Abstract:Burnout is highly prevalent among physicians and is associated with negative patient outcomes. Furthermore, medical training is a particularly vulnerable time as studies show that medical students, residents, and fellows experience burnout and emotional exhaustion at higher rates than both the general population and physicians in practice. Multiple recent studies have demonstrated the practice of religion and spirituality to be protective against burnout in trainees. Can Catholic academic physicians transfer these protective benefits of religion and spirituality to their trainees, who are at the highest risk, and who may or may not share their faith? An ancient Catholic tradition, the Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy, may hold the key. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are listed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops as Counseling the Doubtful, Instructing the Ignorant, Admonishing the Sinner, Comforting the Sorrowful, Forgiving Injuries, Bearing Wrongs Patiently, and Praying for the Living and the Dead. Using this as a framework, examples of evidenced-based actions from the literature that have been shown to either prevent burnout or to improve the day-to-day experience of medical trainees were discussed. Examples include encouraging trainees to express doubts or to debrief after difficult and saddening cases. Academic physicians can provide instruction, feedback, or admonishment; demonstrate forgiveness of errors; and model the way in bearing wrongs patiently, all while uplifting their trainees in prayer. The Spiritual Works of Mercy can thus become a framework for academic physicians to uplift their trainees’ spirits and potentially prevent against burnout. Summary: Burnout is highly prevalent in medical students and in doctors during their residency or fellowship training, but multiple studies have shown regular practice of religion and spirituality to be protective against burnout. The Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy (Counsel the Doubtful, Instruct the Ignorant, Admonish the Sinner, Comfort the Sorrowful, Forgive All Injuries, Bear Wrongs Patiently and Pray for the Living and the Dead) provide a framework of powerful examples for teaching physicians, particularly Catholic teaching physicians, to uplift their students and potentially transfer this benefit to reduce their students’ risk for burnout.

Abstract:This study addresses medical student burnout, the physical and emotional exhaustion experienced due to chronic stress, which is prevalent among medical students. The relationships between spirituality and personal well-being were assessed across the 4 years of a medical school in southeastern USA using the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey, World Health Organization Quality of Life-Spiritual, Religious, and Personal Beliefs Survey, and the narrative HOPE Spiritual Assessment Tool. The instruments measured exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy pertaining to medical students’ work environment as well as levels of spirituality extracted from facets such as personal practices, sources of hope and strength, and meaning and connection in the world. A significant inverse relationship was found between spirituality and exhaustion as well as spirituality and cynicism. Conversely, spirituality shared a significantly positive relationship with professional efficacy. A significantly higher level of exhaustion and cynicism and lower reported professional efficacy were found in M2 students compared to M4 students. Important sources of student support identified in thematic analysis of narrative were family, friends, a connection to God or a higher power, being part of a religious or spiritual community, prayer/meditation, music, and time spent outdoors. The data suggest that spirituality may be a protective coping tool against burnout in medical students; students nearing the end of pre-clerkship training were in the most need of coping resources. The integration of spirituality into medical school wellness programs may prove beneficial to students specifically before the stressful second year curriculum and can serve students well into their medical profession.
Discovering compassion in medical training: a qualitative study with curriculum leaders, educators, and learners

Abstract:Background: Compassion is considered a fundamental human capacity instrumental to the creation of medicine and for patient-centered practice and innovations in healthcare. However, instead of nurturing and cultivating institutional compassion, many healthcare providers cite the health system itself as a direct barrier to standard care. The trend of compassion depletion begins with medical students and is often attributed to the culture of undergraduate medical training, where students experience an increased risk of depression, substance use, and suicidality. Objectives: This qualitative study aims to develop a more comprehensive understanding of compassion as it relates to undergraduate medical education. We used focus groups with key stakeholders in medical education to characterize beliefs about the nature of compassion and to identify perceived barriers and facilitators to compassion within their daily responsibilities as educators and students. Methods: Researchers conducted a series of virtual (Zoom) focus groups with stakeholders: Students (N = 14), Small Group Advisors (N = 11), and Medical Curriculum Leaders (N = 4). Transcripts were thematically analyzed using MAXQDA software. Results: Study participants described compassion as being more than empathy, demanding action, and capable of being cultivated. Stakeholders identified self-care, life experiences, and role models as facilitators. The consistently identified barriers to compassion were time constraints, culture, and burnout. Both medical students and those training them agreed on a general definition of compassion and that there are ways to cultivate more of it in their daily professional lives. They also agreed that undergraduate medical education - and the healthcare culture at large - does not deliberately foster compassion and may be directly contributing to its degradation by the content and pedagogies emphasized, the high rates of burnout and futility, and the overwhelming time constraints. Discussion: Intentional instruction in and cultivation of compassion during undergraduate medical education could provide a critical first step for undergirding the professional culture of healthcare with more resilience and warm-hearted concern. Our finding that medical students and those training them agree about what compassion is and that there are specific and actionable ways to cultivate more of it in their professional lives highlights key changes that will promote a more compassionate training environment conducive to the experience and expression of compassion.

