Abstract:After a long time of navigation, marine fouling occurs on a ship's hull and propeller, leading to higher frictional resistance of the hull and lower effectual output of the propeller, and it also damages the hull and propeller. Currently, there are extensive studies on robots for underwater cleaning of ship hulls with large areas and relatively regular surfaces. However, robots for underwater cleaning of propellers with complicated spatial surfaces are still in demand. Motivated by this need, a solution for cleaning the propeller by the underwater manipulator is proposed in this study. Coarse registration and iterative closest point fine registration were adopted to improve the propeller's locating accuracy. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II was applied to optimize the trajectory of the B-spline joint to obtain an optimized trajectory that meets the specific requirements of the underwater manipulator. Finally, sliding mode control was adopted for high trajectory tracking. The integrated task of locating, trajectory planning, and control was simulated. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the above methods and the feasibility of the proposed scheme. This study serves as a guideline for further research in the analysis and system design of the underwater manipulator for cleaning propellers.

Abstract:Searching and containing dynamic target like oil spillage in the ocean is a challenging task due to the natural time variance of the spread of the oil. The use of cooperative multi-marine vehicle systems in a cluttered environment for this purpose poses difficulties in sustaining formation pattern to pursue and contain the leakage. In this article, in order to provide realistic setup for the industrial applications of multi-marine vehicles systems, we present a novel approach for collision-free distributed formation control for a network of underactuated surface vessels (USVs). The proposed approach comprises two layers: A distributed coordination layer and a local fixed-time neural network control layer. In the first layer, formation leaders accomplish a specified formation configuration while tracking a desired trajectory from a tracking leader. The second control layer is to robustly drive the real USVs with parametric and nonparametric uncertainties to track their corresponding formation leaders. Because only parts of the formation leaders can acquire the states of the tracking leader, a distributed fixed-time estimator is proposed to obtain accurate estimations of the desired information for each USV in the network. Next, in order to effectively maneuver in cluttered environment, local path replanning-based repulsive potential function technique is proposed for each USV in the group formation to act on the formation leaders trajectories. Further, redesigned adaptive neural networks are integrated to compensate the model uncertainties. The stability of the proposed controller is verified by the Lyapunov direct method. Simulation studies of a hexagon formation are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Distributed Motion Control for Multiple Connected Surface Vessels

Abstract:We propose a scalable cooperative control approach which coordinates a group of rigidly connected autonomous surface vessels to track desired trajectories in a planar water environment as a single floating modular structure. Our approach leverages the implicit information of the structure's motion for force and torque allocation without explicit communication among the robots. In our system, a leader robot steers the entire group by adjusting its force and torque according to the structure's deviation from the desired trajectory, while follower robots run distributed consensus-based controllers to match their inputs to amplify the leader's intent using only onboard sensors as feedback. To cope with the complex and highly coupled system dynamics in the water, the leader robot employs a nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC), where we experimentally estimated the dynamics model of the floating modular structure in order to achieve superior performance for leader-following control. Our method has a wide range of potential applications in transporting humans and goods in many of today's existing waterways. We conducted trajectory and orientation tracking experiments in hardware with three custom-built autonomous modular robotic boats, called Roboat, which are capable of holonomic motions and onboard state estimation. Simulation results with up to 65 robots also prove the scalability of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Heterogeneous autonomous robot teams consisting of multirotor and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) have the potential to enable various maritime applications, including advanced search-and-rescue operations. A critical requirement of these applications is the ability to land a multirotor on a USV for tasks such as recharging. This paper addresses the challenge of safely landing a multirotor on a cooperative USV in harsh open waters. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel sequential distributed model predictive control (MPC) scheme for cooperative multirotor-USV landing. Our approach combines standard tracking MPCs for the multirotor and USV with additional artificial intermediate goal locations. These artificial goals enable the robots to coordinate their cooperation without prior guidance. Each vehicle solves an individual optimization problem for both the artificial goal and an input that tracks it but only communicates the former to the other vehicle. The artificial goals are penalized by a suitable coupling cost. Furthermore, our proposed distributed MPC scheme utilizes a spatial-temporal wave model to coordinate in real-time a safer landing location and time the multirotor's landing to limit severe tilt of the USV.

