Abstract:AbstractChemical oxidation as a pretreatment step coupled with bioremediation for petroleum-contaminated soil may pose serious impacts on indigenous microorganisms and the available nutrients. Petroleum-contaminated soil were treated by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at initial concentrations of 105 mM (HH), 21 mM (HL), and 105 mM in three equal amounts (HT) without adding any external catalyst. The contents of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and dissolved nutrients (total organic compounds, nitrogen, and phosphate), and the indigenous bacteria community succession (analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA) were investigated over 50 days. Compared to the control treatment without H2O2 addition, H2O2 treatments for the petroleum-contaminated soil significantly promoted the TPH removal especially in the first 4 days and impacted the contents of dissolved nutrients. Both of chemical oxidation and nutrients contributed to microbial community structure changes in alpha diversity. Although the soil microbial community structure had undergone significant changes after different chemical oxidation pretreatments, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Actinobacteria were the main bacterial phyla. Compared with adding H2O2 at one time, H2O2 added in stepwise was beneficial to indigenous bacterial diversity recovery and TPH removal. H2O2 oxidation treatments showed a great influence on the microbial community structures in the start-up stage, while recovery time rather than the oxidation treatments presented greater effects on the composition of the microbial community structure with the incubation time extended. Therefore, adding H2O2 as pretreatment for petroleum-contaminated soil showed little effect on the structure of soil indigenous microbial community from a long-term scale, and was conducive to the continuous removal of TPH by indigenous microorganisms.

Remediation of petroleum contaminated soil by persulfate oxidation coupled with microbial degradation

Abstract:This study was conducted on soil polluted with high concentrations of crude oil (12,835 ± 572.76 mg/kg) with different dosages of persulfate (PS) coupled with hydrocarbon-degrading mixed bacteria (including Enterobacteriaceae, Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Achromobacter) obtained from long-term oil-contaminated soil. The interaction among total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), soil parameters, and microbial communities during a 187-d combined remediation process was evaluated. The result showed that the TPH removal of 1% PS oxidation combined with bioremediation was 80.05%; this was 4.88% and 20.94% higher than that of bioremediation and 1% PS oxidation combined with natural attenuation. This is a result of 1%PS stimulated enzyme secretion and dissolved organic carbon content, especially fulvic acid, improving TPH mobility and bioavailability in soil. Furthermore, introducing mixed bacteria after oxidation further increased enzyme activities and TPH-degrading ability, thus promoting carbon substrate conversion and biodegradation rate. Conversely, the excessive oxidation of 3% and 5% PS had a negative impact on the soil environment and microbial diversity resulting in lower TPH degradation (36%-57%). High-throughput sequencing revealed that the abundance and diversity of soil bacteria decreased in all remediation groups compared to those in the pristine soil. Redundancy analysis showed that the main factors affecting 1% PS oxidation combined with bioremediation during subsequent microbial remediation were pH, cation exchange capacity, and lipase activity, which may indirectly influence TPH biodegradation by increasing the abundance of genus Immundisolibacteraceae, Comamonadaceae, and Acinetobacter. This study provides data on in situ chemical oxidation integrated with the bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils.

Abstract:To date, the oxidation of petroleum hydrocarbons using permanganate has been investigated rarely. Only a few studies on the remediation of unsaturated soil using permanganate can be found in the literature. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first study conducted using permanganate pretreatment to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons in unsaturated soil in combination with subsequent bioaugmentation. The pretreatment of diesel-contaminated unsaturated soil with 0.5-pore-volume (5%) potassium permanganate (PP) by solution pouring and foam spraying (with a surfactant) achieved the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiencies of 37% and 72.1%, respectively. The PP foam, when coupled with bioaugmentation foam, further degraded the TPH to a final concentration of 438 mg/kg (92.1% total reduction). The experiment was conducted without soil mixing or disturbance. The relatively high TPH removal efficiency achieved by the PP–bioaugmentation serial foam application may be attributed to an increase in soil pH caused by the PP and effective infiltration of the remediation agent by foaming. The applied PP foam increased the pH of the acidic soil, thus enhancing microbial activity. The first-order biodegradation rate after PP oxidation was calculated to be 0.068 d−1. Furthermore, 94% of the group of relatively persistent hydrocarbons (C18–C22) was removed by PP–bioaugmentation, as verified by chromatogram peaks. Some physicochemical parameters related to contaminant removal efficiency were also evaluated. The results reveal that PP can degrade soil TPH and significantly enhance the biodegradation rate in unsaturated diesel-contaminated soil when combined with bioaugmentation foam.

