Abstract:Coverage path planning (CPP) is a field of study which objective is to find a path that covers every point of a certain area of interest. Recently, the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has become more proficient in various applications such as surveillance, terrain coverage, mapping, natural disaster tracking, transport, and others. The aim of this paper is to design efficient coverage path planning collision-avoidance capable algorithms for single or multi UAV systems in cluttered urban environments. Two algorithms are developed and explored: one of them plans paths to cover a target zone delimited by a given perimeter with predefined coverage height and bandwidth, using a boustrophedon flight pattern, while the other proposed algorithm follows a set of predefined viewpoints, calculating a smooth path that ensures that the UAVs pass over the objectives. Both algorithms have been developed for a scalable number of UAVs, which fly in a triangular deformable leader-follower formation with the leader at its front. In the case of an even number of UAVs, there is no leader at the front of the formation and a virtual leader is used to plan the paths of the followers. The presented algorithms also have collision avoidance capabilities, powered by the Fast Marching Square algorithm. These algorithms are tested in various simulated urban and cluttered environments, and they prove capable of providing safe and smooth paths for the UAV formation in urban environments.
Energy-aware Multi-UAV Coverage Mission Planning with Optimal Speed of Flight

Abstract:This paper tackles the problem of planning minimum-energy coverage paths for multiple UAVs. The addressed Multi-UAV Coverage Path Planning (mCPP) is a crucial problem for many UAV applications such as inspection and aerial survey. However, the typical path-length objective of existing approaches does not directly minimize the energy consumption, nor allows for constraining energy of individual paths by the battery capacity. To this end, we propose a novel mCPP method that uses the optimal flight speed for minimizing energy consumption per traveled distance and a simple yet precise energy consumption estimation algorithm that is utilized during the mCPP planning phase. The method decomposes a given area with boustrophedon decomposition and represents the mCPP as an instance of Multiple Set Traveling Salesman Problem with a minimum energy objective and energy consumption constraint. The proposed method is shown to outperform state-of-the-art methods in terms of computational time and energy efficiency of produced paths. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the energy consumption estimation is on average 97% compared to real flight consumption. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified in a real-world coverage experiment with two UAVs.

Abstract:This paper presents the development and implementation of a multiple unmanned aerial vehicle system focused on coverage path planning on multiple separated areas capable of re‐planning the collective mission in case of unexpected events. For this purpose, we present a distributed‐centralized architecture that uses heuristic and computationally efficient methods to perform the planning/re‐planning and decision‐making tasks during the control of the mission execution. We performed a computational evaluation of the algorithms, comparing them with other proposals, together with experiments in simulated and real flights. The results show that the system can distribute tasks equitably among the aircraft in an efficient way, even in the middle of the flight, when facing unexpected events; and show a higher computational efficiency when compared to multiple proposals in the state of the art.

A Multi-Objective Coverage Path Planning Algorithm for UAVs to Cover Spatially Distributed Regions in Urban Environments

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-objective coverage flight path planning algorithm that finds minimum length, collision-free, and flyable paths for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in three-dimensional (3D) urban environments inhabiting multiple obstacles for covering spatially distributed regions. In many practical applications, UAVs are often required to fully cover multiple spatially distributed regions located in the 3D urban environments while avoiding obstacles. This problem is relatively complex since it requires the optimization of both inter (e.g., traveling from one region/city to another) and intra-regional (e.g., within a region/city) paths. To solve this complex problem, we find the traversal order of each area of interest (AOI) in the form of a coarse tour (i.e., graph) with the help of an ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm by formulating it as a traveling salesman problem (TSP) from the center of each AOI, which is subsequently optimized. The intra-regional path finding problem is solved with the integration of fitting sensors’ footprints sweeps (SFS) and sparse waypoint graphs (SWG) in the AOI. To find a path that covers all accessible points of an AOI, we fit fewer, longest, and smooth SFSs in such a way that most parts of an AOI can be covered with fewer sweeps. Furthermore, the low-cost traversal order of each SFS is computed, and SWG is constructed by connecting the SFSs while respecting the global and local constraints. It finds a global solution (i.e., inter + intra-regional path) without sacrificing the guarantees on computing time, number of turning maneuvers, perfect coverage, path overlapping, and path length. The results obtained from various representative scenarios show that proposed algorithm is able to compute low-cost coverage paths for UAV navigation in urban environments.

