Abstract:Summary Background Sarcopenia is a continuous process defined as a decline in both muscle mass and strength, which is a common phenomenon among elders and has been linked to multiple adverse clinical consequences. Varieties of factors contribute to the occurrence of sarcopenia. In the present study, we aim to observe the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly women of China, and examine the effects of aging on the body composition change in China older women. Methods 177 participants included 35.6% young women and 44.4% elderly women took part in this study between February 2015 and August 2015. All volunteers took dual energy X-ray absorptiometry tests for body composition assessment and physical-performance tests for physical function assessment. Results Elderly women had greater total fat mass (25.2 ± 6.9 vs 22.5 ± 5.9, P = 0.008) and percentage fat mass (45.1 ± 7.3 vs 41.7 ± 5.5, P 2 did not show statistical significance between young and older women. In spite of an equal muscle mass between two groups, the muscle strength (hand-grip strength, HGS) and physical function decline were more rapidly developed in elderly women, compared with their young counterparts. Conclusion Our findings suggested that both aging and menopause contributes to the decline of muscle strength and physical function rather primarily than the loss of muscle mass in the process of sarcopenia in Chinese older women. Hand-grip strength criteria is more sensitive to diagnose sarcopenia in elderly women of China.
A Combination of Serum Biomarkers in Elderly Patients with Sarcopenia: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study

Abstract:Background. The pathogenesis of sarcopenia in the elderly has not yet been fully understood. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sarcopenia and several serum biomarkers in elderly population. Methods. It was an observational cross‐sectional study of data collected from 70 patients. According to the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS), subjects were divided into the sarcopenia group and nonsarcopenic group. We compared age, body mass index (BMI), biochemical indexes, smoking status, underlying disease, muscle mass, handgrip strength (HS), gait speed (GS), skinfold thickness, muscle thickness, and IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, and TNF-α levels between these groups. Results. Of the 70 subjects, 35 patients were diagnosed with sarcopenia. The number of men was higher than that of women in both groups. The patients with sarcopenia were older and had lower BMI and muscle thickness but higher SARC-F questionnaire scores. However, the difference in smoking status and skinfold thickness between these two groups were not statistically significant. Higher IL-6, IL-17A, and TNF-α levels were observed in participants with sarcopenia P < 0.05 . Patients with sarcopenia had a lower IL-10 level. Positive associations were present between the severity of sarcopenia and IL-6, IL-17A, and TNF-α levels, while there was an inverse correlation between the presence of sarcopenia and IL-10 level. Conclusions. Our research found that in sarcopenic elderly subjects, the serum levels of several biomarkers, such as IL-6, IL-17A, and TNF-α, were higher than those in nonsarcopenic elderly persons. Further studies are needed to explore the possible molecular mechanisms and discover new therapeutic targets.
Determinants of Sarcopenia in Elderly Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

