Abstract:Abstract Introduction Developmental shifts towards later sleep/circadian timing during adolescence are often at odds with early school start times, resulting in circadian misalignment and sleep restriction, as well as stark differences between sleep timing/duration on school nights versus weekends. While the sleep aspects of this mismatch have been well-characterized, limited objective data addresses within-person changes in circadian phase across the week. In a sample of high school students, this project aimed to (1) characterize within-person changes in circadian phase from school nights to weekend nights, and (2) examine whether later circadian phase relates to other sleep/circadian characteristics across the full week. Methods Sample included 115 high school students (mean age 17.3, 55.7% female, 88.7% White) reporting at least one “standard drink” of alcohol in their lifetime. Participants completed baseline self-report measures, wrist actigraphy for 8 days, and two overnight visits (Thursday and Sunday) for salivary melatonin sample collection. The Munich Chronotype Questionnaire assessed chronotype and social jetlag. Actigraphy measures included sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), total sleep time (TST), and midsleep timing. Circadian phase was calculated as the dim light melatonin onset (DLMO; 4 pg/ml threshold). Actigraphy and DLMO measures were separately calculated for school nights, weekends, and overall (mean). Linear regression was used to examine associations, covarying for sex, race, and SES. Results Circadian phase (DLMO) was systematically later on Sunday (mean 37+/-41 minutes later; d=0.68, p< 0.00). Later school night DLMO was associated with longer SOL (b=0.05,p=0.002), shorter WASO (b=-0.03,p=0.018), and shorter TST (b=-0.18,p=0.001) on school nights, as well as later chronotype (b=-1.72,p< 0.0001). Later weekend DLMO was associated with longer TST (b=0.22,p=0.042) on weekends. Later DLMO (school night, weekend, overall) was associated with larger weekday-weekend differences in actigraphic TST (p’s< 0.001) and more social jetlag (p’s< 0.03). Conclusion Circadian phase shows systematic within-person differences across school nights and weekends, broadly paralleling social jetlag based on sleep timing. While later circadian phase was associated with later chronotype, as well as more difficulty falling asleep and less sleep on school nights, this was specific to circadian phase assessed on school nights. Abstract:Adolescent sleep research has focused heavily on duration and quality with less work examining chronotype, defined as individual differences in sleep–wake timings driven by the circadian rhythm. This study filled a gap in the literature by utilizing actigraphy-based sleep estimates in an accelerated longitudinal design in order to better understand the developmental trajectory and individual stability of chronotype during adolescence, as well as the associations between chronotype with risky behaviors, substance use, and depressive symptoms. A total of 329 adolescents (57% female; 21% Asian American, 31% European American, 41% Latino, 7% other ethnicity) provided actigraphy-based estimates of sleep and completed questionnaires at up to three time points, two years apart, beginning at 14–17 years of age. Multilevel modeling revealed a non-linear developmental trend in chronotype whereby eveningness increased from 14 to 19 years of age followed by a trend toward morningness. Individual differences in chronotype exhibited modest stability during adolescent development. Furthermore, greater evening chronotype was associated with more risky behaviors and substance use among males, and more substance use among older adolescents, whereas depressive symptoms were not associated with chronotype. The findings from this study may have practical implications for adolescent behavioral health interventions targeted at reducing risky behaviors and substance use among youth.

Low-intensity scheduled morning exercise for adolescents with a late chronotype: a novel treatment to advance circadian phase?

