Abstract:The diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma requires the accurate classification of cervical squamous lesions in the ThinPrep cytologic test (TCT). It primarily relies on a pathologist's interpretation under a microscope. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) have played an increasingly important role in digital pathology. However, they have not been applied to diverse datasets and externally validated. In the present study, a DCNN model based on VGG16 and an ensemble training strategy (ETS) based on 5-fold cross-validation was employed to automatically classify normal and abnormal cervical squamous cells from a multi-center dataset. First, we collected a dataset comprising 82 TCT samples from four hospitals and fine-tuned our model twice on the dataset with and without the ETS. Then, we compared the classifications obtained from the models with those provided by two skilled pathologists to discriminate the performance of the models in terms of classification accuracy and efficiency. Finally, paired sample t-tests were used to validate the consistency between the classification provided by the proposed methods and that of the pathologists. The results showed that ETS slightly, though not significantly, improved the classification accuracy compared with that of the pathologists: P0=0.387>0.05 (DCNN without ETS vs. DCNN with ETS), P1=0.771>0.05 (DCNN with ETS vs. pathologist 1), P2=0.489>0.05 (DCNN with ETS vs. pathologist 2). The DCNN model was almost 6-fold faster than that of the pathologists. The accuracy of our automated scheme was similar to that of the pathologists, but a higher efficiency in the accurate identification of cervical squamous lesions was provided by the scheme. This result allows for wider and more efficient screening and may provide a replacement for pathologists in the future. Future research should address the viability of the practical implementation of such DCNN models in the laboratory setting.
TSO-DETR: A Network for Small Object Detection of Cervical Cells in TCT Smear

Abstract:Cervical cell detection, a crucial component in Thin-prep Cytologic Test (TCT) screening for early cervical cancer diagnosis, faces challenges due to the small size of abnormal cells. To address this issue, we propose a novel model, the TCT Small Object DEtection TRansformer (TSO-DETR). TSO-DETR incorporates two key techniques to improve detection performance. Firstly, a multi-scale approach is employed by integrating PVTv2 and Deformable DETR. This approach enhances the feature representation of small cervical cells by combining shallow and deep features from different scales. Secondly, a novel approach is utilized by combining Spatial Reconstruction Unit (SRU) with our proposed Mixture Channel Attention (MixCA). This combination enhances the feature extraction ability of the model from both spatial and channel dimensions. Notably, the introduction of MixCA enables the model to prioritize important image features, thereby reducing interference from background noise. Comparative experimental results demonstrate TSO-DETR’s superiority over other state-of-the-art methods in our TCT dataset, achieving 24.8% in mean Average Precision (mAP) and 50.5% in mean Average Recall (mAR). These results reflect improvements of 8.0 percentage points in mAP and 10.6 percentage points in mAR, respectively, over the second-best model. Abstract:Cervical cancer screening through cytopathological images poses a significant challenge due to the intricate nature of cancer cells, often resulting in high misdiagnosis rates. This study presents the Integrated Attention-Transformer System (IATS), a pioneering framework designed to enhance the precision and efficiency of cervical cancer cell image analysis, surpassing the capabilities of existing deep learning models. Instead of relying solely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), IATS leverages the power of transformers, a recently emerged architecture, to holistically capture both global and local features within the images. It employs a multi-pronged approach: Vision Transformer (ViT) module captures the overall spatial context and interactions between cells, providing a crucial understanding of potential cancer patterns. Token-to-token module zooms in on individual cells, meticulously examining subtle malignant features that might be missed by CNNs. SeNet integration with ResNet101 and DenseNet169 refines feature extraction by dynamically analyzing the importance of different features captured by these popular deep learning architectures. SeNet acts like a skilled analyst, prioritizing the most informative features for accurate cancer cell identification. Weighted voting combines the insights from each module, leading to robust and accurate identification, minimizing misdiagnosis risk. The proposed framework achieves an impressive accuracy of 98.44% on Mendeley dataset and 95.88% on SIPaKMeD dataset, outperforming 25 deep learning models, which included Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Vision Transformer (VT) models. These results reveal a 2.5% accuracy improvement compared to the best-performing CNN model on the Mendeley dataset. This significant advancement holds the potential to revolutionize cervical cancer screening by substantially reducing misdiagnosis rates and improving patient outcomes. While this study focuses on model performance, future work will explore its computational efficiency and real-world clinical integration to ensure its broader impact on patient care.