Abstract:Introduction: This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting the development of sarcopenias in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), in order to provide future clinical reference and guidance in preventing the occurrence of sarcopenias in patients with CKD. Methods: We included 116 CKD patients admitted to affiliated Hospital of Hebei University for retrospective analysis between September 2019 and March 2022. Fifty-one CKD patients with sarcopenias were selected as the observation group (OG) and 65 CKD patients without sarcopenias were considered as the control group (CG). Clinical baseline data such as age and sex were recorded, venous blood was collected for routine examination, and a multi-frequency body composition analyzer was applied to measure patients' body composition. Grip strength, middle arm circumstances (MAC) and triceps skin-fold thickness (TSF) were also measured. Then, patients' sleep quality, nutritional status and negative psychological status were assessed by using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Malnutrition inflammation score (MIS), and Self-rating Anxiety/Depression Scale (SAS/SDS), respectively. Differences in test results were compared inter-group, and the factors affecting the occurrence of sarcopenias in CKD patients were analyzed by multiple Logistic regression. Results: OG patients were older than CG patients, with a higher number of female patients. Their BMI, bone mass, MAC, serum creatinine (Scr), uric acid (UA) and triglyceride (TG) were lower (P < .05). According to multiple Logistic regression analysis, age, as well as PSQI, MIS, SAS, and SDS scores were the risk factors for sarcopenias in CKD, while BMI, bone mass, MAC, Scr, UA and TG were protective factors (P < .05). Conclusion: Age, poor sleep quality, poor nutritional status and negative emotions are independent risk factors for sarcopenias in CKD patients, while BMI, bone mass, MAC, UA, TG, and Scr are independent protective factors. Abstract:A study of serum cholesterol and lipoproteins covering periods of 28 years in a male physician and 17 years in a female research worker showed relative constancy for the cholesterol levels and greater variability for the lipoproteins. Cholesterol was reduced sharply and temporarily just after each influenzal infection. In the male, the level of cholesterol was slightly above 300 mg/100 ml for more than 13 years. An extremely low cholesterol and high carbohydrate diet proved unacceptable. A more liberal, relatively low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol, and high polyunsaturated fatty acid diet with about 30% of the calories from fat, maintained the cholesterol level between 230 and 270 mg and has been followed with relish for a number of years. A myocardial infarction occurred 27 years after the study began. Clofibrate since then has reduced the cholesterol level further.The female subject is in good health and maintains cholesterol levels slightly below 300 mg on a usual American diet. She is 10 years younger than the male. Her —S 40–70 lipoproteins have usually been well below the male subject's. Weight gain and lack of exercise seemed regularly to increase both levels.The data are presented because we believe them to be accurate; their interpretation is for the reader. We hope he must wait for some time for the outcome of the study.
The prevalence of sarcopenia and risk factors in the older adult in China: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Understanding the epidemiological information of a certain disease is the first step in related prevention and control work. This article aims to understand the prevalence and associated risk factors of sarcopenia among the older adult (≥60 years old) in China and to provide an evidence-based basis for early identification, management, and prevention of sarcopenia patients. Methods: We searched seven databases: CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from the establishment of the database until January 31, 2024. The Quality evaluation criteria of cross-sectional studies recommended by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) were used for literature quality evaluation. Stata 18.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: We finally included 45 studies, involving a total of 37,571 cases. After statistical analysis, we found that the prevalence of sarcopenia among the older adult in China was 20.7% [95% CI (18.3, 23.0%)]. The results of subgroup analysis suggest that: ① According to gender, the prevalence rate of sarcopenia in women (21.6%) is higher than that in men (19.2%); ② According to age, the prevalence rate of older adult people aged ≥80 (45.4%) was the highest, followed by 70-79 (27.2%) and 60-69 (15.7%). ③ According to region, the prevalence rate of the older adult in the south (21.7%) is higher than that in the north (19.0%); ④ According to the time of publication, the prevalence of sarcopenia among the older adult in China has increased (from 19.2% in 2014-2018 to 21.4% in 2019-2024); ⑤ According to the diagnostic criteria, the detection rate of AWGS (2019) is higher than that of AWGS (2014) (24.5% vs. 19.3%). Finally, aging, low BMI, low leg circumference, smoking, depression, osteoporosis, malnutrition and malnutrition risk are all risk factors for sarcopenia among the older adult in China. Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia in the older adult in China was higher (20.7%), which should be paid attention to by relevant health authorities. In addition, aging, low BMI, low calf circumference, smoking, depression, osteoporosis, malnutrition and malnutrition risk are risk factors for the development of sarcopenia in the older adult in China. For these high-risk populations, early identification, prevention, and intervention can be carried out to delay the occurrence and progression of sarcopenia.
Effects of sarcopenia on changes in prevalence of patients with depressive mood during hospitalization in geriatric rehabilitation