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives During adolescence, an interplay between biological and environmental factors leads to constrained sleep duration and timing. The high prevalence of sleep deprivation during this developmental period is a public health concern, given the value of restorative sleep for mental, emotional, and physical health. One of the primary contributing factors is the normative delay of the circadian rhythm. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a gradually advanced morning exercise schedule (30 min shift each day) completed for 45 min on 5 consecutive mornings, on the circadian phase and daytime functioning of adolescents with a late chronotype, compared with a sedentary control group. Methods A total of 18 physically inactive male adolescents aged 15–18 years spent 6 nights at the sleep laboratory. The morning procedure included either 45 min walking on a treadmill or sedentary activities in dim light. Saliva dim light melatonin onset, evening sleepiness, and daytime functioning were assessed during the first and last night of laboratory attendance. Results The morning exercise group had a significantly advanced (earlier) circadian phase (27.5 min ± 32.0), while sedentary activity resulted in a phase delay (−34.3 min ± 53.2). Morning exercise also led to higher evening sleepiness in the earlier hours of the night, but not at bedtime. Mood measures improved slightly in both study conditions. Conclusions These findings highlight the phase-advancing effect of low-intensity morning exercise among this population. Future studies are needed to test the transference of these laboratory findings to adolescents’ real life.
A Longitudinal Examination between Chronotype and Insomnia in Youths: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis

Abstract:Adolescence and young adulthood are transitional periods associated with significant changes and challenges, leading to a heightened vulnerability to sleep disturbances and mental health difficulties. This stage is often associated with an increased preference for eveningness, manifested as a later chronotype. The current study aimed to investigate the directionality of the association between chronotype, based on an individual's sleep-wake behaviour, and insomnia in young people using a two-wave panel design with a 12-month interval. A total of 370 participants aged 15-24 (mean age: 21.0 ± 2.0, 72.7% female) were recruited from local secondary schools and universities. Insomnia symptoms were assessed using the Insomnia Severity Index, while chronotype was measured using the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. Temporal associations were analysed using a series of cross-lagged panel models. The best fitting and most parsimonious model indicated that a later chronotype at baseline predicts more severe insomnia symptoms at the 12-month follow-up after accounting for autoregressive effects. However, the opposite causal model, where baseline insomnia symptoms predicted the chronotype at the 12-month follow-up, was not supported. These findings suggest that a late chronotype may be a potential risk factor for the development of insomnia in young people, emphasising the importance of considering circadian factors in the prevention and treatment of sleep disturbances among this population.

Abstract:Anionic hydrated titanate (H(n)TiO(m): HTO) nanosheets and cationic magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide (Mg-Al LDH) nanosheets were electrophoretically deposited on positively and negatively charged indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrates, respectively. The HTO nanosheets and Mg-Al LDH nanosheets obtained were identified in neutral water as H(2)Ti(4)O(9)·nH(2)O with a ζ-potential of -23 mV and Mg(6)Al(2)(OH)(18)·4.5H(2)O with a ζ-potential of +41 mV, respectively. Dense and smooth HTO and Mg-Al LDH films with layered structures with thicknesses of about 10-15 μm were prepared in 300 s at 7.5 V by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from the nanosheet suspensions. Both EPD HTO and LDH films showed elasticity because of their layered laminate structures. The HTO thick films demonstrated large adsorption properties and high photocatalytic activity, while the Mg-Al LDH thick films showed relatively high ionic conductivity of 10(-5) S cm(-1) at 80 °C and 80% relative humidity.
Later ("evening") circadian preference is associated with poorer executive, academic, and attentional functioning in adolescents with and without ADHD