Abstract:THEORY: Empathy is one component of medical student education that may be important to nurture, but there are many potential psychological barriers to empathy, such as student depression, burnout, and low quality of life or wellness behaviors. However, few studies have addressed how positive behaviors such as wellness and spirituality, in combination with these barriers, might affect empathy.HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized a negative relationship between psychological distress and empathy, and a positive relationship between empathy and wellness behaviors. We also hypothesized that openness to others' spirituality would moderate the effects of psychological distress on empathy in medical students.METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 106 medical students in a public medical school in the U.S. Midwest. Mailed questionnaires collected student information on specialty choice and sociodemographics, empathy, spirituality openness, religiosity, wellness, burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted, with empathy as the dependent variable, psychological distress and all wellness behaviors as predictors, and spirituality openness as a moderator.RESULTS: Specialty choice, burnout, wellness behaviors, spirituality openness, and religiosity were significant independent predictors of empathy. In addition, when added singly, one interaction was significant: Spirituality Openness × Depression. Spirituality openness was related to empathy only in nondepressed students. Empathy of students with higher levels of depression was generally lower and not affected by spirituality openness.CONCLUSIONS: Nondepressed students who reported lower openness to spirituality might benefit most from empathy training, because these students reported the lowest empathy. Highly depressed or disengaged students may require interventions before empathy can be addressed. In addition, burnout was related to lower levels of empathy and wellness was related to higher levels. These provide potential points of intervention for medical schools developing tools to increase medical trainees' empathy levels.

Wellness Curriculum in the Pediatric Clerkship

Abstract:Psychological distress leading to burnout is an important issue during medical school. While studies have researched interventions in the pre-clerkship years, very few have targeted the clerkship years. To improve the wellness of third year medical students, the following interventions were implemented: (1) prompted students to identify two wellness goals in the areas of personal and physical well-being and (2) encouraged students to participate in meditation and chair yoga sessions during their pediatrics clerkship. Students completed pre- and post-clerkship wellness surveys. The interventions led to a small but significant improvement in the wellness of students, particularly in mental, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.Further expansion of a wellness curriculum to all clerkships during the entire third and fourth years may result in reduced burnout and sustained improvements in wellness during post graduate training and practice.

Abstract:Nurses and health care professionals should have an active role in meeting the spiritual needs of patients in collaboration with the family and the chaplain. Literature criticizes the impaired holistic care because the spiritual dimension is often overlooked by health care professionals. This could be due to feelings of incompetence due to lack of education on spiritual care; lack of inter-professional education (IPE); work overload; lack of time; different cultures; lack of attention to personal spirituality; ethical issues and unwillingness to deliver spiritual care. Literature defines spiritual care as recognizing, respecting, and meeting patients’ spiritual needs; facilitating participation in religious rituals; communicating through listening and talking with clients; being with the patient by caring, supporting, and showing empathy; promoting a sense of well-being by helping them to find meaning and purpose in their illness and overall life; and referring them to other professionals, including the chaplain/pastor. This paper outlines the systematic mode of intra-professional theoretical education on spiritual care and its integration into their clinical practice; supported by role modeling. Examples will be given from the author’s creative and innovative ways of teaching spiritual care to undergraduate and post-graduate students. The essence of spiritual care is being in doing whereby personal spirituality and therapeutic use of self contribute towards effective holistic care. While taking into consideration the factors that may inhibit and enhance the delivery of spiritual care, recommendations are proposed to the education, clinical, and management sectors for further research and personal spirituality to ameliorate patient holistic care.
Assessment of Student Perspectives on Improving Wellness in Medical School: Qualitative Results from a Cross-Sectional Survey of Medical Students in Florida