Abstract:The biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons is a valuable process used to reduce the ecological influences of oil spills and pollution. This comprehensive review immerses readers in the sophisticated universe of oil-oxidizing organisms, the diversity and functionality of which are unveiled. By examining different bacterial groups, such as aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, fungi, archaea, and algae, the study shows enzymatic and metabolic processes exploited during biodegradation. Environmental factors, substrate characteristics, and microbial interactions are the main determinants that contribute to the good performance of the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons. The effectiveness of various biotechnological strategies like in-situ and ex-situ bioremediation, bioaugmentation, and bio stimulation is being tested to determine their ability to embrace the microbial capabilities for environmental restoration.

Abstract:Intercellular signaling by fibroblast growth factors plays vital roles during embryogenesis. Mice deficient for fibroblast growth factor receptors (FgfRs) show abnormalities in early gastrulation and implantation, disruptions in epithelial–mesenchymal interactions, as well as profound defects in membranous and endochondrial bone formation. Activating FGFR mutations are the underlying cause of several craniosynostoses and dwarfism syndromes in humans. Here we show that a heterozygotic abrogation of FgfR2-exon 9 (IIIc) in mice causes a splicing switch, resulting in a gain-of-function mutation. The consequences are neonatal growth retardation and death, coronal synostosis, ocular proptosis, precocious sternal fusion, and abnormalities in secondary branching in several organs that undergo branching morphogenesis. This phenotype has strong parallels to some Apert's and Pfeiffer's syndrome patients.
Potassium Permanganate/Persulfate Combined Oxidation Remediation of Petroleum Contaminated Soil

Abstract:The stable and resistant nature of petroleum, recognized as a primary environmental pollutant, poses significant risks to soil and ecosystems. Recent attention has shifted towards remediating petroleum-contaminated soil through oxidation, utilizing agents like potassium permanganate or sodium persulfate. This study addresses the drawbacks of chemical oxidation methods, known for high agent consumption and potential secondary pollution. Focusing on the combined oxidation of petroleum-contaminated soil with potassium permanganate and sodium persulfate, the research employs a systematic approach. Single-factor experiments assessed the individual impacts of each agent, while Response Surface Methodology experiments optimized conditions for sodium persulfate oxidation. Orthogonal experiments determined the optimal combination of persulfate types, initial pH, and agent ratios for combined oxidation, including the most effective agent application sequence. Using n-hexadecane and naphthalene as model pollutants, the study investigated the chemical oxidation mechanisms. Ecological toxicity of oxidation byproducts is evaluated with the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST). Results revealed that, at a 2.0 mol/kg dosage and a 5 mL/g water and soil ratio, potassium permanganate and sodium persulfate oxidation effectively remove surface and underground petroleum pollutants within 8 h. Sodium persulfate oxidation was significantly influenced by reaction time, with the dosage and water-to-soil ratio interaction having the strongest impact. Under optimized conditions (5 mL/g water and soil ratio, total dosage of 2.0 mol/kg, 1:1 agent ratio, simultaneous addition of both agents, initial pH of 4, and an 8-h reaction), the combined oxidation process achieved a removal efficiency of 82.90%. The study identified chemical transformations in n-hexadecane and naphthalene oxidation. However, the ecological toxicity of partially oxidized byproducts increased. In conclusion, the combined oxidation of potassium permanganate and sodium persulfate emerges as an efficient method for remediating petroleum-contaminated soil, overcoming limitations associated with traditional chemical oxidation approaches.