Abstract:Background: Adolescents vary considerably in their circadian phase preference; those with greater "eveningness" (also known as "night owls") have later bedtimes, wake times, and peak arousal compared to those with greater "morningness." Prior research suggests that (a) greater eveningness is associated with worse academic, executive, and attentional functioning; and (b) adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tend to be high in eveningness and to have deficits in these school-related constructs. However, few studies have examined circadian preference alongside two potential confounds-sleep duration and sleep quality-as predictors of daytime functioning, or whether the strength of associations differs across adolescents with and without ADHD. Methods: Participants were 302 adolescents (Mage = 13.17 years; 44.7% female; 81.8% White); approximately half (52%) had ADHD. A multi-method, multi-informant design was used. Specifically, adolescents reported on their circadian preference, school night sleep duration, and sleep quality. Adolescents provided ratings of their academic motivation (intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation) and were administered standardized achievement tests in reading and math. Adolescents and parents completed ratings of daily life executive functioning (behavioral, emotion, and cognitive regulation), and they and teachers also provided ratings of ADHD inattentive symptoms. Results: Above and beyond sleep duration, sleep quality, and covariates (sex, family income, pubertal development, medication use), greater eveningness was uniquely associated with poorer academic, executive, and attentional functioning across most measures. Sleep quality was uniquely associated with a handful of outcomes, and sleep duration was not significantly uniquely associated with any outcome in the regression analyses. ADHD status did not moderate effects. Conclusions: This study provides compelling evidence that poorer academic, executive, and attentional functioning are more closely associated with greater eveningness than with sleep duration or quality in adolescents. Findings suggest that targeting circadian preference may be important to reduce these problems in adolescents, especially in clinical samples such as ADHD for whom academic, executive, and attentional difficulties are exceptionally common.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Evening chronotype is associated with increased risk for depression and suicide-related outcomes. This may be due to circadian-sleep misalignment, as previous studies have found chronotype-related differences in the relative timing between circadian phase (i.e., dim light melatonin; DLMO) and sleep. However, such differences may be attributable to variation in intrinsic circadian period length across chronotypes, rather than reflect actual circadian misalignment among those with an evening chronotype. The present study sought to compare predicted circadian and sleep timing across chronotypes using a light-based mathematical model of the human circadian pacemaker that controlled for intrinsic period length. Methods This was a secondary analysis of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Sleep and the Hispanic Health Study / Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Sueño datasets. Scores on the Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire were grouped into “morning,” “intermediate,” and “evening” chronotypes. Sleep timing was determined by actigraphy and DLMO was predicted (pDLMO) from light and sleep/wake states using the extended Kronauer model. Circadian-sleep alignment was calculated as the timing between pDLMO and either sleep onset or offset (i.e., phase angles). Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVAs) were used to evaluate the associations between chronotype and the timing/alignment of circadian and sleep variables, with post-hoc comparisons conducted using non-parametric bootstrapping. Results MANCOVAs identified chronotype differences in sleep onset, pDLMO, and pDLMO-sleep onset phase angles in both datasets. Chronotype was associated with pDLMO-sleep offset phase angles in MESA Sleep only. pDLMO and sleep onset were ~1-2 hours later for participants with an evening chronotype (p < .001 for all). In MESA Sleep, participants with an evening chronotype had a pDLMO-sleep onset phase angle that was ~30 minutes (95% CI: 13.5, 46.9; p = .002) shorter than those with a morning chronotype; in HCHS/SOL Sueño, it was ~17 minutes (95% CI: 3.6, 29.1; p = .033) shorter. Conclusion Assuming equal intrinsic periods, participants with an evening chronotype had a light exposure profile that predicted sleep onset at an earlier circadian phase than those with a morning or intermediate chronotype. These findings provide further evidence that an evening chronotype may be associated with chronic circadian-sleep misalignment. Support (if any) None

The impact of sleep on adolescent depressed mood, alertness and academic performance