Abstract:Purpose: Helping medical students maintain wellbeing has become an important concern, as many medical students report a decline in their mental health during the course of their training. To improve students' wellbeing, some schools have implemented wellness programs into their curricula. While there is growing research about the effectiveness of these programs, little is known about what medical students themselves desire to support their wellbeing. This study aimed to assess medical student perspectives regarding the most effective ways to promote wellness during medical school. Participants and methods: To address this gap in the literature, a survey was administered to medical students at the nine medical schools in the state of Florida. Participants included 864 medical students, whose anonymous responses were analyzed descriptively as well as qualitatively to determine major themes. Results: Students provided novel suggestions and recommendations, including ideas for curricular additions and changes, cultural changes within schools, promoting positive behaviors and extracurricular activities, and providing resources for students. Conclusion: Based on the participants' responses, it is evident that wellness is an important issue to medical students and, given the variety of suggestions, schools should strongly consider what wellness changes to implement and whether participation in them should be mandatory. The results of this study will be a resource to medical schools and educators who are considering curricular changes to address medical student wellbeing.

Abstract:ISSUE: Burnout in graduate medical education is pervasive and has a deleterious impact on career satisfaction, personal well-being, and patient outcomes. Interventions in residency programs have often addressed isolated contributors to burnout; however, a more comprehensive framework for conceptualizing wellness is needed.EVIDENCE: In this article the authors propose Maslow's hierarchy of human needs (physiologic, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization) as a potential framework for addressing wellness initiatives. There are numerous contributors to burnout among physician-trainees, and programs to combat burnout must be equally multifaceted. A holistic approach, considering both the trainees personal and professional needs, is recommended. Maslow's Needs can be adapted to create such a framework in graduate medical education. The authors review current evidence to support this model.IMPLICATIONS: This work surveys current interventions to mitigate burnout and organizes them into a scaffold that can be used by residency programs interested in a complete framework to supporting wellness.

Trends in medical students' stress, physical, and emotional health throughout training

Abstract:Background: Medical student wellness, including physical health, emotional health, and levels of perceived stress, appears to decline during training, with students reporting high levels of depression, anxiety, and burnout as early as the first year of medical school. The impact of curricular changes on health and stress remains unclear, and a modified curriculum that compresses training of the foundational sciences and its effect on wellness has not been studied. Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine has recently instituted a unique competency-based model, which provides an important opportunity to assess the effects of curricular change on student wellness.Objective: Assess the effects of curricular change on student wellness.Design: Medical students at a single institution were administered the SF-8, an 8-item health-related quality of life survey, as well as the Perceived Stress Scale, a 10-item scale that measures the degree to which life situations are appraised as stressful, at baseline (matriculation) and at the end of Year 1, 2 and 3. Individual variables were assessed over time, as well as a trend analysis of summary domain scores over the 4 time periods.Results: Physical, emotional, and overall health were highest at baseline and lowest at the end of Year 1, after which they improved but never again reached baseline levels. Physical health declined less than emotional health. Perceived stress levels did not change over time but remained moderately high. There were no differences in health or perceived stress based on demographic variables.Conclusions: In a competency-based curriculum, physical, emotional and overall health significantly worsened during Year 1 but improved thereafter, while perceived stress remained unchanged. Early in training, stress and poor overall health may be related to concerns about self-efficacy and workload. Although advanced students show improved wellness, concerns remained about emotional difficulties, such as anxiety and irritability, and feeling a lack of control.
Compassion cultivation training promotes medical student wellness and enhanced clinical care