Abstract:Background: The effect of sarcopenia on depressive mood during geriatric rehabilitation remains unclear. This study investigated the potential influence of sarcopenia on depressive mood among geriatric patients in a rehabilitation setting. Methods: This observational cohort study enrolled 204 patients aged ≥65 years (mean: 78.8±7.6 years, 45.1% women) admitted to a rehabilitation unit between April 2020 and July 2021. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia: 2019 Consensus Update on Sarcopenia Diagnosis and Treatment (AWGS2019) criteria, which include low handgrip strength and muscle mass. Depressive mood was defined as a 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale score of ≥6 points. We applied logistic regression models to examine the influence of sarcopenia on depressive mood at discharge. Results: We observed sarcopenia in 58.3% of patients. The logistic regression model showed that sarcopenia negatively influenced depressive mood at discharge (odds ratio, 5.460; 95% confidence interval, 2.344-13.415). Of the 68 patients without depressive mood at admission, those with sarcopenia (n=31) had a significantly higher incidence of depressive mood at discharge compared with patients without sarcopenia (n=37) (41.9% vs. 16.2%, p=0.037). Conclusion: Sarcopenia at admission negatively affected depressive mood at discharge from geriatric rehabilitation. Thus, early and routine assessment of sarcopenia is vital for patients undergoing geriatric rehabilitation.
Prevalence and Prognostic Implications of Sarcopenia in Older Patients with Coronary Heart Disease.