Abstract:Chemical oxidation and microbial degradation are promising treatments to remediate soils contaminated with persistent organic pollutants. Moderate pre-oxidation is able to enhance the subsequent bioremediation of organic pollutants in soil. In this study, the effects of pre-oxidation on the subsequent biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) were evaluated. The tested oxidants included potassium permanganate (PP) and iron-activated sodium persulfate (PS) at the concentration of 1-40 mmol L-1. The results showed that 20 mmol L-1 PS and 10 mmol L-1 PP treatments had the highest degradation efficiency of BaP in soil, up to 98.7% and 84.2%, without inhibiting subsequent microbial degradation. 10-20 mmol L-1 of the two oxidants significantly promoted viability of microbial community. Especially, PS facilitated the occurrence of more PAHs-degrading microorganisms. The expression of PAH-degradation gene in PS treatment was significantly higher than that in PP treatment (P < 0.05), leading to 12.0-18.4% higher degradation efficiencies of BaP. In general, proper oxidants of moderate dosages were able to promote microbial bioremediation of persistent organic pollutants in soil.
Degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil via advanced oxidation process using peroxymonosulfate activated by nanoscale zero-valent iron

Abstract:Recently, the use of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for removal of organic contaminants from aqueous and soil system has increased. In this study, we employ nZVI to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in aged diesel-contaminated soil. Upon PMS activation by nZVI, PMS produces more highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) in both aqueous solution and soil compared to other compounds (PMS/Co(II)), as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Thus, nZVI is an effective catalyst for PMS activation, leading to the efficient degradation of diesel oil in soil compared to other catalysts and oxidants. The optimal concentrations of PMS and nZVI were found to be 3 and 0.2%, respectively, showing the best degradation efficiency (61.2% in 2 h). The observed TPH degradation was retarded (up to 19.1-37% efficiency) in the presence of radical scavengers, such as tert-butyl alcohol, nitrobenzene, ethyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol. These results also demonstrate that ROS (hydroxyl and sulfate free radicals) are generated via PMS activation by nZVI. Moreover, more than 96% of TPH can be degraded by sequential applications of PMS/nZVI. Factors affecting TPH degradation, namely PMS/nZVI concentration, soil:solution ratio, soil pH, activators, and oxidants, are also analyzed. The results demonstrate that TPH is degraded to below the residential soil quality limit using PMS/nZVI based on the advanced oxidation process (AOP), which is therefore an effective option for chemical remediation of diesel-contaminated soils over a wide range of pH.

Abstract:Oil degradation by surface-level atmospheric ozone has been largely ignored in the field. To address this knowledge gap, this study investigated the ozonation rate and extent of typical petroleum compounds by simulated surface-level ozone, including total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), n-alkanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Moreover, the work explored the effect of a prototype oil dispersant, Corexit EC9500A, on the ozonation rate. Rapid oxidation of TPHs, n-alkanes and PAHs was observed at various gaseous ozone concentrations (i.e. 86, 200 and 300 ppbv). Generally, the presence of the oil dispersant enhanced ozonation of the oil compounds. The addition of humic acid inhibited the reaction, while increasing salinity accelerated the degradation. Both direct ozonation by molecular ozone and indirect oxidation by ozone-induced radicals play important roles in the degradation process. The findings indicate that ozonation should be taken into account in assessing environmental fate and weathering of spilled oil.
Compositional Changes of Hydrocarbons of Residual Oil in Contaminated Soil During Ozonation