Abstract:Cooperative control of multiple unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) is essential for addressing increasingly complicated maritime tasks. This paper presents a safety-critical framework for cooperative target enclosing control of USVs, which considers the moving target with unavailable velocities, unknown dynamics of USVs, safety issues including the internal and external collision avoidance, and control input constraints. Specifically, a cooperative target estimator is designed that utilizes the inter-USV communication to estimate the position and velocity of a target with unknown velocities. Then, a cooperative target enclosing controller based on USV kinematics is designed to achieve both the distance keeping and evenly space circumnavigation with neighbors. To guarantee the safety issues for USVs with unknown dynamics during the target enclosing, a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) based controllers combined with a safety-critical filter using input-to-state safe based control barrier function (ISSf-CBF) are developed. The RBFNNs are employed to approximate the unknown USV dynamics, and the network outputs serve as the basis for the safety-critical filter. This filter handles the impact of approximation errors and external disturbances on safety issues while achieving the collision avoidance, thus ensuring the safety and reliability during the target enclosing process. Comparative simulations and real platform experiments are implemented to verify the effectiveness of proposed safety-critical cooperative target enclosing control framework for USVs.
Distributed Control of Unmanned Marine Vehicles for Target Circumnavigation in Communication-Denied Environments

Abstract:This article considers the problem of target circumnavigation using multiple unmanned marine vehicles in the communication-denied environment. The vehicles are required to circumnavigate the target maintaining a desired radius and evenly spaced positions relying solely on local relative range measurements. A novel distributed control strategy with a saturation function design is proposed for cooperatively circumnavigating both static and dynamic targets. Via the Lyapunov control theory and the input-to-state property, the closed-loop stability with only the relative range information is achieved. The steady-state circumnavigation error converges to zero and is uniformly ultimately bounded for the static and dynamic targets, respectively. In addition, a second-order sliding mode observer is developed to estimate the range rate information. The observer incorporates linear and nonlinear correction terms and is proven to be global asymptotically stable. The finite time convergence property also contributes to the control performance. Finally, numerical simulations and real experiments involving three unmanned surface vehicles are conducted. Compared with the existing approach, the proposed method shows convenience in implementations and better circumnavigation control performance especially for dynamic targets.

Abstract:Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) are widely applied in ocean exploration and environmental protection. To ensure efficient execution of tasks, the motion control of USV is essential and critical. However, the hydrodynamics disturbances from ocean environment are commonly highly nonlinear, time-variant and impractical to be modelled, which renders control extremely challenging. Therefore, in this paper we propose a learning-based model predictive control (MPC) approach for USV course-keeping subject to disturbances and uncertainties. A relatively simplified dynamics model is augmented by a long short term memory (LSTM) residual model, which can capture complicated hydrodynamics effect and eliminate model mismatch. The resulting formulation is incorporated in MPC framework to achieve optimal real-time control. Further, the proposed approach is verified through simulation experiments.
Safe Autonomy for Uncrewed Surface Vehicles Using Adaptive Control and Reachability Analysis

