent heat energy storage density of 133.6 J/g, and an outstanding thermal conductivity of up to ∼5.11 W/mK. More importantly, the mass production of the flexible composite phase change fiber, film, and bulk products can be achieved by adopting mature processing technologies. These resultant composite PCMs exhibit promising thermal management ability to solve the overheating problem of electronics and high-efficiency solar-thermal energy conversion capacity.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) are vital for solar-thermal conversion and energy storage in the field of clean energy utilization. However, the preparation of high-performance PCMs with superior photo-thermal conversion on a large scale remains challenging. In this work, an inexpensive, scalable, and facile strategy for preparing composite PCMs with high photo-thermal conversion efficiency was presented. The PW@MoS2-MF composite PCMs were synthesized by the covalent and non-covalent topological adhesion on melamine foam (MF) of MoS2 as photo-thermal additives and the vacuum impregnation of paraffin wax (PW). The results showed that MoS2, MF, and PW were bonded physically. The PW@MoS2-MF composite PCMs had good shape stability, thermal stability, and cycle stability. Most importantly, the PW loading capacity of the PW@10MoS(2)-MF was up to 88.97 %, and the corresponding phase change enthalpy and melting temperature were 188.95 J/g and 47.44 degrees C, respectively. In addition, the PW@10MoS(2)-MF could convert sunlight to thermal energy and then store it in the composite PCM. A superior photo-thermal conversion and storage efficiency of 95 % could be achieved. These excellent properties would endow the PW@10MoS(2)-MF composite PCM with a bright prospect in the popularization and industrialization of solar heat storage and utilization.

Abstract:Phase change energy storage materials are widely used in thermal management because they reduce energy consumption and effectively address issues such as energy supply and demand mismatches. However, challenges such as leakage in solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs), flammability in organic solid-liquid PCMs, and supercooling and phase separation in inorganic solid-liquid PCMs still need to be resolved for their practical applications. In this study, we used methyl palmitate, dodecahydrate disodium hydrogen phosphate, and decahydrate sodium carbonate as the main PCMs, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as an emulsifier and thickener, and silica aerogel as the encapsulating material to successfully prepare a novel shape-stabilized organic/inorganic composite PCM (CPCM). The prepared CPCM exhibits excellent shape stability and flame retardancy without supercooling or phase separation issues. In addition, the prepared CPCM has a high latent heat value (174.1 J/g) and a suitable phase transition temperature (22.9 °C), and its thermal performance remains basically unchanged after 100 heating/cooling cycles. Furthermore, this CPCM also demonstrates exceptional performance in building thermal management. This study provides a new solution to the problems of flammability, supercooling, phase separation and easy leakage of CPCM currently used in the field of building thermal management.

Abstract:The phase change sub-microcapsules (PCMCs) with the particle size of 100 nm to 1 μm have a great application potential in the field of hybrid materials for solar energy storage, while the preparation of PCMCs remains challenging without ultrasonic treatment and high-speed (>1000 rpm) homogenization. Herein, PCMCs with readily tunable phase change properties are prepared via facile, robust ab initio emulsion polymerization. The PCMCs present the quasi-monodispersed particle morphologies with the tunable particle size from 159 to 383 nm depending on the loading content of acrylic acid and the free surfactant. The latent heat density and phase change temperature of the PCMCs can be tuned from 66.6 to 115.2 J/g and from 20.8 to 65.4 °C, respectively, depending on the loading content and the type of phase change cores. The PCMCs confirm the latent heat efficiency of about 1, the high thermal reliability, and the high shape stability. The PCMCs can be functionalized by polyaniline coatings with an efficient photothermal effect. The robust, versatile approach to functionalized PCMCs can provide an alternative opportunity for the development of the next-generation smart thermal energy materials.