Abstract:Background Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder that is associated with an increased likelihood of adverse outcomes, including falls, fractures, physical disability, and mortality. However, there have been few systematic studies of the prevalence and prognostic values of sarcopenia in older patients with coronary heart disease（CHD）. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in hospitalized older patients with CHD, and to prospectively evaluate the effect of sarcopenia on the short-term prognosis of these patients. Methods Patients aged ≥ 65 years, with the diagnosis of CHD from Peking Union Medical College Hospital between December 2017 and November 2018, were included. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to consensus of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia in 2014. Follow-up items included unscheduled return visits, occurrence of major adverse cardiac and cerebral events（MACCE）, and all-cause mortality. The MACCE-free survival curve of sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic older patients with CHD was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox regression analysis was used to analyze the association between sarcopenia and an unscheduled return visits, MACCE, and all-cause mortality. Results A total of 345 older patients with CHD were enrolled in the study, with a median age of 74 years. Among the patients, 78（22.6%） were diagnosed with sarcopenia. During the follow-up time, there were significantly more unscheduled return visits in sarcopenic patients than in non-sarcopenic patients（34.2% vs. 21.8%, χ~2 = 4.418, P = 0.036）, while there was no significant difference in the occurrence of MACCE（χ~2 = 2.869, P = 0.09） or all-cause mortality（χ~2 = 1.673, P = 0.196） between these patient groups. The Kaplan-Meier curve showed that the MACCE-free survival time of sarcopenic patients was significantly shorter than that in non-sarcopenic patients（χ~2 = 4.102, P = 0.043）. After adjusting for sex, age, and the Charlson comorbidity index, sarcopenia was not an independent risk factor of unscheduled return visits（HR = 1.002, 95% CI: 0.556–1.807）. However, the complication of anxiety and depression was an independent risk factor（HR = 1.876, 95% CI: 1.012–3.477, P = 0.046） for unscheduled return visits in older patients with CHD. Conclusions There is a high prevalence of sarcopenia among hospitalized older adults with CHD. A shorter MACCE-free survival time and more unscheduled return visits are found in sarcopenic older patients with CHD. Clinicians should pay more attention to the functional status of older patients with CHD, as well as identification and management of geriatric syndromes.
Associated Factors of Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:(1) Background: To review the associated factors of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults. (2) Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and four Chinese electronic databases were searched for observational studies that reported the associated factors of sarcopenia from inception to August 2021. Two researchers independently selected the literature, evaluated their quality, and extracted relevant data. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated for each associated factors of sarcopenia using random-effects/fixed-effects models. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plot and the Eggers test. We performed statistical analysis using Stata 15.0 software. (3) Results: A total of 68 studies comprising 98,502 cases were included. Sociodemographic associated factors of sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults included age (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.10–1.13), marital status (singled, divorced, or widowed) (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.08–2.28), disability for activities of daily living (ADL) (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.15–1.92), and underweight (OR = 3.78, 95% CI: 2.55–5.60). Behavioral associated factors included smoking (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.10–1.21), physical inactivity (OR = 1.73, 95% CI: 1.48–2.01), malnutrition/malnutrition risk (OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 2.40–3.72), long (OR = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.37–3.86) and short (OR = 3.32, 95% CI: 1.86–5.93) sleeping time, and living alone (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.00–2.40). Disease-related associated factors included diabetes (OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.18–1.66), cognitive impairment (OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.05–2.51), heart diseases (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.00–1.30), respiratory diseases (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.09–1.36), osteopenia/osteoporosis (OR = 2.73, 95% CI: 1.63–4.57), osteoarthritis (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.23–1.44), depression (OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.17–1.83), falls (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.14–1.44), anorexia (OR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.14–1.96), and anemia (OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.06–1.82). However, it remained unknown whether gender (female: OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 0.80–1.51; male: OR = 1.50, 95% CI: 0.96–2.34), overweight/obesity (OR = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.17–0.44), drinking (OR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.84–1.01), hypertension (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.84–1.14), hyperlipidemia (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.89–1.47), stroke (OR = 1.70, 95% CI: 0.69–4.17), cancer (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.85–0.92), pain (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.98–1.20), liver disease (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.85–0.91), and kidney disease (OR = 2.52, 95% CI: 0.19–33.30) were associated with sarcopenia. (4) Conclusions: There are many sociodemographic, behavioral, and disease-related associated factors of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults. Our view provides evidence for the early identification of high-risk individuals and the development of relevant interventions to prevent sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract:Sarcopenia has become a heavy disease burden among the elderly. Lipid metabolism was reported to be involved in many degenerative diseases. This study aims to investigate the association between dysregulated lipid metabolism and sarcopenia in geriatric inpatients. This cross-sectional study included 303 patients aged ≥ 60, of which 151 were diagnosed with sarcopenia. The level of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), homocysteine (HCY), BMI, and fat percentage, were compared between sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia patients. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to estimate the association between sarcopenia and the level of lipid metabolism. To determine risk factors related to sarcopenia, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was carried out. Risk prediction models were constructed based on all possible data through principal component analysis (PCA), Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGboost). We observed rising prevalence of sarcopenia with increasing age, decreasing BMI, and fat percentage ( p < 0.001, Cochran Armitage test). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed sarcopenia's risk factors, including older age, male sex, lower levels of BMI, TC, and TG, and higher levels of LDL and HCY ( p < 0.05). The sarcopenia risk prediction model showed the risk prediction value of sarcopenia, with the highest area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.775. Our study provided thorough insight into the risk factors associated with sarcopenia. It demonstrated that an increase in lipid metabolism-related parameters (BMI, TG, TC), within normal reference ranges, may be protective against sarcopenia. The present study can illuminate the direction and significance of lipid metabolism-related factors in preventing sarcopenia.

Abstract:Sarcopenia a recognised geriatric syndrome. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia among older Chinese adults and to identify any associated factors for possible sarcopenia according to the updated diagnostic criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019). We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The main outcome of this study was possible sarcopenia. Handgrip strength was measured via a dynamometer. The muscle mass was estimated by anthropometric measures. Physical performance was measured by 5-time chair stand test and gait speed test. A multivariate logistic regression model with stepwise method was employed to identify factors associated with possible sarcopenia. A total of 6172 participants aged 60–94 years were included. The prevalence of possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia was 38.5%, 18.6%, and 8.0%, respectively. Age, rural area, falls, higher C-reactive protein (CRP), and chronic diseases (including hypertension, chronic lung diseases, heart disease, psychiatric disease and arthritis) were associated with a higher risk of possible sarcopenia. Conversely, alcohol consumption, higher gait speed and high levels of hemoglobin were associated with decreased risk of possible sarcopenia. However, the associations between possible sarcopenia with alcohol consumption, heart disease, psychiatric disease and hemoglobin were not significant after Bonferroni correction. Our study reported a relatively high prevalence of sarcopenia among older Chinese population, and identified a range of factors associated with sarcopenia. We also found rural elders are more vulnerable to sarcopenia than urban elders. Additionally, we discovered systemic inflammation might be one of the contributing factors between sarcopenia and related comorbidities. We believe the findings of this study would help to identify individuals at high risk of sarcopenia early and therefore implement the prevention and treatment strategies to reduce the disease burden in China.