Abstract:BackgroundCompassionate health care is associated with positive patient outcomes. Educational interventions for medical students that develop compassion may also increase wellness, decrease burnout, and improve provider-patient relationships. Research on compassion training in medical education is needed to determine how students learn and apply these skills. The authors evaluated an elective course for medical students modeled after the Compassion Cultivation Training course developed by the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. The elective goals were to strengthen student compassion, kindness, and wellness through compassion training and mindfulness meditation training modeled by a faculty instructor. The research objectives were to understand students' applications and perceptions of this training.MethodsOver three years, 45 students participated in the elective at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The course administered a pre/post Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills that measured observing, describing, acting with awareness, and accepting without judgment. Qualitative analyses of self-reported experiences were used to assess students' perceptions of compassion training and their application of skills learned through the elective.ResultsThe mindfulness inventory showed significant improvements in observing (t = 3.62, p = 0.005) and accepting without judgment skills (t = 2.87, p = 0.017) for some elective cohorts. Qualitative data indicated that students across all cohorts found the elective rewarding, and they used mindfulness, meditation, and compassion skills broadly outside the course. Students described how the training helped them address major stressors associated with personal, academic, and clinical responsibilities. Students also reported that the skills strengthened interpersonal interactions, including with patients.ConclusionsThese outcomes illuminate students' attitudes toward compassion training and suggest that among receptive students, a brief, student-focused intervention can be enthusiastically received and positively influence students' compassion toward oneself and others. To underscore the importance of interpersonal and cognitive skills such as compassion and mindfulness, faculty should consider purposefully modeling these skills to students. Modeling compassion cultivation and mindfulness skills in the context of patient interactions may address student empathy erosion more directly than stress management training alone. This pilot study shows compassion training could be an attractive, efficient option to address burnout by simultaneously promoting student wellness and enhanced patient interactions.

Medical students' perspectives on a longitudinal wellness curriculum: a qualitative investigation

Abstract:Introduction: There is growing concern about the mental health status of medical students. Medical students are at a higher risk for depression, anxiety, and burnout than non-medical students. The Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Office of Medical Learner Affairs at McGill University developed a Longitudinal Wellness Curriculum (LWC) to foster medical students' well-being, self-care, and adaptability. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study to explore students' experiences with the LWC. We conducted three semi-structured focus groups involving a total of 11 medical students. We used thematic framework analysis for data analysis. Results: We found four main themes related to participants' engagement with the curriculum: 1) diverse perceptions on curriculum relevance and helpfulness; 2) the benefits of experiential sessions, role model speakers, and supportive staff; 3) insights on student-friendly curriculum scheduling; and 4) the importance of wellness education and systemic interventions in medical education. Conclusions: Most participants found the curriculum valuable and supported its integration into the academic curriculum. Experiential and active learning, diverse approaches to wellness, small group sessions, role modeling, and student-centered approaches were preferred methods. Inconvenient curriculum scheduling and skepticism over system-level support were seen as barriers to curriculum engagement and uptake. The findings of our study contribute to the development and implementation of wellness curriculum efforts in medical education.

Abstract:Over the next 10 years (1994-2004), NASA plans to launch several satellites for studying Earth's ecosystems. This Earth Observing System is expected to provide about a terabyte of data per day. The authors have worked with Earth scientists at NASA Ames to encode the selection and preparation of this data as an AI-based planning task. They extended a domain independent planner called Collage, to meet the requirements of this domain, and are building a prototype application that selects and prepares data for ecosystem models. Collage is a successor to the Gemplan planner. Both systems were designed for large, complex planning domains and have been applied to standard toy problems as well as more realistic domains, such as building-construction planning. Two features distinguish Collage from other domain-independent planners. First, instead of state-based planning algorithms, Collage uses a broad repertoire of domain independent, action-based plan-construction algorithms. It can also be extended to include new planning methods, including domain-specific ones. Second, Collage uses localized search: using information about domain structure, the planner partitions a potentially intractable, global search space into smaller, more manageable ones, each working on a local subproblem of the overall task.<<ETX>>
Enriching Spiritual Care in Medical Residents Through Cultural Humility and Courage