Multi-UAV Path Planning for Autonomous Missions in Mixed GNSS Coverage Scenarios

Abstract:This paper presents an algorithm for multi-UAV path planning in scenarios with heterogeneous Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) coverage. In these environments, cooperative strategies can be effectively exploited when flying in GNSS-challenging conditions, e.g., natural/urban canyons, while the different UAVs can fly as independent systems in the absence of navigation issues (i.e., open sky conditions). These different flight environments are taken into account at path planning level, obtaining a distributed multi-UAV system that autonomously reconfigures itself based on mission needs. Path planning, formulated as a vehicle routing problem, aims at defining smooth and flyable polynomial trajectories, whose time of flight is estimated to guarantee coexistence of different UAVs at the same challenging area. The algorithm is tested in a simulation environment directly derived from a real-world 3D scenario, for variable number of UAVs and waypoints. Its solution and computational cost are compared with optimal planning methods. Results show that the computational burden is almost unaffected by the number of UAVs, and it is compatible with near real time implementation even for a relatively large number of waypoints. The provided solution takes full advantage from the available flight resources, reducing mission time for a given set of waypoints and for increasing UAV number.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a study on coverage missions carried out by UAV formations in 3D environments. These missions are designed to be applied in tracking and search and rescue missions, especially in the case of accidents. In this manner, the presented method focuses on the path planning stage, the objective of which is to compute a convenient trajectory to completely cover a certain area in a determined environment. The methodology followed uses a Gaussian mixture to approximate a probability of containment distribution along with the Fast Marching Square (FM2) as path planner. The Gaussians permit to define a zigzag trajectory that optimizes the path. Next, a first 2D geometric path perpendicular to the Voronoi diagram of the Gaussian distribution is calculated, obtained by skeletonization. To this path, the height above the ground is added plus the desired flight height to make it 3D. Finally, the FM2 method for formations is applied to make the path smooth and safe enough to be followed by UAVs. The simulation experiments show that the proposed method achieves good results for the zigzag path in terms of smoothness, safety and distance to cover the desired area through the formation of UAVs.

Abstract:Coverage path planning is an important research direction for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which are primarily used in ground search or mapping scenarios. Although there have been a large number of studies on UAV coverage path planning, there are still some problems in the cooperative work of multi-UAV in complex environments under the constraints of energy consumption and work efficiency requirements of UAV. To solve unnecessary energy loss when multiple UAVs jointly execute complex area coverage tasks and improve the overall work efficiency of the UAV swarm. In this study, we simulated the situation of multiple UAVs performing the mission of area coverage under the constraints of the corresponding energy consumption in a work environment with no-fly zones. We propose the use of multiple UAV base stations to provide takeoff and landing services for UAVs that perform missions. We proposed two algorithms. One is the multi-base station multi-UAV cooperative coverage path planning algorithm with flexible obstacle avoidance ability (MBS-MUCCPPAFOA), which performs coverage route planning from an entire area using multiple base stations to perform multi-UAV area coverage tasks. The other algorithm is a multi-UAV cooperative coverage path planning algorithm with flexible obstacle avoidance capability based on area segmentation (MUAV-CCPPAFOA-AS), which divides the entire work area and performs coverage path planning for each sub-area to perform multi-UAV area coverage tasks. We compared the proposed algorithm with the common scanning coverage path planning algorithm, and proved the robustness of the proposed MBS-MUCCPPAFOA and MUAV-CCPPAFOA-AS algorithms.