Abstract:Marine robots must maintain precise control and ensure safety during tasks like ocean monitoring, even when encountering unpredictable disturbances that affect performance. Designing algorithms for uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) requires accounting for these disturbances to control the vehicle and ensure it avoids obstacles. While adaptive control has addressed USV control challenges, real-world applications are limited, and certifying USV safety amidst unexpected disturbances remains difficult. To tackle control issues, we employ a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) to stabilize the USV along a desired trajectory. For safety certification, we developed a reachability module with a moving horizon estimator (MHE) to estimate disturbances affecting the USV. This estimate is propagated through a forward reachable set calculation, predicting future states and enabling real-time safety certification. We tested our safe autonomy pipeline on a Clearpath Heron USV in the Charles River, near MIT. Our experiments demonstrated that the USV's MRAC controller and reachability module could adapt to disturbances like thruster failures and drag forces. The MRAC controller outperformed a PID baseline, showing a 45%-81% reduction in RMSE position error. Additionally, the reachability module provided real-time safety certification, ensuring the USV's safety. We further validated our pipeline's effectiveness in underway replenishment and canal scenarios, simulating relevant marine tasks.

Abstract:Harmful marine spills, such as algae blooms and oil spills, damage ecosystems and threaten public health tremendously. Hence, an effective spill coverage and removal strategy will play a significant role in environmental protection. In recent years, low-cost water surface robots have emerged as a solution, with their efficacy verified at small scale. However, practical limitations such as connectivity, scalability, and sensing and operation ranges significantly impair their large-scale use. To circumvent these limitations, we propose a novel asymptotic boundary shrink control strategy that enables collective coverage of a spill by autonomous robots featuring customized operation ranges. For each robot, a novel controller is implemented that relies only on local vision sensors with limited vision range. Moreover, the distributedness of this strategy allows any number of robots to be employed without inter-robot collisions. Finally, features of this approach including the convergence of robot motion during boundary shrink control, spill clearance rate, and the capability to work under limited ranges of vision and wireless connectivity are validated through extensive experiments with simulation.

Abstract:This article studies the cooperative path-following control problem for a group of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) which requires the vessels to track a predefined path while keeping their formation. A novel distributed model predictive contouring control (MPCC) method of USVs is proposed and an optimal cooperative control algorithm is designed. In particular, the proposed method penalizes the difference of contouring parameters between neighboring USVs to achieve distributed formation control, and optimizes the control inputs simultaneously in a receding horizon fashion. In this way, the MPCC method can balance the tracking accuracy and tracking speed to obtain a better formation quality than the traditional model predictive control following a time-dependent trajectory. Besides, an artificial potential field function is constructed to avoid collision in the receding horizon optimization. Finally, the comparison studies and hardware experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Water pollution generated by accidental spill of hazardous materials is a growing problem worldwide. There is an urgent need for a tool that would help environmental response teams perform rapid understanding of the location and the extent of the spill to effectively establish an appropriate response. This paper presents a cooperative robotic system for environmental monitoring consisting of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and an autonomous unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The main contributions of the paper are a systematic description of the design and implementation of the proposed cooperative robotic system, a novel human-on-the-loop (HOTL) approach applied on the system for environmental monitoring, and demonstration of the results of the open-sea experiments on pollution deliberately caused by harmless Rhodamine water tracing (WT), carried out in Cartagena, Spain, in June 2015. The proposed HOTL system provides near real-time pollution measurement data, while not consuming a significant amount of human time and effort. It supports decision-making and allows the operator to initiate the most adequate mission in a current situation, i.e., ensures mission change on-the-fly. While the AUV samples the ocean, the USV maintains the localization and communication data transfer to the control center and corrects the AUV's dead reckoning error.
Decoupled Sampling-Based Motion Planning for Multiple Autonomous Marine Vehicles