Abstract:Cervical cancer is the seventh most common cancer among all the cancers worldwide and the fourth most common cancer among women. Cervical cytopathology image classification is an important method to diagnose cervical cancer. Manual screening of cytopathology images is time-consuming and error-prone. The emergence of the automatic computer-aided diagnosis system solves this problem. This paper proposes a framework called CVM-Cervix based on deep learning to perform cervical cell classification tasks. It can analyze pap slides quickly and accurately. CVM-Cervix first proposes a Convolutional Neural Network module and a Visual Transformer module for local and global feature extraction respectively, then a Multilayer Perceptron module is designed to fuse the local and global features for the final classification. Experimental results show the effectiveness and potential of the proposed CVM-Cervix in the field of cervical Pap smear image classification. In addition, according to the practical needs of clinical work, we perform a lightweight post-processing to compress the model.

Abstract:<h3>Objectives</h3> In cervical cancer diagnosis, automatic classification and identification can effectively reduce the workload of radiologists and gynecologists. Due to that T2-MR and DWI-MR images are complementary in lesion information, it is necessary to combine medical images with the two modalities. In this study, we proposed a automatic classification pipeline for cervical cancer based on Swin-Transformer and verified the classification potential on multimodality. <h3>Methods</h3> Fitty-eight T2-MR images and eighty DWI-MR images of patients with cervical cancer were retrospectively enrolled. Totally 1858 slices were annotated by radiologists to four classes, including T2-tumor, T2-notumor, DWI-tumor and DWI-notumor. 1489 slices were used for training and 369 images for validation. In addition, images of ten patients containing 184 DWI slices and 200 T2 slices were not participated in modeling as test set. All the gray slices(512×512) with single channel were repeated to three channels and resized to 224×224 pixels. Finally, the mixed 1858 slices(892 DWI, 966 T2) were put into the classification network based on Swin-Transformer (optimizer: AdamW, batchsize = 8, lr = 0.0001). <h3>Results</h3> Four typical metrics were applied to evaluate the classification result, including accuracy, F1-score, sensitivity and specificity. Regarding to the 184 DWI test slices, the accuracy, F1-score, sensitivity, specificity were 91.85%, 90.15%, 88.52% and 93.50%, respectively. And the accuracy of 200 T2 test slices was 83.00% . Besides, there was no error in the distinguishment between the two modalities. <h3>Conclusions</h3> This work confirmed that the tumor of cervical cancer on multimodal MRI images can be automatically classified with high accuracy.

Abstract:Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women, and cytopathological images are often used to screen for this cancer. However, manual examination is very troublesome and the misdiagnosis rate is high. In addition, cervical cancer nest cells are denser and more complex, with high overlap and opacity, increasing the difficulty of identification. The appearance of the computer aided automatic diagnosis system solves this problem. In this paper, a weakly supervised cervical cancer nest image identification approach using Conjugated Attention Mechanism and Visual Transformer (CAM-VT), which can analyze pap slides quickly and accurately. CAM-VT proposes conjugated attention mechanism and visual transformer modules for local and global feature extraction respectively, and then designs an ensemble learning module to further improve the identification capability. In order to determine a reasonable interpretation, comparative experiments are conducted on our datasets. The average accuracy of the validation set of three repeated experiments using CAM-VT framework is 88.92%, which is higher than the optimal result of 22 well-known deep learning models. Moreover, we conduct ablation experiments and extended experiments on Hematoxylin and Eosin stained gastric histopathological image datasets to verify the ability and generalization ability of the framework. Finally, the top 5 and top 10 positive probability values of cervical nests are 97.36% and 96.84%, which have important clinical and practical significance. The experimental results show that the proposed CAM-VT framework has excellent performance in potential cervical cancer nest image identification tasks for practical clinical work.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Successful surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism (1 degree HPT) historically has required bilateral neck exploration. The intraoperative parathyroid hormone (IO-PTH) assay allows a more limited procedure by confirming complete removal of hypersecreting tissue. METHODS Plasma samples were obtained from 130 consecutive patients both before (preincision and preexcision baselines) and at approximately 5 and 10 minutes (and additional times) after removal of abnormal parathyroid tissue. Samples were assayed for IO-PTH by a rapid, two-site immunochemiluminescent assay (ICMA) with a 7-minute incubation at 45 degrees C. RESULTS Plasma IO-PTH decreased by at least 50% in 126 of 130 cases; however, three of these cases were false positives. The four cases in which IO-PTH fell < 50% were classified as two true negatives and two false negatives. A single adenoma was removed in 125 cases, and two or three hyperplastic glands were removed in five cases. CONCLUSIONS IO-PTH predicted the postoperative outcome in 125 of 130 cases (96.2%), including two of five cases in which multiple hyperplastic glands were removed, and 1 degree HPT was successfully treated in 97.7% (127/130) of the cases. The IO-PTH procedure can provide valuable confirmation to the endocrine surgeon; however, other sources of information must also be used to ensure that all hyperplastic glands are identified.