Abstract:Science Progress, Volume 107, Issue 3, July-September 2024. Objective:Employing body composition analysis, this study aims to examine the influencing factors and conduct predictive analysis regarding sarcopenia incidence in the middle-aged and elderly population in China.Methods:This study recruited inpatients from the General Medicine Department of Tongji Medical College Affiliated Union Hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, as the subjects for a single-center retrospective study. Diagnosis was conducted according to the 2019 criteria from the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Binary logistic regression analysis was utilized to identify factors influencing sarcopenia, and predictive modeling for sarcopenia occurrence was performed based on the area under the ROC curve (AUC).Results:This study comprised 1258 hospitalized patients, of whom 340 were diagnosed with sarcopenia and 918 were not, resulting in a prevalence of 27%. The baseline characteristics showed statistically significant differences between the two groups. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that low protein, low total body water, low minerals, low basal metabolic rate, and age were risk factors for sarcopenia (OR > 1, P < 0.05). Conversely, being male, having a higher BMI, greater fat-free mass index, and a higher InBody score were identified as protective factors against sarcopenia (OR < 1, P < 0.05). The AUC values for predicting sarcopenia occurrence based on low protein, low total body water, low minerals, low basal metabolic rate, and age were 0.871, 0.846, 0.757, 0.645, and 0.649, respectively, indicating their significance as predictive indicators. Combining these five indicators into a new predictive model for sarcopenia yielded an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.932, demonstrating excellent sensitivity and specificity concurrently.Conclusion:The results of body composition analysis indicate that sarcopenia occurrence in the middle-aged and elderly population in China is associated with factors such as low protein, low total body water, low minerals, low basal metabolic rate, age, gender, BMI, fat-free mass index, and InBody score. The combination of specific body composition indicators facilitates the effective prediction of sarcopenia. Clinical practitioners should proactively identify the risk factors influencing sarcopenia, accurately predict.

In the cross‐sectional analysis, we estimated the trend in the weighted prevalence of sarcopenia from 2011 to 2015 and examined the associated risk factors for sarcopenia severity in 2011. In the longitudinal analysis, we assessed the longitudinal associations between sarcopenia and 14 chronic conditions and mortality during a 9‐year follow‐up. Results The weighted prevalence of sarcopenia remained consistently high in the overall population from 2011 (15.9%, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 15.1, 16.6) to 2015 (15.0%, 95% CI: 14.3, 15.6; p for trend = 0.075). A range of risk factors were independently associated with the severity of sarcopenia, including older age, female sex, lower socioeconomic status, smoking status, malnutrition, and several chronic conditions. Possible sarcopenic and sarcopenic individuals had higher odds of several chronic conditions (i.e., heart disease, chronic lung disease, and memory‐related disease) and increased risks of mortality (possible sarcopenia: odds ratios (OR): 1.66, 95% CI: 1.37, 2.00; sarcopenia: OR: 1.69, 95% CI: 1.36, 2.11) in 9 years of follow‐up. Conclusions The prevalence of sarcopenia remained consistently high in the investigated population. Various risk factors were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of sarcopenia. Sarcopenic individuals had higher odds of several chronic conditions and increased risks of mortality, highlighting that the urgent need for dedicated efforts to improve the management of sarcopenic patients.

