Abstract:It is been widely reported that plasmonic effects in metallic nanomaterials can enhance light trapping in organix solar cells (OSCs). However, typical nanoparticles (NP) of high quality (i.e., mono-dispersive) only possess a single resonant absorption peak, which inevitably limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement to a narrow spectral range. Broadband plasmonic absorption is obviously highly desirable. In this paper, a combination of Ag nanomaterials of different shapes, including nanoparticles and nanoprisms, is proposed for this purpose. The nanomaterials are synthesized using a simple wet chemical method. Theoretical and experimental studies show that the origin of the observed PCE enhancement is the simultaneous excitation of many plasmonic low- and high-order resonances modes, which are material-, shape-, size-, and polarization-dependent. Particularly for the Ag nanoprisms studied here, the high-order resonances result in higher contribution than low-order resonances to the absorption enhancement of OSCs through an improved overlap with the active material absorption spectrum. With the incorporation of the mixed nanomaterials into the active layer, a wide-band absorption improvement is demonstrated and the short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) improves by 17.91%. Finally, PCE is enhanced by 19.44% as compared to pre-optimized control OSCs. These results suggest a new approach to achieve higher overall enhancement through improving broadband absorption.

Abstract:To enhance the light trapping of organic solar cells (OSCs), metallic (e.g. Au, Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) have been incorporated into the polymer layers conveniently in solution process. Although power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OSCs has been shown to improve by incorporating metallic NPs in either the buffer layer such as poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) :poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)[1] or the active layer[2], the understanding on the changes is still not quite clear. Moreover, there are very limited studies on incorporating metallic NPs in more than one organic layer and investigating their effects on the optical and electrical properties as well as the performances of OSCs. In this work, monofunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-capped Au NPs of sizes 18 nm and 35 nm are doped in the PEDOT:PSS and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) layers respectively, leading to an improvement of PCE by ~22% compared to the optimized control device. We will firstly identify the impact of NPs in each polymer layer on OSC characteristics by doping Au NPs in either the PEDOT:PSS or P3HT:PCBM layer. Then, we will investigate Au NPs incorporated in all polymer layers. We demonstrate that the accumulated benefits of incorporating Au NPs in all organic layers of OSCs can achieve larger improvements in OSC performances.
Plasmonic Electrically Functionalized TiO2 for High‐Performance Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Optical effects of the plasmonic structures and the materials effects of the metal nanomaterials have recently been individually studied for enhancing performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, the effects of plasmonically induced carrier generation and enhanced carrier extraction of the carrier transport layer (i.e., plasmonic‐electrical effects) in OSCs are investigated. Enhanced charge extraction in TiO2 as a highly efficient electron transport layer by the incorporation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is proposed and demonstrated. Efficient device performance is demonstrated by using Au NPs incorporated TiO2 at a plasmonic wavelength (560–600 nm), which is far longer than the originally necessary UV light. By optimizing the concentration ratio of the Au NPs in the NP‐TiO2 composite, the performances of OSCs with various polymer active layers are enhanced and efficiency of 8.74% is reached. An integrated optical and electrical model, which takes into account plasmonic‐induced hot carrier tunneling probability and extraction barrier between TiO2 and the active layer, is introduced. The enhanced charge extraction under plasmonic illumination is attributed to the strong charge injection of plasmonically excited electrons from NPs into TiO2. The mechanism favors trap filling in TiO2, which can lower the effective energy barrier and facilitate carrier transport in OSCs.

Abstract:We demonstrate efficiency improvement in polymer solar cells (PSCs) by ∼22% through incorporating Au nanoparticles (NPs) into all polymer layers. Au NPs are found to have distinct mechanisms in improving device performance when incorporated in different polymer layers. Au NPs in poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) mainly contribute to better hole collection while Au NPs in active layer contributes to the enhanced optical absorption and more balanced charge-transport. Our theoretical result shows that the absorption enhancement at the active layer is attributed to plasmon resonances with strong near-field distributions penetrated into absorption polymers. These findings can be applied to design high-efficiency metallic NPs-incorporated PSCs.
Efficient Inverted Polymer Solar Cells with Directly Patterned Active Layer and Silver Back Grating