Abstract:Cervical cancer is a major global health issue, particularly in developing countries where access to healthcare is limited. Early detection of pre-cancerous lesions is crucial for successful treatment and reducing mortality rates. However, traditional screening and diagnostic processes require cytopathology doctors to manually interpret a huge number of cells, which is time-consuming, costly, and prone to human experiences. In this paper, we propose a Multi-scale Window Transformer (MWT) for cervical cytopathology image recognition. We design multi-scale window multi-head self-attention(MW-MSA) to simultaneously integrate cell features of different scales. Small window self-attention is used to extract local cell detail features, and large window self-attention aims to integrate features from smaller-scale window attention to achieve window-to-window information interaction. Our design enables long-range feature integration but avoids whole image self-attention(SA) in ViT or twice local window SA in Swin Transformer. We find convolutional feed-forward networks (CFFN) are more efficient than original MLP-based FFN for representing cytopathology images. Our overall model adopts a pyramid architecture. We establish two multi-center cervical cell classification datasets of two-category 192,123 images and four-category 174,138 images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our MWT outperforms state-of-the-art general classification networks and specialized classifiers for cytopathology images in the internal and external test sets. The results on large-scale datasets prove the effectiveness and generalization of our proposed model. Our work provides a reliable cytopathology image recognition method and helps establish computer-aided screening for cervical cancer. Multiple serous cavity effusion screening based on smear images using vision transformer

Abstract:Serous cavity effusion is a prevalent pathological condition encountered in clinical settings. Fluid samples obtained from these effusions are vital for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Traditionally, cytological examination of smears is a common method for diagnosing serous cavity effusion, renowned for its convenience. However, this technique presents limitations that can compromise its efficiency and diagnostic accuracy. This study aims to overcome these challenges and introduce an improved method for the precise detection of malignant cells in serous cavity effusions. We have developed a transformer-based classification framework, specifically employing the vision transformer (ViT) model, to fulfill this objective. Our research involved collecting smear images and corresponding cytological reports from 161 patients who underwent serous cavity drainage. We meticulously annotated 4836 patches from these images, identifying regions with and without malignant cells, thus creating a unique dataset for smear image classification. The findings of our study reveal that deep learning models, particularly the ViT model, exhibit remarkable accuracy in classifying patches as malignant or non-malignant. The ViT model achieved an impressive area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.99, surpassing the performance of the convolutional neural network (CNN) model, which recorded an AUROC of 0.86. Additionally, we validated our models using an external cohort of 127 patients. The ViT model sustained its high-level screening performance, achieving an AUROC of 0.98 at the patient level, compared to the CNN model's AUROC of 0.84. The visualization of our ViT models confirmed their capability to precisely identify regions containing malignant cells in multiple serous cavity effusion smear images. In summary, our study demonstrates the potential of deep learning models, particularly the ViT model, in automating the screening process for serous cavity effusions. These models offer significant assistance to cytologists in enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. The ViT model stands out for its advanced self-attention mechanism, making it exceptionally suitable for tasks that necessitate detailed analysis of small, sparsely distributed targets like cellular clusters in serous cavity effusions.

