Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The present study identified and compared the coping strategies of Chinese American, Korean American, and Mexican American breast cancer survivors (BCS).METHODS: Six focus groups were conducted with Chinese American (n = 21), Korean American (n = 11), and Mexican American (n = 9) BCS. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated for thematic content analysis of coping experiences and strategies.RESULTS: Women reported the use of 8 coping strategies (religious/spiritual, benefit finding, fatalism, optimism, fighting spirit, information seeking, denial, and self-distraction). Among Chinese American BCS, benefit finding was the most referenced coping strategy, whereas religious/spiritual coping was most frequently reported among Korean American and Mexican American BCS. Denial and self-distraction were the least cited strategies.CONCLUSIONS: Survivors draw upon new found inner strength to successfully integrate their cancer experience into their lives. Coping models must consider the diversity of cancer survivors and the variability in coping strategies among cultural ethnic minority BCS.

Abstract:Breast cancer (BC) is intricately linked with emotions, underscoring the importance of BC survivors adopting effective coping strategies. This study utilized qualitative research methods and semi-structured interviews to explore the evolving coping strategies of 15 Chinese BC survivors throughout their recovery journey. Through the process of coding and organizing the interview data, it was found that individuals frequently shifted from employing negative coping strategies to employing active coping strategies when faced with risk. The transformation approaches include from ineffective emotional venting to positive reappraisal; from focused on thought/rumination to avoidance; from putting into perspective to positive focusing; from other blame to positive refocusing; identifying and cleaning up irrational emotions; self-awareness growth. Furthermore, three coping strategies emerged: emotion-focused coping; problem-focused coping; and meaning-focused coping. Each coping strategy offers unique strengths and appropriate situations. The findings underscore the importance of fostering a positive outlook on risks among BC survivors and continuously enhancing their coping skills to navigate the challenges they encounter.

Abstract:Purpose To develop an in-depth understanding of the meaning of symptoms in the context of how women with stage I-III breast cancer in China coped with the effects of primary and adjuvant therapies for breast cancer. Method A qualitative descriptive approach was used. A purposive sample of women diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer were recruited from the "Be Resilient to Breast Cancer" study between November 2023 and March 2024. Data was collected from in person interviews using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The framework analysis method was used to generate codes and themes. Results A sample of 17 women with breast cancer agreed to participate. The average age was 50.1 years (SD=8.45), and the majority (65%) had stage III. The overarching theme was Confronting Physical and Psychological Symptoms . The four themes explaining the experience were Changed Identity, Uncertainty, Finding Meaning and Seeking Support and Solace. Changed Identity and Uncertainty reflected the challenges of coping with multiple symptoms from the treatment. The themes of Finding Meaning and Seeking Support and Solace captured how women adapted a positive perspective to cope with the experience. Conclusions This study contributed to the evidence of the integration of the symptom experience in coping with breast cancer treatment in the context of a collectivist Chinese culture. It enhanced the understanding of the physical and psychological symptom experience of curative intent breast cancer therapy and offered insight into how women from China cope in early survivorship.

Abstract:SUMMARY Haemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies against the influenza viruses A/Hong Kong/8/68 (H3N2) and B/Nederland/77/66 were determined in 420 paired sera from mothers and newborns (umbilical cord sera), sampled in 1970–1. A higher concentration of antibodies against influenza A virus was found more frequently in neonatal than in maternal sera. By contrast, low titres against influenza B virus were more frequently observed in neonatal than in maternal sera. Maternal age, duration of pregnancy, and birth-weight did not affect the results of the tests. It is suggested that the titre of the newborn against an epidemic influenza virus can be predicted from that of the mother. Furthermore, the maternal titre may be an indication of the susceptibility of the newborn infant to influenza infections.