Abstract:Background Sarcopenia is common in older adults worldwide, but its prevalence varies widely owing to differences in diagnostic criteria, population sampled, and care setting. We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia in patients aged 65 and above admitted to a post-acute hospital in Singapore. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 400 patients recruited from a community hospital in Singapore. Data including socio-demographics, physical activity, nutritional status, cognition, clinical and functional status, as well as anthropometric measurements were collected. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria [AWGS2019]. Results Of the 383 patients with complete datasets, overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 54% while prevalence of severe sarcopenia was 38.9%. Participants with increased age, male gender and a low physical activity level were more likely to be sarcopenic, while those with higher hip circumference and higher BMI of ≥27.5m/kg2 were less likely to be sarcopenic. Other than the above-mentioned variables, cognitive impairment was also associated with severe sarcopenia. Conclusions More than 1 in 2 older adults admitted to a post-acute hospital in Singapore are sarcopenic. There is an urgent need to address this important clinical syndrome burden and to identify patients at risk of sarcopenia in post-acute settings in Singapore for early intervention.

Abstract:This article identifies factors that influence the choice between joining an HMO and remaining with the traditional fee-for-service system among aged Medicare beneficiaries in three communities. Sources of marketing information were found to be strongly and positively related to the decision to join the HMO. Among beneficiaries who had to switch providers to join, persons who had a prior usual source of care and those who were satisfied with the amount of paperwork required to use that source of care were less likely to enroll in the HMO. Persons who did not have to switch providers to join the HMO were more likely to enroll in the prepaid program if they were satisfied with the amount of paperwork involved in using the HMO prior to the demonstration. Differences among the three communities suggest that the barrier to HMO enrollment presented by having a prior source of care who is not affiliated with the HMO may attenuate as the number of competing HMOs in the community increases, making the medical care environment more competitive. In the community with the most HMOs, persons who already had supplemental insurance were less likely to enroll than those who did not. None of the six HMOs studied experienced adverse selection, based on pre-enrollment health status.

Abstract:With the advent of population aging, aging-related diseases have become a challenge for governments worldwide. Sarcopenia has defined as a clinical syndrome associated with age-related loss such as skeletal muscle mass, strength, function, and physical performance. It is commonly seen in elderly patients with chronic diseases. Changes in lean mass are common critical determinants in the pathophysiology and progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Sarcopenia may be one of the most important causes of poor physical function and decreased cardiopulmonary function in elderly patients with CVDs. Sarcopenia may induce CVDs through common pathogenic pathways such as malnutrition, physical inactivity, insulin resistance, inflammation; these mechanisms interact. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and CVDs in the elderly. Further research is urgently needed to understand better the relationship, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and mechanisms of sarcopenia and CVDs, which may shed light on potential interventions to improve clinical outcomes and provide greater insight into the disorders above.

Abstract:The relationship between possible sarcopenia and mortality remains ambiguous within Asian populations. To clarify this, we investigated the association in older adults residing in Chinese communities. Utilizing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, this population-based cohort study included individuals aged ≥ 60 years, followed from 2011 to 2012 through 2020. Possible sarcopenia was defined in accordance with the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia 2019 criteria, and Cox proportional hazards regression was used to analyze its impact on mortality, while exploratory analyses were conducted to investigate the associations of possible sarcopenia with chronic diseases, functional independence, and hospitalization frequency. The study encompassed 5,160 participants (median age: 66 years), nearly half of whom (48.8%) were identified with possible sarcopenia. Over a 9-year follow-up period, there were 1216 recorded deaths. Analysis indicated that individuals with possible sarcopenia faced a significantly elevated mortality risk compared to their counterparts (HR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.58–2.03; P < 0.001). Further, subgroup analyses confirmed a strong association between possible sarcopenia and all-cause mortality across various subgroups, including those related to sex, obesity status, and living environment. Additionally, exploratory analyses revealed that possible sarcopenia was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of heart disease (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.03–1.34, P = 0.014) and stroke (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.19–1.68, P < 0.001), as well as reduced functional independence (β = -0.17, 95% CI: -0.24–-0.10, P < 0.001). Possible sarcopenia was also associated with a higher frequency of hospitalizations at baseline (Exp(β) = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.25–1.81, P < 0.001), although this association was no longer significant during the follow-up period. In conclusion, in Chinese community-dwelling older adults, possible sarcopenia was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, several chronic diseases, and functional dependence. Thus, alleviating or preventing possible sarcopenia may improve health outcomes and extend the lifespan of these individuals.