Abstract:Due to its flexibility and complementarity, the multi-UAVs system is well adapted to complex and cramped workspaces, with great application potential in the search and rescue (SAR) and indoor goods delivery fields. However, safe and effective path planning of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the cramped environment is always challenging: conflicts with each other are frequent because of high-density flight paths, collision probability increases because of space constraints, and the search space increases significantly, including time scale, 3D scale and model scale. Thus, this paper proposes a hierarchical collaborative planning framework with a conflict avoidance module at the high level and a path generation module at the low level. The enhanced conflict-base search (ECBS) in our framework is improved to handle the conflicts in the global path planning and avoid the occurrence of local deadlock. And both the collision and kinematic models of UAVs are considered to improve path smoothness and flight safety. Moreover, we specifically designed and published the cramped environment test set containing various unique obstacles to evaluating our framework performance thoroughly. Experiments are carried out relying on Rviz, with multiple flight missions: random, opposite, and staggered, which showed that the proposed method can generate smooth cooperative paths without conflict for at least 60 UAVs in a few minutes. Abstract:In some specific conditions, UAVs are required to obtain comprehensive information of an area or to operate in the area in an all-round way. In this case, the coverage path planning (CPP) is required. This paper proposes a solution to solve the problem of short endurance time in the coverage path planning (CPP) problem of multi-solar unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Firstly, the energy flow efficiency based on the energy model is proposed to evaluate the energy utilization efficiency during the operation. Moreover, for the areas with and without obstacles, the coverage path optimization model is proposed based on the undirected graph search method. The constraint equation is defined to restrict the UAV from accessing the undirected graph according to certain rules. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to determine the flight path of each UAV with the objective of minimizing operation time. Through the simulation experiment, compared with the Boustrophedon Cellular Decomposition method for coverage path planning, it is seen that the completion time is greatly improved. In addition, considering the impact of the attitude angle of the solar powered UAV when turning, the operation time and the total energy flow efficiency are defined as the optimization objective. The bi-objective model equation is established to solve the problem of the CPP. A large number of simulation experiments show that the optimization model in this paper selects different optimization objectives and applies to different shapes of areas to be covered, which has wide applicability and strong feasibility.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can offer timely and cost-effective delivery of high-quality sensing data. How- ever, deciding when and where to take measurements in complex environments remains an open challenge. To address this issue, we introduce a new multiresolution mapping approach for informative path planning in terrain monitoring using UAVs. Our strategy exploits the spatial correlation encoded in a Gaussian Process model as a prior for Bayesian data fusion with probabilistic sensors. This allows us to incorporate altitude-dependent sensor models for aerial imaging and perform constant-time measurement updates. The resulting maps are used to plan information-rich trajectories in continuous 3-D space through a combination of grid search and evolutionary optimization. We evaluate our framework on the application of agricultural biomass monitoring. Extensive simulations show that our planner performs better than existing methods, with mean error reductions of up to 45% compared to traditional "lawnmower" coverage. We demonstrate proof of concept using a multirotor to map color in different environments.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present an efficient path planning method for the multi-UAV system in target coverage problems. Design/methodology/approach An enhanced particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is used to solve the path planning problem, which concerns the two-dimensional motion of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a three-dimensional environment. Enhancements include an improved initial swarm generation and prediction strategy for succeeding generations. Initial swarm improvements include the clustering process managed by fuzzy c-means clustering method, ordering procedure handled by ant colony optimizer and design vector change. Local solutions form the foundation of a prediction strategy. Findings Numerical simulations show that the proposed method could find near-optimal paths for multi-UAVs effectively. Practical implications Simulations indicate the proposed method could be deployed for autonomous multi-UAV systems with target coverage problems. Originality/value The proposed method combines intelligent methods in the early phase of PSO, handles obstacle avoidance problems with a unique approach and accelerates the process by adding a prediction strategy.

