Abstract:Abstract We study a method for mass-selective removal of ions from a Paul trap by parametric excitation. This can be achieved by applying an oscillating electric quadrupole field at twice the secular frequency $$\omega _{\text {sec}}$$ ω sec using pairs of opposing electrodes. While excitation near the resonance with the secular frequency $$\omega _{\text {sec}}$$ ω sec only leads to a linear increase of the amplitude with excitation duration, parametric excitation near $$2\, \omega _{\text {sec}}$$ 2 ω sec results in an exponential increase of the amplitude. This enables efficient removal of ions from the trap with modest excitation voltages and narrow bandwidth, therefore, substantially reducing the disturbance of ions with other charge-to-mass ratios. We numerically study and compare the mass selectivity of the two methods. In addition, we experimentally show that the barium isotopes with 136 and 137 nucleons can be removed from small ion crystals and ejected out of the trap while keeping $$^{138}\text {Ba}^{+}$$ 138 Ba + ions Doppler cooled, corresponding to a mass selectivity of better than $$\Delta m / m = 1/138$$ Δ m / m = 1 / 138 . This method can be widely applied to ion trapping experiments without major modifications since it only requires modulating the potential of the ion trap.

Abstract:Trapping molecular ions that have been sympathetically cooled with laser-cooled atomic ions is a useful platform for exploring cold ion chemistry. We designed and characterized a new experimental apparatus for probing chemical reaction dynamics between molecular cations and neutral radicals at temperatures below 1 K. The ions are trapped in a linear quadrupole radio-frequency trap and sympathetically cooled by co-trapped, laser-cooled, atomic ions. The ion trap is coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to readily identify product ion species, as well as to accurately determine trapped ion numbers. We discuss, and present in detail, the design of this ion trap time-of-flight mass spectrometer, as well as the electronics required for driving the trap and mass spectrometer. Furthermore, we measure the performance of this system, which yields mass resolutions of $m/\Delta{}m \geq 1100$ over a wide mass range, and discuss its relevance for future measurements in chemical reaction kinetics and dynamics.

Abstract:We describe the design, commissioning and operation of an ultra-low-vibration closed-cycle cryogenic ion trap apparatus. One hundred lines for low-frequency signals and eight microwave / radio frequency coaxial feed lines offer the possibility of implementing a small-scale ion-trap quantum processor or simulator. With all supply cables attached, more than 1.3 W of cooling power at 5 K is still available for absorbing energy from electrical pulses introduced to control ions. The trap itself is isolated from vibrations induced by the cold head using a helium exchange gas interface. The performance of the vibration isolation system has been characterized using a Michelson interferometer, finding residual vibration amplitudes on the order of 10 nm rms. Trapping of $^9$Be$^+$ ions has been demonstrated using a combination of laser ablation and photoionization.

Abstract:The enhancement of a cryogenic radio frequency 22 pole trap instrument by the addition of ring electrodes is presented in detail. The ring electrodes tightly surround the poles and only a fraction of the applied electric potential penetrates to the trap axis, facilitating the fine control of slow cold ions. A precise computational model, describing the effective mechanical potential created by the applied static and rf fields, governing the ion behaviour, is employed to demonstrate and understand the operation of our setup. The use of ring electrodes for improved extraction of cold stored ions is shown. Variable trapping potentials, placed on one ring electrode, can be used to control the evaporation of only those $\text{H}^+$ ions from the trap, whose kinetic energy exceeds the barrier. This ring electrode trapping opens new possibilities to study processes of minimal kinetic energy release, e. g. spin exchange. We propose a robust modified method for the determination of temperature dependent ion molecule reaction rates, resistant to effects caused by neutral gas freezing and demonstrate it on the reaction of $\text{CO}^+$/$\text{CO}_2^+$ with $\text{H}_2$/$\text{D}_2$. Finally, the use of a supercontinuum laser for quick localisation of spectroscopic bands is examined on the $\text{N}_2^+$ Meinel system.

Abstract:Cryogenic cations, electrons and anions are ubiquitous in space, participate on star formation chemistry and are relevant to studies on the origin of molecular biology homochirality. We report on a system to directly generate and trap these species in the laboratory. Laser ablation of a solid target (LiH) facing a sublimating Ne matrix generates cryogenic electrons, anions, and cations. Axial energy distributions (of e$^-$, H$^\pm$, Li$^\pm$) peaked at 0-25 meV are obtained in a Penning trap at 90 mT and 0.5 eV barrier. Anions can be guided and turned neutral with low recoil energy by near-threshold photodetachment. An immediate prospect for this H$^-$ source is to load hydrogen atoms into the ALPHA antihydrogen trap at CERN towards direct spectroscopic comparison of both conjugated species beyond 13 significant figures. The production is scalable and adaptable to different species including deuterium and tritium, relevant for neutrino mass and fusion research.