Abstract:Ozonation is an effective method to remove recalcitrant weathered oil in contaminated soil. The purpose of this study was to characterize the compositional changes of hydrocarbons in residual oil during ozonation. A bioremediated soil containing residual oil was ozonated for up to 15 h. A total of 102 compounds in the residual oil were analyzed by GC/MS and 36 diagnostic ratios (DRs) were calculated based on quantitative or semi-quantitative results in order to evaluate the susceptibility of the residual oil compositions to ozonation and the effects of ozonation on the fingerprint profile of the residual oil. The total ozonation removal rates were in the following order: triaromatic steranes (TAS) > steranes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, terpanes > alkanes. Ozone kept the fingerprints of n-alkanes, C-27- to C-34-terpanes, steranes and TAS, separately. Branched alkanes (i.e., pristane and phytane) showed a higher removal rate than n-alkanes. Ozone reactivity of PAHs depended on the number of rings, presence of heteroatoms and level of alkylation. Four- to six-ring PAHs and PAHs with a high level of alkylation showed higher reactivity, while dibenzothiophene and alkylated dibenzothiophenes were found to be resistant to ozonation. Some of the biomarker source ratios remained stable and could still be used for source identification even after some of the biomarkers were removed by >90% by ozonation.
A Comparative Study of Methods for Remediation of Diesel-Contaminated Soil

Abstract:Soil pollution by diesel fuels is a worldwide environmental problem, but little research has been carried out into on-site techniques for remediation of soil polluted by waste solvents. This study compared chemical oxidation and soil washing methods for their efficiency and environmental and economic impacts. Soil was spiked with 0 # diesel to simulate an actual pollution level of about 1260 mg/kg total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH). Fenton-like oxidation eliminated 90.4% of the TPH with a Fe 2+ :H 2 O 2 ratio of 1:10 in 5 d compared with 25.8% removal by the activated persulfate method under the same conditions. In washing tests, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate and Tween 80 were both unsuitable for TPH washing, while ultrapure water removed 36.1% of TPH in 75 min. Only the Fenton-like oxidation technique met remediation goals based on the screening values of the Guideline for Risk Assessment of Contaminated Sites. The environmental impact and economic assessment of techniques demonstrated the superiority of water washing for dealing with low-degree TPH contamination.
Enhanced biodegradation of hydrophobic organic pollutants by the bacterial consortium: Impact of enzymes and biosurfactants

Abstract:Hydrocarbons and their derivative compounds are recalcitrant in nature and causing adverse impacts to the environment and are classified as important pollutants. Removal of these pollutants from the atmosphere is a challenging process. Hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOPs) including crude oil, diesel, dotriacontane (C32), and tetracontane (C40) are subjected to the biodegradation study by using a bacterial consortium consist of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Acinetobacter baumannii. The impact of pH and temperature on the biodegradation process was monitored. During the HOPs biodegradation, the impact of hydrocarbon-degrading extracellular enzymes such as alcohol dehydrogenase, alkane hydroxylase, and lipase was examined, and found average activity about 47.2, 44.3, and 51.8 μmol/mg−1, respectively. Additionally, other enzymes such as catechol 1,2 dioxygenase and catechol 2,3 dioxygenase were found as 118 and 112 μmol/mg−1 Enzyme as an average range in all the HOPs degradation, respectively. Also, the impact of the extracellular polymeric substance and proteins were elucidated during the biodegradation of HOPs with the average range of 116.90, 54.98 mg/L−1 respectively. The impact of biosurfactants on the degradation of different types of HOPs is elucidated. Very slight changes in the pH were also noticed during the biodegradation study. Biodegradation efficiency was calculated as 90, 84, 76, and 72% for crude oil, diesel, C32, and C40, respectively. Changes in the major functional groups (CH, C–O–C, CO, =CH2, CH2, CH3) were confirmed by FTIR analysis and intermediated metabolites were identified by GCMS analysis. The surface-active molecules along with the enzymes played a crucial role in the biodegradation process.