Abstract:The present study developed and tested a theoretical model examining the inter-relationships among sleep duration, sleep quality, and circadian chronotype and their effect on alertness, depression, and academic performance. Participants were 385 adolescents aged 13-18 years (M = 15.6, SD = 1.0; 60% male) were recruited from eight socioeconomically diverse high schools in South Australia. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires during class time and recorded their sleep patterns in a sleep diary for 8 days. A good fit was found between the model and the data (χ(2)/df = 1.78, CFI = .99, RMSEA = .04). Circadian chronotype showed the largest association with on adolescent functioning, with more evening-typed students reporting worse sleep quality (β = .50, p < .001) and diminished alertness (β = .59, p < .001). Sleep quality was significantly associated with poor outcomes: adolescents with poorer sleep quality reported less sleep on school nights (β = -.28, p < .001), diminished daytime alertness (β = .33, p < .001), and more depressed mood (β = .47, p < .001). Adolescents with poor sleep quality and/or more evening chronotype were also more likely to report worse grades, through the association with depression. Sleep duration showed no direct effect on adolescent functioning. These results identified the importance of two lesser-studied aspects of sleep: circadian chronotype and sleep quality. Easy-to-implement strategies to optimize sleep quality and maintain an adaptive circadian body clock may help to increase daytime alertness, elevate mood, and improve academic performance.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Adolescents with later circadian timing evidence an increased risk for depression. Depressed individuals report higher negative affect (NA), especially in the morning, which may reflect altered circadian timing in NA. Untangling the circadian influences on mood is challenging due to inconsistent operationalizations of circadian timing. This study aims to analyze the associations between three metrics of circadian timing (circadian preference, chronotype, and circadian phase) and daily levels of NA among adolescents. Methods This study analyzed 8 days of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data among 119 adolescents (54.6% female; mean age 17.3 years). Participants completed sleep diaries with a visual analog scale (VAS) measuring NA (0-100; calm-tense) each morning, and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale–Short Form (PANAS-SF) approximately every 3 waking hours. NA scores were averaged across mornings, evenings, and overall. Circadian preference was assessed by the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM), chronotype by the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ), and circadian phase by salivary dim light melatonin onset (DLMO; 4pg/ml threshold). We conducted multiple regression analyses to examine circadian preference, chronotype, and circadian phase predicting morning (PANAS, VAS), evening, and overall NA (PANAS), controlling for age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Results Correlations between circadian metrics were low (rDLMO-MCTQ=.20; rDLMO-CSM=.39; rCSM-MCTQ=.27). Greater evening preference predicted higher morning NA (PANAS: p=.026, β=-.21; VAS: p< 0.001, β=-.33) and evening NA (p=.032, β=-.20), but not overall NA (p=.106, β=-.15). These associations were not significant after isolating the Sleep Timing and Activity factor of the CSM. Later chronotype predicted higher NA on the morning VAS (VAS: p=.048, β=.18), but not on the PANAS (p=.756, β=-.03); chronotype did not predict evening NA (p=.259, β=-.11) or overall NA (p=.412, β=-.08). Circadian phase did not predict morning NA (PANAS: p=.841, β=-.02; VAS: p=.552, β=.05), evening NA (p=.625, β=.05), or overall NA (p=.391, β=.03). Conclusion These results highlight the importance of specificity when operationalizing circadian timing and NA, and add to the mixed literature concerning the role of circadian phase in negative mood modulation. Adolescents with later chronotype may be particularly vulnerable to negative mood in the morning. Important next steps involve modeling diurnal patterns of NA and positive affect. Abstract:Sleep disorders can be a negative factor both for learning as for the mental and physical development of adolescents. It has been shown that, in many populations, adolescents tend to have a poor sleep quality, and a very late chronotype. Furthermore, these features peak at adolescence, in the sense that adults tend to sleep better and have an earlier chronotype. But what happens when we consider adolescents in a population where already adults have poor sleep quality and a very late chronotype? We have conducted two non-clinical studies in the city of Bariloche, Argentina aimed at measuring sleep quality, chronotype, and social jet lag, using the Pittsburgh and Munich questionnaires. These were administered individually to groups of high school students, as well as to smaller samples of adults and preadolescents, in order to study differences between adolescents and these groups. The results show that in this population sleep quality is much poorer than in most other healthy populations recorded elsewhere. Furthermore, sleep quality is consistently worse for adolescents than for the other groups. The difference with adults seems to be due mainly to increased daytime sleepiness and sleep latency, whereas the difference with preadolescents seems to be due mainly to shorter sleep duration. We also found that the chronotypes of all the groups are very late, with a peak at an age between 18 and 24 ys. Social jet lag and sleep onset latency are also large, and they peak at adolescence, which suggests that they might be closely related to the large prevalence of poor sleep quality that we find in adolescents.