Abstract:We have investigated the effects of a directly patterned active layer together with silver nanograting arrays as the anode of inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs). The patterned nanostructure not only greatly enhances the light absorption of the active layer through both light diffraction and coupling to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes but also obviously promotes the fill factor of the patterned device. The absorption spectrum shows improvement over a broad wavelength range, especially around the 400 nm region and the near-infrared region surrounding 700 nm, which can also be reconfirmed from Incident Photon to Electron Conversion Efficiency (IPCE) and zeroth-order reflection spectra. Most importantly, our physical study shows that the absorption peak of 400 nm is due to the resonant waveguide mode, and the absorption peak of 700 nm is attributed to the excited SPP mode induced by the metallic back grating. Besides, another splitting SPP mode, called plasmonic band edge, around 800 nm is clarified from our detailed model. Consequently, on one hand, our work offers the fundamental physical understanding of plasmonic band edge resonances in periodic grating nanostructures for enhancing the optical absorption of thin-film photovoltaics. On the other hand, the study contributes to improving the power conversion efficiency of inverted PSCs by about 19% through incorporating grating structures that can be a potential candidate for improving the performances of other PSCs.
Influence of Geometry of Metallic Nanoparticles on Absorption of Thin-Film Organic Solar Cells: A Critical Examination.

Abstract:Well-engineered light trapping designs will significantly improve power conversion efficiency of thin-film organic solar cells. Recently, metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used to concentrate sunlight in the active layer of OSCs. To critically examine the influence of geometry of metallic NPs on absorption of OSCs, the parallel finite-element method is applied to simulate the near-field multiple scattering effects in plasmonic NPs incorporated OSCs. The geometry-varied NPs including nano-cone, nano-inverted-cone, nano-cylinder, and nano-cuboid are systematically investigated. Furthermore, the absorption enhancement from the dielectric silicon NPs and perfectly reflecting NPs are also comprehensively offered. Compared to the off-plasmon resonance case, the absorption enhancement factor is higher for on-plasmon resonance case. However, the absorption of organic active material near plasmon resonance weakly contributes to exciton generation. Moreover, the height-dependent Fabry-Perot mode plays a key role in the light trapping off the plasmon resonance. Additionally, the tapered structure of the silver nano-cone, which leads to the best absorption enhancement of 3 at the wavelength of 680 nm, since it can reduce unwanted reflection loss and achieve broadband plasmonic resonance simultaneously.

Abstract:Dual plasmonic metallic nanostructures in organic solar cells are demonstrated by simultaneously incorporating gold nanoparticles (NPs) into the active layer and fabricating the silver nanograting electrode by means of a vacuum-assisted nanoimprinting method. Abstract:We present designs of organic solar cells (OSCs) incorporating periodically arranged gradient type active layer. The designs can enhance light harvesting with patterned organic materials themselves (i.e. self-enhanced active layer design) to avoid degrading electrical performances of OSCs in contrast to introducing inorganic concentrators into OSC active layers such as silicon and metallic nanostructures. Geometry of the OSC is fully optimized by rigorously solving Maxwell's equations with fast and efficient scattering matrix method. Optical absorption is accessed by a volume integral of the active layer excluding the metallic absorption. Our numerical results show that the OSC with a self-enhanced active layer, compared with the conventional planar active layer configuration, has broadband and wide-angle range absorption enhancement due to better geometric impedance matching and prolonged optical path. This work provides a theoretical foundation and engineering reference for high performance OSC designs.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently attracted considerable research interest. For typical OSCs, it is highly desirable to have optically thick and physically thin thickness for strong light absorption and efficient carrier collection respectively. In the meantime, most organic semiconductors have short exciton diffusion length and low carrier mobility [1-3]. As a consequence, the active layers of OSCs are generally thin with a thickness of a few hundred nanometers to ensure the efficient extraction of carriers, hence limiting the total absorption of incident light. Optimizing both the optical and electrical (i.e., multi-physical) properties of OSCs is in demands for rationally designed device architectures. Plasmonic nanomaterials (e.g., metallic nanoparticles [4-6], nanorods [7, 8], nanoprisms [9, 10], etc.) have recently been introduced into different layers of multilayered solar cells to achieve highly efficient light harvesting. The multilayered solar cells structures commonly have active layer, carrier (electron and hole) transport layer and electrode (anode and cathode). Through the localized plasmonic resonances (LPRs) [11-16] from metallic nanomaterials, very strong near-fields will be generated, which can provide a large potential for enhancing optical absorption in the multilayered OSCs. Besides the optical effects, it has been reported that metallic nanomaterials can modify the morphology, interface properties as well as the electrical properties of OSCs which will significantly modify the performances of OSCs [17-23]. In this article, the effects of various optical resonance mechanisms and the theoretical studies of the multi-physical properties of OSCs will be reviewed. Meanwhile, the experimental optical and electrical effects of metallic nanomaterials incorporated in different layers of OSCs will be studied. The morphology and interface effects of metallic nanomaterials in the carrier transport layers on the performances of OSCs will also be described.