Abstract:In vacuo cryogenic environments are ideal for applications requiring both low temperatures and extremely low particle densities. This enables reaching long storage and coherence times, for example, in ion traps, essential requirements for experiments with highly charged ions, quantum computation, and optical clocks. We have developed a novel cryostat continuously refrigerated with a pulse-tube cryocooler and providing the lowest vibration level reported for such a closed-cycle system with 1 W cooling power for a <5 K experiment. A decoupling system suppresses vibrations from the cryocooler by three orders of magnitude down to a level of 10 nm peak amplitudes in the horizontal plane. Heat loads of about 40 W (at 45 K) and 1 W (at 4 K) are transferred from an experimental chamber, mounted on an optical table, to the cryocooler through a vacuum-insulated massive 120 kg inertial copper pendulum. The 1.4 m long pendulum allows installation of the cryocooler in a separate, acoustically isolated machine room. At the experimental chamber, we measured the residual vibrations using an interferometric setup. The positioning of the 4 K elements is reproduced to better than a few micrometer after a full thermal cycle to room temperature. Extreme high vacuum on the 10−15 mbar level is achieved. In collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, such a setup is now in operation at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt for a next-generation optical clock experiment using highly charged ions.

Abstract:Advances in research such as quantum information and quantum chemistry require subtle methods for trapping particles (including ions, neutral atoms, molecules, etc.). Here we propose a hybrid ion trapping method by combining a Paul trap with optical tweezers. The trap combines the advances of the deep-potential feature for the Paul trap and the micromotion-free feature for the optical dipole trap. By modulating the optical-dipole trap synchronously with the radio frequency voltage of the Paul trap, the alternating electrical force in the trap center is fully counteracted, and the micromotion temperature of a cold trapped ion can reach the order of nK while the trap depth is beyond 300K. These features will enable cold collisions between an ion and an atom in the $s$-wave regime and stably trap the produced molecular ion in the cold hybrid system. This will provide a unique platform for probing the interactions between the ions and the surrounding neutral particles and enable the investigation of new reaction pathways and reaction products in the cold regime.

Development of a low-temperature photoelectron spectroscopy instrument using an electrospray ion source and a cryogenically controlled ion trap

Abstract:The ability to control ion temperatures is critical for gas phase spectroscopy and has been a challenge in chemical physics. A low-temperature photoelectron spectroscopy instrument has been developed for the investigation of complex anions in the gas phase, including multiply charged anions, solvated species, and biological molecules. The new apparatus consists of an electrospray ionization source, a three dimensional (3D) Paul trap for ion accumulation and cooling, a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and a magnetic-bottle photoelectron analyzer. A key feature of the new instrument is the capability to cool and tune ion temperatures from 10 to 350 K in the 3D Paul trap, which is attached to the cold head of a closed cycle helium refrigerator. Ion cooling is accomplished in the Paul trap via collisions with a background gas and has been demonstrated by observation of complete elimination of vibrational hot bands in photoelectron spectra of various anions ranging from small molecules to complex species. Further evidence of ion cooling is shown by the observation of H2-physisorbed anions at low temperatures. Cold anions result in better resolved photoelectron spectra due to the elimination of vibrational hot bands and yield more accurate energetic and spectroscopic information. Temperature-dependent studies are made possible for weakly bonded molecular and solvated clusters, allowing thermodynamic information to be obtained.

Abstract:We describe an apparatus where many species of ultracold atoms can be simultaneously trapped and overlapped with many species of ions in a Paul trap. Several design innovations are made to increase the versatility of the apparatus while keeping the size and cost reasonable. We demonstrate the operation of a three-dimensional (3D) magneto-optical trap (MOT) of 7Li using a single external cavity diode laser. The 7Li MOT is loaded from an atomic beam, with atoms slowed using a Zeeman slower designed to work simultaneously for Li and Sr. The operation of a 3D MOT of 133Cs, loaded from a 2D MOT, is demonstrated, and provisions for MOTs of Rb and K in the same vacuum manifold exist. We demonstrate the trapping of 7Li+ and 133Cs+ at different settings of the Paul trap and their detection using an integrated time-of-flight mass spectrometer. We present results on low energy neutral–neutral collisions (133Cs–133Cs, 7Li–7Li, and 133Cs–7Li collisions) and charge–neutral collisions (133Cs+–133Cs and 7Li+–7Li collisions). We show evidence of sympathetic cooling of 7Li+ (133Cs+) due to collisions with the ultracold 7Li (133Cs).