Abstract:Objectives: Evening-chronotype is associated with increased socioemotional problems among school-aged children. Inadequate sleep and increased sleep problems are also prevalent among evening-chronotype children and may underlie the relationship between chronotype and socioemotional problems. However, it is unclear whether the association between chronotype and socioemotional problems at school-age may be mediated by poorer sleep during late preschool. Methods: Our study utilized cross-sectional data to examine the relations between chronotype, sleep duration, sleep problems and socioemotional problems in preschoolers. We subsequently performed longitudinal mediation analyses to examine how the association between chronotype at preschool-age and later socioemotional problems at school-age may be mediated by sleep problems and sleep duration during late preschool. 399 children from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort study were included for analyses. Children's chronotype were identified with the Children's Chronotype Questionnaire at 4.5 years old. Sleep duration and problems were measured with the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire at 4.5 and 6 years old. Socioemotional problems were evaluated using the Child Behavioral Checklist at 4 and 7 years of age. All questionnaires were caregiver-reported. Results: Linear regressions demonstrated that eveningness was associated with concurrent sleep problems and internalizing, externalizing and total behavioral problems at 4-4.5 years old, but not sleep duration. Mediation analyses supported that sleep problems (and not sleep duration) at 6 years old mediated the relationship between chronotype and socioemotional problems at 7 years old. Conclusions: Our findings suggest addressing sleep problems during early development may reduce socioemotional problems at school-age, especially among evening-chronotype children.

Abstract:Eveningness has been found to negatively affect adolescents' sleep and daytime functioning. Furthermore, eveningness is associated with greater impulsivity than morningness. Externalizing behavior could be chronotype-related, implying that the alteration of the circadian rhythm itself is connected to aspects of emotion and emotion regulation. The present study investigated chronotype-related differences in emotional and behavioral problems, especially aggression and antisocial behavior in children and adolescents. We conducted a comprehensive search via web of knowledge (MEDLINE, web of science), EBSCO, Ovid, PubMed, Google Scholar and PsycINDEX using the keywords: chronotype, chronobiology, morningness, eveningness, owls and larks as well as diurnal preference to fully capture every aspect of chronotype. For aggression we used the search terms: aggression, anger, hostility, violence, anti-social behavior, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, delinquency, social adjustment and externalizing behavior. N = 13 studies were included concerning chronotype, childhood, adolescence and antisocial behavior. Results showed that children and adolescents being E-types were more affected by daytime impairments. Additionally, behavioral and emotional problems as aggression or antisocial behavior were more pronounced in E- than in M-types. Our findings support an association of eveningness and the impact of aggression on children and adolescents. Longitudinal investigations should be conducted in order to insure causality of the effects in question. In addition, the elevated vulnerability toward aggression in evening types demonstrates the need for prevention and intervention programs that educate youths in proper sleep hygiene and evoke an awareness of the consequences of a habitually diminished sleep quality.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Biological changes during adolescence naturally delay the circadian sleep-wake cycle. Adolescents struggle between the imposed timing of their sleep-wake cycle by social demands and their desired one, resulting in circadian misalignment. Circadian misalignment has been associated with a higher risk for mental health problems. We examined whether objective and subjective metrics of circadian misalignment are associated with internalizing symptoms (IS) and externalizing behaviors (EB) in adolescents. Methods We studied 376 adolescents from the Penn State Child Cohort (median 16 years; 47% female; 21% racial/ethnic minority) who had a minimum of 3-nights of at-home actigraphy (ACT), and 9-h in-lab polysomnography (PSG). ACT-measured sleep midpoint (SM) was calculated as the central point of the sleep period, while sleep regularity (SR) was calculated as the intra-individual standard deviation of the SM. Circadian preference (CP) was measured with the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. IS and EB were measured by parent- or self-report on Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment using developmentally-appropriate forms and norms. Stepwise linear regression models adjusted for demographics (sex, race/ethnicity, age, BMI percentile), sleep disorders (insomnia, PSG-apnea/hypopnea index) and insufficient sleep (ACT-mean sleep duration, ACT-sleep duration variability). Results Both CP (r=-.118, p=.022) and SR (r=.116, p=.024) were associated with IS, however, they competed between each other in regression models resulting in marginally significant associations (β=-.094, p=.079 and β=.092, p=.084, respectively) that were further attenuated after adjusting individually for covariables (β=-.072, p=.190 and β=.076, p=.163, respectively). Both CP (r=-.230, p<.001) and SR (r=.140, p=.006) were associated with EB; however, only CP (β=-.153, p=.004) remained significantly associated with EB after adjusting for covariables (β=-.130, p=.016). Conclusion Assessing self-reported eveningness is a useful and inexpensive tool to identify adolescents in whom circadian misalignment contributes to mood and behavioral problems. However, it appears that its combination with objective assessments, particularly irregularity of the sleep-wake cycle, may yield the most predictive results. Abstract:Objectives: Bedtime procrastination (BTP) refers to the tendency to delay sleep beyond an intended bedtime, in favor of continuing evening activities. BTP has been associated with negative sleep outcomes (later timing, shorter duration, poorer quality), and is viewed as a problem of exercising self-control. BTP could be particularly challenging in adolescents, given the combined effects of increasing bedtime autonomy, later chronotype, and a still developing self-control capacity. Thus far, research on BTP has only been based on self-report measures. Here we examined the influence of BTP on adolescent sleep, using objective measures of sleep. Methods: About 121 adolescents aged 14-19 years completed a survey on BTP, sleep quality, chronotype, and mental health. Subsequently, habitual sleep was actigraphically monitored for up to 2 weeks, and participants completed a temporal discounting task (a proxy for impulsivity). Associations between BTP, chronotype, and actigraphy-measured sleep were examined for school nights and non-school nights separately. Results: Greater BTP was associated with poorer subjective sleep, eveningness chronotype, and higher daytime fatigue, as well as higher anxiety/depression scores. Measured using actigraphy, greater BTP predicted later bedtimes and shorter sleep duration on school nights, even when controlling for chronotype. On non-school nights, eveningness chronotype, but not BTP, predicted later bedtimes and wake-up times. BTP was not correlated with temporal discounting. Conclusions: Bedtime procrastination exerts significant influence on subjective and objective sleep measures in adolescents. Its effects are most prominent on school nights and can be separated from the effects of chronotype, which has stronger effects on sleep timing on non-school nights.