Abstract:The effects of Au nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated into the active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs) with a newly synthesized donor polymer are investigated in detail. Our work shows that localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) introduced by the metallic NPs can experimentally and theoretically enhance the light absorption in the active layer of PSCs because the strong LSPR near field mainly distributes laterally along the active layer. The understanding can be applied to other metallic NP incorporated organic solar cells. Meanwhile, our results show that electrical properties can counter-diminish the optical enhancement from LSPR and thus reduce the overall performance improvement. It is important that both optical and electrical properties need to be studied and optimized simultaneously for achieving improved power conversion efficiency. The study contributes to better understanding the uses of Au NPs for enhancing PSC performances.

Abstract:We investigate near-field multiple scattering effects of plasmonic nanospheres (NSPs) embedded into organic solar cells (OSCs). When NSPs are embedded into a spacer layer, the near-field scattering from the NSPs shows strong direction-dependent features, which significantly affects the optical absorption. When NSPs are embedded into an active layer, the absorption enhancement is attributed to the interplay between longitudinal and transverse modes supported by the NSP chain. The breakdown of electrostatic scaling law is confirmed by our theoretical model and should be accounted for optical designs of OSCs. The work provides the fundamental physical understanding and design guidelines for plasmonic photovoltaics.
Enhanced charge extraction in organic solar cells through electron accumulation effects induced by metal nanoparticles

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) have been used to enhance the performance of thin-filmdevices such as organic photovoltaics. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate electron extraction enhancement induced by charge accumulation effects of metal NPs. The metal NPs (Au and Ag NPs) are embedded in a titanium oxide (TiO2) layer, functioning as a highly efficient transport layer for improving the performances of inverted organic solar cells (OSCs), which leads to significantly increased photocurrent and power conversion efficiency reaching 8.20%. Importantly, our results show that the optical plasmonic effect of metal NPs (Au NPs and Ag NPs) in the electron transport layer is a minor factor in improving the OSCs' efficiency. Instead, the charge extraction enhancement under solar illumination can be explained by the transfer of UV-excited electrons from the TiO2 electron transport layer to metal NPs and the enhanced accumulation of the electrons in metal NPs-TiO2 composites. The electron accumulation reduces the work function of the electron transport composite layer after UV illumination. The redistribution of charges in the UV-irradiated metal NPs-TiO2 system can assist the charge extraction in OSCs. Multiphysics study is also conducted to explain the effects of the charge accumulation on device performances (i.e. improving short-circuit current without degrading the open-circuit voltage). Consequently, by incorporation of metal NPs, our experimental and theoretical results show that the NPs-TiO2 transport layer, in which case the effect of doping is different from the conventional doping effects in semiconductors, exhibits very good charge extraction and collection at the electrode for efficient organic optoelectronic devices.
Enhanced Near-Infrared Photoresponse for Efficient Organic Solar Cells Using Hybrid Plasmonic Nanostructures