Abstract:Abstract Background Breast cancer is a common tumor in China and has become a public health problem in modern society. Stress plays an important role in the occurrence and progression of cancer. At present, the current situation of stress on breast cancer survivors (BCSs) in China has not been fully understood. This study aims to explore the stress and coping strategies of Chinese BCSs, which provide suggestions to help BCSs reduce stress. Methods Sixty-three BCSs from the Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club in China were included in this study and were divided into eight focus groups. These were transcribed verbatim, coded using thematic analysis and analyzed using NVivo 11. Results Three themes were extracted from the data to address our research objectives: stress, coping strategies and expectations. The stress of BCSs included psychological stress, stress caused by physical pain, economic stress, stress caused by the change of life status, and stress caused by information overload; the coping strategies included self-strategies and help from others; from the perspective of the survivors, they put forward their expectations for both the society and themselves. Conclusions This study shows that BCSs face a variety of stress. In the face of stress, BCSs need comprehensive support, including social and family support to cope with stressors. The findings from this study provide evidence for improving the quality of life among BCSs.

Abstract:Objectives To explore the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by Chinese gynaecological oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy and discuss measures to address the existing gaps. Design Qualitative phenomenology. Semistructured in-depth interview. Colaizzi's method data analysis. Setting A tertiary general hospital. Participants 16 gynaecological oncology patients (mean age 51.7) having undergone ≥1 chemotherapy cycle were recruited by purposive sampling. Results Six themes were generated. The participants were under-informed about CAM concept and options. They were open to explore various modalities after chemotherapy as long as it could alleviate symptoms. The gynaecological patients with cancer sought information about CAM from diverse sources, with professional expertise being the most desirable way to seek information. They used CAM as a strategy to support continued chemotherapy and for symptom alleviation. Financial burden was not stressed but they had concerns about sustainability of some therapies. Their attitudes toward different CAM types varied. Some were sceptical about the efficacy. Conclusions The Chinese gynaecological oncology patients may be under-informed about CAM. They are open to use various CAM therapies for symptom relief and as a support strategy. However, their attitudes toward specific therapies may vary. Some may host scepticism about certain CAM modalities. The patients actively seek information on CAM and treatment resources but prefer professional expertise to other sources. Financial burden due to continued CAM use is inconclusive due to possible sampling bias. Sustainability of CAM therapies is a common concern because of limited resources and access. Education on CAM should be incorporated into the curriculum of healthcare professionals. Oncologists and nurses should educate gynaecological patients with cancer on the concept and options of CAM, preferably with information tailored to patient's individual needs. Health authorities should advocate provisions of diverse CAM services and develop the necessary technologies such as network of local care resources.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the intraoperative waiting period experience and needs response of primary caregivers of patients with breast cancer. Method: Using a purposive sampling method, 16 primary caregivers of patients with breast cancer admitted to the Department of Breast Surgery of Shanxi Bethune Hospital from January to May 2022 were selected as study subjects. Semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted using a qualitative research method. Results: Five themes were extracted from the levels of safety and security, information transfer, emotion management, psychological adjustment and role adaptation: safety first and intraoperative care, lack of information and misdirection, negative emotions and tired of coping, ineffective worry and overthinking, and role multiplicity and bearing alone, respectively. Conclusion: The intraoperative waiting period for primary caregivers of patients with breast cancer felt multidimensional and had less than optimal needs satisfaction. Healthcare professionals should use the existing needs as an entry point to give appropriate interventions to enhance the coping ability of caregivers of patients with breast cancer.

Abstract:Background Cancer threat is relevant to age, and the threat of a foreshortened life coupled with a lengthy treatment process negatively affects middle‐aged and older adults. Understanding the coping throughout the cancer experience in middle‐aged and older cancer survivors will help develop supportive care to promote their physiological and psychological coping effects. Objectives To explore the cancer coping experiences of middle‐aged adults aged 40–59 and older adults over 60. Design A descriptive phenomenological study was employed. Methods Face‐to‐face, in‐depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with 22 oncology patients in a tertiary university hospital aged 40 or above from August to October 2023. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis procedures. Results Five themes and 13 subthemes were formed through analysis: acceptance of cancer (considering cancer as chronic, believing in fate and attributing cancer to karma); having different information needs (desired to be truthfully informed, information‐seeking behaviour, information avoidance behaviour); getting families involved (developing dependent behaviours, feeling emotional support, family members suffering worse); striving to maintain positive psychological state (positive thinking, seeking peer support) and negative experience (undesirable, low self‐esteem). Conclusion Our study reveals that cancer survivors' attitudes towards having cancer have changed from a death sentence to a more positive perception of a chronic disease. Supportive programmes for developing coping strategies should consider the cultural traditions and religious beliefs, different information needs, involvement of family and promoting a positive psychological state while avoiding negative factors. Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to systematically integrate the experience of symptoms of breast cancer patients receiving endocrine therapy, analyze the patients' understanding and coping status of symptoms, and provide information for the development of targeted symptom management measures. Methods: We searched databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, MEDLINE (Ovid), Web of Science, EMBASE (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), and ProQuest from inception to September 25, 2023. Literature was screened and analyzed using Endnote software, evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool for Qualitative Research, and the results were integrated using JBI's Pooled Integration Methodology. Results: Three composite findings were derived from 10 studies: symptom distress during endocrine therapy; coping in symptom experience; and support needs. Conclusions: Emphasis should be placed on the symptomatic experience of breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy, and effective interventions should be developed to improve patients' medication compliance and quality of life. Finally, the long-term survival rate of patients is improved. Systematic review registration: CRD42023466073.