Abstract:We devised a functional form-stable composite phase-change materials (PCMs) to achieve a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous carbon aerogel structure for encapsulating polyethylene glycol (PEG). A novel homogeneity reinforced carbon aerogel with a well-interconnected porous structure was constructed by combining a flexible carbon resource from biomass guar gum with hard brittle carbon from polyimide, to overcome severe shrinkage and poor mechanical performance of traditional carbon aerogel. The supporting carbon aerogel encapsulated PEG produced the novel composite PCMs with good structure stability and comprehensive energy-storage performance. The results showed that the composite PCMs displayed a well-defined 3D interconnected structure, and their energy-storage capacities were 171.5 J/g and 169.5 J/g, which changed only slightly after 100 thermal cycles, and the composites could maintain the equilibrium temperature at 50.0 °C-58.1 °C for about 760.3 s. The thermal conductivity of the composites could reach 0.62 W m-1 K-1, which effectively enhanced the thermal response rate. And the composite PCMs exhibited good leakage-proof performance and excellent light-thermal conversion. The compressive strength of the composite PCMs can improve up to 1.602 MPa. Results indicate that this strategy can be efficiently used to develop novel composite PCMs with improved comprehensive thermal performance and high light-thermal conversion.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) store and release energy in the phase change processes. In recent years, PCMs have gained increasing attention due to their excellent properties such as high latent heat storage capacity, appropriate solid-liquid phase change temperature, thermal reliability, and low cost. Herein, classification, characteristics, and evaluation criteria of organic/composite PCMs are systematically illustrated, and some typical preparation methods are introduced, such as in-situ polymerization, interfacial polymerization, spray drying method, porous materials adsorption method, sol-gel method, meltimpregnated and mixing method, electrospinning method, vacuum infiltration and ultrasonic method are introduced. In addition, this review presents some applications of PCMs in the utilization of solar energy, building materials, air conditioning, industrial waste heat recovery, and military camouflage and stealth. Finally, the development tendency of PCMs is discussed.

Abstract:Conventional thermophysical latent heat storage based on solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs) has been suffering three long-standing bottlenecks—i.e., relatively low storage density, short storage duration, and heat degradation during one charging/discharging cycle. In this perspective, we introduce a class of recently developed photoswitchable PCMs that have the potential to address these issues. Such PCMs present simultaneously the photon-induced molecule isomerization and thermally induced solid-liquid phase change, which endows them with dual and switchable phase change behaviors. This unique characteristic opens up new paths for exploring the unconventional thermal energy storage and upgrade technologies and even developing novel solar thermal fuels. However, there is still a long way to go for the practical applications of these materials and the derived technologies. Tuning the thermodynamic parameters, enhancing kinetics of isomerization and phase change, improving energy conversion efficiency, and modulating the absorption spectrum are four key issues that need further consideration. This article systematically summarizes the progress in photoswitchable PCMs, provides a deep insight into their potential applications, analyzes the challenges ahead, and proposes future research directions and solutions to continue the path.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) present promising potential in the application of thermal management. Nevertheless, low thermal conductivity and risk of liquid leakage hindered the development of PCMs with broad adoption. Here, we fabricate a shape-stable composite phase change material by encapsulating polyethylene glycol (PEG) into a dual-network hydrogel, which was modified using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes and silver nanowires (AgNWs). With the synergistic effect of MXene nanosheets and AgNWs, the composite material that was prepared demonstrates a significant increase in thermal conductivity, reaching a value of 0.64 (W/m·K) and also exhibits a suitable photo-thermal conversion efficiency (88.9%). Moreover, the resulting composite PCM with high-level of PEG loading (90.1%) deliver a remarkable phase change enthalpy (124.8 J/g), highlighting its excellent energy storage capability. Additionally, the final composite displays reliable structural stability and exceptional thermal management performance by reducing the operational temperature of a typical lithium-ion battery by over 12 °C during a 3C discharge process. We demonstrate a promising approach for developing composite PCM for thermal management.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) composites are of great importance for a wide range of applications in energy conversion and storage, waste heat recovery and utilization, thermal energy management in building, electronic devices cooling and heat insulation, etc. Herein, a novel strategy for the fabrication of PCM composites for solar/electro energy conversion and storage is reported. The polypyrrole (PPy) coated conjugated microporous polymers/expanded graphene (EG) carbon aerogels/HDA (PCMPECAs/HDA) composites were firstly obtained via Sonogashira–Hagihara cross-coupling reaction followed by a carbonization treatment, PPy coating and finally 1-Hexadecylamine (HDA) impregnation. The introduction of EG and PPy was to improve the porosity, thermal conductivity and photothermal performance. The resultant PCMPECAs/HDA composites exhibited excellent comprehensive performances, including relatively high thermal conductivity of up to 234.0% that of HDA, high energy storage density up to 205.10 kJ/kg, excellent shape and thermal stability and a remarkable photothermal conversion and storage efficiency of up to 93.5%, respectively. And after 300 times thermal and cooling cycles, the latent heat of PCMPECAs/HDA still remains up to 150.20 kJ/kg. Besides, the resultant composites also manifest excellent electro-thermal effect at low voltage. Due to the aforementioned advantages, PCMPECAs/HDA composites possess great potential applications in solar/electric energy conversion and storage.