Abstract:Nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently made remarkable progress as one of the most promising next-generation photovoltaic technologies. Still, it is highly desirable to enhance the light harvesting for the sake of photoactive layer with a limited thickness. In this work, we developed efficient nonfullerene OSCs through incorporating hybrid plasmonic metal nanostructures (MNS) consisted of gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) and gold nanospheres (AuNSs). The synergistic localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of hybrid MNS has been predesigned to perfectly match with the absorption range of nonfullerene photoactive layer especially in the near-infrared (NIR) region, subsequently delivering enhanced light harvesting and photo-response. The plasmonic enhancement mechanisms were systematically investigated by theoretical simulations and various experimental measurements, showing that hybrid MNS exhibited significant broadband near field enhancement and scattering effect as well as the advantage in electrical aspect to facilitate the charge extraction and transport. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was improved from 15.46% to 16.62% for OSCs based on PM6:Y6 due to the synergistic plasmonic effect of hybrid MNS. Overall, this work paves the way for using plasmonic MNS with tunable optical properties as an alternative approach for the development of high-performance OSCs.
Plasmonic Ag@Oxide Nanoprisms for Enhanced Performance of Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), light scattering, and lowering the series resistance of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) provide positive effect on the performance of photovoltaic device. However, the exciton recombination on the noble metal NPs accompanying above influences will deteriorate the performance of device. In this report, surface-modified Ag@oxide (TiO2 or SiO2 ) nanoprisms with 1-2 nm shell thickness are developed. The thin film composed of P3HT/Ag@oxides and P3HT:PCBM/Ag@oxides is investigated by absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and transient absorption spectroscopy. The results show a significant absorption, PL enhancement, and long-lived photogenerated polaron in the P3HT/Ag@TiO2 film, indicating the increase of photogenerated exciton population by LSPR of Ag nanoprisms. In the case of P3HT/Ag nanoprisms, partial PL quench and relatively short-lived photogenerated polaron are observed. That indicates that the oxides layer can effectively avoid the exciton recombination. When the Ag@oxide nanoprisms are introduced into the active layer of P3HT:PCBM photovoltaic devices, about 31% of power conversion efficiency enhancement is obtained relative to the reference cell. All these results indicate that Ag@oxides can enhance the performance of the cell, at the same time the ultrathin oxide shell prevents from the exciton recombination.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are becoming a promising candidate for next-generation photovoltaic cells due to their attractive power conversion efficiency (PCE). Plasmonic enhancement is regarded as an optical tuning approach for further improving the PCE of single-junction PSCs toward Shockley-Queisser limit. Herein, we introduce molecularly isolated gold nanorods (Au NRs), bearing relatively stronger scattering ability and localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) effect, in the rear side of perovskites in PSCs, for promoting light harvesting and for electrical enhancement. Owing to the larger refractive index and better matched energy level alignment, the 4-mercaptobenzoic acid molecules coated on Au NRs prove to play important dual roles: isolating the metallic Au NRs from contacting with perovskite, and facilitating more efficient charge separation and transport across the interface under the synergetic LSPR effect of Au NRs. Our work highlights the capability of the plasmonic approach by nanorods and by molecular isolation, extending nanoparticle-based plasmonic approaches, toward highly efficient plasmon-enhanced PSCs.

Abstract:There are numerous potential benefits associated with organic solar cells (OSCs), such as their cost-effectiveness and ease of fabrication on flexible substrates, along with the ability to tailor their molecular properties for specific applications. Consequently, OSCs are viewed as a promising next-generation photovoltaic technology, with significant advancements being made in this field. Nevertheless, due to their limited thickness, the active layer still struggles to efficiently capture light for high-performance OSCs. Various OSCs have integrated plasmonic nanostructures to enhance light absorption and improve charge generation and collection. Diverse plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs), including gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) of varying shapes and sizes, have been incorporated at different locations within the OSC layer to enhance light absorption, facilitate the generation of electron-hole pairs, and enable the transport of free charge carriers, ultimately boosting the photocurrent in OSCs. This review delves into recent studies on how the shape and size of Au and Ag NPs impact the power conversion efficiencies of OSCs when integrated into different layers of the device. Furthermore, the potential applications of plasmonic nanoparticles beyond light trapping are explored. The analyzed literature indicates that smaller NPs enhance light absorption in the absorber layer due to local field enhancement, while larger NPs scatter light due to their larger scattering cross-sections. Consequently, small nanoparticles are more effective when utilized in the active layer, whereas larger nanoparticles are more effective when incorporated outside the active layer. The challenge in utilizing Au and Ag NPs lies in the necessity for specific electric field strengths at low and high energies, respectively, which can complicate the use of either Au or Ag or a combination of both. It is essential to establish a framework for MNP that covers a broad LSPR spectrum and exhibits a robust scattering capability, particularly for extended wavelengths.