Abstract:Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the world. Whole-slide images (WSIs) are an important standard for the diagnosis of cervical cancer. Missed diagnoses and misdiagnoses often occur due to the high similarity in pathological cervical images, the large number of readings, the long reading time, and the insufficient experience levels of pathologists. Existing models have insufficient feature extraction and representation capabilities, and they suffer from insufficient pathological classification. Therefore, this work first designs an image processing algorithm for data augmentation. Second, the deep convolutional features are extracted by fine-tuning pre-trained deep network models, including ResNet50 v2, DenseNet121, Inception v3, VGGNet19, and Inception-ResNet, and then local binary patterns and a histogram of the oriented gradient to extract traditional image features are used. Third, the features extracted by the fine-tuned models are serially fused according to the feature representation ability parameters and the accuracy of multiple experiments proposed in this paper, and spectral embedding is used for dimension reduction. Finally, the fused features are inputted into the Analysis of Variance-F value-Spectral Embedding Net (AF-SENet) for classification. There are four different pathological images of the dataset: normal, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), and cancer. The dataset is divided into a training set (90%) and a test set (10%). The serial fusion effect of the deep features extracted by Resnet50v2 and DenseNet121 (C5) is the best, with average classification accuracy reaching 95.33%, which is 1.07% higher than ResNet50 v2 and 1.05% higher than DenseNet121. The recognition ability is significantly improved, especially in LSIL, reaching 90.89%, which is 2.88% higher than ResNet50 v2 and 2.1% higher than DenseNet121. Thus, this method significantly improves the accuracy and generalization ability of pathological cervical WSI recognition by fusing deep features.

Abstract:Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology is nothing if not an eclectic journal, encompassing as it does a great many specialities as they relate to the development and well-being of children suffering from disabilities associated directly or indirectly with the nervous system. From a scientific standpoint, our central focus is on understanding the nature of developmental change so that we may plan interventions designed to prevent, cure or alleviate pathological states. Problems associated with the health and development of children involve interrelated sets of variables, which act in concert in a variety of ways to produce a great range of outcomes, and it is largely different outcomes which have absorbed our attention. At the heart of our concern is a set of assumptions which it is well to acknowledge now and again. The first and fundamental assumption is that an individual’s developmental trajectory can be modified by manipulating environmental variables, and perhaps soon by genetic manipulation also. Developmental outcomes, and by implication processes, are not regarded as predetermined, interventions can affect process and thus change outcomes. Another general assumption is that not only the nature of the intervention but also its timing is important. For the most part it is presumed that the earlier an intervention takes place the better, though this does not imply that later interventions will have no effect. The purpose of an intervention (whether it be supplementary feeding to deal with undernutrition, a surgical procedure designed to prevent contractures, or removing a child from an abusing family) is to effect a change in’ present state or an anticipated future state. The goal is to change the projected trajectory of development from one leading to an anticipated negative state to one in which the outcome is regarded as more positive. A moment’s reflection reveals what an ambitious and important undertaking this is. How can we link the state of an individual now with a desired outcome at some future time? What is the theory of developmental process which drives our interventions? In fact what we often do is acknowledge that thepresent state is undesirable and set about changing that in the belief that the developmental consequences will be positive. The desirability of intervening with the intention of correcting an evident problem may be plain enough, but there are potential limitations and consequences for the cascade of controlled change that we call development. VTCNet: A Feature Fusion DL Model Based on CNN and ViT for the Classification of Cervical Cells

Abstract:ABSTRACT Cervical cancer is a common malignancy worldwide with high incidence and mortality rates in underdeveloped countries. The Pap smear test, widely used for early detection of cervical cancer, aims to minimize missed diagnoses, which sometimes results in higher false‐positive rates. To enhance manual screening practices, computer‐aided diagnosis (CAD) systems based on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) for classifying cervical Pap cells have been extensively researched. In our study, we introduced a DL‐based method named VTCNet for the task of cervical cell classification. Our approach combines CNN‐SPPF and ViT components, integrating modules like Focus and SeparableC3, to capture more potential information, extract local and global features, and merge them to enhance classification performance. We evaluated our method on the public SIPaKMeD dataset, achieving accuracies, precision, recall, and F1 scores of 97.16%, 97.22%, 97.19%, and 97.18%, respectively. We also conducted additional experiments on the Herlev dataset, where our results outperformed previous methods. An improved transformer network for skin cancer classification