Abstract:Cancer affects patients as well as their spouses. Patients and their spouses use different strategies to cope with cancer and the associated burden. This study aimed to gain a deeper and more differentiated understanding of support systems for patients and their spouses. This was an exploratory qualitative study conducted in China. The study was based on 20 semistructured face-to-face interviews. Ten pancreatic cancer patients and their spouses were interviewed. The interviews took place at a tertiary hospital from June 2023 to December 2023. The data were analysed using thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke's methodology. This study was guided by the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Twenty participants of different ages (patients: range = 49–75 years; spouses: range = 47–73 years) participated. Patients with different cancer stages (e.g., potentially resectable, borderline resectable, locally advanced) and cancer types (initial diagnosis or relapse) participated in the study. Five themes emerged from the data, namely, denial and silence, fear and worry, struggle, coping strategies and cherishing the present. Active dyadic coping is conducive to promoting disease adaptation, and spouses seem to need more psychological support to improve their own well-being. Health care providers should pay attention to pancreatic cancer patients and their spouses in terms of five themes: denial and silence, fear and worry, struggle, coping strategies and cherishing the present. Future studies should use a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to explore dyadic coping in greater depth.

Abstract:Aim To explore women's experience and management of cancer‐related fatigue and psychological distress during treatment for gynaecological cancer. Design Qualitative descriptive study. Methods Face‐to‐face semistructured individual interviews were conducted with 23 women in mainland China undergoing treatment for gynaecological cancer between July and October 2023. Data were analysed using content analysis. Results Three categories were identified: overwhelming experience of cancer‐related fatigue, diverse experiences of psychological distress and strategies for managing cancer‐related fatigue and psychological distress. Participants reported physical exhaustion and emotional fatigue, disrupting their normal lives. Psychological distress included distress due to cancer treatment, psychological burden associated with social relationships, frustration with being ill and worries about disease progression and recurrence. Strategies for managing symptoms were mainly nonpharmacological, with some unable to find suitable methods. Conclusion This study found that participants had a complex experience of cancer‐related fatigue and psychological distress, influenced by social expectations regarding women's roles and treatment impacts on reproductive health and femininity. These findings underscore the need for comprehensive interventions involving family members or fellow patients to reduce both symptoms. Implications for Patient Care Nurses should focus on addressing cancer‐related fatigue and psychological distress in women receiving treatment for gynaecological cancer, particularly in adolescents and young adults. It is essential to provide comprehensive care to improve their physical and psychological well‐being. Impact This study explored how women with gynaecological cancer experience and manage cancer‐related fatigue and psychological distress. The findings highlight the need for holistic care that addresses physical and psychological symptoms. Nurses should consider the impact of reproductive health and femininity on symptom experiences and management. Abstract:Background: The use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) by breast cancer patients is growing. Few studies have examined the complexity of breast cancer survivors' attitudes, lived experiences, barriers, and perceptions in using TCM as part of their treatment journey. This article examines breast cancer survivors' experiences, perceptions of, and benefits (or not) in using TCM. Methods: Qualitative research, using semi-structured interviews, was the chosen methodology. Results: Participants used TCM as a form of self-help and as a complement, not an alternative, to standard care. Overall, 100% of the participants used acupuncture, 62% used Chinese herbal medicine, 23% used Qigong, and 23% used Chinese dietary therapy. Participants reported perceived outcomes and health benefits from TCM usage ranging from increased coping mechanisms, relieving stress and side-effects of standard treatment, the desire to be pro-active in the treatment journey, and to have a locus of control. Some cited the need to have "time-out" and the therapeutic relationship with the practitioner as being important. Conclusion: There is a clear need to understand breast cancer survivors' needs for physical and psychological support as they aim to regain control over their life through their experience of illness. More studies are needed to measure and evaluate these outcomes and to help identify breast cancer survivors' healthcare seeking behaviours, during and after the acute treatment stage that addresses their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. These results aim to inform future research design and evaluate and develop support services that are patient-centred and focus on whole health outcomes, shared decision-making, and quality of life.
Coping self-efficacy, perceived helpfulness of coping, and distress: a longitudinal investigation of breast and gynecologic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