Abstract:The total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in used engine oil-polluted soil constrains its natural bioattenuation. Synergistic actions of biostimulation and bioaugmentation in microbial biodegradation mediated by the addition of keratinaceous materials resulted in the biodegradation of TPH. In this study, keratinous materials served as the source of organic nutrients to improve the soil's physicochemical properties and promote the proliferation of keratinolytic and hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria. After the biodegradation activity, the TPH declined from 48,865 mg kg −1 to a threshold lower than 10,000 mg kg −1 in 180 days except in the control groups. The TPH biodegradation efficiencies ranged between 70.5–91.5% in the treatment groups S1, S2 and S3 while natural bioattenuation in control groups S4 and S5 ranged between 18.5–22.5%. Biodegradation kinetics modelling indicated decay rates (0.0075 to 0.0137 per day) and half-life (50.38 to 91.29 days) in the treatment groups, while the control group recorded decay rates (0.0011 to 0.0014 per day) and half-life (487.29 to 616.74) days. From the culture-independent analysis to identify the keratinolytic and hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria in the soil, the changes in bacterial community structures bacterial dynamics, diversity, community structure and phylogenesis were determined. The keratinolytic and hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria identified were made up of Proteobacteria ( 52%), Actinobacteriota ( 22%), Firmicutes ( 4%), Planctomycetota ( 2%), Acidobacteriota ( 2%) and Chloroflexi ( 1%). The AlkB gene copies in the treatment groups increased from 6.25 × 10 5 to 1.25 × 10 7 copies ng DNA −1 , while the control groups decreased from 6.20 × 10 5 copies ng DNA −1 to 6.05 × 10 4 copies ng DNA −1 in 180 days.

Abstract:Biotechnologies integrated with chemical techniques are promising in treating the soils contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons. Experiments by applying the degrading consortium and the modified Fenton (MF) with the chelator sodium citrate simultaneously were carried out to investigate the effects of the MF reagents on the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), changes in enzyme activities and the succession of microbial communities at the 0, 20, 100 and 500 mmol/kg hydrogen peroxide concentration levels. The ratio between hydrogen peroxide, ferrous sulfate and sodium citrate in the MF reagents was 100:1:1. The results indicated that the degradation of TPHs conformed to first-order kinetics and MF treatments increased the total removal rates of TPHs (4.73-24.26%) and activated dehydrogenase and polyphenol oxidase activities. A shift in microbial communities from Proteobacteria to Bacteroidetes was observed during the enhanced bioremediation, and the predominant genus shifted from Pseudomonas with an average relative abundance (ARAs) of 76.61% at the beginning to Sphingobacterium with ARAs of 52.06% at the later stage. The MF reagents at the proper level could simplify the relationship among the community populations, alleviate their competition and strengthen their associations, which would optimize the removal efficiency.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are typical persistent organic pollutants in the coking-contaminated soil, however, the effects of chemical oxidation on PAHs removal and the responses of indigenous microorganisms in slurry system has not been studied. In this study, the removal efficiency of PAHs and the responses of indigenous microorganisms treated by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and Fenton oxidation under different liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio were investigated. The results showed that the highest removal efficiency of Σ PAHs treated by H 2 O 2 oxidation was at the L/S ratio of 4:1. At such condition, the order of PAHs removal efficiency from high to low was 3-ring PAHs (69.7%–99.9%), followed by high ring PAHs (4-6 rings, 54.5%–95.5%), and 2-ring PAHs (38.1%–52.4%). However, Fenton oxidation had insignificantly increased the removal efficiency of PAHs, partly because the high content of metal cations (i.e., Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ ) in coking contaminated soil. The number of soil microorganisms changed slightly during H 2 O 2 and Fenton oxidation treatments ( ∼ 10 8 copies/g), while the bacterial diversity increased significantly. Microbial function analysis suggested that the carbohydrate metabolism, xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism mainly contributed to the degradation of PAHs. Moreover, the function genes and pathways (i.e., amino sugar metabolism and citrate cycle) that involved in PAHs biodegradation increased, which can further promote the biological degradation of PAHs by indigenous microorganisms.