Abstract:Background: Use of artificial intelligence to identify dermoscopic images has brought major breakthroughs in recent years to the early diagnosis and early treatment of skin cancer, the incidence of which is increasing year by year worldwide and poses a great threat to human health. Achievements have been made in the research of skin cancer image classification by using the deep backbone of the convolutional neural network (CNN). This approach, however, only extracts the features of small objects in the image, and cannot locate the important parts. Objectives: As a result, researchers of the paper turn to vision transformers (VIT) which has demonstrated powerful performance in traditional classification tasks. The self-attention is to improve the value of important features and suppress the features that cause noise. Specifically, an improved transformer network named SkinTrans is proposed. Innovations: To verify its efficiency, a three step procedure is followed. Firstly, a VIT network is established to verify the effectiveness of SkinTrans in skin cancer classification. Then multi-scale and overlapping sliding windows are used to serialize the image and multi-scale patch embedding is carried out which pay more attention to multi-scale features. Finally, contrastive learning is used which makes the similar data of skin cancer encode similarly so that the encoding results of different data are as different as possible. Main results: The experiment is carried out based on two datasets, namely (1) HAM10000: a large dataset of multi-source dermatoscopic images of common skin cancers; (2)A clinical dataset of skin cancer collected by dermoscopy. The model proposed has achieved 94.3% accuracy on HAM10000 and 94.1% accuracy on our datasets, which verifies the efficiency of SkinTrans. Conclusions: The transformer network has not only achieved good results in natural language but also achieved ideal results in the field of vision, which also lays a good foundation for skin cancer classification based on multimodal data. This paper is convinced that it will be of interest to dermatologists, clinical researchers, computer scientists and researchers in other related fields, and provide greater convenience for patients.

Given that there is a possibility that many errors can occur during manual screening, a computer-aided diagnosis system based on deep learning has been developed. Deep learning methods require a fixed dimension of input images, but the dimensions of clinical medical images are inconsistent. The aspect ratios of the images suffer while resizing them directly. Clinically, the aspect ratios of cells inside cytopathological images provide important information for doctors to diagnose cancer. Therefore, it is difficult to resize directly. However, many existing studies have resized the images directly and have obtained highly robust classification results. To determine a reasonable interpretation, we have conducted a series of comparative experiments. First, the raw data of the SIPaKMeD dataset are pre-processed to obtain standard and scaled datasets. Then, the datasets are resized to 224 × 224 pixels. Finally, 22 deep learning models are used to classify the standard and scaled datasets. The results of the study indicate that deep learning models are robust to changes in the aspect ratio of cells in cervical cytopathological images. This conclusion is also validated via the Herlev dataset.

CerviFormer: A Pap-smear based cervical cancer classification method using cross attention and latent transformer

Abstract:Purpose: Cervical cancer is one of the primary causes of death in women. It should be diagnosed early and treated according to the best medical advice, as with other diseases, to ensure that its effects are as minimal as possible. Pap smear images are one of the most constructive ways for identifying this type of cancer. This study proposes a cross-attention-based Transfomer approach for the reliable classification of cervical cancer in Pap smear images. Methods: In this study, we propose the CerviFormer -- a model that depends on the Transformers and thereby requires minimal architectural assumptions about the size of the input data. The model uses a cross-attention technique to repeatedly consolidate the input data into a compact latent Transformer module, which enables it to manage very large-scale inputs. We evaluated our model on two publicly available Pap smear datasets. Results: For 3-state classification on the Sipakmed data, the model achieved an accuracy of 93.70%. For 2-state classification on the Herlev data, the model achieved an accuracy of 94.57%. Conclusion: Experimental results on two publicly accessible datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves competitive results when compared to contemporary approaches. The proposed method brings forth a comprehensive classification model to detect cervical cancer in Pap smear images. This may aid medical professionals in providing better cervical cancer treatment, consequently, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the entire testing process.

Abstract:Cervical cancer is a significant health problem worldwide, and early detection and treatment are critical to improving patient outcomes. To address this challenge, a deep learning (DL)-based cervical classification system is proposed using 3D convolutional neural network and Vision Transformer (ViT) module. The proposed model leverages the capability of 3D CNN to extract spatiotemporal features from cervical images and employs the ViT model to capture and learn complex feature representations. The model consists of an input layer that receives cervical images, followed by a 3D convolution block, which extracts features from the images. The feature maps generated are down-sampled using max-pooling block to eliminate redundant information and preserve important features. Four Vision Transformer models are employed to extract efficient feature maps of different levels of abstraction. The output of each Vision Transformer model is an efficient set of feature maps that captures spatiotemporal information at a specific level of abstraction. The feature maps generated by the Vision Transformer models are then supplied into the 3D feature pyramid network (FPN) module for feature concatenation. The 3D squeeze-and-excitation (SE) block is employed to obtain efficient feature maps that recalibrate the feature responses of the network based on the interdependencies between different feature maps, thereby improving the discriminative power of the model. At last, dimension minimization of feature maps is executed using 3D average pooling layer. Its output is then fed into a kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) for classification into one of the five classes. The KELM uses radial basis kernel function (RBF) for mapping features in high-dimensional feature space and classifying the input samples. The superiority of the proposed model is known using simulation results, achieving an accuracy of 98.6%, demonstrating its potential as an effective tool for cervical cancer classification. Also, it can be used as a diagnostic supportive tool to assist medical experts in accurately identifying cervical cancer in patients.