Abstract:Introduction: While many patients desire spiritual care, it is infrequently provided by physicians. When a model of cultural humility and courage is employed, resident physicians can be introduced to the spiritual care of patients. Methods: We developed this 90-minute, onetime session to speak directly to resident physicians about the relationships between medicine and spirituality and the nature of spiritual care. In the session, we facilitated residents in reflecting on their current posture toward spiritual care while addressing its evidence, obstacles, and timing. We also discussed the need for cultural humility and courage as we followed spiritual care to its root: guiding a person in finding meaning in their current circumstances. Results: We presented this interactive session to 35 internal medicine residents from all four training years. All residents responded to an embedded pre- and postsurvey question modeled after four attitudes towards spiritual care: rejecting, guarded, pragmatic, and embracing. Out of 22 residents who did not report embracing spiritual care in the presession survey, 10 (45%) reported a more positive attitude toward spiritual care on their postcourse surveys. Twenty-seven residents in attendance (77%) also provided feedback about presentation quality, with a mean rating of 4.7 out of 5 indicating overall satisfaction. Discussion: A single well-received session on spiritual care for medical residents models the integration of relevant spiritual care curricula into residency training. The resulting module can be modified for physicians of any specialty or seniority and complemented by other skill-based spiritual care curricula.

Abstract:The "hidden curriculum" in medical school includes a stressful work environment, un‐empathic role models, and prioritisation of biomedical knowledge. It can provoke anxiety and cause medical students to adapt by becoming cynical, distanced and less empathic. Lower empathy, in turn, has been shown to harm patients as well as practitioners. Fortunately, evidence‐based interventions can counteract the empathy dampening effects of the hidden curriculum. These include early exposure to real patients, providing students with real‐world experiences, training role models, assessing empathy training, increasing the focus on the biopsychosocial model of disease, and enhanced wellbeing education. Here, we provide an overview of these interventions. Taken together, they can bring about an "empathic hidden curriculum" which can reverse the decline in medical student empathy.

Exploring the cultivation of psychological resilience in medical students from the perspective of doctor-patient relationship

Abstract:The current medical model has transitioned from the original biomedical treatment model to a bio-psycho-social model, where patients now have higher demands for service awareness. Consequently, doctor-patient relationships have become a crucial aspect of the contemporary medical process. Currently, psychological resilience among medical students in China tends to be at a moderately lower level. Medical students often exhibit poor psychological qualities in handling contradictions in doctor-patient relationships. Moreover, there is a lack of emphasis on the education of corresponding psychological qualities for medical students during the teaching process. This deficiency is highly disadvantageous for medical students in their future management of doctor-patient relationships. The article explores how to cultivate psychological resilience in medical students and enhance their ability to handle conflicts in doctor-patient relationships from the perspective of doctor-patient relationships. The author suggests that schools should place greater emphasis on the psychological resilience of medical students, change teaching methods, incorporate online education to enhance the mentalization level of medical students, and propose an eight-week mindfulness cognitive therapy program to improve psychological resilience. The intervention process should consider establishing positive coping mechanisms, promoting good interpersonal relationships among medical students, and regulating individual negative emotions. Through simulating doctor-patient scenarios, teachers should consciously train the psychological resilience of medical students, improve their cognition and thinking abilities, and accelerate their psychological health recovery.
Addressing the physician burnout epidemic with resilience curricula in medical education: a systematic review

Abstract:Abstract Background A variety of stressors throughout medical education have contributed to a burnout epidemic at both the undergraduate medical education (UGME) and postgraduate medical education (PGME) levels. In response, UGME and PGME programs have recently begun to explore resilience-based interventions. As these interventions are in their infancy, little is known about their efficacy in promoting trainee resilience. This systematic review aims to synthesize the available research evidence on the efficacy of resilience curricula in UGME and PGME. Methods We performed a comprehensive search of the literature using MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Educational Resources Information Centre (ERIC), and Education Source from their inception to June 2020. Studies reporting the effect of resilience curricula in UGME and PGME settings were included. A qualitative analysis of the available studies was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I Tool. Results Twenty-one studies met the inclusion criteria. Thirteen were single-arm studies, 6 quasi-experiments, and 2 RCTs. Thirty-eight percent (8/21; n = 598) were implemented in UGME, while 62 % (13/21, n = 778) were in PGME. There was significant heterogeneity in the duration, delivery, and curricular topics and only two studies implemented the same training model. Similarly, there was considerable variation in curricula outcome measures, with the majority reporting modest improvement in resilience, while three studies reported worsening of resilience upon completion of training. Overall assessment of risk of bias was moderate and only few curricula were previously validated by other research groups. Conclusions Findings suggest that resilience curricula may be of benefit to medical trainees. Resilience training is an emerging area of medical education that merits further investigation. Additional research is needed to construct optimal methods to foster resilience in medical education.