Abstract:Abstract Chronotype has been mostly assessed with subjective scales. Objective assessment has been undertaken with actigraphy, although problems may occur in classifying chronotype. The aims of the study were to assess chronotype in school-age children using a novel integrative measurement (TAP) derived from non-invasive assessments of wrist temperature (T) physical activity (A) and body position (P) and to explore associations between chronotype, sleep disturbances, and metabolic components. Four-hundred-thirty-two children of 8–12 years were recruited from a Mediterranean area of Spain. Measurements were: (a) Chronotype objectively (7-day-rhythms of TAP) and subjectively measured (Munich-chronotype-self-reported questionnaire); (b) sleep rhythms and light exposition; (c) 7-day-diaries of food intake; (d) anthropometry and metabolic parameters; (e) academic scores. TAP acrophase was able to assess eveningness. As compared to more morning-types, more evening-types displayed lower amplitude in temperature rhythms, increased physical activity in the evening, delayed sleep and midpoint of intake and had more frequent social jet lag ( P < 0.05). More evening-types had higher light intensity at 2 h before sleep and lower melatonin values (01:00 h). Eveningness associated with higher BMI and metabolic risk (higher values of insulin, glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol). Evening-types presented better grades in art. In conclusion, more evening-types, as objectively assessed, presented sleep alterations, social jet lag, obesity and higher metabolic risk.