Abstract:We examined changes in coping self-efficacy (CSE) pre- and post-chemotherapy and whether these changes predicted depressive symptoms and perceived stress after chemotherapy among women breast and gynecological cancers. We further tested whether perceived helpfulness of coping strategies used during chemotherapy influenced these effects. In a longitudinal design, participants ( n = 79) provided data on CSE, depressive symptoms, and perceived stress pre-chemotherapy, post-chemotherapy (~ 4 months later), and at 8 and 12-month follow-up. During chemotherapy, participants completed a one-week daily diary on use and helpfulness of coping strategies in managing side effects. CSE decreased during chemotherapy, returning to baseline levels at follow-up. Higher problem-focused CSE pre- and post-chemotherapy predicted increases in distress among women who appraised their coping strategies as low or average in helpfulness during chemotherapy; problem-focused CSE was unrelated to changes in distress at high levels of perceived helpfulness. Increases in coping self-efficacy without concomitant helpful coping strategies may be markers for poor adjustment post-chemotherapy and identify patients who could benefit from psychosocial services. Combined education and skills-based interventions to align self-efficacy beliefs with coping strategies may reduce psychological burden.

Supporting her as the situation changes: A qualitative study of spousal support strategies for patients with breast cancer in China

Abstract:Objective: Spouses who are the major source of social support for married breast cancer patients sometimes do not know how to support the patient effectively. This study aimed to investigate the experiences and strategies of spouses identified as supportive for patients throughout the disease. Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews was conducted with 22 husbands of Chinese women with breast cancer, who had effectively supported their wives. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. Results: Three themes emerged from the data: (a) following the diagnosis, the spouse focused on "problem solving under stress" by preparing the patient for the physician's disclosure of the diagnosis, helping her to cope with the shock, and aiding her in dealing with the treatment recommendations; (b) during treatment, the spouse focused on "functional compensation" to offset the patient's reduced self-care and family care abilities; and (c) following treatment, the spouse focused on "role return" by adapting to changes in the patient and assisting her return to the family and society. Conclusion: Chinese spouses of women with breast cancer exhibited support strategies that varied with disease progress. Healthcare providers should aid spouses in providing support according to the changing needs of patients with breast cancer.

Abstract:Purpose: Among Chinese breast cancer survivors, treatment decision-making is different than that in western countries. Among Chinese women, family often plays an important role during the treatment period, and Chinese-specific cultural factors have negative influences on their psychological conditions. The aim of the present study was to explore the treatment decision making, family influences, and cultural influences of Chinese breast cancer survivors. Methods: This study used an expressive writing method to explore the experiences of breast cancer survivors who were diagnosed with stage 0 to III cancer. Participants were instructed to write 30 min per week over a period of 3 weeks. All writings were analyzed using a qualitative method. Results: Three themes were identified: treatment decision making, family influences, and cultural influences. Treatment decision-making included the subthemes of preference for mastectomy, passive involvement, and active involvement. Family influences included the subthemes of financial burden, family expectations, and family support. Cultural influences included the subthemes of fatalism, barriers to expressing emotions, and stigma related to cancer. Conclusions: Information on breast cancer treatment and survivorship should be provided to patients through multiple methods to improve their knowledge of breast cancer. Family support should be maintained to ensure patients' confidence and courage during the treatment period. Necessary and appropriate psychological interventions that consider cultural influences should be administered.