Polydopamine-coated metal-organic framework-based composite phase change materials for photothermal conversion and storage

Abstract:The liquid leakage and weak solar absorption capacity of organic phase change materials (PCMs) seriously hinder the efficient utilization of solar energy and thermal energy storage. To address these issues, we prepared nanoporous metal organic framework (Ni-MOF) for the vacuum infiltration of paraffin wax (PW), followed by the coating of solar-absorbing functional polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of PW@MOF for photothermal conversion and storage. As an efficient photon harvester, PDA coating endows PW@MOF/PDA composite PCMs with excellent photothermal conversion and storage properties due to the robust broadband solar absorption capability in the UV-vis region. Resultantly, our prepared PW@MOF/PDA composite PCMs exhibit a high photothermal conversion and storage efficiency of 91.2%, while that of PW@MOF composite PCMs is only zero. In addition, PW@MOF/PDA composite PCMs also exhibit excellent thermal stability, shape stability, energy storage stability, and photothermal conversion stability. More importantly, this coating strategy is universal by integrating different MOFs and solar absorbers, showing the potential to accelerate the major breakthroughs of high-efficiency MOF-based photothermal composite PCMs in solar energy utilization.

Abstract:The single function and leakage of organic phase change materials (OPCMs) used alone considerably limit the scope of their large-scale applications. An efficient method of addressing this issue is by adding functional fillers and porous scaffolds to OPCMs. In this study, a novel CuS-coated carbonized melamine foam (CMF)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) framework (CMF/rGO/CuS) was developed for the preparation of stable multifunctional OPCMs. The functional materials rGO and CuS were used as reinforcing materials, and CMF was used as a supporting material. Paraffin wax (PW), a thermal storage substance, was encapsulated in the CMF/rGO/CuS framework by vacuum-assisted impregnation to obtain a PW@CMF/rGO/CuS composite with excellent comprehensive properties. When the concentration of the conductive filler CuS was 2.0 wt%, the conductivity of the PW@CMF/rGO/CuS 2.0was 73.7 % more than that of pure PW, and its photothermal conversion efficiency exceeded 90 %. Meanwhile, CMF/rGO/CuS endowed the composite with a thermal conductivity of 0.2525 W m −1 K −1 , which was 33.6 % higher than that of pure PW. Finally, PW@CMF/rGO/CuS demonstrated high thermal cycling and thermal cycling stability with good application prospects in various fields.

Abstract:Organic phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted considerable attention for thermal energy storage applications because of their non-toxicity, suitable working temperature range and excellent thermal/chemical stability. However, most traditional organic PCMs have small molecular structures and are prone to leakage during fusion. To address this problem and enhance the shape-stability of organic PCMs, nanosphere-shaped porphyrin-ferrocenyl conjugated microporous polymers (PFCMPs) with high porosity (∼ 650 m2/g) were solvothermally synthesized using a Diels-Alder reaction between 1,1′-ferrocenedicarboxaldehyde and pyrrole in the presence of glacial acetic acid and anhydrous Lewis acids (FeCl3, AlCl3, and CuCl2). The PFCMPs were then encapsulated with PCMs, that is, 1-octadecanol (ODA), to prepare the composite materials of The optimized composite exhibited a high latent heat (up to 153.8 J/g), excellent reversibility (negligible change in latent heat upon 100 cycles of heating-cooling), good shape stability, and long heat storage durability (425 s), making it a promising candidate for solar thermal energy engineering and management.