Sustainable long-alkanes biodegradation with moderate pre-oxidation in soil

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of sustainable biodegradation of long-alkanes with moderate pre-oxidation in soil. Moderate pre-oxidation was performed with two consecutive doses of 1.35 mL 30% of H2O2 (225 mM) in two soil. After moderate pre-oxidation, the experiment of sustainable biodegradation of long-alkanes during 80 d was conducted. Then, long-alkanes relative activity coefficient (K), NH4+-N allocation (G) and the performance of hydrocarbon degraders (E) was calculated. Long-alkanes were sustainably biodegraded with moderate pre-oxidation (1765 mg/kg, 2438 mg/kg and 2672 mg/kg). Long-alkanes biodegradation (8723 mg/kg) with moderate pre-oxidation was 2.5 folds of excessive pre-oxidation. The average increment in long-alkanes biodegradation with moderate pre-oxidation was 30–38% as K values improved (0.28–0.48). The bacterial destruction D decreased to 14–17% and hydrocarbon degraders activity increased to 0.065 mol CO2/kg with moderate pre-oxidation. Basidiomycota and Acinetobacter sp. showed high tolerance with moderate pre-oxidation and remained dominant strains throughout the bioremediation. NH4+-N consumption played an essential role as nutrients in growth of hydrocarbon degraders (Basidiomycota and Acinetobacter sp.). Then, high and sustained E was achieved with decreased D and elevated hydrocarbon degraders activity, resulting in high K. So, long-alkanes sustainably increasing biodegraded under high E assisted with elevated G with moderate pre-oxidation.GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Modified Fenton technique has been widely used to remediate soils contaminated with crude oil but significantly limited to soil organic matter (SOM) consuming oxidants. In this study, soils with developed SOM inactivation by FeOOH formed in situ were created and spiked with crude oil (total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH): 19453 mg/kg), then treated by modified Fenton reagents. The reaction activity of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) relative to TPH (K) notably increased to 0.65 when the degree of developed inactivation of the SOM (β) was 100% (DIS-100), which was 1.45, 2.03 and 2.83-fold than that of DIS-50, DIS-15 and control (CK), respectively. Meanwhile, the higher the K, the more •OH transferred, which realized the efficient oriented oxidation of TPH. Moreover, improving the transfer of •OH from SOM to TPH was more important than increasing •OH production in soil remediation. With the β increasing to 100%, the ratio of invalid H2O2 decomposition to produce O2 decreased to 22%, equal to 25% reduction compared to CK. Therefore, when β was 100%, the utilization efficiency of H2O2 was improved to 1.48 mg/mmol, which was approximately 1.39, 3.35 and 5.43-fold higher than the efficiency got by DIS-50, DIS-15 and CK, respectively, achieving the cost-effective dedicated oxidation of TPH. In addition, the FeOOH cross-linked with SOM via Fe-O-C and Fe-N bonds to develop inactivation of SOM. In general, this study highlighted a new insight into the effect of developed inactivation of SOM on soil remediation.
Enhanced oriented oxidation of all alkanes through redistributing hydroxy radical by inactivating oxygen-containing functional groups in soil organic matter