Abstract:Purpose s: Self-perceived burden can take a toll on the physical and psychological well-being of cancer couples and prevent them from achieving favorable outcomes. There is limited qualitative research synthesizing the cognition and coping with self-perceived burden among Chinese colorectal cancer patients and their caregivers. Therefore, this study examined perceptions of self-perceived burden and coping strategies from the perspectives of colorectal cancer patients, their spousal caregivers and nursing staff. Methods A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews was implemented from May 15 to July 14, 2023. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results This study summarized the cognition and coping strategies regarding self-perceived burden through three themes. Conclusions The presence of self-perceived burden hinders good outcomes for colorectal cancer couples. It is necessary to help colorectal cancer couples cope with self-perceived burden together. Nursing staff need to be a bridge of communication and exchange for colorectal cancer couples, providing them with effective and reliable information and support, thus helping colorectal cancer patients and their spousal caregivers achieve true inner peace and better outcomes.
Coping with family function changes: A qualitative study of couples facing advanced lung cancer

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of couples with advanced lung cancer in coping with changes in their family functioning. Methods: This study included patients with advanced lung disease and their spouses who were hospitalized in a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China. Data were collected through interviews that focused on three key areas: (1) patient coping, (2) spousal coping, and (3) dyadic coping. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted in Chinese and analyzed using Braun-Clarke thematic analysis. Results: A total of 15 couples participated in the study (12 male and 3 female patients). The average age of the patients was 63.73 years, and that of their partners was 63.20 years. Marriage duration ranged from 25 to 53 years. Three distinct themes emerged from the data: individual patient coping was expressed in four areas: struggle, acceptance of reality, cherishing the present and regaining hope, and rebuilding family life; spousal coping was expressed in three areas: acceptance and understanding of the patient, providing active support, and adjusting roles and sharing of family responsibilities; and dyadic coping was expressed in three areas: cognitive consistency of changes in family functioning, stress communication, and family adjustment and adaptation based on shared cognition. A relationship diagram of patients with advanced lung cancer and their spouses in coping with post-cancer changes in family functioning was constructed. Conclusions: Post-cancer coping with changes in family functioning in couples with advanced lung cancer is a continuous developmental and gradual evolutionary process, and there is a close relationship between the two that influences each other. Early assistance for couples to form consistent cognition and communicate effectively with the stress caused by the disease can help improve the family functioning of both partners and, in turn, improve the quality of life of patients. Therefore, it is recommended that clinicians conduct family- or couple-centered intervention studies aimed at improving the post-cancer quality of life of patients with advanced lung cancer.
A Qualitative Exploration of the Unmet Psychosocial Rehabilitation Needs of Cancer Survivors in China

Abstract:Objective: This study explores the unmet psychosocial rehabilitation needs of cancer survivors.Methods: Sixty-eight cancer survivors from the Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club in China participated in one of the eight focus groups. These were transcribed verbatim, coded using thematic analysis and analysed using NVivo 10.Results: Five main themes were identified: the need for (1) better information: Chinese cancer survivors find it difficult to sort and evaluate the overwhelming mass of information with which they are confronted; (2) psychological support: survivors fear cancer relapse and neighbours' discrimination against them; support from other cancer survivors can relieve the stress; (3) support for survivors' families: like the survivors, family members are under great hut usually unacknowledged pressure; (4) improved health and medical services: community health service centres provide little medical, informational or psychological support for cancer survivors, who seek and expect more communication with doctors; and (5) assistance with the financial burden: costs of treatment and lack of adequate medical insurance cause substantial financial pressure for survivors.Conclusions: This study shows that, in addition to their illness, Chinese cancer survivors experience a range of stresses related to their financial circumstances, lack of reliable and summarised information, poor access to support and services (including for their families) and discrimination. Support from families seems to improve survivors' ability to cope. Cancer survivors (and their families) need an integrated package of support from their families, doctors and other service providers, hospitals and communities.