Abstract:There is increasing interest in the deployment and operation of multiple autonomous marine vehicles (AMVs) for a number of challenging scientific and commercial operational mission scenarios. Some of the missions, such as geotechnical surveying and 3D marine habitat mapping, require that a number of heterogeneous vehicles operate simultaneously in small areas, often in close proximity of each other. In these circumstances safety, reliability, and efficient multiple vehicle operation are key ingredients for mission success. Additionally, the deployment and operation of multiple AMVs at sea are extremely costly in terms of the logistics and human resources required for mission supervision, often during extended periods of time. These costs can be greatly minimized by automating the deployment and initial steering of a vehicle fleet to a predetermined configuration, in preparation for the ensuing mission, taking into account operational constraints. This is one of the core issues addressed in the scope of the Widely Scalable Mobile Underwater Sonar Technology project (WiMUST), an EU Horizon 2020 initiative for underwater robotics research. WiMUST uses a team of cooperative autonomous marine robots, some of which towing streamers equipped with hydrophones, acting as intelligent sensing and communicating nodes of a reconfigurable moving acoustic network. In WiMUST, the AMVs maintain a fixed geometric formation through cooperative navigation and motion control. Formation initialization requires that all the AMVs start from scattered positions in the water and maneuver so as to arrive at required target configuration points at the same time in a completely automatic manner. This paper describes the decoupled prioritized vehicle motion planner developed in the scope of WiMUST that, together with an existing system for trajectory tracking, affords a fleet of vehicles the above capabilities, while ensuring inter-vehicle collision and streamer entanglement avoidance. Tests with a fleet of seven marine vehicles show the efficacy of the system planner developed.

Abstract:Double unmanned surface vehicles (DUSVs) towing a floating rope are more effective at removing large floating garbage on the water's surface than a single USV. This paper proposes a comprehensive trajectory planner for DUSVs connected with a floating rope for cooperative water-surface garbage collection with dynamic collision avoidance, which takes into account the kinematic constraints and dynamic cooperation constraints of the DUSVs, which reflects the current collection capacity of DUSVs. The optimal travel sequence is determined by solving the TSP problem with an ant colony algorithm. The DUSVs approach the garbage targets based on the guidance of target key points selected by taking into account the dynamic cooperation constraints. An artificial potential field (APF) combined with a leader–follower strategy is adopted so that the each USV passes from different sides of the garbage to ensure garbage capturing. For dynamic obstacle avoidance, an improved APF (IAPF) combined with a leader–follower strategy is proposed, for which a velocity repulsion field is introduced to reduce travel distance. A fuzzy logic algorithm is adopted for adaptive adjustment of the desired velocities of the DUSVs to achieve better cooperation between the DUSVs. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the algorithm of the proposed planner in that the generated trajectories for the DUSVs successfully realize cooperative garbage collection and dynamic obstacle avoidance while complying with the kinematic constraints and dynamic cooperation constraints of the DUSVs.

Abstract:Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) are marine vessels capable of performing various marine operations without a crew in a variety of cluttered and hostile water/ocean environments. For complex missions, there are increasing needs for deploying a fleet of ASVs instead of a single one to complete difficult tasks. Cooperative operations with a fleet of ASVs offer great advantages with enhanced capability and efficacy. Despite various application potentials, coordinated motion control of ASVs pose great challenges due to the multiplicity of ASVs, complexity of intravehicle interactions and fleet formation with collision avoidance requirements, and scarcity of communication bandwidths in sea environments. Coordinated control of multiple ASVs has received considerable attention in the last decade. This article provides an overview of recent advances in coordinated control of multiple ASVs. First, some challenging issues and scenarios in motion control of ASVs are presented. Next, coordinated control architecture and methods of multiple ASVs are briefly discussed. Then, recent results on trajectory-guided, path-guided, and target-guided coordinated control of multiple ASVs are reviewed in detail. Finally, several theoretical and technical issues are suggested to direct future investigations including network-based coordination, event-triggered coordination, collision-free coordination, optimization-based coordination, data-driven coordination of ASVs, and task-region-oriented coordination of multiple ASVs and autonomous underwater vehicles.