Abstract:The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for communication data collection across all areas can be modeled as a complete coverage path planning (CCPP) problem. To address the challenge of lengthy coverage time in traditional CCPP algorithms, we propose a weighted balanced graph partitioning based complete coverage path planning scheme (WBGPP), which consists of two sub-algorithm: weighted balanced graph partitioning (Weighted B-GRAP) and single agent path planning (SAPP). The Weighted B-GRAP algorithm can decompose the multi-UAV CCPP problem into multiple single UAV CCPP problems by assigning each UAV a responsibility area according to its capability. Then, we optimize the backtracking strategy through breadth-first search and design a SAPP algorithm to reduce the number of repeated visits and shorten the coverage time. The simulation results show that the proposed WBGPP scheme effectively reduce the coverage time of multiple UAVs in CCPP problems and can be applied to various maps.
Communication and Energy-Aware Multi-UAV Coverage Path Planning for Networked Operations

Abstract:This paper presents a communication and energy-aware Multi-UAV Coverage Path Planning (mCPP) method for scenarios requiring continuous inter-UAV communication, such as cooperative search and rescue and surveillance missions. Unlike existing mCPP solutions that focus on energy, time, or coverage efficiency, our approach generates coverage paths that require minimal the communication range to maintain inter-UAV connectivity while also optimizing energy consumption. The mCPP problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization task, aiming to minimize both the communication range requirement and energy consumption. Our approach significantly reduces the communication range needed for maintaining connectivity while ensuring energy efficiency, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Its effectiveness is validated through simulations on complex and arbitrary shaped regions of interests, including scenarios with no-fly zones. Additionally, real-world experiment demonstrate its high accuracy, achieving 99\% consistency between the estimated and actual communication range required during a multi-UAV coverage mission involving three UAVs.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel mission planning platform, capable of efficiently deploying a team of UAVs to cover complex-shaped areas, in various remote sensing applications. Under the hood lies a novel optimization scheme for grid-based methods, utilizing Simulated Annealing algorithm, that significantly increases the achieved percentage of coverage and improves the qualitative features of the generated paths. Extensive simulated evaluation in comparison with a state-of-the-art alternative methodology, for coverage path planning (CPP) operations, establishes the performance gains in terms of achieved coverage and overall duration of the generated missions. On top of that, DARP algorithm is employed to allocate sub-tasks to each member of the swarm, taking into account each UAV’s sensing and operational capabilities, their initial positions and any no-fly-zones possibly defined inside the operational area. This feature is of paramount importance in real-life applications, as it has the potential to achieve tremendous performance improvements in terms of time demanded to complete a mission, while at the same time it unlocks a wide new range of applications, that was previously not feasible due to the limited battery life of UAVs. In order to investigate the actual efficiency gains that are introduced by the multi-UAV utilization, a simulated study is performed as well. All of these capabilities are packed inside an end-to-end platform that eases the utilization of UAVs’ swarms in remote sensing applications. Its versatility is demonstrated via two different real-life applications: (i) a photogrametry for precision agriculture and (ii) an indicative search and rescue for first responders missions, that were performed utilizing a swarm of commercial UAVs. Abstract:In this work, we propose and analyze multi-drone path planners for multi-target search and connectivity. The goal of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mission is to search an unknown area to detect, connect and monitor multiple randomly distributed targets to the ground control station (GCS) while maintaining the connectivity of the UAVs to GCS. To this end, we propose to use two types of UAVs: search and relay. The search drones scan the area via onboard sensors, whereas relay UAVs provide connectivity. We propose three different responses to target detection with increasing adaptability: (i) follow pre-planned paths and inform GCS when possible, (ii) follow pre-planned paths and inject new UAVs to monitor the detected targets, (iii) assign a search UAV to monitor target, and re-plan remaining UAV paths. Furthermore, we implement multi-objective optimization-based planners for single-type UAVs, where the paths are optimized in terms of total coverage time and percentage connectivity. Our results show that less adaptive schemes detect all targets faster; however, the connectivity of the UAVs and the targets to GCS is significantly better for the adaptive schemes. The joint-optimization methods, on the other hand, in their basic form, trade-off detection time to improve connectivity. When they are used in conjunction with relays, the connectivity performance is improved; however, the overall mission times may be up to 40% higher than our proposed methods, depending on the number of UAVs and targets.