Abstract:The Li-7(+) ion is one of the most important candidates for verifying QED theory and obtaining the precise value of the fine-structure constant alpha. However, direct laser cooling of trapped Li+ ions will lead to strong background fluorescence which will influence the spectrum detection. The sympathetic cooling technique is a good choice to solve the problem. In this work, we report sympathetic cooling of Li-7(+) ions to few mK using Ca-40(+) ions in a linear Paul trap. A mixed ion crystal of Ca-40(+) ions and Li-7(+) ions are obtained. We also analyze the motion frequency spectra of pure Ca-40(+) ions and mixed ions.
Resolved-sideband cooling of a single $^9$Be$^+$ ion in a Penning trap

Abstract:Manipulating individual trapped ions at the single quantum level has become standard practice in radio-frequency ion traps, enabling applications from quantum information processing to precision metrology. The key ingredient is ground-state cooling of the particle's motion through resolved-sideband laser cooling. Ultra-high-presicion experiments using Penning ion traps will greatly benefit from the reduction of systematic errors offered by full motional control, with applications to atomic masses and $g$-factor measurements, determinations of fundamental constants or related tests of fundamental physics. In addition, it will allow to implement quantum logic spectroscopy, a technique that has enabled a new class of precision measurements in radio-frequency ion traps. Here we demonstrate resolved-sideband laser cooling of the axial motion of a single $^9$Be$^+$ ion in a cryogenic 5 Tesla Penning trap system using a two-photon stimulated-Raman process, reaching a mean phonon number of $\bar{n}_z = 0.10(4)$. This is a fundamental step in the implementation of quantum logic spectroscopy for matter-antimatter comparison tests in the baryonic sector of the Standard Model and a key step towards improved precision experiments in Penning traps operating at the quantum limit.

Abstract:High precision mass and g -factor measurements in Penning traps have enabled groundbreaking tests of fundamental physics. The most advanced setups use multi-trap methods, which employ transport of particles between specialized trap zones. Present developments focused on the implementation of sympathetic laser cooling will enable significantly shorter duty cycles and better accuracies in many of these scenarios. To take full advantage of these increased capabilities, we implement fast adiabatic transport concepts developed in the context of trapped-ion quantum information processing in a cryogenic Penning trap system. We show adiabatic transport of a single ion initially cooled to 2 mK over a 2.2-cm distance within 15 ms and with less than 10 mK energy gain at a peak velocity of 3 m/s. These results represent an important step towards the implementation of quantum logic spectroscopy in the (anti-)proton system. Applying these developments to other multi-trap systems has the potential to considerably increase the data-sampling rate in these experiments.

Abstract:Ion traps offer the opportunity to study fundamental quantum systems with high level of accuracy highly decoupled from the environment. Individual atomic ions can be controlled and manipulated with electric fields, cooled to the ground state of motion with laser cooling and coherently manipulated using optical and microwave radiation. Microfabricated ion traps hold the advantage of allowing for smaller trap dimensions and better scalability towards large ion trap arrays also making them a vital ingredient for next generation quantum technologies. Here we provide an introduction into the principles and operation of microfabricated ion traps. We show an overview of material and electrical considerations which are vital for the design of such trap structures. We provide guidance in how to choose the appropriate fabrication design, consider different methods for the fabrication of microfabricated ion traps and discuss previously realized structures. We also discuss the phenomenon of anomalous heating of ions within ion traps, which becomes an important factor in the miniaturization of ion traps.

Trapping, Shaping and Isolating of Ion Coulomb Crystals via State-selective Optical Potentials

Abstract:For conventional ion traps, the trapping potential is close to independent of the electronic state, providing confinement for ions dependent primarily on their charge-to-mass ratio $Q/m$. In contrast, storing ions within an optical dipole trap results in state-dependent confinement. Here we experimentally study optical dipole potentials for $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}^+$ ions stored within two distinctive traps operating at 532 nm and 1064 nm. We prepare the ions in either the $6\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{1/2}}$ electronic ground or the $5\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{3/2}}$/ $5\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{5/2}}$ metastable excited state and probe the relative strength and polarity of the potential. On the one hand, we apply our findings to selectively remove ions from a Coulomb crystal, despite all ions sharing the same $Q/m$. On the other hand, we deterministically purify the trapping volume from parasitic ions in higher-energy orbits, resulting in reliable isolation of Coulomb crystals down to a single ion within a radio-frequency trap.