Abstract:This paper solves the problem of cooperative path planning of multiple unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) for search and coverage tasks in water environments. Firstly, taking the search coverage problem of water surface pollutants as an example, the information concentration map is built to predict the diffusion of water surface pollutants. Secondly, we propose a region division method based on a Voronoi diagram, which divides the region and assigns it to each unmanned surface vehicle (USV). Then, on the basis of the traditional Model Predictive Control (MPC), the future reward index based on the regional centroid is introduced, and the Improved Salp Swarm Algorithm (ISSA) is used to solve MPC. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A multi-unmanned surface vessel (USV) formation control system is established on a novel platform composed of three 1.2-m-long hydraulic jet propulsion surface vessels, a differential GPS reference station, and inter-vessel Zigbee communication modules. The system is also equipped with an upper level collective multi-USV protocol and a lower level vessel dynamics controller. The system is capable of chasing and surrounding a target vessel. The results are supported by rigorous theoretical analysis in terms of asymptotical surrounding behavior and trajectory regulation. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed hardware and software architectures.

Collaborative Object Manipulation on the Water Surface by a UAV-USV Team Using Tethers

Abstract:This paper introduces an innovative methodology for object manipulation on the surface of water through the collaboration of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) connected to the object by tethers. We propose a novel mathematical model of a robotic system that combines the UAV, USV, and the tethered floating object. A novel Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework is designed for using this model to achieve precise control and guidance for this collaborative robotic system. Extensive simulations in the realistic robotic simulator Gazebo demonstrate the system's readiness for real-world deployment, highlighting its versatility and effectiveness. Our multi-robot system overcomes the state-of-the-art single-robot approach, exhibiting smaller control errors during the tracking of the floating object's reference. Additionally, our multi-robot system demonstrates a shorter recovery time from a disturbance compared to the single-robot approach.

Abstract:In the last decade, a great effort has been employed in the study of Hybrid Unmanned Aerial Underwater Vehicles, robots that can easily fly and dive into the water with different levels of mechanical adaptation. However, most of this literature is concentrated on physical design, practical issues of construction, and, more recently, low-level control strategies. Little has been done in the context of high-level intelligence, such as motion planning and interactions with the real world. Therefore, we proposed in this paper a trajectory planning approach that allows collision avoidance against unknown obstacles and smooth transitions between aerial and aquatic media. Our method is based on a variant of the classic Rapidly-exploring Random Tree, whose main advantages are the capability to deal with obstacles, complex nonlinear dynamics, model uncertainties, and external disturbances. The approach uses the dynamic model of the HyDrone, a hybrid vehicle proposed with high underwater performance, but we believe it can be easily generalized to other types of aerial/aquatic platforms. In the experimental section, we present simulated results in environments filled with obstacles, where the robot is commanded to perform different media movements, demonstrating the applicability of our strategy.

Abstract:Regular inspections are crucial to maintaining waste-water pipelines in good condition. The challenge is that inside a pipeline the space is narrow and may have a complex structure. The conventional methods that use pipe robots with heavy cables are expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to operate. In this work, we develop an amphibious system that combines a quad-copter with a surface vehicle, creating a hybrid unmanned aerial floating vehicle (HUAFV). Nonlinear dynamics of the HUAFV are modeled based on the dynamic models of both operating modes. The model is validated through experiments and simulations. A PI controller designed and tuned on the developed model is implemented onto a prototype platform. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the new HUAFV's modeling and design.

Abstract:In this paper, we outline a low cost multi-robot autonomous platform for a broad set of applications including water quality monitoring, flood disaster mitigation and depth buoy verification. By working cooperatively, fleets of vessels can cover large areas that would otherwise be impractical, time consuming and prohibitively expensive to traverse by a single vessel. We describe the hardware design, control infrastructure, and software architecture of the system, while additionally presenting experimental results from several field trials. Further, we discuss our initial efforts towards developing our system for water quality monitoring, in which a team of watercraft equipped with specialized sensors autonomously samples the physical quantity being measured and provides online situational awareness to the operator regarding water quality in the observed area. From canals in New York to volcanic lakes in the Philippines, our vessels have been tested in diverse marine environments and the results obtained from initial experiments in these domains are also discussed.