Abstract:Solution-processing thin-film solar techniques, such as organic solar cells (OSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PeSCs), hold great promise as cost-effective renewable energy sources with feasible large-scale manufacturing. However, these devices are suffering from the incomplete photon absorption and thereby cannot unlock the full potential of device efficiency despite their rapid development in recent decades. Incorporation of plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs) into the thin active layers has been considered as a breakthrough strategy to solve this inherent limit and represent an imperative milestone toward the highly efficient OSCs and PeSCs, arising from the significantly enhanced light absorption and electrical characteristics in fundamental. Herein, the recent advances in fabrication and incorporation strategies of plasmonic NPs are reviewed. The in-depth efficiency and stability enhancement mechanisms are investigated and highlighted. Meanwhile, potential strategies and perspectives for their further development of NP-based solution-processing OSCs and PeSCs are presented.
Improving the Light Harvest of Plasmonic Based Organic Solar Cells by Utilizing Dielectric Core–Shells

Abstract:The plasmonic properties of nanoparticles (NPs) such as silver (Ag) can be improved by utilizing core-shell materials in order to improve photon harvest in organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, we utilized four dielectric materials, namely TiO , SnO , ZnO, and SiO , to improve the near-field and far-field enhancement in addition to pushing the LSPR of Ag NPs to the visible region. The plasmon-assisted photon harvesting in P3HT:PCBM-based inverted organic solar cell (OSC) devices was investigated using a 70 nm silver nanosphere (Ag NS) coated with dielectrics. This study employed a 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for the analysis. The results show that the PCE of P3HT:PCBM could be enhanced by more than 26% when the NPs were embedded in the active layer due to the synergistic effect of near-field and far-field enhancement, with TiO that has a higher dielectric constant compared to others and bare Ag NPs. Furthermore, it was observed that backscattering as the dominant scattering mechanism could be used to improve the PCE of the device by about 10% when placed at the HTL/AL interface followed by ETL/AL (4%) while placing it at the ETL/ITO interface was found to reduce the PCE, attributed to its far distance from the active layer (AL) and the dominance of backward scattering.

Abstract:Silicon is the most widely used material for solar cells due to its abundance, non-toxicity, reliability, and mature fabrication process. In this paper, we fabricated silicon nanoholes (SiNHS)/gold nanoparticles (AuNPS)/organic hybrid solar cells and investigated their spectral and opto-electron conversion properties. SiNHS nanocomposite films were fabricated by metal-assisted electroless etching (EE) method. Then, we modified the surface of the nanocomposite films by exposing the samples in the air. After that, polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) blended with AuNPS were spin-coated on the surface of the SiNHS nanocomposite films as a hole-transporting layer. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) values of the solar cells with AuNPS are higher than that of the samples without AuNPS in the spectral region of 600–1000 nm, which were essential to achieve high performance photovoltaic cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the solar cells incorporating AuNPS exhibited an enhancement of 27 %, compared with that of the solar cells without AuNPS. We thought that the improved efficiency were attributed to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) triggered by gold nanoparticles in SiNHS nanocomposite films.

Abstract:Incorporating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into organic solar cell (OSC) structures provides an effective means to manipulate light–matter interactions. AuNPs have been used as plasmonic-enhancing and light-trapping materials in OSCs and exhibit diverse single and mixed morphologies. However, substantial near-field enhancement from metal periodic structures has consistently demonstrated high enhancement in solar cell efficiency. Additionally, coupling with atomic gold clusters in the form of gold quantum dots holds promise for light harvesting through fluorescent phenomena. Configured devices optimize light utilization in OSCs by considering factors such as the morphology, position, and hybridization of localized surface plasmon resonance, propagating surface plasmon resonance, and fluorescence phenomena. This optimization enhances light absorption, scattering, and efficient trapping facilitated by gold nanostructures/quantum dots. The configured setup exhibits multiple effects, concurrently improving plasmonic and fluorescence responses under solar irradiation, thereby enhancing energy conversion performance. Integrating plasmonic nanostructures with OSCs can address fundamental issues, providing opportunities to enhance light-absorption intensity and charge transfer efficiency at intra and intermolecular levels. This comprehensive review demonstrates that the greatest improvement in solar cell efficiency exceeded 30% compared with the reference cells.