Abstract:The patient-physician relationship, especially in the case of severely ill patients, is often fraught with anxiety, grief, and guilt in the physician who may come to feel that he or she has failed the patient and thereby becomes a "second victim." This notion was first explored in a 1973 publication (Artiss and Levine N Engl J Med 288(23):1210-4, 1973) that described a novel interactive seminar series for oncology fellows that had been designed to address and possibly remedy the frequent disquiet experienced by young physicians in this setting. Fifty years later, the medical student co-authors of this Perspective enrolled in an elective course that comprised a similar series of interactive seminars, now addressing the contemporary patient-physician relationship. The earlier paper was employed as a historical background, and the framework of the course then broadened such that the students considered the current environmental changes in medical practice (social, cultural, financial, legal, policy) that may be linked to the character of individual patient-physician relationships. This essay reports on the students' perception of such relationships, and on the environmental elements that may be helpful or harmful to the well-being of both patients and physicians.

Beyond burnout: a four-year survey of osteopathic medical student mental health and the implications for the development of wellness and mental health programs

Abstract:Context: The mental health crisis in medicine cannot be explained by burnout alone. Physicians are not immune to this crisis and are known to have higher rates of suicide and depression than the general population. A high prevalence of mental health symptoms has been observed in early medical training. Objectives: This study was completed to characterize medical students' mental well-being and provide guidance for timely intervention. Methods: An annual prospective, voluntary, anonymous, cross-sectional survey of medical students was completed over a 4-year period in medical school from 2016 to 2019. The survey was created based on standardized psychiatric screening tools assessing symptoms of depression, anxiety, burnout, and sleep problems. In each of those years, 1,257 (2016), 1,254 (2017), 1,221 (2018), and 1,220 (2019) enrolled students, respectively, were invited to participate. Data on students' mental health were analyzed in relation to their year of school separately for each survey year utilizing SAS 9.4. Results: A total of 973 students in 2016, 889 students in 2017, 547 students in 2018, and 606 students in 2019 participated in the study. For depression and burnout subscales, an increase in symptom scores were observed every survey year (2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019) by the second or third year of medical school with a clinically significant effect size. Persistently high levels of anxiety were observed throughout medical school, with significant increases after the first year noted in the 2016 and 2017 surveys, but not in the 2018 or 2019 surveys. Similarly, significant changes in sleep disturbance were found in the 2016 and 2017 surveys, but not in 2018 or 2019. Conclusions: Symptoms of burnout, depression, and anxiety were observed throughout all four years of medical school, with increases starting after the first year. Early intervention is needed to support students' mental health and increase access to care and resources.
The state of wellbeing education across North American medical schools: a scoping review

Abstract:Background/objective: Medical students experience increased rates of burnout and mental illness compared to the general population. Yet, it is unclear to what extent North American medical schools have adopted formal wellbeing curricula. We sought to establish prevailing themes of existing wellbeing educational interventions to identify opportunities for further curricular development. Methods: We conducted a scoping review of the literature to identify wellbeing education programs implemented for undergraduate medical students across North America. We searched four comprehensive databases and grey literature and only included published original research. Two independent researchers screened all papers, with a third resolving disagreements. Two researchers conducted the data extraction using a continuously refined template, with a third researcher resolving any discrepancies. Results: We identified 3996 articles in the initial search of which 30 met inclusion criteria and were included for further analysis. The most common types of interventions were mindfulness and meditation practices. 27 studies found that their wellbeing sessions contributed to positive wellbeing outcomes of learners. Conclusions: Our review identified that there are few wellbeing curricular initiatives that have been evaluated and published in the literature. Additionally, the methodology and rigour of wellbeing curriculum evaluation to date leaves significant room for improvement. The existing literature does suggest that the adoption of a wellbeing curriculum has the potential to improve outcomes for medical students. These findings can be used to assist the development of a validated wellbeing curricular framework for wellbeing initiatives. However, while such a curriculum may represent an effective tool in enhancing medical trainee wellbeing, it cannot effect change in isolation; lasting and meaningful change will require concurrent shifts within the broader systemic framework and cultural fabric of the medical education system.