THE I3A FRAMEWORK – ENHANCING OFF-GRID PHOTOVOLTAIC ENERGY SERVICE DELIVERY IN INDONESIA

Abstract:This paper describes an interdisciplinary research project to investigate the sustainability of off-grid Photovoltaic Energy Service (PVES) delivery in Indonesia. The paper describes results from the preliminary fieldwork undertaken in late 2002 and early 2003, more substantive fieldwork was carried out in 2005. The general objective of this research project is to understand how PVES can contribute to improving the life of rural Indonesian communities having no access to the electricity grid. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach that combines social and engineering perspectives to address sustainability issues. The I3A (Implementation, Accessibility, Availability, Acceptability) Sustainable PVES Delivery framework was developed to assess sustainability and was used to assess three off-grid PVES case studies in Lampung, West Java and Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) provinces. The overall objectives of the I3A framework are to acknowledge the interests of stakeholders, maximize equity, assure PVES continuity and institutionalize PVES by utilizing and enhancing pre-existing community resources to leave host communities with the capacity to meet evolving needs. A key conclusion is that, to be sustainable and equitable, off-grid PVES projects should be implemented in an institutional framework that provides sound project management and addresses PVES accessibility (financial, institutional and technological), availability (technical quality and continuity) and acceptability (social and ecological).

Abstract:Sarcopenia is an age‐related disease and is often accompanied by other diseases. Now, many studies have shown that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) may raise the incidence rate of sarcopenia. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta‐analysis to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with CVDs compared with the general population, defined as relatively healthy non‐hospitalized subjects. The databases of PubMed, Embase, Medline and Web of Science were searched for eligible studies published up to 12 November 2022. Two assessment tools were used to evaluate study quality and the risk of bias. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA 14.0 and R Version 4.1.2. Thirty‐eight out of the 89 629 articles retrieved were included in our review. The prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 10.1% to 68.9% in patients with CVDs, and the pooled prevalence was 35% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 28–42%). The pooled prevalence of sarcopenia was 32% (95% CI: 23–41%) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), 61% (95% CI: 49–72%) in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), 43% (95% CI: 2–85%) in patients with coronary artery disease, 30% (95% CI: 25–35%) in patients with cardiac arrhythmia (CA), 35% (95% CI: 10–59%) in patients with congenital heart disease and 12% (95% CI: 7–17%) in patients with unclassed CVDs. However, in the general population, the prevalence of sarcopenia varied from 2.9% to 28.6% and the pooled prevalence was 13% (95% CI: 9–17%), suggesting that the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with CVDs was about twice compared with the general population. The prevalence of sarcopenia was significantly higher only in patients with ADHF, CHF and CA compared with the general population. There is a positive correlation between CVDs and sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia is higher in patients with CVDs than that in the general population. With global aging, sarcopenia has brought a heavy burden to individuals and society. Therefore, it is important to identify the populations with high‐risk or probable sarcopenia in order to do an early intervention, such as exercise, to counteract or slow down the progress of sarcopenia.

Abstract:In this paper we simulate 1D quench propagation in superconducting magnets using cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) by a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spectral element method (SEM) and explicit Runge-Kutta time integration. The supercritical helium flow is considered in the modeling of quench propagation in CICC, which can be expressed by the Euler equations with additional friction and coupled heat transfer between helium and conductor and conduit. Roe's approximate Riemann solver for real gas/fluid is used to compute numerical flux and nonreflecting boundary condition is introduced in the algorithm. The method used here is highly parallelizable. Some numerical results are given and compared with those obtained by another simulation method and experimental data.