Abstract:<p>Chronotype is related to mental health, with evening chronotypes being more susceptible to psychological disorders than intermediate and morning types. The present study investigated the relationship between chronotype, mental health, sleep quality, and social support in Canadian young adults. We surveyed 3160 university students aged 18–35 years. Participants completed the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Medical Outcomes Study – Social Support Survey. We conducted Bonferroni-corrected one-way analyses of covariance with post hoc paired comparisons to determine the relationship between the aforementioned variables, with age and sex as covariates. We further looked at the moderation of social support on the relationship between chronotype and sleep quality. Overall, 55%, 36% and 9% of participants were classified as intermediate, evening and morning types, respectively. There was a significant difference between chronotype on levels of depression, anxiety, and sleep quality, with evening types reporting more severe symptomology than morning-types and intermediate types. Morning types reported greater levels of overall social support and mindfulness. Evening types reported the lowest levels of all types of social support. Social support did not moderate the relationship between chronotype and sleep quality. This study further demonstrates the association between worse psychological well-being and eveningness and between more social support, and mindfulness in morning chronotype young adults. Education and intervention are warranted to help evening chronotypes manage the potential negative features of their circadian rhythm, as well as to cultivate a greater sense of social support and mindfulness.</p>

Abstract:Purpose: Developmental changes in sleep in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are understudied. In non-ASD youth, adolescents exhibit a "night owl chronotype" (i.e., later sleep/wake timing) and social jetlag (i.e., shifts in sleep timing across school nights and weekends), with corresponding sleep problems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate age trends in chronotype, social jetlag, and sleep problems in high-risk youth with ASD. Methods: Youth with ASD (N = 171), ages 5-21 years old, were enrolled at the time of admission to specialized psychiatric units. Caregivers reported children's demographic information, habitual sleep timing, and sleep problems. Multivariate analyses evaluated the effect of age on chronotype, social jetlag, and sleep problems and the effects of chronotype and social jetlag on sleep problems. Covariates and moderators included sex, race, verbal ability, autism symptom severity, supplemental melatonin, and pubertal status. Results: Older age was associated with later chronotype, more social jetlag, fewer sleep anxiety/co-sleeping problems, fewer night waking and parasomnia problems, and more daytime alertness problems. The effect of age on chronotype was stronger for youth with greater social affective symptom severity. Mediation analyses showed that later chronotype statistically mediated the association between age and daytime alertness problems. Conclusions: Youth with ASD may exhibit night owl chronotype behavior and social jetlag as they enter adolescence. Shifts toward a later chronotype may be exacerbated by autism severity and may contribute to alertness problems and sleepiness during the day. Chronotype is modifiable and may be leveraged to improve daytime functioning in youth with ASD.

Abstract:Insufficient sleep and irregular sleep hours are common in adolescents, who experience a delayed sleep phase due to biopsychosocial changes associated with puberty, resulting in later sleep times. However, early morning class hours shorten sleep duration on weekdays. This condition is harmful to cognitive performance, which may be accentuated in girls due to a greater sleep need and less resistance to sleep deprivation. In this study, we evaluated sex differences concerning temporal sleep patterns, social jetlag, and attention in high school adolescents attending morning classes. Students ( n = 146 - F: 73-16.1 ± 0.8 years; M: 73-16.2 ± 0.9 years) completed a Health and Sleep questionnaire, kept a sleep diary for 10 days, which incorporated a Maldonado Sleepiness Scale, and performed a Continuous Performance Task. Girls went to bed earlier and woke up on weekends, and spent more time in bed at night and in 24 h on weekdays and weekends, while they also had a greater irregularity in wake-up times ( p < 0.05). There were no differences between sexes in terms of social jetlag, sleep debt, and sleepiness upon awakening ( p > 0.05). Regarding attention, the girls had a longer reaction time in phasic alertness ( p < 0.01) and a tendency to have fewer errors in selective attention ( p = 0.06). These results persisted when controlled for sleep parameters. Therefore, we suggest that girls have a greater sleep need and less resistance to sleep deprivation, while the differences in attention performance could be due to different strategies, the girls could be making a trade, increasing reaction time in favor of better accuracy, while the boys could be prioritizing a faster response time.