Abstract:Introduction: Early diagnosis of cervical cancer at the precancerous stage is critical for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes. Objective: This study aims to explore the use of SWIN Transformer and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) hybrid models combined with transfer learning to classify precancerous colposcopy images. Methods: Out of 913 images from 200 cases obtained from the Colposcopy Image Bank of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, 898 met quality standards and were classified as normal, precancerous, or cancerous based on colposcopy and histopathological findings. The cases corresponding to the 360 precancerous images, along with an equal number of normal cases, were divided into a 70/30 train–test split. The SWIN Transformer and CNN hybrid model combines the advantages of local feature extraction by CNNs with the global context modeling by SWIN Transformers, resulting in superior classification performance and a more automated process. The hybrid model approach involves enhancing image quality through preprocessing, extracting local features with CNNs, capturing the global context with the SWIN Transformer, integrating these features for classification, and refining the training process by tuning hyperparameters. Results: The trained model achieved the following classification performances on fivefold cross-validation data: a 94% Area Under the Curve (AUC), an 88% F1 score, and 87% accuracy. On two completely independent test sets, which were never seen by the model during training, the model achieved an 80% AUC, a 75% F1 score, and 75% accuracy on the first test set (precancerous vs. normal) and an 82% AUC, a 78% F1 score, and 75% accuracy on the second test set (cancer vs. normal). Conclusion: These high-performance metrics demonstrate the models' effectiveness in distinguishing precancerous from normal colposcopy images, even with modest datasets, limited data augmentation, and the smaller effect size of precancerous images compared to malignant lesions. The findings suggest that these techniques can significantly aid in the early detection of cervical cancer at the precancerous stage.

Abstract:Fine-grained classification of cervical cells into different abnormality levels is of great clinical importance but remains very challenging. Contrary to the traditional classification methods that rely on hand-crafted or engineered features, convolution neural network (CNN) can classify cervical cells based on automatically learned deep features. However, CNN in previous studies does not involve cell morphological information, and it is unknown whether morphological features can be directly modeled by CNN to classify cervical cells. This paper presents a CNN-based method that combines cell image appearance with cell morphology for classification of cervical cells in Pap smear. The training of cervical cell dataset consists of adaptively re-sampled image patches coarsely centered on the nuclei. Several CNN models (AlexNet, GoogLeNet, ResNet, and DenseNet) pre-trained on ImageNet dataset were fine-tuned on the cervical dataset for comparison. The proposed method is evaluated on the Herlev cervical dataset by five-fold cross-validation at patient-level splitting. The results show that by adding cytoplasm and nucleus masks as raw morphological information into appearance-based CNN learning, higher classification accuracies can be achieved in general. Among the four CNN models, GoogLeNet fed with both morphological and appearance information obtains the highest classification accuracies of 94.5%, 71.3%, and 64.5%, for two-class (abnormal versus normal), four-class ("The Bethesda System"), and seven-class ("World Health Organization classification system") classification tasks, respectively. Our method demonstrates that combining cervical cell morphology with appearance information can provide improved classification performance. Although the initial results are promising, deep learning-based fine-grained cervical cell classification remai-s a very challenging task for a high-precision diagnosis.

Abstract:. Multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) is an investigation that can simultaneously measure multiple electroretinographic responses at different retinal locations by cross-correlation techniques. mfERG therefore allows topographic mapping of retinal function in the central 40--50 (cid:2) of the retina. The strength of mfERG lies in its ability to provide objective assessment of the central retinal function at different retinal areas within a short duration of time. Since the introduction of mfERG in 1992, mfERG has been applied in a large variety of clinical settings. This article reviews the clinical applications of mfERG based on the currently available evidence. mfERG has been found to be useful in the assessment of localized retinal dysfunction caused by various acquired or hereditary retinal disorders. The use of mfERG also enabled clinicians to objectively monitor the treatment outcomes as the changes in visual functions might not be reﬂected by subjective methods of assessment. By changing the stimulus, recording, and analysis parameters, investigation of speciﬁc retinal electrophysiological components can be performed topographically.