Scalable Coverage Path Planning of Multi-Robot Teams for Monitoring Non-Convex Areas

Abstract:This paper presents a novel multi-robot coverage path planning (CPP) algorithm - aka SCoPP - that provides a time-efficient solution, with workload balanced plans for each robot in a multi-robot system, based on their initial states. This algorithm accounts for discontinuities (e.g., no-fly zones) in a specified area of interest, and provides an optimized ordered list of way-points per robot using a discrete, computationally efficient, nearest neighbor path planning algorithm. This algorithm involves five main stages, which include the transformation of the user’s input as a set of vertices in geographical coordinates, discretization, load-balanced partitioning, auctioning of conflict cells in a discretized space, and a path planning procedure. To evaluate the effectiveness of the primary algorithm, a multi-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) post-flood assessment application is considered, and the performance of the algorithm is tested on three test maps of varying sizes. Additionally, our method is compared with a state-of-the-art method created by Guasella et al. Further analyses on scalability and computational time of SCoPP are conducted. The results show that SCoPP is superior in terms of mission completion time; its computing time is found to be under 2 mins for a large map covered by a 150-robot team, thereby demonstrating its computationally scalability.
Multi-UAV Data Collection and Path Planning Method for Large-Scale Terminal Access

Abstract:In the context of the relentless evolution of network and communication technologies, the need for enhanced communication content and quality continues to escalate. Addressing the demands of data collection from the abundance of terminals within Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, this paper presents an advanced approach to multi-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) data collection and path planning tailored for extensive terminal accessibility. This paper focuses on optimizing the complex interplay between task completion time and task volume equilibrium. To this end, a novel strategy is devised that integrates sensor area partitioning and flight trajectory planning for multiple UAVs, forming an optimization framework geared towards minimizing task completion duration. The core idea of this work involves designing an innovative k-means algorithm capable of balancing data quantities within each cluster, thereby achieving balanced sensor node partitioning based on data volume. Then, the UAV flight trajectory paths are discretely modeled, and a grouped, improved genetic algorithm is used to solve the Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem (MTSP). The algorithm introduces a 2-opt optimization operator to improve the computational efficiency of the genetic algorithm. Empirical validation through comprehensive simulations clearly underscores the efficacy of the proposed approach. In particular, the method demonstrates a remarkable capacity to rectify the historical issue of diverse task volumes among multiple UAVs, all the while significantly reducing task completion times. Moreover, its convergence rate substantially outperforms that of the conventional genetic algorithm, attesting to its computational efficiency. This paper contributes an innovative and efficient paradigm to improve the problem of data collection from IoT terminals through the use of multiple UAVs. As a result, it not only augments the efficiency and balance of task distribution but also showcases the potential of tailored algorithm solutions for realizing optimal outcomes in complex engineering scenarios.

Abstract:In the event of a maritime accident, surveying the maximum area efficiently in the least amount of time is crucial for rescuing survivors. Increasingly, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being used in search and rescue operations. This study proposes a method to generate a search path that covers all generated nodes in the shortest amount of time with multiple heterogeneous UAVs. The proposed model, which is a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model based on a hexagonal grid-based decomposition method, was verified through a simulation analysis based on the performance of an actual UAV. This study presents both the optimization technique’s calculation time as a function of the search area size and the various UAV routes derived as the search area grows. The results of this study can have wide-ranging applications for emergency search and rescue operations.

Abstract:Multi-UAV systems are attracting, especially in the last decade, the attention of researchers and companies of very different fields due to the great interest in developing systems capable of operating in a coordinated manner in complex scenarios and to cover and speed up applications that can be dangerous or tedious for people: search and rescue tasks, inspection of facilities, delivery of goods, surveillance, etc. Inspired by these needs, this work aims to design, implement and analyze a trajectory planning and collision avoidance strategy for multi-UAV systems in 3D environments. For this purpose, a study of the existing techniques for both problems is carried out and an innovative strategy based on Fast Marching Square-for the planning phase-and a simple priority-based speed control-as the method for conflict resolution-is proposed, together with prevention measures designed to try to limit and reduce the greatest number of conflicting situations that may occur between vehicles while they carry out their missions in a simulated 3D urban environment. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated successfully on the basis of certain conveniently chosen statistical measures that are collected throughout the simulation runs.