Abstract:To explore the effect of oxygen-containing functional groups in SOM on the oriented oxidation of all n -alkanes (OX-A) (C 10 - C 30 ), different proportions of NaOH (NaOH: protein I = 1:1 and 2:1) were used to pretreat two soils (S1 and S2). Then the crude oil (S1: 18,173 mg/kg; S2: 9853 mg/kg) was added to carry six groups of Fenton oxidation treatments. The results showed that when the content of C-O, O-H of phenol or alcohol, and O-H of carboxyl in the soil decreased, the two soils realized oriented oxidation of all n -alkanes under the low intensity of hydroxyl radical (•OH) (1.02 a.u.). The oriented oxidation of all n -alkanes group was as high as 4477.00 mg/kg (S1) and 2685.00 mg/kg (S2), respectively, which was 0.53–2.33 times of the other groups. In addition, after 1:1 regulation, the ability of •OH to capture oxygen-containing functional groups in SOM decreased, then the relative reactivity coefficient k of •OH to total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) increased to 2.01 and 1.81 (k > 1), which was 1.02–1.47 and 0.93–1.32 higher than the other five groups. The competition of SOM for oxidants was decreased by improving the reactivity of •OH with TPH. Thus, more •OH (S1: 48%, S2: 46%) transferred to efficiently oxidize TPH (S1: 310.60 mg/mmol, S2: 220.20 mg/mmol). In general, this study reduced the ineffective consumption of oxidants after developing inactivation, thereby the utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 was improved and the stability of petroleum-contaminated soil remediation was enhanced.

Abstract:The weathering process can cause the volatilization of light components in crude oil, leading to the accumulation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in weathered oil field soils. These TPH compounds are relatively resistant to biodegradation, posing a significant environmental hazard by contributing to soil degradation. TPH represents a complex mixture of petroleum-based hydrocarbons classified as persistent organic pollutants in soil and groundwater. The release of TPH pollutants into the environment poses serious threats to ecosystems and human health. Currently, various methods are available for TPH-contaminated soil remediation, with bioremediation technology recognized as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach. While converting TPH to CO 2 is a common remediation method, the complex structures and diverse types of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) involved can result in excessive CO 2 generation, potentially exacerbating the greenhouse effect. Alternatively, transforming TPH into energy forms like methane through bioremediation, followed by collection and reuse, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. This process relies on the synergistic interaction between Methanogens archaea and syntrophic bacteria, forming a consortium known as the oil-degrading bacterial consortium. Methanogens produce methane through anaerobic digestion (AD), with hydrogenotrophic methanogens (HTMs) utilizing H 2 as an electron donor, playing a crucial role in biomethane production. Candidatus Methanoliparia ( Ca. Methanoliparia ) was found in the petroleum archaeal community of weathered Oil field in northeast China. Ca. Methanoliparia has demonstrated its independent ability to decompose and produce new energy (biomethane) without symbiosis, contribute to transitioning weathered oil fields towards new energy. Therefore, this review focuses on the principles, mechanisms, and developmental pathways of HTMs during new energy production in the degradation of PHs. It also discusses strategies to enhance TPH degradation and recovery methods.

Abstract:Petroleum‐contaminated soil (PCS) does great harm to ecological environment and human health. In this study, Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis approach was developed to remove petroleum hydrocarbons of PCS in order to improve the removal efficiency of total petroleum hydrocarbon. According to the experimental results, the macromolecules were degraded and the contents of asphaltenes and resins were reduced after Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis treatment. Petroleum‐contaminated soil (PCS) is urgently to be remediated due to its risk to ecological environment and human health. In this study, a Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis strategy was employed to accomplish effective petroleum removal and PCS remediation. The highest total petroleum hydrocarbon removal efficiency could achieve 99.6% after 2 h Fenton oxidation, with H2O2/Fe2+, 6:1, and pH 3, followed by pyrolysis at 370°C. The organic compositions of the soil after Fenton oxidation, the kinetics and process of the pyrolysis, morphologies and structures of the treated soil, as well as energy consumption and cost savings were comprehensively researched and analyzed. Through the Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis treatment, the macromolecules were effectively degraded and the contents of asphaltenes and resins were significantly reduced in the soil. Graphitized carbon was dominatingly existed after the pyrolysis. A 1.5 order reaction model was proposed to reasonably describe the pyrolysis remediation process of PCS. The Fenton oxidation–pyrolysis treatment can reduce energy consumption and cost compared with pyrolysis alone. This work not only offered an alternative approach of PCS remediation, but also provided theoretical guidance for practical soil remediation.