Abstract:Chiaverini et al. [Quant. Inf. Comput. 5, 419 (2005)] recently suggested a linear Paul trap geometry for ion trap quantum computation that places all of the electrodes in a plane. Such planar ion traps are compatible with modern semiconductor fabrication techniques and can be scaled to make compact, many zone traps. In this paper we present an experimental realization of planar ion traps using electrodes on a printed circuit board to trap linear chains of tens of 0.44 micron diameter charged particles in a vacuum of 15 Pa (0.1 torr). With these traps we address concerns about the low trap depth of planar ion traps and develop control electrode layouts for moving ions between trap zones without facing some of the technical difficulties involved in an atomic ion trap experiment. Specifically, we use a trap with 36 zones (77 electrodes) arranged in a cross to demonstrate loading from a traditional four rod linear Paul trap, linear ion movement, splitting and joining of ion chains, and movement of ions through intersections. We further propose an additional DC biased electrode above the trap which increases the trap depth dramatically, and a novel planar ion trap geometry that generates a two dimensional lattice of point Paul traps.

Abstract:Using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and fundamental statistical mechanics, we analyze the position and velocity distribution of a trapped ion immersed in two ideal gases at differing temperatures. Such a system has been realized in the recently developed MOTion trap architecture. This system has the potential to serve as platform for studying nonequilibrium statistical mechanics in a controlled environment. As examples, we demonstrate a non-Maxwell Boltzmann velocity ionic distribution in the trap, the breakdown of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and position-velocity sorting, wherein high-velocity ionic states are over represented at points of high potential energy. We propose experiments to test these predictions.

Abstract:Trapped ions are pre-eminent candidates for building quantum information processors and quantum simulators. They have been used to demonstrate quantum gates and algorithms, quantum error correction, and basic quantum simulations. However, to realise the full potential of such systems and make scalable trapped-ion quantum computing a reality, there exist a number of practical problems which must be solved. These include tackling the observed high ion-heating rates and creating scalable trap structures which can be simply and reliably produced. Here, we report on cryogenically operated silicon ion traps which can be rapidly and easily fabricated using standard semiconductor technologies. Single $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions have been trapped and used to characterize the trap operation. Long ion lifetimes were observed with the traps exhibiting heating rates as low as $\dot{\bar{n}}=$ 0.33 phonons/s at an ion-electrode distance of 230 $\mu$m. These results open many new avenues to arrays of micro-fabricated ion traps.

Abstract:We implement sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions (HCI) by fully enclosing a linear Paul trap within a superconducting radio-frequency resonator. A quantization magnetic field applied while cooling down into the superconducting state remains present in the trap for centuries and external electromagnetic fluctuations are greatly suppressed. A magnetic field decay rate at the 10$^{-10}$ s$^{-1}$ level is found using trapped Doppler-cooled Be$^+$ ions as hyperfine-structure (hfs) qubits. Ramsey interferometry and spin-echo measurements on magnetically-sensitive hfs transitions yield coherence times of >400 ms, showing excellent passive shielding at frequencies down to DC. For sympathetic cooling of HCI, we extract them from an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) and co-crystallize one together with Doppler-cooled Be$^+$ ions. By subsequently ejecting all but one Be$^+$ ions, we prepare single HCI for quantum logic spectroscopy towards frequency metrology and qubit operations with a great variety of HCI species.

Abstract:Optical controls provided by lasers are the most important and essential techniques in trapped ion and cold atom systems. It is crucial to increase the optical accessibility of the setup to enhance these optical capabilities. Here, we present the design and construction of a new segmented-blade ion trap integrated with a compact glass vacuum cell, in place of the conventional bulky metal vacuum chamber. The distance between the ion and four outside surfaces of the glass cell is 15 mm, which enables us to install four high-numerical-aperture (NA) lenses (with two NA ⩽ 0.32 lenses and two NA ⩽ 0.66 lenses) in two orthogonal transverse directions, while leaving enough space for laser beams in the oblique and longitudinal directions. The high optical accessibility in multiple directions allows the application of small laser spots for addressable Raman operations, programmable optical tweezer arrays, and efficient fluorescence collection simultaneously. We have successfully loaded and cooled a string of 174Yb+ and 171Yb+ ions in the trap, which verifies the trapping stability. This compact high-optical-access trap setup not only can be used as an extendable module for quantum information processing but also facilitates experimental studies on quantum chemistry in a cold hybrid ion-atom system.