Abstract:How to improve thermal conductivity as well as energy conversion efficiencies and to prevent melting leakage of solid–liquid phase change materials (PCMs) has been the essential challenges for the development of energy storage technology for storing a tremendous amount of waste heat and renewable and sustainable solar energy. Here, we reported the fabrication of high-performance form-stable composite PCMs (CPCMs) using the thermal conductive 3D-HPC carriers produced from the pyrolysis of porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymer hydrogels to confine the polyethylene glycol (PEG) PCMs. The porous 3D network PAN gel templates generate hierarchical cavities with micro/mesopores on the skeleton after pyrolysis which provides more space as well as the capillary adsorption and chemical interaction for the storage of PEG PCMs. The 3D-HPC/PEG CPCMs show high energy storage density (as high as 173.5 J g−1), high phase transformation efficiency and excellent thermal cycle stability. The carbon scaffold highly enhanced the thermal conductivity of CPCMs ∼ 10 times of the pure PEG and ensured its optical/electric-thermal energy conversion performance. This study demonstrates a facile, efficient and green way to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon with controllable porosity and degree of graphitization for improving the energy storage density, thermal conductivity, shape stability and energy conversion performance of PCMs.

Facile and low energy consumption synthesis of microencapsulated phase change materials with hybrid shell for thermal energy storage

Abstract:We designed a photocurable pickering emulsion polymerization to create microencapsulated phase change materials (MicroPCM) with polymer-silica hybrid shell. The emulsion was stabilized by modified SiO2 particles without any surfactant or dispersant. The polymerization process can be carried out at ambient temperature only for 5 min ultraviolet radiation, which is a low-energy procedure. The resultant capsules were shown a good core-shell structure and uniform in size. The surface of the microcapsules was covered by SiO2 particles. According to the DSC and TGA examinations, the microcapsules has good thermal energy storage-release performance, enhanced thermal reliability and thermal stability. When ratio of MMA/n-octadecane was 1.5/1.5. The encapsulation efficiency of the microcapsules reached 62.55%, accompanied with 122.31 J/g melting enthalpy. The work is virtually applicable to the construction of a wide variety of organic-inorganic hybrid shell MicroPCM. Furthermore, with the application of this method, exciting opportunities may arise for realizing rapid, continuous and large-scale industrial preparation of MicroPCM.
Grid structure phase change composites with effective solar/electro-thermal conversion for multi-functional thermal application

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) have high energy storage density and stable phase transition temperature, and are one of the most promising thermal storage and management materials. However, the PCMs’ shape instability, poor light absorption, low electrical and thermal conductivity seriously hinder their multi-functional application. Herein, a three-dimensional carbon aerogel with grid structure, large porosity, and hierarchical porous structure was prepared from resource-rich plant straw for supporting PCMs. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) as thermal energy guest was encapsulated into carbon aerogel by simple vacuum impregnation. The obtained PEG/carbon aerogel composites show high loading rate of PCMs(>97%), high thermal storage density (>185 J g−1), stable shape, and effective solar/electro-thermal conversion. The grid structure carbon aerogel as efficient thermal and electron transfer pathways guarantee effective solar/electro-thermal conversion of composites. PEG encapsulated in each lattice as a thermal functional unit realizes the thermal storage and management. Especially, grid-structure composites realized fast and uniform electro-thermal conversion and storage under low voltage. This work provides a feasible, economic, and large-scale preparation strategy for the multi-functional PCMs. The multi-functional composites have broad application prospects in solar energy capture and storage, waste power recycling, building energy saving, smart thermal management and so on.

Abstract:Due to their high latent heat capacity near the phase change temperature, phase change materials (PCMs) have been extensively employed in passive thermal management and energy storage. Low thermal conductivity and leakage are, nevertheless, two ongoing limitations in PCMs thermal applications. In this work, a novel absorption polymerization process was carried out to prepare poly(methyl methacrylate)/expanded graphite/n-octanoic acid (PMMA/EG/OA) phase change composites (PCCs) having high thermal conductivity, enthalpy, encapsulation efficiency, as well as leakproofness. The PMMA/EG/OA PCCs are prepared in a two-step process: absorption of OA and methyl methacrylate (MMA) into the EG networks; and subsequent polymerization of MMA to cover the EG absorbed OA. The PCCs exhibit a latent heat capacity greater than 110 J/g, an encapsulation efficiency of approximately 100 %, and a thermal conductivity of 0.75–3.58 W/(m·K) at EG loadings of 6–15 wt%. Moreover, the PCCs display outstanding dynamical responsiveness and prolonged cycling reliability. Absorption polymerization is an efficient and profitable approach for producing high-performing PCCs that can be used for a variety of thermal-related areas, including thermal harvesting for renewable energy, building energy conservation, as well as thermal management of electrical devices.
